This was my birthday gift to @aime-aine, my best friend, my sister, my soulmate, my favorite goblin and possibly the best thing that's ever happened to me. Y'all may know her as the person who crocheted me a whole-ass doll of Havelock Vetinari, got me a ticket to an Arsène-Lupin-themed treasure hunt, and gifted me a cursed russian satanic tarot.

I've known Aime for the better part of a decade, and while our paths have been diverging -only geographically- lately, I know we'll be by each-other's side for the rest of our lives.

Here's to ten years of friendship, silly jokes, tears of laughter, and sharing three braincells. I hope your path takes you to beautiful places, and crosses mine often. Y'a glouglou tibia ❤

How to get cursed by your best friend

Let me preface this by saying that I do not believe in the predictive powers of tarot, or in any form of magic, occultism, paganism, communing with the dead or anything. I just collect tarot decks because they look really cool.

My best friend, Aime, is aware that I am the Tarot Person (TM) in our group of friends. So one day she messages me saying “Hey Elliott, I’ve got a Russian Tarot of Shadows that’s looking for a new home”. I, who does not speak a word of Russian or understand Cyrillic, and will therefore not be able to use this deck, of course say “Fuck yeah, give it to me”.

Yesterday we meet up in a park, and she hands me the tarot box. It’s brand new, barely open.

This cover is not reassuring at all.

Aime: Here it says [guttural Russian words] Satan. And here [more guttural Russian] Lilith.

Okay. Cursed object alert.

I open it, start looking at the cards, which are also brand new. All the writing is in Cyrillic, and so is the handbook, so I'm going to need Aime's help to decipher it.

Slightly creepy, but cool. I’m confused by the numbers – the cards I’m looking at are numbered 38, 39, 40, 41… The Marseilles tarot and Rider Waite Smith tarot I know have 22 Major Arcanas and four houses with cards going from one to ten plus four figures. This one, clearly, does not. I hold up a card picturing what can only be described as a baby being pierced by several arrows.

Me: What does this one say?

Aime: [guttural Russian] [disgusted confusion dot jpeg] The… volunteer???

Great. That sounds lovely. I rifle through more cards, with Aime looking over my shoulder in varying levels of disgust, and I finally locate a handful of cards bearing roman numerals – likely the Major Arcanas.

They do not look like any Major Arcana I know.

Me: What’s this one?

Aime: Asmodeus.

Me: Damn. Okay, and this?

Aime: [more guttural russian] Eeerrrr… the Black… Sabbath?

Me: I don’t recognize any of the cards :/

Aime: Of course you don’t, I told you, it’s a Tarot of Shadows, not a western one.

Okay. So not only can I not read the writings but I also can’t use my knowledge of RWS Tarot. We’re in completely unknown territory here.

Aime grabs the handbook while I keep looking at the various illustrations of deformed people and creatures getting stabbed to death, and she flips through it to a section called “How to do a reading.”

Aime: It says here [guttural Russian]. [dramatic expression] WARNING!!! When doing a reading, always wear black clothes. What??

Me: Okay, I’ve got some.

Aime: You’ll need two… [guttural Russian] Candles. Black candles.

Me: Oooookay?

Aime: [worried look]

Other instructions include making a circle (we debated what kind of circle it should be, and concluded that it at least needed to be tangible, but something like a hula hoop could do), not “showing” your face (why was “showing” between quote marks??), protecting your heart (ie, wearing something over it??), not wearing a cross, and DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CROSS YOURSELF. This tarot clearly doesn't like Christianity. There’s also a bit about needing to clean the deck with holy water after reading, but you should not keep the holy water anywhere near you during the reading.

Me: Does it say what happens if I don't follow the rules? Do I get an unreliable result, or do I burst into flames? I'd really like to know if there's a risk of me bursting into demonic flames.

Aime: Here it says “WE ARE NOW COMMUNING WITH DEMONS!” Okay, we’re totally in satanic territory here. What the fuck??

Me, not sure whether to be delighted or terrified: This just gets better and better.

