Hello and welcome to Day 9 of "Let's Explore My Plot Bunnies"
Tumblr media
Today, my brain decided to bring me a classic au for a Mo Dao Zu Shi fic: a Time Travel AU!
Edit: As of February 6th, this fic has a title - "Never too old to learn, never too late to turn"
(Technically speaking, it starts with a Canon Divergence AU, and then the Time Travel starts, but Time Travel and Canon Divergence go hand in hand, so meh....)
To be more precise, it is a Jiang Cheng Time Travel AU (I have read a lot of Time Travel AU in this Fandom but I still have yet to see an "only Jiang Cheng time travels" fic - it's mostly Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji that time travel so give my purple son some solo time travel adventures too)
This idea started from a question: Would Jiang Cheng have realized that Wei Weuxian gave him his core if, instead of Cengqin, Jiang Cheng got Suibian after Wei Wuxian died?
After I got this question stuck in my head, I thought about Jiang Cheng, maybe during Yanli's death anniversary 10 years after Wei Wuxian died, just grabbing Suibian - maybe to scream at it, maybe to try and break it - and accidentally taking the sword out of its sheath. Which, as far as Jiang Cheng knows, should not be possible since it sealed itself after Wei Wuxian died.
And that makes Jiang Cheng start thinking - when did Wei Wuxian last USE Suibian? And why can he take out Suibian after Wei Wuxian's death?
Jiang Cheng is smart. He may have a temperament that rivals that of his mother, but he is definitely not dumb. I do believe he will figure out what happened when he remembers that Wei Wuxian had a bad memory and is a self-sacrificial idiot.
On that day, Jiang Cheng mourns for more than just his parents and sister. He mourns for his brother. The brother he led a siege against. The brother who gave up his cultivation for him. The brother that he should have backed up and protected, not scorned and hated for years even after his death.
From then on, Jiang Cheng lives only with grief in his heart and questions of "what if" in his head. He doesn't like to interact with the other Sects more than necessary because he can't stand to hear them bad mouth his dead brother. Nor can he speak up to defend his brother's memory now since Jiang Cheng knows no one will hear him out and believe him at that.
Well, maybe Nie Huaisang will. He was friends with Wei Wuxian after all, and he never spoke against him, even when Wei Wuxian was protecting the Wens.
Jiang Cheng reconnects with Nie Huaisang because of this. As such, Nie Huaisang tells him about his suspicion of Jin Guangyao being behind Nie Mingjue's untimely death. He also tells Jiang Cheng that he has searched for a lot of ways to bring Nie Mingjue back - one of which was time travel.
Jiang Cheng, despite wanting to just go and kill Jin Guangyao right then and there, is intrigued by the concept of time travel. ("If I could time travel, then maybe I could save Wei Wuxian," is what Jiang Cheng thinks). But, like with all things, there is a catch to time travel: if it fails, you die; if it succeeds, this timeline will be destroyed. As such, the only reason Nie Huaisang is not going to use time travel is because no one else has any idea of Jin Guangyao's crimes and, as much as he wants his brother back, if this fails there will be no one left to avenge his Nie Mingjue.
Jiang Cheng tells Nie Huaisang (in a fit of recklessness and spontaneity) to let him try the time travel method. Although Nie Huaisang tried to make Jiang Cheng rethink this, seeing no result, he relents and helps Jiang Cheng with the preparations - on one condition: if the time travel method (array?) succeeds, Jiang Cheng must try and save Nie Mingjue. Jiang Cheng agrees.
The time travel is successful, and Jiang Cheng wakes up back to that day when Wei Wuxian was first brought to Lotus Pier. Jiang Cheng is overjoyed - his brother (and Wei Wuxian is his brother, and no one, not even his mother, can tell Jiang Cheng otherwise) is alive - scared and malnourished, but alive. Wei Wuxian (for now, Wei Ying) is alive.
Jiang Cheng might have a ton of things to plan for and prevent this time around, but he finally has his older brother and sister back. Lotus Pier is still untouched by war. His parents are alive as well. He vows that this time around, he will do better; be better, so that the future he came from won't come to pass again.
And he is gonna start by making sure his big brother is not as traumatized by dogs. (Wei Wuxian will do well to have a guard dog around him since he gets in so much trouble. Might as well teach him that not all dogs will bite him. Jiang Cheng's dogs will bite others for Wei Wuxian)
A couple of things to note:
I fully believe Nie Huaisang searched for a lot of ways to bring his brother back or to prevent his death altogether. Time Travel included.
Jiang Cheng does NOT like Lan Wangji here. And it's not because Jiang Cheng sees Lan Wangji as arrogant or anything else (even if that does help), but because Jaing Cheng (just like Wei Wuxian) interpreted Lan Wangji's intention to protect Wei Wuxian by bringing him back to Gusu as "come to Gusu so we can punish you" and fully believes Lan Wangji was an "enemy" - as many called him - of Wei Wuxian, not a possible ally. (I swear WWX and JC do share a braincell sometimes.) So here, Jiang Cheng doesn't want Wei Wuxian to interact with Lan Wangji because he doesn't trust Lan Wangji with his brother's safety.
Jiang Cheng will make sure his dogs will maim whoever is mean to his big brother. He will personally train one of the puppies to be Wei Wuxian's personal bodyguard. And he will get Wei Wuxian to get over his fear of dogs - at least partially.
In this AU, baby!Jiang Cheng does not take shit from anybody. He will protect Wei Ying this time around. Jiang Yanli is just happy that her little brothers get along so well.
And that is about it.
So, how was it? Good? Bad? Let me know!
This specific plot bunny is really taking over my brain because protective baby time traveler Jiang Cheng is just so cute. Wei Ying is also adorable because I fully believe he will make a vow to himself to be the best gege in the whole world for Jiang Cheng. They deserve to be happy, and they will be happy in this little plot bunny of mine - even if Jiang Cheng has to go through a lot of angst™️ to get there.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this idea and have a great day/night. Take care of yourselves!
I will see you tomorrow,

jiang yanli defended wei wuxian to anyone who dared to talk shit about him.
wei wuxian would rather say he died of natural causes than let wen ning think jiang cheng killed him.
jiang cheng was ready to make every excuse to the cultivation world for remaining associated with wei wuxian but wei wuxian wasn't going to let him be disgraced on his behalf.
jiang yanli traveled to the burial mounds herself just to give wei wuxian soup and show him her wedding dress.
jiang cheng kept chenqing in perfect condition.
jiang cheng hunted down every cultivator that could possibly be wei wuxian reincarnated but when wei wuxian got reincarnated he just let him go.
jiang yanli loved and protected both jiang cheng and wei wuxian in their broken family, making sure they stood up for each other instead of standing against each other.
jiang cheng would rather sacrifice his dogs and his golden than have to live without wei wuxian.
wei wuxian feels like he owes jiang cheng and jiang yanli his life, but they never wanted his life, they just wanted him.

