Of James and Severus; a testament of bullies:

Often in the fandom, it's brought up that James Potter was a bully and Severus Snape was the victim; nowadays it is a popular view. Which I agree and disagree to; so let's have some thoughts about who was the actual bully, who should we forgive and who was the victim! Have it in mind that my sources are books and I don't care about the movies, the fanfictions and the fandom's headcanons! Only book facts.

Here we go:

James Potter:

James Potter was a bully in his teenage years, there is no discussion in that; he often spelled and jinxed other students with no obvious reason whatsoever! We know James Potter was a bully not only from Snape's memory but also from Sirius's confirmation about it. So it's proven to all of us. But we also know that he had grown out of it in his six_seventh year in hogwarts. He then joined the order of phoenix and started fighting Voldemort (the biggest bully of all times). He fought Voldemort three times and he died the fourth time. James Potter died a hero.

These above were facts! Now:

James Potter was never a racist (in the concept of magical world, centaurs, werewolves and merpeople are race) , his friendship with Remus Lupin and his love for Lily Evans shows us that he never had any care for blood status or the nonsenses about werewolves; james potter was never mean toward anyone because who or what they were, he generally was mean, but also he was nice, since most people liked him!

James potter was not evil in any major way; he never tried to kill anyone, torture anyone, unreservedly hurt anyone or things like that.

When the time came and adulthood arrived, he became a responsible man; he never treated people the way he used to and the ones who remember him, remember him as a good man, brave and all.

His hatred for Severus Snape was always there, ever since the first year for two reason: 1) Lily's relationship with Severus; 2) Severus inclination toward dark magic...but are these to good reason to be a bully? No!

But was he a bully toward Severus in particular? My answer is...no! Because we have it as a fact that Severus as well missed no chance to spell or jinx James Potter! Bullying is not a two_sided relationship and if two people of opposite side are doing it, then it's not bullying, it's rivalry.

Have it in mind that I'm not saying james wasn't a bully! I'm saying he wasn't a bully to Severus Snape. Because they did it to eachother.

James potter never bullied again; he grew out of it. He fought for freedom and for people who was born from non-magical families. He did it even if it risked his own family.

James potter died a hero; it doesn't magically erase all the wrong he did, but he also did some good! So...

Severus Snape

Severus snape was also a bully! But from a very different background. He was the only son of a poor family which in he never saw or felt love and loved! He was a part of a racist group in school who all believe in blood supermacy, he himself only considered Lily Potter an exception; but had no qualms considering the rest of muggle-borns, mudbloods! afterwards even though Lily potter was his friend once, he joined Voldemort! The very person whose whole ideal world was based on oppression and murder against muggle-borns and those with impure blood. He then informed Voldemort of a prophecy which directly lead to the death of Lily and James Potter. Afterwards he regretted his actions and joined the order of phoenix, working for them as a spy. He saved harry's life in more than one occasion. And he died a hero.

These all above are facts; now:

Even though the fandom doesn't like to believe, Severus snape was a bully! He was in group of bullies at school who all joined Voldemort afterwards and he himself did the same.

Severus Snape was also a purist and a racist! He believed in blood supremacy untill it came back and bit him in the ass

He was also a very smart person with a brilliant mind, he was one of Voldemort trusted men and believed in the guy to the point that he informed the dark lord about the prophecy the moment he saw a treat to his lord's reign of terror!

He never cared about other people who might have gotten hurt because of his actions, he never cared untill someone he cared about got hurt because of his actions (which was foreseeable considering Lily was muggle-born)

Severus Snape never stopped being a bully. He later continued bullying children who were his students; he bullied Neville Longbottom nonstop and help the other Slytherins such as Malfoy bully the poor kid even further.

He often mocked and humiliate children like Hermione Granger with no regret and he would often side with the other bullies such as Malfoy!

After hearing the prophecy, he knew that Lord Voldemort will pursue the family who were going to be his demise! He knew that the boy in prophecy would be a one-year-old baby; but he informed Voldemort anyway! He didn't care that an innocent child would end up dead!

After realising the child in prophecy was harry potter and not Neville Longbottom, he only asked Voldemort to spare Lily's life (which Voldemort tried to do before trying to kill Harry, he gave Lily a chance to live, she didn't take it) but Severus never cared that how Lily would feel after losing her husband and child!

Severus Snape hatred toward Neville Longbottom was because it could be the Longbottoms and not Potters That were targeted by Voldemort! And that's...fucked up!

Severus Snape later risked his life to protect harry and ultimately kill Voldemort; was it because any higher cause? No! He felt guilty for his part in Lily's death and he wanted revenge against Voldemort.

He worked as a spy for the order, he then became Dumbledore trusted man and then he was killed by Voldemort so Voldemort could gain the ownership of the elder wand

Severus Snape was a bully, never stopped being a bully, never cared for anything out of his own feelings and his own regrets. He died a hero, but does it magically erase all the thing he did? No!

Severus Snape was not a good person, he was a gray character. Yes he was played by Alan Rickman, a very good actor who I loved but just because he was played by a loveable actor, doesn't mean he was good and nice and oh such a sweet innocent baby!

It is a simple matter.

Between a teenage bully who later grew out of it and started fighting for a good cause and teenage bully who later became a part of a terrorist organisation and then became a grown adult who liked to bully children and never actually cared for the life of others; the choice is obvious.

