Hello, hello
Welcome to what is probably going to become a series of rants about the very unimportant details of books that live rent free in my head
Today I present to you:
The older brother of a least mentioned side character in a (unfortunately) very unapreciated sci-fi ya book
Now that that introduction is out of the way I have thoughts about Daniel Batu Wing from Warcross.
And I was not kidding about the character introduction. Warcross has a fandom with like 4 people in it in total, which is tragic in my opinion. Asher is a side character, the captain of the team and out of all of the friends Emika makes during the events of the book the one mentioned the least. So, now imagine how much his brother is mentioned.
I'll tell you - it's about 1.5 pages and 2 by-the-way mentions in around 600 pages of the duology.
So what are the things we know about Daniel:
He's Asher's older brother (if I had to guess maybe like 2-3 year age gap)
He's a famous actor and stuntman
He comes off arogant in Asher's memory when he is touched by Zero
He's Day's ancestor, so at some point he was married/had a girlfriend/one night stand - procreated so to say
And... that's about it really
So not much as you can see.
Now, what I have thought about reading the book and what led to this post is Asher (as a character I wish had more developement) and in turn his relationship with Daniel and that somehow led to a very badly done psycho analysis.
On to the bussiness.
The first time we see Daniel mentioned is when Emika meets Asher. She says that he is famous and that Asher was originally known as his younger brother and Ash gets a brief cold look at the mention of his brother.
The second time is when the dorm is blown up and Hamilton mentions that Asher's parents and brother are there to see him.
The third time is the memory in which we find out maybe the root of the problem between the brothers.
I would like to present to you my personal headcanons for the ages of Daniel and Asher. I like to think that Asher in the series is 22-23. Which would make Daniel somwhere around 25. I may explain my way of thinking this later, this is already long and I have told you nothing that you did not already know.
Why are the ages important, you may ask? The memory. Since Emika places the memory some 8-9 years, before the events of the series. The boys would be around 14 and 16.
From what we know their parents are getting a divorce and their house is a mess as well as the relationships in their family.
Daniel's way of dealing with this? Absolutely ignoring the situation around him. For what I understand to be a significant amount of time - a couple of years would do the trick.
So he sees what is happening and ignores his feelings and thoughts about the matter.
Why? Simple - he's neglected and feels alienated from his family so he alienates them back.
One another headcanon I would like to mention, that sort of makes Daniel's attitude and things he says make sense, is that Asher lost the use of his legs in an accident some time before their parents divorce.
This, understandably, makes the parents dote on Ash and in turn neglect Daniel.
And I say this because to me at least it seems that Ash does not understand that Daniel does not want him around and sees Ash as a problem. Most likely due to some change in dynamic Asher is not aware of. Which is perfectly understandable because why would his relationship with his brother change?
We see some evidence for this in:
Asher: Where are you going?
Daniel:...
Asher: You know what? You don't have to tell me? I don't have to know every single thing about your life, when you clearly don't care for me.
Daniel *sarcastically*: You only need me to care. Don't you have enough people giving you attention already?
Or something along those lines, I have the translated copy.
He sound so bitter and jelous there.
And Asher ( who is not good at dealing with people, like at all (also a post for another time)) calls out on Daniel's coping mechanism (ignoring the divorce). In which part I understand given the next part of the conversation where Daniel tells Ash that he isn't doing much better and Ash, not at all reading the situation or understanding that Daniel also means ignoring the divorce, says that Daniel is not doing much better, but at least his victories are the reason they have food on the table.
First of all, some A+ parenting, right there.
Second of all, Dany straight up goes for Asher's throat after this and that entire conversation causes a rift between them.
Very fun on all sides, as you can see.
What's fun to point out is that Daniel acts like a threatened animal. He was ready for jumping at his attacker the first available moment from the moment Asher refused to put the matter to rest.
We see this from Ash's POV, but how would it look like to Daniel?
He has a small career, that he's very proud of
He's starved for attention from the people he needs it from the most in his teenage years
The only attention he gets grom family comes from the very reason he is neglected (not to say Asher is at fault here, because he is not. Daniel just seems to place the fault on him)
All of the family's finance and well being is put on the shoulders of the youngest member of the family who is disabled
Like, he, as most older siblings (it's a curse), feels the need to, in some capacity, provide something to the houshold when the parents clearly don't, but he only continues to ignore the situation at hand.
If their parents have not gotten a divorce, Dany would have probably ran away from home a mnd cut all contact.
And like all things that are ignored, the sitation at hand comes to bite him in the butt in the form of Asher (the aformentioned problem) who just keeps on pressing the sore spot until Daniel has to options - run away again and keep the cycle going or bit back and get rid of the problem. And bite he does.
To his credit, Daniel was most likely 16 at the time of this and none of us emotionally mature at that age, he delt with his emotion really badly, took it out on the wrong person and soured his relationship with his family.
They have most likely made up (I do not think that the cold look Ash had at the mention of Daniel was because the had bad blood, but rather that Emika put him again in the back of his brother's shadow when Ash worked hard to get out of it). Why do I think this? You don't fly half-way across the planet to check on someone you don't like/don't speak with/have bad blood with, when if he wanted to come across as caring he would have called or texted. Or ask third party who knows what happend and has seen Ash like Roshan, Hamilton or their parents.
So yeah, to sum up this way too long of a rant in which nothing was said, Dany was just a teenager in a horrible situation with which he delt badly.

Dancing makes me think of @lovealexhunt's beautifully commissioned artwork - Mal and Daenarya after the ball and IT IS JUST TOO DAMN GORGEOUS OKAY? (I have like seventy posts saved in my drafts as reblogs and I should totally do that sometime soon lol). Honestly @hydn-jpg's art slaps, like hard bass, let's freaking go! Dani, always knocking it out of the park <3
Dagger - obviously @cassie-thorne. Ik ik too specific but I vaguely recall us just talking about daggers and weapons and cool stuff and recently there was this Ask from the playchoicesconfession account that talked about equipping the Crimes MC with something better than a taser. (MAX, CAMERON WITH KNIFE ARTWORK WHEN) and it also reminds me of this piece by @monschoices with Trystan and Sasha dressed up as the characters in Scream (1996). And Max just gives me full chaos vibes - we're all here for the chaos!
Seaside gives me just full @peonierose vibes. I'm just so behind on catching up with Peonie's work, but the last I hear, Luna and Bryce are living their sandy, beachy dreams up! There was this cute little fic where while they're picking out cakes, Bryce and Luna discover they're pregnant and it's just the wholesomest, feel-goodest fic on this earth. Plus, Peonie as a person just makes me associate with beaches, just the warmth of a nice summer's day.
New York is just @jerzwriter XD! Legit! It's synonymous almost! Ik you're from New Jersey, but you get the trademark New York culture, which is just so evident in your Crimes fics. I love them! I love how Carolina's got this wit and charm that's this cleverly calculated thing that helps her navigate tough situations but she is absolutely unafraid to hurl someone in front of a subway train in the slightest and yes, Trystan should be scared. I'd love to visit NYC someday!
Bakery gives me @peonyblossom solely because of the queer coffee shop vibes. I'm pretty sure they have a coffee shop AU and I'm just that terrible to not have gotten to it sooner XD. But honestly, yes, if we're going by vibes and vibes alone, just the atmosphere of a cornerstore bakery. It's very tough to pinpoint to one thing lol!
Vinyl records is just screaming @mydemonsdrivealimo (I don't know if I should be envious of Jensen that he gets to wear cool frickin outfits and just cook up a storm on the performing stage or if I should just sit back and wish why he weren't an actual musician I can binge-listen to on Spotify XD) but seriously, just impeccable of the impeccable-est music tastes ever.
Screaming reminds me of this Aerin x MC artwork by @oh-so-youre-a-nerd and IT'S NOTHING SHORT OF A MASTERPIECE (once again, I'm so behind on reblogging the coolest art and fics that I come across). I haven't seen the Witcher, but just Aerin "Sadboi" Valleros screaming out of his lungs is just a mood (mood I say, when it's heart-wrenching lmao). But damn, they knock it out of the whole freaking universe with their impeccable art! I'm just gonna sit here in awe and doom-scroll through their stuff right now.