still kind of insane to me that people talk shit about jiang cheng without fully understanding what he has been through so lets just understand what his mental state is like BEFORE canon begins:
born via a dysfunctional marriage to be the sect heir
father doesnt care for him, mother expects too much from him/everything he does is not enough
has his three dogs just kicked out randomly with no notice because of some kid he's never heard of by the father who never gave him love and/or attention
said father then favours this kid more than him, to the point that the entire world basically thinks that this kid is biologically your father's son as well, which causes even more family dysfunction
despite this still learns to love this kid as his unofficial brother
works his absolute hardest but is always second-best because his new shixiong is naturally talented
nobody appreciates the hard work he puts in at being second place despite the fact wwx literally doesnt work hard for it
masks his emotions with anger as a coping mechanism to minimise the amount of hurt he feels
ok great so now lets actually take all of the above and apply this mental wellbeing to canon events FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE (keep in mind this is literally what jc is seeing/experiencing because he DOESNT KNOW what the reader knows):
brother is off being the protagonist and getting in trouble and gets their sisters marriage ruined
comes home from a year away and then almost immediately has to go and be a hostage where brother continues his protagonist behaviour
gets trapped and nearly dies in a cave with a 400-year-old monster, is in charge of finding a way out and making sure everyone else escapes
brother and a guy who maybe hates him get stuck behind in the cave so now jiang cheng has to boost it home ON FOOT, without food, to get manpower to rescue them, which takes a minimum of a few days likely without any food or sleep
no appreciation or thanks for doing that since brother was more heroic and killed the 400-year-old monster
gets scolded by his father for being annoyed by this
parents immediately get into another fight about father loving wwx more than jc
because of the above shenanigans their sect is targeted next
tries to defend brother against being whipped to death and/or having his hand cut off by mother
witnesses his entire sect being burned and murdered
loses both his parents
decides to sacrifice himself to save his brother's life, instead of dying he is tortured and has his golden core melted
on top of his inferiority issues, the ONE THING he was expected to do was be the sect leader for the yunmeng jiang. the sect that no longer exists. he is now a sect leader with no sect and no golden core. no shit he wants to mcfuckin die
miraculously gets a new golden core but loses his brother
immediately plunged into a war and he's only like 17
spends 3 months trying to find his brother only for his brother to show up doing the Forbidden Magic and necromancy which is Super Disrespectful in their culture like holy shit what are you doing
brother refuses to use his sword in favour of the Forbidden Magics and kind of keeps undermining jc's orders as sect leader which makes jc look weak in front of all the other sect leaders when he's actively trying to rebuild their sect and be respected as a leader
fights a war for [handwaves] an amount of time, certainly a few years minimum, while watching his brother descend further into Unhealthy Behaviour but brother refuses to do anything or talk about it
ends up lowkey being a war hero
the other three great sects (of which there are now only four) swear brotherhood, leaving out ONLY ymj/jiang cheng, which, what the Fuck dude
is now a teenager who has lost his parents who now has to rebuild his sect from scratch with fuck all money, supplies, and support
brother, who promised to always be at his side helping, is not helping, and in fact is actively just getting drunk and being a nuisance and STILL REFUSING TO SAY WHY
entire cultivation world starts to turn on his brother who is now looking like a loose cannon bc he has Forbidden Magics that are Terrifyingly Powerful and also it has been proven that he does not give a fuck about jc's opinion since he's constantly doing whatever the fuck he wants
literally out of nowhere said brother decides to piss off everyone, start fights, and then KILL JIN GUARDS at a camp and MAKE OFF with like fifty people who are part of the family that he just fought a war against and were responsible for slaughtering his family/sect
go to the terrifying haunted mountain where wwx and the wen remnants are and sees that he's essentially starting a new family with a kid and crops, doesn't seem to care that jiang cheng is still trying to keep the ymj afloat and look like they have any strength
brother is still doing Forbidden Magic and refuses to explain why, and now says he'll secede from the ymj so his bad reputation doesn't reflect on jc like he HASNT BEEN DOING THAT THE WHOLE TIME
so now shixiong wants to just abandon jc completely after jc has lost his parents, had to rebuild everything from scratch, while ignoring the promise he's made their whole life? ok fuck you
jc also can't defend him in public because that would turn the ymj into a target and please keep in mind he is a teenager who was expected to do this ONE THING by his parents and he has poured his heart and soul and blood and tears into rebuilding the ymj and they are So Vulnerable Right Now
uhhh what the fuck suddenly wwx kills their sister's husband ?? bro what the FUCK?
everyone rallies to go and attack wwx for this and again jc literally cant do anything about it and refusing to go will just make everyone assume he's on wwx's side and their sect can't afford to be attacked rn
bro what the fuck now THEIR SISTER IS DEAD?????
oh even better now said brother is DEAD
jiang cheng literally has NO ONE LEFT. no friends. no family. no parents, no siblings, everyone he knew growing up is dead. its literally just him and his infant nephew, who by the way, is living with the sect who are the most powerful and also most likely to be super fucking shady so jc has to tread very carefully
so jc spends over a decade raising his nephew ALONE while trying to make ymj powerful and also hunting/killing demonic cultivators that now p much only exist bc his brother invented/popularised the technique
oh yeah and also this whole time the guy who maybe hated his brother is now like EVEN colder and more antagonistic towards jc like it was HIS FAULT that wwx is dead? get fucked lan wangji you didnt even like the guy (or if this is cql/untamed canon: you literally did nothing either so where do you get off on acting like you're better than jc)
over a decade passes and suddenly his dead brother is alive again and causing more problems and acting like the things he did were not major contributors towards jc's entire family and sect dying
More Political Drama Happens and jc has to manage it
suddenly its revealed that the guy he's been co-raising his nephew with is the major villain who caused the entire world to turn on wwx in the first place oh and also it turns out that the fucking miraculous core jc has IS HIS BROTHER'S, WHO NEVER SAID ANYTHING, AND THIS IS THE REASON HE STARTED THE FORBIDDEN MAGICS AND STOPPED HELPING AROUND THE SECT, but he didnt even BOTHER to tell jiang cheng about it
by the way did i mention this was done via an entirely unconsented experimental surgery
and now the brother of the doctor who did the unconsented experimental surgery is ?? mad at jiang cheng about it ???? like he was supposed to KNOW ABOUT THIS when wwx was KEEPING IT FROM HIM ON PURPOSE???
and now theyre all nearly dying in this dumbass temple - and the ONE family member jc still has is literally being threatened with a garotte
oh cool now jc's brother is saying forget the past let's just leave it all behind !!! as though THAT ISNT JC'S ENTIRE LIFE AND TRAUMA and the ONE THING he EVER wanted was for him, wwx, and jyl to be alive and happy, and now wwx is saying just forget it! like FUCK YOU???? does jc truly mean NOTHING???????
oh and now his brother is off gallivanting with the guy who hated him - who it turns out doesn't hate him - and now they're getting married
and jiang cheng is meant to just. pretend all of this never happened and live his life normally. while wwx is out there. being happy and married.
like... if you can read all of this and still treat jc like he's the bad guy, i'm sorry, but you have literally zero empathy. dude had it probably more rough than any of the other main ensemble cast, and i am including jgy in that, because jgy Made His Choices. jc literally just had to let things happen around him helplessly

Mo Dao Zu Shi and Self-Yearning For Reconciliation
There is an overarching lesson within the writing of MXTX that forgiveness and moving on doesn't entail non-verbal consent for a relationship to be salvaged once more or reclaimed as it used to be.
Within SVSSS, we are given the character of Yue Qingyuan desperately seeking the friendship and brotherhood he had with Shen Jiu. Only for that relationship to be provided by another way of Shen Yuan who finalizes he is not the man Yue Qingyuan needed closure from, but is the only one able to give it for the man to find peace with his own choices.
To a lesser extent this is also shown with the relationship between Xie Lian, Mu Qing and Feng Xin at the end of TGCF. This time though, despite Xie Lian associating with them with no ill will, he does not let either man make choices for him and resoundingly makes his own boundaries aware within the reclamation of their friendship.
MDZS does not offer this reclamation of a friendship or the start of one previously lost with another. Unlike the previous two who did yearn for friendship what was between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian had been a stipulation of burden and assumption that started with Jiang Fengmian. Jiang Cheng was to see Wei Wuxian as a servant made friend when brought in, and Wei Wuxian was protector over friend. There was already a set imbalance due to neither naturally being able to choose the roles within their lives for the other and extending parties stating who and what they were to each other.
Jiang Cheng in his already tenuous esteem with himself and resentment of being told he was already viewed as less from his mother, took Wei Wuxian's existence in his life as a displacement of his own claims within life. His sacrifice of his dogs was the precursor for the beginning of their relationship on the allusion of debts between them.
Jiang Cheng gives up the loyalty of a literal pet, for the loyalty of an eventual man. In other words, I will shelter and protect you in exchange. Jiang Cheng does keep to this as children, with the expense of mocking Wei Wuxian's fears as he is want. His stipulations for this begun to escalate over the years and as such the giving of shelter and safety cannot be made up for Jiang Cheng, forever loyalty is now not enough, but why must Wei Wuxian also be adept at cultivation, why is he to be praised for his deeds more so, why must Wei Wuxian be a bright mind of the war.
If he is to be that, it at least would be overshadowed that he is still only under Jiang Cheng's rule. Otherwise every other action against this, is to demean Jiang Cheng, to oppose him, to cause trouble with ingratitude. It is also why, despite Wen Qing and Wen Ning having sheltered him and Wei Wuxian as well as collected his parents and provided their ashes, Jiang Cheng is able to disregard his obligation to help them. If not for Wei Wuxian's supposed insubordination, Jiang Cheng would not have suffered his own losses. Even when he did protect Wei Wuxian, the loss of it was too much, as with the dogs he had given up as a child, he did not get an active said promise of more dedication made up tenfold for the minimum kindness exhibited by Jiang Cheng. As said by Fang Mengcheng, "Atonement? You cannot actually be feeling grateful to him!”
To want to be good and to protect others, must come with selfish want for exemption of guilt for the harm you have caused. Wen Ning and Wen Qing owed it to Jiang Cheng for the deaths of his parents for carrying the surname of Wen, as such he did not need to repay them. Wei Wuxian sat at the table of the Jiangs and was given a living others would envy, as such he owed his life to Jiang Cheng. Wei Wuxian taking on the burden of protecter of another, was a betrayal of all that Jiang Cheng's lineage had gave him. To do the impossible because it is right, is not worth the self emulation and ridicule of the many. And while he may resent that kindness in Wei Wuxian, for it to be given to others as well, is a lack of loyalty of the ideals of Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng's growing resentment of Wei Wuxian's choice of kindness over safety, is a a mirrored resentment that Jiang Cheng holds within himself and his lack of respect for his own Clan ideals. A servant under the lord of the house embodies what Jiang Cheng was born to be.
As he throws abuse upon Wei Wuxian at their penultimate clash, while he does say sorry, he is still unable to view it without the veil of debt owed between each other. As Wei Wuxian could not tell him he gave him his core out of pity for his ego to keep him from shattering, Jiang Cheng could not say he protected Wei Wuxian out of a moment of kindness without care for the consequences until it expounded as his reality.
There is a self soothing mechanism, that opening up to truths will eventually mean a mending of what had been, or the beginning of something better. Yet this is only true when both are open to stand together as equals. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng began with obligation and ended with obligation. The obligation to give for doing, the obligation of sorry for redemption. The obligation of servitude for sacrifice.
To rebuild and start again is meant to be the closure of ill will and the understanding of boundaries that cannot be crossed now. Jiang Cheng can only do one but not the other. He chooses hate for his continued nature, even while he is adamantly protecting Jin Ling by the end. While Wei Wuxian knows that resentment is not something that will create true happiness and nurturing growth that people strive for.
Reconciliation is to come to terms with that which you lacked, and to be more, to be better. Jiang Cheng accepts his core nature of resentment which would not last next to the altruism that Wei Wuxian chooses more than once. Kindness and Resentment cannot coexist at the same time. To resent is to be cruel, to be happy is to be kind. Both men are too tired to understand the other, and why they choose to part as a peace offering, an understanding that they will never thrive with the other.

