Please do not be scared off the eclectic mix of notes in this blend. I’m no lover of mint or bubblegum, but this scent is more than the sum of its parts--it’s gorgeous and well worth a try.

He flew down the stairs, eager to find the two at the bar and fulfill his ‘mission’. Well, if there’s anything Taehyung is good at, it’s distracting people. He was regularly sent out to divert people’s attention, and boy was he quite the distraction. With his boxy grin and beautifully sculpted face, it was hard to leave him. He couldn’t wait to see you properly! With all these years of staring at old photographs of you, he couldn’t believe this was his chance to finally talk to you. This, of course, only made him run faster. And it was at this great speed that Taehyung could barely see what was ahead of him and bounded straight into Jungkook.

“Watch where you’re going-“Jungkook started, “What? Why are you looking at me like that for?”

“Did you let her leave?” Tae deadpanned.

“…yeah, but I got her number!” he smirked, walking up the stairs smugly.

Your last 3 days have consisted of three things; sleeping, eating, and texting the bartender. He keeps asking when he’ll see you next and you want to see him too, you really do, but it’s too risky to leave again.

The lights behind you are blaring, good at hiding the blush forming on your cheeks. He leans in, mouth by your ear. He smells quite musky, with a touch of vanilla. It’s so sweet and hypnotizing and God do you love it! With his lips ghosting over your ear, he whispers “do you want me to take you back to your home later? Saves you paying for a taxi, I can drive you?”

You begin to fidget in your seat, squirming at the idea of him taking you home. Not because its him that would take you home - actually you find yourself trusting the bartender more as you continue to speak to him - but rather because what would happen if he did. Would he expect to come into your house? What if they notice he’s there? Would they hurt him? You can’t even get caught coming back in, let alone sneaking in another person! God how long have you been out for?

A small cough interrupts your inner dread, and you notice Jungkook beginning to stand up straight. After you quickly realise that he must have thought you had rejected him, you subconsciously reach out and grab his arm.

“um I’m sorry but I live in a dorm and you see the, um, university is very strict on having strangers on campus and so it’s not-“

“Hey, don’t worry about it, I completely understand!” he says, rather gently “but can I at least have your number?”

Your mind wanders back into reality as you hear footsteps heading towards the kitchen. Immediately your hands move to play with your bracelet, your eyes darting to the door of the kitchen, fingers twisting the metal on your wrist. 3 of the main members of Sin Syndicate enter the kitchen as an uneasy feeling sets in your stomach. You look up expectantly at the men, and they look down back at you. The one member, who’s name you know to be Ju-Won, walks around the table and stands directly behind you; as for the other two, one stands in front of you, on the opposite side of the table, and the other stands at the door. A tingly sensation creeps up over you, as you feel Ju-Won touching and twisting strands of your hair through his fingers. You hide the urge to cringe, as you think about the things those hands have done – the lives they have taken.

“So sweetheart, Yunseo says that you can’t keep scrounging off us anymore. You’re a big girl now, and we can’t keep paying for you, can we? You have to start working for your life now. Ju-Won suggested you could work in one of our brothels, but we don’t want you too tired for us when you come back home, so we have decided you’re going to be working at ‘Angels’. You start tomorrow!” the greasy smile in front of you makes you want to throw up.

As Ju-Won lets go of your hair, and you nod politely at the 3 members (much to your resentment) you head back into your room. It seems really out of place in this big mansion of the Syndicates. The room has a cream colour scheme and is filled by a single-bed and a small chest of drawers. Reaching around your socks in your drawer, you search for the one that hides your phone. The phone springs to life, with the brand logo flashing on the screen when you turn it on. Sitting down on your bed, notifications begin to come through.

Jungkook: Hey, how are you today? [11:34✓✓]

Butterflies arise in your stomach as you lie back onto your bed, smiling to yourself. Your fingers move faster than your brain, and before you know it you have already replied.

You: Hey, I’m alright thank you, I’m actually starting a new job tomorrow! I’m a little nervous about it to be honest, but I’m so glad to be getting out the house more! [13:26✓]

You reread the message you sent and panic. It definitely sounds like you’re being held captive, you think.