Yes. I’m sure I’ve missed some, but I do try to respond to them all.

I think I’d have to say, “Chloe Effed Up.” It’s the only fic I’ve written where Beca and Chloe do not end up together.
7. Happiest ending?
I am known for happy, fluffy stories, so I can’t pick which of my fics would have the happiest ending. (I do love writing an Epilogue and will (almost) always find a way to have a happy ending.)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
None that I can recall.
9. Do you write smut/what kind?
Not usually; I have written some light smut when I felt it added something to the story (or I got badgered enough and added some to keep readers happy; giving into peer pressure is not usually my forte, but I can be persuaded every once in a while).
10. Do you write crossovers?
I haven’t, but I have used characters from Grey’s Anatomy more than once.
11. Ever had a fic stolen?
Yes.
12. Ever had a fic translated?
Not that I’m aware of.
13. Ever cowritten a fic?
Yes, several, actually.
14. Favorite ship?
For writing, all Bechloe, all the time. Also, Staubrey. And, I don’t write them, but I have grown a bit fond of Junksen (and I did write a Christmas one-shot where Aubrey and Emily were together).
15. A WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Nothing that’s been posted. (I do have a couple of fics in a Drafts folder that I started because I got an idea and didn’t want to lose it. I may have to revisit that folder and see if there’s anything there worth working on.)
16. Writing strengths?
I finish every fic I start; nothing is left incomplete. I also feel I’m stronger at writing one-shots than multi-chapter fics.
17. Writing weaknesses?
I use dialog to convey the story because I’m not as good at imagery or descriptive narratives.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in a different language?
I haven’t written too much in a different language, only small parts of conversations, and Google Translate may or may not have been involved. If I actually spoke a different language, I would definitely write something in that language.

Pitch Perfect. Also, it's the only fandom I’ve written for.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers

1 - How many works do you have on AO3?
I have 37 works, 7 of those are part of series.
2 - What’s your total AO3 word count?
255,686.
3 - What fandoms do you write for?
I’ll write for any fandom, if I know enough about it at least. But the fandoms I have fics on AO3 are; The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Supernatural, Not Me, The Eclipse, Semantic Error, Between Us and Never Let Me Go.
4 - What are your top 5 fics by Kudos?

5 - Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes and no, it depends on the comment and how I’m feeling. I know I seem like a loud mouth on here, but I’m actually extremely shy and have generalized anxiety disorder, so interacting with people - even online - can cause me a lot of anxiety so it can be difficult to reply to ever comment.
6 - What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmm, I don’t know. I don’t think any of my fics actually end with angst, start with it, run with it or just are angsty in general but I typically try and make endings at the very least hopeful.
7 - What’s a fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
There Is No Normal, I would say that one is the happiest ending for sure. It ends with a proposal and a happily ever after, domestic bliss with a dog and a kid and a happy group of friends and family.
8 - Do you get hate on fics?
Nah, I legit have the best readers on the planet. The sweetest people, who I love to interact with. The closest thing I got to hate would be one little complaint during a Big Bang I was in because I alluded to a character being a switch instead of a strict top, someone saw that and went to the mods to complain instead of coming directly to me. So I absolutely did not change it, because screw their petty ass lol.
9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
All kinds, I’ll write all types of smut featuring all types of genders and sexualities. I’m also willing to try to write any kink (within reason) but that doesn’t mean I’ll write it well lol, I make no promises, I might be total shit at writing a type of smut I’ve never written before.
10 - Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest crossover you’ve ever written?
Yes, I do write crossovers. I think the craziest is actually an unpublished fic that is a crossover of Supernatural and The Void, which is a Canadian made Lovecraftian horror movie from 2016.
11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?
If so, its not come to my attention.
12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yep, I’m always happy to link to any translations of my works on the original fic, so I always remind translators to drop me a line with a link so I can post it.
13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, I have a co-author that I’ve worked with for like a decade now. I trust them with so much, we work together amazingly well.
14 - What’s your all time favourite ship?
Bro, I’m supposed to have one!? Impossible to answer, no way, next question lol.
15 - What’s a WIP that you want to finish, doubt you ever will?
I’m not really sure, I wanna think that all my WIPs will eventually get done. Because of how my mental health fluctuates, I tend to not to like posting chaptered WIPs because I don’t like leaving people waiting. Which is probably why I only have a couple posted, those ones will absolutely get done. As for non-posted WIPs, well… since they’re not posted there will be no proof of them not getting done. 😈😈
16 - What are your writing strengths?
I have no idea, so I’ll go with what I’ve been told. Characterization, emotional atmosphere and general ambiance. Also smut, I’m your neighbourhood smut peddler for a reason lol.
17 - What are your writing weaknesses?
Spelling and grammar in general, I have dyslexia and mild aphasia due to a TBI that I suffered in my early twenties. Even though I go over my fics dozens of times before they get posted and typically they go to a beta, not always, I’ll admit I am impatient lol. There are still some fuck ups in my fics, even after posting.
18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Unless I speak it at least somewhat fluently, I don’t do it. If I wanna suggest that the person is speaking in a different language than what’s being written, I just slap it in italics.
19 - First fandom you wrote for?
Pretty sure it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Ginger Snaps, I can’t remember tbh.
20 - Favourite fic you’ve written?
One of my faves is actually not even on AO3, it was back in my LiveJournal days. It’s a Torchwood fic, it’s basically a Torchwood version of Alice Through the Looking Glass just way more violent and gory. Yes! there's a fantastic group of russian folks who liked to read In Search of Home when I was updating it. If i start it up again, it's gonna be for them <3

Honestly I don't think I have one? I like imagining various blorbos together but nothing stands out to me off the top of my head.

I want so badly to finish In search of home, but the motivation....the muse...they are away never to be seen again...

scene setting and character building. Action and dialogue can sometimes feel stilted, but I'm really good at giving the narration a strong voice and making strong, 3D characters :3
17.) what are your writing weaknesses?
pacing and plot. I get lost in the weeds, or I dont go into the metaphorical grass at all, and it's so hard to find that middle ground. Fortunately for fanfic you don't need to worry about pacing quite as much as you would for more traditionally-written stories with a planned beginning middle and end
18.) thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I love it honestly. I threw in some spanish here and there for a bilingual character, and I think it adds some authenticity when you know the language. But if you don't, there's nothing wrong with just writing it in the language you do speak and just indicating that it's in a different language.
19.) first fandom you wrote for?
When I was 9 years old I was introduced to na.ruto and made my first OC. nothing was ever the same.
Although my first FIC fic was a H.arry P.otter fic when I was 11, posted on quizilla. Anyone remember Quizilla? That shit rocked. i loved those interactive fics.
20.) favorite fic you've ever written?
Honestly In Search of Home. It's just fun and silly and feels like a good continuation of my version of the series finale.