Fic Finder
Feb 24th
~*~
1. Eyyyy it's me boyfriend XD (eyyyyy hello again 😊 - Mod C)
I'm here for a fic (I think it's a time travel fic) that I forgot the name of. All I remember is a scene where a village in Lotus Pier was flooded and Yanli, Jiang Cheng, and Wei Ying went to aid the people. Lan Zhan and Jin Zixuan also tagged along but Lan Zhan is openly courting Wei Ying on that fic while Jin Zixuan is being himself
And that's sadly all that I remember 😔. Thank you!
FOUND? This is probably a stretch but #1 isnt And Time Is But a Paper Moon by sami (M, 139k, WangXian, XiChengQing, Time Travel, Fix-It, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Healing, Mental Health Issues, PTSD, Hurt/Comfort, Depression, BAMF WWX, BAMF JC, BAMF LWJ, BAMF JYL, Getting Together), is it?
~*~
2. There was this fic I read sometime ago and it was about how lan Wangji accidentally uses silencing spell on wwx too hard that wwx isn't able to open his mouth again and lan Wangji isn't able to lift the spell. It's during the cloud recesses study arc and the major issues with the permanent silencing spell is that Wei Wuxian isn't able to even eat anything and he can't practice inedia fir long. Please find this fic?

4. Brain cannot brain rn so I need you guys' help finding a fic
So like, it was a Canon divergent fic where wwx submitted himself to the clans and was ordered to be cleansed of resentful energy in order to... prove he wasn't corrupted? Something like that? For the Wens? And it was ritual dual cultivation. He was sent blindfolded to a room so he couldn't tell who it would be (it was lwj, of course.) Wwx knew it wouldn't exactly work cuz he didn't have a core, but he did it anyway.
There was a second.... part? Chapter? The was from Lwj's pov of after, where he finds out about the core, then JC? A Jiang disciple? Shows up to tell them to get their asses to the conference hall because JGS is being JGS and this whole thing was mostly just a distraction
That's all I can remember, thanks for the help!
Hi 👋 4 from the latest fic finder, a friend on discord found the fic I was looking for! It was 'the meaning of the ritual' by newamsterdam

Jiang Fengmian is the Chief Cultivator and comes to talk to Jiang Cheng. They're talking in Nie Huaisang's room and he and Lan Xichen are standing outside it. 9. Hello, I am looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian is not brought into the body of Mo Xuanyu. Rather a random cultivator does the ritual instead as revenge for killing his family in the nightless city. His terms are for Wei Wuxian to despair, so naturally WWX finds Lan Wangji and falls in love only for the ritual wounds to start trying to kill him for not despairing. He nearly loses his arm before they figure out how to save him. Happy ending.
There's also a few bits about WWX trying to get the sword of his body's og owner to come around and work with him. @shinyobsessed

10. Hi! Can someone help me find this fic, please?
Lan Wangji is a post-war-soldier and nowadays is actually helping people to adopt a therapeutic “bunnie”. A man named Wei Ying goes there trying to find a bunnie to adopt, lwj get supper mad because this “man” is loud and disastrous and ask (order) him to go out of there. Later he learns with lxc that “Wei Ying” is actually Wei Wuxian, one of the most dangerous people from the war.
Lwj gets sad about his treatment towards wwx, because both of them are very traumatized by the war. That’s the beginning for their future relationship. It’s setting in modern setting too.
Thank you! @weicongee

11. Hi hi! There's a modern au fic I'm looking for that I can't find no matter how many tag searches I do! It's a modern au where wwx gets drunk and sad bc he loves lwj and he doesn't think he cares for him back. Nhs calls lwj for a rise home for him, but wwx doesn't know its him and "services" him on the way home if you know what I mean
I think it ends with nhs texting one of them to talk to each other so they finally get together
FOUND?🔒Nie Huaisang plays cupid like a baller by KizuKatana (M, 10k, WangXian, Accidental drunken confession, Dirty Talk, sort of mistaken identity, Alcohol as a Coping Mechanism, so much pining, So many tropes)

12. hello i am looking for a fic where lan wangji is a stripper and wei wuxian is the bodyguard who is protective of him, and it was probably xianwang @ahiku-chan
~*~
13. hi! Last year I read a fic where Wei Ying is kept imprisoned or like in an unresponsive state in Jin Guangyao’s secret room behind the mirror. He’s accidentally consumes/cursed with a spell that requires him to have sex to stay alive? Jin Guangyao then calls Jiang Cheng to pick him up and they return to Lotus Pier where after a couple of days Wei Ying like I have to leave cause I don't deserve to be here. Lan Zhan then finds him in a state of delirium. That was the last update then. Thank you sm

It was a Canon divergence AU, WWX thought Something Was Probably Up when he got the invite to JL's one month celebration so went in disguise as a woman, and the first line was him hitting on LWJ, who obviously twigged almost right away and took him to an inn, and that was all I got to.
Sorry it's not much to go on but hopefully someone recognises it! Thank yooou 💕 @scenicpixie

17. Hi, I'm not sure if this is how this works. If I'm doing it wrong please let me know.
I've been looking everywhere for a story where Wei Ying is a reincarnated phoenix and doesn't know it. He eventually finds out and because of everything he goes through, he's taken over by the pheonix, and the firebird part of him wants to destroy the world.
I remember the sects locked him in the Gusu caves while they tried to find out how to control him.
Eventually Lan Zhan figures out a loophole where the Phoenix/firebird agrees to hold off until Lan Zhan dies...and then Lan Zhan cultivates immortality as a loophole. I remember it was on AO3 and was complete.
I'd be grateful for any help you guys could give me. @vitolieltrue

