In the bonus comic at the end of Kakegurui Vol. 16, Mary tries to get Ririka to be more expressive by trying to freak her out with a scary movie, but it seems Ririka might like scary movies!
Also lmfao at the horror movie seemingly starring Kirari.
If you like these translations and want to support them, I have a tip jar on Ko-fi here! Thank you!

Stoppp my college bestie is a kappa, she was the sweetest 🥹 I’ll have to look up sigpi, I’m curious 👀
Fun motts lore: when I was in college, there were frat guys that had this tradition of like,,, barking at women?? This one dude in particular loved to try to get my attention that way and after a few weeks, I threatened to bite him and he never spoke to me again 🥰🥰

{ KAIA GERBER, 22, CISGENDER FEMALE, SHE/HER } Is that MARI ZUKO? A JUNIOR originally from BOSTON, MA, they decided to come to Ogden College to study LITERATURE & CLASSICS. They’re THE CLOSET GAY on campus, but even they could get blamed for Greer’s disappearance.
Tumblr media
THE ESSENTIALS
Mari Zuko, the younger daughter of the dean of Ogden College, has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Or at least the weight of her parent's expectations. Desperate for validation and acceptance, Mari bends over backwards to try to live up to all the hopes and dreams they pinned on her, perfecting the facade of the picture-perfect sorority president with ease. In reality, she's constantly masking who she really is - including her sexuality - and how hard she always has to try.
CHARACTER INSPIRATIONS
morrigan (acotar) - leighton murray (sex lives of college girls) - blair waldorf (gossip girl) - jordan baker (the great gatsby) - sydney sage (bloodlines series) - gabby windey (the bachelorette) - eloise bridgerton (bridgerton) - margaery tyrell (game of thrones) - santana lopez (glee) - abby littman (ginny and georgia) - brittany (bottoms)
TROPES
THE CLOSET GAY - transparent closet - lipstick lesbian -girly girl with a tomboy streak - hard-drinking party girl - hypocrite - weight woes - deadpan snarker & stepford snarker - always second best (to her sister bryn & in some ways to greer) & successful sibling syndrome - jerk with a heart of gold - aloof dark haired girl

EXPANDED PERSONALITY:
Mari Zuko may not have been the typical sorority president. She was sardonic, dry, brash, and most importantly - never caught dead in a pastel. But it became clear from an early age that Mari was the one who her parents pinned their hopes on. Bryn, her older sister, made it obvious she wasn’t going to indulge their father - the dean of Ogden College - and did the exact opposite. In fact, she didn’t even apply to college. So the pressure all fell on Mari. And it’s not that she exactly cared…maybe ambition was too strong a word, considering Mari’s goals weren’t motivated on any personal level, but she certainly had goals. They just were motivated by her desire for others admiration, envy, and, of course, their approval.
HOW SHE EMBODIES HER CHARACTER TROPE: THE CLOSET GAY
Mari is the second daughter of two parents with extraordinarily high expectations for their children. While Bryn, her elder sister, always was able to shake them off without much effort, Mari often felt like she was collapsing under the weight of what they wanted for her. It didn’t help that her father was the Dean of Ogden, his ever sharp eyes on what the going ons on campus were. Not to say Mari didn’t have moments of weakness - she absolutely did. And Greer was one of those moments.
But regardless of her relationship with Greer, Mari knew her coming out wouldn’t be all that accepted or welcomed. She was a sorority president. She was the Dean’s daughter. She had high standards she had to live up to, and as her sister had already discarded those, the expectations for both Zuko sisters fell on her. Regardless of her feelings for Greer, Mari knew they weren’t enough to be ready to come out. Especially when some days, it seemed like half the campus felt the same way
CONNECTIONS
some wanted dynamics -
an angsty tense frenemies situation - do i want to be her or do i want to be with her vibes
more homoerotic friendships. always more homoerotic friendships. it's a closeted queer girls right !!!