Hmm. They all sort of performed how I expected, as in I was pleasantly surprised to get more than 10 kudos for anything XD Maybe chapter 2 of The Contract? Not sure if people like it less than ch. 1. But in terms of the fics themselves, Over the Hills and Far Away already received more hits than I ever imagined lol but I guess I thought it’d earn at least 10 kudos.
7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would?
Grand Hotel, hands down.
8. What was your favorite fic you wrote from 2022?
This is a hard one, but probably Birdcage! Because I actually managed to finish it in 2022 asdfasdf Also it gave me the chance to write some extreme Andres whump, so there’s that!
9. What was your favourite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?
I can’t settle for any one fic, so here’s some that I personally enjoyed the most and had the time to read in 2022! Most of them lean dark, so with the exception of “Upon paper wings” and “The way to a man’s heart,” do mind the warnings and tags!
Did I ever leave the lights on (could you ever find your way back home?) by @nharidy A crack concept (berlermo switch souls out of the blue) on the surface, but a story that’s so much more than that. Legit one of the most selfless, genuine depictions of Martin’s love (and that shred of nobility under all the asshole in his blood) I’ve ever read, and I still get emotional thinking about this story.
something borrowed, something -- by anonymous; I swear I’m not biased but I must say, I was insanely lucky to have such a talented writer take a post of a scenario I made and publish a full story based on it. Like WHEN will that ever happen again?? It’s like I threw a coin down a wishing well and it happened! This is a fantastically written (but Very dark!) character study, and even though there’s no upfront gore or violence, the story pulls no punches with the premise: injured, amnesiac Andres thinks Gandia is Martin and suffers all sorts of sexual, domestic, and psychological abuse as a result.
Those Violent Delights by @aceraphaelsantiagos Ongoing but well worth the wait! It’s an ongoing berlermo thriller told out of chronological order and watching the puzzle unfold is like climbing deeper into the spider web. AU but amazing characterization, and with my favorite dynamic: Dom/Dom!
{ Upon paper wings. } by @moneyheist-fam Their first berlermo fic! And a truly wonderful one at that. One of the rare completed AUgust fics LOL. There’s a warm fairy tale like quality to this, and it’s just a very sweet and beautifully written tale about soulmates.
A Lamb for Our Love by @the--sound--of--rain Ongoing, but definitely a story that stuck with me since the first time I read it! Another “Gandia abducts Andres and-” story, but the fic is about what happens after Andres comes back to Martin. A rocky, angsty piece with heartbreaking characterization and a look at what would happen if these two made the worst possible choices thinking that’s what’s best. The first chapter is definitely worth the read, and I’m sure the second will be equally good, if not better!
The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach by @alfredo-kesmann Why yes, this is my gift haha, but alfredo-kesmann went above and beyond a very simple prompt and gave us a story that’s insanely funny and endearing all at the same time. Truly one of my favorite fics of 2022 and I rec it to everyone, especially everyone whoever thought “hmm what if Andres being a good cook is just headcanon and he really sucks at it?? would Martin lie and pretend he’s good?” Answer: yes Martin would
Vinum Stygis by @signorin-anarchia Another ongoing fic! But very underrated and promising. A period gothic romance with all the creepy and dark elements you’d want from the genre. It’s a creative spin on Crimson Peak that somehow manages to make the premise work for berlermo, and definitely deserves more attention. Wonderful atmosphere and toxic assholes all around~
Last but not least, The Fatal Drive by NaturesMarvel! Kal’s longest fic yet, and my favorite 2022 hit from her. It’s filled with lots of twists and turns (and a plot that’s blockbuster material for sure!), including a few that actually fooled me haha Also features badass Martin, a satisfying amount of hurt!Andres (thank you for your service Kal), and cameos from just about everyone. This is an AU where everything starts with Andres receiving a pen drive (saying anything else would be a spoiler!)

Ok so I’m in early season 4. I’ve always really liked Bonnie, but she never gets anything to do and when she does it’s always just “here’s a random guy for you to have a relationship with and that will be your story for a while” (her and Jeremy 🤮) and it’s never interesting (although I wouldn’t mind if they went anywhere at all with her and Damon tbh).
I also very much like Damon, by far the better brother. I really don’t care about anything Elena-related anymore and I think it’s mostly because they’ve played everything out with her several times through already. Also sorry to Nina Dobrev but she’s not a great actor and I’ve kinda had it with the character by now. The less said about Stefan the better. Jeremy and Tyler too.
Now that I’m several seasons in though it really is feeling like they’re stretching for content. The world and season threats got too big and they have no idea how to stop the power creep so they just keep adding stuff that totally breaks established lore. One of the things I love about Caroline is how well she grounded the story (sure she’s a vampire but she’s also still really into regular high school drama and trying to be a normal person still).

Hello!! It's been a long time since I watched the show so I apologise in advance for any inadvertent spoilers or vague plot recall.
Okay so Bonnie has legit been done the dirtiest even though she's one of the coolest characters. I like some of her plot lines where her witch roots means she's actively opposed to the vampires but she still wants to be on Elena's side, the conflict could have been interesting but it's never mined deeper. I hate her and Jeremy too and I agree that she and Damon have some legit chemistry (explored in further seasons, so you do have something to look forward to!)
Yeah Elena is annoying, and I got tired quickly about how everything was always about her. I'm not sure if I prefer Damon over Stefan, but Stelena is defs more boring. I prefer Stefan as a stand alone character or his friendship dynamic with Lexi, Caroline etc (more on this later).
I agree with you that the world building gets bigger than the writers can handle, but I really enjoyed the cure storyline in s4. I'm in the minority, but I really liked how there are all these factions with their own agendas competing to get the cure, and well, i always like it when the Originals have to team up with the Mystic Falls gang.
Talking about the Originals, I think they're the best thing the show has ever done. The casting, the acting, the group dynamics, the lore, the integration with the core tvd group... Perfection. What do you think? Who's your favourite Original?
Yes, Caroline is such a breath of fresh air in the show. I absolutely love how she's one of the few characters who actually LOVES being a vampire. I related to her even before she turned, when she was talking about being second choice "no matter how much I do, its never enough". She's thriving as a vampire as well as retaining her connection to her human side, without any of the angsty brooding that Stefan and all do. One of the reasons I love Klaroline is that Klaus is the ONLY one who recognises this, that she wants a life bigger and better than this. He accepts her as she is, and I just looove how much he changes throughout the course of knowing her, how he consistently puts her first. Sigh. I can go on and on about Klaroline. They have such epic moments, my god. What have been your favourite scenes??

running like water - a Zutara oneshot
AU Post-finale, that time when an assassin crashes Zuko's 18th birthday. Luckily he has a master waterbender by his side. Ft. a badass Katara, Fire Nation political intrigue, and Bloodbending as flirting.

