listen, i was just scrolling through the undertronic tags for nostalgia and some writing ideas (there was one (1) fic on ao3, yaboi wouldn't be takin that). i didnt actually know there was even anything on there, i had never checked before. and honestly, seeing everything that had been posted onto there was a trainwreck of emotion. it was like scrolling through messages of a group of friend's chat and reminiscing memories, except they're not mine and i was never there. it's such a vivid feeling of absolute belonging to a place i was never present in, yaknow?

and then i saw y'all and couldn't stop thinking about it for days. the carrd caught my eye first because a) bro that's just a straight up sickass carrd holy shit and b) undertronic content?? in the wild?? lets go babey!! and then i looked into it more and just. man, i dont know what emotion it was, probably like all of the above. 'cause holy shit, i didn't know there were more people like me out there!! i thought we were the only system who had undertronic headmates that existed for years!! it didn't even cross my mind that it was possible for more to be out there. so reading through old pluralkit discord screenshots and posted conversations was like looking at something i had always longed for.

you didnt have to hide in those moments. i wanted to reach out and reply and laugh alongside the ghosts of these four year old conversations and say "i get it, i understand this, we've lived it too," because i've never talked with someone who had a chance of returning the sentiment to its full extent. man, it was like lookin in a mirror of what i wanted to see. and i know i'm crazy 'cause again, i wasn't there. you could argue i'm still not 'here', hiding behind signatures and pseudonym accounts.

i got what i came for, though. i have my never-ending nostalgia and a pile of fics to write. i just think that the inspiration doesn't come from the ideas i saw being laid out, but the people who did so and the inherent beauty of learning it the way i did.

every ride is a different memory!!

it all happens so fast he doesn’t even notice the transition’s happened? Like one second he’ll be on one of those Smaller Rollercoasters and when he blinks hes,, in his 11th grade band practice?

OH and it is,,,, MASSIVE. Like if he gets up high on the ferris wheel he can see it stretch on and on for miles.

It’s also so apparent that something is,, Wrong. Nothing too overt - its not like theres Evil Metaphor Monsters chasing him around but,, its got that Weird Liminal Feel?

There’s all these rides, but nobody but him. Its a ghost town. He didn’t think his mind would feel this lonely.

It doesn’t help that it’s always sunset - at first its super fun and calming but eventually it just feels... Bad. He starts jumping at his shadows pretty fast.

The steps to get up to some of the sadder rides feel like they go on forever - like his own subconscious is actively fighting back against letting him access memories that upset him.

Like if he just really, really, really believes that everything okay, it’ll tamp down that Overwhelming Sense Of Dread. ohyeah babey his Forced Positivity is DEEP IN HIS SUBCONSCIOUS TOO SMDNSD

There’s a house of mirrors and he can’t see his own reflection. It constantly shifts into static. he doesn’t stay in there very long.

from what we see,,  her life is very structured, very organized - she’s got all her shit together!! 

She’s got everything she ‘should’ want, but,,, its not actually making her happy? 

She says herself that she feels completely ignored in the position she’s in right now, despite presumably working for years to get where shes at!!

its a castle - a big, bright, luminescent castle, like the ones she dreamed of when she was a kid. Pristine marble and gold, these big fluffy curtains everywhere <3

its beautiful. she hates it.

she feels bad for hating it? She’s built it from the ground up, right? shouldn’t feel so disconnected from what supposed to be the ‘basis of her entire self’, but she does. 

It’s like stepping back from an artwork you’ve spent years on, only to realize you don’t like how it turned out.

TBH it takes her,, a little while to actually find her memories.

She doesn’t like to think of the past a lot - she’s learned its not good to dwell

tucked away in this,, little corner of a small hallway is this giant darkroom with this big pool of Misc Chemicals in the middle.

RED LIGHTS AND ALL, ITS.... VERY CREEPY. 

She used to spent a lot of time in them, developing photos she’d take,,,,,, in this dinky little darkroom her highschool had. kept using it even as she progressed into more professional journalism!!

she supposes its,, pretty apt? It has that same,, disquieting familiarity that thinking of the past does. ,, nostalgia, but icky.

