honestly everyone keep talking about how close to canon sasunaru is but i’ve literally never seen people talking about masterpiece like kakairu.
So; PART ONE of my favourite gay dads.
Tumblr media
iruka is blushing while he’s talking to kakashi
Tumblr media
oh wait, in the manga they’re both blushing
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure he had his bisexual awakening at this moment
Tumblr media
His crush is following him, oh no
Tumblr media
Kakashi being touchy around Iruka is probably my favourite thing and this isn’t even the best moment of it
Tumblr media
lady tsunade knows
Tumblr media
OH DAMN SHE DEFINITELY KNOWS (it’s official art btw)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
talking about official art I’m gonna just leave my two favourites… Look at the proud dads spending time with their children 🥺
Tumblr media
PAIN ARC— LIKE— Kakashi literally— I cried so hard and so much at this point. God, bless them.

when people talk about naruto's repression they kind of miss a crucial element which is that it actually makes complete sense.
firstly from the power perspective, simply put, by its very nature he requires repression to function on a most basic level. this is opposite to the sharingan, which thrives on huge displays of emotion. im going to assume that the reason this is missed is because it runs counter to the personality traits each character is known for: the "emotionless, calm and cool" one actually is constantly accessing and expressing the most powerful of emotions, and the "expressive, empathetic and emotionally honest" one is actually warring with letting true emotions come to the surface. comparatively, when you look at starfire and raven from teen titans, you see that their personalities reflect their power. starfire is bright and expressive because thats how she best accesses her powers, and raven is subdued, controlled and calculated in order to control her powers. this means that contrary to popular belief, naruto isnt starfire-- naruto is raven. there are actually a few moments where you are subtly shown just how calculated naruto's displays of emotion are, and how they are reinforced in such a way (context is naruto being saddened that his request for parental affection was rebuffed):
Tumblr media
which brings me to my second point: socialization. this part is straightforward. from itachi actively causing and incentivizing hatred and anger, to various mentors/people of influence (eg. kakashi) remaining silent at clear expressions of violent anger-- these negative emotions are not punished or discouraged when it come to the context theyre in. why? they are beneficial to the agenda of various characters. the revenge plot only starts being punished when its disadvantageous to the state. remember that there is a monetary value attached to the murder of itachi uchiha, and this is actually a common way to earn money. when you look at naruto, there is never a single instance when naruto is encouraged or even tolerated for having these emotions. the only exception who does this leaves him due to their own parallel struggle (side note: this is why naruto distinctly says the reason for his obsession is that this person accepted him more than anyone else, given this person is the only one who saw naruto's pain and anger and actually blamed his aggressors for it). naruto, raised implicitly to know that everyone seeks to be a tool of the state, and that in his case this is not just a choice but a requirement for his humanity. iruka's acknowledgment of naruto comes with an indication of possession, implying conditionality. people like kakashi, hiruzen, and others in positions of influence witness the abuse he faces, and ignore it or groom him into accepting the idea that he should appeal to his abusers for eventual acceptance. naruto meets gaara, someone with the same condition as him, but with radically different circumstances. whereas naruto's condition symbolically papers over his pain over time, gaara's is self-protective and defensive against his pain. gaara also occupies a position of power as the member of a royal family, and has siblings who are afraid of him but do hold some level of affection towards him. gaara's feelings of loneliness, while rational, come from a different place than naruto's. for gaara, he is surrounded by community that he doesnt know how to access. naruto has no community, he needs to find a way to forge one, but even when he does it is superficial. this dynamic is repeated in his introduction to killer bee, who from an early age is granted family and institutional protection. this isnt to say that the treatment of jinchuriki is ethical or healthy, but that naruto's situation is actually uniquely oppressive. kushina is the closest naruto gets to someone who validates this pain, but she cannot truly relate to him because she is never cripplingly alone (again, not to say her life was not difficult or oppressive or traumatic) and the object of her affections returns those feelings consistently and early on. naruto's trauma is thus compounded over and over by the conflict his need for his specific love interest causes: naruto is only tolerated as a weapon of the state, and in order to be an effective one he needs to love and be loved, but his love interest who allows him these negative emotions is an enemy of the state, leading to further isolation/tension from the state and pushing him towards the love interest.
as such, i actually think naruto does remarkably well at balancing this conflict and tension in a way that keeps him functional. though, obviously and eventually the compounding of his trauma and the repression of his pain is something that needs to be addressed. the only person who is capable of doing this in a way that puts naruto's wellbeing first ("when i saw you in pain...i also felt pain" and the subsequent frequent moments of protection and defence) only reunites with him at the end of the manga, so you never get to see that actually happen.
im assuming the reason why a lot of this is missed is partially because through framing this repression as positive through the majority of the manga (aside from naruto's own personal thoughts), the reader is never really forced to decide how they feel about the concept unlike the inherent conflict of the radical revenge plot. the other part is the grander, underlying allegory in the naruto story which is the varied manifestations AND expressions of trauma. through readers' responses and attention to certain individuals in the naruto story, you can learn how they relate to and look at trauma. to me, naruto himself is actually the example of a trauma victim who shows a brave face and thus isnt recognized. naruto is the woman who puts on makeup to cover the bruises to go to work a day after she is assaulted. who tells herself that she must have some part in it, so it isnt abuse. maybe she grew up in a family where no one answered when she cried, so she learned to keep it moving and stop crying.
lastly, on a greater scale, people also forget a crucial aspect of "yin/yang" is that things with a large properties of one, by nature will also come with a small amount of the opposite. thats what the smaller inner dots represent.
Tumblr media
a more surface level example of this is that naruto's face is brash, large, and masculine-- these are yang traits and they are predominant in his appearance. however, looking closely at his rounded cheeks and eyes and the soft nature of his eye colour, there are subtle yin elements. naruto's "positivity" or "optimism" is fueled by a certain level of negative repression.

