Tag game! Tag nine people you would like to know better
I was tagged by @jaz--hands 💕
Last song: come over by Noah Kahan. I've been listening to the album stick season, most of which I really like. His other stuff is fine but not anything of note from what I've heard of it tho aksjsksks.
Favourite colour: don't really have favourites but I love a good green, the colours of moss and plants and being in lush nature :)
Currently watching: one piece, slowly making my way through! I'm nearly finished dressrosa now. I'm also clinging to my seat every Thursday for the new dunmeshi ep; I read it in the summer and am ecstatic to be able to watch it when it comes out. I like to watch it in the evening after the day is done sprawled out on the couch with a cup (or two if I top it up) of sake and an umeboshi or two to nibble on. Very relaxing.
Sweet/savory/spicy: all three! I love things that are all three. I have a decent spiciness tolerance but not super high. If it really came to a draw, I generally prefer savory, as sweet things can be too sweet for me.
Relationship status: goin' steady with all my wonderful hobbies. Being on the ace and aro spectrum I have basically zero interest in pursuing anything with anyone.
Current obsession: tragically right now I'm a bit in the ass crack of the couch cushions for obsessions; Trigun and vashwood had me going for a good part for the last year. I've picked up one piece and dunmeshi which fills some of the void but I'm not properly raving mad about it or any of the character dynamics (excited for sure and at time it's gotten close, but not chew through my leg bonkers, which usually requires tragic characters and relationships). So I've been hopping from characters and ships within one piece and revisiting old fandoms in search of that spark/addictive high, which I'm not really getting to my horror.
Non-fandom related I'm currently into carnivorous plants and a plant place near me stocks them, so I've got a bunch which I tend to both anxiously and with pride (sundews seem to hate me, nepenthes on the other hand...). I also was briefly obsessed (it's mellowed a bit now) with tankscaping those asian 'goldfish' pots, of which I now have two, but only one up and running (the second I've been too busy), but hopefully with the semester ending I can get the second up.
Last thing you googled: mmmm I think dispel magic dnd 5e, since I was just at a friend's playing dnd. My character accidentally caused a crack in reality and was trying to fix it, and I was supposed to give a description of what the spell looks like (spoiler alert: its not actually given a description for what it looks like)
To tag: anyone who sees this and wants to do it! And: @hellebore-petall @mothghhost @origami10 @crowlore @walluno @forgedobsidian @el-the-cell @eshtaresht @cookies-and-doom @garrandia

What did you think of the latest episode ? I need to hear your thoughts because wtf was that
haha hello anon 👀 as usual i have a jumbled mess of thoughts under the cut:
so like every other week, i have some criticism and some positives too. i mean obviously i didn’t find the episode that ~enjoyable~ lol but there were some good moments. i liked seeing fiona and the kids so happy and smiley and i didn’t totally disagree with JD re: his pov on thony. it almost doesn’t matter if he’s being hypocritical, his concern is the safety and well-being of jaz and if he sees thony as a threat to that, i think he’s justified in wanting to protect her by any means. and it was actually kind of refreshing to hear a different perspective on thony from a character who isn’t like knee-deep involved in her life.
the shipping of it all aside, i think what i’ve come to struggle with the most this season is just how goddamn miserable everyone is lol 😭 this show keeps writing itself into darker and darker corners so that moments of levity almost seem unearned and out of place (i.e. the interview scenes in episode 5), even though more than anything i just want to see my favs get wins. like i think coming out of season 1, i was really hoping that thony would have more agency into her descent into the crime world, but really it’s been more of the same, which is she keeps being forced into situations that she seemingly can’t get out of and is absolutely miserable all the time. to me the writers seem to be stuck on making sure thony is still a relatable ‘good’ character who is just forced into criminal activity by circumstance… which did work well for season 1 since the focus was saving luca by any means. but with this second season there was an opportunity to tell different stories, i.e. stories about thony that don’t involve her carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders; instead it seems the show has just leaned heavier into that. i was hoping we would be able to see a grayer thony this season, more of her purposefully leaning into the criminal activity because it’s convenient or simply because she can (i think this is why i liked ep 4 so much lol). instead, it’s the world around her that keeps getting darker and darker and she’s just being further suffocated. and not to mention, on top of that, arman who was more or less her lifeline in season 1 is now also just as miserable as she is 💀 like it’s infinitely more satisfying to see characters we love do bad things but do them willingly vs them being forced to do bad things and are constantly suffering. it becomes too much after a while!
pacing-wise i do think ep 7 and 8 have been probably the best paced episodes this season? these episodes have at least felt like they’re building towards something and riding some sort of momentum. i guess the payoff this season is taking down kamdar, which is very meh to me. again i don’t think i’m a big fan of introducing a cartoonish villain for the express purpose of making characters suffer so that he becomes a lightning rod/excuse for everything terrible in these peoples’ lives. like even if he does get taken down by the end of the season, it doesn’t strike me as super satisfying because it seems like that’s the only reason he’s here? the issue with making a new character the sole focus of the season is that once he’s out of the way, where does that leave our main characters? if it’s in the exact same place they were pre-kamdar, then i think it’s kind of pointless storytelling haha. but idk lol, we’re still in the thick of it so it’s hard to say right now whether the conclusion will be a good one or not. one last thing on pacing — something i have noticed is that a lot of episodes this season have ended on cliffhangers which i’m personally a little allergic to; imo cliffhangers are effective when deployed sparingly or else they just feel overused and narratively repetitive which is how i’ve often felt about the episodes this season unfortunately.
ok to the armony: i mean obviously the shipper in me was watching ep 8 like 🫣 haha. though i mean honestly i don’t think it was out of character for anyone with how everything spun out — thony has really rarely shown any outward desire for arman (aside from 1x06 which one could argue was a moment of weakness) or any desire to want to see his marriage end on her behalf. and arman not being able to definitively decide between the two sides of his heart only to have thony literally decide for him. it sucked but like it didn’t not make sense i guess? nevertheless, it was still so so frustrating to watch and it’s annoying because it feels like what happened was just narratively manufactured to get people riled up lol. but getting people riled up and talking about it is likely exactly what the writers wanted? we got major baited by arman offering to stay with thony (the potential of seeing them comfort each other and emotionally leaning on one another!) only to have that immediately ripped away by thony basically pushing him back towards nadia. literally no one is happy watching this unfold lmao i’m tired! end this triangle from hell 😩 like it’s not bad storytelling imo, i’m just annoyed! personally i believe that the way to get fans to stop clamoring about a ship and focus on the core story is to stop throwing endless angst at them 🥲 they shouldn’t need to be canonized immediately but continued progression and bits of payoff go a long way. but that’s just me!
