why is it that everytime there’s talks about dan losing his seat is it somehow landos fault? sorry is lando meant to just also drive around at a snails pace because his teammate can’t get to grips with the car? like that’s not on lando. maybe there’s a reason mclaren don’t want to be spending millions of pounds on a driver who has only brought them 19 points in over half a season whilst his teammate has brought them over 3 times as much. maybe there’s a reason zak brown is trying to sign everyone and anyone to that seat and would rather have rookies that have never even been in an f1 car rather than daniel drive for the team. but nope it’s all landos fault.

Love at 300 km/h LN4 Part 2
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Warnings: friends to lover kinda thing, fluff & angst (I actually cried while writing this)
Notes: english is not my native language so this may contain consistency errors, i would really appreciate the corrections but please, be kind. feedback is also appreciated ♡
Summary: You and Lando are close but neither of you tried being more than friends. What happens when you both finally realize that love is right infront of you?
~ This is actually a story related to my own life right know. I have a driver friend that I’m crushing on and some events are in this story. Haha
You never wanted Lando to race for points that badly in your life. Was he really feeling the same you thought? His quality hasn’t been so good yesterday. He finished P15 so he had to fight to come to P4. You wanted him to finish that high and he wanted to take you out properly. You listened to everything the commentator said. Lando was now at P8. Gasly was infront of him. “Will Lando get pass Gasly? And with DRS Lando Norris passes Piere Gasly. What a great race for the McLaren driver“ the one commentator said enthusiastic. „Yay Lando, he is surprisingly very determined to get some points and drive into the top 5. I wonder where this comes from?“ the other commentator responded. Just 6 more laps…will Lando manage to get to P4? But to your surprise Landos car got even faster and he even got passed George and Lewis. “Great Lando you doing amazing“ was what you heard from Landos radio. “Thanks guys the car is great and my motivation is even higher today. Lets keep pushing for P4“ was Landos respond. You smiled when you heard his voice. Moments later Lando was just one position away from P4. You prayed for a miracle that he will get passed Stroll. And then something strange happened. Aston Martin wanted Stroll to pit on the last two laps. That made Landos position clear. He was P4. “Yes baby I knew you could do it“ you screamed as you threw your fist in the air. Lando ended with that position. He could wait to call you and take the next plane to you. He couldn’t stop from smiling, even in his interview he was asked why he was smiling so much. “Oh you know the race was just very good and I just had a great motivator“ he teased. You knew that his fans were going to get crazy about his comment. You quickly took your phone and started to take some photos for him. You promised him to send him these if he finishes P4. You took a few pics till you were happy with on of them. You looked very cute in one of his perch hoodies. You didn’t even think twice and send him the pic with a little caption: “Hopping to hear from you after your duties. Call me x Y/n. PS: You did amazing <3“
“I think your friend just texted you“ Landos media manager told him and gave him his phone. Without thinking Lando opened your chat. He saw your picture. You were in fact wearing his hoodie but he could also see that you weren’t wearing any sweatpants. Your legs were just being covered by his oversized hoodie. When he read your caption he smiled. “You little teaser“ he said to himself. After the dinner he had with Carlos he went straight to his hotel room. He unlooked his phone and went straight to the Facetime icon. He couldn’t just hear your voice, he had to see you. “Lando?“ a black screen and a sleepy voice accepted his call. “Fuck did I woke you up?“ he didn’t thought about your time change. “You kinda did but its ok now I’m awake anyway“ you said with a raspy voice. He loved your sleepy figure and voice. You turned your light in your bedroom on and looked at your phone. Lando looked tried. “You look like shit“ you said and laughed. “Well that’s nice. Thanks I thought you wanted to congratulate me but that’s also fine I guess“ he laughed. You stoped laughing and looked at you. Even tho he wasn’t with you this moment it still felt like he was sitting next to you. “So in that case…congratulation to P4 mister Norris“ your shyly voice made Lando grin. “Thanks I would love to talk longer to you but you should sleep and I should too.“ Your smile faded. “I guess you’re right. Hear from you soon?“ you asked sadly not wanting to end this call just now. You guys wished each other a good night and ended the call.
Lando was at the airport waiting with Carlos and Charles for their private yet. “Hey mate why are you so nervous?“ Charles asked. “Well I kinda have a date with Y/N when I get back to Monaco“ both Ferrari driver looked surprised at him. “Wait Y/N Y/N? Your best friend Y/N?“ Carlos asked “Pierres ex friends with benefit Y/N?“ Charles asked. Landos and Carlos eyes widened. “What?“ Lando asked. “Lando calm down I was just probably just a joke right…right Charles?“ Carlos said and prayed that Charles would get the hint. In that moment Pierre walked by. “You slept with my Y/N?“ Landos angry voice cracked. “Ok guys I thought we agreed not to tell him“ Pierre looked to the Ferrari driver. “Sorry mate it slipped out“ both said. Lando looked back. “Wait you both knew and didn’t told me? You knew how much I liked her and that for many years“ tears forming in his eyes. You meant the world for him. He didn’t really liked Pierre but he also didn’t dislike him. But he hated to fact that you were intimate with another driver and haven’t told him. It felt like every moment he thought you guys were crushing on each other was fake. “If it calms you down it was just for 3 months and she ended it“ Pierre said. Lando rushed to the bathroom he had to hear it from you. He wanted to call you but that would be childish. He knew what his first thing in Monaco was going to be. And boy he hoped that it was a bad joke.
a/n; I know it got a bit sad but I swear it will all add up in the end.

It wasn't me who started crying when I read that Lando and Oscar would one day stop being teammates. This is a strange feeling my body went through. Why did I cry? Why? Oh my God! I don't think I want to experience that.
oh babe trust and believe we're all ???? at how much Lando and Oscar as teammates has hit us it's wilddd <3 they've done absolutely nothing performative or loud but apparently massive amounts of mutual respect is the absolute best drug out there for us.
(under a cut to keep out of teams' tags)
considering how evenly matched Lando and Oscar have been this season and Lando saying over and over again how Oscar has pushed him to be better I'd say we have one of the fairest shots of them deciding to stick together at McLaren beyond 2025 as anyone on the grid apart from Charles and Carlos. I only don't put Lewis and George in there bc no one but Lewis knows how long he's going to stay in F1 and their bond is primarily professional. they like each other for sure but they're in very different positions in their careers to say the least.
but Charles and Carlos are a really good example of two drivers who've found an incredibly solid bond and mutual respect riding out extremely tough times and wildly varying fortunes. the fact that both of them are equally eager to remain with Ferrari in spite of everything is at least in some part because they know their relationship will never become one of the things hindering either of their careers. there have been plenty of moments where outright rivalry or preferential treatment could have altered their dynamic but it never has. they see each other as totally unique drivers with very different careers and can keep all of that rivalry drama out of it (including Carlos' gd family doing their best to try create it w the help of shit stirring fans). Charles and Carlos fully expect the other to fight for the championship as much as the other will but there's no existing history or personal pettiness to muddy that into a problem.
and while it's a totally different dynamic, that's exactly the kind of 'mutual respect above all' type relationship we can see with Lando and Oscar. and to me the fact that Oscar spent at least the previous 8 years getting to know Lando from a distance, plus the fact that Lando has always been so open about his mentality and his mental state, is so specifically helpful to their dynamic. especially because they're so close in age and Lando not being the type to wield his F1 experience over someone else or get all cocky about it. and I think that's specifically in response to how much Oscar chose to let Lando be at the forefront of visibility and demonstrably positioning Lando as The Star. I would NEVER have imagined that Lando would respond so positively and supportively to a rookie teammate winning a sprint win before him. I don't mean that I think he would've been a jerk or petulant, I mean that my expectation was for that win to become a permanent wedge mentally between Lando and Oscar. but nope, he genuinely actively warmed more to Oscar even more after that <3
good god I cannot shut UP but what I'm saying here anon is that we should honestly just not bother thinking about the end of 2025. there's as much likelihood that Lando and Oscar will look at RB and Mercedes and think nah I'm better off here at McLaren as there is either of them going elsewhere. bc driving Max's car or dealing w Toto could easily not be worth it - esp since McLaren seem to have a steadier upward trajectory than say, Aston Marton (so much would have to change for AM to be a forward career move for Lando or Oscar).
quick fic side note but I'm absolutely dying to have the time cleared to read Superdense Neutron Star/Post Supernova bc god I can tell that fic is going to live with me
but the easy, non-compromising relationship they've already formed considering that they're both young and hungry is SUCH a strong pull for staying together at McLaren. Oscar is happy for Lando to be whoever he needs to be and that means Lando will only get higher and higher in the rankings. Lando has responded to Oscar's deference off the track by giving him praise and respect that means any of Oscar's currently unknown to us but inevitable insecurities are taken care of. while no one can say what will happen we can at least say that we've got the best setup for them staying together!
there's also of course the obvious: Lando being so deeply embedded at McLaren and getting star treatment that he wouldn't get anywhere else - and the fact that Oscar took a massive gamble to get to McLaren and has been watching Lando's career so closely for so long. sometimes a career can take so many unfair hits that someone like Alex Albon finds at least temporary stability with a Williams but hope to move on. sometimes a driver can be shrewd and organized enough to get themselves into exactly the right spot like Carlos with Ferrari but he doesn't have complete security. but sometimes it's entirely possible that a young up and comer (or two) finds exactly the right fit from the start of their F1 career and succeeds for years and years!
and looking even further ahead to when they're both closing in on like 30 everything in F1 will be so different that I can't even fathom it so I'm just choosing to not bother! it's like how I see ppl in IG comments saying they hope Oscar marries Lily and I'm like ??? I just see married ppl as SOOOO different to college age that I don't know how people can make those leaps but maybe I'm just super immature lagfljafjh
side side note that while I'm absolutely positive Max and Lando would be horrific in every sense imaginable for Lando, I do occasionally enjoy imagining Oscar there at some point simply bc he's the only driver I can imagine giving RB pause. he's so smart and adaptable that he'd fucking dominate immediately in that car and they'd be braindead to not think hmmmm, this guy is (for example) only 25 and Max is almost 30 - maybe we should let Oscar choose a few specs for himself and see what happens. he could match Max in car smarts, focus and ambition but oooops he also has a sense of calm under stress that Max will never have. Max could openly despise him and it wouldn't affect Oscar's performance at all. and oohhhh to have Oscar be the one to topple the ivory tower nepotism at RB with a nailbiter of a WDC decision in the final race? to see what Max does in response to that? to have Alpine fanboys throwing chicken tendies at the wall watching Oscar's podium where he's also celebrating the championship? ohhhh fuck that's a tantalizing thought.
SORRY lol I really do not see that happening I just find that image so fucking hot. I don't actually want to see Oscar having to deal with RB in reality.