I have this vivid recollection of butch lan wangji with short hair sitting in a bar (?). maybe a controversial opinion but while i really love jiang cheng as a character he is deeply self-centered as a person. and seeing people fight tooth and nail claiming he isn't, or is just misunderstood, or that he has genuine valid reasons to be selfish when plenty of other characters make the difficult choice to forego status and opportunities for what they believe is genuinely right to do (read: wei wuxian, wen ning, wen qing, lan wangji, jiang yanli, mianmian, etc.)
it's just odd to me. especially if they're talking about the novels.
mxtx didn't give jiang cheng the name "sandu shengshou" as a quirky coincidence. there's a REASON she named him & his sword after the 3 poisons of Buddhism (specifically ignorance, greed, and hatred). it's crucial to the story that jiang cheng is NOT selfless and that wei wuxian IS.
it's important to accept that wei wuxian is, by their society's standards, not morally gray; he represents several Buddhist ideals in direct contrast of jiang cheng and multiple people attest to wei wuxian's strong moral character, which is a lot of why jiang cheng even feels bitter about him to begin with.
it's crucial, because by the end of the novel jiang cheng realizes the extent of this and begins to let go!
the twin prides thing wasn't jiang cheng wanting them to 100% mirror the twin jades. he does care about wei wuxian, but he wanted wei wuxian to stay his right hand man, in part the way wei changze was for jiang fengmian.
and if there's one thing you can notice about wei changze in the novels, it's that literally nobody talks about him. he is only ever mentioned when his cool mysterious mountain sect wife cangse-sanren is mentioned, or (even more rarely) when they discuss him as a servant to jiang fengmian. regardless of jiang fengmian's own feelings, wei changze was considered lesser to him and didn't seem to outdo him, since nobody's out there years later still waxing poetry about wei changze's skills.
it may not be the only thing jiang cheng wants out of a twin pride dynamic, but it is a big part of it. regardless of his parents' intentions in taking wei wuxian in and treating him certain ways, this twin pride right-hand man thing is what jiang cheng has felt owed since childhood. he gave up his dogs for wei wuxian, people gossip about his sect heir position with wei wuxian there... jiang cheng wants the reciprocation of what he views as personal sacrifices.
he is ignorant to the depth of what wei wuxian must've suffered for over 6 years as a malnourished orphan child on the streets. he hates how wei wuxian's intelligence, witty charm, and cultivation abilities are naturally stronger than his own. he does care about wei wuxian a lot and want them to be together as sort of-brothers, sort of-friends, sort of-young master and sect servant...
...but if it's between that unclear (yet still caring) relationship and being able to save himself just a little bit more, jiang cheng nearly always manages to clam up in the face of danger and choose the latter, which ultimately benefits himself most. maybe it's a stretch to call that sort of thing greed, but it certainly isn't selfless.
there are of course plenty of justifications for this. it's his duty as sect heir. his home and sect was severely damaged by the wen attack and subsequent war; he had to protect himself, etc.
but doesn't that prove the point?
wei wuxian may be charming, but in terms of pure social standing, he is lower and far more susceptible to being punished or placed in harm's way by people who have more power and money. to protect wei wuxian, yunmeng jiang's long-term head disciple and semi-family member, even in the face of backlash and public scrutiny would've been the selfless thing to do. this is what wei wuxian does for the wen remnants in the burial mounds.
jiang cheng does not choose this. it's not even an unreasonable choice for him to make! nobody else in the great clans is doing such a thing, stepping out of line to take on a burden that could weaken them in the long-run. wei wuxian himself doesn't hate jiang cheng for it; he lets go of these things and focuses on what good he can do in the present.
jiang cheng thinks further into the future - what would happen to him if he continued vouching for wei wuxian and taking his side? what about jiang cheng's face, his sect's face? would wei wuxian even care to reciprocate somehow? everyone expects him to cut off wei wuxian for being dangerous, for threatening his position, for...
do you see what i mean? to call jiang cheng selfless for falling in line with exactly what people expected him to do after the war is not only wrong, it's foolish.
"but they faked their falling-out!" okay. why fake it to begin with, except to protect jiang cheng and the jiang sect's own face? is that selfless? who does it ultimately serve to protect? wei wuxian canonically internalizes the idea that he stains all that he touches, including lan wangji, and agrees to the fake fight because he doesn't want to cause the jiang sect harm. regardless, it eventually slides into a true falling-out, and in the end jiang cheng is more or less unscathed reputation-wise while wei wuxian falls.
that isn't selfless. it's many things! it's respecting his clan and his ancestors, it's making a good plan for the future of his sect and cultivation... but it isn't a truly selfless in the interest of what's right rather than in the interest of duty and what's good for him and his family lineage.
that brings me to my next point: even though wei wuxian hid the truth of the golden core transfer, jiang cheng spent nearly 20 years believing that the golden core "renewal" he was given was a birthright gift of wei wuxian's from baoshan-sanren, an immortal sect teacher of wei wuxian's mother's and a martial elder to wei wuxian.
of course we all know that's a big fat lie, but jiang cheng believed that wei wuxian gave up a critical emergency use gift to him for decades! he was lied to, yes, but jiang cheng immediately agreed without even needing to be convinced. the light in his dead eyes came back with hope the moment wei wuxian even said baoshan-sanren's name. he accepted wei wuxian's offer to give that up to him and take it via identity theft without missing a beat.
with how mysterious and revered baoshan-sanren is, that's obviously not a light sacrifice to just give up to anyone, no matter how close they might be to you. pretending to be wei wuxian to take the gift could even be considered dangerous. what if she found out and got offended? could wei wuxian be hurt by that?
jiang cheng doesn't even hesitate. wei wuxian is the one who mentions that if jiang cheng doesn't pretend to be him, the immortal master could get angry and they'd both be goners. and funnily enough, the day they do go to "the mountain", jiang cheng is the one worried and suspiciously wondering if wei wuxian was lying to him or had misremembered.
of course they've both been traumatized like hell prior to this point. but still: it speaks to how broken he was at the moment as well as to his character overall.
i digress: jiang cheng "gets his golden core back" via what he believed was a gift that should've been wei wuxian's to use in serious emergencies. rather than use it for himself, wei wuxian risked his own safety and gave it to jiang cheng... and jiang cheng still ends up embittered and angry, believing that wei wuxian is arrogant and selfish.
if he truly views them as 100% brothers and equals with no caveats, why would he think that way? it's not like he needs to grovel before wei wuxian for doing that, or to reciprocate... but this is what i mean when i say jiang cheng feels he is owed things by wei wuxian. wei wuxian's actions hold a very different weight in jiang cheng's mind, and jiang cheng himself doesn't ever act the same way, except once.
is it wrong for him to feel like he is owed something? it depends. many asian cultures, including my own, feel that a person owes their family in ways that may not make sense to westerners. for example, it's considered normal for a child to owe their parents for giving birth to them, or to other caretakers for feeding, clothing, sheltering, educating them, etc.
however, something like verbally saying "thank you" or "i'm sorry" to family is considered crazy- why would you owe that? you're supposed to inconvenience your family; saying thank you or sorry is the sort of thing you say to a stranger or acquaintance. i get half-seriously lectured by my elders on this a lot even now, even though they know such phrases are just considered good manners in the US.
this muddies up the idea of wei wuxian being jiang cheng's family vs his family's charge or servant even more. jiang cheng wants wei wuxian to be close... but ultimately doesn't really choose to use what power he DOES have to protect wei wuxian. he considers himself still owed something that in his mind wei wuxian flagrantly never repays.
this isn't even getting into how despite spending a majority of his time with the yiling patriarch he never once noticed that wei wuxian stopped using any spiritual power-based cultivation. even lan wangji, who met them far more rarely, realized that something was wrong and that wei wuxian had taken some sort of spiritual damage, hence the "come with me to gusu".
of course manpain is fun and i'm not immune to the juicy idea of them reconciling and talking things out... but jiang cheng is deeply mired in his own desire to be "above" wei wuxian in multiple ways, and doesn't realize the extent of wei wuxian's actions, the intentions behind them, and the consequences wei wuxian knowingly faced for them.
to not recognize this about jiang cheng, especially in the novels, is really revisionist if you ask me. i reiterate that i really do like him a lot. he's flawed, angry, traumatized and has poor coping mechanisms, an overall fascinating character... but he is not selfless nor ideal, and i seriously draw the line at people saying he is.
wen ning shoves this all into his face at lotus pier to disastrous results. it is the reason why jiang cheng's a total mess at guanyin temple, and the reason jiang cheng ultimately doesn't tell wei wuxian about the fact that he ran towards the wens on purpose.
for that one last act of his to have really been selfless, he needs to not seek anything in return. he did it purely because it was right to do to protect someone else. if that means wei wuxian never finds out about it, so be it.
that moment that ended up causing jiang cheng irreversible harm is not a debt that wei wuxian owes him. it hurts, but no matter how bitter it is, that realization is so important to him changing in the future.

I think what kills me about Jiang Cheng antis is that a lot of their talking points reek of anti survivor rhetoric. As someone who is a survivor and has done a lot of advocacy for victims and survivors of power based personal violence, I want to be the first to inform you that the narrative of the “pretty survivor” (which is steeped in cishet normative, white supremacist, and ableist ideas) is an extremely rare case. Trauma survivors are rarely pretty. The Wei Wuxian’s of the world are incredibly uncommon.
Trauma--especially intense, horrific trauma like what Jiang Cheng went through--often leads to intense issues of anger and hatred. It makes you deeply emotional and can often lead to you becoming unstable. Jiang Cheng lost his entire family and community in the span of a few years. He didn’t have access to therapy (something that literally anyone would need to heal from that), he had to rebuild his entire sect, likely had to fight an uphill battle in order to be a significant part of Jin Ling’s life, all while cleaning up the mess that Wei Wuxian left behind.
This is not to hate on Wei Wuxian, he’s my third favorite character (after Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji) and I love him deeply, but he left behind a legacy that Jiang Cheng had to clean up. Whether or not he realized this would happen, Wei Wuxian created a cultivation path (gui dao/ghost cultivation) that is extremely dangerous and horrific. While I still don’t know if I believe that Jiang Cheng killed every demonic cultivator he came across, I don’t know that it was necessarily a bad thing that he did kill them. We’ve talked a lot in the cxc server about gui dao and demonic cultivation and just how much it harms the mind and body. Wei Wuxian is the exception to the rule in having such control over it and even he eventually succumbed to it. If demonic cultivators are causing great harm, then a cultivators job is to stop that harm and the source of it. That may mean killing the demonic cultivator. I think people get mixed up when (I think it was Jingyi) said that Jiang Cheng kills the wrong person. I believe it was @twilightarc-gm who said that “wrong” doesn’t imply innocent but rather the fact that the person isn’t Wei Wuxian. We know that Jiang Cheng spent thirteen years trying to find Wei Wuxian and when he does find him, he doesn’t kill him despite having literally every reason to.
Like idk y’all, if the guy that got my entire clan wiped out, my sect burned down, and caused the deaths of my sister and her husband died and came back from dead, I wouldn’t just threaten him with a dog and yell at him. I would kill him. But he doesn’t he has every opportunity to in multiple instances after confirming that it’s Wei Wuxian, but he never does. He seems more interested in dragging Wei Wuxian home (literally stating that he’s going to bring Wei Wuxian home to Lotus Pier to kneel before his parents’ graves). Like that doesn’t imply that he’s going to kill Wei Wuxian, but rather make him repent.
I think it’s telling that despite a lot of Jiang Cheng’s hurt and pain, he still chooses to not severely hurt or kill Wei Wuxian, it would be within his right to do so, but in the end after it’s all over, he let’s Wei Wuxian go. He doesn’t tell Wei Wuxian that he sacrificed himself for him, because he knew that Wei Wuxian would feel guilty and obligated to him, just like Wei Wuxian knew Jiang Cheng would feel guilty and obligated. That to me shows a survivor choosing to break the cycle of hurt and pain and I have to question why Jiang Cheng antis so often choose to ignore the side of him that does love Wei Wuxian (it’s up to the viewer whether they see that love as romantic or platonic), enough so to let him go and not burden him with pain.
Jiang Cheng’s story and character arc is at it’s core about trauma, survival, and rising above dire circumstances despite the odds. He attempts the impossible and manages to succeed in it. And to ignore that is a disservice to his character, survivors of trauma, and the effort MXTX put into creating such a complex and interesting character.