i keep harping on about this but my greatest, greatest fear is that this show doesn’t get another season. i really would not mind the slowburning of thony’s descent into the darkness or armony progressing past like 2 seconds of physical contact if there was a guarantee that the show would have the longevity to tell this long slow story. but yknow, my anxiety gets the best of me and i become concerned that we’re wasting precious episodes on more ping ponging and drawn-out suffering for the sake of having conflict instead of making sure that a complete satisfying story is being told with the episodes we do have. it’s neither here or there lol, the show is ultimately the writers’ and they should absolutely write the stories they want to tell. i’m just along for the ride and can only hope for the best lol and pls @ fox renew tcl for season 3 i beg

Idk who Conrad is and at this point I’m just scared to ask...
Conrad is my OC that originated because I read a couple pages of the audition scripts that someone posted on here a couple days ago (I'll try and link the post when I'm home and on my laptop).
I expressed my dislike for concept reggie who picked up Julie's bra in the dream box scene in ep 2(?). He was also the original one who wanted to know what was in Julie's dream box, but instead of taking no for an answer or being cute about, like Luke, he was just like "If you don't tell me, I'll just come back when you're sleeping."
And a bunch of anons agreed that concept reggie was creepy and one suggested we just forget about him.
And then I remembered that, in the original miraculous ladybug anime which never aired, the leading boy, Adrien, was originally called Felix and he was a lil bitch. Fast forward five(?) years, Felix has a cameo episode as Adrien's cousin who is kinda evil and steals his identity for a bit to do bad things.
SO
I thought it would be really funny if we took the same idea and ran with it. Concept Reggie is actually canon Reggie's evil cousin, who looks almost identical to him.
And then I was like 'Okay, well they can't both be called Reggie, that'll get confusing.'
So I was like concept Reggie, Con Reg, Conrad.
Except, I decided that both were going to be called Reginald, after their grandfather and Conrad, who is younger by 56 seconds, had to go by his middle name.
Then, in typical Jaz fashion, I gave him a tragic backstory.
And then people started shipping him with Nick, and then I started shipping him with Nick, too.
And suddenly everybody wanted a redemption arc for the evil cousin and this is where we're at, now.
Idk if that's a good explanation, but if you actually wanna see the origins, I tag every post about him as #conrad reggie
The first are probably still tagged #concept reggie.
But yah.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ZOE ROBINS, NINJA STEEL WHITE RANGER: by pearl, co-moderator of @erniesbrainfreeze
The lovely & talented Zoe Robins, who plays Hayley Foster in Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, was kind enough to agree to an exclusive interview for erniesbrainfreeze with me and we spent almost four hours talking about Hayley’s backstory, the romance between Calvin & Hayley, her favorite moments with the cast, and how she got started with acting!
Below the cut is our conversations, my questions/comments and her answers. And thank you to those in the fandom who gave me amazing questions to ask her!
We hope you enjoy the incredible behind-the-scenes information Zoe has shared with us and don’t forget to watch Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel every Saturday on Nickelodeon at 12/11 central!
Tumblr media
PEARL: So the first question is about Hayley, she seems like a really fun character to play even if she doesn’t always get a lot of focus. What’s something about Hayley’s character that you have in your head or in your personal notes that we might not know from the show itself?
ZOE: Ooo great question! I decided early on that Hayley’s love for animals stems from her experiences of always being surrounded by them from a young age. She was raised on a small ranch with her mom and younger brother after her parent’s divorce. They were almost self-sustainable. Her caring nature comes from her mother who dedicated her life to sustainable living and caring for the planet.
Her empathy and compassion for all things come from the unconditional love and bond she has with her younger brother, who recently came out as gay.
PEARL: Oh, I love that so much! I always thought of Hayley as being a flower child raised by environmentalists so her being raised on a ranch is so cool! And so much love for the idea of her little brother, I wish Power Rangers would explore that some day for real.
Question by Jaz @elizabethdelgados: If there was an episode that you could have solely about Hayley, what would you make it about? How would you incorporate her backstory into a Power Rangers-esque plot?
ZOE: I would love an episode to be just a solely Hayley focus. She hasn’t had that yet - and there’s obviously so much more to her than just being Calvin’s girlfriend and a part of the ranger team.
If anything it would be about her and Kody, or maybe a situation where she goes above and beyond with helping someone and actually makes things worse. I think one of her weaknesses is that she gives too much of herself so learning to put herself first and valuing the process of self love would be fun to explore, and a great lesson for children! And adults as well!
PEARL: That’s so true and it would work great since a lot of the other rangers have had their flaws highlighted in various focus episodes. And we all love Kody so more of him is always good.
In fact, a question by Chipster @kimberlyannharts: Since having an animal as a side character is pretty uncommon for Power Rangers, how did you prepare for working alongside Kody? Did you have to take time to do classes or exercises with him before the show and how did you approach that as an actor?
ZOE: I’ve never owned a dog in my life so initially I was really nervous! We had a few chances to meet and play before we started and really it was just about us being comfortable around each other. The trainers were amazing and were always nearby!
I would have treats in my pocket or in my hand if he (Jax was his real name) needed to come to me in the scene or do something wild like wake me up by licking my face in the forest. We actually had peanut butter and bits of raw meat under my fringe so he would lick my face in that scene. It was nasty and I smelled so bad hahah
PEARL: Wow, that sounds gross but also your dedication is inspiring! I’ve also never owned a dog so I don’t think I could do that. But it came out great in show, I love watching Hayley and Kody together.
Speaking of your fringe, a lot of us were wondering, since Hayley’s hair is a lot more relaxed than your hairstyle at your Power Morphicon reveal 2 years ago, how did you or the stylists come up with that style? I know they made Chrysti [Ane] dye her hair blonde (I guess for hair color diversity?) so did they also ask you to relax your curls? (question by @hunterbradley)
ZOE: It was production’s idea, I would’ve loved to have kept the curls but I guess maintaining the look like the one they chose is much easier! And yes when we were all initially cast, we all looked very similar. Tan/brown skin tones with dark hair, so I think they were worried that kids might not be able to tell us apart lol. I would love to see a ranger with dreads or braids one day.
