Hey - not sure if you're aware but someone is trying to sell a binding of your fic on Etsy for profit - won't let me add the link in the questions but the user is called NovaBindery
Hi, thanks for letting me know, I’m aware there are several sellers on etsy and on instagram, tiktok, their own janky sites, etc. It’s a truly pervasive problem in our community right now.
And I’m tired of it. I’ve been urging people to keep fandom free for a while now, but it honestly feels like screaming at the sea. In the past few days alone, several dramione authors have pulled their works from ao3 and at least one has left the community altogether.
I’m not going anywhere, nor are my fics, but this abhorrent behavior is extremely disheartening. I started participating in fandom and sharing my writing because it was a fun hobby. So while I won’t be pulling my works, I can say that those who are out here commodifying my stories have made me simply want to participate less. It’s no longer fun if my extremely limited free time is spent reporting shops or fielding questions about commissions. I have lots of stories I’d love to still share, but it’s taking too much of my energy to deal with all this and then I find I no longer feel as inspired to write and share fics. When my stress relieving activity starts to become the source of stress, it’s time to pull back.
If you are a reader and you do come across these shops, please report them. Unfortunately, I have no other recourse that wouldn’t involve me revealing personal/private information and again, the entire reason I participate in fandom is to have a fun, silly time writing about two idiots kissing and to read others’ stories about the same two idiots kissing.
I sincerely appreciate all the lovely people who are trying to keep this space as free of monetization as possible. Thank you ❤

Now that some authors are taking their works down or locking them to archive-only, I'm seeing some conversation here and there about "does it solve anything," "won't it make it worse?" and so on.
But that's not the point.
I mean yes, we as authors are trying to do what we can to minimize access to our works by people who are only there to take it and turn it around for their own profit. The binders and profiteers on Etsy selling fandom-based merch and bindings to make a profit while the people who actually wrote the stories get nothing, and who suddenly have to worry about litigation, because these people are drawing attention to the works we're creating in other people's intellectual paddling pools... those people are the problem.
But we don't have a lot of options as authors, and at the end of the day, we have to protect ourselves, and our hearts, and our minds.
That's really the crux of it. It's not just about flipping a switch and turning on or off your fandom works, that's the "easy" part.
It's about caring. It's about having poured your heart and your time and your love into this thing for free, in your free time, just because you wanted to share in the community of people who love the same things you do. It's about the energy you've spent. It's about the creativity and time you've poured into these works with no expectation of anything but maybe finding some other people who were hoping to read a story exactly like the one you happened to write.
When you come to a place for enjoyment and love and sharing, and it becomes a constant battle against bad actors who chip away at your faith and your love and your enjoyment, you stop wanting to spend your time there. That, at least for me, is what this is about.
It's hard to want to keep writing for a fandom when its worst actors are doing their damnedest to suck every ounce of joy from it. There are other fandoms, there are other outlets. There are things that I could spend my little free time on that won't feel like such a constant battle.
All this to say I don't blame anyone that's washing their hands of the whole affair. Riding off into the sunset with a pair of sunglasses on honestly feels like it would be freeing at this point.

I think the best way to protect our fandom is to stop talking about it everywhere.
I've deleted my Tiktok and Instagram accounts. From now on, I'll only be active on Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.
Keep fandom free. And don’t buy fanfiction

General Reminder for those consuming fanfiction:
If you download, print, bind, and then sell someone else's fan work - you are a horrible person.
If you purchase a bound work of fanfiction, you are also a horrible person.
These things actively hurt the protection that fanfiction has under Fair Use. If you see someone advertising bound fanfiction, report it to the seller website under copyright infringement and caution others about it.

just saw someone comment on a tiktok about the whole fanfiction thing "why is selling fanfictions bad" as a genuine question like what do you mean why?? fanfiction has and always should be a free resource, like any other fandom content. Plus how on earth can you ask why it's bad for these people to be profiting of other people's creative work??
I've genuinely had it with tiktok and the fandom culture because day after day people have less and less decorum and respect for fandom creators, be it writers, artists, or editors. Day after day more fandom work is being stolen from creators without an ounce of integrity.
I have spent a whole lot of my life participating in fandom culture and I can say that I have never felt like this before, absolutely gutted to see this happen to creators who have been kind and talented enough to provide more content for fans just to see some ugly prickly b*tches come in with their free-for-all post-it-and-pretend-it's-mine bullsh*t. I think y'all are disgusting, thanks for nothing but ruining the fandom experience for people day after day.

