Plum blossoms at Kameido Sengen shrine 👇 It is said that when prince Yamato Takeru was travelling East, he had to cross the sea. Looking at it, he said loudly that it was so small and quiet that he could have jumped it. Hearing the prince, the sea god got angry and raised a terrible storm that engulfed Yamato Takeru's ship. His wife Tachibana Hime, understanding that the god of the sea wanted her husband's life, decided to jump into the sea, asking the god to take her life instead. Her sacrifice moved the god of the sea who stopped the storm. Tachibana Hime hairpin and comb were washed ashore in the Kameido Sengen shrine area, and kept in the shrine. On the shrine grounds there's a Fujizuka, a representation of Fujisan that you can visit if you have no chance of climbing the real thing. The plum blossoms have a wonderful colour here.

Onmyodo Mini-Session Report: Climbing A Waterfall
Tumblr media
Quite a short adventure! (about half an hour?)
Abe no Seimei was doing quite well for himself, gaining a Staff when he traversed through a series of Mountains. Because it was the Higurashi Naku season, he also earned many extra Training Cards when passing through a series of Woods! He soon met a Shugenja (who also carried a Staff). Together they traveled and encountered an Abura Samashi, and managed to defeat the spooky oil-thief yokai with their two Staffs, thus earning 2 Ofuda which Abe carried! The duo then met an old soothsayer, and traveled with him down to the South River. After passing a quaint bridge, they looked up and saw the terrifying DaiTengu atop a giant Mountain.
Thinking it would be easy to battle the Great Tengu as a Shugendo priest was among their party, the three decided to climb up the three-tiered waterfall and confront the beast. Not so easy, as none of the group had enough Grace to manage the climb, and despite an abundance of extra Training Cards, not one of them could help. The old Sennin simply gave up and left the party. Abe tried to climb but did not have enough extra Inyo power to survive the attempt and fell to his death! Only the Shugenja remained, trying to scale the falls. The poor priest was suddenly attacked by a succession of undefeated Yokai from past travels. He fought them back until the DaiTengu itself descended to attack him. Thus the priest was devoured! Well, I guess a lot did happen in 30 minutes...

Look at this fish-bird. Boom. You’re healthy now. This is Amabie. Artists in Japan have been making and sharing artwork of her to protect against the Coronavirus because legend has it that looking at a picture of her can protect one from disease. Whether you believe in it or not, it’s a wholesome sentiment and something nice to do while self-quarantining. If you want to hear more, Gaijin Goomba did a nice video on it. Yokai Tales did a nice video on it too. I think that channel could use some more love. Say safe and wash your hands. #amabie #アマビエ #yokai #art #mermaid #japaneselegend #coronavirus https://www.instagram.com/p/B9_C2caj47R/?igshid=d7abk48r3gq6

My visual take on:
AMABIE
アマビエ
“A Japanese legend dating back to the 1800s has been resurfacing across social media recently because of its tie to staving off epidemics. A three-legged mermaid or merman with long hair and beak, the Amabie falls within the tradition of the yōkai—which is a supernatural monster or spirit in Japanese culture— and is said to have appeared from the waters near Kumamoto.
The mythical tale states that the scale-covered creature emerged from the sea to tell prophecies about the upcoming harvests and potential destruction from disease. In the case of an epidemic, the legend states that people are supposed to draw the Amabie and share it with everyone who is ill.”

Kat Birmelin ‘Kuzu-no-ha’ Watercolors and white ink on hotpress paper. 8.5 x 11 inches. For Month of Love: Lies  “If you love me, come and visit, in the forest of Shinoda in Izumi, the resentful kudzu leaf.” - Kuzu-no-ha In Japan there is a legend of a white fox who asks a man named Abe no Yasuna to protect her from a hunter pursuing her for her liver (for medicine). Knowing that white foxes are considered sacred beings, he obliges, and fights the hunter so the fox can escape. Yasuna becomes wounded, and after the hunter leaves him, a beautiful woman emerges from the forest and finds Yasuna. She tells him her name is Kuzu-no-ha, and she helps him limp back to his home where she tends to him.  In time the pair fall in love and are married, and Kuzu-no-ha bears him a son. The trio live happily together for a time, but one day Kuzu-no-ha lets down her guard, and her son sees her in her true form, a white fox. Because of this she must leave, returning to her true nature and leaving her son and husband behind forever.  Yasuna build a shrine dedicated to his wife, known as the Kuzunoha Inari Shrine. To this day, the shrine still stands as a testament to this love and legend in Osaka, Japan.

Today's #matriarchymarch is the legendary Empress Jingu, of Japan. Empress Jingu remains a bit of a controversial historical figure because there is little no hard proof of her life, and many if her stories cross into the superhuman. Jingu is supposedly a descendent of the legendary Korean Prince Amenohiboko, and was the consort of Emperor Chuai until his death. She then became Regent until their son inherited the throne, becoming Emperor Ojin. Before the Meiji period, Jingu was considered to get the 15th imperial ruler according to the traditional line of succession, but has since had her name removed, with her son taking her place. According to legend, she led an invasion of Korea, and was victorious after three years. However it's said she remained pregnant with her son this entire time, and did not give birth until she was back in Japan. Her son is sometimes deified as Hachiman, the god of war. Others say she was really the shaman queen Himiko. #matriarch #matriarchy #empress #empressjingu #onnabugeisha #femalesamurai #femalewarrior #mightygirl #femmefatal #femmemyth #herstory #history #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #japaneselegend #portrait #womenpaintingwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu_XFEwlSuF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qelcriyv0p02

Koi no takinobori (Koi's waterfall climbing) To succeed vigorously in life. The symbolism of Koi Fish in Japan is good fortune, abundance and luck. They are often associated with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. In Buddhism, they represent courage. The symbolic meaning of koi fish stem from the Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate where a koi fish swam upstream, through waterfalls and other obstacles to reach the top of the mountain where the "Dragon Gate" was. The legend says that when the koi finally reached the top, it transformed into a dragon, one of the most auspicious creatures in the Chinese culture. Yin yang koi represent the duality and harmony of life. In Taoism, yin and yang further symbolise the dueling sides of all the things in life. The circular movement of the fish represents the belief that all things in life are connected. It is about the dualities, black and white, positive and negative, good and bad, male and female, darkness and light, all forces in life that seem to battle against each other. In its essence it represents the balance in order to keep the chi flowing which is the life force of all the things on earth. Balancing the two opposites in our lives is what makes a person whole and complete.
