Akechi

Akechi hardly gives you a lot of physical affection since he's typically busy. You get praise and he's honest with his feelings, but not a lot of physical affection.

So he is a tad surprised that you move out of the way when he's going to give you a kiss. Akechi stares at you for a bit and for a split second he thinks he did something wrong or you're hiding something from him and don't want kisses. But he notices the small smile on your face and rolls his eyes.

He does try to give you another kiss before he leaves and narrows his eyes when you avoid that kiss too. Can't help a scoff at whatever game you're playing. You move to try and hug him at least and he gives a pleasant smile and avoids your hug as he leaves for work.

You wanted to start this game of yours, so he'll play it too. You see him at lunch and when he gets a break, you and him hang out again. And the whole time he's avoiding any kind of physical affection that you try to give him. Doesn't even try giving you kisses now until you admit defeat.

When he gets home from work, annoyed with his superiors and the fact that he hasn't had any kind of love from you, well he's quick to call you over and tell you that he's tired of this game you're playing. Is much more pleased when you do sit down with him and pepper his face with kisses.

Iwai

Also not an overly affectionate person, but always kisses you before he goes to work. His job can be dangerous and he don't know what bullshit the police could come up with to bring him in or what yakuza buddies he might see that could bring trouble.

But you avoid the kiss he wants to give you and he stares at you for a moment. Will ask you if you're sick or something and you just smile up at him and shake your head. Iwai goes to kiss you again, but you dodge out of the way and he rolls his eyes.

You visit Iwai at work during the day and Iwai tries to kiss you again when no one is in the store. Iwai never engages in affection when you're at his store. You almost forget your game at his actions, but still move aside.

Some regulars call Iwai out throughout the day of seeming grumpier than usual, to which he states that he's not grumpy and for them to hurry up and get out. At home, Iwai is still grumpy and doesn't even try to give you affection. Obviously you don't want it for some reason and he's not going to pester you.

It isn't until he's sitting down that you approach him and give him a kiss to the cheek. That causes him to raise an eyebrow and ask if you're done being childish now. You give him a grin and attack his face with kisses. You have to wear a scarf or something for all the bite marks your neck has the next day.

Maruki

He wanted to give you a kiss to your cheek before he left for work. Was a bit surprised when you took a few steps to the side instead. Maruki definitely pouts a bit. But at least you give him a hug.

Maruki is at school and humming and overthinking about why you avoided his kiss. Maybe this is like one of those TikTok trends his students talk about?

You visit him at lunch and he's happy to see you and ready to kiss you again. But you avoid his kisses again. You make some excuse about someone seeing and he pouts more.

That night he gets home and wants to just relax and kiss you and you still don't let him. Maruki lets out a sigh and asks if he did something wrong or if you're doing okay and that's why you're avoiding him.

At his sad face, you do give in and tell him what you've been playful and that's why you're avoiding his kisses. Maruki was so pouty at not kissing you that he didn't even notice you were being silly. He can't help a chuckle as he realizes his silliness. Thankfully you're quick to make things better by having him sit down and just peppering his face in kisses.

The Persona 5 Post-Mortem, Part Two: What I Did Like 8)

Okay let's talk about what I liked about Persona 5 Royal because despite tearing it a new one last post I think it did a lot of good things.

Joker is a great fucking character.

We made it, folks, we did it. We have a player-directed mostly silent protagonist who is just bursting with personality.

My biggest and loudest complaint about Persona 4 Golden was the protagonist. I felt like he was such a blank, empty void that the game frequently had to compensate for the space he should have filled.

Joker was the perfect answer to almost everything. He was vibrant, funny, heartfelt, and kind of a bitch. He had force of personality. There was backstory to him that drove the story. Instead of "grey dude staying in small town for a year, no further details available" we had

"Do-gooder gets framed for assault and is forced out of his small hometown, moving to Fucking Tokyo to attend a prestigious but strict high school, all while being told at every turn to make himself small, to not make waves lest he fuck up his life more. He tries to do as he's told but his desire to push back and protect people gets him in trouble almost immediately."

P4MC gets involved in the Inaba murder mystery because he fell in a TV; Yosuke is the one with personal motivation to start with. Joker gets involved in the Metaverse because he's genuinely motivated to help people and push back against authority. If you took out the personas, the wild cards, the supernatural element of this story, Joker would still be an interesting person and something would have happened to him regardless.

Joker also is much more than a passive observer to the plot. He is a catalyst. He is inherently wrapped up in the central conflict. He's a showoff, he has a vicious grin when he's pulled off something clever, he's actually a Trickster. He's a fucking character!

And while he is player-directed, Joker absolutely, genuinely has his own motivations separate from player control. He has attachments that the player doesn't decide for him, and in Royal it becomes the most shocking moment of the game.