any wlw dynamics. like, literally any lmao
someone mari is using to try to get over greer - could honestly be someone masc (rip) or femme, but it's very much just about mari trying to move on
speaking of mascs, ummm, more sad hook-ups bc mari is trying to be straight are always fun (read: angsty) to write !!!
the npc she hooked up with and called greer at the beginning of the year xoxo
still would love a bearding relationship tbh
this would be a past connection, but mari's first girl experience - probably someone from high school, another charged homoerotic friendship for the girlies
men she butts heads with tbh
um ... friends. female friends, specifically, but friends in general would be cool.
RELATIONSHIP TO GREER:
Mari knew that she wasn’t straight, but something about Greer - who she became close with their freshman year, having met several times when they were younger thanks to the Morrison parents being Ogden alumnae (and of course, Mari's father being the Dean) - sharpened all of that. The way she commanded attention in a crowd, the way she lit up a room. Mari fell hard, and fast. But Greer always had boyfriends. Greer was straight. At least publicly.
That was something that Mari felt they had in common, for a long time. That they were straight. Or at least, they weren’t out. But behind closed doors, regardless of what their relationship statuses may have been, the two girls were…together. They passed it off as being close friends, Mari a sorority girl with a penchant for partying that slid right into Greer’s inner circle, but the two of them knew that wasn’t the case. That it was something more.
BIOGRAPHY

SOCIAL CLASS: upper class
FATHER: Dean Zuko (Timothy Olyphant FC)
MOTHER: Ruth Zuko (Rachel Weisz FC)
SIBLING(S)? one older sister - Bryn Zuko (Emily Ratajkowski FC)
SOME FUN FACTS
when mari starts feeling defensive, too vulnerable, or anything along those lines where she feels like she's somewhat backed into a corner, she tends to default to sarcasm so she can hide it
mari holds herself together pretty well, and seems like she's well behaved to the public eye - but girl can party, and when she goes out? she goes hard.
tw eating disorder thanks to her parents never-ending pressure growing up, and feeling like she has to live up to her older sister, one thing mari felt like she could always control was her diet, and she's teetered on the edge of a serious eating disorder for years
she's a huge lit nerd and loves poetry - specifically, vaguely sapphic poetry. emily dickinson is her favorite !!!
she can get pretty manipulative and petty and passive aggressive - it takes a lot to push her there, but she will get there, and usually once she's there with someone, she stays there. exhibit a - monty
she is not very athletic but she did pretend to play tennis freshman year to check out greer (see: slocg when leighton is trying to get with tatum)
she did used to dance ballet, and quit before coming to college. her parents didn't think it was a serious enough career
neither do they think studying poetry is serious enough - so if anyone asks, mari wants to be an editor or something
but in reality, she takes every poetry or feminist lit class she can
FALL SEMESTER TOUCHBASE
let's see - after homecoming with the texts, mari thought "g" might actually be greer - and nearly lost her damn mind
she ran into the very drunk, publicly allowed to be freaking out naive newcomer and it made her very angry and jealous and everything bc she felt like she couldn't act out like that, since no one knew the truth about her and greer
"no one" - link, ida, lennon, and sorta vaguely diego? knew i think that's it but if i'm forgetting we talked about your muse knowing PLEASE PLEASE message me again bc i feel like i am forgetting someone
she also then hooked up with someone to put greer out of her mind and accidentally called them by greer's name so that uh...didn't help
this year, besides the hook-up, ollie, jesse, kepler (....sort of, she's still denying it after those texts), & maybe milo (we'll see where the nye thread finishes up lol) have learned the truth (again if i'm missing your muse plz yell at me)
speaking of the texts, mari got blackmailed by g to send a text to all greer's hook-ups from last year during her bday party
she did not get any clues in the kkg haunted house - even though it's her chapter, mari flat out refuses to go through it every year so
but she knows about some of them - and she knows ollie suspected milo of being "g"
she then got a letter after thanksgiving, accused milo of planting it in her room, and shared it with jesse in a wholesome (read: drunken) bonding moment
realistically there's still more i one day would want to add to this, but !! for now !!! it's better than it was

choose violence ask game, 7 for kakegurui, 2 and 10 for sge !
