You are my stars...
Without my graphics tablet I had to use watercolors and colored pencils to spread my PikeUna love. I'm happy that it turned out better than expected after the sketch really challenged me.
Enjoy those two!

when people talk about ao3 and are like ohh its the gay yaoi porn website for 30 year old white women it makes me cackle because the majority of works on the site fall under teen or general audiences 😭
there's a literal 2 million work difference between those two combined vs the 3 other ratings combined

And she was afraid of something else that isn’t found in the Midwest … and she beat the phobia! From Good Shepherd:
JANEWAY: Maybe I do. When I was a girl, I was afraid of the ocean. I liked to swim, but in a pool or a pond where I knew exactly what was beneath me. But in the open water, with no way to know what was down there? It scared me to death. It wasn't until my first year at the Academy, after I went through zero G training in the Coral Sea, that I finally got over it. I think you just came up from your first deep dive.
Every time someone tries to tell Janeway that they've been through some scary bad weather, she's like, "That's nothing compared to Indiana!"

What this blog offers: fanfic, answered asks, and plenty of Star Trek stuff — especially Voyager and Strange New Worlds. Plus! Lots of love for Una Chin-Riley and Kathryn Janeway, among others, as well as occasional echoes of my Kirsten Clancy phase that led me to blog about her for Women at Warp.
What this blog will not have: antisemitism, anti-Christianity, Islamophobia, anti-Hindu, or content that diminishes or mocks any other peace-seeking religion — including atheists, Wiccans, and pagans. There also will be no queerphobia or transphobia, ableism, racism, sexism, ageism, or any other form of cruelty or discrimination including toward straight people or men. We all share the same planet so we’d better learn to be kind to each other. IDIC.
What I like: asks, thoughtful commentary, fanworks, funny stuff, the occasional shitpost.
Linky: my other online home is AO3
Welcome!

Some character asks if you want to pick a character (or mix and match):
Favorite canon thing about this character?
If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
A relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
Ooooh, thank you, anon! ❤️ Unsurprisingly, I want to answer for Una Chin-Riley.
Favorite canon thing about this character?
In terms of TOS, people say she’s unemotional — and I get that was the intent — but I actually love her emotion. I love how Chris reacts to her disappointment at being left off the landing party. I love her light sarcasm and irritation as she does the math on Vina’s real age. I love her defiance and general “do not fuck with me” energy as she sets her laser pistol to overload. She’s emotional while also being rational and smart. Absolutely brilliant.
In terms of Disco, I love how Una knows things she shouldn’t, how people owe her favors, how Chris trusts her to use her own methods to uncover the information they want. I love how she can predict what Chris is going to say and that she’s ready and adaptable for stuff because space is weird, man.
In terms of Short Treks, I love that she programmed the food synthesizers on Enterprise. Chris feeds the crew in his way and Una feeds the crew in hers.
In terms of Strange New Worlds, I love her longstanding friendships with Chris and La’an. I also keep friends for a long time, and it’s nice to see a character with that trait. I also like that she’s gained some level of acceptance for who she is, even though she shouldn’t have had to fight that fight.
If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
Despite the listing above, plus reams of beta canon, I definitely have additions! I wish she had been in more of TOS, of course, and I also think she should have been in AOS … depending on what they would have done to her. (My trust isn’t the highest on that.)
A relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
I admire how Una made clear her regrets and her willingness to do what she could to mend things in terms of her relationship with Neera. It’s complicated because their culture is alien and Una both benefitted from and was hurt by the hiding her parents chose to begin … but sometimes feelings need to come out so truth can be ascertained. And I really, really admire how Neera and Una both began to unpack feelings and truth to find their way back to some form of a positive relationship with each other.
If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
Oh, man. I just checked and I have 26 fics for which Una is a tagged character. So, yeah, I love her, your honor. I suppose my favorite thing to do is to just let that love (hopefully) shine through. She’s flawed, as we all are. She’s also smart and loyal and strong and sassy … and fun to explore from a characterization standpoint. I wrote one fic in which she didn’t make a pass at Chris years before because she assumed he wouldn’t be good in bed, and he is kind of repressed so they’ll work on that. In my current WIP, Una is reasonably sure physical compatibility won’t be a problem with Chris but this time she’s the one who’s repressed — emotionally — from keeping her secrets for so long, so she and Chris need to fix that up. Flipping around inverse possibilities for different fics can be fun.
Something I don’t like? Ten episodes a season.