Some stuff that could have happened that would have affected the Konoha 12 before they were even the Konoha 12 we know:
Naruto could have become a missing min after Mizuki told him about the kyubi decree.
Tenten could have left to become Tsunade's apprentice outside of Konoha.
Shino could have ended up in Root, instead of his brother.
Sakura might have not entered the Academy and kept being bullied, if she hadn't met Ino.
Rock Lee might not have made it so far if he hadn't met Gai sensei.
Ino could have been best friends with other kunoichis with different talents.
Sasuke could have grown up with his family intact if Shisui and Itachi had found a way to make their plan work.
Hinata could have been murdered as a kid instead of being simply kidnapped.
Hiashi could have been the one killed to free Hinata, so Neji would have grown up with his dad and Hinata and Hanabi being closer (?)
Kurenai could have stayed a chuning and someone else could have taken her place as a sensei (who knows who...)
Kiba could have been assigned to Kakashi's team.
Other alternatives:
Naruto could have grown up with both his parents alive and not being a jinchuriki.
They could have stolen Hinata's eyes when they kidnapped her.
Neji could have gone a missing nin after they sacrificed his father.
Ino could have been mean and part of the group of girls bullying Sakura.
Sasuke could have died during the Land of the Waves mission.
Sakura could have grown full of hatred and rage and wishing vengeance from all the bullying of her childhood.
Rock Lee could have died during the surgery, as Tsunade warned him so, sending Gai into depression or even suicide.
Tenten could have stayed a civilian instead of joining the academy.
Shikamaru could have made it to anbu still as a kid if he had been motivated enough.
Mizuki could have been their primary sensei instead of Iruka.
Sai could have been part of the Konoha 12 since the beginning.

Iruka 100% was suppose to have a more screen time in Naruto. The amount of official art he is in and how he is represented in them is extremely weird.
look at this shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is this dude here??? Its whiplash from seeing him in the anime/manga to the official art. Why did Kishimoto drop Iruka so quickly when he obv wanted him to play a even bigger role
Iruka doesnt spend all this time with team 8 or 10?? So it wasn't like he was like this with the whole graduating class.
I wonder if he was just used as a placeholder, since Naruto had so little adults near him. But why not use the 3rd hokage?? Was Iruka and kakashi suppose to be best friends or something or co-parenting team 7??
I honestly wish kishi would have went with whatever the official art is showing.
(I think there was one where iruka was holding one of kakashi's ninken. Cant find it tho)

@thecopynin-kakashi
In the months that followed both Kakashi's reinstatement as a Konoha shinobi and Naruto's return, team 7 was reformed with a new member and missions were back in full swing. They'd been given several precious weeks together though, enough time to get Kakashi's family home fixed up and for Iruka to move out of his little apartment. He hadn't lived in a house since the kyūbi attack had destroyed the one he'd lived in with his parents. It was nice. Things were going good. They were making the space their own and Kakashi kept his promise to keep coming back when he did start taking missions again.
He couldn't help but feel like something was coming though. It left him feeling unsettled for weeks and despite trying to talk himself out of being paranoid, he was proven right when Pein attacked looking for Naruto.
They were supposed to be safe in the village. He always laughed off Kakashi's concern to look over his shoulder because he was gome and gome was safe. He regretted it. He should apologize but he didn't think he'd get a chance to now, finding himself in a very vulnerable position. Having pulled another shinobi out of some rubble, Iruka positioned himself as best as he could to protect the unconscious man from the Akatsuki member staring him down.
He was asking about Naruto. His student. Brother. His kid. Like hell he was going to say anything and said as much. Defiant till the end. He was going to die there and he knew it. His only regret was that he knew how this would affect Kakashi.
'Kakashi-- I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry.'

Hatake Kakashi is an alpha Shinobi who has accomplished beyond his years. His failures are few but great in weight. Most recently, this resulted in the scattering of his students, each taking to a new teacher more suited to their liking. With his hands empty, he returns to what he knows best, working like he has nothing to live for.
Iruka left active duty years ago, staying comfortably in his Chunin rank to support the village from within. After a troubled childhood that left him out in the cold, he turned his poor coping choices inward and worked on crafting the perfect omega persona. A golden Academy teacher beloved by students and parents. A busy worker inside the Hokage tower, respected for his efficiency and Take No Shit attitude. A seal master who spends summer breaks crafting porcelain masks below ground.
When both have cast aside romance with apathy or rage, the simple scents of Lavender and Bergamont are the deciding factor.
Kakashi is left with another failure on his hands, dragging another good soul down with him. Iruka is panicking as his careful facade is pulled away.
What happens when an Alpha Nests?