You: Yknow, getting out the house more than usual because of college and everything haha! [13:27✓]

You put your phone away in your drawer, feeling calm now that you had saved your little mistake.

“as you know, I’ve been texting Y/N for the past few days, and well...she says she has a job?”

“A job?”

“Yeah. She said she starts tomorrow and she’s nervous. You don’t think-“

A shorter man, but equal in fierceness and determination, interrupts Jungkook’s fretting, ”Well they aren’t going to let her go and work for a legitimate place, that’d be stupid. And as the Syndicates only run drug chains, strip clubs and brothels, then she’s obviously working in one of them.”

Jungkook’s face morphs into one of outrage; almost disgust,” A fucking brothel!? They better not be sending her to work there Yoongi, I swear to God, I’ll fucking torch the lot of them”

Taehyung can’t stop himself for giggling at his younger’s outburst, “Why do you even care!? You hardly know her, and be realistic yeah? She’s probably working for one of their strip clubs to get her started, because it’s not like they’re gonna let her run riot on a drug chain. And sending her straight into a brothel? Unlikely.”

“Tae’s got a point. I’ll try and work out which one they have likely sent her too.” Their leader places his hand on Jungkook’s shoulder comfortingly, and then continues to head to his office.

A bright purple neon sign, declaring the title ‘Angels’ flickers above the bar. The ‘A’ has devil horns above it, completely ridding the name of its suggested innocence. Most of the place looks like it is following an open plan design. Yellow leather chairs meet black shiny counters; tacky turquoise poles stand tall on top of the surface. You are pretty sure, that just in the 2 minutes you have spent here, you have seen every colour existing.

It’s quite busy in here already to say it is only the late afternoon, you think. Men dressed in suits occupy most of the room, but you are surprised to see female clients lurking around. From all the movies you watched, you always gathered it was only men that visited these types of places. Clearly, you were wrong. Your eyes continue to search the place, whilst you are waiting for further instructions from Yunseo. On the opposite side of the room you see a raised platform, with black, leather seats and small, red, circular tables surrounding it. You quickly conclude that this must be the stage where main performances are given. Focusing on that area, you see the a few silver poles coming out of the stage. You gulp, wondering if they are expecting you to be able to pole dance. You could never do that, you muse, you can barely walk in a straight line half the time! As for the employees, they are absolutely stunning. Long hair swaying in sync with their hips, their golden skin hypnotizing every person to watch their every move. You really don’t know how you’re going to fit in here.

As you take a sip of your water, a gentleman joins you at the bar. You can’t help but to take notice of him as he orders himself a drink, engaging in conversation with the Syndicate Bartender.

“You’re new ‘round here, right? I haven’t ever seen you here before?”

“Yeah, a friend recommended me the club, said I should check it out, so here I am” the dark black hair of the gentleman is parted, allowing any lurking eyes a better scope of his handsome face.

Just as you begin to listen to the rest of their conversation, Yunseo taps your shoulder.

“Okay Y/N, you’re going to have to get practicing because I’ve booked you a performance slot ready for Saturday, and you better not disappoint us!”

“Wait? For Saturday? That’s just 3 days away! How am I supposed-“

“You’d watch your mouth if you know what’s good for you sweetheart”

And just like that your head tilts down, hands in lap. Yunseo has always scared you, and has always took advantage of this whenever he has a chance.

“Good girl,” he hums, hand moving to cup your face, “Come with me and I’ll show you where you can practice”

As you get out of your seat to follow Yunseo, through the pungent scent of sweat and arousal, the gentleman at the bar catches your eye once more. It’s the way he is looking at you that you notice the most. With a prominent frown filling his features, he seems to be thinking about something. But you don’t have time to ask him about it or continue to ponder, so you turn back around and walk after Yunseo.

The rest of the evening is filled by your frustration. Yunseo had left you in this room, filled with only a stripper pole, a speaker and leather sofa, and these 4 walls are now driving you insane. It’s not like you’re the worst dancer in the world, it’s just you don’t have enough confidence. Just when you were about to hit play on the music, someone bursts into the room.

“That’s enough for today! Yunseo told me to get you home” a member you recall being named ‘Seojun’ says.