Love both TNG and VOY. But Voyager has that lil' strain of "we're almost certainly going to die out here, but at least it'll be rad" that's just so appealing to me

This concept has been rotating in my brain since OP first posted. And I’m still going to fuck it up. But please bear with me.
There’s this moment in “Hope and Fear” (no time to rewatch, going off memory here) when Janeway and Seven agree to a plan and, as part of this plan, Janeway needs to access Seven’s eyebrow computer. So Janeway has a filament in her hand and moves to carry out this part of the plan by poking at Seven’s ocular implant (aka eyebrow computer). And Seven flinches. There’s no dialogue at this point, just Seven’s clear trauma that she’s about to be accessed like a drone, even though Seven agreed to the plan. Because that’s how trauma works. And Janeway (again, no dialogue) backs off, shows her hands including her hold on the filament, and gives Seven a moment to collect herself before they try again because they need to do this thing to escape.
And I just … goddamn.
The empathy, the care, the concern, the unspoken acknowledgment and honoring of trauma yet they have to go ahead and do this thing so Janeway will do it as gently as possible.
So, yeah, no dialogue. Not really a quote.
But I keep thinking about it in terms of this post.
Oh Captain, my Captain.
Everyone reblog this with your favorite Janeway quotes, please. 🖖

Some more asks stolen from an ask game if you fancy any of them:
What is your perfect writing envrionment?
What are your top three most commonly used tags on AO3?
What's something you learned while researching for a fic?
Thank you for the ask, anon! ❤️ These make me so happy.
What is your perfect writing envrionment?
Quiet. So much love for y’all that write to music or in loud environments. But, as much as possible, I need quiet to be able to write.
What are your top three most commonly used tags on AO3?
I checked and, yeah, this tracks:
Tumblr media
What's something you learned while researching for a fic?
I learned a shit-ton about DNA and recovery from bodily immobilization and lack of ability to speak when I was researching The Wounds, They Run Deep, But So Does the Healing, My Love, So Does the Healing (TMP era Christine Chapel/Christopher Pike, E). Also in researching that fic I was reminded of something I already knew: The death of premature baby Patrick Bouvier Kennedy “sparked medical advances that did for the survival of preemies what Sputnik did for the space race.” (source: https://abcnews.go.com/amp/Health/jfk-baby-death-50-years-ago-today-sparked/story?id=19883153) One person’s suffering can galvanize others to take positive action, so believing that Chapel would apply her knowledge about genetics to help cure Pike’s delta radiation damage that we know from Lower Decks canon can be treated at The Farm … well, I wrote a lot with tears in my eyes for real people and real conditions.

Deeply dispiriting post: testimony from a DOJ antitrust action reveals the entire book publishing industry is celebrity memoirs, established franchise authors like James Patterson, children's books, Bibles, and back catalogues (e.g. Lord of the Rings). Publishing new authors is not even a rounding error; you get the sense it's only done anymore out of a vague sense of obligation, and the moment one of the Big Five decides on the defect strategy, and stops doing that to save a few more bucks, it will end entirely.

Ahhh, I am so touched and excited!!! Thank you so, so much, @pc-corner!!
Y’all, when @pc-corner said she would draw anything Pikeuna that I wanted from any of my stories, that moment of Chris joyfully looking at the picture of his wedding with Una was the first thing I thought of … but I wanted to give @pc-corner a few options just in case. When she chose that one, my heart fluttered with happiness. 💕

Since Ao3 has temporarily disabled guest comments due to very mean and pornographic bots, now is a very good time for 1) readers with Ao3 accounts to comment on the fics they love and cherish to make up for those who cannot leave guest comments and 2) readers without Ao3 accounts to join the waitlist and make an account!

Lots of people are mentioning this, and saying things like "Don't Like Don't Read" and "stop harassing authors."
And while those are good points...
This is probably a bot invasion, rather than any team of hostile commenters.
The key issue: People were getting comments with porn gifs embedded in them, not just the standard "this reads like chatGPT work" or "join WəɓṆøvℯḼ now!" posts.
My guess about the plans: Probably looking into turning off image embeds for guest accounts. That'll require adjustments to the code, so guest commenting will probably remain turned off while they figure out how to do that and get it activated.
It's possible that, in the long run, guest comments won't be allowed at all, because eventually the spam content will overwhelm the servers. It's not doing that yet, but AO3 is not shrinking and neither is bot activity.
...If you don't have an account, apply for an invitation. If you have an account and don't want to use it for commenting, apply for an invite with a secondary email account.
Because unless there's a nice widespread change in either law or legal rulings, the spambots will continue to grow unrestricted, and the result is going to be "sites that want an active community will need to become login only."
(About half of all emails in the world are spam. About 40% of all internet activity is bots. And so far, the regulator reaction to that has been, "well, lock down access so the bots can't get in" rather than "whoever is draining all those server resources is committing crimes.")
AO3 will figure something out. That something is likely to involve restrictions on guest activity, because that's the only way to block the bots.