Okay okay, in my opinion and this might be controversial, Carlos should get a contract extension if Charles gets one.
For some reason people seem to tjink last season Charles was way better than Carlos, which is just massively biased by Charles last few races being better. Abu Dhabi and Vegas saved his championship standings, as otherwise he would have finished below Carlos.
Why bring it up? Because somehow people think Carlos is lesser than Charles, when realistically if ferrari let them fight, they beat each other. Leclerc is ferraris golden boy, hence the contract, but if ferrari is smart they keep sainz because he can beat charles at times which is great to have in a team
The rumor about carlos having to win 5 races better be bullshit, because if carlos needs to win 5 races (total of races charles won in recent years for them) then Charles, becaus ehe has a contract, should at least win double that? Meaning that car is essentially needing to win more than half the races, meaning red bull needs to have a huge drop in performance and max needs to be beat. Which is ironic, because the only time that happend in 2023 Carlos won and not Charles
I do like charles, just hate his toxic fans, the normal once are very very nice
For Lando, the discourse is stupid. He got an extension with a team he wanted to win with yet people focus on him "not wanting to race max" dezpite him literally saying the opposite. If he did go to red bull they'd be angry because "he thinks he's better than max Hhaha nowins". They just like to hate on Lando. Most of them are toxic charles fans ironically😂
TLDR: carlos deserves a contract, Lando is fine where he is, Charles is.... Charles, and you are amazing, have a nice day!❤️
I just can’t understand why ferrari would let carlos go. he’s a brilliant driver, got them their only win of last season using his own intelligence and tactics, has proven himself time and time again. sure, this season he wasn’t the most consistent, but I do think a part of that was technical issues with the car and tactics/strategy. and they work well as teammates!! they clearly like each other (sure maybe they’re not in love or anything but there’s definitely a camaraderie there)
charles definitely is the golden boy. which isn’t a bad thing!! he lives, breathes and bleeds ferrari, and his commitment to the team is just astonishing. their bias is a tiiiiiny bit obvious - but as long as it doesn’t effect their driving/relationship, it’s not going to make much difference. it’s like this.*
the charles fans are passionate for sure. there’s a group of them on twitter that are a little nasty, they go after other drivers on a personal level for literally no reason. and the way they hate carlos… it’s excessive.
lando catches so much hate and for what reason?? he said he didn’t want to go up against max, not because he was scared, but because it’d wreck his career. max is literally number 1, will continue to be red bulls number 1 until he retires lol (and rightly so). the car, the team, the strategies… red bull has built them around maxie. how would lando ever fit into that??
lando has grown up in mclaren, he’s improved the team so much, it’s his home, his family. obviously he’s not going to give that up to go and be beaten by max every week, on track and in the garage.
the toxic f1 girlies love to go for landos neck for having no wins, but like… there are people on the grid who’ve been racing for upwards of 10/15 years and never won… haven’t got podiums for years (or ever)… I think maybe we need to focus on moving those drivers on, and bringing new talent in? perhaps? and giving mick his fair chance finally but that’s a whole other conversation
thanks for this, my love!! I enjoyed the rant <3

The crowd were so loud as you rounded the bend onto the home straight that you could actually hear them roaring through your helmet.
The chequered flag was waving just ahead of you and you were locked out in a vicious wheel-to-wheel battle with Fernando Alonso for 5th place. Gritting your teeth, using the screams of your home crowd and digging as deep as possible to find any reserves you had left, you threw everything at the car.
"C'mon, Carrot, just gimme a little more," you mumbled into your helmet, giving everything you had to the point where you were just willing the car to give you just another hundredth of a second.
"P5 Y/N! P5!" Your race engineer's voice broke over the radio, rapidly cut off by a scream from you.
"Really!?" The crowd was going wild, so much so that you could barely even hear the radio.
"Yes! Amazing job, fantastic drive!" You were gone again, lost in the euphoria of the moment and celebrating your personal best with yourself. You noticed you were halfway through your cool-down laps and the crowd were still ringing in your ears. "Do I take it Lewis won?"
There was a suspicious pause from your engineer. When he spoke next you could hear the smile in his voice.
"Nope. Carlos P1, Checo P2, Lewis P3, then Charles, You, Fernando and Lando in P7,"
You didn't think the rest of your radio message would be broadcasted. Between the swearing, screaming and whooping you weren't exactly coherent. You could feel your eyes burning as tears of pure joy spilt over your cheeks, which were starting from aching from how much you were grinning and hollering.
You'd never heard such good news. You were a handful of seasons into your career, but starting at Renault hadn't given you a flying start and then in 2021 you moved to McLaren, where you were slowly starting to creep up into the points, but P5 was your best score to date. You were also thrilled for Lando, who was bringing home double points for the team. And then there was Carlos.
You'd joined Renault a year after Carlos, in 2018. He had been your first ever teammate, and to say he'd left a lasting impression would be an understatement. The pair of you gelled immediately and him taking you under his wing and being incredibly protective of his little rookie quickly blossomed into a genuine friendship built on mutual respect. You had virtually the same sense of humour, which led to some PR videos going viral, and the pair of you fast became a fan favourite. So much so that a year later when Carlos announced he was moving to McLaren, alongside another rookie, the fans (and you) were devastated.
It seemed like a sick twist of fate that after only two years, you ended up following him and taking his spot at McLaren alongside Lando when he moved to Ferrari. Even after his move, Carlos always made time for you. He made a point of never being more than a text or phone call away, and he was one of the few people who you felt truly took you seriously in the paddock. You'd spent many a night sat up late with him wherever you were, in some questionable Renault accommodation, with his 0% beer as you shared your darkest secrets and bonded over the desire to win.
Carlos had admitted to you, in utmost privacy, that he was considering retiring if he ended his 8th season without a win, much to your horror. To say you were delighted for him would have been an understatement.
You abandoned your car, got weighed in a blur and sprinted up to the winner's section of Park Ferme. Carlos was still yet to go into the cool-down room - you spotted him being virtually pulled over the barrier by his team as everyone wanted to give him a slap on the back. You waited for a moment, and then when he was starting to clamber down, you ran at him.
It was difficult with your helmets still on, but somehow he spotted you and was quick enough to catch you as you threw yourself at him, his arms wrapping around your waist as he steadied you and you could hear the muffle of his laugh, warm and rich.
"You did it! I knew you could, I always knew it!" You were rambling but you didn't care, you needed your best friend to know how overjoyed you were. He squeezed you tighter before letting you down, pulling his helmet and baklava off so he could talk to you. You noticed as he did his eyes were red, and cheeks a little flush. He couldn't seem to control the beam he was radiating.
"Thank you. And look at you, P5! I'll be fighting you off my trophies soon," You shook your head, trying and failing to flatten down your hair as you did so.
"I literally don't care, I'm just so glad you won. Carlos Sainz: Formula One winner," you mocked an interviewer as you spoke, forcing your accent as posh as you could make it like an old-fashioned BBC commentator. He stood up a little taller, eyes shining as he grinned down at you. There was a swell in your chest and you thought for a moment you could never be happier, not even when it was your turn on the top step.
"Sounds good, no?"
"So good," you confirmed, pulling him into a hug and then accepting that you had to let him go to the cool-down room and have his podium ceremony.
You stood at the front, of course. You didn't think the top step suited anyone more, and even more so, you were thrilled that the crowd seemed to have adopted Carlos as an honourary Brit following his stint at McLaren judging by the noise being made for him. And he looked so good up there, clinging onto his flag and looking over everything with that look that said he was processing everything and not quite believing it was real and it was all for him.
It was during his national anthem that everything changed.
Your entire focus was, of course, trained on Carlos. He looked like he was virtually glowing standing up there. For a second he closed his eyes, shifting his stance and lifting his chin up with a proud little smile and your world changed.
It was like sitting in the optician's chair when they give you that lens to look through that just shifts your entire world into focus. You felt like you were seeing clearly for the first time in five years. Your stomach dropped at the same time as your heart leapt into your throat, beginning to hammer the way it did at the start of a race. Suddenly, everything made sense. How close you'd immediately become at Renault, the way he made you feel secure and listened to. How easy it was to trust him. The way he was the first person you looked for when you arrived at the paddock, even after he left. When he told you he was leaving and it felt like the end of the world. The way every time he found you now you were on different teams, you left the interaction with a spring in your step and renewed confidence.
Holy shit, you were in love with Carlos Sainz.
And you were so dumb it took you staring at him getting everything he ever deserved to realise it. Your chest tightened. This time it was a familiar sensation. That feeling you had huge news, and not a clue of who you could possibly tell, if anyone. That the person you desperately wanted to tell would be entirely unavailable for heaven only knows how long after this. And a faint sense of dread that this had been a very, very stupid epiphany to have because you'd probably never be able to be with him like that and you'd ruined your friendship in one go.
You watched the rest of the ceremony in a strange combination of overwhelmingly happy and subduedly heartbroken.
In a matter of a short few hours, you found yourself pleasantly drunk and stumbling around the after-party. You weren't typically the type to get drunk to drown your sorrows, and initially, you had been drinking happily along with the rest of the drivers in pure celebration. But it was funny what a couple of glasses of Daniel's wine mixed with something you didn't want to think about too much could do, and your happy drunk self faded into a self-pitying, brooding character.
The place was crammed, so at first, you hadn't really noticed yourself withdrawing that much until you were pressed against the cooling glass of the French doors leading out onto one of the smoking balconies. Casting a quick glance over the mingle of people spread out in front of you, including Zak Brown laughing loudly at a joke and Lando huddled in a corner with his gaming friends looking at something on his phone, you assumed you wouldn't be missed.
England isn't known for its warm summers and when you realised you'd left your jacket inside you were grateful that the collection of plush garden furniture was situated underneath the heaters placed along the wall. You sank down into a comfortable armchair, considering the rest of the glass of red wine you were holding with a foggy mind. You fought the urge to send some whiney texts to some close friends from home, but luckily your mind was clear enough to register that was the drink talking and place both your phone and the glass down on the small table in front of you.
You leant back, your head tilted upwards as you basked under the pleasant heat being emitted and allowed yourself to fall into the floating sensation for just a little while.
"Hey - this is where you went?" The familiar rolling accent was enough to get you to open one eye, and you realised that if you dropped your head even further back you could get a look at Carlos from where he was standing by the doors without moving. As an upside-down Spaniard swam into your view he laughed at you with a shake of his head.
"Needed some air," you mumbled, suddenly feeling a lot more sober as he dropped into the seat beside you.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, why?" He was giving you that scrutinising look that said there was no way you were getting away with your response.
"Because..." he dragged out the word, smile still tugging at his lips. "You went quiet ages ago and I got worried,"
"Oh," your mind was too slow to come up with a decent excuse. "It's just the wine - a bit strong for me," you admitted, pointing at the unfinished glass in front of you.
"I don't believe that, but okay,"
He turned in his chair, back resting against one of the arms and legs dangling over the other. His hair was still a mess, bits of it flopping into his face as he focused on his phone, typing a message out with exaggerated concentration. Your chest squeezed.
"If I told you something dumb would you promise to forget it in the morning?" The words were out before you could stop them, and judging by the way he was looking at you with those big curious eyes like he didn't want to be anywhere else, well you knew you weren't getting away with it.
"Like... how dumb?" You shrugged, suddenly fascinated in the palms of your hands. If you looked at him again you'd say something really stupid. What you hadn't noticed was that Carlos had slid out of his armchair and was squatting directly in front of you, concerned brown eyes trained on your face. His cheeks were flushed, full lips pink and the corners resting in a permanent smile. He looked so dangerously good in just a jumper and jeans.
"Like... I just realised I'm in love with you and I have no idea what do to about it?"
"Oh,"
"Oh god,"
"No-"
"No - just - shit I'm sorry. Just forget I said anything, I'm wine drunk and feeling sorry for myself, I don't wanna say anything that takes away from you today. You should go back inside, everyone is going to be wondering where you are and...." you trailed off when you moved your hands from where they were covering your face because he was looking at you with something terrifying shining in his eyes.
"You - you're in love with me?"
"Maybe? It hit me when you were on the podium. Fuck, you looked so good up there, Carlos, and I - I don't know it just thew everything into perspective-"
You didn't get to finish your sentence because you were muffled by a warm heart and you realised he was kissing you. Your body responded on autopilot, arms wrapping around his neck as he stood leaning over you. When he pulled back he had the same grin on his face he had when he'd just pulled something clever off in a challenge video and he was waiting to see how you'd respond. Your heart was hammering, body struggling to keep up with mind as you slowly were realising what had just happened. That Carlos Sainz had kissed you.
"I think I've been in love with you for a long, long time. I just assumed you weren't interested because you never replied to my flirting,"
"What flirting?" His eyes widened in shock as he stared at you as though you'd just admitted to something much more shocking.
"I flirted with you every day!"
"No, you didn't!"
"I asked you to dinner with me once a week..."
"I thought you were being a good friend!" Carlos groaned dramatically, dropping his head onto your shin bone and gently bumping it a couple of times to make his point. You liked the way his hair tickled against your skin.
He was nudging at you, pulling you up from your chair and capturing you in a quick kiss, before settling himself in one of the deck chairs looking out across the landscape and pulling you between his legs. You found yourself relaxing against his chest like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like you cuddled with him every day.
"Don't you have a party to be going back to?" You asked, enjoying the way his chest rumbled and it vibrated through your lungs as he made a noise in response.
"I have to ask someone on a date first," he was nosing soft kisses against your shoulder. They were gentle, lazy almost. They weren't asking for anything, they were just there because he wanted to kiss you, and you weren't stopping him.
You and Carlos watched the sunrise like that. Talking about nothing and everything all at once. Talking about all the things you should have done years ago. It felt so good to have him like that, so right. It was like some final barrier had crumbled between the two of you and he was seeing you exactly as you were. There was no hiding, no pretending, and what thrilled you, even more, was that he liked what he saw there.
You felt yourself snuggling further into his strong arms, relishing in the way he felt so warm and sturdy against you. Your eyes were growing heavy, the relief and the weight of everything finally lifting and being replaced with a warm heaviness creeping up your limbs.
The last thing you remembered before you slipped into a dawn sleep was the feeling of Carlos' lips on the top of your head, and his soothing voice close by your ear.
"I don't know if this day could have gone any more perfect,"

