While it’s not necessarily the best, a love scene that came to my mind and that I want to tak about is a sex scene in Hideki Arai ‘s Kuuya Shounin ga Ita (adapted from a novel by Taichi Yamada).
(warning for minor spoilers)
While the story is not mainly focused on romance, it includes an unconventional relationship, as the woman is about 20 years older than the main character. This is not that commonly depicted in fiction, especially as the female love interest is drawn in a very realistic way. She is not idealized nor depicted as particularly attractive.
I liked how throughout the story, there is a very subtle change in how she is depicted, and she somehow seems more and more attractive. However, she didn’t get a makeover or suddenly turned more beautiful. She didn’t actually change, but it’s rather the protagonist’s perception that changes as his feelings and attraction grow. She is drawn as seen trough his eyes.
When the two of them actually become a couple, there is a short sex scene that I think was handled very well by the authors. It didn’t seem gratuitous to me.
There is a specific double spread that left a strong impression on me and it was the first thing I thought about when reading today’s prompt for the challenge. It’s nothing too graphic but I guess i still can’t post it due to tumblr’s guidelines. (Besides, it would lose much of its impact when isolated from the rest of the work )
call out post for Kuuya: claims he ‘cant even’ with girls, has an epic rivalry with one that requires them dramatically using their full names whenever they talk to each other also she knows how to bait him with cute guys, apparently.
Final Thoughts: The Aquatope on White Sand (AKA It took me way too long to summarize my feelings to properly praise this damn anime)
Let's be real, I have no idea how Anime America overlooked this, given it was in the Summer 2021 lineup; unless she did watch but left it in the middleground. Then again, was this available in Australia?!
Oh gosh, do I have so much to say about this series other than being a rare gem left unpolished by a bunch of other anime titles that overshadowed its potential. Yeah, I said it.
While the concept didn't seem that interesting at first, the story behind Kukuru and Fuuka felt engaging (once their friendship gradually builds later in the first season). Not to go into much spoiler territory, you have one who has a dream to keep a dying business alive (inside an aquarium), while the other gave up her idol career (wait for it...) to do something different with her life. (Did I mention this was taken place in Okinawa? You can tell the animation team were dedicated to getting the culture and vibe as accurate and appropriate to the area).
In fact, the theming of this anime felt unknown until Episode 12, when I kept remembering Kukuru seeing the two maternity books, which I left out the spoilers, thinking this would come back later in the next season. Unfortunately, that was not the case, so now I'm begging to know if a follow-up sequel movie will happen. On the other hand, "life" seemed to be the main theme, as there were so many hints dropped, from new lives coming to fruition, and old ones passing on, but told in such a genuine, pleasant pace.
As for season 2, this was a massive whiplash transition with changes on the horizon, especially for Kukuru dealing with the loss of her original dream and adapting to new challenges. Fuuka also deals with developing a new personal goal that becomes her dream by the end of the series.
[Enough with my thoughts on the story; how about the characters?]
The supporting characters and cast were enjoyable in their own ways, but Kuuya...OMG he had me going. His default nature is mainly aloof, and shy towards women, but mention alcohol and he's a complete 180. For basically most of the series, he barely gives a shit about his job, but once he transfers to Tingarla, that mentality starts to disappear.
However, no one hit me harder than Fuuka herself. Even before starting the watch, I did some research, and going back to what I said earlier:
YES, FUUKA MIYAZAWA IS VOICED BY AN IDOL, WHICH IS IRONIC AS HELL.-Here comes the Aqours references all over again, but I don't care because Lantis was also involved with the music.
(You have five seconds to stop read--TOO LATE).
Finally, someone else I can appreciate that isn't Riko Sakurauchi; and no I don't hate Riko, but RKK doesn't have a lot of main roles from my knowledge.
So, when I found this out, I immediately put this on my watch list as "HIGHLY ANTICIPATED". Yes, Fuuka was a delightful character, even if at first she didn't seem so confident in taking on a new path. Rikako, in my opinion, did a solid job with her performance.
----------
(Time to wrap this up before I get caught too deep)...
Overall, The Aquatope on White Sand, despite not being as spectacular at face value, it is one anime title that deserves more attention. If you're one for environmental topics and need something more on the chill side, give this a shot. It is still available on Crunchyroll at the time of this post.
--------------------------------------
Hopefully y'all enjoyed reading my final thoughts on this series. My apologies for the late entry; personal reasons got in the way. With that, this concludes the anime watch for April. Next month, I have something really obscure yet beloved to experience.
