Otto remembers it too much, especially when he spins his favorite La Dispute album on his CD player and the ninth track plays.

You still cross my mind from time to time, and I mostly smile

He thinks of Awsten's bright eyes and bleach tipped hair and odd outfit. He remembers how warm he felt inside when that strange kid he met on Myspace told him he was in the band. He lets the memory guide him until he hears more familiar lines.

You held my hand, but you were too afraid to speak, you were too afraid to speak and I could never understand

He remembers being led to the alley of a venue while someone's set raged on inside. There was something off. Awsten wasn't saying a word but then--

I remember when you leaned in quick to kiss me, and I swear

It was a quick kiss: chaste and sweet. Otto held his hand up in surprise, one bracing on Awsten's shoulder for balance, hands shaking.

That not a single force on earth could stop the trembling of my hand

He listens mindlessly to the song until it reaches that part and Otto's stomach drops.

And I remember when I knew that you'd be leaving, how I barely kept up breathing

They were going on a big trip to Detroit. They were supposed to be recording the EP that made their band big. Awsten was getting nervous about it, but Otto could help soothe and kiss away those nerves at least for a little.

And I bet if I had to do it all again, I'd feel the same pain

Spoiler alert: they got scammed. Awsten threw up from the nerves after calling his parents and telling them how great they were doing. A heavy air was inescapable in that studio. Otto barely wanted to do anything there.

I remember panicked circles in the terminal in tears

Awsten didn't want to face going home, but he couldn't take staying in that studio. Otto felt the same. They've been growing apart since then. He barely knew how to talk to him let alone calm him down. All Otto could do is hold Awsten's hand in his shaky one and lead him to their flight as Awsten's tears still streaked his face.

Otto almost let go of Awsten's hand until he said, "Don't leave. Please." He had a feeling he meant more than the handholding.

How I wept to god in fits, I've hated airports ever since

Otto turns off his CD player then, not wanting to listen to any more that made him feel so guilty. He hasn't talked to Awsten in months. He wonders if he's any different now, if he still wants to talk to him, if he still would.

Even as the song halts, a line towards the end plays in his head.

So, dear, no matter how we part, I hold you sweetly in my head

And if I do not miss a part of you, a part of me is dead