YEP ALL HER MEMORIES ARE PHOTOS!! she’s gotta toss the photo into the chemical pool and have a hop inside. 

It smells like,, peroxide and cleaning chemicals and that alone brings back unpleasant memories but it passes fairly quickly!!

the more recently she’s thought of the memory, the clearer it is!! If she hasn’t thought of it in years, everythings,, super grainy black-and-white with lots of static around the edges of her vision. If its smth she things of regularly, its,, vivid and bright and,, a little overexposed.

It’s a war museum

it reminds him a lot of the ones in his hometown AND FUCK THERE WAS A LOT OF EM SMDNSMDN

there was this,, massive military base, barely a mile out of the town he grew up in - one of those places that are created from a necessity for houses for ppl working there, yk? 

The base came first, a long time ago, and houses were built for the families. As farmers began to set, up it became less of ‘vague habitation’ and more of a town!!

that also meant that,,, smdsnd it was drenched in military influence - extremely patriotic, everyone was military, or knew someone who was military, etc

SO YEAH, WAR MUSEUMS FEEL SUPER FAMILIAR. it has almost a religious sacredness for him.

It isn’t as solid as the others - like it isn’t a Specific Type Of Object associated to memories, they’re all different!!

Medals, paintings, dioramas - theres this,, sleek while hallway with framed surgical equipment, and all his memories of medical operations are there. A lot of stuff his from his point of view, others look like someone hid in a corner and sculpted him out. Touching them puts him into the memory!

He’s alright for,, maybe 1/4. Until he comes upon a memory that,, actually shows him. From an outside/third person perspective.

His face is covered in every single memory of his pre-surgery self. He wanders for nearly an hour, tracing back - his wedding, getting the letter saying he was drafted, nothing.

paintings have this thick, tar-like sludge smeared over sections that have his face. Sculptures are decapitated. 

more recent memories, after the surgery? sure! he can see himself perfectly. Everything before then?

A vague combination of all the places he’s been.

Memories are accessed by finding a key person who was in those memories - as usual, the transition to a memory is done through touch!

his mindscape isn’t,,, upsetting in the traditional way? Like there’s no scary room or weird atmosphere. If anything, it feels too nice. Anybody else would feel completely chill in his subconscious.

It feels wrong specifically for him.

It’s like,,,, when you look at a really old black-and-white photo and you’re like ‘damn, all those people are dead, that feels weird. that’s kinda fucked my guy’

except imagine you got to meet those people - that you saw them, a hundred, two hundred years ago.

Not only that, but you could see inside their heads.

Current thoughts and the way they think them, their favorite things - their family and friends. Every hope and dream they had, everything they wanted to accomplish. Their deepest fears. The things that make up a person. All in the time it would take to glance at them, or brush shoulders on the subway.

of course, you weren’t friends - you hadn’t even talked to them, but you knew them. Everything about them. Maybe better than anybody who did actually talk to them, because you didn’t have the filter of language and unsaid words.

Catholic Guilt x Eyestrain

Just,, this towering, omnipresent cathedral that's been vandalized to all hell? The pews all have these neon stickers and UV lights underneath em? Someone took a giant paintbrush and just dragged it behind them, making streaks of color on the walls? The candles on the walls are replaced with these super bright, colorful flood lights?

The holy water fond has jungle juice in it and that makes him laugh WAY longer than it should have lmao

It's kinda like when you're watching a 3D movie and you take the glasses off and there's that,, Fuzzy Aura that makes your eyes hurt?? Yeah that but its Neon Green-And-Pink and fucking EVERWHERE sdmnsmd

these long, stretching hallways that no matter what will always bring him back to the start. It's super dusty, but the apse is scarily clean.

OH and there's these,, angel statues everywhere around the room - Kinda like the ones you'd see in a cemetery? Their heads are wrapped all the way around with neon tape and glittery chains but he can still hear them whispering.

His memories are depicted in stain-glass windows - stepping through em feels like jumping in a cold lake.

His office. 

