Here’s my first impressions.

Warning! a loooong post, squealing, incoherent thoughts smashed together, and crying ahead. A lot of crying.

OH NO. They really started it like this. I’m shivering in bed rn. It’s haunting and beautiful and too short. Is that marching?? That’s marching, are they going to war now omg hold on—

[I didn’t include the audio for Wonderland because I hit the limit and ALSO you should go stream it on the KQ channel instead ;) hehe]

The transition into this was spectacular. The marching just became the beat wooooah! HONGJOONG AHJFKSL YES that’s how you start a song. Seonghwa and Yunho, beautiful. Wooyoung!! sounds amazing!! Seonghwa’s low voice o I was not prepared. San helloooo I love the instrumentation at this part. Jongho, as expected with the high note. Oh OH KAJA!! oooooohhhhh man the chorus goes hard I can’t wait to see the choreo. The production on this is spectacular. FiX oN MiNgiiiiii go off oml 🔥 YEOSANG 👏🏻 GET 👏🏻 THOSE 👏🏻 LINES 👏🏻 this is a head banging song I’m head banging rn. The way they bring it back right before the chorus *chef’s kiss* This is overwhelming man. Jongho with the bridge yussss he and San sound amazing. Wait they were right it is like Hala Hala they added both parts of the chorus together!! It’s almost over isn’t it. Yeah it’s over. Ok I need to breathe,,,

It’s starting kinda like a sad song this isn’t a sad song is it?? SANIIIIEEE! Aw this is cute I like it. Hongjoooooooong! I love this rap it reminds me of something. Ooh prechorus?? It’s so pretty oh No here’s the chorus— oh EDM?!!? OKAY!! Wait do I bop or cry 🙊omg Yeosang!!!! oh my baby you sound amazing. Harmonies 😭 harmonies omg there are harmonies... Mingi! He didn’t say fix on :(( short but slick rap as always. I’m still trying to figure out what they’re saying in this chorus I don’t wanna blast it too loud everyone else is asleep I think... hhhhhh!! Mingi and Hongjoong SINGING IN THE BRIDGE holy cow im gonna lose it they sound beautiful YES THANK U THIS IS WHAT I WANTED. Wowwwww high note 🙌There’s something really really nostalgic about this song,, I am undone. The harmonies omg I can’t take this it’s like they know how much I love harmonies, unfair.

OMG— throwback???????? This sounds so 80s YEEEESSSS ! San!! New beginning fairy?? He sounds heavenly I can’t. Mingi, he’s singing again I can’t stop smiling this is my new fave thing. This prechorus, idk what to say it’s amazing. WOOYOUNG JUNG WOOYOUNG NO NO NO NO HES SINGING THE CHORUS AFHSJLSLE Jongho ur vocals are sweet honey please have mercy it’s only like the 4th song and I’m crying already. Hongjoong my boy, this style of rap holy cow. Did someone tell him this is my fave style of rap, because— oh, he’s still going?? Ah this is going on repeat the rest of today 🥰 Yeosang I couldn’t be happier you sound gorgeous and Yunho woah their voices match well. WOOYOUNG AGAIN!! This part was made for him it has to be. JONGHO! SO PLEASE!! This bridge I’m just a mess of tears now they are really singing their hearts out. Is it too early to have a favourite?

Ugh all these songs are ending so abruptly I’m never ready for the next one. Oh I’ve heard his.. aHA AHAAAAA I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT this is from the teasers. I had the teasers on repeat this bgm alone is. so. cool. Yes the Mingi rap aaaaaaaaahdhsjkdflsl but we can hear it this time lol. woah it’s not over yet. The beginning of Treasure! Hongjoong singing the beginning of Treasure again but different lyrics?? I need to look them up later oh what if it’s like they found their treasure,, no I can’t take it where are the tissues the ending is so sad whyyyyuyyy

