Porcelain: I can’t believe all these people dressed in black. Black was our thing, and now everyone’s doing it to be “cool”.
Lemieux: They are all posers.
Gerard: Porcelain, Lemieux, and I cannot stress this enough, we are at a funeral.

I have very few criticisms about the final season, but I think my major one is that there were barely any primates (apes/monkeys). Even if they were forced to by Scarlemagne, the primates were the ones who hurt the humans the most out of all the mutes. I really wanted an episode with them in it, probably with them apologizing to the humans, and Scarlemagne apologizing to them.
Yea you have a point. I didn’t think much of until I saw Gerard walk by in the epilogue and then I was like “heeeyyyyy wait a minute.” I’m assuming the canon explanation is that they were picking themselves up and find/rebuild their home after the battle of Aurum and had no interest in interacting with others.
Like with my post with the Mod Frogs, we should’ve at least gotten to their reactions to the warning song. They didn’t even need lines, just to shake their heads or laugh at the H.M.U.F.A to give us a reason as to why they’re not there and a glimpse to what they’re doing and how relations are working. Hell, what about the prahm-posal??? They sung to Fun Gus, they could’ve sung to the Goth Apes too. Granted, they weren’t slighted by the humans, but still.

Hugo Big Brother AU Headcanons
When Kipo was just a lil baby, Hugo would always cheer her up by talking with her, playing, singing, and through piano music.
He taught Kipo how to play the piano.
While Lio would be out getting groceries, Hugo would babysit Kipo and they would play castle. (Hugo as the trapped king and Kipo as the knight.)
As Kipo got older they both got a little extreme while playing castle. Kipo would have her own castle fort while Hugo would have his own and they would try to conquer each other’s kingdom.
Lio keeps a tally on who wins.
Board games like, Waterloo are their favorite to play and they both enjoy reading Shakespeare and would try to re-enact them.
Hugo could recite all of King Lear and Hamlet.
Lio is an astronomer and chemist.
Kipo is a mathematician and astronomer.
Hugo with his passion for music as gotten him interested in acoustics and biology(in honor of Song).
Ever since Hugo and his family escaped from the last burrow, he has NEVER used his sweat on others ever again.
But since the Mega-Monkey attack, Kipo and Hugo got separated in the sewage canals. He’s been hiding and fighting to find his little sister, and after he finds Kipo with the others(he saves them from the Newton Wolves) they get ambushed by Goth Apes later and he accidentally uses his sweat and the little secret goes out.
He’s hesitant to explain it all to them but tells that the mutation caused his pheromones to change only work in primates.
Ever since their encounter with the Goth Apes, they follow him around, wanting him to join their emo band. He’s only disinterested because he doesn’t want to leave his family and prefers classical.
Just like Kipo, he sees Wolf as a little sister despite her lack of trust with him.
When Kipo started showing signs of her mutation, Hugo was there for her and explained what he knew of the experiment for humans to live on the surface.