I had a few ideas for him, but he's so thoroughly entrenched in Cognito day-in, day-out that I can't imagine it being anything else. 

even HE isn't surprised when he opens his eyes and he's just,, sitting in his office again. just feels like some kind of sick joke. Of course, the thing his mind would conjure is his office, as if his life isn’t already some surreal tragi-comedy smdnsmd.

 it isn't even a case like Reagan's, where he cares about Cognito and WANTS to improve it and WANTS to make it the best it can be LIKE NOPE NOPE /ABSOLUTELY/ NOT

Cognito Inc is a beast that's eaten him from the inside out and filled in the gaps and is now shambling around in the body of what used to be JR Scheimpough. It’s a parasite and he is a host unto it.

OH and his mini golf set is still there though so that's fun :)

When he opens the door, it's an endless void. There's a red rotary phone on his desk with a phone book beside it.

okay here's my dissertation on scream (2022) that nobody asked for but that I nonetheless feel compelled to share <3 under the cut bc I know how pretentious I am god bless

(not spoiler free, read at your own risk, etc)

I think the biggest complaint I have is that like....... it cashes in on nostalgia and love for the original series without even really using it. the trailer was incredibly well made but to the point where it was advertising a different movie than the one that was delivered

bc it looks like it's supposed to be a regular scream movie like we've all come to know and love, albeit it with some newer faces and a perhaps "fresher" plotline, but we still expect it to heavily feature the characters we all know and love like just watching the trailer u EXPECT it to still ultimately be about sidney prescott. I'd say it reads pretty much like it should follow the structure the 4th movie laid out, where there's a new cluster of teens to focus on but it is still ultimately ABOUT sidney. she's still the point of the movie, she's still the main character.

and then instead each of the original characters end up having about ten minutes total screen time and one of them dies. like. how do u kill dewey ????? esp after all their meta talk about needing legacy characters and/or a connection to legacy characters for new characters to be widely accepted into an already well established franchise canon. (and btw they didn't do that well either. the connections were tenuous at best and it felt like they just threw them in and like. never really Used those connections it was just for context)

but anyway that brings me to my next point actually! the meta talk in this installment was so fucking abysmal.

the whole POINT of the meta narrative in the original scream was to make fun of the boring formulaic way that horror movies played out. literally the entire point was to be like "haha how stupid is this." do u think the scene where randy is watching halloween yelling at jamie lee curtis to look behind her while he was at the same time being snuck up on by ghostface was just to be funny?? it was the whole point!! could not have been more in your face!

and even more than that, it broke those well established horror tropes. only virgins left alive?? not in scream 1996 babey!!! in fact having sexual agency is the whole fucking point! (and like as an aside one of the killers in this one makes a weird fucking comment about how "apparently sexual agency is all the rage now" and u could argue that it's supposed to sound stupid bc he's the dipshit killer but all it does is end up sounding like a complete slap in the face to 1996. like actually yes it is all the rage!! that's the point! that's not the trope u should be criticizing kings!!)

and yet what this one does is use the meta narrative as more of a gimmick, all while falling into tropes of its own. and the tropes are different of course, bc it's been 25 years since the first scream movie came out, but those tropes are....... a direct copy of the first scream movie

bc like I've said it time and time again but when scream was made, making fun of all those old tired horror tropes and establishing its own new, fresh narrative, it was successful! and then bc it was successful, people starting taking scream and using it as their new formula. none of those films were as SUCCESSFUL at employing them as scream was mind u, likely bc using the movie that was making fun of tired formulaic movies as your new formula is missing the entire fucking point, but u know. they did it

and so what scream (2022) does is the exact same thing. it uses that same formula while missing the entire fucking point. bc the formula it's using now is "here's how u survive a scream movie. here's the formula that THIS franchise uses," disregarding the fact that the scream franchise didn't really have a formula. there wasn't a set way to survive, even the self proclaimed expert dies eventually (bc hey surprise surprise he was the expert in established horror tropes and this series did not follow those rules <3). the killer wasn't the same each time, they didn't always have the same motive, they didn't always kill the same people for the same reason, it was never THE SAME.