Brief Description:
Kaori has reddish-pink hair and pink eyes.
Her academy grades were nothing to look at, with Lee being the only one who scored worse than her during their graduation exam. She has very low stamina, and has little strength. She tries to push herself though, which causes her to pass out often. What she lacks in physical strength, though, she more than makes up in her ability to use Genjutsu. Poisons and Senbon are also incorporated in her abilities, to make her jutsu that more deadly.
Kaori is short-tempered, but it mainly stems from a lack of self esteem in herself. Hates talking about it, so if she's opening up to you, you're special no doubt about it. Really admires Rock Lee and his constant determination and positive outlook on life. Strives to also be like that, but it's hard to change her ways. Will mellow out a bit as she gets older.

Naruto fandom is so funny.
They can forgive Obito for murder, causing a war, forming a terrorist organisation, being responsible for multiple deaths including Naruto's parents.
They can forgive Gaara for killing innocent people, attempting to kill Lee, Sasuke and Naruto.
They can forgive Nagato for destroying Konoha and killing people.
They can forgive Sasuke for betraying Konoha, joining a terrorist organisation, trying to kill Naruto, Sakura, Karin and Kakashi (who all just wanted to help him, mind you).
BUT they cross the line at Sakura being ‘annoying’ and Hinata for falling in love with Naruto. It's ridiculous how these two girls are hated for completely stupid reasons but the male characters who did worse than them always get away with bullshit.
Naruto and Sasuke fighting each other to death and losing their arms is ‘Epitome Of True Friendship’. But Sakura hitting Naruto for slapstick comedy (which doesn't even give him actual wounds) is ABUSE?!?!?!?
Hinata willing to die to protect Naruto and bravely fighting an enemy 10x stronger her than her is ‘selfish’ and ‘useless’ but other characters (Iruka, Sasuke, Minato, Kushina, Tsunade) doing the exact same thing is bravery, love and selflessness.
Sakura forgiving and loving Sasuke after he pushed her away and tried to kill her (2/3 times she attacked him first mind you) is ‘stupid’ and ‘fangirl’ but Naruto chasing after Sasuke more than Sakura and Sasuke hurting him and pushing him away more than what he did to Sakura is ‘best friends’.
Hinata watching Naruto train few times because he inspires her to be better and stronger is ‘creepy’ and ‘stalkerish’ but Jiraiya peeking at women's bathroom without consent and drooling over Naruto's sexy jutsu form (who's an underaged girl by the way) and involving Naruto (a minor who was not even 13) in his peeking is ‘peak comedy’ and ‘haha so funny’.
Hinata and Sakura having unrequited feelings for Naruto and Sasuke is ‘obsessive’ but Obito choosing the path of destruction because his unrequited crush died is ‘true love’. Atleast the girls never killed people over their crush and yet they're hated but Obito is praised huh?
Stop holding female characters to such high standards if you can't keep the same energy for the male characters.
Also to clarify, this is NOT a criticism of the other characters and their actions.
Naruto's shinobi world is entirely different from our world, a lot of fucked up things which aren't acceptable here are the norm there, that's why forgiving all the bad stuff which I mentioned above is normal by their standards.
However I'm criticising the fandom who understands the working of the shinobi world when it comes to the male characters but suddenly becoming a moral police and expects Sakura and Hinata to be perfect and not make a single mistake at each and every step, while characters who did worse are fine to them.
I'm criticising the fandom who holds the women to such a high standards.