ohh 7 is so hard actually.. the only kkg characters i hate are ones that like. everyone hates. (cough cough jun kiwatari). i guess the closest i could say to that is yumeko or mary, NOT because i actually hate them (i love them) but bc i feel like they get sooo much attention from the fandom and other, more minor (or even major) characters get sidelined. i do NOT hate them though i just want other characters to get attention too (give terano some love guys) oh actually another character that's kinda close to that is yuriko, cause every ships her with midari. i do like the ship but yuriko is just such a minor character that i find it hard to love her, and then seeing everyone ship her with my Fav Of All Time is a little. like. come on guys yumedari is Right There. why must you pick yuriko of all people. based on like two canon interactions. ugh. but i still like yuriko she's cool
okay as for 2 and 10 these are gonna be a liiitle hard because i havent majorly interacted with sge in so long but i'll do it for you babe 2: i'll pick anadil bc she's always been my baby, she would NOT top hester. i know she has zero canon personality but pretty much her only character trait is being hester's henchmen, and i feel like that would extend to fucking. i could see her being a service top maybe, or Maaaybe a power bottom, but she just has very submissive/bottom vibes to me cause she's always submissive to hester in general 10: this is Really Hard. um. can i just say literally anything that isn't hestadil. truly i do not care about anything else. okay but honestly i'd have to say hophie probably. sophie to me is a lesbian for one, but also i think her character arc is genuinely ruined with hophie. like, the whole POINT of her development is that she learns she doesnt need a boyfriend/love interest/prince, and she's content to live her life without one. the fandom shipping hophie always irked me because it just contradicts her character but then soman actually MAKING IT CANON AT THE END. UGH. DONT FUCKING GET ME STARTED. soman i love you but you have made some drastically misguided choices. jesus christ. also i never really liked hort lmao

My sister never loved me. The one I thought was closest to me was using me always. It was always like she needed me to talk about her problems. She needed us to help her. She talked to us about la Vibora and all her high school friends. Then my sister left to college a Hella states away and she was free from our hell family and she made like two friends and she (this should have Been a clue) made a romance with someone and during that period spent the less time in communication with me. To the point I said if you don't say you are alive during this summer I will call the cops. Then I was in college and she was an adult. Graduate from Stanford. And she lived at home again because she was sick. She had surgery. And I was so attention at that time bc my sister returned to me and also she was sick. I spent the night on a bus and then a night in the hospital bc my sister my family is my all. As I grew older Ely introduced me to Guinness and to alcohol. I became alcoholic when my roommate gave me like two 24 packs to finish off. But it was Ely who introduced me to alcohol. If my roommate had said have at this beer I would have been like um idk if I hadn't already been introduced by my sister
When I had my drunk driving crash and I was sobbing telling mom and she asked me amongst other things who introduced you to that I lied. I said it was a friend as t college. But it was Ely.
Going through my own thing is hard bc idk if I'm a person like mom or Ely or anyone else I struggle in a way I never had to find identity bc I'm always being a fu kkg weird sjw wondering and asking if you are OK with gay ppl, what do you think about Trans ppl?. Meanwhile I endure racism. Bc my sister never brought it up. When it happens almost at every interaction I don't know how to react. I don't know how to find my way out. I'll never forgive myself once being asked/found out as mexican laughing at racist mexican jokes. I grow older and never make a connection to college friends. Of my high-school friends I got calls from Margaret sporadically bur then she burned her home, tried to kill her male relative (I understand) and went to jail. From jail she contacted me and was born again Christian and it killed me so much I deleted Facebook. I later found videos of her mom taking her to Nigeria to testify and say she was not a lesbian anymore. My best friend from High school was so hurt she was unrecognizable it hurt to speak to her so I stopped . Today I have no friends. It felt like when I tried I gave and got nothing. I thought ok focus on family. But that was wrong bc I focus on Ely. And that bitch only used me to find anyone a friend a girlfriend any one who is a stranger to be around her. Bc to her anyone who is a stranger is more valuable to her and more normal to her than anyone in her family. She sought outward and is fulfilled by out ward persons.