A reminder that canon Jiang Cheng
Loves his lil nephew dearly
Will only marry someone who treats his nephew right
Loves dogs 🐕
Is willing to keep his equally important sacrifice a secret and never held it over Wei Wuxian in any way when he could have
Was willing to let Wei Wuxian move on in the end
Built up Lotus Pier back to its former glory pretty much on his own from the tender age of 18+
Could have used Wei Wuxian's DC to his own advantage and made the Jiang Sect an absolute powerhouse like the Wens, but never did
But yeah, he's totally the main, evil step mom villain, am I right, guys? 🤪🤡🤡

I read your analysis and anti bakugou posts and I want to say thank you!
Going to be kinda long so I’m sorry!
There is another fandom where there is character exactly like bakugou; angry, violent, egotistical and target his hate and aggression to one person only.
the character name is Jiāng cheng from the MDZS novel. But the narrative in the story doesn’t treat all the shit that jerk did as right, it the opposite. He seen as vile that nobody want to associate with (getting banned from all the match making places in the story even)
He never takes the spotlight of the two main nor he is redeemed characters instead seen as pathetic and arrogant jerk he is. The MC, Wei wuxian who was his adoptive brother (not really more like a servant that got treated like a dog) cut ties with him in the end.
He a well written and rounded character but the character personality is shit and I don’t really like him. And the narrative isn’t treating him any differently than being a piece of shit
Why I’m telling you this? Because I feel like if MHA have been written by someone who isn’t Hori bakugou would not have gotten away with the shit he did in the story.
beside the point of the way the narrative treat Jiang cheng, it’s the fandom. When I got into the MDZS fandom I was so disappointed to see bakugou stans 2.0 there but instead of bakugou it’s Jiang cheng.
Both bakugou and Jiang cheng get the same treatment in the fandom as “UWU needs to protect the angry violent person” and “it’s the MC fault our cute UWU baby didn’t do anything wrong” and lots of stuff that I bet you seen in the bnha fandom
It’s sad that even if the story shows that what Jiang cheng wasn’t right (unlike bakugou case where the story doesn’t make him have any consequences) people would outright be mean to other people just because they follow the canon prototype of the character in their fics (I seen it and it’s horrible)
And, in fics it’s seems that every time that Jiang cheng appears in the scene he makes everyone OOC (if the fic is sticking to canon personality). Makes them act like they won’t ever act; it’s the same thing with bakugou (in canon and fanon respectively sadly)
I love to call it the “black hole effect” when a certain character just make the scenes about them no matter the context, like a black hole.
Im sorry this is all over the place, im not really good with words and i used to be pretty active in both fandoms but now its really hard because bakugou and Jiang cheng stans are overall tiring to deal with and they seems to grow up in numbers everyday and yeah… 👍
Have a nice day and week!
Hi! I've never read it but it sounds interesting.
I always try to tell Bakugou stans, it's not the fact that Bakugou's an awful person. I don't care about that. Fictional characters aren't real and can be liked for whatever even if they're vile pieces of shit. It's okay to like a vile piece of shit.
What's not okay is creating that vile piece of shit and then brushing over and never calling out their horrible actions. What's not okay is everyone around them condoning their behavior. What's not okay is pandering to them over their victims. What's not okay is never making them face consequences for their actions. What's not okay is constantly putting them on a pedestal for doing the bare minimum.
Look at Vegeta (RIP Toriyama). Vegeta is always getting humbled and called out. He is never going to surpass Goku because never getting what he wants is part of his retribution. Considering his actions, he should be worse than Bakugou. But he's a way better character because of how the narrative and the other characters treat him.
(You can even compare specific instances. When Bakugou rushed ahead and attacked Kurogiri and got Thirteen seriously hurt, no one said a thing to him and he still won all his fights. He faced zero repercussions. When Vegeta let Cell absorb 18, he immediately got his ass kicked and had to get saved by Trunks and Krillin. Vegeta's actions always affect him terribly, Bakugou's actions always affect everyone else terribly while he gets off scott-free)
DBZ came out decades ago and it still created a better character arc than a 2010s-2020s manga. Horikoshi could have easily given Bakugou a proper redemption arc. He chose not to

my dearest fellow mdzs stans, i really don't want to spoil anyone's fun but sometimes some things must be said. please do NOT mistake fanon characteristics for canon characteristics because by GOD is it frustrating to dissect a character when all anyone wants to do is blindly turn away from the very vivid and metastasizing flaws.
jiang cheng is an extremely complicated character, and that's why we love him. but by god, he is a jealous, self-victimizing asshole with a massive inferiority complex who likes to torture (probably) innocent look-a-likes of his (as far as he knew) dead adjacent family member. jesus christ this isn't some simple case of miscommunication (well it is but, you know no amount of communication will ever mend the giant chasm that developed between them. especially not with asians raised within the most classical case of asian parenting, i mean come on now) but a matter of deep and intense self-loathing developed since early childhood projecting violently outwards. let me be clear. he hates wei wuxian. he loathes him. he wants to kill him with his own hands again and again so some part of his convoluted sense of justice and superiority will be fulfilled. he's a classist, a bully, and abusive to everyone around him. ong at the end of mdzs, i was nearly crying tears of joy when jin guangyao flayed him flat on his ass bc that man needed to hear it. he needed to feel it. he needed to stop blaming others and blame himself.
and!! he's homophobic!! the entire cultivation world is, yes, but he's the only one we see give wei ying and lan zhan active shit for it!!
point is...his complexity makes him interesting. as a child, he was pretty alright tbh. he was understandably upset when three of his dogs got taken away and he saw his dad give a completely random kid such a gentle hug when jiang cheng never received one so far. he was a kid, and it was sad and helped the readers get a glimpse at the already dysfunctional family dynamics before wei ying came into the picture. as an adolescent/teen, yes he had a lot of unresolved rage and inferiority issues building up when he was constantly being compared to wei wuxian by his mother and not given enough reassurance from his father (once again, all present before wei ying...everyone just likes to dump the shit on him bc it's easier to point fingers at others than at yourself). perhaps he could have turned out differently if literally either of his parents stepped up and took accountability. however, after the burning of lotus pier? after the golden core transfer? after wei ying stuck around as his subordinate just as he promised, and protected jiang cheng like he promised, and defected just to save the yunmeng clan's reputation so jiang cheng doesn't have to put up with the other clan's shit, still continuing to keep his promise? after wei ying's death? idk abt y'all, but all bets are off bro.
mxtx makes it a point to make him so irredeemable. he's an exploration of what can go wrong if you let your traumas, self-hatred, and revenge fantasies blind you. he has the worst traits of his parents for a reason, directly contrasting with the other sibling, who is a perfect picture of eldest daughters born into a dysfunctional family. jiang yanli has the best traits of her parents (in terms of compassion and standing up for her family), but the family dynamics also made her the way she was. the responsible, the mediator, the occasional mother, stepping in where madam yu cannot.
there's just so much potential to hold him accountable buried under the pretense of misunderstandings and kinnie moments. he just had so many chances, more than any other character, to make a different choice. to actually look past his misgivings and unlearn the bad habits he used to protect himself as a child. i'm not saying he has to magically heal from all his traumas, but at the very least know not to be like his parents. but he wasn't written that way. because that is what happens when you give into your insecurities and generational trauma.
bottom line: jiang cheng is a fantastic archetype that needs to be explored in all his authenticity, including his moments of loyalty and cruelty.