Naruto the Ramen Man
This is an au idea that has been rattling around my brain long enough that I had to drop it here or risk swelling from it bouncing off my grey matter like a ping pong ball.
In another universe, Teuchi is actually the first good connection that Naruto has. In that universe, after leaving the orphanage, Teuchi takes Naruto in and begins teaching him the family trade, even offering him the his last name Rachi, which Naruto happily accepts becoming Naruto Uzumaki Rachi. Iruka comes into play earlier here as he sees Naurto behind the counter and goes through his little crisis over the nine-tails. Therefore, by the night of the Uchiha Massacre, Naruto has a makeshift little family. Afterward, Iruka and Teuchi are scared, and Iruka, having the ear of the Hokage, knows a very minimal bit about what this all means but homes in on the idea brought up that Naruto should begin his training as a Ninja earlier now that Konoha is missing a major power. Horrified, Iruka goes to Teuchi and with Ayame come to the decision to make Naruto disappear.
In the chaos the Massacre creates, Iruka is able to slip in and fudge the paperwork with no one the wiser, changing them to show that "Naruto" was staying with another family. Thus some other blue-eyed blond-haired kid "becomes" the Jinchuuriki. Even the name Naruto is easily forgotten as the only ones at this point that know his name outside the family are really just Kakashi and the Hokage. To the rest he is just he Jinchuuriki.
Anyway, the paperwork gives them time to sneak Naruto out, who is more than happy to comply as rather than a ninja, he dreams of being the greatest (ramen) chef. Teuchi leaves Ichiraku to Ayame and takes Naruto out of Konoha to the capitol of the Land of Fire. There he sets up another restaurant but focuses on trying to gain enough renown and following to make it into the Daimyo's favor and court.
At this point I'm not quite sure what happens. I think that maybe Teuchi gains favor but not enough to serve in the Daimyo's court and Naruto makes it his dream to someday serve food there as the favored chef. In Konoha, I think that Iruka is playing 3d shogi with the paperwork, and managing the human element best he can. He successfully 'frames' some other kid as the Jinchuuriki, which he feels bad about, but this kid already has a support system and Iruka looks after them as well. Ayame takes over Ichiraku and it continues to grow. Once a year or so, she hires Iruka for a C-rank to escort her to the Capitol to visit her 'aging father.'
I was thinking that maybe Asuma would have met Teuchi in the Capitol, but they would likely have just missed each other as he returned to Konoha following the massacre. To clarify, the paperwork shogi only works because Teuchi has kept Naurto away from the masses and only the old orphanage director would probably know the difference. I also think Teuchi stepped in before Naruto was given the apartment and the Hokage became more involved with his life. So the police have all these files on the Naruto Situation, but otherwise it isn't really public knowledge. So Iruka can easily slip in and alter the files to say another family took in Naruto and Teuchi is only noted as being a favorite vendor who occasionally feeds him for free. Iruka can also remove his name from the file completely.
I know that this whole situation is still percarious though, and that the minute Kakashi or the Hokage actually look at the kid they will know whats up. It would be interesting though, if the Hokage doesn't actually see 'Naruto' for years though and prefers to speak with the parents. He goes to them and explains the barest bit of the situation, gives them a stipend and leaves, feeling a bit sad that 'Naruto' agreed to change his name. On the flip side, the couple have a very concerning/confusing conversation with the Hokage followed by a more comforting conversation with one academy teacher who has been minding their son. The son is adopted so the name change isn't worth questioning. So some kid is just living a slightly outcast life but still thriving due to his loving family and teacher.
When Kakashi eventually leaves ANBU, that's when things really start going to shit. Once he finally manages to surface a bit from his depression (to an extent) he takes one look at the kid and goes "that's not Minato's kid what the fuck." Cue him absolutely tearing ROOT apart in his search for Naruto and coming out the other side going, "oh ok so the Hokage isn't stupid he just doesn't care. alright." He seriously considers assassination attempt #2 but doesn't know who else could take over. So after basically tearing Konoha a new asshole and leaving the Hokage to deal with the upset and Danzo, he 'requests' to visit Jiraiya in heavily implied language as he is sure the Hokage must have sent him there to be protected. (A solid plan worthy of a Kage and Kakashi isn't happy he wasn't in the know but whatever)
So Kakashi finds Jiraiya and basically has a minor panic attack when he realizes that Naruto isn't there either. I think this also might be the point where he starts to try connecting the dots on the idea that the Hokage isn't actually aware that the 'Jinchuuriki' isn't actually Naruto. So he bolts back to Konoha after a spectacularly awkward conversation with Jiraiya -- who is exceedingly confused about the whole encounter and just glad to be in one piece afterward -- and Kakashi starts digging into the paperwork. Iruka is immediately on his ass, traking what he knows and trying to figure out why Kakashi would be interested in Naruto. The two play a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game via paperwork until Iruka starts to realize all that Kakashi has done to try and find Naruto and realizes that it wasn't at the Hokage's behest.
So Iruka actually makes contact with with Kakashi, realizing that he could be an ally rather than the ruin of everything. Slowly Iruka learns the concerns Kakashi has about Naruto's safety and the valid political concerns of a Jinchuuriki-less hidden village. (I'm not saying they scheme to kidnap someone from another village but it'd be funny if Iruka got Gaara and the villages played musical Jinchuuriki, acutally managing to put most of them in better situations. And confusing the hell out of the Akutsuki.) Iruka melts like butter at the genuine care Kakashi seems to have for his sensei's son even if he hasn't been around until now. Kakashi gets close enough that Iruka tells Ayame to request Kakashi for her annual trip to the capitol. Ayame is a customer service master and can lie with the best of them and is able to play it off as a crush on the new ninja seen about town (since Kakashi was basically a non-entity before now). Kakashi takes the mission at Iruka's insistence, and brings Kakashi to meet Naruto. Though I'm 100% sure Iruka chakra seals/barrier seals the hell out of Kakashi before the big reveal.
If Iruka has played his cards right, then he is able to imply that this is all done on the Hokage's orders and Kakashi accepts it because that makes way more sense than a Chuunin and two Ramen Chefs being able to pull one over on the Hokage. Iruka also implies that Kakashi has been brought into the 'op' and thus Kakashi becomes Naruto's new big brother as he is apparently a 'ninja chef' that started working with Ayame at Ichiraku. Iruka might also imply that Naruto can know about his parents and Kakashi fucking clams up and flees. He does come back a year later though as a part fo the 'op' and actually tells Naruto about Minato and Kushina. He doesn't mention the 4th Hokage thing and never the nine-tails thing as they are village secrets (though Naruto has been aware of his 'passenger' for years by now).
Naruto obviously thinks a ninja chef is the coolest thing he's ever heard of and wants Kakashi to teach him. Kakashi 'understands' this to be his part of the 'op' and teaches him some basic chakra control exercises as well as leaving some basic fuuinjutsu scrolls. He is called to the Capitol again within a week because the Daimyo is convinced an enemy ninja has been terrorizing the town. Its really just Naruto attempting too much fuuninjutsu. Kakashi sits him down for a serious talk about limits and then tracks down an actual enemy agent to present to the Daimyo.
Throughout the following year, Kakashi takes a lot of missions in or passing though or by the capitol. This has the unexpected side effect of the Daimyo taking a shine to him and the Hokage more seriously working to develop him as the successor. I like to think the whole charade/comedy of errors (via iruka) ends with Kakashi watching the Hokage finally realize that the 'Jinchuuriki' in Konoha is a fake and internally panicking only for Kakashi to be like 'wait what about the op?' and casually explain Naruto's location and 'progress' with chakra and fuuinjutsu. And Hiruzen who has executed Danzo at this point and watched Kakashi single-handedly find the unknowingly lost Jinchuuriki and lay sweeping change to Konoha via the Daimyo's ear and ANBU contacts, just quits on the spot going "ah you have passed the test" and then fucking off leaving Kakashi with the hat. Like a week later I like to think that Tsunade fucking punts Jiraiya through the office door and demands to know what the hell is going on that Jiraiya is panicking over Naruto being missing/dead, only for Kakashi to go "oh thank goodness" frisbee the hat onto her head and dip.
500 miles to the Capitol and closing: a pissed and embarrassed Kakashi followed by a livid Tsunade, followed by a concerned Jiraiya, followed by an exhausted Tenzou seriously considering resignation
Iruka in the capitol, cheeks puffed like a chipmunk with ramen: why do i hear boss music?