That’s right, you smile to yourself, if Yunseo told him to fetch he’d do it – he’s like a little puppy dog, a follower, and he always has been.

As you exit the room with him, Seojun’s phone starts to ring in his back pocket. As he picks up the call, you can’t help but to watch and listen,

“Hello?......How long did he stay here for?.....I don’t think it’s too strange no…….He could have been telling the truth I guess……bring it up with Yunseo, he’ll know what to do.”

You wonder for a moment who ‘he’ was. But then you remember where you are, and that it literally could have been anyone. Seojun closes the door behind you and leads you out the back entrance to the car.

With bountiful new launches, the turn of the season is a prolific opportunity to identify a favorite new scent, and this spring and summer have been no different (despite all the other uncertainties happening in the world right now). As a lighthearted distraction, I'm sharing 10 of the best new perfumes that have launched in anticipation of summer. As I've been spritzing and testing away the past couple of weeks, the sparkly summer selects below have provided a comforting mood boost, and because I know choosing a new perfume can be incredibly difficult (like finding a needle in a haystack), I'm comparing summer's new class of perfumes with some of the best cult favorites from seasons past. Warnings: minor angst and slight fluff at the end

Word count: 1.75 k words

When you find yourself saying that certain phrase again, you can’t help but mentally reprimand and scowl at yourself as you steal a glance at the clock. Because it was only 8:47 in the morning, and you have already mumbled: “I don’t miss kim namjoon.” to yourself, for the 8th time today.

As if mumbling it to yourself more would somehow, magically brainwash you into thinking that yes, you really don’t miss him when deep down you know you do.

You miss him. You miss him. You miss him.

You miss him when you shouldn’t even be thinking about him at all. “You’re supposed to be mad at him, remember?”, you groaned. ‘Remember that fight last night? Be mad at him! Don’t miss him. Don’t miss his stupid face and stupid dimples.’

Don’t miss him because it’s already been a day and there’s not even a text or missed call. Don’t miss him because he was the one who started that stupid fight. Don’t miss him because he’s not here, when he should be. Don’t miss him just because you shouldn’t.

But even if the continuous ‘you shouldn’t’s and ‘don’t’s, your heart and mind still manages to find a way to navigate towards your kim namjoon.

You shouldn’t miss him. But you do.

You know you miss him when you’re getting ready in the bathroom.

When you accidentally spot his toothbrush lying lazily in your cup from the corner of your eye, uncoincidentally facing away from yours. And that’s when you find yourself frowning at it but before you could even fathom what was going on, your limbs had already taken action and you find yourself already placing your toothbrush far away from his, snickering a ‘Let’s see what a little distance can do to you.’ to it.

But you miss him more 10 minutes in, when you are in the shower, and you unknowingly find yourself using his musky body wash instead of yours. You had initially blew it off as a slip, that you hadn’t meant to use the bottle which was far away from your usual body wash, but despite your initial annoyance at yourself, you eventually crumble and allow yourself to sniff in his scent, pretending just for a second that he is right beside you.

By the time you left the bathroom, you had let out a bitter ‘Stupid kim namjoon’ under your breath, but the way you put your toothbrush back in its place, next to his seems to say otherwise, along with how you whispered ‘he is already so far away from me, let’s make my toothbrush suffer like how i am right now’ to yourself.

You know you miss him when you’re driving because you are reminded of him once again when you find yourself switching off the radio in lightning speed as a more than familiar tune comes on, the exact same tune you were the first listener to, even before Min Suga because the creator himself had wanted your opinion on it first.

You had been seated in your favourite spot in MonStudio: Namjoon’s lap when a pair of headphones had placed on you, along with a peck on the back of your head as he gently whispered a “have a listen to this, love.”

And as the soft melody flooded through your ears and namjoon’s voice drowned you, the way the owner of that voice was leaving you with little kisses and soft squeezes with his arms around you as you listened, doesn’t goes unnoticed.

By the time you were done, there were tears in your eyes and the song had left speechless due to how good it was. It was a soothing melody that you could go to sleep listening to, but whose lyrics spoke so much you’d cry relating to.

