One of my finals project.
Kapres are mythical creatures that hides up in the tree and and tricks people by giving misdirections.
Their appearance are somewhat bigger than an average human body, very huge, strong body odor,
And they would always smoke from a from a cigar thats big enough for them.
There was also a story about a kapre who falls in love over a gal and watches her grow up from afar.

The Kapre of Balete
Legend from The Island of Mindoro
One moonlit night in the barrio of Balete the woman of the house heard an eerie sound never heard before. The sound came from the backyard which was planted with tall trees. Overcome with fear the woman did not dare to find out what it was. The following night the same noise coming from the same direction was heard again. The mother felt alone for no one else in the family was awake. Through a slit on the door she peeped to find out if their dog was around, for if there was really nobody coming, the dog would bark. The dog was under the stairs but it had remained silent. After some moments, the dog whined long and loud. This awakened and scared all the other members of the household. No one dared to go out to find out what it was. The next morning they found the dog gone. It could not be found in the whole vicinity. The next evening while ironing some clothes, the woman was alarmed to find a handful of soil laid on one end of the ironing board. Who could have placed it there? Again she heard the weird sound. This time she mustered enough courage to peeped through a small opening of the window facing the backyard. There she beheld a bearded man of enormous size as black as coal. He smoked a roll of tobacco as big as a banana trunk with thick smoke coming from a chimney. His large eyes seem to be focused on her. She woke up her companions and peeped again. The creature was gone. What the woman saw was believed to be a kapre. Not long after this incident the family abandoned the place and settled in another barrio. From Philippine Folk Literature Series: Vol. III, The Legends (2002), compiled and edited by Damiana L. Eugenio, published by The University of the Philippines Press (shopee, amazon)
Mod's Annotations:
The word "kapre" had originally come from the Spanish "cafre" and often referred to Muslim infidels which incidentally had actually come from Arabs that referred to Christians as "kafir" or Christian infidels. There's a good chance that the current understanding of what a kapre is may had also been influenced from racially prejudiced stereotypes of not only Muslims but also the dark-skinned Negrito indigenous groups of the country that was spread among the Hispanicized Christian population of the country (Tan, 2008).

There are many places in the Philippines where sightings of local cryptids are often talked about, the City of Muntinlupa is no stranger to it. Here are artworks of known cryptids in Muntinlupa with a millennial twist, as seen in Museo ng Muntinlupa page.

The Tikbalang - is probably one of the most popular mythological creatures in the Philippines. According to stories, these beings have half-human, half-horse bodies. It has two versions: one with a horse's head and the other with a human-like face. Based on folklore, whoever rides on the back of the tikbalang and manages to pull out its golden hair from its nape will be able to tame it and serve as its master. Despite their powerful and fearsome appearance, tikbalangs do not harm or kill people. They simply enjoy leading or playing with people in the forest.

The "Nuno sa Punso" - are said to be old men with long beards. Their height is likened to that of a three-year-old child. According to other stories, the "nuno" are depicted wearing wide-brimmed hats called "salakot." The "nuno sa punso" are known for inflicting illness upon those who disturb their dwellings. Typically, this results in high fever, severe body pains, and swelling of private body parts.
Tumblr media
The Sirena - In legends and on television, mermaids are commonly depicted as beings with beautiful and gentle faces, long hair, glistening skin, and a melodious voice. They are considered guardians of the seas, and whoever disturbs their domain will be punished and dragged into the depths of the ocean. Their enchanting voices attract men, and this is what they use to lure those they fancy into their world. In The City of Muntinlupa, there are often folk stories about mermaids being sighted in Jamboree Lake.
Tumblr media
The "Tiktik" - belongs to the family of "manananggal." They are commonly depicted as creatures resembling birds that only fly at night to seek food. It's also believed that their color is as black as crows. They are known to favor consuming babies from pregnant women's wombs. The "tiktik" got its name from the sound it makes. When you hear its loud screech, you can be sure that the "tiktik" is still far away. But as the sound gets softer and softer, the "tiktik" is getting closer to you!
Tumblr media
The "Kapre" - typically resides in trees and forests. It's said that they often play tricks on people who find themselves near their dwellings by suddenly misleading them in the woods and mountains. Kapres are described as large, man-like beings covered in dark hair. Some say they are only clad in loincloths, while others claim they are naked and that only leaves cover their private parts. They are often depicted carrying tobacco, the scent of which tends to attract people's attention. When a Kapre is attracted to a woman, he befriends her and follows her for life.

For #FilAmHistoryMonth and #Inktober I thought I’d learn about Philippine mythology using the #Engkantober prompts @malamaya.Noel put together a few years back! Third is a Kapre - the source of my username 🥭 This dude (affectionate) is like if bigfoot was a massive stoner, but instead of being weary of embers dropping from his towering toking each puff produces fireflies! If you find a Kapre in a Kawayan (bamboo), Mangga (mango), Akasya (acacia), or Balete (banyan) grove beware, they’ll get you lost in the grove and only let you return once you steal the tiny pearl they carry.

Why I Love Writing Plays #10: FANTASY
Tumblr media
There's one school of thought of being able to write the craziest fantasy worlds in your head, get them on paper, and have them somehow come to life on a stage. From having a bare-footed character intentionally drop a glass pitcher of water on the ground and have them walk upon the shards of glass leaving a trail of blood to opening up a barn door to a blinding light after two filipino cowboys escape a chasing spanish armada. The freedom to write something fantastical is an incredible space to be in... now to find the people who can make those worlds appear, that's the trick.

🦇🎃🧡💚Halloween romance, but with no intestines attached? 👀👻 Here's my full illustration of 2 Filipino mythological creatures, the Kapre and Manananggal. Kapre didn't realize he went out with a manananggal. 😱 He should've asked for a full body photo first before going on a date. 😂🤳 #creatureart #creaturedesign #spookyart #philippinemythology #filipinofolklore #kapre #manananggal #vampire #spooktober #halloweenart #digitaldrawing #digitalart #animationart https://www.instagram.com/p/CkNvzx4LgTp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