MDZS Shapeshifting Cultivation AU plans
this is mostly just a note for my future fanfic writing, because I have a lot of fic ideas surrounding these ideas and plan to link this post in their notes. posting this publicity for any feedback (pls i beg any ideas) and if anyone wishes to use this as well for fics go ahead!!
Non-cultivators do not have animal traits. These traits come through by learning shape-shifting cultivation.
Not only is it extremely difficult to learn to hide their traits, it is extremely rude to do so for many reasons. The main and biggest reason is hiding your traits as a cultivator is like a big “fuck you” to your ancestors.
While there is A LOT of genetic factors, that is not always the case. The genetic factor is usually just upon the main clan families. A cultivator can never gain traits from the main clans, so they are seen as mythical beings even within this universe.
For rogue cultivators it’s USUALLY random, and can even be from the outer clan types. This is because somewhere in their family tree far back there would have been someone from this clan.
Cultivator children born within a main clan branch have their animal traits from a very young age, and they do not typically change beyond a FEW exceptions. If these changes ever happen, even to outer branching families it’s seen as negative, as they have “abandoned” their clan.
Qishan — Wen family are wolves, outer branches are based on house dogs
lmao wwx is scared of dogs it’s perfect
Wen Rohan — Black wolf (like a Tiangou)
Wen Chao — Brown wolf
Wen(Zhao) Zhuliu — Asian Black Bear, often confused as a dog bc he was taken in by the Wens and all that
Wen Ning — Siberian Husky
Wen Qing — German Shepherd
Wen Yuan — Rabbit (??? i’ll explain it in the fic. maybe. maybe it’s better to just leave it a mystery LMAO)
Yunmeng — Main Jiang family wild/big cats, otherwise house cats
Jiang Fengmian — Leopard
Yu Ziyuan — Spider
Jiang Cheng — Lynx
Jiang Yanli — Tiger
Wei Wuxian — Black Fox
Wei Changze — Maine Coon
Lanling — Main Jin family are Peacocks, otherwise birds
Jin Guangshan — Peacock, normal coloring
Jin Zixuan — Peacock, normal coloring
Jin Guangyao — Peacock, white coloring
Qin Su — Peacock, Red coloring, was thought to be a phoenix so… yeah that. happened.
Mo Xuanyu — Peacock, Charcoal/Black colored, often called a crow to belittle his heritage
Jin Ling — Qiongqi
Xue Yang — an actual crow
Qinghe — Main Nie family are Qilin, others are other horned beings (deer, moose, sheep, ect.)
Gusu — Only main family are Dragons, others are bunnies (how does this make sense? it doesn’t but it just is how it is.)
Also, eastern dragon, not western. Wormji.
Lan Wangji’s mother was a White Long-tailed weasel.
Other
Song Lan — Black bat (it’s funny bec–)
A-Qing — a mole
Baoshan Sanren and her disciples become Nine-Tailed Foxes through cultivating. One of if not the only exceptions to changing attributes the cultivation world has ever seen. Nobody knows how it’s done, and only her disciples have ever become nine-tailed foxes.
This pisses off the Wens no doubt, because they think as canines the Nine-Tailed Fox should belong to them.
Cangse Sanren was a grey nine-tailed fox
Xiao Xingchen was a white nine-tailed fox