“It’s-” you sniffled, “it’s so good I can’t even find words, joon. I’m so so so proud of you… I-I…”

You had wanted to say more, told him about how his song took you down the memory lane, made you miss the people you lost, how it made you nostalgic, how you could listen to it every second of the day. But you couldn’t because of how choked up you were and he understood. He understood how you felt as he chuckled and just hugged you tighter against him, watching as your wiped away your tears.

He understood clearly just by how you pressed your lips against his, and he couldn’t help but mumble “I love you” between his uneven breaths.

Spring Day was your absolute favourite, but right now you had wanted nothing more than to curse at the radio DJ for playing that song on a day like this. Because in the screaming silence that you now sit in, you are once again drowning as namjoon’s voice burns a hole in your heart. ‘I miss you. Saying this makes me miss you more’.

I miss you. Yes, i miss you.

But where are you now, joon- ah?

You know you miss him when you’re in your usual seat in Caffeinated.

It was just like any Saturday, a cup of warm vanilla on your left, the fairy lights of Caffeinated glowing brightly above you, your laptop sitting on the table but the only thing missing was the man who would always sit right in front of you with his cup of americano.

It was a tradition for Joon and you to be in Caffeinated every Saturday, where you would work on your computer while he reads and steals little glances at you. And so, you find yourself staring at your lockscreen for far too long as you are stricken by the urge to either text or call him. But your stubbornness got the best of you and you find yourself just sat there, staring at a picture of kim namjoon with his famous dimpled smile.

And when your hand hovers over the power button, you hesitate. Thoughts of there being a probability of him calling or texting you invading, so you just throw your phone aside, and groan into your hands before continuing on the work in your hands again.

You miss him. You really do.

You know you miss him by the time you’re leaving the cafe.

As you find yourself once again cursing at yourself when you almost end up buying an extra slice of cake and a coffee for namjoon, like you always do on the days he couldn’t make it on your coffee dates. But once the reality of your cold war sinks in, you are upset all over again.

Because he was not here.

Why did you both even fight. What did you even fight about, you can’t remember.

And if asked do you regret it, you’d undoubtedly say yes. A million times yes.

You know you miss him at the end of the day.

When you had whisper “who needs Kim Namjoon?” to yourself as you lied on his side of the bed, dressed only in his sweater and a pair of undies with your laptop playing a v live next to you.

Kim Namjoon’s V live, more specifically.

Which you had initially hesitated to watch when a notification from v app blinked at you at 9:45 p.m., the exact time when you and joon would usually facetime, making you freeze. The initial fear and reluctance of clicking in had faded away the first second you laid your eyes on him, because your breath is taken away as there sits the person you are craving for, kim namjoon, in the flesh, wearing his a black hoodie, talking with armys about a new song while eating takeout in monstudio with tired eyes.

‘He’s been skipping his meals again I see’ you’d commented to yourself and as you continue to scan through him in detail, you had come to notice that he seems distracted, and has been fiddling his rings and sighing too much despite the facade he tries to put on for the fans.

Maybe it’s the way you know him too well, but you could tell that he has putting himself through hell and misses you dearly too, which was confirmed a few minutes later.

“Why am i eating now? Is it supper?” he read from a comment from a fan and chuckled.

“No, this is dinner and...lunch?” he slurps another mouthful of food as he skims through the worried comments piling up. “Don’t worry, guys. I usually eat on time and Im not overworking myself. It’s just that I completely lost track of time today and forgot.”

“I usually have this… reminder, which tells me to take care of myself, and my meals on time but it… it isn’t working today,” He hummed.

“Did you break it oppa? Kekeke” a fan asked and you notice the way his pupils dilate and how he tried to blinked his shocked expression away. He let out a nervous chuckle, “...I really hope I didn’t break it. It means far too much for me.”

The way he rubs his neck nervously doesn’t slip past through your eyes, “I like to think of it just having a vacation day? That time will heal. I really hope it is okay.”

You. You. You.

You knew he was talking about you. You were his reminder, who would always call or text or show up at his studio to check up on him and cheer him on; but due to the fight, the reminders stopped, or in namjoon’s terms, you were having ‘a vacation day’ and you know it’s killing him.

So, why are we doing this to each other, joon ah.

