OC Inspirations: Devinahl & Indy

I was (delightfully) tagged by @vespertine-legacy a while ago and I’ve hesitated to do this because I knew I was going to talk WAY too much - but it was weighing on me, so I decided to open up about the sources from which I stole, that is, drew inspiration for Devinahl and Indirae.

What three fictional characters is your OC a combination of?

This doesn’t apply to every OC - not even mine - but its certainly true for a few : Many of our characters are, to an extent, inspired by characters we see in movies, books, games, TV shows, etc.

Does this apply to any of your OCs? Was it a conscious decision on your part or not? Is your OC a combination of three (or more) fictional characters?

If so - post some GIFs / pics and tell us about them! What does your OC draw from other characters?

DEVINAHL

The truth is that when I came to creating my Imperial Agent Devinahl, and in particular fleshing out her backstory in far, far too much detail, there were some sources that I went to extremely explicitly and deliberately. And chief among them was ...

1. Garak, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

That’s right. Garak from Deep Space Nine. Plain, simple Garak. Outcast. Exile. Spy. Addict. Perennial liar. Patriot. Terrorist. Would-be genocider. Very good tailor.

(If you haven’t seen DS9, then you need to. It’s like Star Trek, but if it was actually good? And Garak is a big part of what elevates it.)

Is it weird to compare my ancient video game Barbie/gorgeous sex bomb badass assassin and seductress to a cold-blooded space lizard who spends his days hemming pants? Possibly. But there are aspects of Garak’s character that, consciously and unconsciously, I made parts of Devinahl’s DNA.

Firstly, Garak is a patriot. He loves Cardassia so much that despite seeing its flaws with absolute clarity, despite having been exiled and reviled by it, he would die without question to serve it (of course, he’d much rather make someone else die). And while seeing that as a weakness, despite knowing that the Cardassia he has committed to serving is disappearing before his eyes, there is still a part of him that believes that that commitment - that neverending sacrifice - is noble. The only noble part of him. That’s central to Devinahl’s character (which is, in turn, the way I made sense of the IA storyline). That while hating and despising the Sith, she would nevertheless believe in the Empire - not so much believe that it is good (at best, I think she sees it as order and stability where the Republic is corruption and chaos) as believe that her commitment to it is the only redeeming thing available to her.

Secondly, the way that Garak will take his needs, vulnerabilities, sincere emotions and package them in ways which gets him what he has to have to keep going, without ever giving up full control? Particularly in the extraordinary episode The Wire, in which a dying Garak tells Dr Bashir a series of lies about himself in order to elicit Bashir’s forgiveness, because he needs to be sincerely forgiven but without ever telling the truth?

Out of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren’t? My dear doctor, they’re all true. Even the lies?

That is everything I tried to do with Dev, particularly in my fic about her and SCORPIO, particularly when it comes to her and Arcann. To know what she needs, as Garak needs absolution from Bashir, and tell just enough truth - put herself into just vulnerable enough a position - to get it, but never without reserving something, holding something back, whether it’s the knowledge that she can maneouvre herself out of SCORPIO’s clutches at any time or her real name? That’s a fucking survivor.

Thirdly, the relationship between Devinahl and Sifter (the spymaster who finds her as a traumatised child and grooms her for Intelligence) and specifically, the deathbed scene I wrote in Riddle was directly inspired by Garak’s relationship with Enabran Tain and that death scene.

Yes, Devinahl was not Sifter’s actual daughter, but in every real sense she was formed by Sifter - and had Sifter had just one day with Dev like Tain had with Garak, Dev would have been lost. She would have turned herself into a carbon copy of Sifter, and she would have died. But the bittersweetness? The acknowledgement that the parental figure you love will never, not even now that they’re dying, love you as you want them to?

‘I should have killed your mother before you were born. You have always been a weakness I can't afford.’ ‘So you've told me. Many times. ...’ ‘Elim, remember that day…in the country. You must've been almost five.’ ‘How can I forget it? It was the only day.’

(The love and infinite sadness with which Andrew Robinson says that line, ‘It was the only day’? I’m crying just thinking about it. Anyway, it was everything I was thinking about and wanted to achieve in that scene.)