Yay there is already a fun flavour in this song! Hongjoong your voice is so rich in the low register daaaaang I need more of this. Seonghwa is that you? I feel like I haven’t heard his voice since Wonderland I’m sorry seonghwa my bff I’m getting whiplash trying to hear everyone’s parts but you killed it. These lyrics!! This is a hype song fs. THE BEAT DROP AAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAH!! “Ayyy we are gonna win” YES YOU ARE BOYS! Oh shoot I said that out loud I hope no one heard. Okay yes this is my new hype song no one is allowed to be discouraged listening to this. Oop “aha” Hongjoong hakdlaplajql I squealed again. Aw the rap verses were short but still slayed. This song is so fast I can’t keep up but I love it I am feeling this. The low voices and then the beat drop I can’t FUNCTION THIS IS SPECTACULAR !!!!! You are gonna wiiiiiin. This reminds me of Pirate King the altered voice and then adding a harmony the second time, anyone feel me? Mingi singing in the bridge again yes I love this. Ooo EDM break aaaahhah go crazy go stupidddd! I want a choreo for this, I need a choreo for this. Woah the instrumental is very unusual here. And it ended like that with the piano, deconstructing the elements of the song. Oh I need a second listen for musical reasons but we gotta move on.

This album is moving way too quickly we’re halfway done ripppp. I love the instrumental here it’s super slick. I’m already enjoying this very much. Oh high notes San!! Vocal line has popped off, exceeds expectations 100% Aww hi Mingi. Ah thank God the chorus is sweet and full of riffs wowowow this is a sharp contrast from last song. YEOSANG!!! My heart jumps every time I hear him, you don’t know how hard I prayed for him to have more lines. Hongjoong! What are these voices in the background?. Adorable, this is adorable aaaaahaha!! Oh it’s “we are one, we stay one” that they spoiled in ANEWZ I seeeee. This chorus ugh this whole song I love I just have the biggest smile on my face while also sobbing yall don’t understand. The bridge ahh idek what to say I’m so happy with this. You boys make me so proud I hope you know that 😭 !! The voices are back! This is literally so cute hELP

Here comes THANK U I’m not ready ok deep breaths. Whaaaa? I’ve never been more caught off guard in my life that guitar... Yeehaw? Is this a yeehaw song what-? Hongjoong’s singing wait I have to go back I missed it. His voice I— digging my grave. Wait why does this sound lowkey country ohhh dear say sike ah no alright the CHORUS mmm I knew it would be a feel good song. That echoing thing after the chorus is cool. Mingiiii! Did he not say fix on again?? This rap is too cute noooooo oml why Mingi why my jaw is on the floor I can’t believe he’s capable of this.. Ok I like it I’ve decided I like this. I was surprised at first bc I’m not a country fan and it sounded like it was about to be a country song 😂 but this is a bop!! “Gomawo” 😭 no gomawo yourself. Thank you for being on my side 🥺 It’s a hands clapping song. Yes Jongho go off!!! Oh I just gasped the biggest gasp the ending riff was beautiful

Sunrise. Okay deep breaths. I’m gonna just listen and try to not think about the fact Hongjoong cried writing this song. Let’s go. .... oh. OH. Oh it’s soft. I’m soft 🥺 ahhh man they sound so good. This— the background music... it’s doing me in. Aww Mingi. Ahh no this sounds sad whyyy I’m afraid to see the lyrics dangit. (0:41) I just dropped my phone. K that scared me but the lyrics just shot me in the heart. !!!!! I gasped again and now I’m coughing hang on I gotta pause. Just keep it up... boys you outdid yourselves. This GUITAR HOLY CHEESE AND CRACKERS ITS AMAZING. *stomp stomp clap* Hongjoong hiiiii wow this rap right here, I only caught half the lyrics but I know exactly what he is saying ah man. We’ve added instruments in the back. Oh Jongho that was such a clear note the vowel was perfect there. This chorus I can’t. Yeah ok I’m crying again something about the guitar I . Cant type. Oh man. Oh OH OH the bridge the BRIDGE THE BRIDGE everything the vocals the background music. Okay here’s our real stomp stomp clap moment. Ah ok wiping the tears now. They sound great. Hongjoong aaaahh what a way to end the song.

That was an experience I hope I get to breathe during this but I already know I won’t. Um.. it’s piano... for like a solid 20 seconds and it’s slightly jazzy are we getting a ballad?? Our first real ballad!! Eeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! Seonghwa yessss 🥰 Oh you guys I’ve wanted to hear a ballad from him for so long you don’t even know. Wait everyone sounds so perfect I can’t even describe this. Yunho baby yesss your voice. Wooyoung oml SAN ahhh San your transitions are stunning. Jongho our ballad king it’s like he’s barely even trying and it sounds amazing. Lovely lovely lovely. Mingiiiii he’s singing yet again. Hongjoong too!! Yes oh yes this is it. Their voices all being showcased so perfectly. I’m amazed how well they can all fit this style just as well as they can fit a song like Win. I have one criticism only so far and yall already know what it is. Yeosang still could’ve gotten more lines in this one :_( This is the last song before Beginning of the End oh no. Nooooo I don’t want it to be over. Oh? OH? Yeosang! Yeosangggggg!! Omg I have goosebumps he said NO IM TAKING OVER it’s MY SONG NOW! Wow amazing. The structure of this has been so so interesting I’m definitely going back to analyse. No it’s over...