Welcome back for another comparison of the original Japanese text against the official English translations! We’ll also be doing a bit of analysis too.
This month, there were some oddities. Mostly word choices, tone, and connotations, though there is one line that is entirely mistranslated.
This one will be a bit longer, so let’s get into it.
Right away, something that leapt out to me is that the naming convention for this chapter is entirely different from every other chapter in the series. Kakegurui has a formula for its chapters titles, which is “___の女,” which turns into “____ Woman,” or, because Yen Press insists on using “girl” instead of “woman,” it becomes “____ Girl.” That’s not the case here. The title is literally, unambiguously, and simply: 姉妹 / Sisters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the first few pages, things are accurate in terms of content, but Kirari’s tone is...kind of off. She comes off sounding a little brattier than she actually is in Japanese. I’m willing to bet this is the translator’s way of trying to make her sound younger, but it doesn’t square, especially since the way younger Kirari speaks in Japanese tends to just be ever so slightly bubblier than how she speaks as a young woman: she’s a little bit more direct about how she says things, less mysterious. But, she still has a very feminine and polite way of speaking still. Put a pin that – we’ll touch on that a bit later.
Also, if we wanted to split hairs, we could talk about how on the second page, Kirari doesn’t do anything to indicate saying “Boy, that game...”
If you wanted to be closer to her original tone in Japanese, she said something more along the lines of “That game of Old Maid was a lot of fun, wasn’t it?” And, if you want to be hyper literal without any localization, she says, “That was a lot of fun, wasn’t it? That game of Old Maid!” But again, this is so minor it’s more or less negligible.
Tumblr media
Where her tone diverges a bit too much for comfort is when she’s recapping what their family members were up to during the game, and this is the bulk of where her bratty tone shows up.
In English, Kirari has the following to say about her relatives:
Did you see Rin’s face? The way he tries not to show any emotion is cute.
And Mira...Hee hee! She’s hilariously easy to read.
Miri and Miyo, they seem to think the game is childish. Like, we are kids, so I wish they would enjoy it honestly.
Sumika and Terano didn’t join in...I hope we play next time!
In Japanese, Kirari actually says this:
顔に出すまいとしているところがいじらしかったわね。 Did you see that look on Rin’s face? It was charming/lovable/sweet how he tried not to show it (his emotions) on his face, wasn’t it?
ミラは。。。フフ。 分かりやすすぎて面白い。 As for Mira...[giggle], she was too easy to read; it was funny.
三理と三欲は子どもっぽい遊びとバカにしていそうだったわね。子どもなんだから素直に楽しめばいいのに。 Miri and Miyo seemed to think it (the game) was childish and stupid/silly. They are children, though, so they should just have fun.
淑光と定楽乃は遠慮していたけれど。次は是非遊んでみたいわ。 Sumika and Terano were reserved/refrained from joining. I definitely want to play with them next time.
Tumblr media
So content-wise, it’s accurate, but tonally...there’s a little bit of iffy-ness, and that’s all I wanted to point out.
There’s also one more slight scuff right after that part that I want to touch on, because it starts to fill in some pieces about how Kirari and Ririka were raised.
In English, Kirari says: We all need time to play with people our age now and then, huh?
In Japanese, Kirari says: たまには同年代と気楽に遊ぶ時間か必要よね? Sometimes you just need to take it easy and play/have fun with people your own age, don’t you?
