a Bellarke, Soulmates AU for my 1.5k Follower Celebration | rated: T | oneshot, wc: 10.8k | tags: modern au, soulmarks, bed sharing
Clarke desperately needs to get away. Mainly to finish her series of paintings, but also to nurse the sting of a still aching break up. It’s not easy having a soulmark and dating someone without one, so needless to say it’s an ugly breakup and she just wants to get over it. When Octavia offers her family’s small cabin to her for the week, Clarke immediately jumps on it.
Too bad Octavia forgot to run it by her older brother––who is also hiding out there to get his own work done after a bad breakup.
But maybe fate has a hand in things more than either of them are prepared to accept.

Voyager should have had an episode where the command trio beat the absolute hell out of each other while blaming each other for being stuck in the delta quadrant as the fever pitch of a rising tension that was building throughout the episode. Like, they're absolutely being pushed to do it by some outside force. Maybe it's a telepathic being - maybe it's that they're stuck in some arena or an alien court or a time loop only the three of them are aware of - no matter the specifics, the sentiment behind their words has to be true and it has to be something they've been keeping back for months, maybe years. That fear and hatred and blame that doesn't really have an actual target because it's not actually rational but 'who's to blame' doesn't have to be capital T true to feel true. If Chakotay hadn't been in the badlands, If Janeway hadn't made that choice, If Tuvok hadn't supported it... "You trapped us here. It's your fault. If you hadn't-! If you hadn't-! If you hadn't-!" are just echoes of "I trapped us here. It's my fault. If I hadn't-! If I hadn't-! If I hadn't-!" Because at the end of the day more than being angry or hateful they're despairing in their own ways. Episode probably has a somber end - they beat whatever it was and it's a victory! They won by working together even after they beat each other half to death! But after the celebration we see them alone in their quarters...silent. Gazing out at the stars, into a candle's flame, at that same family picture before turning away. Because even though they won they're still there in the delta quadrant. Is that really victory?

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you so much for tagging me, @divinemissem13! ❤️
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 127
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 660,997
3. What fandoms do you write for? Star Treks, mostly Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Picard, and Voyager.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Tuvok’s Secret (G): Tuvok has a secret — and he trusts only one person onboard to keep it. (Kathryn Janeway & Tuvok)
Feet on the Ground (G): Something solid slams into Kathryn’s back. She stumbles forward, bumping Mark, who in turn careens into someone else. Kathryn turns to glare at the probably inebriated party-goer who didn’t watch where they were going. But, instead, she looks up to achingly familiar dark eyes and the curves and lines of a tattoo that Kathryn spent the last eighteen months telling herself she didn’t miss. (Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway)
The Halo Effect (M): Tom Paris and Kathryn Janeway didn’t intend to fall in love. (Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris)
Fly Me to the Moon (E): Kathryn Janeway and Tom Paris never met each other years before Voyager. Never served on a covert mission together. Never fell in love. Never planned a future together. Nope, never happened. Because a secret like that could lead to some … complex dichotomies. (Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris)
Bad Ensign (T): Harry Kim finds out he missed out on an important part of the Starfleet Academy experience. Hilarity and dirty jokes ensue. (ensemble, friendship fic)
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes. If someone was kind enough to leave a comment, I’m going to thank them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I used to not know how to answer this question, but I recently got a kudos on Honey, I’m Home and while that story definitely isn’t “sit down crying” angst, I feel like maybe it qualifies? (Though In the Doorway might also fit under that criteria? Both stories are Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris, but they only get together in one of them.)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Either Feet on the Ground or Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love). Feet on the Ground has Janeway and Chakotay finding their way together after their Delta Quadrant trauma (note: Chakotay is afraid to leave the Sol system for fear of getting pulled into the Delta Quadrant again — Prodigy!Chakotay didn’t exist yet when I wrote that but, from what I’ve heard, he could possibly relate). Youthful Exuberance lets our heroes, Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley, have all manner of ups and downs, but the tags promise a 100 percent happy ending and I was determined to deliver.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not that I’m aware of, usually.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes. Vanilla because I find that interesting to write. (I’ll read all sorts of stuff.)
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I write crossovers within the Trekverse. The two craziest allowed Tuvok and Geordi LaForge to have tea together (Asunder [T] Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris) and Shannon O’Donnell Janeway to tell Benny Russell how much his writing has meant to her (Meeting of the Minds [G] Shannon O’Donnell Janeway & Benny Russell, Kathryn Janeway & Benjamin Sisko).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Other than by ChatGPT, not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, In the Doorway was translated into Russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, and am doing so again.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? NCC 1701
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? There’s one I technically finished about Tom Paris and Owen Paris in the aftermath of Owen’s beta canon torture by the Cardassians. But it’s really dark and I don’t know if I’ll ever edit or post it.
16. What are your writing strengths? Adaptability (to prompts), brevity, details.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I’m having trouble lately with voice and lack of vocabulary variety.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? If necessary, a beta fluent in the language can be very helpful.
19. First fandom you wrote for? I consider that to be Voyager, but recently reflected on an even earlier fandom for me.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? My most recent fic always holds a place in my heart, so Disarmed (Mirror Una Chin-Riley/Mirror Christopher Pike) is special to me, and also was an interesting mental stretch because I’d never before written sex that the characters think is good but I think isn’t good. But my all-time favorite? Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love). It’s my novel length love letter to Chris and Una, and it means a lot to me.
Tagging: Tumblr has been doing this fun thing lately where I don’t see posts from people I follow. So, if you actually see this, please consider yourself tagged with no pressure. Also, in addition to the wonderful people tagged by @divinemissem13, I’m tagging @grissomesque @fiadorable @emilie786 @genius2mania @lorcaswhisky @enterprise-come-in @marymoss1971 @sun-lit-roses @kejsarinna @iamstartraveller776 @isagrimorie @emonydeborah and the fantastic folks I’m not thinking of right now because I have tag anxiety.