Oh ... and Devinahl’s ambiguous relationship with her implants? Well, Garak also has an implant in his head. And that’s all I’m saying about that.

2. Oryx from Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood

A novel character rather than from TV or movies, I hope that’s OK. And I know that there are ... very problematic elements to the way Atwood writes about Oryx, her family, her culture, her background. But she was one of the strongest elements that went into creating Devinahl and her backstory.

There were specific aspects of the story Oryx tells to Jimmie - particularly the parts about being told to scream and make a fuss if a man tries to take you away to a hotel room, and then being told not to make a fuss when a man tries to take you away to a hotel room - that became part of Dev’s story. But there was also a general attitude and way of looking at life I wanted to capture and incorporate. Oryx’s philosophy of value?

Of course (said Oryx), having a money value was no substitute for love. Every child should have love, every person should have it. . . . but love was undependable, it came and then it went, so it was good to have a money value, because then at least those who wanted to make a profit from you would make sure you were fed enough and not damaged too much. Also there were many who had neither love nor a money value, and having one of these things was better than having nothing.

I wanted to create a character who could look at life and suffering and abuse, even her own, and view it in that dispassionate way which horrifies someone from my middle-class Western background - and then I wanted to test that idea, to bring it up against SCORPIO and have SCORPIO try to break it down with torture, to see if it was just a cool facade/necessary illusion. I wimped out of really testing that belief, instead having Dev always know that she could get out of her situation/having her find a way to be loved without truly having to sacrifice her protective patterns ... but if I was a little braver and better, I’d have tested it to breaking point. How far can a character go who thinks like that while still remaining, on some level, compassionate/human/likeable?

3. Saffron (Firefly)

I could have gone Black Widow (definitely the inspiration for Dev’s aesthetic in terms of outfit etc). But the plain truth is that I thought more about Saffron while dreaming up Devinahl/writing her backstory than I did about Black Widow (yes, Widow turned her weakness into strength in a manipulative fashion all the time, but Garak did it better, and other than that she mainly looked after boys in a way that I did not want Dev to be limited to).

Firefly, for a show that had - what - 13 episodes? - exercises far too much of a hold on my imagination and Saffron, especially in the first episode in which she appeared, was such a tremendous character. The way that she found exactly the triggers to turn each member of the crew inside out? (And if she’d had more time, it absolutely would have worked on Wash and Inara, too - it only didn’t because she had to hurry.) Dev has that. I can’t write it, because I suck, but she has it.

Oh, and nobody will ever know Devinahl’s real name (apart from you, if you read my fic about her backstory) and she’d die before letting you know it. That’s straight from Saffron. As is, I suppose, the man who would accept her just as she is without needing to push to know her secrets, except it worked out a little better for Dev and Arcann than it did for Yolanda and Durran Haymer because Dev and Arcann will always have pegging.

INDIRAE

(This will be a lot shorter than the section on Devinahl, I promise.)

1. Steve Rogers, Captain America (and whatever else)

I have never been super into the MCU, but the key reference I used to find a way into Indy’s character, back when she was nothing more than a cool-looking Cathar Bounty Hunter, was Steve Rogers. (November can attest to this)

Indy’s physical size - she’s six foot if she’s an inch, and big - is key to her personality, but equally key is the idea that she would always experience that size as uncomfortable and slightly alien to her. Like Steve Rogers, she started out as the scrawny kid always getting beat up by everybody ... And when she got her strength (with a hefty assist from the toxic waste run-off into what was her family’s only source of water) and suddenly got TALL and STRONG? She did not like bullies - which was what led her to help Coda out of a jam at the spacesport and started them on their road.

(If there’s a better way to play the BH storyline than as a stone-cold mercenary with an utterly unwilling heart of gold ... then I don’t know about it.)

2. Xena, Xena Warrior Princess

I’ll be completely fucking straight with anybody about this (so to speak): I love Xena, I had an obsession with it as a teenager I’m still unpacking, and the show tends to feed into my characters in an ... odd way.