PEARL: Well, that’s fair, but there’s just so little natural hair representation in kids shows. I think there’s only been one ranger with dreads and one with an afro, both before the current era.*
ZOE: Absolutely! I would’ve been more than happy to rock my natural hair for representation.
PEARL: A question by Tabitha @operationoverdrive: It’s a sad fact that only five black actresses have played power rangers in the past 25 years (and you’re the fifth), however that is the perfect amount for a teamup! Have you had a chance to meet any of these actresses and how has it been to meet previous rangers in general? Did they give you any advice on being a ranger?
ZOE: Yes, I have, and they were beyond lovely. Camille [Hyde] was the first I met and she was so sweet! I met Karan [Ashley] at Comic Con and then Morphicon and Nakia [Burrise] as well. Everyone is just so great and for the most part the advice has been to make the most of every moment. They’ve all welcomed us to the “family” from the moment we were announced which has been so special.
PEARL: That’s so sweet! I love Karan and Nakia so much, they’re always so genuine and wonderful to their fans.
Going a little back to Hayley, she mostly sticks to Calvin and Preston for the majority of the series. Was there any cast member or guest star you wished you would’ve gotten a chance to work with more? (question also by Tabitha)
ZOE: I would’ve loved more scenes directly with Kelson [Henderson]. I couldn’t speak more highly of him. He’s the most professional, talented and down-to-earth person I’ve ever worked with and he’s a wonderful man too. He is so patient and had a great way of calming us most days when we were in the 11th hour of shooting and slowly losing the plot. Haha! I probably learned the most from him - his tenacity and gratefulness for the work grounded me so much.
Chrysti and I had a lot of fun with the Hayley and Sarah episode with their parents! It would’ve been nice to have more female driven episodes!
PEARL: That’s so sweet! Everyone has only high praise for Kelson, he’s such a legend on this show, I’m so glad he ended up being on Ninja Steel.  And we loved that Hayley/Sarah episode! Their cute little handshake/hair flip thing was adorable and their dynamic was so fun and unique.
ZOE: Hahaha we put that in there ourselves! There’s a lot of stuff we added in the hopes that they’d make the edit and surprisingly a good amount of it did!
PEARL: That makes it even cuter! I love all the little things you guys add in the show it helps make the rangers so much brighter as characters.
Speaking of, Nico [Greetham] and Chrysti both recently took to Twitter to talk about how there was originally a love triangle/breakup storyline planned for Calvin/Hayley and Sarah, but that you and Chrysti spoke to Chip [Lynn] and they decided not to do it - a great choice, as we all love Calvin/Hayley. But we were wondering, did that plot ever get to script and what do you think Hayley’s feelings would’ve been on a potential Calvin/Sarah relationship? Would she have eventually moved on as well? Maybe even with one of the other boys on the team, although that would definitely be awkward, but Hayley has had focus eps with Preston and Levi both and those dynamics are really fun and interesting.
ZOE: We were told very early on with the story lines and both Chrysti and I were really confused about where they were going with it and concerned about the message being put out. We arranged a meeting with Chip where he really listened to us and I’m assuming saw how much we cared about the relationships within the whole cast. Women are constantly being pitted against each other in society and we were just not having it in our show.
Ultimately, Hayley would be fine, lol. Of course Calvin is her best friend and she loves him but she has joy and love for many other things in her life too! It would take some time for them to get over a breakup and remain in the same team and deal with the enormous responsibility of saving the world (lol) but those two have a lot of respect for each other so I think they would be able to stay friends.
Also LOL! I’ve seen some comments about the chemistry between Hayley and Levi. There are a lot of eps with Preston and Hayley together too. Honestly I think it’s because I just have so much fun with them both and love them very much as people so that probably translated on screen. I don’t think any of the rangers in our season would switch up partners haha
PEARL: I’m so glad Chip listened because yeah, two girls fighting over a guy is almost never a good storyline and it’s so predictable in media nowadays. Although I personally love romance & drama so I really enjoyed the ep with Calvin getting jealous over Hayley and Preston even though there was nothing between them haha. And that’s so cute how much Calvin and Hayley love each other, I think it really comes across on screen! You have great chemistry with the whole cast of course but you and Nico play off each other so well.
Have you and Nico ever discussed how Calvin and Hayley met and ended up in a relationship? They’ve been dating for two years by season 2 but was it a childhood friends to lovers thing or did they meet in high school, what do you think the start of their romance was like?
ZOE: For drama, yeah, I can see why they thought that could work but it’s just so contrasting to the tone of our show it just didn’t make sense. I’m glad production listened too! Because it was in something called “The Power Rangers Bible” which had storylines that we were told were set in stone and could not be changed!
And yes we have! Though I have absolutely no idea where my journal is for Hayley so I won’t be able to say what we agreed on and discussed 100%. I think we decided that they had been friends for a few years before dating and Calvin secretly crushed on Hayley for a while. I think we went out for a drive in his truck to a beach one night to watch the sunset and he asked Hayley out. Nico can correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure I’m not pulling it out of nowhere! Haha
PEARL: That’s the cutest thing ever! You know, usually in Power Rangers they would just show the crush part (see: Tyler and Shelby, or Jake and Gia) without bothering to show the relationship part so it’s really cool that we started with Calvin and Hayley already established. But I would’ve loved to have seen that sunset scene. We all love Calvin and Hayley so much, their focus episodes are some of the best and most charming eps of the show.
ZOE: We really wanted to have flashbacks and conversations that alluded to the start of their romance but I guess it’s fun that the audience can fill it in for themselves :)
Thank you! Nico and I worked really really hard on the relationship and spent a lot of time getting to know each other off set before we started filming - and then obviously during the duration of filming. As a result we became really close, so our job was easy! The chemistry was already there!
PEARL: That’s so cute! The effort you guys put in really shows, even in the background scenes, how Calvin softens whenever Hayley is near him and how she’s always touching him... a lot of us are romantics at heart in this fandom so we love seeing that.