There is more authorship to Joker, and he is not just the player's avatar. There was zero reason for P4MC to be gender locked because he was almost entirely built from the player's projection. Joker succeeds by being his own person who the player is guiding.

The secondary cast of the game is frequently very good.

Hot take: I think Sojiro is a better character than at least half of the Thieves. He's more complex, has more gravity, and feels like a part of the world in the way the literal main cast often does not.

And it's not just Sojiro. I think the non-teammate SLinks in P5R are broadly speaking much better than the previous games. Yeah, I am annoyed at how much Atlus just cannot stop writing grizzly sad dads while keeping single moms off camera, but. i cannot deny that the actual characters we get are good.

Sojiro, Maruki, Kawakami, Tae, Iwai, Toranosuke, even Mishima who I hated as a person but have to admit he was an interesting link. Compared to previous Persona games, I was more interested and invested in more SLinks in this game than in P3 and P4. And honestly I don't think any were Actively Terrible like, say, P3's Hanged Man or P4's Devil.

I think this is aided by how varied the SLinks are. Many of the SLinks in P3 and P4 are other students, and that kind of limited what stories they could tell, imo. In P5R, we have an ex-yakuza gun nut who adopted an abandoned child, a fairly unethical disgraced doctor who is trying to test a new drug, a failed politician who still believes in governance of the people-- these are interesting! They're good! Not to be flippant but they're better than "yet another classmate, but this one is Wacky because X reason."

Living in digital Tokyo was honestly a delight.

Okay yes I have some complaints about the lack of localization in P5R's environments and how the lack of context really hurt a few sections of this game and I really stand by that.

HOWEVER, as someone with a dear friend and penpal in Tokyo, it was... honestly really nice to explore the city as much as the game let me. One of the real joys of the game was just experiencing a simulacrum of that space for a year. I got a laugh out of the POLLEN WARNING!!!! days and how similar they are to my own days in Georgia. And as someone who has never lived in a city and only academically understands how they are laid out and function, just exploring busy streets was fun.

A few times, i skipped using the Fast Travel menu just to walk to the various places I needed to visit.

I loved Kichijoji the most. 8) And the little moments when i recognized a place (my gasp of delight at the FIRST TIME I saw Shinjuku!!!), that was fun because learning the layout of Tokyo gave all those locations more of a sense of scale and place.

Inaba was frankly very similar to my own super small midwestern town in America. Digital Tokyo was a new experience I really enjoyed.

Morgana was a talking cat that slept in Joker's school desk and rode around in his bag.

Enough fucking said. As someone who is not a dog person, it's nice to finally have a game for the Cat People. Finally some goddamn representation.

Yes, I think Joker faking his own death and Yaldaboath as the final boss were messy as hell, BUT...... they were stylish.

I could (and have) sat here and poked holes in these sequences, the two Huge Setpieces that anchor the game. We all know by now that both are messy as hell, don't make a lot of sense, and don't really hold up to scrutiny.

However: unlike the Izanami reveal in P4G which Just Sucked (and I will never stop mocking), these flawed climaxes are smoothed over by the full tilt all-in bombast employed.

They were fun enough to make me go "well, I can't be mad at every damn thing." Which is something.

The Third Semester/Royal Content.

This probably needs to be its own post, because it is dense enough to be its own game and singlehandedly saved Persona 5.

ok i realize that post was made to stir up drama (or else it wouldn't have been phrased or tagged the way it was (and it was successful too, have another anon!)) but i'm actually really intrigued by your interpretation? social links/confidants seem to me to be inherently exploitative in favor of the mc so the idea that it's the teammates that are taking advantage is really interesting. would you be willing to explain more clearly how you reached that conclusion?

Ren’s help for the PT fulfilled the gameplay need of having your party members get stronger through abilities, while at the same time helping them resolve a problem in their personal lives. Very few, if any, of the rank scenes involved conversations in which Ren expressed parts of himself, his past, his current situation, things he considered important, things he felt as a person. It was all, for the most part, reactions to things that the PT had said and done.

I also want to note that Confidants in P5R are specifically stated as give and take, which means there is an inherent expectation of you do x for me and I do y for you. That is a choice for the story and a choice meant to show off the aesthetics and vibe of the story, which is a semi-seedy, underhanded, in the shadows of society way of living. I’m not criticizing the PT for being written this way, I’m saying that it does absolutely nothing for Ren as a person that actually connects to him.