Indy is physically imposing like Xena, is the main thing; and her dynamic with Coda owes a lot to Xena’s with Gabrielle (although Coda is as big and tough as Indy, she is the fast talker/smooth operator to Indy’s laconic strongman). I wanted Indy to dominate action scenes the way that Xena does, be that kind of a force of nature; and watch her struggle to find ways to channel that charisma, to need Coda’s help to understand how to do it.

3. Dottie Henson, A League of Their Own

OK, first of all, I do not want to hear any kind of mockery. This is, unironically, one of my favourite films of all time.

Again, we come back to the core theme of a character struggling with her own greatness/potential. That’s what is the most fascinating through-line of A League of Their Own: Dottie, this unbelievable baseball player/physical presence (yes, she’s very tall, just like Indy) who is so terrified to admit that she wants anything more than her smalltown life and dreadful husband, even while the evidence of her talent and passion for the game is burning up these ... fields? Diamonds? I don’t know baseball apart from this film.

Indy certainly hides behind not wanting to be a bounty hunter. She doesn’t believe in any Mandalorian nonsense about romanticising what is an unglamorous job. She’s just doing it for credits and afterwards, once she’s secured her family’s future, she’s totally going to go home and settle down in some acceptable, domestic way. Being on the Mantis with Coda, it’s absolutely just a means to an end. She doesn’t want to be there, she doesn’t care about it, it’s not who she is, she doesn’t need it. This life, the adventure, the freedom, the fighting for survival, it’s certainly not what gets inside her and what lights her up, no, not at all.

Oh, and Dottie is also a reluctant leader. She doesn’t see why her talent should put her in the position of telling other people what to do - but then, on the other hand, she sees so clearly what they need to be doing, and when she says to do it, they listen. She doesn’t want to carry this team, but they’re only a team so long as she carries them.

(Don’t worry, Coda’s not going to let her lie to herself for too long.)

Booking a kofi Kingston world title win because he fucking deserves it ok

So tomorrow with his iron man performance stillin mind kofi begins the chamber match first now he doesn’t have to replicate his Tuesday night performance but he does have to survive, maybe he gets a sneak pin on Aj or randy Orton but the point is he’s in the chamber he’s doing good and he’s surviving. It comes down to him and Daniel Bryan and Rowan distracts him from outside the chamber he gets struck with a knee and pinned. Now the new day would give a big backstage promo saying how proud they are of kofi and how close he came.

Kofi says he’s gonna dwell on it but ultimately get back to winning matches and hopefully get the opportunity once again. With that being said the new day emerges as challengers for the miz and Shane’s tag titles. In the build Shane and miz take shots at kofi saying that miz is more accomplished and he seized those moments that kofi never could, obviously Big E and Xavier take offense to this and defend their friend and they say they’ll take their titles and like kofi will one day take his WWE championship. And at fast lane kofi watches from the outside as Big E and Xavier woods do just that and the new day become tag champs once again. With a rematch set for smackdown the miz convinces them to have kofi enter the match. The new day still retains which drives the wedge between Shane and miz for mania.

Now for mania the new days opponent would be their age old friends the Usos. Now jimmy and jey remind the new day of their past battles and say no one has their respect like the new day does and they said backstage at elimination chamber they couldn’t help but cheer for kofi and when it didn’t happen it brought them back to earth, kofi Kingston and the new day will always go down in history for what could’ve been. They could’ve been the best stable if not for the shield, could’ve been the best tag team if not for the Uso’s and kofi could’ve been world champion. So at wrestlemania the new day battles the Usos and win and backstage they give an interview and kofi says “im so proud of these two guys right here that’s why imma do my best to make them as proud of me”

The next smackdown live is billed as “Kofi’s got something to say” and the new day comes to the ring and gives kofi the mic and he says how he loves the new day and the past few years have been the best for his career but then he says that that night at elimation chamber is still eating away at him and that he’s proud of their tag titles but he wants something more. And he calls out Daniel Bryan and says “we got beef Daniel, we got beef” and he reminds him of how he retained his title that night and how his whole career has been just like that he’s had opportunity after opportunity taken from him and he challenges Bryan to a match at the next PPV, and shockingly Bryan declines

He says “kofi I have the utmost respect for you as a competitor you’re here Day in and day out and you work so hard just like I used to and you’ve been doing that for 11 years but you haven’t tasted the success I have you’re no where near the level that I am, your not a winner kofi, you’re just second best and you don’t belong with this brass ring” and he walks out.