as the anon that asked for the race list: thank you!
now this is totally up to you if you have the time to spend on this, but this is my first year watching the races, and while I've been doing some background research to get up to speed, there is still a lot i don't know. i trust your judgment so what are some races and/or f1 adjacent things i should look into? i'm going through your McLaren list and have watched the last 4 seasons of dts and the brawn documentary. are there any other books/ documentaries/ races (especially seb's) / old youtube videos that are lost in the void that i should also check out?
again no pressure and thank you!
no problem!
(and btw welcome to f1 and the world of watching some glorified hot wheels every other sunday 😁 it’s great!)
i completely get how daunting it can be as a new fan in the sport. when i was getting back into f1 it also took me some time to get back up to speed with everything, especially all the techy stuff; i honestly learned the most through just watching the races (old and new), bc you get to see all the strategies play out, the pit-stops, the overtakes etc. and the terminology just becomes much easier to understand through sheer exposure. there are also some really cool f1 data analysis blogs you might want to follow on twt/x if you want some more detailed tech analysis and graphs if you’re into that sort of thing: (x)
as for seb, oh there’s a whole arsenal of recs i have!
monza 2008, rise of torro rosso wunderkind; i presume you already know the lore with that one but ig you can never get tired of it.
abu dhabi 2010, world championship no.1 “du bist weltmeister!”
interlagos 2012, the infamous one. this one’s a rollercoaster, chaos everywhere and the manifestation of murphy’s law: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. amidst a title battle against nando, seb was fighting the weather, bruno senna’s front wing, a damaged side-pod, no radio, and somehow managed to claim p6 to win the championship
malaysia 2013, multi-21 (iconique), he was faster, deal with it. 💅
singapore 2013, domination masterclass from quali to the race. (also just all of his singapore wins...lion of singapore and all that)
india 2013, title no.3 secured, changed tyres on lap 2 and came out p17, was third by only lap 13 and then won the race by nearly 30 seconds. it was also his sixth win in a row. he went on to win three more. speaks for itself. also this:
Tumblr media
malaysia 2015, first win with ferrari, can't forget that one, also features sewis’ gay knee-touching on the podium.
germany 2019, CHAOS, in which merc got bewitched by the special livery curse 😅, with crashes, spins, 50-second long pit stops, and also features one of seb’s best drives from p20 -> p2
i also highly recommend watching Floz's fan-made docus on youtube about 'the silver war' (there are also docus for the 2014 and 2015 seasons) as well as the merc v ferrari (lewis vs seb) 2017 fight and 'fight for five' in 2018, they're so much better than dts and actually give a full run-down of what happened during the season, with all the action on-track, with interviews and providing all the context! it's so well-edited as well (you literally feel like you're watching a movie about all of the seasons) and they are just incredibly fun to watch.
in general, i love rewatching races from 2017/18 (literally my comfort seasons), personal favs include spain 2017 (strategy galore and lewis v seb), baku 2017 (for obv reasons), austin 2017; and basically the 2018 season in its entirety...
as for books, there are many driver autobiographies e.g. jb (he’s even got two lmao), mark webbah etc. but i think the best f1 book out there is adrian newey’s memoir ‘how to build a car’ if you want lore + great insight into cars!
i’d also recommend watching some older races (i could do a separate post on which ones are my personal favs) but it’s all up to you in the end! go digging, look around on yt for some highlights and just keep exploring! 🫶💜