Who are your Top 10 ladies of Star Trek? They can be from any and all shows, movies, or timelines.
Sorry for taking so long to answer this! I had to give it some thought, because Star Trek is full of wonderful ladies. Here it goes, and I tried to do it in reverse order but maybe it's not 100% exact and it will probably change in the future.
10. Erica Ortegas. I have a soft spot for pilots, and she's one of the best.
9. The Lady Grilka. She was only in one episode, but I adore the DS9 Klingons... and the first Klingon woman to have her own House deserves to be on the list. A complete badass.
8. D’Vana Tendi. My favorite Lower Decker and my favorite Orion, she's a ray of sunshine.
7. Uhura. Both versions, the TOS and the SNW ones. Just amazing.
6. Jadzia Dax. Gone too soon, I love her sense of humor.
5. Una Chin-Riley. The second season of SNW made her jump un several places on my list of favorites. Ad Astra Per Aspera!
4. Seven of Nine. I saw her go from the poor lost ex-Borg drone to space pirate to badass Captain, and it was magnificent. I may not agree with some writing decisions on the Picard series, but Seven is one of my favorites forever.
3. B'Elanna Torres. The best Chief Engineer anyone could want. She was so full of (mostly righteous) rage, and that resonated with me a lot the first time I watched Voyager back in the 90s.
2. Kira Nerys. Like B'Elanna, I saw myself in her a lot when I was a teenager watching the series. Outspoken and passionate, she was everything I wanted to be.
Top of the list couldn't be anyone else than than Kathryn Janeway. My girl, my Captain, my coffee-chugging idol. If I had to choose one Starfleet captain as my favorite, it would be her.
Thanks for the ask! You gave me something to think about today.