I’m scared. I’m crying again noo it hasn’t even started jeez pull yourself together. Ok but before I start I really don’t want it to be over and not in a way that implies I want more songs just thinking about how... this is Ep Fin right? The end. Obviously not of ATEEZ (God forbid) it’s only been a year and they’re slaying it I mean absolutely knocking it out of the park each Ep bigger and bolder than the last, they aren’t afraid to try things and when they do they hit the nail on the head. But still this is the end of an era, a storyline too if I’m correct. And it’s just a surreal experience to see it come to a close. ATEEZ, I don’t know where you’re taking us next but I trust you guys and I know it’s going to be amazing.

Ok anyway let’s start the song 🤣 crackling noise? Fire? Ok it’s orchestral. VERY orchestral. “Open your eyes” I felt that San. They were open but I just opened them again. This orchestra is really really moving and cinematic I love it. I see what this is, we’re going Intro: Long Journey except Outro version which is fuller, richer, even more epic and emotional. Oh boy I’m really crying now. Idek what to say again I’m speechless. Oh it swells just like Intro!! Is it the end? Woah???????? What is this? .....SAN?? Wait wait wait it’s over? Like that? No hang on. Waaaait what was that? Seriously that was very strange. I’m not imagining things am I? No does this have something to do with upcoming albums? I’m so confused 😭 it sounded rly cool and spooky whatever it was. Well. Okay! Yeah I guess that’s it. That was the last straw. I should really try to go back to sleep I only have a few hours till I have to get up. But now I’m probably going to go write something, that music was really inspiring. Yeah I think I said what I wanted to honestly! Again I just want to reiterate how proud I am, and remind you to go stream!!!!

like what you’re doing to me | one | s.m. series

a/n: the cutest social media au everrr. @mendesmood made the instagram edits (and yes i realize they say y/n and not karli king...i don’t gaf bc they’re too cute get over it), I made the twitter edits.

“Hey guys, it’s Karli King killin’ it with ten songs in ten minutes where we hit shuffle on an artist’s songs and mashup ten songs into one. Go ahead and hit that like button if you like what you hear. And leave a comment letting me know what you want me to do next! Go ahead and smash that red subscribe button if you haven’t already, and now, let’s just jump into it.”

Shawn didn’t know Karli, but Shawn knew Karli. He’d been watching Karli’s videos for at least a year, when he’d randomly happened upon one while in the middle of a youtube rabbit hole, as one does. She’d been doing ten One Direction songs in ten minutes, and Shawn was just completely blown away with the amount of work she put into her craft. As far as he’d seen, there was no one else on this platform doing something like this.

“Today we’re doing Julia Michaels. If you’re new here, first thing we do is play some shuffle roulette, as I like to call it.”

Shawn was sitting at the airport, waiting during a three hour layover, airpods in, the rest of the world out. In situations like this, the more closed off he looked, the more likely he was to get to spend this time completely uninterrupted. That’s why Shawn had specifically not watched any of Karli’s videos in the last two weeks, so he’d have plenty of content to catch up on.

“Okay, first thing first, Spotify. It’s the cure to all my problems.”

On Shawn’s phone he could see Karli’s video switch away from her face, to her laptop screen recording. She quickly pulled up Julia Michaels and hit shuffle.

“Okay, right off the bat we have Heaven. Which is a Fifty Shades of Grey song, so, okay.” Karli shrugged, “Moving on, number two we have Into You.” In the corner of the screen was a small picture of Karli’s reactions. She smiled, “Yes, god I love this song so fucking much. If you haven’t listened to Julia’s Inner Monologue Part One… I mean what are you even doing? It’s been out for like two weeks. Get on that. Okay, three. Anxiety with Selena Gomez in it, another good one. Listen, if we end up with all the songs of Inner Monologue here, I’ll be one happy girl.”