Im screaming. Im living. Im laughing. Im loving this so much.
All of the rookie 12 being close as little babies and naturally sectioning off into closer groups that become their teams!!!! And all of them being watched by two of the most bat shit skilled geniuses would be so chaotic. Not a single soul in that room would know what “possible” means let alone any normal measuring stick for development. They’d be trained like a mini anbu team but with more assassination classroom type shenanigans. And u just know those little shits would love it.
Random ninja: OMG that toddler has a sword!
Kakashi: Wha- Tenten put down that blade! What did I tell you?
Tenten: not to use this sword?
Random ninja: oh thank god he’s responsible
Kakashi: And?
Tenten: its not heavy enough for my weight training regime anymore so I have to use the even bigger sword
Kakashi: good, now off you go.
Random ninja: …I’m going to go lay down now
They would be Chunin level before they’re even old enough to go to the Academy. The first day they show up (a year late for three of them because Neji Lee and Tenten had threatened to burn the village down if they were separated from their friends. Not one person doubts that they would do it. Certainly not Itachi, Guy, and Kakashi all of whom would have sat back with marshmallows to make s’mores while their feral demon children ran wild) Iruka cries because these children are all fucking insane and even more insanely powerful. (However unlike his predecessors he is not so inclined to graduate mini geniuses into fucking soldiers just because he doesn’t want to deal with them and he’s pretty sure their parents babysitters will slaughter him if he tries. Instead they all learn waaaay too much about sealing and Iruka is getting paid for an S Rank mission every day he goes in to teach them as no one else will touch them with a hundred foot pole)
It would be the best kind of madness. They learn to tree walk before they learn how to run. The three ‘adults’ (they’re what sixteen generously?) think that when they start walking it’s a good time to get them started on the basics of self defense. They have to learn to to get their balance early right? They’re not even speaking full sentences when they start training with kunai (blunted). They surpass genin level before they’re four.
The entire village is terrified of these feral little shits and it doesn’t help when they see twelve children take out several ROOT operatives when theyre found watching Sasuke and Itachi-nii a bit too closely accidentally uncovering a massive conspiracy just under everyone’s noses because they are simply Like That™️
God help the village when they reach puberty.

