Hino Rei, Episode 10
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The very first appearance of Rei! And yes, I did decide after drawing everything else that I should include an ofuda and that's why she's holding it weird.

Where to receive Juyohin (sacred items for home worship) overseas
It can be difficult for practitioners of Shinto who live far from a shrine, especially when unable to receive the sacred items used for home worship. Fortunately there are shrines overseas that can support and so I have compiled a list below. If you know of any other shrines, please contact me at [email protected]
(Total 6 shrines) as of May 5th, 2023:
Hilo Daijingu:
 https://hilodaijingu.amebaownd.com/pages/215923/page_201511290156
Kamunabi Ban'yu Ko Shinto Shrine:
 https://www.atelierkanawa.com/amulets
Shusse Inari Shrine of America:
 https://shintoinari.org/shinto-items/
Daijingu Temple of Hawaii (USA Only):
https://daijingutemple.org/product-category-omamori/omamori/
Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha (USA Only):
http://www.e-shrine.org/omamori.html
Izumo Taishakyo of Hawaii (USA Only):
https://www.izumotaishahawaii.com/order
--
Konko Faith related: To learn how to worship at home for Konko Faith, please contact Konkokyo International Center at [email protected], or you may contact me directly at [email protected]
--
 Additional Resources:
--
Shingyo Zan Kosenji (For Buddhist worship):
https://kosen-ji.org/shop-%26-resources/ols/categories/476bblu84k
Gasshodo:
 https://gasshodo.com/product-category/omamori-ofuda/
This site is connected to a Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temple. It is maintained by a layperson volunteer. It is a good resource for acquiring legitimate items for Shinbutsu-related worship - Ofuda, Omamori, Altar tools, including an inexpensive Ofuda stand, and even Engimono like Ema. However, most of these items will need to be used in the proper Buddhist context – it is best to email to ask
Shrine Space:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/shrinespace/?etsrc=sdt
This is primarily a shop of handmade altar items, but there are also Juyohin available as the owner is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest.

A Magical Girl character design for an upcoming Apex Society story. I don't have a name or backstory for the character yet.
Hey, all, sorry for not giving an update on my situation.
I was getting a bit burned out on drawing, plus I had reading to do for the upcoming season of my podcast, so I decided to take a short break. I came back, and wouldn't you know it, my scanner decided to stop functioning properly. Now, this is a big scanner for comic book pages, and as a specialty item is pretty expensive (I got it years back with a one-time government grant). I get some tax money back next month, so I'll be able to afford a new one then, but until then, I'm stuck only being able to scan smaller images with my old one (even this little drawing took two passes). So I'm on hiatus for a bit. Sorry about all this mess.

I had a post in my drafts about trying to find a different US/Abroad Shinto Shrine to patronage as a not-in-Japan Shinto practitioner. I was looking for shrines due to people's issues with Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America— primarily that the worship hall is possibly used as a Dōjō which would be wrong, issues with the Inari-shrine "repurposed" for Ame-No-Uzume-No-Mikoto, and a particular affiliated author; as well as a personal reason I'll discuss in a minute. I'm not sure how accurate any of the claims are but I wanted an alternative— my main option being Daijingu Temple of Hawaii—but I needed to find one offering Ame-No-Uzume-No-Mikoto Ofuda. None of the options seem to. I thought I'd get guidance and Jingu Taima from a different shrine, but get Ame-No-Uzume-No-Mikoto's ofuda from Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America until I could find an alternative.
While I was editing that post today I came across completely unexpected news: Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is closing at the end of June.
Here is the Shrine's official statement:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that we will be transferring the deities to Shinmei Spiritual Centre.
First, may we express our deepest gratitude to Rev. and Mrs. Barrish for their many years of dedication and for sharing the profound practice of Shinto with thousands of members and visitors for over 20 years. At this time, however, they will be retiring due to health reasons.
Next, we are so very grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who have helped support Tsubaki America shrine activities over the years. Please continue to keep the kamisama in your hearts and in your daily activities.
June 25, 2023 we will conduct Nagoshi no Oharahi (Mid Year Great Purification). This will be our final public ceremony at Tsubaki America, and we welcome all Members to attend this celebration.
Additionally, Shin Mei Spiritual Centre near Victoria, B.C., a branch of Tsubaki Grand Shrine Japan, is active and continues to welcome visitors (www.shinmei.ca) for gokitoh kigansai. Omamori and kamidana items from Tsubaki Grand Shrine Japan will continue to be available through Shin Mei.
This is so sudden and leaves me hanging certainly. I will have to contact another shrine to send my Ofuda at the end of the year. I have no way of knowing if Shin Mei Spiritual Centre is legitimate. I wish I had someone to talk to.
I had conversed with Rev Barrish a few times, he wasn't super helpful to me and pushed the facebook page more than answers, this was my initial reason for desiring another shrine to get guidence from— wanting a better teacher. I'm not speaking for others this is my personal experience with Rev Barrish. I have many questions but didn't feel like reaching out to him would be useful so I've been doing the best I can with the knowledge I have.
Daijingu Temple of Hawaii is very pantheistic, seeing Amaterasu-Ōmikami as the supreme being and source of all things (their words not mine), but even if I don't 100% agree with this particular shrine's theology I thought they may still give good guidance on correct practices. Granted their theology still seems like it speaks to me more than TGSA's did.
I'm sure they will accept omamori at the end of year so I'm not too concerned there, but where will I get ofuda of Ame-No-Uzume-No-Mikoto for next year? My only option seems to be Shin Mei Spiritual Centre.... but I only want to do that if it is legitimately offering true sacred omamori. Edit: According to @/livingwithkami she lists this shrine as legitimate, so thats good news.
Anyways this was a major shock. I may still post the other thing I wrote but with edits of course to account for this shrine closing. Life is so difficult to navigate right now, more difficult than its ever been, trying to honor Kamisama correctly with correct teachers is such a struggle... but I don't want to give it up.

