It is used to express the idea of something being hidden or not visible. For example, "마음 속" (inside the heart), "머리 속" (inside the head), or "방식 속" (inside the method). It often implies a meaning of secrets, mystery, and being hidden. Additionally, "속" is used to indicate that something is located within a more natural or open space, such as a forest, field, or body of water. For example, "숲 속에서" means "within the forest" and "바다 속에서" means "within the sea"- 바닷속 is also a word that means “place under the sea” E.g. 나의 머리 속에는 모든 것이 뒤섞여 있어요 (Everything is mixed up inside my head) 숲 속에서 야생 동물들을 발견해요 (Discover wild animals inside the forest) (3) Another way to differentiate “안" and "속 is based on their antonym. The opposite of 속" is "겉" (surface, exterior). While the opposite of "안" is "밖" (outside). Therefore, "속" is more like the inner part of something. (4) In some cases, "안" and "속" can be interchangeable. It depends on the context and the specific meaning that the speaker or writer wants to convey. E.g. "집 안에" (inside the house) and "집 속에" (inside the house) can be used interchangeably, as both express the idea of being inside a physical location. However, "집 안" might imply being inside the building and specifically in certain rooms, while "집 속" might imply the atmosphere or the feeling inside the house. 우리 집 안에는 두 개의 방이 있어요. (There are two rooms inside our house) → “안" is used to indicate the physical interior of a building or structure, in this case, the interior of the speaker's house 우리 집 속에는 깨끗한 공기가 있어요. (There is clean air inside our house) → "속" is used to indicate the atmosphere or environment within a certain space. So, it’s emphasizing the quality of the air inside the house, rather than the physical structure of the house. 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬: 1. 도서관 안에서 공부해요. (I study inside the library) 2. 상자 안에 뭐가 있어요?" (What is inside the box?) 3. 책 안에는 이야기가 적혀 있어요. (There's a story written inside the book.) 4. 그녀의 마음 속에는 불안이 있었어요. (She had anxiety inside her heart) 5. 그녀의 얼굴은 기억 속에서 계속 생생하게 살아 있어요. (Her face continues to live vividly in my memory.) 6. 꿈 속에서는 우리는 영원히 행복했습니다. (In my dream, we were forever happy) 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞: The information above is my understanding of the differences between "안" and "속". As a result, new phrases are now widely used. 1. 혼밥 - 혼자 밥 먹기 - Eating alone 2. 혼술 - 혼자 술 마시기 - Drinking alone 3. 혼영 - 혼자 영화보기 - Watching movies alone 4. 혼행 - 혼자 여행 가기 - Traveling alone Those term is getting popular also due to the drama 혼술남녀 (Drinking Solo) and TV show 나 혼자 산다 (I Live Alone).