Usually, Kakashi is not interested in normal people living a normal uneventful life, they are mostly boring and not worth his time. That is until he meets Umino Iruka.
There weren’t many things in life that made Kakashi feel embarrassed. When he was five years old and had accidentally peed his pants in front of his father he hadn’t felt embarrassed. When he had been twelve and he had not been able to keep his mouth shut about his crush on his best friend, he had not been embarrassed. When he was nineteen and his first tattoo turned out misspelt and backwards, he’d carried it like a badge of honour. You couldn’t make it to the top of a gang such as the ANBU if you were embarrassed easily. So he just rarely was.
But today, this moment, this hour and minute, he felt more embarrassed than he’d ever felt in his life. Just standing here in the brooding sun in his black leather jacket waiting for something made his skin crawl inside out in a way that made him want to shed it. That he was even here was already so beneath his dignity and if Obito had seen him or anyone else in their group they would have thought he was nothing but a hologram. What was he doing here in this fancy neighbourhood looking straight up photoshopped into the landscape.
Two weeks ago he’d probably shot himself before hanging around here, at a school of all places, especially in this fancy district of Konoha. That fact only heightened his embarrassment at the entire situation. But two weeks ago was before he had met Umino Iruka, before everything had somehow started going upside down.
Iruka was a teacher here, at the school Kakashi was now camping in front of like a creep pervert or axe murderer, and two weeks ago by chance, they’d both run into each other. Rather, they met in a bar in the evening. Kakashi had just been there to pick something up, a deal with some other gang somewhere here in this uptown place that he never personally hung around in, and Iruka had sat on a stool in front of the barkeeper and somehow, for some reason, Kakashi had been compelled to stay there.
He had not been scared of Kakashi’s looks or his tattoos or his more crude way of speaking. He’d actually been intrigued to hear about his turbulent life. About growing up without parents and pushing your way through life with only jobs here and there to keep himself afloat. It’s how Kakashi had ended up in a gang in the first place, in a way at least, since he had no money for anything else. Iruka in turn had the most sanitary life. He too was an orphan, but he’d worked hard for an education and was now a teacher.
Normally Kakashi would have dismissed someone like Iruka instantly, waved goodbye and moved on. He wasn’t interested in women or men that were boring and had nothing to offer to him, usually at least. But he stayed until the early mornings in the bar talking to Iruka, looking over every inch of his face, the scar on his nose, the brown hair in a braid over his head and then, which was arguably worse, left alone to go to sleep. He didn’t even take Iruka back home or go home with him. A waste, really, to talk to someone for so long and not even get anything out of it.
That could have been the end of it, or would have been if Kakashi’s mind hadn’t spent all of the next day going back to that man. It didn’t matter that he had things to do and tasks to fulfil, his mind was occupied by soft voices and brown eyes. He wanted to see him again, get more of a taste of the man that he didn’t get before, take him home this time as he couldn’t last time and so, despite it all, he went back to that bar in the vain hope that the teacher was there again. To his surprise and delight- he was.
Iruka was not scared to ride on Kakashi’s bike, he was not scared entering a part of town that was not as upper class as he was, in fact, he did not seem bothered by Kakashi’s lifestyle at all. When they tumbled hopelessly through the hallway and into the bedroom it was as if they weren’t so different at all. Kakashi would have never thought he’d have a taste for someone so relatively normal, but once he had the taste he could not get enough of it.
This was pretty much how they operated for ten days after that. They met in the evenings at the bar and Kakashi took Iruka home. They’d just be together, often with very little clothing. Iruka was very good looking when his hair was down and hanging long into his face and his hands were soft, tracing each tattoo on Kakashi’s skin with careful fingers to ask him why and when he had gotten them.
On the other hand Kakashi was fascinated by Iruka’s stories about his school children. It warmed his heart how passionate Iruka was about all of them, especially one boy, who was an orphan like them. “If only I would have had teachers like this when I grew up”, Kakashi casually mentioned one time. “Maybe I hadn’t turned out to be…” He gestured to his own face.
“I think you’ve turned out just fine given the circumstances.” Iruka smiled, his eyes looking out Kakashi’s large bedroom window. Watching him from the side like this, with the light of the city at night illuminating his face, Kakashi could feel his heart leap for the first time. He instantly knew this was a very bad sign.
Everything developed so fast between them that Kakashi didn’t notice how much he left his work by the wayside until his right hand man, Obito, pulled him to the side one day. “You’re distracted,” Obito noted. “I don’t know what it is that you are doing, but you should pull yourself together.” Kakashi agreed, of course he did, what else was he supposed to do, but at night he once again went to pick Iruka up and the story continued.
At least until three days ago, when it came to a quick, painful end. He’d rarely been with Iruka in public, mostly because they’d spent most of their time in his apartment, but finally Iruka suggested going outside. All of Kakashi’s assurances that it was dangerous on the street didn’t scare Iruka either. He just smiled and said “You will protect me I am sure of that” which once again reminded Kakashi that there was something so abnormally normal about this teacher that he almost felt compelled to force him to stay in the bedroom with him.