The next week there’s a fatal four way between the miz randy Orton Samoa Joe and shinsuke nakamura to see who is the new number one contender and just when it seems there’s gonna be a winner all three new day members rush the ring and destroy all four competitors and leave them all unconscious and rendering the main event cancelled and kofi takes the mic and says “I wasn’t asking you Daniel I was telling you”

The next week Shane McMahon announces that kofi Kingston is suspended until after the next pay per view and that the new day will have to defend their tag titles against Daniel Bryan and Erick Rowan. During that night Bryan and Erick are closing in on a win when kofi pops up on the titantron dancing and throwing pancakes he distracts Erick Rowan and big E rolls him up to retain their titles.

The next night a furious Daniel Bryan announces that kofi nor will any member of the new day get a shot at his world title as long as he is champion. Kofi comes down and says “well I guess I’m just have to take that down to the bank, money in the bank that is, because when I win I’m coming for that title” Daniel Bryan reminds him that he has to win the match first something that he has never been able to do, he’s watched countless times as other people’s careers were made and he stayed in the same place. The two get into a brawl and are forced apart. A match is announced between kofi Kingston and rusev the winner would then qualify for the money in the bank match. Kofi wins the match as commentary plays up the opportunities that kofi never seems to be able to cash in on. The qualifying members for the money in the bank are mustafa Ali, kofi Kingston, Samoa Joe, Elias, Finn balor, and Bobby lashley.

The night of the money in the bank kofi asks his new day brethren to not interfere for him unless the other guys wanted to play dirty, he wants to do this on his own. The new day supports him and give him their word. The question of the night is can kofi Kingston finally win the money in the bank contract, they play a montage of his past losses and show the eventual winners and their championships. Then just as kofi is about to grab the briefcase lio rush pushes him off, the new day immediately runs out and chases him off and knocks anybody out in the ring, they pick kofi up and watch him climb the ladder to win the match. Kofi Kingston has just won the money in the bank ladder match.

As kofi celebrates his win on Tuesday Daniel Bryan calls him down to congratulate him on a fluke victory and he says that if he does become champion it’ll be a tainted title run, he had to take the easiest route possible, Daniel says he knows that all too well he’d cashed in years before but look at him now. And kofi says “Daniel if you think I spent 11 years working my ass off to cop out you’re mistaking he said he’s cashing in his money in the bank in the main event of summer slam in two months time, and he says keep that title warm for me cause Its finally gonna be kofis time to shine. Meanwhile Daniel Bryan defends his title against mustafa Ali at the July pay per view while kofi Kingston faces Erick Rowan with the stipulation that if kofi is pinned or taps out he will lose his money in the bank briefcase and that Erick Rowan will be allowed to cash it in for any title he wants.

At the PPV kofi and Erick Rowan wrestle for 30 minutes and kofi manages to squeak out the win, while Daniel Bryan beats mustafa Ali later in the night and then the match is set Kingston Vs Bryan at summerslam. The build sees Bryan Kingston down at every point while the new day constantly sees this as kofi’s coronation of sorts. On the go home episode of smackdown Daniel Bryan starts to list off names like CM punk, jack swagger, sheamus all people that debuted around the same time as kofi and he tasted world title gold and he says that come Sunday that list will be a bitter reminder of why kofi will always be a mid card performer, he’s not fit to run with the likes of Daniel Bryan or aj styles or Samoa Joe and kofi comes out and says “listen here Daniel you’ve been ducking me since the elimination chamber when I should’ve had that belt their around my waste this Sunday all bets are off he’s taking that title and then he’s gonna go backstage and enjoy a big bowl of booty O’s with his brothers.