more KATAOW fix-it AU ideas up for adoption (spoiler warning!)
1) time travel... of a sort. everyone except Emilia get future memories sometimes, so the gang can do things better - manage the jaguar powers better, save Song right away, don't let Emilia have the journal, etc, and the humans are less fearful and angry towards the mutes because they remember their fun, safe and inclusive future, and vice versa. many of the mutes start getting along, Scarlemagne redemption is earlier maybe (doesn't kill the mod frogs, doesn't enslave the burrow humans, frees existing slaves... maybe, it's up to you) so humans don't mistrust mutes as much... Emilia has no army. happy ever after! you decide what happens to her. maybe she gets jailed or something. no "cure", everyone's fine and alive, hooray!
2) Hugo / Scarlemagne rescued with Kipo... yes. it's popular and I've briefly touched on it before, but I didn't talk about the greater implications. he doesn't enslave humans, so the tensions aren't as high, plus he lives in the burrow, so they get used to mutes, and he gets a good childhood, yay!! later he can get out of the burrow, with or without Kipo (most likely they got separated), gain power with his ability, and become a strong ally in the Human-Mute Alliance because he is with Kipo and his ability and newfound minions (the Goth Apes gang) are useful. also with him on Kipo's side, there is no Oh No! Scarlemagne Put A Bounty On Your Head! plot, which makes things a lot more smooth sailing for the gang because nobody's trying to kidnap them at every turn. they can focus on taking down Emilia, who is less powerful than in canon, as less humans are anti-mute. hopefully she won't have time to make the "cure", so everyone is fine and alive!
3) they don't turn Song back, so she's available for the burrow army fight and the final fight, both of which could really be helpful. don't get me wrong, I love their family bonding moments and her finally being free, but I also love deus ex machina, happy endings, Hugo / Scarlemagne alive, a lot less "cured" mutes, and absolutely hate how Emilia was beating a child up. she can turn back later, during peacetime, and have all the bonding in the world, they all deserve it!!
these AUs are more niche and about the "cure" especially:
1) saving Yumyan: if Kipo gets shot with all the darts, emptying Emilia's ammo, Emilia can't shoot Yumyan. (Kipo is immune, so it's ok)
2) somehow the journal gets damaged or lost or burnt or something. deus ex machina of some goose stealing it, Emilia can't make the cure, hooray! idk what happens after that, but the most is that she'll be stalled. back to being underground resistance, eventually her minions leave because inclusivity is more fun, maybe she turns herself into a mute, whatever. you decide.
3) Margot has a change of heart earlier, so she warns the gang before they go into Deathstalker territory, preventing them from being held captive. Or maybe they alter their team (preferably all-human plus Kipo), or go in with a plan, but ultimately they defeat Emilia, rescue Margot's brother, and make it out without anyone getting "cured". Margot and her brother join the Alliance - a few extra hands never hurt! they can get redeemed, or stay far away from the gang, up to you, but either way, reinforcements and no "cured" Yumyan (or other mutes) are good. also Kipo would stress less, and feel less guilty about Yumyan because he's ok in this au
4) (during the burrow army battle) nobody can hear Emilia, so she can't be freed, so she can't free the other humans, so all the humans get captured peacefully, no mutes get "cured", and they all become friends eventually.
That's all for now, thank you for your attention! All these AUs are free real estate! please pm/ tag me if you adopt them tho, because I would like to see them 🥺🥺🤣, thanks! You don't have to tag me if you don't want to though; I don't really mind, I just want more fix-it content lol

Title: the puppet knight
Summary: AU. Instead of finding the Goth Apes, Lio, and a baby Kipo, Hugo runs into Dr. Emilia instead.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
A/N: Something I had to get out of my head and start writing. Pretty much had this one part done before season 3, and thought I’d try to save it for Halloween. Now I’m ignoring season 3, and going ahead with posting this for Halloween (or around Halloween, is it still Halloween in Tumblr time?)

