I am so sick of all these opinionated hot takes and edgy articles slamming “kids these days.”

Gen Z has grown up in a time of perpetual war and terror threats. They have witnessed two recessions, and massive global disasters. They have active shooter drills in school, for fuck’s sake! Their latest formative years have been in a global pandemic with death, social isolation and uncertainty, and they have seen massive political unrest around the world and likely their own country.

They have gone through everything we “adults” have the past 2 decades, all as children. So yeah, maybe they get really into identity exploration, or make silly tiktok dances, or get riled up about causes they are passionate about.

But holy shit, I cannot imagine the stress of having to grow up in this time. The fear and uncertainty and chaos. The isolation and constant upheaval. The unattainable future.

And to see so much media, especially from Gen X and millennials, mocking and demeaning them as soft or dramatic or needy is so incredibly disheartening. Gen Z was born into chaos and are doing anything they can to cope. Children’s hospitals are seeing record mental health crises. Panic disorders and depression are skyrocketing even among young kids. And yet so much of our culture just dismisses the or rolls their eyes. They aren’t weak. They are doing anything they can not to break.

Idk. I just see so little compassion for an entire generation of traumatized people and it breaks my heart a little.