ZOE: Haha I love it! There’s so much opportunity to sneak those things in as the Rangers stand around as a group a lot! So we wanted to make it as believable as possible
PEARL: We’ve talked a lot about Hayley and I love all the new stuff we’ve learned about her but we also wanted to know more about you! Zali @2014federalbudget wanted to know: Being a kiwi, do you prefer to work at home in New Zealand or abroad in America/Canada? And are there are any classic New Zealand shows that you would be interested in being a part of?
ZOE: Working at home would be a lot easier as I’m pretty familiar with the way things work over here and ideally I want to be near family. Unfortunately our industry is so small and diversity is still an issue, so I’m finding I’m auditioning for a lot more projects overseas, mainly in America. I would’ve loved to be on Outrageous Fortune for a bit. It looked like a lot of fun and many talented actors that I look up to (Antonia Prebble, Claire Chitham, Sophie Henderson, Nicole Whippy, just to name a few) were on there and do amazing work.
PEARL: That makes sense, and that would be so cool! Did you know Antonia Prebble was on Power Rangers too?
ZOE: Yes I did! She was also on a show called The Tribe! I was in a remake of the show when I was twelve so I’ve been a fan of her work for a while!
PEARL: That’s amazing! I love the connections between Kiwi ranger actors, there are so many of you guys!
Kels (@rltarepulsas on twitter) asked a related question: Was there a role you saw growing up that made you want to act?
ZOE: It was Dakota Fanning in a role.. it may have been in I am Sam or Charlotte’s Webb - I can’t actually remember the specifics. But I do remember watching her and thinking “Oh that’s it. That’s the thing I want to do.”
PEARL: Dakota Fanning is super talented, that’s so cool! We also loved you on the Shannara Chronicles - how was that experience like and how was filming a more teen-oriented show different from a kids show like Power Rangers?
ZOE: Oh thank you! That was my first big international project and I was super anxious going into it but I had such a great time. The people involved were awesome. Very talented NZ actors and from overseas - Austin [Butler] is one of the sweetest people you could meet. I love doing fantasy too, and my character Zora is so much cooler than I am! Haha! I had to have archery training for that which was a lot of fun.
PEARL: Archery training sounds hardcore but then you also went through PR’s stunt training so I guess you can do anything!
We are all super excited to see you in more projects after PR! Ivory @lunarskye wanted to know if there are any projects you’ve been working on currently and if you can tell us anything about how they’re going?
ZOE: Thank you! At the moment I’m just enjoying being home after being in LA for over a month. With the down time I’m hoping to finally start writing, I have a few stories that I want to tell. But I’m auditioning for projects a lot of the time :)
PEARL: Oh, you’re a writer too? That’s so cool, what kind of stories do you write? Is it like scripts or do you prefer novel form?
ZOE: I’m not actually! Haha I just have some experiences and stories that I want to share. And they would be scripts. I definitely want to work behind the scenes as well as act :)
PEARL: Either way, that’s awesome! Did you get to do anything behind the scenes on Power Rangers? I know Peter [Sudarso] said he would pitch scripts to Chip occasionally and he even got to write an episode once.
ZOE: It’s something I’ve never thought that I could do but I’ve been so inspired lately to say something that it’s only a matter of time until I give in lol
Chip and the production team were great about that actually, in that they fully invited us to basically intern - be it shadowing directors if we wanted or submit scripts etc. Honestly I can’t speak for the whole cast but I do know we were super tired after working 6 days a week and there wasn’t much more we could give of ourselves when the week was over. It really was like an endurance test and I think for the most part we chose to focus on the task at hand and look after ourselves the best we could. Which meant on our day off we would relax and do whatever we needed to refresh ourselves. And yes, Peter’s episode was actually amazing, I hope he continues with that as well.
PEARL: Ah, that makes sense but it’s really cool that they let you do that! Speaking of the cast and your downtime, Kat @powerprincesses wanted to know, with you and Jordi [Webber] being the kiwis of the cast, was there any sort of culture clash with you guys? Did you take them out to tour New Zealand at any point and show them the sights?
ZOE: We had a few bonding trips before we started, one was heading out to a beautiful west coast beach called Piha together. We just spent time together and practised our morph on the sand lol it was cute!
Chip had an evil idea of picking us up super early in the morning a week or so before filming, to drive a few hours out of Auckland to do the Waitomo caves. Look them up, they’re extraordinary! You end up abseiling into this cave, and trudging through mud and water to see waterfalls and the amazing cave formations - and the glow worms! I’m pretty sure it was on our day off so none of us wanted to go as we were tired from training and all we wanted to do was sleep and prep. But Chip was right, it was one of the best times we had together.
Jordi took a few of the boys to his home in Rotorua, where they met his family and were introduced to some parts of the Maori culture. I know that was really special for them too.
PEARL: That all sounds so amazing! Those caves must have been seriously magical to witness. And that’s so cool about Jordi and the boys, I wish we got more of his Maori culture in the show, it would be really neat to teach more people about that. I think he’s only our second or third Maori actor on Power Rangers.
ZOE: It would’ve been super cool! But for some reason they didn’t have any New Zealand characters in our season!
PEARL: I noticed, that was so weird, especially since they let Chase not only be kiwi on the show in Dino Charge but he got whole episodes devoted to his New Zealand culture, including one where his little sister was part of a Maori dance group. But I guess since Ninja Steel is an anniversary season they wanted to take it back to the show’s American high school theme roots?
ZOE: I’m not sure! I think it has something to do with the tax incentives here where international productions have had to somehow showcase New Zealand for tourism benefits and have a certain amount of New Zealanders as cast. I think that’s changed cause we didn’t do that at all lol
PEARL: I definitely remember reading about a New Zealand grant starting with Dino Charge, yeah. I think it’s mentioned in the credits of each episode too. I think Peter also once told me that just having two kiwi actors in the cast was enough so maybe that’s what changed?
ZOE: I’m not sure. I remember Chip telling me that Jordi and I weren’t cast because of that as it didn’t apply anymore :) Makes sense as the new rangers are all American!
PEARL: Well that’s interesting... I’m glad you guys were cast anyway! It’s really so much fun watching you all each Saturday, I can’t express how much I love Ninja Steel.