Tumblr media
Remember how I mentioned Kirari speaks very politely in general? This is almost certainly because of a few reasons, such as her being raised more or less as royalty, but more relevantly because of the line above: it implies Kirari and Ririka spent the majority of their childhood around adults, not playing or communicating with kids their own age.
As a fandom, we often joke that Kirari and Ririka communicate with their peers in bizarre ways, that they’re almost like space aliens who don’t know how to interact with other people in a “normal” way. And there are some overlapping assumptions we can make about why that is (being raised in a traditionalist household, being groomed to be a successful heir, being raised to be strong gamblers, etc.), but that line above is one of the first explicit, textual clues we get as to why they seem emotionally stunted in terms of how they relate to others: they spent their foundational years around stiff, traditionalist, aloof adults who were focused on grooming perfect heirs, not raising two young girls. Time spent with people their own age and just playing seems to have been a rare treat. It could explain why this particular game of Old Maid has been revisited so many times in the series: it was a rare occasion that all the Bami children got to spend time together.
I’d also like to point out how sad Kirari looks here, when she touches Ririka’s mask as if she wants to take it off, and Ririka pulls her hand away, leaving the mask in place.
Tumblr media
Kirari has cared about this — her sister’s own will— for a long time, it seems. Which leads me into the next scuffed translation that occurs on the page after this quiet moment between the twins.
In English, Kirari says: Well, see you next time...Ririka.
In Japanese, Kirari actually says: また今度ね、リリカ。 Another time, then, Ririka.
Tumblr media
This probably goes without saying, but the English doesn’t really make sense in context. It implies Kirari is leaving her to go somewhere else, whereas the Japanese makes much more sense: Kirari is accepting that Ririka isn’t willing to be open in that moment, and is assuring Ririka that there will be another opportunity to do so in the future.
Skipping forward a few pages, there’s something that got lost in translation just because of how nuanced Japanese is, and how the conjugation of the language can change depending on how polite or rude someone is being. When Ririka asked for sixes, she said so in a very brusque way!
The くれ Ririka uses here is commanding, not asking or requesting. It’s also very informal, and is cited as a way to tell someone to give you something that “shows mild disdain for the receiver.” She’s done playing nice, and she wants Kirari to know it.
Tumblr media
The next part is a few more pages in, and the translator added a bit more than I think they should have, including straight up adding a line so that Kirari gets her weird, distorted mean girl tone again. So I’m putting this here so you can compare the original Japanese to what it shakes out to when closely translated into English. I’ve bolded the offending lines in question.
In English, Kirari says: You know, Ririka...this feels so weird. Me, trying to guess your intentions. Me, trying to outfox you. It’s all so much fun, but...Reading minds...is something you try on people besides yourself. That’s who you are, Ririka. You’ve become such an “other” that I enjoy gambling with you now. The sun will set shortly.
In Japanese, Kirari actually says: ねリリカ不思議な気分だわ。貴女の意図を推測する私。貴女の裏をかこうとする私。それはとっても楽しいけれど。ねリリカ、ギャンブルに興ずる程に貴女が他者になってゆく。。。ー間もなく日も暮れる。
You know, Ririka, I feel strange. Me, guessing your intentions. Me, trying to outwit you. It’s so much fun, though...trying to read someone is an act done to other people. You know, Ririka, the more you gamble, the more you become someone else. The sun will set soon.
Tumblr media
Subtle changes in wording, but with big changes in tone and meaning...or just straight up a wrong sentence in the case of Kirari saying, “hey, now that you’re another person I actually like playing with you now,“ which is not what she says AT ALL.
A few pages alter, when Mary and Ririka reveal that Ririka’s will is to defeat Kirari, what they actually said gets sanitized a bit, and it’s a shame, because it helps support why Kirari is a little flustered on the following page.
