Does anyone have good resources for ASL? Not looking to become fluent, just some basic signs to communicate with someone.
I’m asking because I’ve heard there’s a lot of misinformation on YouTube and whatnot about sign language.

Brb googling how fluent I have to get in ASL to become a Broadway interpreter because I AM learning ASL and how fucking cool would it be to make theatre more accessible???
Yes this post is because HTDIO is getting ASL interpreters for select performances but NO I didn’t start learning ASL because of that, I started learning because of a Scream (2022) fic thank you very much (shout out to that person on AO3 who inspired me to learn a whole new language because of sapphics????)

I had a super wholesome moment today. So I have been learning sign language since it’s good to know and in case I ever need it, and one of my friends has relatives who are deaf so they know a bit of ASL. So I recently learned how to say colors and showed them and we went over the alphabet, but some of our other friends walked over and we showed them and they showed us some they knew! I left today knowing the ASL alphabet and color names and came back knowing those plus “thank you”, “please”, “more”, “stand”, “sit”, “no”, “stop”, “what”, “I Love You”, “friends”, “family”, and a few swears :)

learning a new language in under a year
The efficient acquisition of a new language within a year demands dedication, strategy, and unwavering practice. This essay serves as a roadmap to navigate this linguistic journey, offering insights and practical tips to maximize language acquisition.
To commence, one must set clear and tangible goals. Defining the purpose behind learning a language and envisioning the desired level of proficiency serve as powerful motivators throughout the process.
Immersion is crucial for language acquisition. By immersing oneself in the language environment through various mediums like movies, music, literature, and interactions with native speakers, one can grasp the intricacies and nuances of the language profoundly.
Structured learning provides a solid framework for progress. Employing diverse resources such as textbooks, online courses, and language learning apps ensures comprehensive coverage of grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Consistent practice is essential for language mastery. Devoting daily time to engage with the language through conversational practice, vocabulary drills, and writing exercises facilitates steady progress and retention.
Utilizing spaced repetition systems like Anki or Memrise optimizes the memorization of vocabulary and grammar rules, enhancing long-term retention and fluency.
Seeking feedback from native speakers or language tutors is invaluable. Regular practice sessions enable learners to identify areas for improvement and refine their language skills effectively.
Maintaining motivation is crucial. Celebrating small victories, tracking progress, and reflecting on the benefits of language proficiency serve as constant reminders of the end goal.
Mastering a new language within a year requires a holistic approach encompassing goal-setting, immersion, structured learning, regular practice, feedback-seeking, and unwavering motivation. By adhering to these principles diligently and adapting strategies based on individual progress and preferences, language acquisition becomes an achievable feat.

My mom sent me a tiktok about it, so I wanted to share! If anyone else has been wanting to learn ASL like I have but have been coming up short on resources, the Oklahoma School for the Deaf is offering ASL 1 and ASL 2 courses online for free right now!

i'm learning ASL!
well, hopefully
we've been wanting to for a while (for several reasons), and i was bored and motivated, so i've started the process!
(word count below cut: 183)
there's a lot of individuals in the system this will help- one of our littles is completely nonspeaking, another little understands english, but only speaks and writes in spanish and ASL (for some reason, we know this because we know very very minimal sign), we have a couple adults/older teens who are also fully nonspeaking, and many of us just experience fatigue and burnout that makes verbality harder sometimes
also- i made a new D&D character earlier who is nonspeaking, and they canonically communicate through ASL, so i'm working on learning so i can play the character better!
overall yeah, ASL go brrrr! my current strategy is i'm learning the signs off websites (cross-referencing them) and writing them down on notecards with a very brief description/reminder so i can practise later. i chose some words/phrases that i think will be helpful for most of us in the situations we'd be using them;
overwhelmed, anxious, excited, loud, a little bit, hurt/pain, a lot, talk, switch, again/do-over-/repeat
i'm HOPING that i can maybe push some activity into this blog again by putting updates on it, we'll see!
so yeah that's your I Can't Sleep update for tonight

Rhymes not working in other languages is truly a tragedy
But at the same time, it means new rhyming possibilities when I'm speaking another language
So mixed feelings
Also is this just a me thing or are signs that are really similar the equivalent of rhyming in sign language? Just the same vibes to me

Sign users, do people with arthritis or curled fingers come across as though they're mumbling? My mom lost her hearing aids, and I'm about ready to just take up sign (and teach her), but our fingers aren't in great shape.
Thanks so much!
(PS, she was literally dying at the time she took them out--critical arrhythmia AND pneumonia--so it's reasonable she would put them somewhere bizarre. She's MUCH better now.)