So, it won't stop the book binders, but if you're a fanfiction writer on AO3, ask them for a way to turn off downloads of your work or ask them how to do this (I just submitted this request myself). It's not foolproof, but if these binders can't download a nice, clean copy of the story that's easy to format without having to cut out logos or chunks of unrelated text or code, it might become too much effort for some of them. At minimum, it slows them down because they have to take more time to get a copy of the text in the first place.

You seek permission to use my artwork? Read on, friend!
My policy for using my artwork for book bindings is as follows:
I give permission for my work to be used ONLY for personal bindings and bindings intended as one-off gifts. I DO NOT give permission for my work to be reproduced in any way for profit. This includes, but is not limited to, bindings made for sale or other forms of distribution, even if the sale price only covers the binder’s material costs.
Basically, if any money is changing hands whatsoever, you do not  have my consent to use my work.
My policy for any public sharing of my artwork:
Please DO NOT post my work in other online spaces without my permission. Please DO NOT post my work separately on tumblr instead of reblogging. If you publicly share images of a personal bind that features my work, please DO tag/credit me in your post.
I won’t demand that every person who wishes to use my artwork for binding individually seek out my permission before doing so, but I’d really appreciate an acknowledgement in anything shared publicly. Partly because I just really want to see the beautiful things you make!
If anyone is unsure about whether their intended use falls within these parameters, my DMs are always open. :)
Closing Thoughts on Fan Works
Obviously, I am powerless to stop anyone taking my work and reproducing it without my consent. Such is the internet. I am sharing my fan art purely for the joy of participating in this community that I love. I am not here to in any way profit from that community, and I do not intend to ever hide myself behind a paywall or otherwise restrict access to my artwork. But online fan spaces, like all communities, require a degree of trust and mutual respect in order to survive.
We are so lucky to have spaces like tumblr and AO3, but we’ve already seen how a handful of bad-faith actors can undermine the integrity of these spaces, to the extent that authors and artists feel the need to withdraw entirely. By releasing our work into the world, creators are trusting that others will not take advantage of something they have given freely. So it’s hard not to feel a bit betrayed when people abuse that trust - and if that betrayal begins to erode the joy these interactions once held, then you start to wonder what it is you’re even doing here. What is the point in fandom if it’s no longer fun?
*anna has a mild existential crisis but it’s fine*
✨ Anyway, let’s keep fandom free and accessible for all! ✨

hi fandom folks: I'd like to explicitly state that I no longer allow binding my fics for commission. No money should be exchanging hands where my stories are concerned.
My full transformative works policy is here. Thank you in advance for respecting my wishes and keeping fandom free.

My work is being sold on auvexa. I do not and will never consent to this sort of thing and I unequivocally condemn anyone who would sell it AND who would buy it.
Do not fucking buy from these people.
Fandom should be free. End of. Do not give money for fandom works of any kind.
Report this shit please and help me out, would you?

A number of fanfiction authors are pulling their fics from Ao3 because people are illegally selling bound copies of these fics on etsy.
Pretty sure this hasn't happened to any of my stories. And I have given permission to folks to bind copies for personal use, which is perfectly legal and just and this post does not apply to those situations.
But this needs to be said:
If you are the kind of person who would download something from Ao3....bind it....and sell it on Etsy...you're dead to me.
The fact that people have the balls to take creative works that aren't theirs, that are provided for free to the world because of the joy it brings authors to share their stories with people who love the characters as much as we do, and turn around and sell them for HUNDREDS of dollars is gross and morally corrupt.
And the people who buy these copies, knowing they are putting the entire world of fanfic at risk, are just as bad.
It is ILLEGAL to sell fanfiction. It is immoral to buy it.
Fanfic exists in a liminal space where writers are protected because no money exchanges hands. The greed of a few is going to fuck it up for the rest of us. If you see bound fics for sale, please report the sellers.