It’s Zuko’s 18th birthday and he is nowhere to be found. By all accounts, he’d made an appearance at the Royal Ball for a respectable amount of time and then disappeared into thin air. Katara hurries across the halls of the palace, one hand gathering the skirts of her formal gown, her heels clicking on the marble floor. The palace staff haven’t seen him either—he wasn’t in his bedchambers, nor in the library, and she’d even checked under the willow tree next to the turtleduck pond. Katara fumes, her annoyance rising. She’s laboured over his gift for days, the least he could do is not get kidnapped or whatever.
It’s nearing midnight and Katara is about to contemplate hiring the services of Jun and her shirshu when she remembers the one place she hadn’t yet searched: the rooftop. While the rooftop was largely inaccessible, owing to its steep pagoda architecture, there was a flat alcove, hidden to the public, that opened up to the sky. Zuko had shown it to her a while ago when he was making plans for renovation, but it was dirty and in disrepair then, which is why it had slipped her mind.
The entrance to the roof is hidden behind a tapestry, a rather heavy, ugly thing the colour of blood. Katara twitches the tapestry aside and slips behind it. A narrow spiral staircase stands in front of her, illuminated by a hanging dusty lantern. Clutching the wrought iron railings, she begins the dizzying climb. An unexpected sight greets her at the top.
The place has been transformed into a charming rooftop garden. Vines climb the walls and trail down the parapet. Rows of potted herbs are flanked by beds of exotic flowers, the spicy and sweet scents intermingling in interesting ways. Fat beeswax candles stuck on iron stands are placed strategically in recesses, giving the entire garden a low, atmospheric lighting. And lounging on a profusion of cushions, eyes shut, his top knot undone, is Zuko.
“Took you long enough,” he says lazily, cranking one eye open.
“Happy Birthday,” Katara snaps, flinging the wrapped parcel at his stomach with a little too much force.
Zuko straightens immediately. “What is this?”
“Your present, dummy. I’ve been running around everywhere looking for you.”
He frowns. “Didn’t Oromi deliver you the message?”
“What message?” she asks, sinking into a cushion beside him.
“He must have misplaced the note again.” Oromi was the new palace gardener, a country lad, kind-hearted but rather forgetful. He was a magician at his work, though—he could make the stubbornest of saplings sprout and the most exotic flowers bloom under his care, almost like he was bending them. This little rooftop garden seems to be his doing. “I wrote you a message asking you to meet me here. I could not stand all those dreadful festivities.”
“Yes, yes what a bore having people throwing grand parties in your honour.”
A sheepish smile spread across his face. “I appreciate it all, I really do.”
“The royal cooks roasted an entire hippo-ox in your honour.”
“And I savoured every bite of it…but it exhausts me, having to put on this stern, aloof, regal front.” He does look exhausted, there are lines around his eyes that have no business being there. He also looks older; the planes of his face have sharpened and there’s stubble on his face on days he has no official business. “I hate pretending to be someone I’m not, especially on my birthday, when I’d rather spend time with the people I like.” His eyes flicker to her and her stomach flips.
Clearing her throat, Katara gestures to the package lying in his lap. “Open your gift.”
Zuko picks up the gift, examining it from every angle. Katara watches him carefully as his deft fingers unwrap the parcel, untying the strings and peeling off the layers. Nestled in the folds is a stack of small, unassuming-looking, semi-circular cakes.
“It’s a mooncake,” says Katara hurriedly. “A traditional Water Tribe recipe. Probably not a very special gift but my mom used to make them for birthdays-”
Zuko is already digging into the stack. He takes a bite, makes a sound of appreciation, and polishes off the whole cake. “Is there fruit jam inside?!” he asks in delight, mouth full. He offers a cake to her and picks another for himself.
“Yes!” She grins. “Salmonberry jam. I spent days in the palace kitchen, trying to get the thickness of the filling right. It needs to be the right amount of oozy…”
The words die on her tongue. Zuko is licking the jam off his fingers. She puts down her cake, suddenly very flustered.
Zuko looks up as she falls silent. Their eyes meet and the moment holds still. They’ve been dancing around each other for the past two years, longer than that, if she’s honest. Lingering looks, not-so-accidental touches, charged banter…she’s been noticing it more in their interactions lately, whether it’s quiet picnics beside the turtleduck pond or heated fights during state meetings. And now this connection, whatever it may be, is threatening to make itself known in very real ways. Katara has half a mind to brush off the moment with a flippant remark.
It’s Zuko who breaks the silence. “You look beautiful, by the way,” he comments. She’s wearing a traditional Fire Nation gown, richly embroidered in threads of red and gold, but her hair—
“Your hair is braided Water Tribe style. It looks good on you.”
She smiles, fighting off a blush. “Thank you.”

Hellooo, the Picturesque prequel from Klaus's POV is finally here!
Longing
Summary: Klaus likes his life, mostly. He has his own flat in New York City, a great group of friends, a budding career as an artist, but as he's navigating all the ups and downs the city throws at him, he realises that he's longing for something more. Or rather, someone.
[The long-awaited prequel to Picturesque! As promised, this is from Klaus's POV and tells the story of how in the process of figuring out who he wants to be, he's more and more drawn towards Caroline. Too bad she doesn't think of him as anything other than a friend...]
I cannot believe how long this took! Writing from Klaus's POV was challenging, and I felt like my writing style had changed in the years since I wrote Picturesque. Anyway, here's my labour of love, hope you like it! This will be a two-parter, the second chapter will be up next week. To new readers, this is a prequel to Picturesque so PLEASE read that fic before this! You'll enjoy this fic better *after* reading Picturesque. While chronologically/plot-wise Longing comes first, I feel like from the progression of my writing style and the work I've put in the characterisations, it makes more sense to read Longing after Picturesque. Also, if you're a familiar reader, I'd still suggest you read Picturesque, just to brush up (I've made some slight edits for continuity, especially in the last chapter)

20 Questions for fic writers
@cchapsticck tagged me and given we should have an update on CWSTAU by the end of this month, figured I should post.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
4 - Most of my work isn't published. I've written a lot but just...not put it out there. I've always been a chicken. However one I archived/deleted and the other is on an account I don't associate with this one, and is on long term hiatus. The other is on someone else's account that will be explained below and just, /gestures.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
18,760 (published) but to give ya'll some idea of how much of Conventional Weapons is sitting waiting to be edited/refined, I have 14k sitting in gdocs
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Stranger Things, Danger Days. This is a labor of love towards both fandoms, and when the main CW is done, I have pieces that are going expand with both the characters of ST and DD. Any other non-DD things will go on my other account (not associated here).
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
adlfkja only got the one baby. But I'm so thankful for each and every one of those kudos.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! It may not always be coherent or the best comment, but I try to give people some sort of response as they've gone that extra mile to provide me a comment. Every kudo, every comment means so much to me. Seriously, I wrote this expecting an audience of like, 2 people, and knowing so many more are enjoying it means the world to me.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
There is a timeloop fic that remains in the drafts that has a horrible ending, but I don't know if it will ever be published. As of right now, no angst endings here. Complicated, messy, but not angst ridden, really.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
The ending of Conventional Weapons is already written--its been written for a long time (before the middle parts were even written) and I don't know if it's the happiest ending, but it's the most hopeful.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nah, I'm too niche for that lol.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Smut with emotion? IDK. There are plans for smut in CW but I think they are going to be 'missing scenes' published after the fact that people can read/not read at their leisure. I enjoy writing it, but it isn't really what this story is about, and I honestly don't feel that it works with the main body of this story. Hence, the "click here to read the sex" aspect of what is going to happen.
The 'sequel' things may be more explicit, as they aren't the direct story.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Gestures to what this entire blog/project is about.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nah.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
While not a traditional co-written piece, @cchapsticck has provided insight that has really helped me move this along, and the key mantra in the fic itself is from them. Their art has also really been important as well. They sell themselves short on their additions, really. Their help, esp early on, in helping me shape the world, means that this fic is what it is now.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Legit could never choose one
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Look, the story that's on hiatus may never be finished. And hey, that's okay. I have a few that I've got outlines for, that may never get past that. I'm a slow writer, I always have been. I really dont want to let anything else get rolling until CW is done anyways.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Look I'm going to be honest, I have no fucking idea. I will say I think I'm pretty good at characterization, and I usually feel confident in my choices for the character--in a 'yes they would do this given the situation' and a 'yes they would say that'. Given it's an AU I get more wiggle room, but I feel really strongly about Steve and Eddie's characterization, and I know that not everyone feels the same way I do regarding them--but I'm confident in my character choices in the story. [This goes for my other stories as well but--]
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I hate writing action. I suck at it, and I try to avoid it, despite evidence to the contrary. Trying to keep track of all the balls in the air is just annoying as hell. Also despite this fic having a real overarching plot, I have really wanted to keep it 'vibes' based more than plot, cause things get to plot heavy and I start to worry I'm a bore. It's where my insecurities start to sneak in, which lets my writing to become a lot weaker in turn.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Note: all my statements are assuming you aren't fluent in the language you are trying to write in, and you're a native English speaker.
Maybe a word or two is okay? But unless you're fluent, you're gonna make it sound weird. If a character is speaking in German, just say they are speaking in German. Unless it is absoLUTELY important to the narrative that the phrase be in a foreign language, in the fic--do the work to make sure it's correct. Get a native speaker to check it, put in the translation somewhere. But again, ask yourself once, twice, three times if it's necessary.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I didn't consider it fanfic at the time but I absolutely wrote a 'fix it' chapter for the end of The Great Gatsby for class once lol. That was the beginning.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
This one. Again, I know it's niche, but CW is such a labor of love, and means so much to me. It's not perfect, I'm slow going because of school and work, but I've never felt so secure in my own work and felt such joy when I'm working on it.

