this leucistic common raven was spotted around anchorage, alaska. leucism is a genetic condition that results in a similar appearance to albino animals. however, leucism differs from albinism in that it’s only a partial loss of melanin; this bird can be identified as leucistic by their blue eyes, which would be pink or red in an albino bird. leucism often causes premature death in birds, as it makes them more vulnerable to predators and social rejection; additionally, melanin is an important component in birds’ feathers, and birds with less melanin may have weak or brittle feathers that result in poor flight or trouble staying warm. however, this individual has survived to adulthood and seems to be in good health as well as accepted by their flock.

Wild Turkeys, including a leucistic female (this coloration occurs in approx. 1/100,000 per Audubon).
photos by me, 2024-03-25. A cloudy day at Cornelia Fort Airpark, so I will try another day when the lighting conditions are better, hoping that the leucistic bird is still around.

In the city of Kuji, where this aquarium is located, the world's northernmost 'Ama' divers still work today. In this tank, active an Ama diver demonstrate free diving. This photo captures the moment when she unearthed a white variant of flounder from the sand. The flounder she was holding was quite adorable.

Welcome home, little Orochimaru!
If I had to describe perfection among snakes - that'd be it.
After years of snakeless limbo, I'm coming back with more energy than ever. After months of hunting, finally got my hands on him - a pure white (well, more like light pink right now, this little guy is not even 1.5 month old yet, the youngest I managed to grab from another breeder in my career), completely spotless Super Fire ball python (Python regius).
Until this very day I'd claim blue eyed leucistic snakes are my jam... This changed the second I saw this guy's black eyes with RUBY pupils that look like they're glowing in direct light. Absolutely unreal in person!
Having big hopes for this boy in the future! ❤️‍🔥

If you ever wondered what the best living vertebrate is, it’s the alligator gar in my totally not biased 100% scientifically backed opinion. They are just a flawless creature. Nothing wrong with them. Good tooth to snoot ratio, they have a winning smile.

They and other monster fish absolutely should NOT be in the hands of most private keepers at all and I do NOT support morph breeding of them because of that, but pretty fishy cute :c

an almost solid white bald eagle was spotted and photographed by a college student in oklahoma. originally mistaken as an albino specimen, this bird is leucistic, a similar genetic condition. leucism occurs when a lack of melanin is found in parts of or through the entire body. in albinism, all pigments are absent, leading to pink skin and eyes in most cases. leucism can still make life harder for birds, as melanin is an important component in both the structure of the eye’s iris and in feather composition. leucistic birds often struggle with weak and brittle feathers and poor vision as a result.