I want. Four to get appreciation. Because
Four gave a ton of unnoticed help when Twilight was injured
The fight with Wild was difficult, and I know we're all concerned about his negative view of the shadow crystal
But Four did something that no one else really thought of to help- He took care of Twi's stuff
From the beginning he told Twilight to not worry about them
Tumblr media
So Four took care of pretty much everything but the others (that Sky and Wars handled)
He took care of Epona
Tumblr media
Which is so very important- he took care of Twilight's horse. After her arrival at the stable Four followed up on her
And for Epona, a horse so attached to her human, having some company can help so much for reassurance
He took care of Twilight's stuff
Tumblr media
He got Twi's shield- his bags and equipment, and organized it into one place
And he was worried. He obviously found the shadow crystal while handling Twi's stuff, but his negative reactions to it were out of concern.
Tumblr media
Also- because of his placement in this scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm fairly convinced Four was ready to start cooking before Wild showed up (since he's beside the counter with food supplies). At the very least he had the basket of fruit out for everyone -but he was literally standing with food behind him- he thought of everything
And he did housekeeping!
Wars payed for the inn, so Four took care of the inn
Tumblr media
Realistically these boys were probably not too concerned with tidyness. Four got all of Twi's things on one table, and took care of the room they stayed in
Tumblr media
Organizing tables and Twi's things, having food supplies ready, and opening the curtains- overall he was the one tidying up the inn
Four helped in a huge way! He took care of Twi's horse (Epona is so important), his equipment and shield and bag, as well as the other rooms in the inn
Four filled in all the little tasks that others didn't think of. He helped in ways that were needed, but not obvious
There's a lot of problems with the shadow crystal and with Wild, and I don't know what's gonna happen in the future
But don't forget this- don't forget that Four was one who stepped up in an almost unnoticeable way
Don't forget that when everyone was barely holding it together, Four visited Twilight's horse and took care of his things
No matter what develops in the future- this amount of care shown is important ya know?
.
Art and comic from Jojo @linkeduniverse au :)))
#epona is so important#Lu four#linkeduniverse#linked universe#I work with horses and#Epona is INCREDIBLE- she's extremely attuned to humans and emotions. she doesn't scare easily and can keep her cool in a fight#but it's still super stressful to suddenly be in a fairly large and populated town- separated from her person#and for such an empathetic horse? Four going and TALKING to her- gently petting her nose and just being near her#means so so much! that literally matters so much to a horses mental state in a foreign situation- just having company#he checked on Epona and gave her company like !!!!!! it's so considerate and means so much for Epona! Four I love you !!!!!#uhhhh yeah!#with the food- I don't think the innkeeper would have free/complimentary food out- but wars wallet def had it covered#then wild showed up with potions in a cooking frenzy- but four was still shown with food behind him- he thought of everything#I don't know what's gonna happen with the shadow crystal and stuff. but no matter what happens in the future- this matters.#he did a ton of small things no one else thought of it matters he cares so much didjdkdksjfjj#I have a lot of posts I'm making/editing and trying to get to. I'm just a little gal trying my best :/#so many ideas and so little time... I love you guys and this fandom so much :))#(if I said anything off or offensive let me know... I'm always nervous about that but I want to hear from you if I'm wrong)#(also you are so so cool and valuable don't forget that ok? I love you and you are important)#:)

“if readers take the time to leave comments on fics, then authors should at least take the time to reply.”
gently pats you on head. Babe. They already wrote the fic. For free. They gave you thousands of words to be judged and criticized. They don’t owe you anything on top of that.