You know you miss him in the middle of the night, at 12:01 a.m..

When he’s by your side, in your bed, letting out ragged breaths, as you both just lay there staring at one another. No words were exchanged in the dark silence but it was those type of silence which meant everything.

He had come in hours after his v live, entering your bed, and arms at once. No questions or answers were needed and the anger and distraught feelings you initially had when you first saw him immediately evaporated when he caged you in his arms and refused to let you go.

Each pat on your head, each ‘i’m sorry. I’m an idiot’, each small peck on your lips, each ‘i missed you’ whisper, each ‘ i love you’, each gentle squeeze he gave reminded that you were now finally home.

I missed you too, joon ah.

NAliday 2018 Impressions

Hello, fren. It's been a quiet year here at Zombiiesque, I've been hit with a bunch of life stuff, so I've mostly been maintaining the LC Archive and that's IT. But....it's the NAliday season. I'm making cookies today, and I got my order in at the beginning of the week. They've had a little time to rest and recover (both Copals had some pretty rough mail shock!), so I wanted to give you some quick impressions. As a bonus, Crystal was included as a gift this round, and although I've been loving it for over a year now, I'll include my thoughts on that as well.

Let's dive right in, shall we?

Eternal Egypt Gold – White Amber, Egyptian Musk, Bastet Amber, Sandalwood Absolute, Lily of the Valley, SL Crimson Absolute, NA Kyphi, Guaiac wood, Lavender, Mandarin, aged Moonstone (Studio Limited) and Eternal Ankh Vanilla Husk and fleck.

Y'ALL. Okay, I've had trouble with Eternal Ankh sitting right on my skin, so I didn't jump on the Eternal Ankh Colors train, but I've been head over heels for Eternal Egypt and all of its variations right from the beginning. It's a desert island scent for me. When I saw they had done an Eternal Egypt Color, I WAS NO MORE GOOD. I knew it was going to come home with me. Looking over the notes, it had to be a sort of white floral version. Wellll, I usually hate florals, but Bastet has slowly been winning me over and since I haven't tried a single Eternal Egypt I haven't liked, bring it on!

I will say that this is probably really going to be incredible after a little aging. Eternal Egypt Decade took a full 6 months before it reached its zenith, honestly, and it's so good I could cry. I bought my 10ml of original Eternal Egypt this year, and it definitely needed a few months before it had that exact smell I was so nuts for. It's hard to describe, but you can definitely tell that it's going to be amazing, but it's not quite there yet.

So when I got Eternal Egypt Gold, I knew it was going to take time, but I couldn't help myself, and I've worn it like three times already. I'm telling you what, if you don't usually like florals, THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND. It smells expensive. It smells sophisticated. It smells like you know down deep something is incredibly sexy, but in the most hidden way...you just KNOW it's there, buried under a pretty smile, this is secretly smoldering with passion. Okay, I'm going a little far with my descriptives, but I think this is one that's flying under the radar when I can't believe it's not sold out.

It's super hard to pick out individual notes already. I don't get the kyphi, and I absolutely love kyphi. Maybe if I huff and huff at my wrist, it's there...but this is NA at the top of their game, it's like you flopped down into a fluffy white couch on the floor and you cannot tear yourself away, you're mesmerized, and you're happy to stay that way. You can smell everything all at once, you know it's there...but it's incredibly well blended, and instead you're presented with such a complete product, you can't help but be spellbound.

I SAID I WASN'T GOING TO DO THAT. Seriously, Niki, shut up and get on with it, already.

Hah. The florals are soft, white, pretty, just hanging out at the edge of that fabulous sandy fresh amber that Eternal Egypt is so famous for. It's elevating and already tranquil, stunning scent to another level. Someone said it reminded them of an expensive mainstream perfume, but yet not. I can understand that - but I'm going to say this. This is what those pretentious, expensive main stream perfumes WANT TO BE BUT THEY CANNOT GET THERE. Pffft. You wish, sister. Okay, I think that's all I've got. But I want y'all to know, this needs to be revisited after a few months, because it's going to change, it's going to develop into something even better than it already is.

Oh! And I noticed, some folks are thinking this is a version of Eternal Ankh - it's most definitely Eternal Egypt.