One ticket for… ABIGAIL (2024)
Directed by. Matt-Bettinelli Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Written by. Guy Busick, Stephen Shields
Starring. Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Giancarlo Esposito
Production Design by. Susie Cullen
I really like Radio Silence's work. Ready or Not (2019) was an instant classic and I couldn't see anyone else (other than Wes Craven) revitalizing the Scream franchise like they did. Now, I felt that Abigail would not be my thing after watching the trailer. That's okay! I still want to support the filmmakers and an original horror film. Also, vampires are cool as fuck. So I gave Abigail a shot!
I don't hate Abigail, nor dislike it, the film just didn't leave an impression on me. Again, that's okay! This is a good time to mention the philosophy behind this blog: you can find at least find one thing you like in every movie. I'll never review a movie I 100% hate, it's just not what I do. I love movies. I want people to go to the theatre! So, as always I'll focus on what I did love, even if it wasn't the film entirely.
The supporting cast was perfect. I enjoyed Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, and William Catlett way more than I thought I would. They were all hilarious, never missing a beat. Alisha Weir was a surprise! I find the "evil kid" stereotype can be hit or miss (mainly due to the writing, not the kid actors. I'll never blame the kids), but Weir brought a lot to this role. Especially to her scenes with Melissa Barrera. The two had a great, natural dynamic.
My absolute favorite part of this film was the production design by Susie Cullen. Radio Silence sure knows how to film a mansions. Or, their Director of Photography, Aaron Morton knows how to. Though, Morton did not work on Ready or Not, which also has a beautifully shot mansion. The mansion in Abigail feels like a maze- you're just as lost as the characters. I noticed that the windows, gates, doors, etc. were styled to look like teeth and open jaws, turning the mansion itself into a monster. The family crest (a dragon with it's tail wrapped around itself) was surely a direct reference to Count Dracula's crest from Bram Stoker's novel. The efforts of the design team clearly payed off.
If you love a blood-fest, this film is for you. The amount of splatter and gore is astonishing and I am here for it! Did you like the shocking yet iconic ending of Ready or Not? Than you'll have a blast with this! Literally. Radio Silence doesn't hold back, in fact they have stepped up their game, in Abigail.
A lot of people will like Abigail and I can see why. It is well acted, beautifully shot, and bloody as hell. There is a lot of fun to be had and honestly- it's just great to support the team behind this film (especially Melissa Barrera and Radio Silence). Go see Abigail this weekend, I'm curious to hear what you think!

20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag, @curator-on-ao3 🫶
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 46 works, but if you parse the three drabble collections and a ficlet collection it jumps up to 96.
2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 142,888
3. What fandoms do you write for? Star Trek Strange New Worlds, The Librarians, Once Upon a Tme, Star Trek Voyager, The X-Files (none on ao3), Harry Potter, and King & Maxwell
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? Where Flowers Bloom: The F*ck You Bouquet Once Upon a Time, SwanQueen, Rated T, 2.8k words Prom season is keeping Regina Mills, proprietor of Fairytale Flowers, busy, but when Emma Swan storms into her store one day with a unique request and a hidden connection, her day shifts from busy to odd to (dare she say it) hopeful.
revelation in the light of gray Star Trek Strange New Worlds, PikeUna, Rated G, 2.8k words Ensign Uhura stumbles into sickbay late one night and discovers something new about Captain Pike and Number One.
love is a ghost you can't control Star Trek Strange New Worlds, PikeUna, Rated T, 4.3k words One or two times Christopher Pike, uh, asked Una Chin-Riley about romance while they were both serving on the Antares. (This fic was inspired by and based on a scenario referenced in @curator-on-ao3's fic The Haze!)
Of Paperwork, Knots, and Warm Glowy Things, or, Roland Registers for Kindergarten Once Upon a Time, OutlawQueen, Rated G, 10.5k words Sometimes, Henry lets him sit on his bed with his old textbooks splayed open on his lap, the large tomes covering his legs as he runs his hands across the shiny paper, drinking in the bright pictures breaking up the dark columns of text. The older boy warned him he might not have hardbacked books like that until first grade, but Roland doesn't care. He's going to carry his own backpack and learn how to write and memorize all the names of all the bugs in this realm.
Trekalicious Drabbles Star Trek Strange New Worlds, PikeUna + La'an & Chapel + La'an & Una + Sir Adya/Z'ymria, Rated T, 2.1k words A collection of 100 word drabbles for the #Wednesday100 challenge
5. Do you respond to comments? I'm trying to! I'm very bad about doing it in a timely manner 🙈
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Oh, definitely the scorch. That piece is pure, distilled angst.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Of Paperwork, Knots, and Warm Glowy Things is pretty saccharine
8. Do you get hate on fics? Yeah, I attracted a few trolls with So Are We Alright Then?. Luckily they were no match for the almighty "delete comment" function. Most people are nice.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Eh? Kind of? Most of my stuff stays M or below.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I've done one: an ending unforseen, which is a crossover between Strange New Worlds and Voyager. I threw Christopher Pike into the Delta Quadrant on Voyager so he could have a chat with Kathryn Janeway.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yep!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? I can't pick a favorite, but I will say that Mulder/Scully, fanon Janeway/Chakotay, OutlawQueen, and Pike/Una have all been formative ships that I've enjoyed watching/reading/writing for over the years.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? First Day (Once Upon a Time OQ). 1 chapter published as a one shot that was received so well I turned it into a novel-length fic that was never published (19 chapters, 8 alternate universes visited, 40k words written with barely the surface scratched). I love it. It's my white whale. I open it up and marvel at the audacity and ambition of my younger self every now and then.
16. What are your writing strengths? Characterization, dialogue. Sometimes I concentrate hard and pull off some nifty minimalist prose.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Details and self doubt.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I'm not bilingual, so if I did, I would 100% run it by a native speaker if someone was available to spot check.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Either Voyager or X-Files, I can't remember which
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? I love writing the drabbles, they're little puzzleboxes of happy.
tagging: @enterprise-come-in and @meddow with apologies if y'all've been there done that

