White-breasted Nuthatches forage up, down, and sideways over tree trunks and around large branches. They probe into bark crevices or chip away at wood to find food, often storing seeds and insects one at a time under loose bark on their territory. You can find them at woodland edges and in open areas with large trees, such as parks, wooded suburbs, and yards. White-breasted Nuthatches are monogamous birds that live in pairs year round chasing other nuthatches from their territory. Carp are omnivorous but feed primarily on plants. Adult carp feed on a variety of organisms including aquatic plants and seeds, insects, crustaceans, mollusks and fish eggs. Carp feed by sucking up mud from the bottom, spitting it back out and feeding on particles while they are suspended. Their method of feeding has been known to decrease water quality. As a bottom-feeder, the carp roots along the floor of a body of water, sucking in mud and other matter off the bottom and spitting it back out again. The tree swallow is about five inches long. It has a forked tail, like the letter V. It has a blue head, back and wings and white feathers on its underside. Like in many bird species, the females are not as brightly colored as the males. Tree Swallows pair up to breed but often mate secretly outside the pair. Occasionally a male attends two mates in separate nest sites. American Oil Beetles are a type of Blister beetle. When threatened or squeezed under pressure, they emit a chemical called cantharidin that creates blisters and irritates human skin. These wounds will heal, but they are painful. This chemical defense can ward off predators and give the beetle time to escape. 🪲 These are a large beetle species that have an iridescent shiny black body that is massive in relation to its head and thorax. They have 2 antennae that point up like an upside-down L shape. They are also identified by their long spindly legs attached to their thorax that carry their oversized body. Although oil beetles have wings, they are generally flightless insects and prefer to slowly move around looking for plant material to feed on. 🪲 They are active all year, but more so in the spring, when they are more likely to be seen. The larvae are somewhat devious. One will sit on flowers, waiting for a bee to land. It will latch onto the bee for a free ride back to the hive. Once there, the beetle larva feeds on the same food as the bee larvae. Painted turtles are one of the most common turtles in North America and are found from southern Canada to northern Mexico. These turtles will come out of the water to spend time basking in the sun. ☀️The sun exposure helps rid them of parasites. Creatures like raccoons, otters, mink, foxes, and other medium-sized animals will prey on turtles and their eggs.