but for some reason 2022 pretends it was?? it's like "it's always someone close to u, usually the boyfriend" meanwhile it was only the boyfriend ONCE and the only people that have used that since have been people trying to capitalize on scream and the fact that it was the first franchise in decades to do something interesting. but then of course in this one it IS the boyfriend, again, bc.... well u know it's like I said they completely missed the point of the meta narrative in the original

idk in the movie itself and at the end towards the credits they made a big show about how this was "for wes" and that they made this movie out of a love for the original but to me it did not feel that way. bc the way they wrote it literally missed the entire point of what wes craven was doing I'm the original franchise

and it's hilarious bc they make such a big deal out of how they're doing this out of a genuine love for 1996 but then the end of the movie completely shits on that perspective. bc the whole motive the bf had was that he loved the stab movies but then as they kept making more they lost sight of what the original movies stood for so he felt he had to stand in as inspiration for a new movie, bc he was mad at the direction the franchise was being taken in.

which is just like. the creative team for 2022 is gonna shit bricks if they ever somehow see this silly little tumblr post bc it's exactly what I'm saying right now. 2022 isn't done in the same spirit as 1996, it doesn't have any of what made the original scream so good. I don't like it precisely bc I loved the original scream so much and this continuation is nothing like the original.

I think they forgot what the original movies were about and I think they were just cashing in on the nostalgia and genuine love people hold for the 1996 film. which is exactly the reason they gave for the villain being the villain at the end of the movie. not liking the direction someone took a beloved franchise in ~just bc it's different~ is what made the bad guy the bad guy. it's what sent the villain off the deep end. writing fanfiction is a gateway to serial murder

and that's me dramatizing it I don't actually think I'm being crucified LMAO but I do think it's an interesting take from a bunch of studio execs who made a movie that went so off the script from the original franchise that this film is ostensibly now a part of. like they knew people were gonna be pissed about it so they wrote that in there as a gotcha like actually if u didn't like this u are in fact the one who is wrong instead <3

also just. dude I know I said it a lot yesterday directly after I came out of the movie but they TOTALLY missed the mark on elevated horror. like there is genuinely a commentary to be made about how horror is not low brow and low budget, and a24 artsy horror is not the only horror that is worth it. there is genuine good criticism to be made about what I call "academy horror," bc it panders to movie critics. and instead they reduced the problem down to "horror that tries to force in social justice issues" as if horror has never been about social justice in its life. as if horror isn't one of the best outlets to talk about those issues in

the sexual agency in scream 1996 is LITERALLY in direct opposition to aids paranoia in the 80s and 90s. that's literally why the "if u have sex u die" trope was so prevalent in that time period. scream 1996 WAS a horror movie that "forced in social justice issues."

elevated horror doesn't CARE about social justice issues, it just cares about looking "smart" bc the critics proved that horror has never been for intellectuals when they forced silence of the lambs to change genres in order to win an oscar.

also jordan peele literally is not part of the elevated horror phenomenon, that little comment from the film could not have been more off base. jordan peele would fucking laugh at u if he heard u say that bc he HAD to market his movie as a comedy to even get it made or into the oscars. and he is a HORROR CREATOR. he absolutely is aware of the plague that elevated horror is on the genre and he would laugh in your face for saying he was elevated horror. it literally could not have been more clear that the people in charge of 2022 had no fucking clue what they were talking about in terms of their meta narrative

wes craven sweetie u would have absolutely bodied the argument against elevated horror and I am so sorry king rest in peace

anyway tl;dr scream is a series about criticizing problems within the genre and smashing outdated tropes to smithereens but 2022 did literally none of that and somehow still manages to pat itself on the back an insanely huge amount during its runtime despite not honoring anything from the original series <3 in fact I would even go so far as to say it actually openly mocked the original which is a bold fucking take but hey! what do I know

Hello friends and welcome to ☆Hateful Nostalgia☆. I was exposed to the mob talker mod WAY too young bc I was an unsupervised child on the internet watching mod showcases and SkyDoesMinecraft. Looking back these sucked, the stories were often bland and the designs were milk toast at best and tits out at worst. So for the sake of procrastinating on working on anything substantial I grabbed the main 6 I remembered and gussied em up. Redesigns, rewrites, better names, all that bullshit. If your interested in better photos, design notes, story details and rambling hit the basement, otherwise here's a line up you should click for better quality.