🍓🦷
Thank you for asking! (list of questions)
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?
Hah! Long story, I'll try to keep it short.
So I was never really *in* fandom, as a kid, teenager, adult - I knew that FedCon existed, as a German convention for Star Trek fans, and I knew there had been a letter-writing campaign for Star Trek in the 60s, but beyond that, fandom was just not on my radar, much less something I shared with others. I did not know that there was such a thing as fan fiction, either! 😱😅
I don't even remember how I learned about fan fiction, but I can tell you that I was in my thirties, because it happened after a breakup - I was deeply hurt, and found a lovely escape in marathoning Voyager. And for the first time in my life, I felt the urge to write something; a self-insert for Voyager, as it turned out. I joined AO3 in 2012, through the invitation queue because I didn't know a single person who was on AO3 and could send me an invite code. I started posting my fic there, and got lovely comments, and that repeated itself when I started posting Warehouse fic, but I still didn't really feel like I was part of fandom; the interaction I got there was such a small thing.
But yeah, back to fan fic: the impulse to write came because of escapism and a massive crush on Kathryn Janeway and my huge urge to write a self-insert that would put me on Voyager. The last piece of the puzzle happened when I read an official Voyager novel and found it so... well, not bad, but mediocre? that I remember to this day thinking "I can write better than that." Even as a non-native speaker, even as someone who hadn't really written a lot before. The amazement that someone had written this and got it published and got PAID for it, that was the last push I needed to write down my story myself.
🦷 ⇢ share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on
Oh wow! Deep question! I think the one thing that has always been my biggest help is the fact that I am on my own side. 100%. I might be miffed with myself at times, but I always know where that shit comes from, and I'd never put myself down. I've also seen this described as radical (self-)acceptance, and in effect in means that while the world might be shit, and life might be hard, at least I don't have to deal with being my own harshest critic, or constantly being dissatisfied with myself, or worse. I am in my corner. I *like* myself.
Star Trek has helped a lot with that; in two ways, both coming from awesome female characters: Deanna Troi telling her mom "I'll never be lonely; I'll always have myself," and Beverly Crusher telling herself "If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe." Those sentences and mindsets have stuck with me, and have given me a lot of self-confidence and self-worth.
The third bit of wisdom I gained from an Elder Lesbian, with whom I shared a hospital room after my very first ever heartbreak gave me gastritis: "If they don't want you, they don't deserve you." As in, don't fight to keep someone in your life who makes it clear they don't care about you. Let them go and good riddance. Including any sunk cost (see: Sunk Cost Fallacy) you have already put into that relationship. If they don't want you, they don't deserve you. Seek out those who *do* want you - and in the meantime, just like Deanna Troi, know that you'll always have yourself.
That was fun! I hope it is interesting to read too!