And then on Sunday kofi and Bryan are wrestling in the main event and Bryan has kofi Locked into the yes lock and kofi raises his hands to tap but then summons the strength to roll Bryan onto his shoulders gets up and nails him with trouble in paradise for the pinfall

NFL Panic Index 2017, Week 10: The Eagles are right on track to lose the Super Bowl

Will the third time be the charm for an Eagles Super Bowl?

The Philadelphia Eagles are feeling it right now. At 8-1, they’re at least two games better than every other team in the NFL. They’ve won seven games in a row. They just pounded the Broncos, lighting up a once-proud defense for 51 points. They look unstoppable.

The Eagles are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the playoffs at this point. Since 1990, every team that has started 8-1 has made it to the postseason.

But they’re setting their sights higher than just than breaking a three-year playoff drought:

For Eagles fans, this is where the BUT comes in. Yes, both of their trips to the Super Bowl came in seasons when they started 8-1. BUT the Eagles also lost both Super Bowls and haven’t won a championship since 1960. That’s longer than the Browns!

Eagles fans, go watch for this a minute. This next paragraph isn’t for your eyes.

Eagles haters, hey how’s it going? So, I’ve got some bad news. If you thought drunk Eagles fans were hard to take, think about how “drunk with the power of a Super Bowl” Eagles fans would be. Like, you know your mom’s friend Cathy, who never stops bragging about her perrrrrfect daughter? Now imagine Cathy as a guard in the Stanford prison experiment. That’s Eagles fans if they are even on the verge of a Super Bowl appearance. If you even know a friend of a friend whose cousin is an Eagles fan, you may as well fake your death to avoid them for those two weeks between the NFC Championship and Super Bowl LII, because they will be that unbearable.

OK Eagles fans, you can come back now.

So, is this a trend, or will third time be the charm for the Eagles’ dreams of finally winning a Super Bowl?

Panic index: No team is punching its ticket to the NFL’s biggest game in November. Around the same time last year, we were wondering the same thing about a one-loss Cowboys team. They didn’t get a chance to lose the Super Bowl because they didn’t win a single playoff game. Just let the season play out first.

The 49ers’ playoff hopes could be over historically early

I mean, this one is obvious, right? But they could actually be eliminated in Week 10! It would make them the first team eliminated with seven weeks to go in 50 years.

The 49ers made a splash in trading for Jimmy Garoppolo, but Kyle Shanahan doesn’t seem to be in a rush to get him in there. When you see that the team is essentially eliminated from playoff contention already, it’s hard to blame him.

They’ll take their No. 1 or No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, prepare Garoppolo for next season, and keep things moving. Anything else would be a waste.

Panic index: Whether or not this happens this week, the 49ers can put the nails in the coffin on the 2017 season. It’s not the worst thing in the world, if you’re a fan.

Julio, are you OK man?

Julio Jones had the drop of all drops this past Sunday against the Panthers.

With the Falcons down 10, Jones dropped a dime from Matt Ryan, with nobody around Jones. It seemed like a sure thing as the ball was in the air, and he made his way to the 15-, 10-, and 5-yard lines. But it wasn’t.

Luke Kuechly thinks that a hex on Jones caused the drop.

“I think the fans had a little impact on that. They put some juju on him or something,” Kuechly said jokingly, via NFL.com. “He's a great player, and that doesn't happen a lot. So maybe the fans put a hex on him, cast a spell.”

It was a rarity for Jones:

Bill Belichick must not be watching the 2017 Broncos

The Patriots will visit the Broncos this week, and Bill Belichick is preparing his defense for this high-powered, dynamic Denver offense. Wait, what?

“Explosive” is not a word we would use to describe this offense.

Let’s loosely define an explosive play as a gain of at least 12 yards on a run and 16 yards on a pass. We wouldn’t look at the Broncos’ per-play average of 4.9 yards and think, man, that’s one explosive offense. But then again, we’re not Bill Belichick.

The Broncos do have offensive talent capable of burning defenses with big plays, particularly Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. But they’ve got Brock Osweiler throwing them the ball right now. He’s averaging 5.4 yards per completion this season, and averages just 6 yards per catch over his career.