I should wrap this up as I think I’ve asked a lot of questions already, so just one last one: Is there anything you can tell us about this last batch of upcoming Ninja Steel episodes, things to look forward to in general? Anything exciting for Hayley coming up?
ZOE: Us too :) Thanks so much! It means the world to me to have amazing fans like you. Thank you! And yes, I don’t want to give away too much but I think the best stuff with Hayley is yet to come xxxx

this is just me being curious but why do you like the kiss in episode 109? i like it just bc of the fact that Jaz couldn't resist when Flor started to kiss her, and i think Juli tried to reflect that in the scene but it ended up looking a lil bit weird? lol i know she felt super guilty bc of Elena so of course she was conflicted af lol
why do I like the kiss from ep 109 so much…okay, this is an easy question and I have the answer but the hard part is gonna be to turn my incoherent italian thoughts into coherent english words so bear with me a minute.
First thing I love about it is the part leading up to the kiss and the way everything is set up. If you think about the fact that Flor made Jaz come with her to Lu’s house because she knew they were gonna be alone and basically because she just wanted to seduce her and kiss her…I just…isn’t it amazing? Flor I applaud you! And this is like a Flor thing, she’s always so fucking contorted with the way she does things, she has the ability to set up a whole situation just to do one simple thing and I find that so sweet. And Jaz can always tell when Flor is doing this weird thing so it’s even more adorable.
The whole time they’re at Lu’s, before the kiss, Jaz is so lost lol she doesn’t know what to do, she keeps touching her neck, her chest, avoiding looking at Flor in the eyes. I think she could clearly read Flor’s intentions and was just worried that if Flor kissed her or made a move on her she would not be able to say no and she was SO right. The way Jaz starts to go towards the door makes me laugh so much because she’s so not sure about it hahaha she’s like “it’s best if we leave” but then by the way she walks and by the way she slows down immediately as soon as Flor starts going after her you can tell she doesn’t wanna leave.
I love that as soon as Flor touches Jaz, as soon as she grabs her wrists, Jaz just stops fighting, she just gives in. She takes a deep breath, Flor says “come on, stay, stay” and Jaz looks at her lips and that’s it, she’s fucked, she knows she’s gonna let Flor do whatever she wants. (By the way I just LOVE the way Viole delivered all those whispered “dale, quedate, dale” ah, just so good)
And now to the kiss! THE NOSE BUMP! Oh my god don’t let me start about how cute that is and also Flor is a fucking tease I love her. Jaz is at her mercy in that moment and Flor knows it. After the nose bump is Jaz the one to get closer, she’s the one to move forward (it’s really subtle) she’s just like “bitch just kiss me please I can’t anymore”. And I just love this bit so much because they are enjoying it, they are enjoying the situation, the teasing, the flirting. Jaz can pretend all she wants but bitch was turned on from the start and she was loving every second of it. The way they breathe into each other’s mouths after that first kiss….uuuuuuuuUUUUUuUUU I hate the music in ep 109 much better the music they put in the flashback of that scene in ep 110. Then of course Flor JUMPING ON JAZ just getting as close as possible…I love it, I love the kisses where they kiss with their whole body (does this make sense?). Flor  wants to feel Jaz’s body against hers and I think that’s Flor’s way of letting Jaz know that she wants her not just romantically but also sexually. And this is another reason why I love this kiss so much. Moving on… I love the way Flor touches Jaz’s face, neck, the way she grabs Jaz’s head, the way her hands hold Jaz’s face guiding her during the kiss. Amazing. Then, when we come back from the cut…uuuUUuu, I love the way Flor is pulling Jaz from her neck and the way she touches her shoulder sliding her hand down Jaz’s arm. And then…the thing I probably love most about this kiss is Jaz’s moan after the kiss. biiiiiiiitch that’s like the best thing. And her voice after that is so. fucking. low. oh god. And here we have one of the many examples of “turned on Jazmín del Río” who needs to keep her eyes closed a little longer to collect herself. I love that we have Jaz who has to take a moment to cool down and on the other hand we have Flor who keeps teasing her, getting closer, looking at her lips. If they weren’t at Lu’s house they would have probably fucked or at least done something more than kissing for sure.
And you know, I think neither of them felt guilty about that kiss. Their conversation about that is something like “we should maybe feel guilty but deep down we don’t (?)”. Flor is like “I feel kinda guilty towards Elena” and Jaz is like “You? I should be the one feeling guilty”…see? Flor “kinda feels” Jaz “should feel” so, at the end they don’t feel guilty about it. And I think that they don’t feel guilty about it because Jaz is not really WITH Elena and she doesn’t really want to make things work between them, she just wants Flor, and Flor knows it. Also, they both want each other so much that everyone just fades away really. Last thing, I love Jaz’s reaction to Flor asking “and what are you feeling?” lol it’s so fast because Lu comes in but Jaz is like “well fuck, the only thing I know now is that I’m wet” hahahahaah
Aaaaand I guess this is it :) I can say that the reason why that’s one of my favorite kisses has to do with a lot of things like the mood of the scene, the situation, the point of the story, Flor’s intentions, the fuel that started the kiss, the motivations behind it, the sexual tension, the emotional charge of the scene… it has to do with much more than just what their lips are doing.

The Brave...An underrated scene in Ep. 6.
Thought I might make a post about a scene that I thought was quite underrated, since Jalton scenes were the highlights of episode 6, The Seville Defection. It’s the scene where Amir is in the office with Ivan Sokolov, played by Pasha Lychnikoff, who I thought was brilliant by the way. His delivery of the lines and the lines themselves was what drew me. Here’s a transcript:
 ***
 “Muslim?” Ivan asks.
 Amir looks at him coolly.
“Fighting for your faith or is it against it?”
 Amir gives him a look.
“Confusing times,” says Ivan as he takes a drink.
“Not to me,” Amir finally says.
“You think I’m playing? I’m commiserating. I, too, am a casualty of two people fighting themselves. When I trained, communism was falling. I believed the great democracy was still possible. Ironic, right? A professor of history failing to see the inevitability of his own government’s cyclical return to dictatorship.”
“So, why stay? Why support a system you don’t believe in?”
“Paloma’s mother died when she was eight. She became what I believed in. Everything else, a means to an end. To defect will be to risk never seeing her. Worse, to be found out and killed. Who would take care of her then?”