alright you have me convinced!! what should i know before i watch indycar next season??
yooo i'm so glad i convinced you!! this is a pretty long post, and is kind of all-over the place. i tried to break it up by general topic, but i'm adding randomly as i think, so just a warning. i'll add some info links i like at the bottom. (if you or anyone wants to talk indy or f1, asks or dms are so very welcome, i love making friends <3)
one thing about indy is unlike in basically every else, many cars look very different even when on the same team as well as special liveries that are nothing like their normal ones, so i'd recommend getting the indycar app (it's free and user friendly once you figure out the weird layout) as it has a spotter's guide. it also has onboard cameras and radios for free (!!!!).
indycar is (usually) a pretty friendly sport, but as is the case with american sports, we like chaos, so the drivers can pretty much say anything except swear words lol. there's a few different clips of drivers threatening each other, which is great. id say most drivers are friends or at least acquaintances, expect santino ferrucci (huge bigot, pay driver, got kicked out of f2 for extremely dirty driving, and i personally hate his hair) and often romain grosjean as he hits people a lot. as for 2024 rookies, kyffin simpson's dad bought him his seat, and kyle larson saying the n-word in 2020 means he has some really, really racist fans.
the safety rules are strict and the cars are very durable which is good for high-speed crashes. the safety people (shoutout amr indycar safety team i love y'all, amr the company i hate you more than i hate the fia) travel with the races and have extensive training. they are also stationed in places that allow quick access to any location on a track. this is most apparent at ovals as they are much faster and more dangerous. at the other races, they are stationed where there is higher likelihood for a more dangerous crash that needs faster reactions. they take trucks to the site that are full of basically anything that might be needed. this is especially important as indycar refuels and are at high risk of combustion compared to f1. the calling yellow flags is also a lot more liberal which is nice. during longer yellows, and reds at ovals they'll run a sweeper truck to clean the racing line so people don't slide into walls.
for flag code info, as i don't have the patience to write it out, it is is section 7.2 of the rule book (page 27). i've linked it at the bottom of the post.
with the cars, they're all required to have the same chassis and aren't allowed to change a huge amount, so the racing is mostly down to skill, though andretti, ganassi, penske, and mclaren are better as they have more money. there are two engine suppliers, honda and chevrolet, iirc (don't quote me here) chevy is a bit more powerful, but honda is a bit more handleable. fast pit stops are usually about 7 seconds due to smaller pit crews (7 people maximum) and refueling. each car also has it's own pit box as teams have variable car numbers based on what they can afford. firestone provides tires, and there are two compounds, primary and alternate, as well as a wet tire. primaries are the harder compound and have a black sidewall. alternates are softer and have a red sidewall, except at street circuits where it's green to signify all natural rubber. use of both compounds are required. on broadcast you'll hear them mention "sticker reds" which are just the brand new ones.
more tire info in section 15 of the rulebook (page 84). there's some complex rules if you like tires.
the biggest difference between indy cars and f1 is f1 has power steering, indy doesn't. if you watch onboards, the drivers are wrestling the car the whole time, and most of the racing comes down to skill. the actual racing is often chaotic (indycar app helps with this. i keep it open always) and since there are many pit stops in a race (the cars use a lot of fuel) the leaderboard will change a lot.
the points system is very different, i'll try to cover it as succinctly as i can but i'm going to put a link for the wiki on it at the bottom anyway. (this is going to be formatted real weird, but i want to be brief). p1 50; p2 40; p3 35; p4 32; 4th-10th decreases by 2; p10 20; 10th-25th decreases by 1; everything p25 down is 5 points. drivers get points for finishing the race, basically. (unless there's more than 33 finishers, then 34 down get nothing, but that doesn't really happen). there's some bonus points also, 1 for leading a lap, 2 for most laps led, and 1 for pole position. the final bonus is for indy 500 qualifying. top 12 get points from p1 getting 12, descending by 1, to p12 getting 1.
as for the circuits there's three types: ovals (6 races, 4 tracks), roads (6 races, +1 non-championship race), and street (5 races). ovals are very high speed with little to no breaking. road courses are just your average circuit made for racing, the roads tend to be a bit rougher than f1's but that's kinda just how american tracks are. street circuits are, well, on the street. american roads suck major dick. the smoothest indycar street circuit is comparable to the worst of f1's. very bumpy, usually some good crashes (watch 2023 st. petersburg start. shit was insane).
as a fan, i cannot recommend irl indy more. some races are busier than others, obviously, but it's cheap considering it's a big racing category. 3 day entry for the less major races is usually $60-ish, and paddock passes are an additional $120-ish. not 100% on the price for pit access, but that is a bundle with three day tickets usually. the races aren't super crowded and there isn't assigned seats which is nice. the paddock is super open (check my "fenrir indycar" tag, quick access on my pinned) and you are able to walk up to and touch the cars if you really want (i wouldn't) as well as have conversation with engineers if they're not busy. if you have pit access the drivers are usually just wandering around and are often happy to stop and talk/sign something when not busy. there's also a high risk of nearly getting run over by drivers on their scooters. will power is notorious for this.
for my non-americans, (love y'all) we are very happy to have a conversation with strangers. the indy fans are often thrilled to talk about their favorite drivers and thoughts with anyone. when i went id say the only bad experiences i had was getting overwhelmed (my fault, i went to a place that i knew would cause a meltdown) and my dad getting hit twice by a man in a golf cart twice (same guy, not my dad's fault, the cunt didn't try to move, warn him, or apologize, just hit him, let my dad stumble, hit him again. i'm still mad). the seats are usually right on the track, so it's extremely loud and smelly. 10/10 can not recommend irl indy enough. i am biased to the pnw and it's the only race i've been to, but the portland race is great. it's not got masses of people, you can walk right up to the track to watch with the only thing between you and the cars being a concrete wall and a fence, and as it's a smaller race with less fans compared to the east coast and mid-west races, it's cheaper. biggest con is its built on a swamp, so super humid. (another pro, i'll be there <3 [joke.])
any questions you've got or clarification needed, my notifications are on and i'll respond to relevant stuff as soon as i see it.

Monza Musings
Some of the comments online following that race. Where do we even start.
I can’t work out if they are new fans who don’t fully understand the sport yet or people who just ignore facts because they are angry.
Yes the Max Verstappen show is getting boring, other fans struggle to find the motivation to watch the races anymore and the sport can’t survive on the fans of one team alone. It was the same when Mercedes dominated, the first Red Bull domination, during the McLaren domination, the Schumacher domination and the Williams domination (though I can barely remember that one). It’s not great for the sport outright.
What I will say though is I do remember in virtual every other situation it was a team or a couple of teams winning. I’ve not see a single driver in a team make the car look unbeatable while his teammate has floundered, so kudos to Max for that.
This new generation at McLaren have always prioritised team. “Let your teammate past”, split strategy, Carlos’ first podium was because Lando let him past, Lando’s first podium required Carlos to let him past. Their last win was a hold position order. It is how McLaren operate.
Yes in teams the lead driver normally gets pit preference but sometimes they don’t want to pit first. Some times the data shows the lead driver will come out in traffic whilst the second driver would come out in clear air and undercut a rival. As a team are you meant to not take that advantage to save a drivers feelings?
Yesterday the timing shows Lando overtook Oscar in the pits, he was approaching the corner at full speed on warmer tyres. He was ahead going into the corner. I’m giving Oscar the rookie benefit of the doubt that he didn’t calculate all that but just wanted to keep the place and Lando had given him space so he thought what he did was acceptable. It wasn’t. I’ve seen lots of people say that it should never have happened if they pitted Oscar first but very few ready to admit he was in the wrong.
Go back to quali even Oscar admitted the only time he was quicker than Lando all weekend was the last run in Q3. He thought he was having a poor weekend. Lando’s call for Oscar to pick up the pace was justified and Tbf Oscar did pick up the pace, proving Lando’s point. The car could do it, Oscar just wasn’t at that point.
Can we stop acting as if losing to a Williams is embarrassing. That belittles all the hard work that team had put in, the improvements they have made and how well Alex is driving it. Williams were once a world beating team. There is no reason to suspect they will never be competitive again.
Again the hate that Lewis can’t race wheel to wheel. In a race that saw Ferrari on Ferrari and McLaren on McLaren crime, as well as 3 other drivers getting the same penalty for the same thing, all the hate falls on Lewis. It’s like Brazil Sprint 2021 doesn’t exist, 20th to 5th in a handful of laps and that was just one occasion he has shown it. Anyone who tells me Lewis can’t race wheel to wheel I know is letting emotion override sense.

Oscar will get his gp win before lando. lando will not even be able to hold max off to convert this pole to a win like oscar was able to. this will just confirm who the better driver for wins and championships is.
i’m gonna start off my saying that i was a lando fan before i was an oscar fan and i love love love lando with all of my heart, just like i do with oscar. none of this is anything personal against any of the boys!!
i don't really feel qualified to say something good about this because my memory is really bad. i do not remember what i had for lunch yesterday. however, i think it's important to remember that there were some differences between the grids in the sprints of qatar and brazil. i think that, if we forget about the difference in tracks and temperature and tire deg and whatnot, it makes quite a lot of difference for max to be starting p2 instead of p3 – especially being p3 and having carlos and george on the softs driving past him in like one second.
in qatar, max dropped back and had to fight with a lot of other drivers, while oscar could pull away at least a bit. he got overtaken by george, but kept cool and when george's tires weren't good anymore, he had no problem keeping the lead. of course, oscar managed several good restarts after the safety cars, but he wasn't really under any pressure from behind, except for george (right? do i remember this correctly? i really apologize otherwise). BUT max was catching up towards the end and he probably would've been able to go past if there had been more laps, both considering how oscar has been struggling with his tires, & the power of the red bull....
but this weekend, max had a good start and then that was it. he didn't have anyone fighting him or holding him back.
i don't think i came to any conclusion here, but maybe the conclusion is that it's not just that easy to compare oscar's sprint pole to lando's. i think that any kind of conclusions rn are hard tbh since the red bull is so insanely good. the only thing i know is that lando is fast as fuck (check out his position in the standings, he spent so many rounds fighting for the bottom points and now he has SEVEN podiums???) and oscar is doing so so well as a rookie too. i'm super excited for the future of mclaren and our boys <3