Genshin Volleyball Dream Team [Volleyball Team AU - Inspired by Haikyuu!] Introduction Headcanons
Notes: Guess who started watching Haikyuu! FML As if I didn’t have enough things to do I decided to fall in love with like 5 different volleyball teams with an average of 10 players.
I couldn’t get it out of my head. I’m sorry.
Scenario: What if the Genshin boys were a volleyball team?
In the next part: How would it be working as their manager? What if someone hits on you? What if some girl fans bully you? Also, how would it be to date a Genshin volleyball superstar?

#1 Zhongli (Captain/Wing Spiker/Ace)
The rock and pillar of the team
Has a strict looking face but amicable most times. Except for when you’re late for training then run. Just run.
Anyone who skips training will feel his wrath in the form of extra 10 laps around the gym
If you joined the volleyball team, to him, you’ve basically signed a contract to COMMIT to the volleyball team. No questions asked. Sissies aren’t allowed here.
If anyone in the team is misbehaving e.g. teasing another team he’s the one who pushes your head down and apologizes for you. “Apologies about this one, he gets way too excited,”
Doesn’t let failure stop him. Tries to keep it together for the team.
Obviously has a lot of fans but they’re too intimidated to approach him.
#2 Diluc (Vice Captain/Wing Spiker/Defense Specialist)
strong but silent type
serious about the game
doesn’t talk much but his volleyball game is STRONG
because he doesn’t look like much, opponents are SHOOK when he spikes with a big loud SMACK
Doesn’t brag a lot. His victory cheer is just a simple fist pump.
Will call the shots and sets if needed
Socially kinda awkward
Also has a lot of fans, everyone in the team has a lot of fans but he gets the most love letters in the locker type of thing.
Nicknamed Silent Burn cause of his intense stare and passion while playing.
#3 Kaeya (Middle Blocker)
Diluc’s totally opposite brother
Not as serious as Diluc in the game but has a particular talent for it
loves to tease and talk crap about other teams (Zhongli reels him in almost every time)
Don’t let him fool you though, his block game is an iron wall and there’s no getting past him unless you’re quicker.
Possibly the one that skips training the most
Nicknamed Ice Wall cause you think you got the ball past him, you see the cracks, but he pushes back two times stronger
Got the type of fans that are SQUEALING his name and he fuels them by waving back at them.
#4 Albedo (Setter)
Genius. A formidable addition to the team.
Has precise calculations of where he should direct the ball and to whom.
Silent type, a bit like Diluc, but talks more because he likes discussing with others what was wrong with his set and how he can improve it.
Experiments with the other members on different types of sets and attacks.
What he lacks in height he makes up for with intelligence.
Doesn’t have a lot of fans because he looks arrogant but the ones he have are pleasant ones that just lurk around the gym and doesn’t say much. Maybe snapping a picture of him but okay I would too.
#5 Tartaglia (Middle Blocker/Wing Spiker)
Probably the one that’s most energetic and shouts whenever they get a point.
You have to wonder where the hell his energy and drive is coming from.
The one that shouts praises to his team “Nice one!” “Gotcha!” “Take that!” and also the one that provokes the opponents a lot. “Come get it!” “Come on, you can do better than that!” Zhongli is always hovering around him cause someone has to CALM this man-childe down.
Obnoxiously confident.
Is tall so makes a good middle blocker but he’s fast as well.
Loves competing. Like, he LIVES for the competition.
Fans are basically the same as Kaeya’s, loudly cheering for him.
#6 Kazuha (Decoy/Middle Blocker/Wing Spiker)
The first thing that everyone notices about him is that he’s SHORT. How did he make the volleyball team?
Bitch he can FLY. His jumps rivals that of a middle blocker’s height.
Surprise attacks are his thing cause the opponents don’t see or think he’s coming at all.
Possibly the quickest in the team, him and Xiao. The wind is on their side.
Looks calm and collected all the time but inside he’s yearning for the game. Giving up is not in his dictionary.
Has fans that will give him chocolates but he’s the type to only say thank you and bow politely and nothing else. Maybe a small smile.
#7 Xiao (Libero)
Also short, but his reflexes are top-notch, making him a powerful libero.
When you think all is lost and the ball is about to hit the ground Xiao’s there to catch it. 90% of the time. He’s still training the 10%.
Looks up to the captain A LOT. Like he’s Xiao’s role model and possibly the reason that he tries and trains so hard.
Takes it hard when he can’t catch a ball and has a high sense of responsibility. Even if the team keeps on saying it’s not his fault.
Stoic face but the exhilaration he feels during a game sends him off to a high.
Possibly has the most fans out of everyone because all them high school girls love the bad boy look and attitude. Possibly also has those fans that chase him around and when he says “Don’t get in the way,” the fans legit squeal and love him more.
Does not understand why he has a lot of fans. He just loves the game.
#8 Tohma (Pinch Server/Middle Blocker)
Sweet, sweet boy. Boy-next-door type of vibes.
Can talk to anyone. Doesn’t matter if you’re a rival or an opponent he somehow manages to talk everyone up and make friends everywhere he goes.
Because of that his fans also love talking to him and he doesn’t know how to turn them down.
Joined the volleyball team late so he hasn’t had as much practice as the others but works hard on it.
Motivates the team. Good at boosting team morale even though the score is really crap.
Will keep cheering until his voice is hoarse
Overall 10/10 perfect nice guy

One of my go-tos when I have no new Hawkmeat fanfic to read. The basic premise is that Eli, being the shameless adrenaline junkie that he is, takes Demetri walking around on the edge of a tall building, where he goes to forget all the painful memories of the dojo war and Cobra Kai and such. It switches between the boys’ POVs, and the way they describe each other is just...*chef’s kiss* like they both have such heart eyes and are totally oblivious to it until the very end, it’s great! And at the end, when it all comes together...man, I get legit CHILLS every time Eli says “I love you too.” I’M TELLING YOU, IT HITS DIFFERENT.

They have their first kiss while high!!! Them getting high in general and High Demetri especially is pretty damn funny, but it’s also highkey wholesome. It includes one of my absolute favorite Binary Boyfriends tropes, i.e. Demetri tells Eli how much he loves his little lip scar. Every time I see it, I melt into a puddle of tears.