(If it weren't for Saberspark doing a review on it a while back, this would have not been happening in May. Let's just say, we dial the clocks back to 1999...turn off the lights, lock the doors, get your headphones on, hide the kids and witness the story of one CHEEKY LITTLE HAMSTER).
(UNTIL NEXT TIME, HERE'S HOPING SENPAI NOTICES YOU, BUT NOT WHAT YOU'RE DOING BEHIND THAT DOOR).
You said it wouldn't be difficult to talk Kuuya into smth soooooo I wonder......... Would Kuuya pump his muscles a little bit for us lol? I just like man boobs👀
i don't know if he really has much muscles to pump there, but here ya go anyways
Farm To Cafeteria Canada Offering $10,000 Grants. Should Your School Apply? Details Here!
When I first heard about Farm to Cafeteria Canada grants I immediately asked if they wanted to write a guest post explaining how they work. Happily Carolyn Webb, the Coordinator of Sustain Ontario’s Edible Education Network, was able to do so.
Check out this quote from NorKam Senior Secondary in Kamploops, BC,
“This year at NorKam Senior Secondary in Kamloops, BC, our cafeteria class started a salad bar for a fresh, healthy addition to our regular lunch service. We began this semester by growing our own vegetables, herbs and microgreens in anticipation of improving our cafeteria’s menu selection, and quality and freshness of food.”
Would you like to see a similar quote from your school next year?
Or how about these?
“College Heights Secondary School in the Upper Grand District School Board (Ontario) has had a fantastic first year connecting our school to local food and farms, and launching a full salad bar as part of our cafeteria service.”
“The salad bar was a huge hit today. Local carrots, kale salad with Hollyhock dressing, 3 potato salads -a traditional, a wasabi & a vinaigrette; (our vegan option) Amazing nut & bean veggie burgers, baked Halibut with sea asparagus tartar, and barbequed teriyaki spring salmon. Phew! Student prepared, right down to the condiments. (Gid Galang Kuuyas Naay Secondary School, BC).
Farm to Cafeteria Canada is offering $10,000 grants that would allow elementary and secondary schools in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador to implement a Farm to School program that includes a salad bar meal service.
Farm to School brings healthy, local food into schools, and provide students with hands-on learning opportunities such as growing and cooking that foster food literacy and enable students to make healthy food choices, all while strengthening the local food system and enhancing school and community connectedness.
The Farm to School Movement is growing across Canada. Today more than 1,100 schools and campuses across Canada have identified that they are providing more than 775,000 students with an opportunity to experience Farm to School through school gardens, cooking programs, salad bars and other activities. These schools and campuses estimate they spend nearly $17.5 million annually on local foods. For more information about Farm to School’s growth in Canada check out Canada’s Farm to School map.
Evidence tells us that when Farm to School is offered in K-12 settings:
Students eat more servings of fruits and vegetables (on average .99 - 1.3 more servings), consume less unhealthy foods and sodas, reduce screen time and increase physical activity.
Students are willing to try new and healthy food, and choose healthier options in the school cafeteria and at home.
More students plan and prepare meals at home and more young children ask their families to make healthier purchases.
Students are more knowledgeable about their food and the food system.
Students achieve enhanced overall academic achievement, including grades and test scores.
Food service staff have increased morale and knowledge about local foods.
Each new farm to school job contributes to the creation of 1.67 additional jobs.
Up to $2.16 of economic activity is generated for every $1 spent.
(This data has been drawn from “The Benefits of Farm to School” (2017), The US National Farm to School Network.)
Farm to Cafeteria Canada is proud to champion Canada’s National Farm to School movement and has established the Farm to School Salad Bar grant stream thanks to contributions from the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Whole Kids Foundation. The aim of these grants is to get more students and school communities engaged in growing, purchasing, harvesting, cooking, serving, learning about, and eating healthy local foods at school.
For more information about how to apply for our 2018 grant opportunity please visit the Farm to School Canada Grants 2018 page. Applications are due by March 31st, 2018.

What would happen if Noel and Kuuya switch jobs? Or like switch bodies/lives temporarily?
if they switched jobs, I think Noel would be the office sleaze that gets away with everything just cause of his pretty face. Some sort of nepo baby with a penchant for power harassment definitely. Kuuya would be a small streamer who lives off of the donations from one or two crazed fans. He briefly becomes viral for a clip of him just completely losing his shit malding, but the popularity doesn't hold because his streams just consists of him muttering under his breath and playing silently.