Vanilla Copal - Peruvian Copal EO, Copal Resin, Crystalline Absolute, Kobalt Absolute, NA Studio Snow Musk (sweet wood-infused musk), Vanilla Bean extract 12.13.18

Okay, so this just sold out today! I had a strong suspicion it would, I'm glad I snatched a bottle up before it got gone.

Okay, this one and its sister took significantly longer to recover from traveling across the country. It was hard for me to sit on my hands and wait, because I was looking forward to the copals - it's my favorite note. I definitely get a couple of different copals here - one is sweeter, and the other's smoky. Both are delightfully resinous, and snake gorgeously around the vanillas. I'm getting the sweetness of the Snow Musk - this is reminding me of Cemetery Musk, but a little chillier? Mama likes! Man. If you just got this, and you think it smells funky, I beg you - PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON IT. Give it a few days, like 4 or 5, and then try it again. It went from funky to absolutely mesmerizing. This feels...cozy. Like wood crackling in a fireplace, sitting wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket and reading while snow is falling outside of your window. The snow creates that quiet, spellbinding atmosphere....hang on, I just read a piece that describes that the other day. Okay, here it is! Anyway, it feels like that - it takes you out of the absolute frenetic energy of the season, it allows you to take a deep breath, and just calm down. What a gift this perfume is. So lovely. I wish I had been able to get a couple bottles of this. What a lovely meld of vanilla, resinous amber, and musk! Don't sleep on this, if you see it in the Marketplace, you might want to snatch a bottle up. I am SO glad I don't have seller's regret on this, hah! But I've been through that with more than one perfume, and I knew it just needed a little time and it would be magical.

Sandalwood Copal – Venezuelan Copal EO, Copal Resin, Sandalwood, Tibetan Sandalwood (future SL), SL Crystal Absolute, Skin Musk, SL N8 Musk and Crimson Musk Absolute

Oh, my goodness. I think that, if possible, I might like this even more than Vanilla Copal! Hummmmm. This is....this is evening, whereas Vanilla Copal is afternoon. This is an evening of quiet and contentment, a mug of tea, the weather is cold, but you've got someone to keep you company and just have some time together to enjoy the season. Yeahhhh. So this has got a few musks, and I can actually pick out the Crimson and Skin Musk....I love NA's musks. They're all somewhat sexy, and I think that's why I'm even more in love with Sandalwood. The two copals, and two sandalwoods, are well blended here, but I can actually smell both and they're really so good together. I love woods, resins, and musks, so this is TOTALLY in my wheelhouse. I might require a backup. This needed aging too, but I actually knew a few days before Vanilla that this was going to blow me away. There's a cleanness in this that keeps this from being too deep in resin territory, and the Crystal is just a whisper here. Do you need both of these? YES. They're quite different, despite the commonality of copal. Unequivocably, yes. Both of them give a lovely sense of contentment and an oasis of peace in a busy, stressful season.

Crystal: Harvested in Egypt with Egyptian Black Vanilla pods, flecks extracted and blended into a beautiful and smooth White Musk. For this perfume, it is about precise binding and timing and we hope you enjoy it as it is one of our customer-favorite single notes.

I've had Crystal for probably about a year. To me, this is slightly chewier vanilla that Crystalline? Crystalline on me is lighter, more airy, a sort of floaty, transparent, gauzy vanilla. My favorite straight up vanilla, but Crystal has grown on me too. It's got more...texture and weight than Crystalline. There's nothing I've worn it with that it hasn't enhanced. It's more of a musky type, not foodie at all. My favorite pairings though are usually with patchouli, particularly Patchouli Ombre and Labyrinth. It's absolutely lovely on its own, and lasts quite a bit longer than Crystalline, which kind of fades after a while and needs to be reapplied, even when it's aged. Not that I'm complaining, I'm happy to slather it on, hah! Also, Crystal has a lot more throw - it's not shy. I've gotten quite a few compliments when wearing it! Especially when I pair it with patchouli, or musks. One of my favorite musks to wear with it is Egyptian Musk. *swoon*

Best in Show: Red Berries (2018)

Cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, red currants, pomegranates, goji berries, lingonberries, rose hips, loganberries, and boysenberries. These are some of the most often employed red berry notes in contemporary perfumery that add a sweet, tangy, even zesty nuance to a fragrance.