WIPs I have for this summer!
I've been doing crochet lately and I've been ignoring a bit all my wips + some ideas I have to start writing, so here are three things that might or not become something in the future!
1. Lost In Japan. Chapter 4
"Carlos!"
Charles appeared through their hospitality door's, making himself first a coffee before walking to the table where the mentioned and Lando were. Carlos was drinking his first coffee while Lando was eating some random food from the Ferrari catering his friend got him.
"How was the first night?"
"Fine."
Charles nodded and then took his phone. He tipped something and then showed them the screen. It showed Mclaren's Instagram account.
"They've already posted about you disappearing." He told them softly. "They didn't say any details, just that you're not racing and that you've been last seen in Tokyo. They say that the police is already looking for you but ask everyone to help in the search."
Lando eyed Charles' phone, seeing that he was not lying. The post wasn't a thing out of this world. A white and black photo of him, another of his last outfit and a short caption explaining the situation briefly with a hashtag. He didn't like seeing how their social media team had written everything, they made it seem as if he was dead and he was pretty sure he was still alive.
Unconsciously he had let out an angry sound, because Charles chuckled at him and then proceeded to talk to Carlos about their day driving at the track, leaving Lando alone with his thoughts. After some minutes, where Lando wasn't paying attention to anything at all, someone approached them, blocking the little light that entered through the window and bringing Lando back from the world of his thoughts. It was Mattia. He was speaking Italian so he couldn't get anything at all but he was sure he was talking about him, as the team principal was pointing at his direction. Charles thought, had the decency for him to speak in English.
"Oh no, don't worry, it's our new team pet. He'll make good content for our social media."
"Yeah, exactly. We can have a pet, can't we? It'll make us look good for the fans."
Mattia looked at them confused, leaving them muttering something in Italian again. Lando couldn't even feel something for whatever had happened before Charles was already talking again.
"So, little L, what are we going to do with you?"
2. Sea (provisional name)
(AU Non-famous Lando Norris, where Lando is a scuba diving teacher and Carlos is a F1 driver in his bachelorette week-long party)
Lando helped him into a sitting position where it would be easier for him to breath, moving to his side and with his hand in the other's back, doing little soothing movements. He also took a breath and tried to relax after all had passed and everyone was safe and sound.
"Damn, that's a big hole. How the hell can you do this underwater?"
Lando turned his head to see what was Max talking about. The dutchman had Carlos' oxigen in his hands. Carlos turned his head, trying to look and ask Lando what had happened but as soon as he opened his mouth, the younger seemed to pale. The grip Lando had on Carlos' hand seemed to fastly get stronger before he released it.
"Alex, take care of him, I'll be in my room."
The last thing Carlos saw about Lando before having to pay All attention was him stumbling inside the boat. Even with his half-asleep brain, Carlos understood something wasn't right with the british. The spaniard seemed the only one who had heard Max talking about his oxigen tank, apart from Lando (who had almost literally ran away) and Daniel (who now seemed to shush Max and talk with him secretly).
During the hour that Alex had him resting and reassuring he was ok again, the whole group seemed to take turns between showering, changing their clothes and disturbing Carlos peace.
3. Ride to Live (provisional name)
(Historical Inaccurate AU where Lando is a racing rider and Carlos is a dressage rider)
"Don't you think they are beautiful animals?" Carlos asked.
"I guess they can be, yes..."
"I've been riding her for 10 years already, in a few years she'll get her desired retirement surely. Don't you love them? They are such magestic and loyal souls. They are always scared but they have so much confidence in you after all that they overcome everything."
He just stared at the mare without an expression, thinking on how different he got to grow and how he would have loved to grew up loving his career, just as Carlos showed with passion in every movement he did and word he said. The Spaniard looked at him confused at him. He let out a sigh before finally talking.
"Carlos, you do dressage, I do racing. While you have to see and work with them in the most elegant a brilliant animals, I have to work with beasts without control, kids thrown to run, scared and confusef. While you've only got her, I have ridden more horses than years my professional career has. I've ridden horses to their deaths, I've broken my bones while doing it. My horses will never have enough time to have that confidence with me. I'm just The Reaper for them. You and I are totally different. You live to ride, I ride to live."
With that, Lando left him behind. He knew he'll come across as a mean and bad person again, reinforcing his bad reputation. Nothing he wasn't already used to.
Champions weren't kind, and he was the ruthless of all them, he needed to.

THE FORMULA 1 TAG GAME! 🏎️
rules. answer the questions below!
tagged by @vinvantae tagging: everyone that wants to do it, just say i tagged you. also, @goldsainz @formulaforza @carlosheinz @chrysanthemonza
Tumblr media
1. Who or what got you into F1?
-> my family! they've been enjoying motorsports for years so naturally, i ended up falling in love too. something about forced proximity lmaoo
2. Who was the very first F1 driver you supported? Do you support them now? Have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?
-> kimi raikkönen!! as a child i would get really excited to see him on tv or on track, my parents said i recognized his car and all. i supported him always, followed his years out of f1 and all, he’s 100% my favorite of all time.
3. Who's your current favourite F1 driver?
-> i have two 2023/24 favorites: lewis hamilton and oscar piastri.
lewis has been a favorite of mine from the beginning, his racecraft has always been enjoyable to me. also, he’s one of the reasons why (alongside nico and schumi) i decided to support mercedes. he’s a big big inspiration for me, all of the things he has done are wonderful so i’ve never doubted him as one of my favorites.
oscar, on the other hand, is ofc a new addition to the ‘fav f1 driver’ list but is one that doesn’t surprise me! i saw him go up categories and loveeed his driving style. i was never a diehard fan but a supporter of his career for sure. when he got to f1 (and seb left) i knew who my new favorite was gonna be! (now i am, in fact, a diehard fan)
4. Is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? What made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?
-> not a pairing but…a boy band…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they live on my head rent free, the videos (and the lore) were so funny (iconic). BUT, if i had to choose a pair, i would go for kimi and seb!! i had always wanted to see them as teammates bc of how well they got along, when it happened i was the happiest. also nico and lewis were my number ones back in the day and by consequence my biggest heartbreak.
5. Do your parents, siblings or relatives have a favourite team and/or favourite driver(s)?
-> everyone in the family likes something different. some have their special reasons but in general they vary.
dad’s favorites are mclaren, lauda, and senna, my oldest sister’s are mercedes and button, my older brother redbull and alonso, younger sister ferrari and verstappen (don’t even ask), and my mom’s favorites were ferrari, prost, schumacher, and häkkinen. <3
6. Do you have any favourite races? Are there any that stand out to you the most?
-> this is such a hard question but i’ll go for the ones i rewatch the most: united states 2018, canada 2011, suzuka 2005, abu dhabi 2010, turkey 2020, and germany 2019.
7. Do you have a favourite circuit? Can be from the past or from the current calendar.
-> hockenheim, suzuka, sepang, interlagos, istanbul, spa, silverstone. my lovers fr.
8. Have you ever been to an F1 race in real life? Feel free to tell us your experience going to one if you like.
-> i have! i went to my first gp when i was almost one year old, it was france 2003 — nevertheless, the first one i remember going to/experiencing (faintly but i do) is the 2007 brazilian gp!
i’m lucky enough to have gone to multiple over the years and i’m so grateful to my family for it. 2022 and 2023 were the first years i was able to go by myself or with my friends/colleagues to races! (i did go a couple with my family + i go with my brother everywhere but yeah) it’s been amazing!
9. Have you ever met an F1 driver in real life?
-> i’m very lucky to say yes, i have met a couple over the years and it’s been great! from the current grid i’ve met everyone but zhou and hülkenberg!!
10. Do you have a favourite F1 car? If so, what is it?
-> FW14B, MP4/4, W11, F2002, RB19 AAAAAAAHQHEUJW. i believe this question goes more towards the liveries but i love those cars, they were such a wonder and the WAY they were driven. ugh. amazing. i love rewatching their races.
11. Do you have a favourite one win wonder?
-> ok so, i would say george but since he’s still racing i’m not counting it. i’ll go with pastor maldonado. HEAR ME OUT. it was an insane day, i was ten but i still remember how crazy everyone felt there in barcelona, like what just happened. also insane to think about how it was pure pace, like yes he was lucky on saturday but sunday was his. ALSO having kimi on the podium is a huge bonus.
12. Do you have any favourite quotes from the F1 world? This can either be inspirational or hilarious.
-> “we have to remember these days. there is no guarantee they will last forever. enjoy them as long as they last.” — sebastian vettel, 2013.
“that’s for all the kids out there who dream the impossible, you can do it too.” — lewis hamilton, 2020.
“i’ve always believed that you should never, ever give up and you should always keep fighting even when there's only the slightest chance.” — michael schumacher, 2007.
“just leave me alone, i know what to do.” — kimi raikkönen, 2012.
“bwoah” — kimi raikkönen, always.