Shawn continued listening as she named off the next seven songs, including Issues, Uh Huh, her song with Niall, and to Shawn’s excitement his song with Julia, amongst a few others. Shawn was excited to see just how Karli pulled this one together, as Julia’s music all had quite different vibes depending on the album or person she was collabing with.

“So now, we have the songs, we’re gonna do a little planning. So one of the rules here. I sing the songs in the order of how I get them, no switcheroos. I have to sing at least a full line of the song, but can sing however much as I want after that. All together, it’s got to be under ten minutes.”

Shawn knew all the rules, but he never minded hearing them over and over again. He’d sit and listen to Karli’s voice all day if he could. She was a fucking genius, and Shawn had never seen anyone quite like her. And for a famous musician that was saying a lot.

Karli had just recently hit five million subscribers, which was crazy to think about. When he’d found her just a year ago she hadn’t hit one million yet. But that’s just what happened when you stuck to your craft and you had something unique, people will listen. They’ll find you captivating. And they’ll stick around. Shawn knew that first hand, though he wasn’t sure how he’d ended up being one of the lucky few.

His Youtube days hadn’t been successful like Karli’s had been, but he was grateful for them nonetheless.

“So the next part of planning, is putting some lyrics together. This process usually takes a couple hours. Let’s jump into the highlights.”

The video jumped forward to a sped up video of Karli in her planning stage. She was surrounded by papers, her notebook sprawled out, pen in hand, guitar on her lap. This was Shawn’s favorite part of the video. He loved watching people create music. Karli looked so in her element at this stage. Her work flowed effortlessly, and she never seemed to get too stuck on any one transition.

There were bits and pieces of the planning stage that Karli let the viewer in on, but for the most part a soft background song played while he watched her. After about two minutes the song faded, and Karli came back, seated and speaking to the camera.

“And now, the good stuff. Here’s Julia Michaels’ ten songs in ten minutes.”

Once again, Karli completely slayed it and Shawn was left breathless, wanting to chase after the feeling she left with him in each video

Since Shawn had tweeted out about Karli’s videos, she’d basically got not stop requests to do Shawn’s songs for ten songs in ten minutes. And she wasn’t exactly opposed to the idea. His music was good. But there was just a lingering sensation when you knew that the artist would watch your video. Singing songs and pretending like no one actually watched them is one thing, but singing songs and knowing that the artist your singing is going to watch is...different.

Well, it’s scary. That’s what it is.

And Karli has never been one to be scared of things, but Shawn Mendes was intimidating. He was big. He had over 30 million followers. Millions of crazed fans. Girls falling all over him, wanting to be loved by him. He was selling out stadiums. And he’d acknowledged her.

And not like in a low key way. He’d tweeted about her, saying he was going to catch up on her videos. Plural. Like he was going to watch more. Catch up. As if he had watched her in the past. There was just a lot to unpack here, and it all made Karli feel a way she hadn’t felt in a very long time.

But, in the end she knew what she’d be doing next.

What the fans want, the fans shall get after all.

So, Shawn might have her notifications on, but it really wasn’t a big deal. He just liked to make sure he saw all her new content. He didn’t always watch them right away. Like right now for instance, he was in the middle of a meeting. So no, he wouldn’t be clicking the notification. He swiped left on it, and stored that little fact away in his brain for a later time in the day. Or maybe even week. Who knows. Shawn didn’t that’s for sure.

Karli King Sings Ten Shawn Mendes Songs in Ten Minutes

Shawn might have lost his shit when he got home to see that this was what Karli had put out while he was in that meeting.

Shawn felt his heart rate increase a bit as the camera cut to Karli, covering her mouth and quietly giggling. She took a few exaggerated deep breaths.

“If you know anything about me, then that’s probably because you follow my twitter account. Where you might have see this little gem happen last week.”

Shawn and Karli’s short twitter exchange appeared on his phone screen.

“After this, lovely tweet from Mr. Mendes himself, you guys went on a rampage all but demanding I do this video. I’ll be honest,” Karli took a deep breath, “I don’t want to do this.”

Shawn felt his heart plummet.

“I am scared out of my ever loving mind.” She took another breath, “Knowing Shawn watches my videos is cool,” she smiled at the camera. “But singing his songs while I know he will almost certainly see it, is very intimidating. So, despite these fears, let’s do this...because what other choice do I have?” Karli tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.