Hey, how many canon T1 diabetic characters do you know about?
I kinda wanted to challenge myself to make a character in art everyday with visual equitment, symbols maybe, and anything else I can think of.
That sounds like a great idea! Let me know how it goes please :D
So here are the ones I know from media I have personally read/watched:
Alec Holland from Swamp Thing: Twin Branches by Maggie Stiefvater, a DC comic book. Specified as T1D.
Blue Broen from The Truth According to Blue by Eve Yohalem, a middle grade adventure novel. (I'm only a few pages in but T1D seems well done.)
Brian (and Rufus) from Rufus Comes Home by Kim Gosselin, a children's book featuring Rufus the Diabetic Bear! (I still have mine on a shelf--along with Ruby! Although I renamed her Rosetta :P put pods on 'em and everything.)
Cassie Salazar from Purple Hearts, a 2022 Netflix Original AND a romance novel by Tess Wakefield (which I have NOT read). Specified as T1D.
Hansel (played by Jeremy Renner) from the movie Hansel & Gretel: Witchhunters. He has an inaccurate, anachronistic form of diabetes referred to as ‘sugar sickness’ but it’s one of my favorite movies. Besides, the movie also has an automatic machine arrow-gun. Realistic it is not. Fun monster movie, it is. I want to write a medical fix-it fic SO bad but I don't know when.
Mackenzie Nolan from Let Me List the Ways by Sarah White, a YA contemporary romance. Specified as T1D.
Sal Vidon from Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez, a Rick Riordan presents novel. Specified as T1D.
Stevie Hart from Lucky Few by Kathryn Ormsbee, a YA contemporary novel. Specified as T1D (but not until over 100 pages in :/ sorry I got personal beef with the book's rep but I saw a few people who liked it so... GREAT homeschooling rep tho)
Ones I have been reliably informed have T1D (or, you know, as close as we get) but have not personally read/watched:
Ezekiel from Agnes at the End of the World, a YA cult/post-apoc novel by Kelly McWilliams. Not sure if it's specified.
Captain Lantus from The Adventures of Captain Lantus, a children's book. Specified as T1D.
Kyle Broflovski and Scott Malkinson from the show South Park. I don't believe it's specified, and from what I've heard, SP makes fun of literally everything, but I know they've got a lot of fanfic in the ao3 diabetes tag!
Lucy Szabo from Sweetblood, a YA novel by Pete Hautman. Not sure if it's specified.
Dare Chase from The Girls Are Never Gone by Sarah Glenn Marsh, a YA horror fantasy novel. Not sure if it's specified.
Stacey Frick and one unnamed girl from Pixar's Turning Red movie. Both wear visible insulin pumps.
Stacey McGill from The Baby-Sitters Club, a middle grade series by Anne M Martin and a Netflix Original show. Specified as T1D.
Scott from Zebrafish by Sharon Emerson, a middle grade book. Not sure if it's specified.
Diabetes in Fiction is definitely worth a look. Their website sorts by both T1D or T2D and also by genre.
There are more lists here, but I haven't been able to verify them in any way yet:
a brief list and review of movies with T1D from DBL-diabetes
a brief list and review of shows with T1D from DBL-diabetes
An article from Healthline talking rep from both movies and shows
a rec list of kids books with T1D from the T1D Living blog
A list of children's books with T1D made by Disney and Lilly
A Goodreads list Romance Novels with Main Characters who have Diabetes
Another Goodreads list Fiction Books with Type 1 Diabetes
Yet another Goodreads list YA Books Featuring Type One Diabetes
Someone's pretty comprehensive Goodreads shelf of books that are supposed to have T1D
And another, smaller Goodreads shelf of T1D in Fiction
This was...probably way more than you need for your project, but I hope you find plenty of inspiration! (And new faves :D) I'm so excited to see what you come up with!

💯 (also hi we spell our name the same way!!!)
Ahh that's awesome! Twins!! Truly underrated way to spell it 🔥
Bellamy was often their drive home from practice, which Abby and Jake were more than happy with based on their overwhelming schedules. At first Clarke had resented being shuffled around, but soon the crackling leather seats and old radio of Bellamy’s truck became a cocoon of safety. You had to crank the window down by hand but it was always worth it for the way the wind would stream through it.
Send me 💯 and I will write 100 words in my current project and share my favorite sentence/section.