True Blue // Lando Norris
Tumblr media
Not my picture!
Inspired by the Song True blue - Billie Eilish.
Part 2 Part 3
Warnings: mostly fluff
Notes: english is not my native language so this may contain consistency errors. I would really appreciate the corrections…please, be kind. Feedback is also appreciated ♡
Summary: You meet Lando but you’re a part of Williams.
“Y/n please don’t get lost,” your aunt tells you, “if you do, ask Alex and he will help you find me.”
You giggle at your aunts words. It’s the first time in 2 years that you’re with her at a race. Together you’re walking on the gird to the Williams pit box. As an important part of the Williams racing family your aunt Claire is always busy talking with somebody of Williams engineers. Meaning you will be left alone and bored. Claire knows you like to walk around a bit to discover things in new places. You've never been to any other race than Silverstone. Meaning that being at the Brazilian Grand Prix is very exciting for you. You always wanted to visit Brazil. There’s just something about that place.
Today’s the first race weekend of hopefully many, that you will attend. You plan to work as a pr manager at williams. With the support of your aunt and your friend Alex Albon it would be a dream come true.
You leave your aunt behind who was talking to some engineers. As you walk around the paddock you explore the place a bit more. You noticing that the cars are already prepared to get ready for the testing. Maybe you should head back to the Williams garage, you thought. As you spin around to walk to the garage you bump into someone. Almost falling you try to keep your balance. As you look up, ready to ask why that person didn’t dodged, you stop and are stunned to speak. In front of you is standing a handsome boy with brown curly hair who gives you an apologizing smile.
He’s wearing an orange race overall, meaning you just bumped in to a McLaren driver. You try to remember who the drivers from McLaren are this season. Before you can identify him he breaks your thoughts.
“I’m so sorry” he tells you. “It’s okay, nobody was hurt” you give him a small smile.
You look at him for a few seconds. He looks pretty, you think. Without thinking you stick out your hand, trying to introduce yourself to him. He quickly grabs your hand, “I’m Y/N,” you tell him. “Lando,” he says back. Now you remember that he is the popular driver of McLaren.
“You drive for McLaren right?” instant regret spreads throughout your body. Of course he’s driving for McLaren look at his overall stupid, you think. “You are a smart smurf. I didn’t know that Williams fans were smart and cute” he laughs and looks at your Williams shirt. Before you can respond you see someone also in an orange shirt saying that he has to get ready. Lando shoots you an apologetic look. “I need to get in my car,” Lando tells you “I figured, that’s fine I also have to go,” you tell him, “Good luck with your race.”
”Wait wait,” Lando says quickly when you start to walk to the Williams garage. You turn back around, looking confused at Lando. “Meet me after the race so that I can get to know you better. You know I never met a cute and smart smurf.” You laugh at his statement. “Hmmmmmm,” you say with a small smile, you’re flattered that he wants to get to know you better. “Please” Lando says with a smile. “Ok, but only if you finish podium” you giggle. “Deal” he quickly tells you and with that he start to walk to his car. You look after him for a moment before you go back too…maybe with a smile that's way too big.
a/n; Hi guys, I hope you like my first post. Still don’t know in which direction this story will go but I have some ideas.

I'm starting to believe in the power of your essays because in a strange way they reflect reality :)

oh babe listen, the fact that I cannot contain myself is not that I'm trying to infect others I promise <3 what anyone can take from quotes like these is that it isn't wrong to take all of the concrete things we've seen and read about Lando and Oscar's partnership and decide that a whole lot of mutual respect and even fondness is clearly there. and that they communicate pretty damn well and that's helped not a little by being basically the same age and sharing a lot of similarities as people. and by not leaping to the whole bromance thing and having to maintain that image, and neither of them being typical "alpha" types, there's a solid hope for their partnership not turning sour. those are very sweet conclusions that can be drawn without me writing any kind of parasocial essays! that's the best part for me, that I can have my fun and everything but truly at it's core there's a reason why the Lando and Oscar partnership is so exciting to every kind of McLaren fan.
.
.
BUT SINCE YOU SEEMED TO BE EVEN REMOTELY ASKING… (comedic trombone sound)
this part especially drives me insane.
when asked whether he was able to learn anything from his rookie teammate. "Keeping calm and being yourself, it's good to be reminded of that."
bc Lando loves and respects specific things about all of his F1 buddies. and it was a no-brainer that he learned a lot from his older, more established teammates (esp Carlos who basically found Lando in a basket outside his driver's room door). but all of those guys have either been his friends for years or he's known of them/interacted with them for years. but then Oscar arrives as this unknown and he's so mature for his age and doesn't seem easily fazed. and not only does he not demand that Lando help him out he also doesn't try to ingratiate himself with Lando to help out his own image (and remember, Oscar was enemy number one with McLaren, Alpine and Daniel Ricciardo fans - and still is for some of them). didn't try to launch a bromance the way most of these partnerships do (with varying success).
he did the most jarring, unlikely thing ever: he stepped back, fully embraced his role as the number 2 driver, accepted whoever Lando decided to be, and let Lando determine the relationship. he showed up and celebrated every high Lando had without fail. Lando was handed unconditional respect and he got it from a teammate who himself has refused to pander or be insincere. Oscar risks looking boring or withdrawn rather than dance. and he's shown nothing but respect - and fondness! - for the kaleidoscope of personality that Lando is.
because!
Oscar was a Lando fanboy for 8 years! Oscar knew Lando before meeting Lando in a way no one else in racing has! Oscar is not Just a Guy he watches, he listens, he cares! Oscar doesn't seem to have a lick of toxic masculinity about him and all of the F1 elders who know him say what an old soul he is and how mature he is!
and we know already that Lando felt he learned things from Oscar in a racing sense. so for Lando to go so far as to say that his rookie teammate helped remind him how to stay true to himself is just !! especially considering that their personalities have equally been a source of being misunderstood in ways that are often extremely infuriating.
also, Oscar complements so much about Lando in terms of how they approach their careers and media duties and racing and I think in a lot of ways Lando doesn't fully know how to feel about that? bc Lando's someone who can blur the lines between a person being helpful to him and someone he needs in his life. each year we get that adorable dinner photo of all the people who've supported Lando's career for the past 10 years. so to find himself pinging back and forth so well with Oscar's approach to all those things, there's got to be a concern of "am I going to start needing this guy in my life too?" it's way too early for that to be a major concern of course but I feel like it could be there.
"better than I feel like I remember I was when I started" "I think that is something that I've gotten a lot better with over the years - I know how to deal with all of these things much better myself now. I have a lot of respect for Oscar in how he was able to stay so calm in a new environment, in Formula 1, on the big stage."
okay this part !! bc I remember the anon I got who meticulously pointed out how Lando has been doing for Oscar what he remembers wishing he'd had for himself when he started out in F1. and that as Alex Albon said it's not really the natural M.O. of a more experienced driver to mentor a competitor or a teammate. it's not team sports - each driver is there to beat everyone else, esp their teammate as they're essentially driving the same car. but Lando's soft heart !! Lando's not like everyone else!
and that's the thing I always make sure to state is that while Carlos and Daniel were both definitely overwhelmed at times over how much Lando needs to have that tender connection with the men in his life - and have it above all else - they weren't doing him wrong at all by placing their own performance in F1 above him. they're what honestly every other guy in F1 is. and Alex is honestly probably one of the most empathetic, soft-hearted guys on the current grid so for him to say it's not in his responsibilities to nurture another driver is pretty definitive as a rule - especially bc he ended up doing that to some degree with Logan (the 'seeing myself in him' explains that a lot). but yeah, Lando's warm soft heart overruling his racing driver head is extremely unusual in F1. like basically unheard of.
and while it's so much healthier that Carlos and Daniel became the good friends that they did and specifically NOT Lando's teammates, I wrote this whole thing about how Lando went into the partnership with Oscar unusually guarded. not only was he clearly unsure about the idea of being the older and experienced teammate, he definitely wasn't interested in leaping into another bromance only to discover that the other guy has the exact same bromance with about five other dudes in his life.
Lando doesn't at all seem do that - at least from a fandom distance, he seems to form unique friendships with each person in his life. he may be a will-o-wisp person and be difficult to pin down and get hold of sometimes, but the people he decides to form a relationship with are locked into that for good (from what we can tell). he'll do the bromance bit with Carlos and Daniel that they want but he also demanded that he have some specific definition among all their other friends.
Lando is a ✧Me✧ and if you don't want to respect that then you don't get to have his time. I think it's even why he has a joking "rivalry" with some of his friends' girlfriends. bc - and I emphasize this is all humorous and not serious - there's a little bit of a rivalry for attention there! Lando seem to kinda end up making men in love with him in some way (paternal, brotherly, friendship, confused and horny, etc). he meets them and they're kinda fucked up about him forever in some way. dudes especially tend to clump their friends by category and hang out in groups apart from maybe one super close best friend. but it seems like Lando can't be lumped in with anybody else. he's almost like the unattainable hot girl who's a model and also independently wealthy and also a gamer and also F1 superstar that guys just desperately want to orbit as closely as they're allowed. if she says 'wanna hang out' they'd leave their grandma's funeral and rush over.
so like, all of Lando's complexities and the uniqueness of his career and his weird and usually frenetic personal journey considered - I'm just slightly insane over the fact that he said Oscar helped him remember to just be himself and to try to find calm out in the circus. what a wonderful thing to say about someone you've only known for a year and who hasn't in any way pushed for a relationship beyond what you want from them.

