Finals were approaching faster than Tony wanted to think about which meant that he was struggling more than he'd ever done. Finals in secondary had been easy, the same every year where he either let himself pass with flying colors or held himself back to be more 'believable' to his teachers. Whatever narrative that he had given himself in whatever year he'd been dragging himself through.
University was different. These finals mattered and Tony didn't have all of the answers to lean on. He'd been learning some of the skills needed for studying, his grades were okay but not great in his classes that weren't musically inclined, but there was still a lot to learn.
"I'm gonna drop out," Tony announced to the room at large as he flipped over his maths textbook off the coffee table and onto the floor. "Drop out, start a band, and busk in the park. Your book deals better start rolling in because you're gonna be the one supporting our future!"
Frito got stirred up by the noise, barking in what Tony had to assume was a scolding to her father. "You stay out of this.."

Tony tapped against the table in the library as he studied for his finals. He had been trying to come up with a strong drum line for his song but nothing felt right for such a heartfelt project. He'd been working on it for years, yes, but that had always been focused on melody, harmony, and lyrics. The actual drums part had never crossed his mind until recently but he figured it would add a lot of depth to the piece.
He was supposed to be studying for maths, though, so maybe this was not the best time for him to be doing this. Nor might this be the place for drumming repeatedly, he wondered as he saw someone standing near his table.
"Sorry," he apologized with a sheepish look. "Got a song stuck in my head or, well, forming there I guess."

Things were awkward, always were after a Town Dream in Tony's opinion, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to take advantage of it. He poured them three shots and Nick's beer, tossing Lucky a look like 'Don't worry about it!' in hopes that he wouldn't then report this immediately back to Jess. She probably wouldn't really care but he had to be safe.
"Hope you're not expecting me to call you that," Tony said with a grimace before tapping his glass against the bar and downing his shot. "Didn't in the dream either so it would be wildly out of character." Even to Avery Nick and Isaac had been either their names or a very clear indication that they were Avery's parents even if it had felt different.
"Now Mitte, I'm hoping that you're not gonna ditch us so soon! The night is young!" And Tony wondered if he could get away with calling it an early night for his shift. Future problems! Now he was engrossed in this fascinating meetup.

Tony wasn't a bartender but he knew enough to help them out when needed at the Court of Miracles. His section was well taken care of and technically he was on his legally mandated twenty minute break but he found most of the activities of the Court to be more fun than work. He had especially thought so back when his "job" for the Court was much less than above board. This often led him to hang near where in the building he thought might require the most assistance like the bar or the backstage areas where the performers stayed between sets.
He spotted two people that the bartenders Reed and Lucky had yet to greet and took it upon himself to sidle up and take their orders. Or, well, it would have been a good plan if the patrons were not so recently on his mind post-Town Dream.
Shit.
"Well if this isn't a fun family reunion," Tony teased as he threw a towel over his shoulder and pulled out a server check pad and pen. "I think this constitutes.. shots? Shots sound good."

"I'm guessing that notebook is just teeming with ideas," Tony smiled. "I bet they're all much more exciting than my mum's cookbook." He loved Hattie Rydinger's recipes, of course, but they certainly weren't the level of experimental that Cass was playing with. Nor were they considered diverse. Most of them had been developed in the 1950s, after all, so you couldn't really blame her for that.
He took the glass of water thankfully, taking a drink to clear the feeling in his throat. "It's good!" He insisted, embarrassed for having this response. "But, uh, yeah maybe labeling different spice levels would be good. England isn't exactly forward with their spice like some places in the world." It had gotten better in recent years, the addition of Tiana's Place had certainly made some strides, but Tony knew others might struggle too.
Tony took another bite of the spring roll, his palate much happier within that range than with the peanuts. "I'm a very happy guinea pig still, don't worry. Just don't tell Hiro that I coughed from the peanuts, please. I don't think my pride could take it."