Panic index: Maybe Belichick is just being polite, though that’s not typically a huge priority for him. Or more likely, he doesn’t want his defense — which struggled mightily against the pass early in the season — to overlook even the Broncos offense. Any given Sunday, and all that.

Though, to be fair, “explosive” is also an adjective often paired with diarrhea, so ...

It’ll be almost impossible for the Buccaneers to get on track

It’s Week 10, and the Buccaneers are 2-6. Mike Evans sees the writing on the wall.

Tampa Bay was crowned an offseason winner after adding DeSean Jackson and O.J. Howard. And fans fell in love with Gerald McCoy and Chris Godwin on Hard Knocks. This team was expected to contend for the NFC South and maybe even have a shot at a Super Bowl. That does not appear to be in the cards.

So what happened? Despite all that talent, the offense is averaging just 19.8 points per game. It’s partly because the defense can’t get off the field. They’re ranked 29th in the league after allowing opponents to convert 55 third downs this season. They can’t get any pressure on quarterbacks, and they’re ranked dead last in the league with just eight sacks on the season.

And there’s not much reason to hope the Bucs can turn it around, at least not this week. The team is sidelining Jameis Winston for at least two weeks until the sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder fully heals. And Evans will be out this week serving a suspension for blindsiding Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore after he had a sideline altercation with Winston during the Bucs’ loss to the Saints on Sunday.

This isn’t the first time Evans has lamented the state of the Buccaneers. He said essentially the same thing after the team fell to 2-5 with a 17-3 loss to the Panthers.

“I wish I knew why we weren’t starting fast and finishing fast,” Evans said via Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. “I don’t know what it is. Like I said before the season, on paper we are an amazing team, but we’re just not as good as we thought we were, so we’ve just got to pick it up. The good thing about it [is] we have nine games left.”

Panic index: Now the Bucs just have eight games left, and Evans will miss one of them. Winston will miss even more. And this is looking like a lost season for Tampa Bay.

Ben McAdoo might not have much time to save his job

McAdoo denied claims his team had quit in Week 9’s 51-17 home loss to the Rams, but ... c’mon. New York played disinterested defense as Los Angeles rolled all over them, playing with all the intensity of a smoking break in the second half.

After the game, he told the press no one’s position was safe from the shakeup that would mark the Giants’ second half, even Eli Manning. The only problem is there’s not enough talent on the NY roster to gain anything from benchings. The offense has been ravaged by injuries, and Orleans Darkwa has risen to the top of the team’s finest new tradition; a rotation of utterly frustrating and underwhelming tailbacks.

Things are even more grim on the defensive side, where a once-fearsome pass rush is now just Jason Pierre-Paul and a bunch of cardboard cutouts. New York’s inability to rush the passer has weakened what should be an upper-tier secondary. The Giants are allowing opposing QBs to post a 101.0 passer rating this fall; that figure was just 78.7 — second in the league — in 2016.

The wheels have fallen off, and even if McAdoo wants to take a drastic step in a Hail Mary attempt to fix things, his options look grim. Behind an ineffective Manning lies Geno Smith — a quarterback who couldn’t win a starting role with the dumpster-fire Jets — and rookie Davis Webb, who has yet to be activated for an NFL game in his pro career.

How To Get Into The Crowd

You need a ladder for this to work.First, you need to break the announce table that does NOT have the ring bell by it. Then, you need to clear the other announce table, in the empty space from where the broken announce table was, lean the ladder on the announce table and run up it. You will be on the announce table, then you need to do a running strike into the top right corner (i perfer a big boot) then you should be in the crowd.

Time Machine Play Road To WrestleMania with Christian. Talk to Edge in the south locker room at the Elimination Chamber PPV about the Time Machine. Look for the Edge and Christian action figures. They are between the bookshelf and the TV. Once you leave, you will get a phone call from Edge. The “Flux Capacitor” (Back To The Future reference) is in the Green Room. The “Phone Booth” (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure reference) is in the parking lot. Go to Edge with all three parts to get the Time Machine, which allows any Superstar to travel to any point in time on the Road To WrestleMania.