Nowadays it seems that this family of fruity notes show up in just about every genre whether its raspberry paired with leather in Tom Ford's bestseller Tuscan Leather or strawberry paired with ambergris in Slumberhouse's Sadanne. This week, Fragrantica's international editors discuss some of their favorite fragrances with red berry notes. We invite you to weigh in as we know this is a vast group of fragrances with many favorites both old and new.

RALPH LAUREN Polo Red

Think "men's cologne" and red berries might not be the first aroma to come to mind. However, over the last three decades as perfumers have become more and more adventurous we've seen a range of fruity nuances make ther way into the genre. For example, Jil Sander's 1989 Feeling Man put raspberry front and center while Tommy Hilfilger's first men's fragrance, 1995's Tommy, featured a prominent cranberry note.

Polo Red, developed by perfumer Olivier Gillotin in 2013, is first and foremost a red berry fragrance - tangy, juicy, and sweet. Whereas original Polo was a smoky pine forest and Polo Blue was the fresh aquatic, Polo Red takes the old theme of a "tangy red" masculine that we saw in Annick Menardo's 1995 masterpiece Givenchy Xeryus Rouge, replayed in scents such as 2008's Paco Rabanne Ultrared Men minus the spice/woods but with the addition of praline and citrus, and lightens it up with a touch of saffron, and a very understated amber-coffee-wood base accord.

This was an immediate love for me, someone who loves all things juicy and tangy. My problem with Polo Red has always been that, like many other modern Ralph Lauren fragrances, the performance leaves much to be desired. Still, linger it does albeit quietly with an almost musky trail for hours. As I typically do with initial launches, I longed for a scent that would be bolder, richer, and with more prominent gourmand nuances (where's the coffee?). A giant 4.2 oz bottle, procured for a mere $25 USD on an auction site, rarely gets used but when it does I marvel at how much I enjoy it...for the 2 hours that I can actually smell it.

GUCCI Eau de Parfum II Gucci

Berries, in all their guises, have entered the realm of "serious" perfumery after they got a boost from the flavours industry and the body products craze for fruity smells during the late 1990s. L'Artisan Parfumeur may have been the pioneer, as far back as 1978, offering a blackberry & musk combo that highlights the natural fruity aspects of the particular type of mud used, but it took years for berries to become the norm for a typically youthful, upbeat, sweetish, happy scent.

Gucci Eau de Parfum II is all of those things, minus the sweet. The composition on paper looks like a middle-of-the-road berries & musk affair, but the distinct advantage lies in balancing the tartness with the sweetness in that blackberry and blackcurrant chord on top. Therefore it provides a welcome freshness, but none of the less desirable traits we associate with man-made essences reserved for yogurts. Without being a natural smelling scent, it surrounds the wearer with an imperceptible aura which dries down to austere cedar, without being heavy at all.

Although its predecessor, Eau de Parfum I, a heavier oriental with select fans, was abruptly discontinued, this one still circulates and proves to be one of the most likeable berry fruit fragrances that even men can borrow. It's great for office wear, for casual wear, for everyday, for when you don't want to be too bothered by your scent, but want to be surrounded by a stealth mantle of clean tartness. Very pretty.

GUCCI Guilty Black Pour Femme

Being on the edge of leaving floral-fruity compositions behind, Gucci Guilty Black was just on time. I remember I liked Gucci Guilty when it first came out; it was inviting and less floral comparing with other releases that year but I didn’t think a flanker would merge more surprises and be more compelling than the original. After a flirty scented blotter had my attention I decided to try it on my skin; they doused my arm generously and I immediately felt the berry effect at the opening, ideally lined with sweet peppery undertones. It was explosive and enthusiastic, bouncing extensive sweet chords, absolutely it’s less floral and slightly lacks the powdery effect of the original; Gucci Black is absolutely all about berries. It’s fleshy, sweet and smoky; while I was expecting something bolder and darker it was tamed with a beautiful and nice berry sillage on my skin! It’s not wild or stained with a dark heavy tint of bold sexiness as expected but it has the right amount of fruitiness to be considered as a mature scent. The red berry, raspberry and vanilla trio reminds me of some remarkable fragrances while it develops; while lilac remains indicating to keep the entire development from being monotonous.