Also I wrote all this once before already but I deleted it like a dumb bitch. On the night Unus Annus was murdered in front of my eyes no less. Was a rough fuckin night.

The Creeper- Kupa. An explosive pyromaniac with a habit of making empty threats and yelling. She protects what she believes to be her territory with a suicidal passion, but if you manage to get her to cool down and soften up she's pretty sick to hand out with. Hard of hearing, has at least one bout of head trauma at all times, and deathly allergic to cats.

Because the creeper is kinda the og I wanted to reference AT2's design more than the others, but I'm p sure the only thing I actually kept was the red hair and brown gloves. Otherwise I was doing whatever. I really wanted to lean into the explody bit of creepers, so I gave her some bite and dressed her in clothes referenced from Irish railroad workers. This may also be why I keep imaging her with a very heavy Irish or Scottish accent, whichever would be most incomprehensible when angry. Every color but her skin was color picked from one of the references, with some minor alterations for makes my eyes happy reasons.

With Kupa I imagine a story line with her would largely be about her as a character and her development than like an actual adventure narrative like everyone else. She starts off ready to blow up both you and herself in a misguided attempt to defend what she sees as her's and opens up and learns not everyone is out to get her. Lots of time taken to understand her childhood and how she ended up how she is. Very simple, probably the default or tutorial run people would go through.

The Zombie- Bee. The ill husk of a missing explorer suffering from a less than conventional appetite. She wallows in her self imposed loneliness, believing herself to be an irredeemable monster doomed to hurt those around her. What she really needs is a buddy and some clue to who she used to be. Rough voiced, chronically fatigued, and prone to spontaneous combustion in sunlight.

 I definitely consider this one the weakest for design sadly. I imagined Zombies as humans who went into strange caves and caverns and didn't come out for years, only to pop up as completely different people. I just tossed AT2's design. The first thing I did was make her a bit of a genderbent Steve and tinted her green bc Zombies in game are just Steve but green. Tore up her clothes, colored picked the darkest colors I could from the clothes on the in game and boom, Bee. I do vaguely regret not making her eyes pure black but I also still wanted her to be human enough to fit with the other overworld mods.

 Ok so Bee actually has a basic story. When you meet her she's aggressive, but as a warning. She fears the possibility she may hurt somebody so heads for threats immediately. Going back and forth between her cave and village for a while you learn more about the situation with the missing folks who come back and Bee as a person. After a bit you pick her up off her depressed ass and start a nocturnal adventure of refinding your past, adapting to who your becoming, overcoming self destuction, and slow burn babey!!! 

The Skeleton- Ulna. One of the few surviving warriors of a now destroyed kingdom and dead culture. She spends most of her time now traveling alone, hiding in trees and shooting anything see sees as a threat- which is everything- in the face with homemade arrows. Very much suffering from loss of her home and a bad case of lost purpose. A woman of few words, very antisocial, and naturally nocturnal.

 I came in with the Skeleton wanting to make her seem mysterious, so my first thought was immediately a cloak and a mask, but I wanted her face to like be visible so I went with the face paint. I didn't actually know that I wanted to do under there so I went with wraps that are reminiscent of the original outfit but still not tits out bc it's so fucking easy! Gave her a quiver, color picked the cloak and face paint from the in game model and the wraps from AT2'S art. I did like. Subconsciously draw her eyes the way I do Asian characters but I didn't have anything specific in mind so like go nuts with what you think she is.