Shawn listened to her go into her normal order of things. Picking songs, strategizing, singing. He watched the whole video on autopilot. Not even registering the contents. He couldn’t get her words out of his head it is very intimidating, I’m scared out of my ever loving mind. She was nervous to sing his songs. She was nervous to sing to him. Really that was the truth of it. She was singing his songs to him through a screen.

Shawn rewatched the video, this time listening. Noticing how she transitioned from Lost in Japan to Roses like a pro despite their extremely different vibes and meanings. How she moved from No Promises to Mutual and then into Particular Taste. It was a masterpiece.

It made Shawn want to return to his YouTube roots and make a cover of her cover of his songs. It was that good.

“You should tweet him back!” Allie kept telling Karli.

“No!” Karli insisted.

These twitter mentions were lovely and all, but Shawn wasn’t trying to make anything of it. Allie was trying to convince Karli she should invite Shawn to make a video with her. Under that pretense of going back to his “roots”. Karli would be lying if she didn’t think the possibility was at least a little bit appealing. Meeting Shawn Mendes to collab on a YouTube video after a few flattering tweets. It sounded like a fucking meet cute. And the romantic part of Karli, would love to give that a shot.

But that wasn’t real life. That was just fantasy.

“Karli, you’re missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime.” Allie pressed.

Karli rolled her eyes at her friend and roommate. “He’s just messing around, it’s not like he actually means anything by it.”

“You don’t know that for sure.”

Karli walked away from her and went into their living room. She plopped down on the couch, opening up Hulu. “Listen, I am not going to harass him for views. He has enough people using him for his fame already, I’m sure.”

Allie shrugged, sitting next to Karli. “It could be good for more than just views, is all I’m saying,” Allie winked at Karli before she laughed. “Now, turn on Brooklyn Nine-Nine already!”

“God, are you really watching that girls videos again?” Geoff asked Shawn as he walked passed him in the studio.

A light blush crept up Shawn’s neck. “She’s really talented man.”

Geoff hovered over his shoulder for a moment, “Really hot too.” He laughed at Shawn’s sputtering.

“That’s not it!”

“I think you mean, that’s not all of it.” Geoff laughed. “Man, dude relax. It’s okay to have a crush.”

Shawn double clicked the home button on his phone, swiping up to get rid of the video. He switched over to twitter, telling himself he was going to check some fan mentions. Maybe, if a certain someone had tweeted back at him, he’d see that too. But that would just be a happy byproduct.

Entering into his mentions, Shawn was instantly flooded with love, like always. So many of his fans tweeting him extremely meaningful messages, a few asking questions on how the tour rehearsals were coming, others tagging him in their amazing artwork. His fans constantly surprised them, in every avenue. They were so talented, some were incredible artist, others writers, singers or instrumentalist. He was lucky to have the fanbase he did.

Andrew came into the studio, phone in hand, just as Shawn was typing out a response to a particularly sweet tweet.

“Who’s this Karli King girl?” Andrew asked, not looking up from his phone.

Shawn felt his spine straighten, “Just a Youtuber?”

“You like her?” Andrew asked, typing something onto his phone like he’d die if he didn’t get it done right now.

“Well, I mean she’s crazy talented.”

Geoff groaned, “Yeah man, the whole world’s heard about it at this point.”

Shawn punched Geoff on the arm for being a fucking dick, before looking back to Andrew. “Why do you ask?”

“That tweet you made?” Andrew finally looked up, “Did you mean it?”

Shawn scratched at his neck, “I mean, yeah it was really cool that she did a video of my songs…”

“No, I mean,” Andrew cleared his throats, “You wanna get back on Youtube?”

Shawn’s eyebrows lifted, “I mean, I hadn’t really particularly thought about it. It was just a little quip.”

Andrew hummed. “Let me know if she reaches out to you.” Then he turned on his heel and walked out the door.

Odd.

So, Allie may have convinced Karli to reach out. And Karli absolutely was not waiting for her phone to ding with a possibility of something so completely insane that Karli couldn’t even quite fathom it.

It was a Friday night, for god's sake. It was Friday name, she’d had a long week of writing and recording her newest video. And she’d had a massively successful week with Shawn’s video reaching over 10 million views. She’d only ever reached that many views on other time, and it was on her very first every ten songs in ten minutes video.

But the point is, it’s Friday night, after a long, successful week, and she’s sitting at home waiting by her phone like a love sick puppy. She hates it, but she’s also not going to change it.

She’s going to sit back, listen to a bomb ass playlist while she soaks in her bubble bath, like the mother fucking queen that Karli King is. Self care, that’s what Fridays were about in this house.