This “react instead of act” problem in the PT’s Confidants even extends to several non-PT Confidants, with Yoshida being a notable exception. Iwai and Ohya, IMO, are also exceptions: through them we see that Ren genuinely does not care about toeing the line set by the justice system if it means he does the right thing, and he’s more than happy to talk up the PT’s activities to help them stay alive in the gossip mill. He flirts with lethal consequences if it means he sticks to a code of justice, and through Yoshida he sees how to temper that enough to apply it to changing society in legal ways. Justice isn’t just about rebellion, it’s also about sticking to what’s broken and fixing it from within.

He didn’t learn either of those things from the PT Confidants, which isn’t the PT’s problem. That’s just how they were written. But it’s because they were written that way that I can safely say that the PT’s Confidants did not in any way contribute to a significant change or emotional impact on Ren because of how Ren was positioned within those exchanges. It’s also why I can point to Akechi’s Confidant and say that nothing about it has Ren just be a sounding board for Akechi to say things and get helpful feedback. Their Confidant was written in a specific way to differentiate it from other Confidants. This is deliberate and makes their bond significant from a purely objective standpoint within the story itself. 

When their Confidant started in the TV studio, Akechi even says that he wants to talk to Ren more, that their conversations will be helpful. That’s the “give and take” part of their Confidant: conversations. An equal exchange that does nothing but benefit them as individuals.

To be brief: Ren was spectator in the PT’s Confidant ranks, but with Akechi he was a participant. They had conversations, which is remarkable considering Ren doesn’t actually have a ‘voice’ in the game.

To be even more brief: if the PT’s Confidants were so significant to Ren, then why didn’t Maruki pick them as the bargaining chip to blackmail Ren into staying in the dream world? Maruki picked Akechi for a reason, and it’s because Akechi was the most important thing to Ren compared to anything else.

He’s a bit of a sarcastic asshole, but is surprisingly caring and courageous when the chips are down, as well as when it comes to the beliefs of the youth 

Name: Wakaba Isshiki

Likes: Research, Literature, Psychology

Dislikes: Corruption in the SIU, the Phantom Thieves

Arcana: XIX. The Judgement (Le Judgement)

Service: True Justice

The head prosecutor of the SIU, often stepped on and ignored because of her gender. Wakaba can be incredibly spacy and easily distracted, but has a hot temper that shouldn’t be ignored. She acts as Ann Takamaki’s superior, and is Futaba’s mother. She’s introduced as an enemy to the Phantom Thieves, and had enough distorted desires in relation to the SIU’s treatment of her as more an entertainer than a worker that it formed a funhouse palace overlaid over the courthouse

Note(s): I made this more general with S/O listening to their favorite song just so it's more of a reader insert than being too specific. I did have S/O listening to a song in English though since I think that'd be fun.

Iwai

Kaoru has listened to some songs in English a bit so he's listened to it. And he knows a tiny bit of English thanks to his time in the Yakuza, but that doesn't mean he completely understands what's being said.

He's in another room when he hears your voice. At first, he thinks you're calling out to him, but then he goes to check on you and finds you're singing along to whatever song you're listening to.

Iwai can't help a chuckle at your singing. It's good, but it's also such a cute thing to catch you doing. Might walk by to pat you on the head before going back to whatever he was doing.

Maruki

Doesn't listen to English music that often, but he does enjoy the beat and the singer that you're listening to. Can't help a smile as you're singing along too.

He's not the most knowledgeable when it comes to music, but he does think you're really good at singing. He'll compliment you later because he doesn't want to interrupt and embarrass you or anything.

Probably ends up adding whatever song you're singing to his own playlist. He might not know what the lyrics mean, but the song seems to make you happy and that's good enough for him.

Sae

She knows a good bit of English and has hummed to herself a few times while a song had been playing in the background. So she doesn't mind when you're playing your music. It's different from what she's used to, but she listens to it and likes what she hears.

And then she hears you singing along while she's organizing her files and notes for a new case. Sae can't help a smile at how happy you are and she's glad that you're a good singer.

"Mind turning it down a bit, love?" She'd ask you softly. She's happy that you're happily singing, but she is pretty busy most of the time even when she's at home. She'll ask you to sing to her another time to make up for it.

Yoshida

He's recognized some of the words and lyrics in some of your music before. It's not quite his kind of music, but he does enjoy it and how happy you seem.

He's putting together his own notes one day and he hears your music and your voice in the background. It's a nice comforting noise before he realizes that you aren't talking on a phone, you're singing.

"You sound great, my heart," Yoshida would say and give you a bright smile before going back to his work. Even if you weren't a good singer, he'd still compliment you.

favorite persona arcana list edit challenge

this was just a thing i wanted to do for myself and thought maybe other people would want to do it. the main goal of the challenge is to pick 1 character for each arcana listing that is your favorite and make an edit for them (or you could do a drawing or writing if you wanted, this is pretty loose).