Eli goes over to Demetri’s house after getting jumped by Cobra Kai post Season 3. They hang out, and we get to see them just having fun together!!! And BANTERING in a way that gave me a serotonin boost to last the next 10 years! And a little hurt/comfort with Demetri treating Eli’s wounds and we get a glimpse of their childhood together and when Demetri first started pining. AND THEY KISS! And exchange more smartass comments directly afterwards, it’s glorious XD

Another go-to when I don’t have any new Binary Boyfriends fics to read, honestly. Basically an AU where Demetri manages to get through to Eli when he has him held down in the laser tag place, and Eli doesn’t break Demetri’s arm. Afterwards Demetri, of course, makes Eli hang out with him a bunch to make it up to him XD Has another one of my favorite Binary Boyfriends tropes--Demetri falling in love with BOTH sides of Eli--the timid, quiet, nerdy one and the cocky, snarky, and confident Hawk-esque one. And DEMETRI apologizing for trying to hold Eli back when he wanted to change and gain more confidence, even though it came from a place of fear of losing Eli??? HERE FOR IT. Also a lovely portrayal of Autistic Eli struggling with social cues and not picking up on things that seem “obvious” to others, and I am ALWAYS down for Autistic Eli!!! I mean...it’s basically canon, but super-convincing portrayals can be rare, and this fic NAILS it. Also, the BANTER??? Incredible. 10/10. And Eli kissing SUPER aggressively is always gonna be a YES in my book!

Just a REALLY great hurt/comfort fic and a pretty realistic take on how the trauma of Eli breaking Demetri’s arm would play out for both of them, even after they make up. This fic is actually where I got my headcanon of Eli hurting Demetri during sparring sometimes triggering panic attacks for Eli. And Demetri obviously trusts Eli again on a mental and emotional level, but physically he’s...still scared of him, which is depressing as hell but also heartbreakingly realistic. Also I am ALWAYS down for the Cobras hurting Demetri and Eli UTTERLY FREAKING THE FUCK OUT and realizing his feelings, it’s always just *chef’s kiss* Nothing to match an anguished love confession on death’s doorstep!
How to Inhabit a Body by unsaid_eddie
An AU where Hawk and Eli get split into two bodies, and they gotta figure out how to conjoin again with Demetri’s help! When I first read the synopsis I was like “that’s so goddamn wacky, I don’t know if I can jive with that” but it’s executed like...amazingly??? Like a surprisingly brilliant take on the whole “Eli/Hawk finds balance/union between the ‘Eli’ and ‘Hawk’ parts of his personality” thing, and seeing Hawk and Eli finally admit the things they actually like about each other was surprisingly cathartic. And seeing Eli’s take on his feelings for Demetri vs. Hawk’s take on his feelings for Demetri was somehow equally hilarious and heartbreaking. Also Demetri’s sarcasm here is A+, what an absolute savage legend.

I read this while gorging myself on a bunch of discount candy I bought the day after Valentine’s Day, which made it all the better XD This was so great, like Demetri just utterly trolling Hawk by getting him all these genuinely thoughtful little gifts that spoil the shit out of all the “nerd shit” he used to watch is the perfect blend of hilarious and adorable. And Demetri being a cocky little shit about his big master scheme to lure Eli back to the side of the light, and bragging about said scheme to Miguel??? Priceless. Also, the flashback to little Eli giving little Demetri all of his valentines because he didn’t didn’t like anyone else in their class??? Incredible. 10/10. An inspiration. And Eli’s utter obliviousness that Demetri is into him is, of course, priceless. And Demetri’s simple little love poems to Eli toward the end were just so understatedly sweet. Honestly, this one was entirely worth it solely for the line “Are you trying to fuck the nerd back into me?” Absolutely iconic.

So someone basically took the idea of Hawk saying “You may be a pussy, but you’re MY pussy” to Demetri and made it into a fanfiction...and it’s actually brilliant??? The slow evolution of Hawk going from calling Demetri pussy (derogatory) to pussy (affectionate) is just...fantastic??? And one of the rare examples of a soulmate-esque AU I can actually get into...I’m usually not big into soulmate AUs, if mainly because I’m not crazy about the whole there’s-a-person-you’re-cosmically-obligated-to-date thing XD But this one was EXCELLENT, especially with Hawk having the slow realization that being a “pussy” the way Johnny and Kreese talk about isn’t inherently a bad thing. And him learning to appreciate Demetri for not running headfirst into every fight and settling everything with his fists like an idiot “badass?” HERE. FOR. IT. Also seeing a bit of their childhood friendship and Demetri’s unrequited love angst was just *chef’s kiss*, even though it made my heart hurt real bad. Worth it in the end, though!

A pretty great fic my buddy wrote based on the headcanon that’s been floating around in the Binary Boyfriends fandom that Demetri and Eli definitely did some romantic stuff pre-Cobra Kai without actually realizing it was romantic because...they were each other’s only friend, so they had no basis of comparison XD Seeing all of Demetri’s friends react to him thinking giving your friends comfort kisses ON THE MOUTH was normal was downright hilarious. Also the fact that Demetri has to seriously consider whether he would make out with Miguel before going “mmmm not into it” and Anthony’s brief but brilliant cameo are the BEST FUCKIN THING.

A Golden Compass AU!!! Excellent!!! Demetri’s daemon being a chameleon was surprisingly brilliant--I honestly imagined it being a cat or something, but a chameleon actually fits so much better, considering he always wanted to be invisible. And the part where his daemon is walking around his desk imitating Hawk had me fucking WHEEZING. Also Eli’s daemon as a smol angeri bird, divebombing him? PRICELESS. A bonus is that the daemons for the other characters are also like 1000% appropriate, especially Miguel’s and Johnny’s. A very good time indeed!

Basically a look at the events of Season 3 from Hawk’s POV, but with him being...more explicitly aware that he’s in unrequited love with Demetri D: Also showcases how Hawk fights physically and Demetri fights with words pretty amazingly. Includes such other desirable tropes as Kreese being an absolute fuck, Demetri rambling and complaining about the movie endlessly all throughout Movie Night, Demetri talking a lot in general and Hawk absolutely loving it, adorable flashbacks to them both being younger and Demetri and Demetri alone getting Eli through the really hard days, and of course the Cobras fucking Hawk up and Demetri UTTERLY FREAKING OUT because OH GOD NO PLEASE DON’T HURT MY LITTLE ELI HE IS MY ENTIRE WORLD DON’T YOU DARE TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME (--Demetri any time Hawk/Eli gets hurt, probably). Oh my, someone is sneaking Demetri LOVE NOTES! Who could it be??? Heh, a lovely valentine’s day fic featuring one of my all-time favorite fanfic tropes--one half of the OTP sneaks the other love notes and shenanigans ensue!!! I even tried writing one of these fics, back in the day XD ANYWAYS this satisfied alllll my jealous!Hawk needs, and also??? Demetri being an idiot??? For 6 chapters straight??? Utterly fantastic. Also just really loved the dynamic between Hawk, Miguel, and Demetri in this, and the pretty realistic take on what a friendship between Hawk and Demetri would actually look like after they’ve grown back together after the Christmas fight, but Hawk still being the snarky, overconfident, hot-tempered fuck that he is and also salty as all hell about how oblivious Demetri is XD. And at the end, THEY WRASSLE! THEY SMOOCH! THEY ARE NO LONGER PAINFULLY OBLIVIOUS TO THE FACT THEY ARE IN LOVE! GLORIOUS! And Demetri yelling at Hawk to not be so self-loathing or he’ll beat him up??? The serotonin rush was UNREAL.

