Simple and shallow, but the subversive "third way" resolutions were nice. Ultimately, there just isn't much to this.

Tumblr media
title: Midnight at the Houdini author: Delilah S. Dawson publisher: Delacorte Press release date: 5 September 2023
A girl discovers a surreal hotel where no one ever leaves. When the clock strikes midnight she’ll be trapped there forever unless she’s able to break free from magic that in turn breaks all her rules. Perfect for fans of Caraval and The Starless Sea! The night is perfect and glorious and sparkling, too beautiful to be real. Like magic. Anna may have grown up in glitzy Las Vegas, but she’s determined that no one will ever call her shallow. While her older sister Emily is the star of the family, Anna is the diligent stage manager, making sure that both their lives go perfectly to plan. But when Emily reveals a startling betrayal, Anna flees in the middle of a raging storm and takes shelter in a boutique establishment she’s never seen before: The Houdini. Inside, Anna discovers a magic hotel . . . and a magical boy. Earnest, curious Max has lived his entire life inside the Houdini. Over the course of one surreal evening, he becomes Anna’s guide to the curious building. For the first time in her life, Anna is center stage, in a place that anticipates her every desire, with a boy who only has eyes for her.  But that’s because the Houdini has no other guests. No one ever enters the Houdini . . . and no one ever leaves. When the clock strikes midnight, Anna will be trapped in the Houdini forever. If Anna’s ever going to find out who she is on her own in the real world, she’ll first have to make an impossible escape. But will she be able to do it if it means leaving Max behind?

Top 5 Reasons to Read
This is an absolutely magical read! From the setting to the descriptions to the characters, it's like reading a brand-new fairy tale, with hints of old ones (like Alice in Wonderland) hidden within.
The writing and language used are delightful, capturing your attention from the first page and never letting go.
There is an amazing, Disney-esque villainess, who has shades of everything from Maleficent to Cruella DeVille to Cinderella's stepmother, Lady Tremaine.
Anna is a girl who has spent the past 6 years planning every aspect of her life, from present to future, as well as the lives of her family, so it's a struggle to be stuck in a place where she doesn't know what's around the corner at any given moment.
Max is an adorable, perfect, sweet boy who I just wanted to hug! I loved every single second he was on the page.
Thanks so much to the publisher and author for the e-ARC of the book and to TBR and Beyond for having me on the tour!
Make sure you check out the bookstagram tour too! You can find my post here, and the full schedule is here.

Reviews:
“These declarations of self from women and queer characters fit so elegantly into the mythology Alterici uses to weave her tale, it reminds us that these narratives belonged there all along.”- The Mary Sue
“I want epics with female leads, and fortunately HEATHEN fulfills that desire in a big way, while also adding its own unique touch with themes that are as contemporary as they are timeless.”- Women Write About Comics
“One look at the cover and I knew this book was right up my alley. If you are into Norse mythology and aching for a lesbian angle, then this book is for you. If you want a love story that is more than a romance, a heroine that is truly honourable and fierce, then I urge you to pick this … up.”- The Lesbian Review
“Natasha Alterici's Heathen, has single-handedly redeemed the disaster that pop culture has been making of Norse mythology. It’s a smart, funny, feminist, queer and sex-positive take on the Viking world; one with a wide cast of diverse and endearing characters. Heathen is a must-read for comics (and mythology) lovers of all sorts and those in quest of superb queer and feminist comics in particular. RATING: 10/10”- Pop Matter