Tony knew that this situation could have gone a number of ways but he sighed with relief when the stranger took what he said well. He smiled politely, pretending to understand what she meant when she said 'monochromatic is everything these days.' Tony knew what monochromatic meant but he didn't know enough to know that it was trendy or whatever. His 'hipster' style prevailed despite decades of opportunities to change it.
"It's nice! Definitely flattering to your complexion," Tony said as though he understood what the hell he meant by that. He looked down at his own look. Black jeans, faded band tee, and denim jacket from the lovely Julieta. It wasn't exactly the look he would call fashionable but he hoped that this woman wouldn't think he was completely lost in his fashion knowledge.
"I'm Tony, nice to meet you. I've actually got the barista working on getting you a new drink inside if you wanna join me? Hatter's is pretty reliable and the staff are pretty understanding of stuff like that. I could also get you a pastry? You can't turn down Hatter's baking! He's the best!"

♥ 389 likes rydingtony: Happy Mother’s Day, Mum! Wish you could have met all the people I love so much now. . It's been almost 40 years since I lost you and I miss you every day. Sometimes I forget how long it's been and how different our life was when you were still with us. You would hardly recognize the town these days; there are so many new faces and businesses cropping up everywhere. Wish I could give you the tour. . You passed along to me your love of music and encouraged my dreams while trying to keep my feet on the ground still. I know that couldn't have been easy; I've been told many times how difficult I can be. I'm sorry I didn't always listen and for all the grief I put you through. You really were the best mother. . I wish you could have been here to see me finally graduate and head off to uni but you were there every year even when you didn't know what was really going on. I hope you’d be proud of the life I’ve got now, though it's definitely different than you'd have expected. . I love you, Mum. I hope wherever you are is as nice as you deserve. . #MothersDay #MissingYou

Tony smiled as he settled himself at the table. He knew Cass was nervous, of course she was with how much work she was putting into opening The Lucky Cat, but he was more than happy to offer his taste buds if it meant that she would feel more prepared. Besides, there was not a world in which Tony Rydinger (former) latchkey kid would turn down free food!
"I'll give the full honest truth, Cass, not to worry!" He promised with his hands raised. "And yeah, I've had Franny's cooking before. It's definitely something beyond what the UK is known for." One of the weirder parts of Tony's curse was missing recipes of people he no longer had connections to. Maybe he'd need to approach some of those people for their recipes if nothing else, he thought.
He eyed the plates curiously before diving first into the spring rolls. Tony wasn't a foodie by any means but he did know good food when he ate it and that was damn good. The flavors mixed well, he thought, and he tried to think of a note he could make besides 'Damn that's good!' but after a moment he swallowed with a smile. "Could use a little more crunch and a hint more salt but that's good!"
He turned to the peanuts next, crunching down on one and feeling the heat rise. Tony wasn't a baby about spice but maybe he needed to work on his tolerance a tiny bit for this cuisine. He remembered thinking the same of Franny's cooking at times. "Oh wow," he coughed around a laugh, "shit, that's spice forward.."

Tony was waiting off to the side as he waited for his Earl Grey poured over steamed milk. It was taking way too long for how simple his drink was but Riley Anderson was the one working the bar and Tony was about 99.9999999% sure that if he said something to them about how he was still waiting they would find a creative way to kill him with the milk steamer so he was just texting Ian and trying to mind his own business.
He barely paid anyone else in the room any mind, so used to this place being quite the tourist trap that he blinked blearily as someone began to make a big fuss over a spilled coffee. He would've just ignored it if he hadn't caught the Please Help Me signal from Riley who appeared to be remaking the drink already.
Where the hell is my drink?! Why am I doing you favors?! ... FINE!
"Oi, what's going on?" Tony intervened, stepping between the woman and the person she was poking. "Wow that is a cute outfit! Didn't even get any coffee on it! That's lucky!" He really hoped the stranger took this as a chance to dip but some people weren't bright.