 Ulna's deal is very much her lack of purpose or home and the entire thing is about finding that again. She's found sitting up in a tree during a storm pointing a bow and arrow into your face. She eventually let's you stick around until the storm is over and theres some bonding into deep night until the rain stops. You ask if she wants to come with on your little travelling sword for hire business, she says sure, sleep schedule shenanigans, backstory angst, and road trip bonding happens and she eventually decides that helping people is her new purpose and you're her new home

The Spider- Park. A young adult experiencing the world for the first time through her tribe's rite of passage. She's really just trying to figure out how to live life outside of the cave she's been stuck in her entire life and aggressively trying to be an independent adult despite not knowing anything about being an independent adult. Its projection. Blind in the daylight, naive and excitable, and taken to refusing help at her own risk.

 Ok so. I don't know who looked at the spider and said "purple haired loli with puffy pants" so I once again yeeted the whole thing, only really keeping the kinda cutesy and childish bits. Spiders are a tribe of humans what live in caves unless they've broken off to live on the surface. Kids are kept inside until they hit a certain milestone, where they come up to explore at night. They're usually small and pale, but are pretty kickass when necessary. Again picked the colors off the in game model, played with the lightest gray for the skin, and bc I couldn't figure out anyway to use the stripes so they're on the patches lol.

 Park's meeting is probably the funniest and most meet cute one here, in that she accidentally drops on top of you from a little cliff drop off. Cue loads of apologies and an explanation about the spider deal and being blind in light. She asks for some help getting around and bam babey friendship and emotional attachment! What follows is kinda a buddy of coming of age story with the obligatory goes home and is miserable scene. Generally it's just about being a scared young adult and having someone to fall back on and why that's important. Also crushes and young people being bad at that.

 The Blaze- Amber. A demonic entity who would let the world burn and the sun die if it meant she'd get her soul back. She's known for being ruthless, taking souls through force instead of making deals like other Blazes. Keeps this forceful nature even once she's become friendly, makes you do dump shit. Territorial, eyes glow and dim with her life, and runs remarkably warm.

 Amber here is the first one I actually did! I was just. Really tired that she was in a bikini. I decided early on I wanted overworld mobs to be human and everyone else was decidedly not, so Blazes are demons who gave up their souls under false pretenses to other Blazes. Because of how little clothes AT2's design wore I had essentially free reign and my thought was immediately to lean on golden knight bc of how Blazes are found protecting fortresses. The gold isn't picked from anything bc I was looser with the colors, but everything else is, and the hair is supposed to represent the smoke. Also the sticks in her hair are blaze rods bc I don't like them just floating around her.

Amber is found in the Nether obviously, protecting a fortress and immediately trying beat your ass and either incinerate you or make you give up your soul. During you prove yourself a p damn good fighter and she makes a deal to show you how Blazes exist and pursade you to give your soul up willingly. Bonding happens and she explains where the souls go and what happened to her. Insert line about how she dug in the sand for her soul until her fingers bleed bc I'm an Arcana freak lol. In general I'd just like her to learn to adapt to who she is now and learning to live life well instead of letting her anger burn her up from the inside out.

 The Enderman- Violet. A confused but sweet young bit of void created by and connected to the Ender Dragon. Her relationship with reality is tenuous at best and abusive at worst, making stable existence rather difficult. She doesn't know a name, age, gender, anything about herself aside from that she likes sweaters. Communicates primarily through psychic connections, docile and sweet, and melts like a witch in water.

 Violet was incredibly easy, so this may be way short. Endermen are decidedly human shaped void from the End with varying sentience. They're direct extensions of the Ender Dragon, and nobody knows how they're made or where they come from, not even they do. Adventurers who escaped The End say they seem scared of it though. Violet in particular is pretty damn new and extraordinary nonconforming, and I tried to show that with her sweater and ponytail. Once again, literally all colors picked. Definitely the simplest but one of my favs.

Violet is the sweetest meet up I think. As your traveling between villages you notice a strange enderman watching you and plant a little flower in front of her. She picks it and you hear a happy little trill come from you and a pretty voice say thank you in your head. Now you have a tall dark teleporting travel buddy! After a little bit of back and forth she tells you in some broken English that the Ender Dragon made her but she doesnt know how, and that it's bad and needs to be killed for the sake of Endermen and that's the new goal. Spoiler they're the corrupted souls of those that died fighting it, with it gone Endermen are free to exist as their own being and do whatever, hurray!
