i wanted to make a journal-themed entry for the victory curse, since i have smajor brainrot all of the time and i felt like it was a somewhat missed opportunity for angst :]
plus it's a cool concept, if people like it i might do the canary curse and a few others!
(shoutout to my brother for doing the 'laurel' and then proceeding to fail every other word he tried-)
text under cut because i was going for style, not legibility :P
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The "Victory" Curse
Top: Cursebearer and allies are predisposed to victory in the Life games; often results in repetitive loss of allies or partners, as well as those who See attempting to take advantage of the cursebearer. Strong-willed and fiercely loyal, even to the death.
Note: Curse is warded off but not cancelled by Canary curse; effects unknown. Range is possibly extended?
Side: Resists Boogey curse!
Photo: Current recipient is aware; has become sacrificial and borderline su*cidal.
one time i saw someone say that laurel and oliver from arrow were a bad couple because they were in an emotionally abusive relationship and i was like yeah no shit but then they went on to say that laurel was the abuser and oliver was the victim.
and honestly i haven’t had hope for humanity since that very moment.
potential muse combiations!
i think uri and dee should be co-conspirators. dee is burdened by the omens, urianger is a professional omen-giver. prophecied destruction curser and doomsday enthusiast healer. its not that he wants to see doomsday he just likes collecting prophecies of doom and seeking to mitigate them. also they can cause problems on purpose. accomplice (friendly). this is both for fantasy au and for fate au. fate au uri also thinks cu is compelling just because he likes the idea of being bound to a star (missed the point, uri, but hes still staring at cu in contemplation)
(fate au urianger is an atlas mage, specializes in methods of reading the future. fantasy au urianger is a wandering sorcerer whos ostensibly connected with a few royal families but mostly just Appears In Places.) fantasy dee and urianger should meet because i dont know i said so. girl learn magic from local weirdo who knows too many spells outlawed by the wizard convention.
fantasy laurel (beastkin basically, a wandering warrior) would meet cu and demand a spar DFSGSRBGS because she operates by shonen anime protag rules of if someone looks neat we should fight to become friends LOL they could get into weird adventures together as friends after she demands trial by combat...
i think pat and gaius would get along. they are both very tired ex soldiers who used to have notable political power. and are now stuck in limbo of 'boy howdy i sure would prefer if things were less they way they currently are', except gaius's method is now he's a hunter who kills malicious spirits and the like. but anyways they could be people who Commiserate bc hey what the fuck how are u me but with a 20yr age difference. war is hell
I have this thing about why the fae can’t lie, but it’s not nearly as interesting or fleshed out. and it’s only good for SF fae. okay: their gift of languages is actually an adaptable AI that translates for them. but it assumes good faith communication and therefore corrects all lies on both sides. it’s just good at correcting fae lies and bad at correcting human lies, and that’s why the fae are so annoyed when humans lie. because they don’t always notice and often when they do it’s because it turned into complete gibberish. it’s also why the fae appear not to understand or be able to utilize sarcasm. everything else is just cultural misunderstandings.
A Collection of Greek Keywords for Hellenic Pagans (kharis, miasma, etc.)
Kharis:
Kharis means 'grace' or 'favour' and it is in reference to the reciprocal nature of our relationships with the gods.
Liddell and Scott describe it as, "A grace or favour felt on the part of the doer but more frequently on the part of the receiver in the form or thankfulness and gratitude."
It essentially means a favour done in delight. This can be both the offering we give to the gods, and the favours and blessings the gods bestow upon us.
Kharis is both the action of offering and worshipping and also what is built between a worshipper and a god through the actions of offering and reverence. It can be used like this:
'Giving an offering to the gods is an example of kharis.'
Or:
'I have built up kharis with Apollo over the years.'
Khaire/khairete:
Khaire or khairete are words that mean 'hail', 'farewell', or 'blessings'.
It can be used to greet someone, either as hello or farewell (I use it at the end of some of my posts). It can also be used at the end of a prayer.
Khaire is used to address one person or god, and khairete is used to address a group.
Miasma:
Miasma means 'stain', 'pollution', 'defilement', or 'stain of guilt'.
It is a type of spiritual pollution that a person or a place can collect through either happenstance or deliberate action. It makes us spiritually unclean but there is no damnation involved in miasma and thus is not similar to sin. Sin is more comparable to agos, which is mentioned later.
We tend to collect miasma while going about day-to-day life, almost like getting our hands dirty while working. The stain it refers to is always one of a spiritual nature; miasma is a strictly spiritual concept.
It makes a person or place ritually impure, hence it is inappropriate to interact with the divine while in a miasmic state. The gods are said to reject the offerings of a miasmic person or to vacate a miasmic place until it is cleansed.
Human blood is also considered to be miasmic when spilled outside of battle, though this is not the case for menstrual blood (although I tend to avoid praying and doing rituals during that week anyway as I consider it to not be my cleanest state possible. I use this time to tend to my altar physically instead, cleaning it and reorganizing it).