20 fic writing questions here we goooooooo
1. How many works do you have on AO3?: 100
2. What's your total AO3 word count?: 595,936
3. What fandoms do you write for? Star Trek Voyager primarily. I tend to be a one fandom girl.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?Unexpected (375)
Timeless Moments (282)
The Times They Are A Changin’ (275)
Pinewood (236)
Come Healing (212)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Not always. It’s a habit I really need to get back into.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
That’s No Way To Say Goodbye. It was written for the first Merry Month of Cohen Angst fest, and well… I killed Chakotay. 😬 But the story is really good though.
I think Repercussions comes in second because I basically left it with Kathryn not only moving out and separating from Chakotay, she was also having a recurrence of the nightmares from her torture by the Kazon.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I’ve written many a happy ending. I’m not sure what would qualify as “the happiest”.
Unexpected has a nice happy ending with the birth of baby Tuya.
Feeling Good with Kathryn and Chakotay retiring 25 years after Voyager’s return and becoming live in caretakers of Voyager as a museum. and 25 Years Earlier , the story of how Kathryn and Chakotay ended up married. Hint, there was copious amounts of booze involved.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I’ve not gotten outright hate on my fics. Just a comment about timing or how a character was treated, but they were never outright awful comments.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Not often. But when I do it’s more sensually described as opposed to explicitly shown. Certain euphemisms make me cringe and I’m not fond of blatant smut.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I’ve written crossovers throughout the Trek universe. I’ve got a couple off the wall ideas pondering. One being a Voyager/Gunsmoke crossover. That one is partially written. I keep going back to it and adding a few things here and there. Someday it will get finished. Lately I’ve been pondering a Voyager/Emergency! Crossover. Still working out the logistics of that one.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I’m aware of. I’ve had ideas or concepts stolen though, but I’ve never said anything because it will be denied and at this point it’s not worth the bother.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have not. No one has asked and I’d feel more comfortable with someone I know and trust doing the translation.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I’ve co written a few in my days. A few Lois & Clark stories with a friend of mine. A couple Voyager round robins.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Janeway/Chakotay. But I also ship Janeway/Chakotay/Ayala as an established throuple. I also ship Picard/Crusher, but haven’t written anything other than crossover.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Lord, I have so many. I hope to finish them all. 🤞🤞
16. What are your writing strengths?
Banter and dialogue. I’m also pretty good at creating realistic original characters/kids. I think I can also do really emotional free-writing styled one shots. I’m good at titles too. They tend to be my outline.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. I’m so bad at it. I often don’t have the words. But I am trying to improve and do better. I’m also bad at planning things out. I can’t outline to save a life. I don’t like how an outline makes me feel boxed in. I must write linearly as well. If I skip around the brain is like, ok, it’s done. And I’ll never actually connect the dots.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
If I’m comfortable with it and have done enough research to know it’s proper, I’ll write it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Lois & Clark The Adventures of Superman.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
That would probably be The Times They Are A Changin’. I’m super proud of how that story came out and I’m thrilled that people loved the outspoken and fiery adult daughter I gave Kathryn and Chakotay. Tananka was every bit her parents’ child.
Another absolute favorite is Solace. Because I was able put in words just exactly how I see Kathryn and Chakotay’s relationship and the depth of it.
I tag: @alexismusictrek and really anyone who wants to do this. 😁

this is a slightly random Q, but have you come across any romances with vampires or other immortals where the human love interest doesn't become immortal at the end? (and either that's just accepted OR the immortal becomes mortal?) I'm not necessarily looking to read them, just wondering if they exist - I haven't read a lot of paranormal romances but I've been reading a few recently and it's something that's occurred to me. I completely understand it as a writing choice bc the whole point is the paranormal element, but personally I just find the idea of immortality kind of depressing lmao so it never quite works for me
Yes! My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine. It's a vampire/human romance, very contemporary romcom. Super cute and funny. It ends with them knowing that's a convo for the future, but it's not resolved either way and she's still human; they're both happy.
A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Kathryn Moon maaaay have this. The heroine falls in love with like, several monsters, including a vampire. They all form a happy little polycule, lol. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think she's immortal at the end...?
Nora Roberts's Circle Trilogy has a vampire/human pairing as the last (and best) romance. There are three pairings, the story is all intertwined so you do have to read it in order. It's an old favorite of mine. I don't want to give away too much, but suffice to say, she does not become a vampire at the end. He's a formerly evil vampire (turned by the evil vampire queen villain, her former lover) who's still kind of an ass. She's a librarian (and queen) whose mom was murdered by vampires. She's also a virgin who can't drive (literally) who shows up in his room like "DEFLOWER ME" and he's all "Lord, please give me the strength to resist this nerd" (he does not get the strength). Cian and Moira really.... installed some buttons for me.
All the other vamp/non vamp books I've read feature a fellow immortal; and the human pairings end with the other one as an immortal.