“Why would you want me to go back to Youtube?”

“Not back, like for good obviously,” Andrew rolled his eyes at Shawn’s dramatics.

Andrew had asked Shawn to come into the office on one of his few days off. That always had Shawn on edge, when Andrew asked for unscheduled meetings.

“Just, a collab with her. It could be beneficial in a lot of different ways.”

“How?” Shawn asked, leaning back in the chair across from Andrew. “How could going back to a smaller platform possibly be beneficial?” Shawn knew he was kind of being a brat, and he wasn’t even entirely sure why it was happening. But there was just something about the idea of asking Karli King for that collab, the one Shawn was certain she was kidding about anyway, that freaked him the hell out.

“Well for starters, not that your fan base is decreasing or anything, but you’ve lost a lot of your original fans. The fans that found you on Youtube,” Andrew reminded Shawn, as if he’d stupidly forgotten. “A collaboration with an up and coming Youtuber could bring some of those fans back in, which is good for you.” Andrew picked up his phone, to check on something, before looking back to Shawn. “Secondly, you’re always saying how you want to be seen with other women occasionally. This would do that, but in a way that isn’t inherently romantic. It would separate you from the likes of Camilla, since I know those rumors are getting old.” Andrew paused again, “So, that, again would be beneficial for you.” Andrew stood, hovering over Shawn. “I don’t see the issue anyway, you like the girl’s videos and you’re talented. It shouldn’t be a problem. All I’m asking you to do is send you a DM on Twitter or something. Just reach out. See what she’s thinking. If nothing comes of it, fine. But I want you to try.”

“Fine.” Shawn stood up, suddenly wanting to go back okay. “I’ll try.”

“Thank you.” Andrew nodded. “Oh, are you flying back to LA for that golf thing Niall invited you to? I need to get a plane ticket if you are.”

“I told you he’d fucking collab with you!” Allie screamed as she saw the notification pop up on Karli’s phone.

“Maybe…” Karli said, getting a little giggly, “You really think he’s going to collab with me, Allie?”

Allie squeaked, “I think he just might!”

“Fuck, Shawn Mendes, Allie...this could change everything.”

i finally got to see the national live!!

so after 6 years of falling in love with the national, i finally got to see them live yesterday!! this is gonna be super long lmao

since the national never come to my home country during tour, when they announced their tour i booked the tickets without even knowing whether i was returning to manchester or even the uk. so when i got my offer to return i was relieved af lmao. a once in a lifetime opportunity was worth the risk and anxious waiting LOL

anyway

seeing them live was like a whole new world for me. when bryce came out to perform with the opening act (who were very good!) i was so overwhelmed. this guy, part of the band i love so much, was right in front of my face!

(like literally, cause i ran in after getting my merch and managed to snag a place right at the barrier!)

ive watched tonnes of their live performances on video, but nothing prepared me for how great they were. since bryce was right in front of me i ended up paying most attention to him.. but then when hed play the piano aaron took his place and id end up paying attention to aaron... sorry matt, scott and bryan!!!!

of course matt is such a character that hed command your attention some way or another. i did make myself look at scott and bryan at points in time bc i love all of them! i found it super cute how scott and bryan (and at one point bryce) would hold like a shaker instrument and use it when theyre not playing their own instrument. its like theyre always gonna be involved somehow lmao.

at the beginning it felt a little detached compared to the bastille show i went to last year. but i dont blame them or think its bad, cause at bastille’s dan would stand close to the stage while matt prefers to hang about with the band. its just two different performers. it kind of made me think that i was watching the national perform in their own world.. until matt stopped midway through empire line and asked security to help someone.

at that point it kind of hit me that wow, actually we're in the same space! like im not actually watching them in their own world, like im there too! and theyre not in their own space either, theyre watching us too! and of course, how nice of matt to stop because someone wasnt okay 😭 he started all over again once he made sure they were okay. by the end he said "just some problems with dehydration. stay cool!"

and he threw a plastic pint across the theatre and i got some white wine on me. LOL. at another point he threw a red solo cup so hard i think it hit the opposite wall cause there was a super loud sound. then he went on to say "...one day..." during the last song he brought out a bottle of white wine or prosecco on stage but said he said couldn’t open it because it was corked and it was hard to open those on stage with his teeth(!!!) he asked for another bottle and smashed the corked one on the ground. i love drunk matt so much.