Amir’s facial expression softens a bit.
“It’s easy to stand on principle until it’s the people you love who will suffer from it.”
 ***
“It’s easy to stand on principle until it’s the people you love who will suffer from it.” – This definitely foreshadowed Dalton and his team doing whatever it takes to rescue Jaz. When it’s your own people, you would do anything to get them back. It’s also telling because it makes you think – what would you do if your loved one was in trouble? How far would you be willing to go?
This short conversation between Amir and Ivan was so raw and honest. I think it’s easy to forget that in war, it’s not about us versus them. It’s about fighting the bad and the evil, which is often associated with specific groups of people. A while back, I read some negative comments about the show and to briefly paraphrase and summarize, what I understood is that this individual believed that The Brave was portraying a group of Americans going from country to country killing people for good and that that in itself is terrorism. To be fair, he is not wrong, and I think people fail to realize that those who our troops are fighting against are also soldiers. Just as much as we support the American troops and what these men and women do every day to ensure our freedom and safety, we have to remember that those who we are fighting against are also soldiers, who are risking their lives to fight for their country and fighting for what they believe is right. Sure, what if what they believe is right is not in fact right? I guess that’s the dilemma, the catch-22, if you will. Or what if they are like Ivan, who once had great hopes for his country but is now stuck working for people he no longer believes in because the alternative was worse? His experience also comes at a steep cost.
This is an American show after all, and obviously we as the audience stand with the characters, who in this case are Americans. But I think this show extends beyond borders. And I bring this up because this short scene where we get a glimpse of Ivan, the Russian spy, is really telling and honest. We see him as the “enemy” because he is a Russian spy. We don’t know what he’s done, but we deem him as the “enemy” because of what he represents; however, he is more than the government he works for. He is a history professor. He is also a father. He is also a man who had believed his country was capable of becoming better. It’s easy to demonize those we are fighting against, but the thing is life is not so black and white.
If anything, what these soldiers go through on a daily basis, we can to a tiny degree apply to our own daily lives. The Brave is so brilliantly written, and it’s damn good television. I have been waiting for a show like this for a long time, and I really hope that it gets renewed. That’s all for now. :)

Jaz Clemente releases new single 'Skylights'
Tumblr media
The songwriter and producer of R&B electrogroove known as Jaz Clemente has released their latest official single, “Skylights.” The single has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry. Part soul, part funk, and all rhythm, “Skylights” showcases Jaz Clemente as one of the most fresh and engaging electrogroove crews of 2018. With forthcoming EPs and LPs rumored to be in the works, fans seem to have much to look forward to in Jaz Clemente.
Oakland, CA's Jaz Clemente cites as main artistic influences Pink Floyd, Nile Rodgers, Santana, the Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and The Beatles. Jaz Clemente's own sound takes elements from each of these and adds something fresh and unique for a result unlike anything today's music fans have heard before. There's some Isaac Hayes in there, there's some Curtis Mayfield in there, and yes, there's a little Michael Jackson in there, too. With an emphasis on Motown-style vocals, disco-era guitar plucking and contemporary synth foundations, “Skylights” by Jaz Clemente has a little something for every avid electrogroove listener.
Commenting on the overall meaning of “Skylights,” Jaz Clemente says, “Skylights is waves of blue and possibilities, a hopeful promise to stick to what's real and what's should be, an open statement that it's about others and me, not just one or the other, that 'hope's on our side.'” Asked to describe their start in music, Jaz Clemente writes, “Many years of playing in gigging bands, wedding bands, bar bands in Tijuana, San Diego, and Oakland until the law of readiness kicked in, and I just had to stop singing other folks' messages and start writing and sharing my take on what's worth it.”
Jaz Clemente's current official bio describes them as: “the electro-groove synthesis of sultry R&B, puppy jazz, and swanky '70s disco together with fly-hi keys, dripping harmonies, and funkster guitars. Led by border-child Nemo C, Jaz Clemente songs express a love for oneself, reaching beyond comfort zones, and being a responsible planetarian.”
“Skylights” by Jaz Clemente is available from over 600 quality digital music stores online worldwide now. Get in early, electrogroove fans.

W. Jeremy - Phantasy (Get Up Recordings)
Get Up Recordings label owner W. Jeremy is back again with a new EP titled “Phantasy”. The EP includes two original tracks and two pumping remixes from the multi-talented Canadian DJ/producer export Karsten Sollors and Chi-town’s Andrew Emil. W. Jeremy is a NYC based DJ/producer whose history of working for DJs and record labels in the ’90s – ranging from Angel Moraes to Tony Humphries – has greatly influenced his DJ sets and production/remix style. His Get Up Recordings label is also clearly influenced by his musical past as well, with a colorful spectrum of artists and remixers including Kim Ann Foxman, Tedd Patterson, MATRiXXMAN, Rennie Foster, Gavin Russom, and Snuff Crew. The EP kicks off with the original version of “Phantasy”, a bumping house jam with bass driven percussion and euphoric breaks. First up on remix duties is Karsten Sollors, who has earned the attention of electronic music’s finest thanks to a resume of well-rounded accomplishments. With releases on Toolroom Records, Nervous, and Farris Wheel Recordings, Sollors is breaking boundaries within the house music pool. Outside of the studio, Sollors’ profile has immersed itself across clubs since his relocation to Chicago. Playing alongside the likes of Jay Lumen, Sante, Gene Farris, and Nick Warren, he has dropped an immense collection of music at his Saturday Sound-Bar residency in Chicago and also regularly at Primary, Spybar, and Annex. His remix of “Phantasy”, much like his DJ’ing, brings a superb driving tech house element to the package. Next up on the remix end is Andrew Emil, who has been a well-respected fixture in Chicago’s music scene for over a decade and a half. A concert-trained percussionist, Emil eventually moved to Chicago to attend Columbia College and study audio engineering and music composition. Emil, who has been deeply entrenched in Chicago’s thriving house music scene since the 1990s, has a sound that reflects an eclectic and mature marriage of classic and contemporary elements of Chicago house, infused with jazz and soul undercurrents. Not only has he put out releases on some of house music’s most elite labels, including OM Records, Seasons, four play music, Farris Wheel, Gallery Music Group, Look At You, .dotbleep, Kompute, Roam Recordings, Industry Recordings, Classic, and Panhandle, but Emil remains one of Chicago’s most respected and lauded DJs. He is a Resident DJ at Nu: The Outer Space Disco Dancing Society of Chicago, 2016 Primary Nightclub, and a featured resident at First Saturdays at the legendary Gramaphone Records. His remix here is a full-on Chi-town funk jazz vibe and an ode to Strictly Jaz Unit, a collective that included members such as Boo Williams and Glenn Underground. Rounding out the EP is the second original, “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter”, a lusciously hypnotic house track with swirling soundscapes, pulsating rhythms, and an acid-inspired arpeggiated lead.