Another recent favorite! Do you like Sadboi Eli??? Do you love hurt/comfort fics??? This is the fic for you!!! Admittedly the they/them pronouns for Eli took a little getting used to, but I think the nonbinary Eli idea is a really fascinating concept and I love reading people’s takes on it! And of course, I am absolutely ALWAYS a slut for fics that have Autistic Eli on display, in his/their full glory!!! Like man, I eat that shit up like Halloween candy. There’s a part where Eli gets super stressed out and goes nonverbal for a bit, but Eli and Demetri worked out kind of a hand-tapping language to use in those kind of situations when they were kids so that they can still communicate, and reading about it makes me absolutely WEAK because that is ADORABLE. Plus Sam and Miguel show up and hang with the dudes!!! Sam and Eli talk things out!!! Like the fluff???? Demetri being a supportive boyfriend??? Eli getting to heal from their trauma??? Excellent. Utterly flawless.

Well, I can hardly compile a list of quality Hawkmetri fanfiction without mentioning this one, now can I? It started out as basically a super dark take on the question “What if Demetri just..snapped?” Like what if he finally had enough of Hawk’s bullying and abuse, and just decided to use their past relationship to get the ultimate revenge and mindfuck Hawk into absolute oblivion? I’ll admit, for a while I was just following because I was morbidly curious what utterly fucked up thing would happen next XD But then Demetri and Hawk actually...talk through their issues eventually??? And start dating??? I was not expecting the surprisingly wholesome turn, but I’m absolutely not complaining. And in later chapters, we get an interesting subplot of Robby becoming close friends with Hawk, and both Demetri and Hawk have to reconcile their close friendships with Robby with their close friendships with Miguel, since Miguel and Robby reeeeally don’t like each other. This story has been, and continues to be, an utterly wild ride, but you best believe I’m in it for the long haul.

A wacky magic AU where Demetri uses some supernatural meddling to accidentally swap the “Hawk” from his timeline with the earlier “Eli” from another timeline, so essentially Hawk and Eli swap places and shenanigans and angst ensue. Honestly both really interesting and lowkey heartbreaking to see how Hawk interacts with pre-Cobra Kai Demetri when he’s launched back into that relationship, and how Eli reacts to suddenly having a bright red mohawk and being in the middle of a dojo war where he’s pitted against his best friend. Also Hawk trying to karate-train pre-Cobra Kai Demetri so he can be “toughened up” by the time the inevitable dojo war comes into the picture, and Demetri being utterly appalled at the thought of him and Eli ever hurting each other, even if it’s just in sparring??? Excuse me while I go cry.

Right now it’s still pre-Hawk, but it’s full of fluff and wholesome friendship moments and Demetri and Eli just blatantly crushing on each other and it’s great <3 Honestly a really great interpretation of what their friendship might’ve been like in Season 1, behind the scenes. Also love the take on how they react to Miguel--both happy to have a new friend, but kind of nervous about how the addition of a new person will change their dynamic with each other. I just know this fic’s gonna rip my heart out and stomp on it as soon as Eli turns into Hawk and shit goes down and I am SO ready for it but also terrified, anyways LET’S GOOOOOO

Also an AU where Demetri and Eli were secret boyfriends before Cobra Kai, and a lot of Eli’s self-loathing and destructive behavior comes from internalized homophobia and hating that he’s gay, which is a really compelling take. Also the angst in this absolutely GIVES ME LIFE, even though it makes my heart hurt. Demetri’s anger, while hurting to read, is super realistic. And I really love Eli’s steely determination to fix ALL the broken relationships in his life--not just with Demetri, but with Miguel and Johnny too!!! Do you want to see poor Hawk have a breakdown over Deme getting hurt and get some heartwarming moments where Johnny and Daniel attempt to comfort their Disaster Son??? This is the fic for you! Also Demetri having a foster mom and a not-great home life in general was a really interesting take that I don’t see a lot and a pretty neat concept to explore. Although it DOES add some tension between Eli and Demetri when Eli’s forced to reveal Demetri’s in the foster system, which made my heart ache even more than it already does for them every day D: Here’s to hoping my boys can be happy eventually!!!

I'm literally one weak moment from making V in Elden Ring and going for the bad ending just for the fuck of it. Anyone want to follow that story? I'm legit thinking of making like a in-game diary and being like:
"Dear diary. I woke up on the floor today in a hail of mist and I set it to follow some creepy yellow light through a doorway. I have no idea where the hell I am, and I don't think I have any powers here, so it looks like I'm going to have to start over from the beginning. Also, apparently I'm "maidenless" and a "lowly tarnished". Whatever that means. Anyway, I just want stuff to stop stabbing me for 5 seconds so I can figure out where the hell I am. I'll update you later."
"So diary... Everything here wants to kill me. Like everything. Some dude turned into a bear, and I'm pretty sure a tree just tried to beat me to death. Looks like calmly offering to read them poetry isn't going to cut it here. I'm going to need some way to defend myself. But hey, some creepy doll offered me a bell that can summon spirits, and I have a magic horse. Still better than how most of my days start!"

But hey, I did this in Bloodborne, and I can do it again! (Oh boy did the Bloodborne one go completely off the deep end. I ended up platinuming the game with my V character and that one... I mean, have I finished my first playthrough of Elden Ring? Absolutely not. But this might just be the most fun I've had in a while, if you guys are behind it.