What was your inspiration for writing your graphic novel?
Heathen began with a simple Ren Faire costume design, I wanted to go as a barbarian, and the outfit I came up with wasn't far off from what Aydis wears in the book. After that I found myself drawing it again and again, and realized it was developing into a character. So the next steps were obvious; give her a horse and then write her a story.
List your favorite graphic novels or comics from when you were a child and talk about how you see them as an adult.
I never got the chance to read any comics as a kid. I was too busy obsessing over a different Eyewitness book every month and then later Mary Higgins Clark mysteries and Lurlene McDaniel romance books. I got into comics in college after my English Comp teacher assigned Maus, and from there I sought out the classics like V for Vendetta, Persepolis, and some Sandman. I've always been a seasonal kind of reader, sometimes I'm devouring everything I can, other times I almost forget books exist. Just how I'm wired I suppose.
List your favorite graphic novels this year and why you like them.
I've honestly only read one so far this year, but it was a great one! Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki and Rosemary Valero-O'Connell. It's so refreshing to read about queer characters who are neither role models nor tragedies (both are perfectly valid, just oversaturated). They're just normal kids with normal relationship problems that they have to learn to navigate. I really enjoy down-to-earth stories like that.
Talk about your favorite kind of character to write about
I love messy flawed characters, the kind who want to be better but aren't quite sure how to go about it. I also love writing flirty characters, they're hands down the most fun to write. And if a flirt happens to be messy and flawed themself, well that's the perfect combination.
Talk about your least favorite kind of character to write about
This is a difficult one, because if I were to describe the kind of character I don't like I'd inevitably be describing the kind of people I don't like  and I try to find the likable part of anyone I'm writing. Otherwise it's hard to empathize with them, and empathy is the most important part. I guess I'd say I find it hard to write about people who find joy in being cruel.
Describe your ideal writing space.
Comfy chair with a foot rest, view of the forest or a field, music playing, unlimited access to some kind of sweet treat like peach rings or twizzlers, and plants to fuss over while I run through scenes and dialog in my head.
Describe your ideal home library.
I'd love to have floor to ceiling shelves, with one of those rolling ladders. Everything is organized by Library of Congress call number system (I worked as a university librarian for a while), and it's dust and mold free somehow. And there's a big pile of cushions and pillows to lay in to read.
What are some of your favorite video games?
I'm really into Ark: Survival Evolved right now, I enjoy finding and taming all my favorite dinosaurs and building things. I also play Phasmophobia, Minecraft, Katamari, House Flipper, and I like colony sim games like Oxygen Not Included and Banished.

Glory to the Boom! advertisements! Thanks to it I’ve read “LadyCastle”. And it was wonderful! It’s a story about ManCastle all its men (except one) were eaten by a dragon, because of the king’s arrogance. And so, women learn how to live on themselves. It is very interesting because they are dealing with the loss (all the men are dead, remember?), breaking stupid rules and traditions and defending the castle (in their own way). And the characters are great and different.

"Home" -A Rant
When did I start referring to MCLA as home?
"I want to go home." Has stopped referring to the place that I grew up and my biological family. Now I mean, I want to go sit in my tiny townhouse with my 3-5 favorite people. I want to walk into my house and see the people that Ive come to think of as my family. The people I know will have my back no matter what. The people that actually give a fuck about me.
Not someplace where im only valued as "the smart kid", "the golden child", "the one we can count on", "the one who will never do anything wrong", "our strong one", "the one without problems". Well im sorry. But im not always that kid. Im secretly on anxiety meds again after YOU made me stop. I drink. HELL I EVEN SMOKED TONIGHT. Just because of you. Fuck being your perfect child. Fuck being here.
When can I go back to just being me? When can I be happy? When?