DJ Heather (Blackcherry Recordings) – “Diggin’ “Heart” and the Andrew Emil Jaz Dub too. Great EP!” Anthony Pappa (Red Light District - “The best mix is the Karsten Sollors Remix. I will support it!” Distant People (Soul Elements Radio Show) – “Cool lively bounce on Andrew Emil’s Jaz Dub.” Blueshift (Nurvous Records) – “Karsten’s mix is my pick!” J. Caprice (High Maintenance) – “Very nice tracks. It’s really hard to pick a favorite!” Edground (Grooveland Music) – “This Andrew Emil Jaz Dub is amazing.” Kane Ian (Dustpan Recordings) – “Liking Andrew Emil’s Jaz Dub and The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter.” Kadabra (The House Hookup Radio Show) – “Holy Crap, the Heart Is A Lonely Hunter is fantastic.” Velanche (Club 91 Radio Show) – “Hard to beat the original, but the remixes are good too.” Kosta** (Vibe FM, Bucharest) – “Summer grooves right here! I enjoyed every track.”

Video Game Deep Cuts: Hitman vs. Edith Finch - Go!
The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
[Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include Hitman level design, What Remains of Edith Finch, and much, much more.
As I battle jetlag after my return from Asia to a sunny California spring, I've been thinking a lot this week about discoverability for games again. Shouldn't there be more niche game subscription services out there for those looking to support underappreciated/'different' titles? I love Humble Monthly, but some of the more mainstream subscribers seem to get grumpy about the quirkier indie titles in it at times - much like PS4 players litter indie YouTube trailer comments with fist-shaking.
And how about adding context to the games in a subscription with dev interview videos, 'Let's Play'-style playthoughs, or even analysis videos? Would any of you sign up for something like this? Curious...
- Simon, curator.]
-------------------
Passing Through Ghosts in Pac-Man (John Harris / Gamasutra Blogs) "This is an excerpt from my book Bug Voyage: A Tour of Classic Game Glitches, available in the current Rogue Souls Storybundle [SIMON'S NOTE: which I curated!]. The book also contains information on pseudorandom number generation, doing low-level math in binary and decimal, and how you can crash any Galaga machine without even putting money in."
Writing Indie Games Is Like Being a Musician. In the Bad Way. (Jeff Vogel / The Bottom Feeder) "Over the last couple years, I've gotten a fair amount of attention for my articles about the Indie Bubble and the Indie Glut.  (And even a GDC talk.) At last, I can complete the trilogy of articles. Now we can look around and see where we've ended up, a phase which I suspect will be permanent. [SIMON'S NOTE: Please read this.]"
Legendary Game Maker Peter Molyneux Talks Regrets and What's Next (Chris Suellentrop / Glixel) "That enthusiasm for the unknown is the hallmark of 57-year-old Molyneux's long career. He stopped by the Glixel offices in March to talk – barely – about his next game, Legacy, as well as to speak at length about everything from No Man's Sky and Pokémon Go to his aborted Kinect experiment, Milo."
toco toco ep.49, Yoko Taro, Game Creator (toco toco TV / YouTube) "In this episode, we spend the day in Osaka with Yoko Taro, director of the famous Drakengard and NieR series. Our first stop will be at PlatinumGames, the studio that was in charge of developing Yoko’s most recent title: NieR: Automata."
How Hitman’s Hokkaido level was made (Alex Wiltshire / RockPaperShotgun) "The latest Hitman['s]... levels are a jetset tour of places you believe could exist, but these aren’t just credible environments, they’re also machines for killing in. And the first season of Hitman closed with one of its best. Hokkaido is at once compact and expansive, melodramatic and credible, and I talked to IO about how it was designed."
Game Over, Uwe Boll (Darryn King / Vanity Fair) "The man known as the world’s worst director is now retired and running a Vancouver restaurant. But he’s still not done waiting for the world to give him his due. [SIMON'S NOTE: you really should read this one, if only for Boll's random Chris Kohler diss, haha.]"
Inside the Resilient ‘Team Fortress 2’ Community on the PlayStation 3 (Aron Garst / Motherboard) "To say that PS3 players got a raw deal is one hell of an understatement. But they've managed, and made friends along the way."
THOTH, And How I Talk About Games (Errant Signal / YouTube) "Just a little thing I made at the end of last month while fighting off some sickness. [SIMON'S NOTE: an interesting - if a bit self-doubt-y - meta-analysis from one of the better YouTube game analysis folks on how you should approach mechanics-led games in terms of commentary.]"
Valve has cut Dota 2 royalties, and workshop creators are crying foul (Arthur Gies / Polygon) "There’s unrest in Dota 2’s community this week, as several artists responsible for many of the free-to-play game’s popular cosmetic items allege that Steam owner and Dota 2 developer Valve Software has systematically reduced their earnings and may be permanently damaging the long-term viability of Dota 2’s business model."
Magic: The Gathering's Head Designer Has A Damn Hard Job (JR Goldberg / Kotaku) "“Magic is secretly, not really … it’s not one game,” head Magic: The Gathering designer Mark Rosewater told me. “It is actually a bunch of different games that all have a shared rule system. Every time I make a card set, I’m making the game for everybody, but for each person, it’s a different game to them.”"
Roam free: A history of open-world gaming (Richard Moss / Ars Technica) "Open-world video games bear the impossible promise—offering compelling, enjoyable open-endedness and freedom within the constraints of what is, by necessity of the medium, an extremely limited set of possible actions. These games provide a list of (predominantly violent) verbs that's minuscule in comparison to the options you would face in identical real-life situations. Yet, we can't get enough of them."