So they took an evening stroll and Iruka held on to Kakashi's arm. They weren’t holding hands, not like that, just clinging to each other as if it was too cold to walk apart. People on the street clearly feared Kakashi, when Iruka pointed it out Kakashi was not embarrassed to admit having a reputation. It was odd really, the more Kakashi revealed of himself the more Iruka seemed to like him. The danger and the conflict didn’t scare him, nothing did.
That was when they ran into Obito and Tenzo, both high ranking members of ANBU, just hanging out together at one corner. They’d both been doing a job earlier today, getting some illegal papers from some guy who was paying for them, a job Kakashi had given both of them. He cursed himself as he saw them look at him, he should have gone a different route. Obito’s eyebrows had disappeared high behind his black hair. “Is that the reason you can’t do your tasks correctly anymore, huh, Kakashi?” He never called him boss, they’d known each other too long for that. “You have a boyfriend now?”
Kakashi, as if stung by a bee, had let go of Iruka as if he was disgusted with him and moved a step to the side. “Of course not”, he had said. “This is nothing but an evening fuck for me, really.” He was scrambling. It had taken him a while to gain the trust of this neighbourhood and while he liked Iruka a lot (more than he would have wanted to like him), the fear of losing everything he had built for himself was too great.
Obviously Iruka didn’t take kindly to being referred to as “this” and “an evening fuck.” He took a step back himself: “Really?! Is that what you think?” Naturally, it was not what Kakashi thought, but he did not feel like he had a choice. He put his head back into his neck and laughed a loud, cruel laugh in reply: “Wait did you think this is some romance type shit?”
The sad and hurt look on Iruka's face when he turned to go, alone, even though it was late and possibly dangerous, would never leave Kakashi as long as he lived, he knew that.
A day or two or three passed in which Kakashi did not dare go back to the bar. He did find himself taking a very long route past the elementary school Iruka worked in, but could not see anything. It was not like he could do anything about it, they’d barely known each other for two weeks, this was not a long lost romance or something, it was just sex. Kakashi could get it anywhere if he wanted.
His thoughts would not quiet down, though. Once he realised he had started falling, he was already falling too hard to ever get out. He dreamed of Iruka at night, about having his hands touch him again, about going through his hair again and kissing those lips just once more. He didn’t get better in the separation from Iruka, on the contrary, Kakashi started getting even more sloppy during tasks.
“Just apologise,” Tenzo said one day, cutting a wooden figurine with his sharpest knife as he did when he needed to get his hands to work. “Clearly you were lying to us when you said it was nothing.” And when Kakashi didn’t reply immediately he added: “It’s no big deal really. It’s just not like we thought you’d go for such an uptowner.” Neither did Kakashi.
So here he was, bike parked in front of an elementary school, out of depth with the wrong clothes and the wrong feelings, embarrassed out of his mind for the first time in his life, waiting for Iruka to finish work. Eventually he had to come out, Kakashi thought. He had already been waiting for about two or so hours and many children had since come out, but Iruka was still missing. Kakashi stayed firm, even if the constant stares from parents arriving really put him out. This was worse than meeting a rival gang for a fist fight. Human stares pierced you without drawing blood and stuck in you no matter how much you tried to shake them off.
Finally, another half hour later, Iruka emerged. Kakashi could see him immediately by the brown braid over his head. He could see Kakashi too, at least Kakashi was sure that he saw brown eyes flicker over, but he turned his head and walked on as if he hadn’t. Kakashi left his bike behind and jogged behind the teacher. “Iruka”, he said a little loud and when the other did not turn around, he repeated. “Iruka!”
“What?!” Iruka’s words came out like a snake hiss. “Are you stalking me now?”
Kakashi stopped in his tracks, a little insecure, which was another entirely new feeling for him. “No, obviously not.” He waited for a moment, but when Iruka didn’t say anything but also didn’t keep walking, he continued. “I just .. wanted to apologise for my behaviour.”
“Aha.” Iruka’s voice was cold. “Well, thanks.” He turned.
“No, no! Stop no! I meant.. I’m sorry, alright.” Kakashi took two steps forward and grabbed Iruka’s wrist just so he couldn’t walk away again. “It was foolish of me to say, really. I was just caught off guard by the other’s being there, because I wanted to keep this for myself.I shouldn’t have said what I said, it was total nonsense. If i wanted an evening fuck only I could have gotten it from anywhere really, I wouldn’t have to come back to you.”
Iruka laughed: “Is that what you call an apology?” Kakashi realised what he had said.
This embarrassment thing really was hard. Kakashi now realised why he’d suppressed the emotion as much as he could so far in his life. “No, I mean, yes. You see, I’m not as smart or eloquent as you and my life is a total chaos, but no I didn’t mean what I said back then. I came back to you specifically because I wanted to, because I…like spending time with you…”
Instantly Iruka’s eyes softened. He was still pouting a little, but clearly moved. Kakashi didn’t want to let the opportunity slip by: “If you want we can continue like we did before. I can pick you up again, if you would want of course.”
“Fine,” Iruka lifted his eyes to meet Kakashis. “Just don’t do that again, ever.” Kakashi’s heart was already leaping again, which made him blush, which made everything even more embarrassing than it already was. “Under one condition, however.” Iruka looked sternly.
When in his life had Kakashi ever been this nervous? “What?”
“Let’s stay here and go to my place for a change. Maybe your friends won’t be around so much then. And once you feel more comfortable you can introduce me.” He smiled and offered Kakashi his hand, who in turn took it.