Personally, I love the earthiness of patchouli in a scent's drydown; here it merges beautifully on an amber/musky base while that fruity opining gets more sour and dry; over time it seems more oriental than it actually is. Black is a modern floriental fragrance that might be not very original but it manages to showcase a lot of “berry” sides every moment; every other note is on a supporting role while berries lead the show without a girly/sweet sticky effect that always scares me when berry or red fruits are listed in a composition. It’s absolutely sour, very smoky, moderately sweet and juicy with a sharp masculine twist at the same time. Nothing black about Guilty Black; it’s rather more of glossy red on me!

Aquolina Pink Sugar Simply Pink

Italy’s Aquolina has made itself a household name with the release of Pink Sugar in 2004. It was a sweet, fruity perfume for younger women that clicked with the public and became a runaway success. Some found it to be far too sweet to work as a “serious” perfume, but then came Simply Pink in 2013, which reframed what a sweet, pink-inspired perfume could be. The shift in notes made a dramatic difference. Most of the pure “sugar” notes were pulled back, leaving raspberry, strawberry and almond as the full-bodied center of the fragrance. It’s a delightful exploration of red berries in their juiciest form, fresh and slightly bruised, with just a bit of the fresh juice appearing on the surface. Bergamot and green leaves add just enough bright freshness to give the opening spritzes a big blast. It’s hard to match the exuberance of Simply Pink’s opening.

It’s nine years between 2004-13, and you can feel how Pink Sugar’s audience has grown up. The cotton candy accord of the former has been replaced by white flowers and jasmine. The central accords of Simply Pink are where the perfume gets its most serious. It calms down substantially and becomes more floral, sweeter in a denser, darker path (with notes like licorice root and praline accord.) Some intriguing nuances drift in and out - a satisfyingly bitter citrus appears and disappears, a subtle vanilla skates in the background and a steady stream of red berries, now more sweet like jam cooking, bubbles away with some steam escaping.

The varying temperatures of this scent are intriguing. It is both cool on top (raspberry has an icy, bracing quality,) and dark on the bottom, where jasmine, licorice, sugary praline and strawberry stew away. This stage of the fragrance lasts a respectable number of hours, somewhat linear, but retaining projection. It feels like a wholly natural evolution to see Simply Pink pick up the reigns from where Pink Sugar started its journey. Red berries was a great place to put the focus of this perfume that is “growing up” since berries are on that edge of sweetness and animalic roughness of the forest. This perfume uses them to a delightful end by balancing serious florals and light-hearted sweets to create something that nearly any wearer would find compels them to smile.

Bvlgari Omnia Coral

For years, I avoided any perfume with a mention of red berries, after having my nose recoil in horror numerous times smelling sweet, girly, “happy” fragrances like Aquolina and various Victoria’s Secret editions. I was convinced the whole group was the exact opposite of my taste in perfume. It was Bvlgari’s Omnia Coral that made me give berry perfumes another chance, and the main reason for this was that it lacks the syrupy sweetness of the bulk in berry laden perfumes. At first spritz, Omnia Coral is very fresh, the bergamot standing out, and it has a fizzy quality that I love to start the day with. The freshness has an almost tart feeling to it, in which I recognize the pomegranate and what I guess is the note of Goji berries – the fruit of the shrub Wolfberry, which is an unusual ingredient in fragrance. In the heart, a floral aspect comes through, and I smell mostly the water lily and musk. This stage has a slightly aquatic character, with a bit of a bite to it (I sometimes think of Truth by Calvin Klein at this point), but floral aspects, including a delicate hibiscus nuance, slowly become more and more important. The perfume stays light, never is there a trace of the darker pomegranate we know from for instance Euphoria. Omnia Coral dries down to a warmer, slightly spicy and very woody impression; I get a blend of woodsy notes together with airy sweet musk. Breezy, warm summer days at the shore with some salt in the air is what I’m left with, and I’m loving it."