If you’re reading this, I’m coming back to Chicago, beetch
The non-existent rumors are true. After a brief 10-month exit from the city to soak up the fresh air and social distance-friendly suburbs, I am now returning to Chicago as a single, slightly more anxious version of myself. While I’m still trying to kick some of the anxiety and OCD that COVID-19 pushed from “lifelong tagalongs” to “all-controlling demons”, I feel 97% ready to be back where I feel most myself, and cannot wait to welcome that change. While that 3% still makes me a little uncomfy and hesitant, I’m a believer in pushing your boundaries to allow yourself to grow, and also, I am really sick of suburbs food.
Ha! I joke. I wouldn’t move downtown simply for access to more diverse & higher quality food... or would I? All I know is while there are plenty of gems in the North Shore, I’ve eaten take out from all of them ten times over, and I did not foster my dislike of cooking out of nowhere. My parents do not enjoy cooking, my sister pretends to enjoy cooking, and I will cook if it is 5 ingredients or less. My latest speciality is a toasted bagel with butter, hummus, and EBTB seasoning. Voila. So when it comes to dinner, we are living off of a carousel of suburban favorites, and are losing steam as we are still not comfortable with dining inside (or dining inside in the city, where the fun food is).
All of this to say, it’s exciting to imagine what life is going to be like in a few short weeks. While I’m still extra precautionary, I can’t wait to have my own space downtown, where I can enjoy coffee on my little balcony (!!!) and dream of the days friends can come squeeze into my studio safely while I lay out an entire table of sharable spreads and snacks from Ema (Charred Eggplant Spread is the best one, don’t fight me).
So you may ask, how did you come to this decision to move to the heart of downtown out of seemingly nowhere, you hermit?
It starts with my mom and I having a brief, simultaneous breakdown and coming to the conclusion that we would both feel comfortable doing a staycation downtown, as long as we wore masks, sanitized always, and braved the cold to eat outside. This was big for me! As a person with real OCD, not cute TV show “I have to keep my pens straight” OCD, this would be the most exposure I’d had to a lot of uncontrollable variables since the pandemic started. If you’re thinking, “you get to spend a weekend downtown in a hotel with your mom, shut up”, know that I hear you. I am unbelievably grateful that I’ve gotten this time with my parents, and that we can do a staycation. However, having anxiety comes at a cost, and that cost is blowing everything way the fuck out of proportion instead of being able to rationalize it sometimes. Let’s! Normalize! Having! This! Discussion!
So, we went downtown in early March for a two-night stay, and oh my goodness. The realization that we got to be in a different space, and do different things, and eat different food for a weekend made it feel like a legit vacation, and not like we drove 30 minutes to get there. The view from our room was of Michigan Ave, and hearing the traffic and seeing the people out and about instantly made me feel a sense of peace I wasn’t expecting. I’ve lived downtown for 6 years, but it always shocks me how much the city feels like an extension of me once I’m in it after being away. My mom and I went out for a walk (gentle yet forceful reminder to please wear a mask), then decided to grab dinner while we were out. The plan was to bring it back to the room, but there was a warm spell, and there just happened to be a table for two at Topolobampo on Clark, and suddenly we were sitting on the patio under the lights eating masa quesadillas dipped in a spicy salsa verde. It just happened!!!
Before getting downtown, I was tentatively looking at apartments for the spring. I was looking at Lincoln Park, Old Town, maybe Lakeview, and came across a listing in the Gold Cost that caught my eye. That one was swiped out from under me within days, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the area. Then I discovered another unit that was available, and couldn’t shake it from my mind. Over mushroom tacos I discussed it with my mom, and we decided to go see it. Totally not what I had been planning for in terms of location, but why not?
Once we polished off breakfast the next morning (Eggs Benedict with fried eggs, extra hollandaise) we headed out to see the place. Let me say I have never seen my mom fall in love with a single apartment I’ve lived in, and she was ALL. FOR. IT. Unreal reaction on her part. Once I saw the west-facing views and the incredible natural lighting, I was 100% in as well.
We spent the rest of the weekend wandering the downtown area, enjoying another dinner outside at The Gwen and my mom’s first visit to the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, which was 95% more empty than I’ve ever seen it given we went in a pandemic at 8:30PM. Shit on Starbucks all you want, but that Roastery is an incredible use of space (in non-pandemic times) and the coffee & Princi pastries are really, really good.
When we got back home feeling refreshed and like we had actually gone on a vacation, I jumped into apartment shark mode real fast and signed as many documents as the very kind realtor could send over. One week later, whabaam, I was a Gold Coast girl. Ahem, *lady*. What better way to celebrate than going to Somerset and having the Rapini & Roasted Garlic Flatbread and Wild Mushroom Risotto? No clue. As I sat outside, yet again with my mom, I felt a wave of excitement come over me and realized, this is it. This is the sign and feeling I’ve been waiting for, telling me it’s time to move back to the city and start over. The creamy, herbacious risotto also helped solidify that.
SO. After all of that, the news is I’m moving, and you’re probably wondering why I shared all of this on a blog about food. I meant for this post to be about everywhere I ate during my staycation, but realized quickly we ate at some very basic places - DELICIOUS, but still basic. Oops. Below are all the dishes I had and a rundown of the flavors, textures, etc., however don’t expect to find any new, revolutionary restaurants. Sorry!
1. Topolobampo
This Rick Bayless restaurant has been around forever, and unfortunately, you can tell by the interior. We’ve eaten here as a family a couple of times before, but never had a noteworthy experience. I can confirm that in a pinch, the patio covered in fun lights & mini piñatas, and the sharable, filling bites will do just fine. This was my first time going to a Mexican restaurant as a non-alcohol drinker, and instead of my typical mezcal margarita, I opted for a Fresh Limeaide which was refreshing and flavorful. We split the Guacamole and Chips, which if you’ve ever stopped at the Frontera in O’Hare, you know is good as fuck. It’s smooth, creamy, tangy, and topped with chopped onions and cilantro for a little crunch. It’s not the most life-changing, but it is consistently satisfying. Next, we got the Mushroom Tacos and Masa Quesadillas. The Masa Quesadillas were a fun surprise, as instead of a tortilla, the masa is what makes up the outside. They are almost like empanadas and stuffed with gooey, melty cheese, and come with a spicy salsa verde on the side. I would come back for these alone - they’re rich yet light, warm, and comforting, all the things you would want when dining outside when it’s still a little chilly. The Mushroom Tacos were quite frankly unreal, because whatever they seasoned the mushroom slices with and grilled them on made them taste unlike any mushroom I’ve had before. There was definitely some meat crossover on the grill, so don’t order those if you’re vegan, or ask them to prepare the mushroom separately. I however was LOSING MY MIND. Over mushrooms. The joys of being vegetarian!
2. The Gwen
On a happening Saturday night in Chicago, Upstairs at The Gwen is sure to be a packed scene. Located in River North, this hotel bar/restaurant offers a somehow cozy rooftop filled with loungey couches, fire pits, and ambient lighting, even though you’re surrounded by apartments and skyscrapers and there is nothing “cozy” about River North. Every table was filled, yet since you’re outside and it’s fairy spread apart, it still felt safe. I got my new classic, a Lemonade, and we got the Burrata to start. With sourdough, roasted beets, squash, pomegranate, pistachio, & arugula, this plate was nothing short of mouth-watering. It has textures! It has flavors! It has pomegranate seeds, the TikTok must have of the moment! The bread was 10/10, the burrata was 8/10, and all of the toppings made for a very find bite of salad on their own. For my main I got the Lobster Fettucine, a beautiful bowl of “charcoal fettuccine with saffron-tomato sauce, lobster, calabrian chili butter, and basil-brioche crumbs” as listed on their website. Take any of those ingredients and it’s going to be delicious, but all of them TOGETHER? INCREDIBLE. The chunks of lobster were huge, absolutely making the dish worth its price tag, and the sauce was flavorful, unique, and unlike any sauce I’ve tasted in the last few years. It’s typical to do a squid ink pasta with seafood and tomato sauce, but the saffron added a new element I very much appreciated.
3. The Starbucks Roastery
I KNOW. THIS IS A TOURIST DESTINATION. All I am saying is if there’s no line, go get an iced latte with two packets of sugar in the raw. That’s all. It’s really good after something like, I don’t know, Lobster Fettucine.
4. The Penninsula
You cannot go wrong with hitting up The Penninsula for breakfast or brunch, especially if you are staying there and have the option to do room service. Typically we would go to Pierrot Gourmet, the cafe in the ground floor of The Penninsula, however it has been closed temporarily. If there’s one thing to order with your breakfast, it’s the smashed fingerling potatoes. Delish.
5. Somerset
Somerset is becoming a quick go-to of mine for an impromptu dinner downtown, given it’s in the heart of Gold Coast and is cute if you’re sitting indoors or outdoors. The food is nothing too innovative, but it is done well, which is the most important part with “cuter” restaurants that may focus on the Instagram appeal over the food sometimes. Each time I’ve gone I’ve gotten the seasonal flatbread and a pasta or risotto, usually something with mushrooms, and it’s always been plate-licking good. To drink, I got -you guessed it- a Lemonade! For dinner I went with the Wild Mushroom Risotto which was everything you could hope for in a risotto, topped with olive oil, herbs, and local parmesan. We split the Rapini & Roasted Garlic Flatbread which was as it sounds, flatbread covered in rapini, garlic, and ricotta, which added a nice crunch and had enough rapini to feel like it was replacing a boring vegetable side dish or salad. The patio vibes were wonderful, the judgemental girls in the greenhouses looked like they were having a good time, and our waiter couldn’t have been sweeter. I will be going back to try the Fontina Arancini, which I just noticed on the menu. FRICK.
So there you have it, a very long-winded explanation of the last few weeks of my life and where you can find me on a staycation in Chicago. Hopefully once I move back to the city I’ll have endless new spots to try and won’t be basic anymore!