Character Name: Anthony Rydinger Occupation: Tavern Boy Magick Status: Mundus Biography: Orphaned at a young age, Anthony Rydinger didn’t have much in the way of parentage. No schooling, no business to inherit, he resorted to begging for money (and often stealing) until he met Nick Morey. Anthony certainly didn’t appreciate the help straight away, distrusting the older man’s intentions, but when he offered up a warm(ish) bed and a job to make some money for himself he couldn’t turn it down. Now he works at the tavern, earning his keep. This is not to say that Anthony has dropped his mischievous ways. On the contrary, Anthony continues to pickpocket and schmooze people for information (although he’s told not to steal while inside the tavern to protect business). Nick’s a relatively good teacher but Anthony certainly has a lot to learn about navigating in polite society. A few years ago he met a young noble during a season. Anthony thought he might've made a connection and was sadly mistaken. He kicked himself for the mistake and dove deeper still into his cons. Someone's come back into town, however, and Anthony is starting to question his own convictions.

"You take the fun out of everything, y'know that? Isn't police work supposed to be exciting?" Tony groaned with no real frustration behind it and swiveled off of his seat once again to walk to the kitchen sink. Of course Errol wasn't asking anything ridiculous but Tony couldn't quite shake the annoying teenage energy that he'd been steeped in for so many decades.
You can take the boy out of the curse but you can't always take the curse out of the boy. Tony Rydinger would never be the same as his peers, would never know what it felt like to have a quote unquote "normal" upbringing. The trajectory of adolescence had paused for too long, the interruption settling like a lead weight in the center of the ocean. You could salvage a lot but the eroded pieces would never return.
"Blood type's AB+, mate. Lucky me, right?" He rolled his eyes. Of course he'd needed to memorize that over the years, Swynlake disasters often required hospitalization and doctors liked to know that information. "How old's this case anyway?"

Tony was trying his best to balance his groceries without dropping anything. Yeah, he probably should've driven his car to the Moon Market but he was trying to lay low on the vehicle after what he and his friends had done to Toby's desk. He also probably could have asked for Ian's help in getting some of them but where was the fun in that? He was gonna surprise Ian with a nice dinner!
That all being said Tony's best for balancing was not really good in the way of balancing and one of his lemons went bouncing from his arms onto the floor and toward a woman and a young boy with her. Who was definitely staring and definitely judging.

Tony smiled and gave a mock salute to his friends as they mounted the broom and took off. He was always impressed with Eilonwy's ability to bend light in that way (and every way, really but that was beside the point) and started off on foot toward the house.
He rubbed the sleeve cuffs of Ian's flannel, trying to get that stress emotion going so that he could also achieve the same effect but no dice. He wasn't stressed, quite the opposite. Tony didn't even feel the adrenaline rush yet but a calm calculation with an undertone of anger.
He was sure he'd get there soon but for now he'd take the slightly louder and definitely slower approach on foot. The crunch of the snow beneath his feet an irritation to his ears. That would certainly help.

Tony rolled his eyes at the small comment with the screen. "As long as you're not calling me small in person we won't have an issue, mate." He knew Ian liked to joke that he was short (he wasn't) but he could ignore and endear himself to Ian's teasing while he wasn't sure quite yet how he'd handle Angelo doing the same. Ian had a pass after all they'd been through. Angelo was too new.
"You're nervous?" Tony raised a brow. "I mean I guess that moving'll do that to ya. Uh.." He glanced around, admittedly also a bit nervous. Ian was usually a good buffer, as was the computer and physical distance between himself and his boyfriend's childhood friend. Being face-to-face and alone was.. not ideal, let's say.
"This town does that to newbies, you'll be fine in no time. Just don't start shooting embarrassing or incriminating text messages. She likes to send those out in a roguelike fashion."

Tony ignored the dry tone as he entered Errol's space. He found no insult in it, no push to get Tony out of the space, and thus he found no reason not to continue into the room. Ian had finally fallen asleep, after all, and this was one of the rare times Tony was up later than his half-elf boyfriend.
He pulled up a seat to the contraption Errol was working with and turned to the older man expectantly. "Alright, chief, how can I help?" He tapped the glass curiously, definitely out of his depth here.