bryce is so interesting to watch tbh. he keeps changing guitars lmao. i got so excited every time he brought out the blue one, bc i had a super clear view of his bow hanging from his mic stand and i was like "vanderlyle?????"

in the end they didnt play it, but no matter! they played so many good songs that i cant complain. my jaw hit the floor when they played hard to find cause i wasnt expecting that at all! i kept saying "oh my god" when i heard the chords lmao. it was so beautiful. i remembered the interview where one of the twins said they think hard to find is one of the most beautiful songs theyve ever written. i felt so honoured that i could listen to it live! they also played this is the last time - my favourite off twfm! i think a lot of people in the theatre love that song too! we were all shouting “it takes a lot of pain to pick me up” together.

of course they played standard classics too. it felt so good to sing along to bloodbuzz and i need my girl. i kind of expected they were gonna play england since it was their first show in england for this tour so when aaron started playing the chords i was super happy. mr november was the best in terms of crowd involvement, you could hear everyone shouting I WONT FUCK US OVER together. conversation 16, too.. everyone screaming "CAUSE IIIIMM EEEVILLLL" was so much fun. slow show and apartment story were so great live as well. singing “SO WORRY NOT ALL THINGS ARE WELL” was so wonderful. during fake empire the twins did the guitar thing as they always do. i was so happy!

tbh when i was there i mostly felt out of place since most of the people there were white hipsters and they came with their friends/partners so i barely talked to anyone, but singing all the classics live made me forget all of that awkwardness.

the new album was good live too. carin at the liquor store is my fave off the album and it sounded so beautiful live. matt went one octave higher during turtleneck and he sounded so clear. i was actually so surprised at how clear and almost rasp-free he sounded! we shouted “great uncle valentine jester” during day i die, it was so great! they dedicated apartment story and born to beg to a lady who took care of them while they were in manchester. the opening act luluc came out and sang with them during born to beg. it was beautiful and perfect! ive been falling in love more and more with born to beg with each listen, and the live performance really sealed the deal with how much i love it.

terrible love was the last song off the setlist and it’s my first favourite song from the national so listening to it live was like coming full circle of some sort. during that song (and mr. november) matt went out and leaned over the barriers so that people could reach out and hug him. during terrible love he was super close to me, but i was too scared to touch him cause so many people were clinging onto him already but he was literally right there! he also stood at the edge pretending to fall from the other side. a member of the audience hugged his knees to stop him from falling!

bryce kind of smiled at my general direction at one point when he was setting up his guitar. the girl next to me blew kisses at him, i wish i did or said something too, but honestly i just stood there and melted into a puddle. during fake empire bryce went to play the piano so aaron was on my side of the stage and he waved at my general direction when they finished. a double whammy! matt came over to our side of the stage during turtleneck and screamed the chorus at us. it was so surreal. waiting for two hours outside in the cold and rain was definitely worth the place right in the front.

of course i have a soft spot for the twins, so seeing them live was the best part of my night. bryce (and at some points aaron) being in front of me was a dream come true. it’s no doubt that bryce is fantastic at guitar, but hearing him live and actually picking up the way he plays with my own ears was really something else. not only his playing, but also how he was using all the different guitars and using the mics on them and all the different pedals - it was all like a work of genius. i didn’t really get to see aaron’s artistry since his stuff was on the opposite side of the stage and he played more piano (which was on his side of the stage) but i could clearly see him playing when matt stepped back and let the twins perform guitar together. i caught him smirking at bryce on multiple occasions. i ascended each time.

it was obvious that bryce was the more shimmery, flashy player when it came to guitar, so i tried to distinguish their styles of piano too! maybe it’s just me, but i think aaron has a deeper sound and bryce has a sharper sound! maybe that’s why they take turns for specific songs. regardless, they were so great, playing together and separately. i admire them greatly since they have so many projects and interests and even though their musical interests differ, they end up intertwining. seeing them live really showed that tbh!

it was the best night of my life. i wish i could be going to today’s show as well, but unfortunately i don’t have the money for that! anyway, everything ive always dreamed of already came true when i managed to stand right in the front and watch the national in all their glory perform live. i never expected to be right in the front - literally at the barrier - but i was! and it was worth the two hour wait in the cold without any food (this was my fault for forgetting to eat before coming, but it was worth it tbh!). hopefully i’ll be able to go for another concert if possible because that was probably the best experience ive ever had.