🏎️💨 THE FORMULA 1 TAG GAME🏎️💨
creds to @avida-heidia-5 for making this
thanks to @vinvantae for tagging me !!
tagging: most of my moots have already been tagged so anyone who wants to do it !!
1. who or what got you into f1?
legitimately, i kept seeing this charles leclerc imagine pop up in my “for you” thing and so i read it and then proceeded to look charles leclerc up and then i ended up hyper-fixating on it and now it’s almost my entire personality
2. who was the very first f1 driver you supported? do you support them now? have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?
daniel ricciardo!! although charles kind of pushed me toward the direction of f1, daniel was the first driver i really got attached too (i will admit it was partially because of dts). he’s still one of my favorite drivers, him and charles are tied for first but i really want to see him do well and i will forever be so sad that i didn’t get into formula 1 until he was in his second year with mclaren :(
3. who’s your current favorite f1 driver?
while daniel is also my favorite driver, charles might be a little higher than him simply because i am a ferrari fan and the fact that charles drives for my favorite team gives him a little boost.
4. is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? what made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?
honestly max and daniel will forever one of my favorite teammate pairings just because i feel like they’re so good together (they’re also so goofy and i love to see how max acts around him cause i think it’s so funny). i also LOVE seb and kimi just because i love the way they interact with each other😭
5. do your parents, siblings, or relatives have a favorite team and/or favorite drivers?
unfortunately i am the only one in my family that really likes f1. my older brother knows a little bit and he likes checo and lewis but he doesn’t really keep up with anything, and my mom likes charles only because i like charles💀
6. do you have any favorite races? are there any that stand out to you the most?
spa 2019, monza 2020, são paulo 2022, and singapore 2023. são paulo and singapore have a special place in my heart cause são paulo was the first f1 race i ever watched and i think it’s really cool that that was george russell’s first race win, and i really love singapore because that was the first time i’ve ever experienced ferrari winning a race and i was literally jumping around in my room freaking out when it happened.
7. do you have a favorite circuit? can be from the past or from the current calendar.
i like a couple but i’d say my favorite is probably monza. some others i really like are bahrain, suzuka, and singapore!!
8. have you ever been to an f1 race in real life? free to tell us your experience going to one of you’d like.
sadly no!! i unfortunately live in the u.s. and i feel like our gp tickets are so incredibly expensive plus i don’t live in a state close enough to any of our tracks. i have been to an indycar race however (which i know isn’t that same thing) but it was a lot of fun and i’d really recommend it if you have the chance to go cause it is a lot more affordable compared to f1!!
9. have you ever met an f1 driver in real life?
i have not, which i’m kind of happy about cause while i think it would be amazing, i am so incredibly awkward and would definitely make it uncomfortable because of how awkward i am. i have however met a couple of indycar drivers (some of those being pato o’ward and marcus armstrong) which was really cool!! i meant to tell marcus that i loved screaming meals but i got too nervous and just asked him to sign my hat🫠
10. do you have a favorite f1 car? if so, what is it?
not necessarily my favorite car but i LOVED the williams livery this year!!
11. do you have a favorite one win wonder?
monza 2020!! while i’m not a huge fan of him as much as i used to be, i really liked pierre when i first got into f1 and i just loved that he was able to get his first win at monza. i also think the atmosphere after he won was so amazing especially after what he went through with red bull the season before and i just love that he was able to prove them wrong and prove that he is capable of winning races and that he didn’t need red bull to do that !!
12. do you have any favorite quotes from the f1 world? this can be either inspirational or hilarious.
i have one for both! so i actually (literally today) just got an “enjoy the butterflies” tattoo (also now i match with lucy, which was not at all planned but i think it’s super funny🤭) and i also love kimi yelling “GLOVES! STEERING WHEEL AND GLOVES!” because i think it’s so funny and also because i just love kimi.