Aime: If during the reading, the master or the client suddenly feels a… [guttural Russian] great terror???

Me: What???

Aime: then you need to immediately interrupt the reading, spray holy water, and shout [Russian word] three time. Удались! Удались! Удались! It means… kinda like “go away”, but much stronger.

Me: Fuck off?*  *it actually means “begone” but we don’t have that word in French so I said “casse-toi”

Aime: Yeah. [mimics throwing holy water] “FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF!”

Me: [horrified look]

Aime: [horrified look]

Me: Aime, what the fuck did you just give me. Where did you even get that deck.

Aime: [I’m so sorry dot jpeg] I don’t know.

Me: What.

Aime: The other day my family wanted to play a card game, and when we opened the cupboard with our card games in it, it fell down.

Me: It did what???

Aime: So we figured we had too much stuff in it and we needed to get rid of some stuff, and we found this tarot deck. Brand new, never opened. If it's any reassurance, I'm pretty sure I've seen it in the house before and it didn't pop into existence yesterday. I think one of my aunts gave it to us.

Me: I’m pretty sure you’ve just cursed me on the next seven generations.

Aime: I can take it back if you want 🥺

Me: Nah it’s okay, I don’t want any kids.

So yeah. If I disappear from the surface of Tumblr, I was probably killed by vengeful demons after a botched satanic tarot reading.

(after some research, it turns out that the Tarot of Shadows was created in the 2000s by a famous Russian occultist who also created half a dozen other decks including the “Shakespeare Tarot”, and not, as I had feared, an occult ritual from the dawn of time of Slavic folklore.)

16. How do they react when the other is upset? How do they try to help?

When the other is upset, the calmer and more temperate of the two (Aime) tries to get the other more closed off one (Seith) to talk it out or get it out of her system so they can resolve whatever bothering her. When Aïme is the one's who's upset—Seith gives her time and space to herself so she can calm down and gather her thoughts together and face whatever's upsetting her.

17. Would they have kids together?

I don't think so, they are too mentally and psychologically unfit for it, so they may opt out of that option and, instead, choose something like a cat, dog, or racoon. That is one of the many things they agree one, actually. "No child shall ever cross our path." Lmao.

What values do they not share?

Seith believes that selfishness, narcissism, lying, deceit, and toughening her way out of problems is the way to go and survive in a cruel way like the one they are currently living in, she valued self-preservation and survival above all else due to the toxic, emotionally, and physically abusive environment she grew up, felt trapped in, she couldn't be herself without being punished by those around her for a very long time—people trying to radically change, and indoctrinate her mind by using physical, psychological, and emotional means to get the values her environment practiced stuck and settled into her mind forever.

Seith practiced those values to a great extent, going as far as to conveniently disguise herself in order to join and take over certain jobs and organisations to feed and provide for herself, if she is interacting with someone, it's because they are useful to her in someway majority of the time, self-preservation always comes first when it comes to her.

Aime on the other hand, believes that being kind, self-sacrificing, loving, forgiving, and accommodating to those around her (to an insane and unhealthy degree) is how people like her should be and the only way that she would be loved back, this has gotten her hurt, abused, and taken advantage of in more terrible ways than several. However, she still doesn't give up and stays positive and hopeful—she is the sister of toxic positivity and people-pleasing.

She developed this mindset as a survival and defense-mechanism due to her emotionally and psychologically abusive, secluded, and isolating environment—it was a quick way for her to connect with others (even if it meant clipping majority of what we consider human qualities off of her), it also brought her comfort in times of struggle and great joy when she sees people are helped, return, and reward her (by) kindness.

How do they reconcile those differences?

Since Seith and Aïme really care about each other, so they try to see each other's views and discuss about them to come to some middle ground. They also practice, and honor them for the sake of the other . . . Seith is visibly protective of Aime( is too, but in an indirect manner), so she tries her hardest to practice and learn what Aime believes in as she also agrees with those values, Aime also does the same. They encourage each other to practice the other's values.
