Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Dawn of the Dead is one of the best films in the zombie genre. It's frightening, atmospheric, gory, and a touch of action transitions you nicely into the slight bits of comedic relief. Its influence is so strong it's hard to know unless you've explored the genre. Either way, it’s a nightmare you don’t want to miss.

Nurse Ana (Sarah Polley) wakes up one morning to find the dead coming back to life. One bite soon proves fatal and then, you’re back up again, ready to tear your former loved ones to pieces. Taking refuge in a nearby mall, she, Kenneth (Ving Rhames), Michael (Jake Weber), Andre (Mekhi Phifer), his pregnant wife Luda ((Inna Korobkina), and security guards C.J. (Michael Kelly), Bart (Michael Barry), and Terry (Kevin Zegers) hunker down and wait.

Let's start with the opening credits, which perfectly set the mood. It’s like they’re written in blood on a glass sheet and a blast of air pushes them away in streaks. It makes you uneasy. If your knees get weak, you're in trouble. The entire film is lit with a sickly green that makes you reach for the hand sanitizer. Even when the survivors make themselves comfortable in the mall, they can't. At some point, the infected dead pawing at the doors will have to be dealt with. The disease cannot be ignored.

Dawn of the Dead offers what you expect and gives us something new. You get gore and gruesome deaths. We also see that the ones to fear aren’t necessarily the obvious threats. The three rent-a-cops in the Milwaukee mall immediately raise red flags with their delusions of grandeur. What choice do our heroes have but to take a chance with these three? Thankfully, this antagonism isn’t overdone. Director Zack Snyder knows we came here for the zombies. Most nerve-frying scenes come when people investigate dark spaces or try to stay calm as zombies rush towards a door.

Zombies who run, and come from a virus? We saw these concepts introduced in 28 Days Later. Dawn of the Dead combines these new ideas with the rotting, living corpses of George A. Romero. It also offers the mandatory “one memorable zombie” every good movie of this type must contain. In many ways, this is less a remake than a re-imagining. Malls meant something different in 1978. As such, there’s not much subtext present, but that’s ok. The screenplay by James Gunn allows you to easily tell all the characters apart - quite a feat considering how many there are - and makes you care enough about them that you get upset when someone dies.

This horror remake manages to scare, reinvigorate the zombie genre, and offers memorable scenes. There’s a rather sweet friendship that forms between Kenneth and Andy (Bruce Bohne), all without them communicating face-to-face. The characters are smart. The script is genre-savvy. Dawn of the Dead satisfied, all the way to the stylish end credits, which include a frightening epilogue you don’t want to miss. (Theatrical version on Blu-ray, May 23, 2021)