Injury caused love?
Tumblr media
Requested by anonymous: hi hi lovie!! i love your writings so much!! they are so freaking good!! could i make request please? can i request a jiang cheng x fem!reader who’s a healer from the lan clan? she mainly is brought along on most missions, acting as the head doctor/healer of most of the clans; almost as good as wen qing. reader interacts with jiang cheng a lot bc jin ling is always getting injured. reader has the motherly/older-sister vibe; always taking care and letting some of the students (mostly sizhui and jingyi) sneak into their infirmary at night for snacks or comfort. jiang cheng and reader? OBLIVIOUS HOPELESS ROMANTIC AND TSUNDERE. nie huaisang, lan xichen, jin guangyao, and wangxian all bully them for their stupidity </3 even the juniors try getting them together,,, jin ling accidentally calls the reader auntie in front of jiang cheng,,, so soft for jiang cheng…i love
Pairing: Jiang Cheng x fem!reader
Word Count: 2706 words
Warnings: none
A/N they don't get together in the end, if you want I'll make a part 2 where they get together, but only after I've finished all other requests :)
Tumblr media
You stared at the boys in front of you, trying to wrap your head around the story they just told. Mostly you were confused at how Jin Ling happened to be the victim since the boy was usually the one to not get injured. Nonetheless, you quickly told them to sit down before grabbing everything.
"Alright. Sizhui, hold this on his arm and put a lot of pressure on it. I have to get some herbs first, I'll be back in a few minutes." You said as you handed the towel to Sizhui before walking out of the room.
You looked through your stash, not much further from your practice and got the necessary herbs before walking back too your practice, only to be stopped halfway by Xichen, Mingjue and Jiang Cheng.
"Clan leaders." You bowed your head at them and Xichen gave you a warm smile.
"This is (y/n), she's our most skilled healer." He explained to the other two, who nodded in response.
"I apologize, but I have to goo back to my practice. Jin Ling got hurt." You said, the last part a bit more to Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng didn't seem to react at first, but it seemed to hit him afterwards at what you said.
"Jin Ling got hurt?" "Yes, I don't remember the whole story though. Something happened with a sword and a cliff, I couldn't follow well." You explained before quickly bowing and running off.
You entered your practice again, staring at the boys who were eating snacks.
"You stole my food stock..." You mumbled and Jingyi smiled happily.
"You're lucky I like you guys." You commented to which they all smiled brightly (except for Jin Ling, who was still in pain of course). You stepped closer to Jin Ling and crouched in front of him as you started to inspect and treat the wound quickly.
"Will it scar?" Jingyi asked and you nodded shortly as you continued to wrap the bandage around his arm.
"Definitely. You should start making up a story to tell to others." You joked as you looked up to Jin Ling.
"Battled a giant demon dog!" Jingyi shouts and you can't help but laugh.
"Those don't walk around anymore, a-Yi." "But it'd be awesome!" He commented again before taking a bite of his (your) food. You rolled your eyes as you finished up the bandaging before getting up.
"How about a wolf instead?" You commented as you started to wash your hands in the bowl of water while listening to Jingyi whine. You could hear Jin Ling cuss at Jingyi while Zizhen just laughed and you saw Sizhui shake his head with a smile.
"Don't come back here too often." You said with a smile as you put everything away again.
"Now, out." You said with a smile, pointing at the door. They all quickly ran out, Jingyi managing to grab some food before leaving.
Despite that, they somehow managed to land in your practice every week. It was mostly Jin Ling who got hurt and you learned that Jin Ling was extremely unlucky and unhandy. A combination that usually doesn't go well. You spend way more time with the junior quartet, because they also came by just to hide from lessons or just to get some snacks (which you now bought double from what you usually bought).
Having Jin Ling in your practice constantly also meant that Jiang Cheng came over more often, usually to bring Jin Ling home/to his room since Jin Ling always fell asleep at the practice. Sometimes, he stayed a bit longer and you got to talk to him a bit more.
You then, of course, started to develop a crush on the man.
You were sure that it was obvious, the snickering of Jingyi said enough. Even Sizhui couldn't help but smile every time Jingyi was snickering while Zizhen tried to make them quiet down.
But of course, the visits didn't stop. Jin Ling was back again every week, joined by his friends of course. But this week was the worst.
Jin Ling was laying on the bed, leg propped up as you tried to stop the bleeding while trying to talk to Sizhui about what had happened.
"We were practicing and the sword broke." Sizhui explained and you turned your head while holding pressure on the leg.
"You got a sword in his leg?" You asked and Sizhui nodded before you turned back to Jin Ling.
"Ever heard of practice sword? You know, the wooden one." You said and he looked away in shame, not answering the sarcastic remark. You started to remove the pressure before getting a needle.
"Sizhui, go get his uncle." You said as you started to stitch the wound, after putting a cloth in Jin Ling's mouth so he wouldn't break his teeth. It took awhile and Jin Ling had passed out from the pain earlier, you couldn't blame the poor boy. Jiang Cheng arrived just as you finished the stitching, eyes cast on the cut as well as all the blood on your hands.
"Good, you're here." You said as you got up, cleaning your hands once more in the basin of water, which had already turned red. Once your hands were clean, you took bandages from the table and started to wrap it around his leg.
"He won't be able to walk for awhile, so please make sure he doesn't. I know how stubborn your family can get. He'll also need to take certain medicines every 2 hours or so for 3 to 4 days." You said before glancing at Jiang Cheng, who was still staring at his nephew and you could spot worry in his eyes.
"He's fine, don't worry too much. You're free to stay until he wakes up." You got up again when you finished wrapping Jin Ling's leg and Jiang Cheng sat down near the bed, eyes now cast towards the broken sword pieces that you had pulled out of the wound.
"What happened?" "The sword broke and hit his leg. These boys don't seem to know the consequences of practicing with actual swords." You replied with a chuckle as you grabbed some tea, offering a cup to Jiang Cheng who gratefully accepted it.
"Is getting hurt also something that runs in your family?" You asked and he looked up, shrugging softly.
"I mean, you got hurt pretty often as well. My teacher healed you quite often." You joked and you could see the wheels turning in his head before it seemed to click.
"You were that girl always watching from the side?" He asked and you nodded, smiling brightly at the thought that he remembered you. You continued to talk and for the first time, he actually tried to hold up the conversation as well.
From then on, everything seemed to take a turn.
Jiang Cheng would greet you if he saw you and sometimes he would converse in conversation , but those conversations weren't very long most of the time. Sometimes his friends (especially Huaisang and Wuxian) were with him and they often gave you a smile, but you could see the twinkle in their eyes. Sometimes the other leaders were with him, Xichen and Guangyao often gave you a sweet smiles, and you couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy every time. Even their smile seemed to hide a certain mischief. You were well aware that they all knew by now, after all Wangji's blunt comments about 'you staring at Jiang Cheng like a puppy in love' (and Wuxian and Huaisang's snickering after said comment) usually did the trick.
Now, they would always approach you while dragging Jiang Cheng behind them. They would start a conversation, trying to get Jiang Cheng to join the conversation at all cost while trying to not make it obvious (and failing miserably in your opinion). Jiang Cheng didn't seem to notice however and just curtly answered the questions thrown his way. He didn't seem particularly happy when he was near you, frown permanently shown on his face as he stood near you as he waited to leave the conversation. It was something you were quite annoyed by. Not because of him, but rather the fact that he was forced to meet you by his friends. So you asked them to stop and they did, much to their annoyance.
But you did see him a few more times again, mostly for Jin Ling's checkups. He'd just sit in the corner, staring as you cleaned his nephew's wound.
"A-jiě?" Jin Ling spoke in a whisper and you glanced up to him, giving him a small nod.
"What is it?" You whispered back and he glanced at his uncle before getting a bit closer to you.
"Uncle is staring at you..." "Don't be ridiculous A-Ling." You said, flicking his forehead softly with a disapproving chuckle before continuing to clean his wound. The boy couldn't help but smile a bit, something you couldn't help but smile in return to. Seeing the boy smile was still something new and it didn't happen that often, so you were always happy when you did see him smile.
"I'm sure about it, a-jiě. He has that look in his eyes." Jin Ling said and you looked up again, hands freezing in place before you took a glance at Jiang Cheng as well. His gaze was focused to the two of you, but you suddenly did notice his eyes shifting to you every few seconds as they lingered on your form.
"Well, a-Ling. You might be right for once." You commented, a small smirk appearing on your face to which Jin Ling smiled again.
When you finished cleaning and rebandaging Jin Ling's leg, you asked Jiang Cheng to wait for a second while Jin Ling limped out.
"You know, Jin Ling told me something." You said and he looked at you in confusion, waiting for you to continue.
"He said you were staring at me. I don't think so.... Unless you were?" You teased, eyes moving to his figure and smiling slightly when you noticed how his ears had turned red slightly as he stared in front of him.
"I'll see you later, I have to collect some stuff." You said before walking off, leaving the man standing in front of your practice.
You didn't see him for a few days after that and you couldn't help but feel a bit weird about it. Nonetheless, you continued with your routines. Taking care of some of the younger disciplines, clean your practice and getting ready to have your practice raided by the junior quartet. The food that you had gotten was gone by the end, most of it by Jingyi, and that was even after you bought extra.
"I just went to the market and you already ate all of it?" You asked as you looked in the cabinet and Jingyi gave a cheeky smile as he ate the last candy, happily eating it.
"A-jiě, when are you and clan leader Jiang getting together?" He then asked, receiving a shove from Jin Ling before looking at Sizhui for help as he tried to block Jin Ling's attacks.
"A-Ling!" The boys paused and you sighed.
"If you're going to hit him, do it where no one sees." You commented and you saw betrayal flash in Jingyi's eyes while Jin Ling just smirked before he started pocking the elder in the ribs. You just shook your head at the two before continuing your stitching on Jin Ling's robe. Then you could suddenly hear shouting and frowned, laying down your work and peaking your head out of the door. You could see Wuxian walking around, Jiang Cheng hot on his heels with an annoyed look. You were then pulled back by Jin Ling.
"Don't tell them we're here..." He begged and you looked at them, all a bit afraid of the consequences of sneaking out, and you scoffed with a smile before nodding and walking out of the practice.
"What's wrong with you two?" You asked as you looked at both men, but only Wuxian stared your way.
"Have you seen Sizhui? Or the others?" He asked and you could hear he was quite concerned.
"Why, what happened?" You returned and Jiang Cheng stepped forward.
"Some disciplines say that they saw them being dragged off and Wuxian is paranoid." He said, receiving a glare from the other (which Jiang Cheng gladly returned).
"I'm sure they're fine, a-Xian." You said and he huffed.
"You two should get married, makes bullying me much easier." He grumbled and you rolled your eyes with a laugh while Jiang Cheng just rolled his eyes.
"Very funny. You're just not thinking rationally. We both just acknowledge that." Jiang Cheng said and Wuxian just huffed again.
"You two fit each other." And then he just walked off, leaving you and Jiang Cheng alone. You looked at him and found him already looking your way, ears red once more.
"Don't be too hard on him, he's just worried." You said and Jiang Cheng nodded shortly.
"Are you not?" "Jin Ling can defend himself, he'll be fine." He answered curtly and you flicked his head harshly, making the man flinch before looking at you in shock.
"That's your nephew, at least act like you care." You commented angrily before walking back to your practice, seeing 4 pair of eyes stare at you intently.
"What?" You asked and Jin Ling spoke up first.
"You and uncle sound like a married couple..." He said and you felt your face heat up at the comment. But then you saw the terror in their eyes and turned your head, Jiang Cheng standing in the doorway with a stoic expression.
"We'll be on our way then..." Sizhui commented before dragging the other 3 with him and past Jiang Cheng quickly before they all broke into a sprint.
"Bye, auntie." Jin Ling shouted and you saw Jiang Cheng frown as he watched his nephew run out with a smile before he turned back to you.
"You lied about seeing them." "I never said whether I saw them or not nor did anyone give me the chance to say it." You said as you sat down, grabbing Jin Ling's robe up again.
"Is that Jin Ling's?" "Yes, it is. He tripped again and it ripped, so I'm stitching it. You should buy him some new clothes, some have over 20 stitch-spots. I'm losing all my thread on these, I'm tempted to use a different color to make it noticeable." You joked and Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes again, grumbling something under his breath.
"What are you grumbling about? Asking yourself how you'd fallen for me?" You teased, watching his ears turn red again and you smiled again while looking back at the stitching. You looked up when he stayed quiet, seeing that the blush had reached his face and you frowned.
"You alright there?" You asked and he snapped out his trance and nodded coldly before he turned to leave.
"You're leaving?" You asked and he turned his head around to face you. "I mean, it's pretty boring here and you chased my previous company away before I could finish..." You said and you saw him sigh again before he sat on a chair a bit further from you. Even with his annoyed expression, you couldn't help but smile that he took your joke serious enough to stay. You continued your work, glancing at him ever so often as you tried to talk to him (not to much avail). You stopped, however, when you noticed that his eyes were closed and his head was falling down ever so often before he straightened himself up. You smiled and stood up, walking his way and crouching down before gently poking his shoulder. He woke up in and instant and you flinched with his sudden movement, surprised at how close his face was to yours now.
"You should go to your room to sleep, otherwise your neck will hurt." You said as you stood up again, pulling him up with you. It was clear that he was still somewhat sleepy, eyes almost threatening to fall shut again.
"Come one, get out." You laughed and he finally looked awake at the statement, blinking a few times before looking at you.
"I apologize-" "Ah, stop it. I invited you in, no need to be so formal." You interrupted him, which startled him slightly before he simply shut his mouth.
"Feel free to drop by again." You said and he nodded, but you stopped him just before he left.
"And I don't mean with Jin Ling."