@panharmonium recently gave me quite the shout-out for my Bookends-verse, so I thought I’d post a series of snippets from various in-progress works for anyone interested. :)
Enjoy!

“This should be illegal,” Obito grumbles, glowering at the school.  He’s slumped back on the bench, hands stuffed into his leather jacket’s pockets, looking as mutinous as Kakashi feels.  He hums his agreement, too tired to use words.
“Finally.  We agree on something,” Obito mutters under his breath.  He nudges Sasuke with his elbow.  “You’re grounded, by the way.”
Sasuke’s head snaps to Kakashi.  Occasionally, Obito’s commitment to zero follow-through has its benefits, and it’s often in moments such as these, where flagrant threats are bandied about like a wooden sword, that Sasuke turns to Kakashi for certain assurances.  Namely that said threats are empty and not to be taken seriously.
It’s a shame that Kakashi has been dragged out of the comforts of his bed and into the cold on Sasuke’s behalf.  He offers his unsuspecting companion nothing more than a solemn nod.
Sasuke’s eyes bug out of his head.  If Kakashi’s not careful, he may find himself on the receiving end of one of Sasuke’s threats.  Those are real and not to be underestimated.

Without looking up Kakashi politely asked, “Can I help you?”
“When is Naruto going home?”
“He’s only just got here,” Kakashi replied softly, his pen skating purposefully across the paper.  Only when he’d finished did he look up.  He stared dispassionately at the shiny, black nest of hair staring at him, while the remainder of Sasuke’s head lay facedown on the table.
“What’s up?  Didn’t sleep well last night?”
As was often the case, Sasuke’s answer was no answer.  Putting his pen down, Kakashi dragged his glasses off and perched them on top of his head.  He leaned back in his chair and assessed the work that lay before him.
“Why are you way over there?”
Sasuke bolted up ramrod straight and twisted violently in his chair to - and Kakashi could only speculate since he couldn’t see his face - glare at Naruto squinting over at them.

“Show me.”
Iruka beckoned him inside and led him hurriedly over to the coffee table where a mess of papers lay scattered.  “Here,” he said, barely letting Kakashi get a good look before he tapped impatiently at a spot on the paper.  “See?  That’s me!”
Kakashi blinked down at the drawing, then Iruka.  “You’re kidding, right?”
“Are you blind?” Iruka shoved the paper in his face and pointed.  “He has a scar across his nose!”
Kakashi squinted.  “I think that’s supposed to be blood?”
“Not much better!”
“Iruka,” Kakashi said, very deliberately taking the paper from him and setting it down on the table, “if you’re really concerned, call the kid’s parents.  Call me again and I’ll tell Naruto and Sasuke where you hid the Playstation.”

There was no time to warn Sasuke about the chaos he’d just unleashed by opening the door.  It only took the dogs one second to catch a whiff of Rin and all hell broke loose.
Kakashi had to give Sasuke credit; he managed to keep himself upright, even as he was trapped in the center of the pack’s stampede.  Amidst the barking, Rin gave a cry of alarm, seeing Bull bringing up the rear, and in a blink of an eye Kakashi was there to deftly sweep Sasuke up into the air before his behemoth of a dog could flatten him like a pancake.
The dogs pawed at Rin with a frenzied excitement, competing for her attention, their antics bouncing off the walls, filling their much too small apartment with noise.  In Kakashi’s arms, Sasuke smacked his hands over his ears.
“Hey,” Kakashi scolded, raising his voice and punctuating the command with a sharp whistle.  It went unheard thanks to Rin’s repeated insistence to each and every one of his dogs that they were, in fact, ‘the best boy.’  All lies at the moment.
Shaking his head, Kakashi put Sasuke down a safe distance away.  “Come on,” he said with tired exasperation, pulling the dogs off Rin.  “You’re acting like you haven’t seen her in years.  Don’t encourage them,” he directed at Rin, shooting her a look.  “I’ve already got a noise complaint.  I don’t need another.”
“I thought you said this place was dog-friendly.”
“It wasn’t for the dogs,” Kakashi muttered in an undertone, glancing at Sasuke.

“I am appalled by your attitude,” Madara said rather pompously.  “Do you realize I could have Sasuke arrested?”
“I do.  In fact, I’m one step ahead of you.”  As Kakashi said this, he turned to Yamato, who looked at him questioningly from the kitchen.  “I have one of Konoha’s finest here now to give Sasuke a demonstration of how our criminal justice system works.  What do you think, Madara?  Should I have him cuff Sasuke and take him for a spin in the backseat of his squad car?  Or maybe we should make some wanted posters, huh?  Set him loose and let the people decide his fate?”
Madara clucked his tongue in disgust.  “Be serious, Kakashi.”
“I am serious,” Kakashi insisted, feigning innocence.  “He’s right here if you want to talk to him.”
Yamato’s eyes bulged and, despite the half wall between them, he backed away, wagging a warning finger at Kakashi.  “Do not hand me that phone!”
Kakashi ignored him and brought the phone back up to his ear, catching Madara declaring, “I can’t talk to you when you’re like this.”
“Really?  Because I have 45 daytime minutes that say otherwise.”

“How many college girls do you think Sasuke’s dated”
Sakura frowned down at the shirt in her hands, taken aback by Ino’s question.
“I don’t know.  I think he’s gone on a couple dates.”
“You don’t talk about that stuff?” Ino asked.
“We don’t not talk about it,” Sakura said carefully.  She picked up the finished stack of clothes and walked them over to the dresser.  “You know how Sasuke is.  He’s really focused on his studies.”
Ino joined her, cradling a small mountain of socks.  She dumped them into the open drawer.  “You’d think he’d have lightened up a bit.”
Sakura smiled to herself and shook her head.  “Not Sasuke.”
She pushed the drawer shut and turned to Ino.  She was watching her.  Smirking.
“What?”
Ino eyed the dresser behind Sakura.  “I thought you said this was temporary.”
Sakura let out a sound of exasperation.  Best friend or not, she’d had enough of Ino’s commentary on this particular subject for one day.  “What do you suggest I do?” she demanded.  “Dump them on the floor?  Most of his clothes are at school.  He won’t mind.”
“I know he won’t,” Ino said smugly.
A knock at the door saved Sakura from having to respond.  She marched across the room, ignoring the triumphant look plastered on Ino’s face, and pulled open the door, relieved to see Kakashi.