New Releases 10/24/17
Happy New Release Day!
In Books --Ladycastle by Delilah S. Dawson, illustrated by Ashely A. Woods and Becca Farrow.  “When King Mancastle and his mighty vassals ride off on a crusade, the women left behind are not at all put out—that’s a lot less armor polishing to do. Of course, when the men get themselves eaten by a dragon and leave a curse that attracts monsters to the castle...well, the women take umbrage with that.
Now, Merinor, the blacksmith’s wife is King, Princess Aeve is the Captain, and the only remaining (and least capable) knight, Sir Riddick, is tasked with teaching the ladies of the castle how to fight, defend, build, and do all manner of noisy things the men had done while the women assumed they were just drunk.”
A new graphic novel I would like to try out sometime. It has been compared to Rat Queen’s but it probably isn’t as violent. At least based on the cover of this issue. At this moment I am not sure if it is just a mini-series or if there will be more past this volume.
--Land of the Lustrous Volume 3 by Haruko Ichikawa “Now with new legs, Phosphophyllite is ready to go to battle. But when that new strength is needed the most, Phos is too scared to use it. Mortified by this failure, Phos undertakes the self-imposed punishment of staying awake all winter while the other gems are asleep. But winter has its own share of dangers…”
It has been a little while since I read volume 3. The last thing I remember is fragile Phos being ate by some creature, getting rescued but has fallen apart again, and once reassembled can now understand the tamed baby version of said creature.
I am enjoying this series so far; aside from earlier comments of having trouble telling characters apart and not liking how everyone treats Phos, but I am not sure when I will get a chance to read this volume. As of this moment my work is not saying we’ll be getting a copy in.
--Yokai Rental Shop Volume 1 by Shin Mashiba “When the lonely Hiiragi Yasase learns that he has a long-lost half-brother, he decides to meet the man—but is shocked by what he discovers. His brother is the proprietor of a pet shop, one that is actually a front for supernatural rentals. Customers in-the-know can rent out yokai to perform supernatural deeds. There’s just one catch: they have to forge a contract written in blood…”
A new manga series I would like to try out. It sounds like it will be a pretty episodic series at first but might have a continuous story later on. It feels a lot like Mashiba’s other work that I’ve read, Nightmare Inspector. Which I still need to finish but I do have the first six or sevens volumes.
In Movies/TV Shows --Flying Witch “Traditionally, when a witch turns 15, she's supposed to go out into the world alone to study magic. Makoto's parents, however, believe that their directionally-challenged daughter should get a high school degree. Instead of being sent out on her own, Makoto and her cat Chito find themselves traveling from the bustling city of Yokohama to Aomori Prefecture, where they'll stay with relatives until Makoto finishes school. It's going to be a big adjustment, and it only gets more complicated since "normal" people aren't supposed to know that witches exist… something that she tends to forget. In the meantime, Makoto, her cousins, and her new friends will have to work just a little harder to adapt to a whole new way of life when the new girl in town is a FLYING WITCH!”
A hit during it’s streaming season, Flying Witch is now out. I haven’t had the time to try this series out but I’ve heard good things about it. It is released in a standard DVD and BR, as well as a PE that comes with a clipboard box, the OST (44 songs), art cards, a microfiber cloth, and a few stickers.
--Space Dandy Complete Series “Strap in for the ride of a lifetime, baby! The Space Dandy complete series is here to blow your mind with 26 episodes of pompadour perfection. Hunting for rare alien species, the one and only Dandy travels the galaxy with his misfit sidekicks towards the ultimate destination - Boobies, the greatest view in the universe.”
I never realized that this awesome show had not been released in a complete set. I bought both S1 and S2 when the LE’s were out for preorder and forgot about any releases after that. And after some back checking that was back in 2015. Not sure what the delay was but here it is for fans who prefer complete sets instead of parts.
I love this show for various reasons. It’s really funny and has some really beautiful episodes; both for the story and the animation. Then there’s the fun trivia about the series. It is one of a few anime (I don’t think it’s the first but it could be, just can’t find information at this time to confirm) to have aired first in the US before it aired in Japan. It aired on Toonami and would air in Japan a few hours later. Except for a few exceptions, each episode is directed by a different person. Some people directed a few episodes but they were rarely side by side.

My cover for the LADYCASTLE finale, featuring my favorite character in the series, King Merinor. It was requested I do something based on Alphonse Mucha, so I went with La Dame aux Camélias. If you like fast-paced stories and Arthurian fantasy filled with badass women, give LADYCASTLE a try while it's still available through BOOM!
My rough sketches for this are up on Patreon to view too! (Don’t worry - all my freelance work is free to view there. ♡)

2019 is here and I’m going to try to be better about doing posts about what I’m reading. So here is my first read of the new year...
I got a bit of slow start this year but started I have. My first completed read of the year was something of an aberration for me - a graphic novel. Now, I will be honest. I’m not a big fan of graphic novels. I have issues reading the text in the correct order, and I often find myself distracted by the illustrations. But I wanted to stretch myself this year, as well as stretch the possibilities for the tween/teen book club. My first attempt at this was Ladycastle by Delilah S Dawson et al.
The men of Mancastle have all gone with their king in search of treasure and a groom that his eldest daughter (whom his majesty keeps locked in a tower to keep her ‘pure’) will accept.
During this quest the king and all the men, save one, are killed by a dragon. This leaves the women of Mancastle to now learn to make do without their menfolk. With the blacksmith named the new king, and the princess freed from her tower to become the head knight, the ladies rename their home Ladycastle and set about to live their lives.
But the castle has been cursed by a wizard and the ladies find themselves having to defend their home, while finding new and innovative ways to settle the problems.
Overall it actually wasn’t too bad. I found myself laughing out loud at some points. I liked the basic idea. I even enjoyed it enough that I may consider reading parts 2, 3 & 4 in the future. I can’t say it was my favourite read, but as an intro to graphic novels it was pretty good. The artwork is very lovely.

The four issue run of Ladycastle, a limited series from Boom Comics, recently came to an end. The premise of the series was intriguing: after almost all the men of a castle in a fantasy land are killed while out on crusade, the women are left to seize power and agency for themselves for the first time. I thought the idea sounded interesting, and, as always, am enthusiastic about supporting comics stories about women by women, so I eagerly dove in.
The series tackles a number of gendered issues over the course of the story, from the traditional devaluation of femininity to accusations of misandry to challenging socialized behaviors. Ultimately, though, the story bit off more issues than four issues could chew. While it tried to say and do a lot of things, the matriarchy it attempted to sell me never really swept me off my feet.