tl;dr : Scarlemagne Deserves at Least SOME of our UwUs (spoilers for S2)
I just finished watching Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts’ second season and gosh, Hugo is such an interesting character to consider. Like wow, they really exposed this guy (and Lio), hard. This post will break down his past, why he ended up going bananas (haha- get it?), and potential routes for this character in a future season. WARNING: Long-ass post ahead... again
The mysterious Scarlemagne is first introduced in S1 as this Victorian/Elizabethan-era (sorry, I don’t really know my history beyond SIX) loving, piano-playing mandrill who was controlling humans and trying to basically take over the world. In the first season, we only see him as a bit crazy and with no reason behind his want for world domination, as most villains do. We get hints of a history between Kipo’s dad and a-once-known-as Hugo, but aside from that, we know next to nothing about our main antagonist. In terms of S1′s Scarlemagne, I saw him as calculative and clever, he had a backup plan and was teetering between a composed civilian and instinctual animal. Because of all the foreshadowing, I was glad to find an episode in season two (2) that delved into Hugo’s story with Lio (specifically Ep8, although throughout the season there are clips of the two’s history together).
In S2, we find out that Scarlemagne was once one of the last non-mutated animals in the world named Hugo. Lio and his wife, Song, were his caretakers and experimented on him to discover and isolate the gene that caused the animals to mutate. As Hugo grew up, he learned how to read and play the piano by Lio and Song. The couple loved Hugo as if he were their son and honestly, they really wanted what was best for him.
However, it was unclear how long Lio and Song had mutated Hugo and how long he was used as a milking machine by Dr. Emilia. These two scenes were strictly a montage to the audience and that’s why I believe we need to cut him some slack (just like how Kipo did in this season). If we’re going off of Hugo’s point of view, we need to consider that he was in a box for his entire life before escaping to the surface. Since we don’t know how long it was before Dr. Emilia discovered Hugo, I can only assume that there was simply enough time for him to learn/read about the old ages when monarchs were still a thing. He may have a larger vocabulary, but socially, I believe his mental age has got to be no more than 14 years old. I say this because his behavior during his time with Lio and Song (such as when he was playing the piano before he got caught) was still respectful, open to learning about the surface before it came crumbling down, and he was caring - especially with the unborn Kipo. That means he wasn’t introduced to distress until after Dr. Emilia had found him.
Even after Dr. Emilia started abusing him, he was still visited by Lio (as seen in the montage - Song was most likely busy with managing her own mutations and Kipo) but these visits were limited. Meaning that Lio was no longer teaching, and more there to provide accompaniment and comfort. Therefore, if he was still mentally at 14, he certainly did not grow to experience any sense of negative emotions aside from Dr. Emilia; even then, he shut out most of those emotions and kindly did this for Dr. Emilia for the sake of Kipo and her family - his family. So without learning that humans could be “bad” or had mixed emotions aside from loving - thanks to Lio and Song - Hugo grew up incredibly ignorant of the “outside world” and believing that humans had his best interest at heart. This is apparent when he defends humans once up on the surface and generally shy/awkward when he meets the goth apes. Again, this is because of his literally sheltered childhood where he lacked the social interactions he needed to develop as he grew up.
So because of all this, when Hugo notices not only that Lio left him behind, but didn’t look for him, didn’t trust him to hold Kipo, and even gave her his own blanket, the anger and all of these pent up negative emotions come rushing back tenfold. In terms of character, I think the way he received the news was very appropriate for the show. He didn’t know how else to think. So going off of the one book he was obsessed over and just trying to cope with the betrayal, Hugo goes off to make sure nobody ever feels left out again by forcefully uniting all of the mutes and turning the tables on the humans that he once trusted. Hugo took advantage of what he was given to try to make means of what he was feeling in his heart. I mean throughout the last two episodes you can see Kipo really getting through to him, but I believe that he was/is so full of grief and anger that he pushes away that lost feeling of being loved as a defense mechanism so he could never get hurt again.
In the final episode of season two (2) Scarlemagne was carted away with the TimberCats and was genuinely astonished that Kipo would willingly sacrifice her sanity to save mutes. This is a foil to when Lio left Hugo behind. Leading up to this point, Scarlemagne had pegged all humans to always think of themselves before anyone else, so when he finds out a human would go out of their way to help a mute, aka someone like him, he doesn’t know how to compute. I think in a future season the show could really work on a redemption arc with this character. Scarlemagne is still socially ignorant - he doesn’t understand what complex emotions are, and if Kipo was already starting to open up his heart this season, I don’t see why she won’t continue to try to help him in a future season. My only hope is that Kipo won’t take what her dad said to heart, that Scarlemagne will never change, and that she’ll continue to be as stubborn as ever to help those in need.
The other route I can possibly see happening is Scarlemagne turning into a mega mute, as in, no longer humanoid and going complete animal. This would be an interesting route to take since we do see a progression of him going slightly more insane by the end of the season. We have to also consider that the formulas given to Hugo were the same given to Kipo and Song, who both turned into mega mutes that lost their sanity. If this were the case, however, I feel like two consequences would occur: (1) any character development for this character from that moment on, would be wasted (2) progression of the plot may become stale given that there is no longer a clever antagonist and solely an enemy that needs to be taken down, which can be a hit or miss with the audience and the show becomes more or less one-dimensional. So in my opinion, a redemption arc, though cliche, would be a much better route to take, although I wouldn’t mind seeing how the plot changes if they choose to do something like the latter.
What do you guys think? I’m always up for discussion - and as always this was just a fun post, so please don’t judge me based on this! Thanks~

Lemieux: Wow, Scarlemagne.
Gerard: That really sucks.
Scarlemagne: And the only reason I didn't tell you guys is because I don't value you as people, so it's, like, why be honest?
Porcelain: Yeah, you just went back and ruined what you said.