Let death be kinder than man
Title and final sentence from this poem
It was a few weeks into his stay at Lotus Pier that Wei Wuxian discovered a large, water spider resting into a dark corner of his new room. It had a large, lanky body, as if made up of long threads of black silk, thin legs holding up a disproportionately small body. It appeared giant to Wei Wuxian’s frightened eyes, a terrible monster that would feast upon him much like the dogs that he had grown to fear.
The otherwise harmless insect had most likely snuck inside the room in search for warmth during the chilly spring evening, scurrying through the open window at dawn, when the air reminded of the icy middle of winter rather than the lukewarm evenings of late March.
Frozen in his spot by the door, Wei Wuxian did not know what to do, afraid the creature might run off to hide somewhere he could not see it – or worse, attack him. He had heard of poisonous spiders, of the pain that consumed their victims, and he could only be afraid of this fate befalling him as well. So, with wide, tearful eyes fixated onto the odd creature, his little shaking body struggled to come up with a solution.
“It’s just as scared of you as you are of it, if not more so.” Jiang Yanli had said, calmly, as she trapped the little creature between an upturned cup and a piece of paper. She had come to see whether Wei Wuxian had gone to bed – his nightmares had kept him from sleeping lately – and she came across the scene of the resting spider and the frightened boy staring at it from the opposite end of the room, so she immediately intervened, without disgust or fear.
“These spiders are harmless.” She further explained as she opened the window again, “It did nothing wrong and did not hurt you, in fact it must have been terrified as well.”
As she lifted the cup off the spider, the creature scurried down the windowsill and into the night, unharmed. Jiang Yanli closed the window again, and leaned down to pat at Wei Wuxian’s head, his eyes still wide – not with fear, but rather surprise and admiration. His shijie had not been afraid of the spider, in fact she had not even killed it!
“It is not a sin to seek warmth and safety.” She said, her voice warm, “So why should we kill something just because it lives in a way we don’t understand? It is not a sin to be alive.”
--
For all he bragged about it, Wei Wuxian had never killed anything – not with his hands, not up close. Surely, it was amusing to watch Lan Zhan fluster over the idea of roasting the bunnies he had painstakingly hunted for him in the back mountains of the Cloud Recesses, but in truth, he could never find it within himself to do such a thing. He could hunt pheasants all day long, but that was different – shooting an arrow from a distance made the kill seem less impactful. By the time he picked up the game, it was already dead.
But the mere thought of having to kill a living thing with his hands, drive a knife into soft tissue and hold onto a quivering body – it terrified Wei Wuxian in a way that he could not even fathom the thought. It was why he had never joined uncle Jiang in his hunts in the deep forests of Yunmeng, a task that Jiang Cheng seemed to enjoy alongside his father.
Jiang Cheng had not appeared bothered at all by the sacrifice, finding Wei Wuxian’s reluctamce rather ridiculous.
“There is an order to things.” He had said one day as he returned from a hunting party with his father, proudly displaying a large deer, “Some are hunters, and some are the hunted.”
Wei Wuxian stared at the lifeless carcass, eyes wide with fear and still wet with tears and blood. Its throat had been slit, as the arrows had only served to incapacitate it. A humane kill – or so they believed it to be.
“Who gets to decide who’s the prey and who is the hunter?” He asked, voice distant as he stared into the dead animal’s eyes, as if seeking to understand, to apologize.
“Isn’t it obvious?” Jiang Cheng snapped, “Some things live just to die.”
The servants took the deer to be skinned and cooked, a large feast afoot that evening. Wei Wuxian stared at it until it disappeared from his sight.
“Why are you so attached to a deer? You won’t care when you eat it.” Jiang Cheng tried again, somewhat comforting. The hand he placed on Wei Wuxian’s shoulder was meant to reassure him, but it did little more than remind him he was alive while the deer was not. What made him different than it? Had it not been him running for his life in the streets of Yiling years ago, hunted for food as well? Helpless prey?
“Don’t let shijie see it.”
--
“Why did you save us?” Wen Qing asked one evening as she tended to old, festering wounds on Wei Wuxian’s body, faint candlelight and shoddy supplies as her only guides in the vast cave. “Was it only your debt to Wen Ning and I?”
“No.” came the quiet, but confident reply. “It was not fair for you all to suffer. I would have saved you anyway.”
Shadows danced on the cave walls, but Wei Wuxian knew they weren’t just shadows, the formless dance of resentment equal parts mocking and enticing, whispering contradicting promises of comfort and revenge all the same. They wound more and more violently, enveloping the rocks in a thick, black mist.
“Why risk so much for a bunch of strangers bearing the name of your sect’s murderers?”
Wei Wuxian’s eyes flickered red and the shadows on the wall returned to the cracks in the rock, writhing with anger upon being restrained.
“It is not a sin to be alive.”
--
He had a nightmare, the night before it happened. A premonition. He had dreamt himself the deer Jiang Cheng caught in the forest near Lotus Pier, running for his life from a death that kept closing in no matter how desperately he tried to flee.
He had awoken with a racing heart and a bloodied hand that should not have been cut – and so, he rushed in the middle of the night to save the only one in the camp that had a chance to run away from the slaughter, the only one that did not deserve to become prey to hunters that sought blood for no reason other than a false pretense of righteousness.
A-Yuan had slept through it, through Wei Wuxian’s sprint through the Burial Mounds, alive with hatred and bloodthirst under the full moon, and hid him, wrapping his body in a robe he knew was too torn up to keep any warmth.
Prey always hides its young.
--
As he stares up at the breaking dawn, feeling himself slowly succumb to an unforgiving fate, Wei Wuxian cannot help but think over his life. Over the many spiders he had not killed, freeing them in the grass instead, the rabbits he had set free from hunting traps, the children he had defended from bullies, the Wen remnants he had saved only for them to be slaughtered anyway.
It is with kindness that he had treated the rest of the world – and he had perhaps expected that kindness to win him over at least some mercy, if not the same kindness in return. But now, as far as his eyes can see, there has not been a single ounce of either of those things granted to him.
And perhaps he wonders if it had been worth it – to be so good and loving to a world that had been so eager to contribute to his demise.
But as he feels his body dissolve into resentment, he cannot find it in himself to regret it.
He thinks of the deer, of the spider, of A-Yuan.
If I am killed for simply living…

MDZS fanfic ideas I have that most likely won't go anywhere and are mainly just titles atp
@fandom-trash-goblin ‼️
Wish You Were Sober (Chengxian but not necessarily outright)
Post Sunshot when Wei Wuxian is going out drinking everyday
Jiang Cheng being pissed about that (rightfully so, Jesus Christ)
They still love each other but it's hard when you're a sect leader and your SiC is dodging his responsibility's and by extension YOU
Jiang Cheng feels
Jiang Fengmian bashing
idk really I just felt like sharing
Modern AU Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling road trip
The end of the Summer holidays
And they have to get from Yunmeng to Lanling but Jin Ling's flight has been cancelled so Jiang Cheng has to drive him there
All types of shenanigans, for example:
Car breaks down
There's a storm so they have to stop for the night in this shifty ass motel
Jin Ling's awful (in Jiang Cheng's opinion) music
Jiang Cheng's awful (in Jin Ling's opinion) music
There isn't really anything dramatic or overly emotional about this
Just a bit of a laugh
Jiang Fengmian bashing (idk how but I will fucking get it in there idc)
Zhao Zhuliu/Wen Zhuliu is actually Jiang Cheng's real father AU (thank the Lord he looks like his mother)
Major Jiang Fengmian bashing obvs <3
pretty ooc except for Wen Zhuliu who doesn't really have a personality to mischaracterise
Wen Zhuliu being a bit #suspicious when Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian pull up for the Wen indoctrination
Just cause. how can anyone Like That be Jiang Fengmian's son??????
Anyways they're in the cave and Wen Zhuliu refuses to fight Jiang Cheng because by then he's worked out that the boy's birthday is like... suspiciously 9 months away from the last time he and Yu Ziyuan were last Together™
And bby is just like nope
not doing that today
Anyways burning of Lotus Pier and it all goes down the same
EXCEPT
Wen Zhuliu doesn't have anything to do with the death of Yu Ziyuan (if anything he's holding them all back)
Instead of taking his core, Wen Zhuliu takes that child out of Lotus Pier and straight to Wen Qing and renounces the Wen name, going back to Zhao Zhuliu (independent King, we love to see it)
Basically pledges pledges allegiance to Jiang Cheng and kinda follows him around like a guard dog for the entirety of Sunshot
OR
Wen Zhuliu doesn't make the connection of Jiang Cheng potentially being his son until he's got his hand in his chest and is melting Jiang Cheng's golden core
In this AU there'll be some weird thing where you have parts of your parents in your core I don't really wanna explain it
"Jiang Cheng’s golden core was strong for a seventeen year old and was filled with unbridled potential that only the son of the Violet Spider could hold or hope to live up to"
"It spills all over his fingers then onto the floor and he lets it, staring transfixed as his son’s livelihood falls through his fingers"
Basically, Wen Zhuliu gives up his core for Jiang Cheng via Wen Qing and surgery instead of Wei Wuxian and everything else plays out the same minus the demonic cultivation
Jiang Cheng still kills Wen Zhuliu however when he searches his robes he finds a letter addressed "Jiang Wanyin"
Edge of Seventeen (Jiang Cheng Sect Leader succession during Sunshot, potentially Zhancheng 👀)
Pretty much just a character study of Jiang Cheng
Set during the 3-6 months that Wei Wuxian was in the burial mounds
Lan Wangji being there when Wei Wuxian wasn't...
Not a fully fledged idea yet
Jiang Fengmian bashing <3