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you for tagging me, @starrybouquet! ❤️
1. how many works do you have on Ao3? 123 works, including a fair amount of ficlet collections.
2. what's your total Ao3 word count? 649,427
3. what fandoms do you write for? Various Star Treks, mostly Voyager, Picard, and Strange New Worlds.
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
Tuvok’s Secret (G, Kathryn Janeway & Tuvok friendship, 535 words) Tuvok has a secret — and he trusts only one person onboard to keep it.
Feet on the Ground (G, Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway, 6,436 words) Something solid slams into Kathryn’s back.
The Halo Effect (M, Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris, 24,515 words) Tom Paris and Kathryn Janeway didn’t intend to fall in love.
Bad Ensign (T, Voyager ensemble friendship fic, 1,643 words) Harry Kim finds out he missed out on an important part of the Starfleet Academy experience. Hilarity and dirty jokes ensue.
Fly Me to the Moon (E, Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris, 25,117 words) Kathryn Janeway and Tom Paris never met each other years before Voyager. Never served on a covert mission together. Never fell in love. Never planned a future together. Nope, never happened. Because a secret like that could lead to some … complex dichotomies.
5. do you respond to comments? Yes. If people take the time to comment, I want to thank them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Possibly Secrets, Secrets Are No Fun (T, Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway, 12,793 words), a story I totally fucked up and have considered deleting multiple times. Or possibly In The Doorway (T, Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris, 850 words), a story I did not fuck up.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I write a lot of happy endings. I like happy endings. I’d need to list a bunch to be complete here.
8. Do you get hate on fics? I hope not.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes. Vanilla. With lots of feelings.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Yes. I’m not sure if this counts, but The Kelvin Scale (G, it’s complicated, 100 words) is a … unique … drabble in which Nyota Uhura sort of senses the Kelvin universe when she introduces Kirk and Spock in Strange New Worlds. I dunno. I was in a mood.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I hope not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, In The Doorway has been translated into Russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, and am working on another one.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? NCC 1701
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? A follow up fix-it to Secrets, Secrets Are No Fun. I have the concept but not the desire to write it.
16. What are your writing strengths? Brevity, details, and (I have recently been informed) technobabble.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Word repetition and an inordinate fondness for the em dash.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? There’s some dialogue in Spanish in The Monster (E, Kathryn Janeway/Raffi Musiker, 22,881 words) that I ran past a native speaker who gave great corrections. I think if it’s more than a few words, a native speaker can help with authenticity.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Star Trek Voyager.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Because my favorite is usually my most recently posted, for now, my favorite is Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love). (E, Number One | Una Chin-Riley/Christopher Pike, 95,132 words). That universe means a lot to me.
If you want to play, I hereby tag you! 🥳

Hi! For the writer’s ask 1 & 15?
Please and thank you!
Thank you, friend!
1. What’s your favorite part of the writing process?
-either the initial idea and thinking “ooooh this is good!” or the finishing off and seeing how the idea finally came together.
15. What is your favorite detail to include while writing?
-it depends on what fandom I’m writing for. For BSG, Laura humming. Voyager is Kathryn talking to her ship (which I’m trying to include more), and for Major Crimes, probably more humming but I’m not 100% sure. It depends on genre too.

Ad Astra News - 6/18-6/24
State of the Archive
Busy week this week!  We had a bunch of new people coming over and posting, others archiving older stories and a decent amount of very excellent discussion over on Discord.  Folks also seem to be falling in more comfortably with our posting/tagging rules, which is a great thing for archive searchability.  We do still have a Review Hunt going on for the next week, so your chance to win art and/or cash is still on the table, too!  Literally any review you write is eligible, so paste their links into the form as you write them!  Next month I'll be able to somewhat automate that process, but for now, this is what it's gotta take.
Weekly Challenge #10
For this week, write a story between 100 and 700 words about a sensory event or even just a day in the sun or rain. Can be extra-sensory, can be just plain old atmospheric, can involve any of the senses (and then some!) Interpret the prompt as literally as you like or a figuratively as you like, then submit your response to the Weekly Challenge Collection on Ad Astra: https://beta.adastrafanfic.com/collections/weeklychallenges Use the additional (freeform) tag Weekly Challenge: Sensory Processing Challenge closes on June 30th at 11:59P, Eastern.