In English, Ririka, Mary, and Kirari say: Ririka: You lost, you’re down. Mary: The hands are already around your neck. Ririka: And this... Mary: ...is Ririka’s will! Kirari: ...I see. Yes, I understand well enough now.
In Japanese, what Ririka, Mary, and Kirari actually said was: Ririka: 敗北即死 = Defeat, instant death Mary: 首に手をかけられている = There are hands around your neck. Ririka: これが = This is... Mary: リリカの意志だ!= ...Ririka’s will! Kirari: 。。。分かった。もう十分にわかったわ。= ...Okay / ...I see. I’ve seen enough / I understand enough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I’d like to take a moment to point this out, which is something that I, along with quite a few others, have been pointing out for years at this point: Kirari’s goal this whole time, as far as Ririka was concerned, was to help Ririka unblend from her and become her own person. Whereas...in this moment, Ririka’s goal is to destroy her little sister. Poor Kirari! No wonder she seems a bit taken aback!
And this leads into our first ever glimpse into Kirari’s thoughts and feelings, direct and unfiltered, from her. The English translations do not do this part justice, in my opinion. The English translation focuses on Ririka and Kirari being one. And that’s mostly fine...but the Japanese touches briefly on how lonely Kirari feels.
It is 100% sad girl Rari hours in this Chili’s tonight, y’all.
I’m going to transcribe this whole section so you can get exactly what the original Japanese says during Kirari’s internal monologue during the final showdown.
In English, Kirari internally monologues the following across several pages: Me...and me. What is wrong with me being myself? I love myself. I always want to remain me. But there are two people here. We can’t remain one forever. We’ll be split apart, I’m sure. When will that moment arrive? How will we feel, at the end of it? I’ll stop being one someday. We will be sisters. You will be another person. You know, Ririka, if I could make it happen... If I could make it happen... I wish we could choose that of our own free will.
In Japanese, Kirari actually internally monologues the following across several pages: 私と私。
Me and I/me. What’s wrong with me being me? I love me. I always want to be me. But there are two of us here. I won’t be alone forever. We will surely be separated. When will it happen? I wonder how we will feel. When will I stop being one? We will be sisters. You will be another person. You know, Ririka, that’s what I hope for... Hopefully...it will be done by our will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During our first glimpse into Kirari’s mind, we find that Kirari has been wishing and hoping , since she was a young child, that she and her sister could be two different people, that they didn’t have to be one, and that Kirari didn’t have to be so alone.
I’m very curious to see how their relationship evolves now that they have become fully unblended, and what Kirari’s victory means going forward in the election.
Anyway, if you’re still here, thanks for reading! I hope this clarified some parts of this very important chapter and that it enhances your enjoyment of the series.
In the meantime, I’ll keep chipping away at Kari translations. :)

It's Finished!!
My KKG fic All To You is finally finished! It was a year long writing (and sometimes art) project. I had many many followers come back for every update and let me know what they enjoyed and I'm glad for the fandom because if it wasn't for your thirst of gambling lesbians I definitely wouldn't have finished the novel length fic that many have cried and enjoyed. Cheers!

How have you managed to stay into kakegurui for so long? I tried to get back into recently but found it really difficult since ths election arc feels like it's been going on years now 😭
I really can’t say I’m into KKG anymore. When the last chapter came out, I found myself thinking that if, for whatever reason, the manga was to end abruptly, it wouldn’t mean much to me.
Truth be told, KKG was never about KKG. The series has been my training wheels as a creator for far too long. After finishing the last chapters of OTAP I’m dealing with severe burn-out because it feels like I know these characters too well; they’ve become my comfort zone. Because of that, the AU I’ve been working on is much different from what I’m used to — to the point that some characters might even be OOC. It doesn’t matter. Hopefully, that will be the first step towards some original works.
I’d like to see what I’ll think five or ten years from now, when I’ll remember spending a whole pandemic AND a possible world war III writing about lesbians and gambling.