Tom Clancy's Inherent Silliness: Why Ghost Recon Wildlands Couldn't Escape Its Fate (Cameron Kunzelman / Paste) "Ghost Recon Wildlands is a silly game. One might be tempted to think that it’s an intentionally silly game bordering on satire. I mean, after all, it’s almost a parody of games in its genre: it’s a third-person shooter game where four operatives, a handler, and some almost-Communist rebels take on and fully dismantle the infrastructure of a country that’s been fully taken over by a drug cartel."
The Game Beat Weekly: The pressure to stay in line (Kyle Orland / TinyLetter) "These apologetic quotes both get at a truth that's rarely explicitly acknowledged in the world of game criticism: being out of step with the critical or fan consensus on a big-name game or franchise is often not an easy thing to do. At best, having a contrary opinion about a big game these days means being subject to a huge stream of nasty comments, tweets, and e-mails about your view."
The Last Game I Make Before I Die: The Crashlands Postmortem (Sam Coster / GDC / YouTube) "Crashlands was developed by a team of three brothers in response to one of them being diagnosed with late stage cancer. In this 2017 session, Butterscotch Shenanigans' Samuel Coster tells the parallel stories of one family's battle with cancer and the creation of a cross-platform crafting RPG, and find yourself inspired to continue your great work no matter what life throws at you."
The Growing Indie Game Development Scene of South Africa (Lena LeRay / IndieGames.com) "South Africa's video game development scene has been through a lot of ups and downs since it got started in the mid-90s. The indie scene in particular got its first big break in 2010, with the entry of Desktop Dungeons on the world stage."
Destiny's meta shifts are fascinating (Cole Tomashot / Zam) "A meta shift is usually the result of a content release, player discovery, or patch. What makes these meta shifts interesting, is that while they are occurring a push and pull relationship between developers and players reveals itself as both parties play a role in a game’s meta."
Meeting Andrzej Sapkowski, the writer who created The Witcher (Robert Purchese / Eurogamer) "Andrzej Sapkowski has something of a reputation. To start with, he's a big deal. He invented Geralt, witchers, Triss, Ciri, the whole thing - it all came out of his head. He has won awards and his work is revered, especially in Poland. More than once I've heard him described as the Polish Tolkien. But I've also heard he can be difficult - and I'm on my way to meet him."
The sound of SID: 35 years of chiptune’s influence on electronic music (James Newman / The Conversation) "Fortunately, Yannes did know something about music, as well as semiconductors and designing chips. And so in 1981 he began work on what would arguably become the most important milestone in videogame music and one whose influence still resonates to this day: the MOS Technology 6581, also known as the Sound Interface Device, but much better known as the SID. [SIMON'S NOTE: quite a few game soundtracks analyzed in this neat piece!]"
Balancing Cards in Clash Royale (Stefan Engblom / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 GDC session, Stefan Engblom, game designer on the Clash Royale team, talks about the philosophies and principles used for balancing cards and gameplay in Supercell's Clash Royale."
The Ten Most Important Early Computer and Video Games (Jaz Rignall / USGamer) "Today's gaming industry is a massive, multibillion dollar entertainment juggernaut. But what are its roots? I thought I'd take a trip back to the very dawn of gaming history and take a look at the devices, inventions, and innovations that gave rise to our favorite pastime."
Mike Tyson's Punch Out NES Nintendo 30th Anniversary (Gajillionaire / YouTube) "30 years ago on March 31, 1987, Little Mac defeated the Super Macho Man for the W.V.B.A. World Heavyweight Title. We look back with YouTube personalities from all over and remember back to that epic night. Then, sit back and watch the original “broadcast” of the classic Championship title fight!"
Three reasons streaming is replacing the Let’s Play industry (Michael Sawyer / Polygon) "YouTube personalities recording themselves playing games is big business, and it seems to be the dominant way for gaming influencers to make money on the platform. The art form is known as “Let’s Play,” although that term doesn’t have much in the way of a set definition. But why does it seem like so many personalities on YouTube are moving to livestreams?"
Jonathan Coulton - All This Time (Official Video) (Jonathan Coulton / YouTube) "From his new album Solid State, out April 28. The album has a companion graphic novel written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Albert Monteys. It's a science fiction story about the internet, the future, artificial intelligence, and how probably only love will save us. [SIMON'S NOTE: this song is wonderful, but the music video is what permits its inclusion in this roundup, heh.]"
Why Video Game Guns 'Feel Good' (Emmanuel Maiberg / Motherboard) "Six out of the top 10 bestselling video games in February heavily featured guns and shooting. The same was true in January and all of 2016. Like it or hate it, video games and guns have gone hand-in-hand for decades and there's no reason to assume that this will change in the near future. [SIMON'S NOTE: part of a series - also see Veteran Developers Remember the Weirdest Guns in Gaming, heh.]"
The sublime horror of the unknown: Ian Dallas and What Remains of Edith Finch (Kris Ligman / Zam) "Director Ian Dallas, as it turns out, was more than willing to discuss the artistic and literary influences behind What Remains of Edith Finch with me -- as well as chat about a few paths the game did not end up going down."
The Game Archaeologist: How DIKUMUD Shaped Modern MMOs (Justin Olivetti / Massively Overpowered) "Even though there are hundreds and thousands of MMOs spanning several decades, only a small handful were so incredibly influential that they changed the course of development for games from then on out. DikuMUD is one of these games, and it is responsible for more of what you experience in your current MMOs than you even know."
The art and joy of video game photography (Simon Parkin / Eurogamer) "Now, when facing up against a Hyrulian monstrosity, my first thought is not, 'Which sword should I use', but rather, 'To which spot should I lure the beast to make the best use of the light?' In 2017, in my game at least, more Links have died taking compendium shots than in encounters with sharks (and not only because the sharks in Hyrule are talkative, handsome and kind)."
Classic Game Postmortem: Maniac Mansion (Ron Gilbert / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2011 Classic Game Postmortem, Maniac Mansion developer Ron Gilbert revisits the classic adventure game and recounts tales from the game's development process. "
Strange Beasts, a sci-fi short about an augmented reality game (Jason Kottke / Magali Barbé / Kottke.org) "Magali Barbé wrote and directed this short sci-fi video about an imaginary augmented reality game called Strange Beasts.
