Do the people around you know what gyaru is? Everyone I know can recognize other j-fashion styles like lolita and decora but a lot have never heard of gyaru even from anime :/ Like you could be decked head to toe in d.i.a. and they would think you're dressing like Jersey Shore lol
Haha this is a great question 🤧
The reason why decora and Lolita are so well known (just my guesses) is likely due to a strong large community within the west (lolita in particular) from the ~2010s, along with Japanese celebrities/influencers that went viral for some time in the West (like Kyary PP or even Haruka Kurebayashi). And who could forget the “harajuku boom” (also) of the 2010s (Nicki Minaj, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, etc.) Those are my guesses as to why it’s that way but don’t quote me on this lmao.
TikTok has been a great way of popularizing gyaru style (for better or… worse) since 2020. It’s say in terms of awareness this is likely the best it’s ever been!! However, like any alt fashion, people think you’re weird for dressing that way, and like any j-fashion, people think your weird for dressing that way. As you’ve stated tho, due to similarities with 2000s fashion (NOT THE SAME THO) people tend to be more okay with this.
So the answer in short (TLDR):
From my experience, if they are into Japanese culture and/or fashion, do cosplay, or are from east asia, those people tend to be aware of what gyaru is.
The people who don’t know nor understand gyaru tend to be the following:
People from rural areas
Non-alternative people
Members of the older generations
People who are not knowledgeable about Japanese culture
Anime/manga fans with light knowledge on Japanese culture
What I always do when explaining to people who don’t understand, is just take the time to explain it throughly. If a comparison needs to be made, I’ll compare to goth ONLY BECAUSE they are very present in cartoons/animations as well but in the west. Goths are in cartoons but they are actual people with a subculture that has history; Just like gyaru does!

Trickle up effect
My example for the trickle up effect is Lolita fashion as I like the style and garments made, as personally I find it a Victorian take on fashion with ruffles, ribbon and lace. These dresses are handmade and each one different with patterns with a high waist skirt looks trending in Japan. Lolita style can differ from gothic, kawaii, pastels, and neutral. It started from teenage girls wanting a new take on adulthood with wanting to not grow up in standard working outfits wanting to stand out from the 'normal' street outfits. Many people see this side of fashion as dolls wear with the lace ribbon such as childhood dream pieces of clothing. Lolita originated from girls customising their skirts with ribbons with textile experience to stand out from the crowd and grew in Japan becoming a culture. To brands such as Milk a Japanese fashion store selling these Victorian styled dresses targeting schoolgirls with individual designed dresses with patterns or colours used on each piece to suit a client. Many celebrities found the style and liked it such as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga wearing the dresses styled as Lolita to sell albums in the 2010s. Consequently, Japanese catwalks started to present the style on catwalks with different takes of the style with Japanese designers presenting their work up to the present day. However, this design now targets everyone with a new culture of fashion known as Lolita.

I have chosen this video to present my ideas about of Lolita fashion to present my ideas with the effect of the trickle up effect with the catwalk side of this fashion. Overall, I found it very interesting and inspiring as it shows designers' concept of this fashion style compared to brands such as Chanel with more traditional and modern garments. So, I wanted to have a different style and take on fashion with an almost childlike fantasy inspired from the Victorian Era. I hope from my research many people will be inspired and see a whole new concept of fashion and how some seamstresses make alterations on their clothing to start off this trend and develop into so much more with celebrities to catwalks. Furthermore, I wanted to highlight the effects of Lolita fashion with hitting runways in Tokyo and Japan making a new culture and experience in the way people dress through times, even up to present times. Also, it shows an appearance on how viewers react with having a whole catwalk on Lolita fashion to show how it has grown even if some viewers may find them as ribbons and colourful patterns.

a spicy, fruity, sexy, and sophisticated (my bf literally goes feral when i wear this lmao) with key notes of luscious cherries, red peony, and sultry vanilla.

if you want to smell expensive and sexy this is it. if you know what the O.G. bright crystal smells like, that fresh, clean floral scent. then this perfume smells like that with a pomegranate and raspberry twist. i like this one better, honestly.

i absolutely ADORE this one. it’s a fun, flirty, fruity, floral, sweet gourmand fragrance with notes of cherry, sugar, cacao, almond, and vanilla. it is so intoxicating and is seriously an amazing cherry like scent.
6. meow! by katy perry 🍬
a flirty, fruity, gourmand, and fun scent. this fragrance has notes of pear, vanilla, caramel, mandarin orange, and very delicate florals. i personally think it also has a hint of cotton candy but that isn’t listed as a note. this scent is not very mature, but more lighthearted + girly!
7. live irrèsistible rosy crush by givenchy 🌹
this is the most perfect rose, florally perfume i have ever smelled. it is not overpowering, but is very obvious it is a floral scent. you’ll smell like an expensive bouquet of roses + a fruit arrangement.
8. garden by dolce + gabbana
this perfume is the perfect mixture of fun and sophistication with a floral+fruity scent background. with notes of coconut, neroli, vanilla, almond milk, and florals. it is super tropical but flowery at the same time.