Paper ofuda with sticker vinyl
Need some ofuda spell papers for your next cosplay? Why not try PSV sticker vinyl? You can make them with your own vinyl cutter or one from a library maker's space! Here's how I made Camilla's so you can too! #cosplay #tutorial
Ofuda appear in all sorts of cosplays, from traditional to more fantasy designs. While you can print some out, others like metallic designs don’t work in a printer. Or perhaps you don’t have a printer but you have a vinyl cutter (or have access to one at the library or a maker’s space). Well, good news. You can make ofuda with sticker vinyl! Metallic gold designs on purple…

The Komuso Traveler in the Onmyodo Card Game
Tumblr media
One of many unique Travelers that you can meet in the Onmyodo Game, the Komuso are famous Buddhist monks with musical ability! Adorned with their iconic head baskets and playing shakuhachi flutes, the Komuso maintained hidden identities and performed musical Zen Buddhist rituals of meditation.
This 'Monk of Nothingness' is a quite versatile and useful member of any traveling group in the game, with high value in most Traits.
His soothing presence alone grants an Empathy bonus to all of the other group members! If defeated, the Komuso dies, but not before passing his Grace points to the remaining group.
GAME TIP:
During the microseason of Kinsenka Saku, December 2nd through 6th, Musical Travelers such as the Komuso cannot be Attacked!

HAVE I MENTIONNED RECENTLY THAT MY SISTER IS THE MOST AMAZING PERSON ON THE FUCKING PLANET?????? 😭💕
She went to see the new Lupin III kabuki play on my behalf, called me on the phone for an entire hour to give me a detailed report and listen to me nerd out about the anime references, and then she sent me official merch of the play for Christmas all the way from friggin' Japan. She is amazing, I do not deserve her 😭

A small bundle of pink carnations clustered about a rolled ofuda, tied with a simple black ribbon.
Tumblr media
Send my muse some flowers and they'll react to their meaning
Pink Carnation — “I’ll never forget you.”
For what felt to be minutes stretched into hours, I looked at the ofuda and the flowers adorning it, considering the meaning behind them. It was held in my hands, light as a feather it would be for some, but heavy in my own as I absentmindedly brushed the silken ribbon; it was during this time that I was not in the present time of my life, but had wandered elsewhere, to another place, another existence.
I saw the shrine a few paces before me under the beautiful glow of moonlight. The stone stairs glittered silver as water trickled down the steps from the rainshower earlier. Leading me towards it were the tōrō, aglow with the flicker of flame and firefly light burning against the dark.
I squeezed the ofuda, remembering the ones father said permeated with a kami's power, and how I would help distribute them for protection at the time. The image filled me with warmth and sorrow all the same; those days were bygone now.
Since then, I have worked on helping rebuild what was once lost. Perhaps someone remembered me from then, the young girl training to be a miko, the one who was swallowed by the river and sank into its depths ..
The black ribbon beckons my attention, after all, it is the color of mourning.
To know that someone out there perhaps remembers me from a former life, of a time before war ravaged our lands, I could not help but wonder..
..if they were aware of what became of me.

My sleep deprived 8 AM brain wanted to sketch Post Canon AU Ayushiki again on my sketchbook.
(headcanon is that Ayumi's able to walk on a good day, but when she uses too much magic or the Nirvana starts flaring up then she relies on a wheelchair/Yoshiki carrying her.)