Kipo and the age of wonderbeasts au idea: An Au where Dr Emelia decides to kidnap mutes to try and find the cure while Scarlegmagne was still in the DNA burrow. These kidnapped mutes include younger versions of the mutes we meet on the show (Molly, Good billions, cotton ect). I can imagine Lio and song being disgusted at the treatment the new Mute prisoners are being subjected to and also introducing a younger Hugo to other mutes.
OOo this would be an interesting au. What would it be named tho?
Dr.Emilia, seeing that the Hugo Project was a successful in living through the mutation, wants to get a hold of other mutes to see if she can start applying what the team has learned to them and start curing them.
Lio and Song, who are working through Project Kipo on their own time, are so incredibly nervous at this new step. They’re planning to conceive a mutated kid soon and the emotional health of their now-teen mandrill kid has been in jeopardy for a while now. Adding new very pissed off and hostile mutes to this situation complicates this even more. They’re debating amongst themselves if they can conceive and then escape with Hugo before the new mutes are captured and brought in, or should they follow the original plan and wait until after Kipo’s born? But by then mutes mightve been captured and in the process of being cured at that rate.
The Au probably works like this. Hugo is born and mutated and found out just a little bit earlier than in canon in canon maybe?
In canon he was discovered while Song was pregnant/trying to get pregnant and that made him in his teens i think. (He’s only put to work for a limited amount of time before he then spends 13 years on the surface, and hes like canonically mid-twenties by the time Kipo’s up there. Someone did the math once a while back. But the timeline isnt super concise i think.) I also like the idea of Kipo not being in picture so they can further debate it/ maybe get input from a mute going “wtaf why would you experiment on your child tf is wrong with you why would think mutes would care for a hybrid freak???”
Anyways, Kipo isn’t conceived yet though that was def on Lio and Song’s mind. Hugo isn’t aware he was going to get a little sister soon and also isn’t aware that Emilia wants to capture more mutes yet. He’s just suffering. Emilia sets up teams to capture mutes. (I think Lio would be on the team because he’s been shown to do surface exploration a lot. So he’s trying to flub it without letting everyone else know.) And I can see her using Hugo’s pheromones on any primates they come across.
While the exact location of Lio and Song’s burrow is a tad unclear, we know it’s in an urban area, not far from Cappucino’s and within a decent walking distance from the Goth Apes/close to Ape territory. I’m assuming the mutes they capture are the mute spiders, Goth Apes, anyone traveling to/from Capp’s, Newton Wolves (they scavenge for materials/food near the apes seemingly.), Ratland Rats/anyone going to ratland, and Mod Frogs. I don’t see them going super far out on foot so it’s very opportunistic and limited.

AU where instead of running into the Goth Apes, Lio and baby Kipo, Hugo gets kidnapped by Emilia instead and is slowly brainwashed the old-fashioned way....
Due to initially having limited resources after the DNA Burrow collapse that prevent her from immediately harvesting his pheromones again, Emilia confines Hugo to a simpler cage but also tries to “train” him to be more “obedient.” (No one can use Hugo’s harvested pheromones to directly mind control Hugo himself, the pheromones cannot be used against their genetic point of origin, Emilia’s tested and confirmed this; she’s left to brainwash Hugo the old-fashioned way....) Emilia becomes obsessively careful to cover every inch of her body when dealing with Hugo since his pheromones require physical contact to work; she also tends to time direct interaction with him when he’s physically weakened.
Emilia’s “training” also ends up messing with Hugo’s memories of Lio and Song and everything that came before she took him. (Eventually remembering them more clearly does not actually improve anything for him....) Emilia’s efforts pay off and Hugo gets rather thoroughly conditioned to obey her above everything else, and to believe he exists only to serve her. Emilia has been able to condition him to believe that something Bad Will Always Happen if he displeases/disobeys her (this is established through a process of brutal Examples). She even has him accepting that her ultimate goal to isolate the mutagen and remove his intelligence is for the best.
Emilia expands her agenda to better include “uniting” humanity, and she becomes more prone to using Hugo’s harvested puppet pheromones on anyone who resists. She eventually does capture the Goth Apes and other mute primates to serve as both her puppet army and additional hostages to use against Hugo after she allows him to form some attachment with them.
Emilia generally reconsiders her use of Hugo and starts taking him out into the field as a weapon/tool even when she has the pheromone harvesting system set up. Part of her “training” involves a little more calculated use of “mercy,” which includes the previously mentioned field missions that Hugo’s grateful for (grateful for any chance to get out and away from the treadmill), giving him some time with other mute primates (and he’d better especially continue to be Good and Obedient for their sake), and Emilia giving a cloak and a mask to Hugo as a “gift.” (The mask and cloak are also meant as a “uniform,” something else to symbolically keep him in line; it’s patterned after hers to both give the illusion of “attachment” between the two, and to actually more clearly show that he directly serves her.) Hugo does get genuinely attached to the mask and cloak because he’s barely allowed anything, and clings to what little he gets to have.
Hugo’s mask did not start out cracked. It got damaged in a fight or some other crisis in the field. Emilia chastised him for letting it get wrecked like that, and reminded him to do better.
(This literally just started as a visual I thought would be neat to sketch, and then I started thinking about the backstory behind the image and it went downhill from there. I'm literally that one Jake line/meme: "I was just playin' around with my imagination and then everything got intense.")
ETA: Forgot to mention--Emilia learns about mute sensitivity to certain sounds/high frequencies earlier after witnessing a fight between the Timbercats and the Umlaut Snäkes. As if things couldn’t get worse for Hugo/Scarl in this AU, it ends up part of her “training” to brainwash/get Hugo under her control.