Miasma is very common, everyone gets it, mostly due to plain daily life, though sometimes due to deliberate actions. Miasma can always be cleansed.
Sources of miasma include:
Death in the home - Pollutes the grieving and the home. People and home need to be cleansed before interacting with the gods or going to temple.
Birth - Because of the blood involved. Mother and baby are considered by traditional standards to be miasmic for three days postpartum and both are generally cleansed at five days postpartum.
Intercourse - Both parties are polluted by the act and must be cleansed before interacting with the gods or going to temple.
M*rder/m*nsl*ughter - This collects both miasma and agos. The m*rderer becomes miasmic, and a place can become miasmic if a m*rderer is free and unpunished there. This does not apply to blood spilled in battle.
There is a line in Hesiod's Works and Days that refers to the action of cleansing oneself of miasma before interacting with the gods. It reads, "Never pour a libation of sparkling wine to Zeus after dawn with unwashen hands, nor to others of the deathless gods."
Khernips:
Khernips means 'handwash', or 'lustral water'.
It is basically Hellenic holy water. It is used to purify ourselves of miasma before interacting with the gods.
It can be made by dropping burnt herbs or laurel leaves (bay leaves) in clean water, or by dropping a lit match in clean water. Simply washing our hands in plain water can work symbolically as well if done with the specific intention of purifying oneself.
Agos:
Agos means 'curse', 'pollution', or 'abomination'.
It can be considered as a step up to miasma and, while not quite the same, it could also be considered comparable to sin. It is brought about through deliberate actions and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to cleanse. Agos can also invoke the divine wrath of the gods, so it does involve a form of damnation
Some things that cause/invoke agos include:
Having intercourse inside a temple
Temple robbing
M*rder
Bloodshed inside a temple or on sacred grounds
Broken xenia
The refusal to properly bury a family member or a soldier (even an enemy soldier)
K*lling someone who is under the gods' protection
Offering human blood to the gods (due to its miasmic nature)
Agos is hardly as common as miasma, so it is not something the general practitioner should worry about.
Magic's been restricted in Hawkins for decades. Not by any law, or enforcement of the city guard, but by the fearful nature of man. Rumours of curses and spells, fear of the unknown - it has people scared.
And scared people lash out.
So people stopped doing magic in Hawkins. People stopped doing magic visibly, in Hawkins. They keep it behind closed doors, locked up tight.
Eddie dabbles in it. Small things. Good luck charms, cleaning spells, minor wards to keep the rain from leaking through the thatched roof of his and Wayne's hut. Nothing big, just some things he got passed down from his uncle, from his family way down south. He's thought about more, seeing how far his magic can extend - but he's not the witch, the demon that people think he is.
He doubts that the townsfolk have anything to base their suspicions on. They just don't like him or the Munson name. Him and Wayne are the ones who get the blame, but he knows there's powerful players in Hawkins. Powerful magic that's been at work a long, long time.
Eddie might not be the best mage, the best witch, but he's always been good at feeling magic.
And there's a small courtyard on the outskirts of town that reeks of magic. The strong shit too, been there for a very long time, put down by very powerful people.
Other people don't notice, it's a good courting spot - or so people say. Large trees, bushes covered in flowers, a nice cobbled path, with a large fountain in the middle. It's picturesque, romantic. And atop the fountain, is a statue.
A statue of a boy, or a young man, or however you want to put it. He's handsome, devastatingly so, with a square jaw and muscled arms. A wreath of laurels resting atop his perfectly swooped hair, and an elegant toga like robe draped across his body.
He's posed delicately, but in a way that does not hide his masculinity.
The garden always perfectly kept, always tidy, never any vermin, and no one is ever seen maintaining it. The statue never cracks, never fades, never dirties. He is always perfectly encapsulated in marble. Shining white.
Eddie is a little bit obsessed. There's not a lot to do in Hawkins, and the magic in the courtyard is alluring. It's tricky, encircled and entwined into itself - into the world around it. It's a puzzle, and Eddie wants to figure it out.
So he goes to the courtyard when he knows no one else will be there, and he makes sure to bring a notebook. Write down what he sees, what he feels.
He can feel the sun on his shoulders, the breeze gently ruffling his hair, the birds singing in the trees. Bees flitting from flower to flower, there's a stream trickling somewhere near.
The statue shines in the middle, drawing the eye.
It's perfect. Almost too perfect. Designed by man, and not by nature, perfect.
So Eddie pulls off his boots, rolls up his trousers, and wades into the fountain. Standing on the wishing coins people have tossed in. But he ignores them, of course, and heads to the statue. The more he concentrates, the closer he gets, the more he can tell that this, him, is the centre of all the magic.
The perfect statue.
Eddie can see the nailbeds in his fingers, the moles that dot his skin, the pores on his face, the lashes on his eyes. Perfect. He gets even closer, takes a deep breath, and focuses his magic. The more he looks, the more he listens, the more Eddie can feel the magic encircling the courtyard.
He swears he can hear a heart beating inside the statue's chest.