vro0m’s rewatch - 164.1/310
2015 US GP
Okay so... if you’ve followed the story, I have like 75 gifs for this one GP. Hence it’s gonna be in 3 parts. Deal with it.
This one is prerace + the race + the cooldown room.
Good thing f1fullraces reuploaded the 2015 season because I couldn't find this GP anywhere at the time I downloaded the races. Uhhh… there's a weirdly high number of views for this race on the website? Did something happen? (Well I’m laughing very hard at past me being a dumbass retrospectively.)
Oh. It was a wet delayed quali. Nico is on pole again. Ohhhh right Lewis can win the title here if he beats Seb by 9 points and Nico by 2 points. It's not raining anymore but it looks wet and cold.
Quali report. Actually the session was so delayed it took place on Sunday morning! Sainz spun and hit the wall. Seb almost lost it but just brushed the barrier. Ericsson also almost lost it but managed to keep it on track. Raikkonen as well. Jenson, Verstappen, Kvyat and Lewis all also went sideways at the same place. Q3 simply didn't take place. Too much rain. That's how Nico ended up on pole, with his Q2 time.
Lewis is second on the grid though, followed by Daniel, Kvyat, Perez, Hulkenberg, Massa, Verstappen, Alonso and Grosjean. Where the fuck are the Ferraris?! Did they struggle that bad? Oh, they're 14th and 18th. That's bad.
Tumblr media
Lewis says the fans have been amazing staying out in the rain. He hopes the weather stays OK so they can put on a good show for them. He doesn't love but doesn't mind the tricky conditions.
Tumblr media
It'll be a hard race, probably the hardest this year. He's excited about it. About winning in America, he dodges the question about the title and says he's had the privilege of winning there a couple of times and the support has always been great. He says this weekend is definitely the most support he's ever had there so he hopes he can make everyone proud and he'll do his best out there.
Tumblr media
At the time, no British driver has won back to back titles which is hilarious retrospectively. Brundle agrees with Simon that in his opinion it would make him a legend of the sport. Then Simon points out that Lewis revels in the light and Hill admits that he had his doubts about it at the start of the season but Lewis definitely proved him wrong and he can do whatever he wants and still win. (Yeah. Shut up next time Hill.) They also agree that being a legend doesn't necessarily has to do with winning championships as some legends haven't won any. (But that's not something you need to worry about there you idiots.)
One interesting statistic I wanna relay here because it's particularly relevant to our rewatch is : at that point he's won 42 times. Exactly half of these wins happened in a McLaren, over the course of 6 years. The other half, obviously, happened in a Mercedes, and that's his 3rd year with them. It tells you all there is to know about how bad McLaren was doing, and how bad he was doing at McLaren, and how actually genuinely dominant Mercedes is at this point. It could have gone very differently, had he not moved there and then.
Also I think more generally (and I'm sorry I'm not trying to bring anyone down with this) it's noteworthy that McLaren was actually doing good and then they fucked up in 2009 with their terribly shit car and it took them actual years to climb back through the field. So. Yeah. Realistically. We might wanna keep that in mind in 2023. Unfortunately.
Let's carry on. For a reason I cannot fathom they allowed Brundle to drive the W06. He himself says "believe it or not". Lewis asks if he's gonna ride Nico's or his. I don't understand the answer, but I think it's his, because that's the face he makes when he hears it.
Tumblr media
Brundle asks how it is to drive it. Lewis thinks. "You're gonna be at Silverstone, it's gonna be probably cold, it's probably gonna be wet… if it's in the wet oh you're gonna have some fun" he says with a smile. Brundle chuckles. Cut to Silverstone. "Is that rain?" he asks. It is indeed. I don't care about him driving. I just paid attention because Lewis was there at first. But he's exclaiming, he can't believe the performance of this car, even in such conditions. He's baffled.
Now the sun is coming out.
Ohhhh actually I went to read the Wikipedia article and the Ferrari drivers got 10 place grid penalties because they changed their PUs, which makes a lot more sense than them doing this bad. Overall there were a lot of updates during this GP but the Mercs only added "ears" at the top of the airbox to improve the ERS cooling.
The cars are on their way to the grid. We hear that Nico complained that there was something wrong with the front tyres. "They're not working at all". Someone answered him that it sounds like they're just cold. But they agree on front wing changes anyway. Lewis also says he feels like "the fronts are gonna take a beating." Nico is seen in deep conversation with the engineers. Lewis is also talking with one and Bono as well. We see Lewis an unusual lot on the grid. He walks around, checking out Nico's car from afar, it seems.
They're all on inters. It's time.
Formation lap.
Lewis says it's drying out "real quickly."
And they're racing !
THE MERCS ARE WHEEL TO WHEEL RIGHT AWAY AND LEWIS FORCES NICO OFF THE TRACK AGAIN AND IT'S YELLOW FLAGS AT THE BACK WHILE NICO LOSES PLACES BUT THE REDBULL ARE COMING FOR LEWIS THEY HAVE BETTER GRIP! There's a lot of spray but Nico gained a place and is now attacking Daniel for P3 but he can't make it! The yellow flag keeps flashing on and off! Kvyat couldn't attack Lewis and the Mercs tyres must be warming up at the end of the first lap because they seem to have better control now. The top 10 reads Lewis, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Nico, Perez, Hulkenberg, Seb, Verstappen, Jenson, Raikkonen. It means the Ferraris gained 7 and 8 places respectively in one lap. That's more like it. Grosjean says he got hit and has a puncture. Alonso says he has a puncture. Valtteri is getting a new nose. I guess there were good reasons for that flashing yellow flag. Nasr is going around missing half of his front wing as well. Alright so the 2 Saubers collided, that explains Nasr's damage. A Marussia is retiring. There's debris on the track. It's slightly chaotic right now. We need replays. DRS gets enabled and Kvyat is in Lewis' range or rather Lewis is in Kvyat's range? Idk. Anyway, he also set the fastest lap so it might not be over yet.
On the start replay we see the contact between Alonso and Massa (?) in the first corner. We see Lewis and Nico also touched wheels. Honestly it's the second time Lewis gets ahead that way and it's not pretty.
Kvyat is closing in on Lewis. There's a third way battle between Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and Sainz for P8. AND A VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR? What for? Oh the debris, maybe? Everything slows down. Kvyat overtook Lewis when Lewis slowed down for the VSC then let him back ahead. Similarly, it's unclear whether Sainz overtook Hulkenberg before the VSC or not. It's confusing. The VSC is indeed for the debris. It was getting dangerous, it was on the racing line. Lewis says it's slippery and asks if Nico's also complaining. Bono says the tyre temps are at the very top of their operating window. Valtteri retires. Crofty says Kvyat's overtake earlier was actually genuine and nothing to do with the safety car. Kvyat wonders why Lewis is so slow. Brundle thinks it's precisely because his tyres are overheating. The VSC is ending. Nico jumps Ricciardo. Brundle says he thinks Lewis is backing them up to bring "his team-mate into play a little bit" which. No probably not. So that's Kvyat 0.4 away, then Nico 0.4 further, and Daniel 0.8 down. Nico attacks, and overtakes Kvyat. Lewis needs to get away. Daniel : "how the fuck did Nico pass us?" Brundle thinks it's because Lewis was backing them up. I still don't believe so. Why would he. They won the constructor title already.
Lap 10 : Lewis, Nico, Kvyat, Daniel. All less than one second away from each other. Perez, Seb, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Sainz, Hulkenberg. The inters are starting to fall off. Grosjean pits for the softs. Kvyat is closing in on Nico but can't attack. Grosjean just went wide ahead of Lewis on his dry tyres. Lewis is starting to pull away slightly, getting Nico out of his DRS zone. Grosjean retires. Kvyat attacks but goes wide and Daniel seizes the occasion and gets ahead of his team-mate! And right away, he slips past Nico as well! He's frantic on the radio. "That was not a safe coming back onto the track!" he claims. We see a replay. Nico swerved away when Kvyat joined back but uh. I don't know. I don't think there was an imminent collision there. Raikkonen is pissed as well : "why don't I get the DRS if I'm up so close?!" Sainz got ahead of him. Daniel sets the fastest lap. He's only 0.2 behind Lewis! Ffffuck. But Lewis widens the gap again. Raikkonen got back ahead of Sainz but they damn near collided. Sainz isn't giving up. Now Nico sets the fastest lap and Daniel attacks Lewis! But he doesn't get ahead. Phew. There's a lot happening. Raikkonen is swooping on Verstappen, they're wheel to wheel and they almost touch but Max stays ahead for now. DANIEL OVERTAKES LEWIS NO! FUCK OFF! NICO OVERTAKES LEWIS AS WELL NNNNNO! OH HE COULDN'T DO IT thank god. Raikkonen : "That guy keeps pushing me off the circuit every time when I’m next to him. So if that’s legal then I will do the same next time." He's talking about Verstappen, unsurprisingly. He's told they're checking with Charlie. Verstappen attacks Seb for P6, and he wins this one, but Seb comes back, but Max keeps the place, and Raikkonen is just behind, that's some close racing for sure. BUT HE GOES WIDE! SEB IS BACK AHEAD AND RAIKKONEN ATTACKS. SEB ALSO GOES WIDE BUT KEEPS THE PLACE AND RAIKKONEN CAN'T FIND A PATH. AND NICO ATTACKS LEWIS AGAIN, THEY'RE WHEEL TO WHEEL AND LEWIS HAS TO FALL BACK AND KVYAT IS BASICALLY ON THEM AS WELL, LEWIS DEFENDS AND HE'S CALLED IN TO PIT come on it's time! Get the tyres! Get back in the lead! Daniel sets another fastest lap. Let's see how the slicks are doing. Seb pitted as well. A few backmarkers already did.
On lap 20, Daniel pits. Nico pits. Kvyat pits. Ohhh no. Kvyat is shaky out of the exit and Lewis is coming at full speed but goes wide. He's down in P4, the undercut didn't work. Meanwhile Jenson, who got on the slicks earlier, now sets the fastest lap. This is going to be good. Lewis is already on Kvyat's heels. OH AND RAIKKONEN IS IN THE GRAVEL AND INTO THE WALL! No big shunt, thankfully, but he's out of the race, no? He gets away after furiously turning his steering wheel back and forth to get his wheel unstuck from the barrier. Crazy. He needs a new nose.
Now Seb sets the fastest lap? Lewis is struggling and making mistakes, now. Focus! AND NICO IS BACK IN THE LEAD!
Tumblr media
AND LEWIS IS BACK ON THE PODIUM! GET THEM REDBULLS, BOYS! Come on! They overtook them basically at the same time. Incredible. Nico sets the fastest lap. No! It's Hulkenberg! You know it's a crazy race when the fastest lap jumps from car to car. Now Seb is closing on Kvyat, go go go ! YES ! He's ahead! Massa is called to retire the car. And Hulkenberg overtook Sainz for P7. Lewis is gaining on Daniel. But he's definitely losing on Nico, who just set another fastest lap. Here we go! Come on… Come on… Come on… HERE WE GO, LEWIS IS BACK IN P2. Raikkonen is called to retire. That's the 5th DNF so far. Oh and here's the sixth car, Ericsson has stopped on the track. Is that going to be a safety car? Yellow flags. Safety car. Ouuuh boy. That's gonna mix it up again. Nico is told to stay out. Seb pits for mediums to go to the end? Jenson, Perez, Hulkenberg pit. "Is there a big temperature difference between our tyres, because I have no grip out here?" Lewis asks. Bono tries to quiet him down : "Not a big difference, Lewis, just keep doing what you’re doing, working those tyres. We have fuel to burn."
We hit lap 30 under the safety car. The order goes Nico, Lewis, Daniel, Kvyat, Seb, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Perez, Jenson, and Sainz. Lewis : "Is there a different line into T1 because I don’t know, braking is quite slippery, it’s easy to lock up, are drivers going deep?" Bono : "I’m afraid I can’t comment on lines, Lewis." It's the new radio guidelines, I mentioned them previously. Nico is seriously backing them up to the point they have to take action to not collide with each other. Here we go again. They're all neatly lined up in the pit straight, then Kvyat locks up and goes wide into the first corner. He's now P5, behind Seb. That might have been a good gamble, putting him on mediums during the safety car… Seb attacks Daniel and can't quite make it but then he does and he's up on the podium, easily. But Daniel overtakes him back! Not so easy then. AGAIN! Seb is ahead of Daniel! And behind them, Verstappen overtakes Kvyat for P5. Kvyat moves out of line to come back at him but instead Max moves on the outside to attack Daniel in the next corner! Kvyat goes off! Hulkenberg takes P6. It's now Verstappen under pressure. Lewis sets the fastest lap. He's now closing on Nico, he's just half a second away. Hulkenberg attacks Ricciardo and THEY TOUCHED! Hulkenberg's car is damaged and he's falling down the pack, and stops on the grass. Lewis sets another fastest lap. Daniel has damage as well. Kvyat is catching him. Sainz gets a 5 second penalty for speeding in the pitlane. VSC? Okay… Annoying. Pit stops then. Nico, Daniel, Kvyat. Lewis is informed Seb who’s behind him is probably going to the end. Now what. They should have pitted him as well. "How much of a disadvantage am I in, with the tyre situation?" he asks. "We’re going to have a look at the tyres now mate. Make an assessment," Bono says. The VSC is ending already. Now if he pits he'll lose badly. It's lap 40.
Alonso and Sainz overtake Perez for P6 and P7. "How big a gap do I need to the people behind?" Lewis now asks. Bono answers "So we need to find another ten seconds to Vettel. Not sure if we’re going to be able to do it on this tyre set." There's no fucking way man! Of course not! Oh this is so frustratiiiiinnnng. There's 15 laps to go. He can't hold them off. He just locked up as well. Nico is closing on Seb, now. He overtakes him. OH KVYAT CRASHED! WTF. Well that's another safety car they better pit Lewis immediately. Kvyat is okay. He just lost it on his own. That's an 8th DNF. Honestly wtf is this race. Lewis does pit indeed. Interestingly, Seb pits as well! So Nico is in the lead, Lewis is P2, weirdly enough Verstappen is P3, and Seb is P4. Then, amazingly, it's the two McLarens of Jenson and Alonso, I guess the updates work? Perez, Ricciardo in P8, Maldonado P9, and Sainz P10. Let me actually go to the end of the standings because you know what? It's just two more cars! Rossi, P11, Nasr P12. All the others DNFd.
10 laps to go. That's gonna be an intense ending. Nico backs them up again. The safety car comes in. "Okay Lewis you'll have 10 laps remaining, just keep it nice and clean," chimes Bono. Here we go. Seb attacks Verstappen but can't make it yet. The two Mercs are flying ahead. Seb overtakes Verstappen. There's now a 3 way fight for P5 between Alonso, Perez and Daniel. I don't know where Jenson went. Lewis is 1.3 seconds away from Nico. LEWIS IS AHEAD! WHAT?! Oh Nico made a mistake! He went wide! Fastest lap for Lewis. Seb asks "what happened there?" He's told Nico went off line and to try and catch him. Sainz overtakes Ricciardo for P7. JENSON OVERTAKES THEM BOTH FOR P7?! Unbelievable. Nico sets the fastest lap. Listen. Listen.
Give me a second.
Hear me out.
P6 : Alonso.
P7 : Jenson +0.176
P8 : Sainz +0.375
P9 : Ricciardo +0.392
P10 : Maldonado +0.287
P11 : Nasr +0.721
Can you imagine? The chaos.
JENSON OVERTAKES ALONSO FOR P6 he's flying, there's already a one second gap between them and it's just been a few corners! Sainz overtakes Alonso for P7, and Maldonado overtakes Daniel for P9. Now Maldonado overtakes Alonso as well. And Nasr overtook Ricciardo. Alonso complains he has no power. He asks what they can do and then says he's coming in. "Fernando stay out, stay out, we're still in the points." He says okay, once I'm not in the points anymore, I come in.
5 laps to go. As things stand, Lewis wins his 4th title here. Bernie and Elton John are watching?
4 laps to go.
3 laps to go… Sainz overtakes Jenson for P6.
2 laps to go! Seb is closing on Nico! He might still prevent Lewis from winning his title today?
Final lap!!! Seb is 0.6 seconds away, he has the DRS!
Oh my god oh my god oh my god
IT'S THE END OF THE RACE! LEWIS WINS HIS 3RD CHAMPIONSHIP!
Oh and I'm so happy Seb will be up on that podium with him.

"Okay Lewis, I think you've done it mate!" we hear Bono's message as he went through the line. "Just need to see what Nico does… That is it! World champion, pal! World champion!"
Paddy Lowe echoes Bono : "Three times world champion, Lewis !"
We hear some heavy breathing. "I'm feeling it pal," Bono speaks again, "I'm feeling it." Then Paddy again : "How does that sound Lewis? Three times world champion."
Finally we hear Lewis, his voice is breaking. "It’s the greatest moment of my life. Thank you guys so much. That was… I’m just so grateful, thank you. To my family, I love you all. Thank you."
Then Bono reins him in. "We got to look after the race car, mate, we’re going to need it next week." But Lewis goes ahead and does some donuts anyway.

He's out of breath, sniffling, emotional as always, he steps away from the camera, tries to find some space but they're being very annoying with him. Then he hugs Paddy Lowe.

His reaction is weirdly calm compared to last year's. Nico throws his cap at him in an ugly gesture that you’ve probably already seen a hundred times.

Paddy Lowe stares him down.