James Potter had always been a better man.

And it is a fact.

Usually, you know something was a hate crime because the perpetrator yelled a racist slogan or told the police he was motivated to attack the victim because of the victim’s race or religion. Sometimes, the attacker’s social-media accounts contain racist writings.

But in this case, according to author Rozina Ali, it was the exact opposite.

With regard to the Oct. 7 pogrom perpetrated by Hamas in southern Israel that killed 1,200 men, women and children, here’s what the “anti-Palestinian” Eaton wrote on X on Nov. 16: “What if someone occupied your country? Wouldn’t you fight them?”

Although Ali quoted only one of Eaton’s posts, there was at least one more in the same vein. This is what Eaton tweeted on Oct. 17 (which was quoted by the Vermont-based news agency Seven Days on Dec. 6): “The notion that Hamas is ‘evil’ for defending their state from occupation is absurd. They are owed a state. Pay up.”

That crashing sound you hear is the shattering of the myth that the Vermont shooting was Islamophobia. No wonder the police have not charged Eaton with a hate crime: his social-media accounts clearly indicate he is a supporter, not a hater, of the Palestinian Arabs. Ali and others have reported that Eaton has a long history of personal problems. That would seem to be what was behind this crime.

But that didn’t fit the narrative that Palestinian advocates prefer. So, as long as that critical information was confined to the local Vermont press, they could keep claiming that the shooting was “anti-Palestinian hate.” Now the jig is up. It has been acknowledged by The New York Times.

This matters because the fight for public opinion regarding Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip revolves around the question of sympathy. In the immediate aftermath of the Oct. 7 mass murders, most of the public’s sympathy was with Israel. But after months of nonstop biased media reporting, some Americans’ sympathies have shifted.

The attention being paid to rising antisemitism creates sympathy for Jews and, by extension, for Israel. Supporters of the Palestinian Arabs want to reduce that sympathy, by claiming that they, too, are the victims of bigotry.

Statistics about hate crimes show that antisemitism is on the rampage, while Islamophobia is minuscule. That reality is bad for the Palestinian cause. So, advocates seize every opportunity to claim that some incident was anti-Arab or anti-Muslim.

Last November, an Ohio man named Hesham Ayyad claimed a driver yelled “Kill all Palestinians!” and “Long live Israel!” at him and then ran him over. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and similar groups yelled “Hate crime!” But security footage showed Ayyad and his brother got into a fistfight on that street corner, which is what caused his injuries. Ayyad has been charged with lying about the incident. CAIR still won’t admit that it was a hoax.

Another part of Icewind Dale that's been fucking grueling so far though... Ngl a part of me is actually fascinated by the historical fantasy worldbuilding done by A Certain Kind Of History Dude who clearly has no idea how history has ever actually worked. The hoops they jump through to convince you that history has never been what might be called "political" is, in its own way, kind of impressive.

Conflict has never been about stuff like colonialism, it's all about nebulous human themes like Tradition. Conflict is about Economy and Economy never involves anything like class or culture. Only trout. The entire machinations of this society revolves ONLY around trout. (I'm now genuinely harping about the trout, it's just really dumb ok.) Conflict is about different groups just being fundamentally different, usually with a clear evil one. Conflict is about all groups being greedy about THEIR FUCKING TROUT because it's just a nebulous human condition to be greedy. Racist also. And poor people are just poor because they aren't ambitious, as a little aside.

It's so...... ashistorical but also deeply uncurious about our own actual real life world right now.

So many "high" fantasy books are like this. The Certain Kind Of History Dudes have too much power in this genre. They get praised for their worldbuilding and it's just the most shallow understanding of how anything works ever.

And more nefarious is the way this seemingly innocent ignorance so quickly and easily justifies stuff like "well, it's totally chill for good guys to kill bad guys... because they're from a bad guy society." Drizzt will tie himself in knots if he has to kill the worst human you can possibly imagine, but swats down random orcs no problem. The way that seemingly creates no cognitive dissonace at all for these writers needs to be studied in a lab. It's all fun and games when we're talking about monsters, but then you think about how that translates into the real world using the exact same mechanisms and that isn't fun at all is it? The ways racist men can tell themselves they are good people follows similar mental gymnastics. Why are "humans" deserving of infinite grace and forgiveness even at their most evil but "orcs" are understood to be inherently a lost cause? Why really? What is that mechanism really? It's been particularly egregious as I'm trying to slog my way through The Crystal Shard because, like, we can generously say that the "barbarians" are based on vikings, but ngl all I'm getting from this dynamic is Salvatore playing "cowboys and indians" but with white people. The general underlying vibes... And maybe that's what I'm trying to get at with what I'm describing in the fantasy races too. If you take off the mask, it all just feels like "cowboys and indians." A trope so deeply embedded in American genre fiction which has always just been incredibly racist this whole time.

These books are such whiplash because unfortunately I do love the characters but boy I wish I could save them from these books sometimes. The Crystal Shard has been soooo much worse than the other books so far imo, so I'm hoping the series chills tf out again generally.

Demon 79

This mini movie / episode was quite nice actually.

Apparently, Demon 79 was originally supposed to be released on a sister series called Red Mirror which would deal with more supernatural things rather than having it all technology based. According to Brooker they might end up doing more Red Mirror episodes depending on the success of this.

Now there’s several nods to horror classics in this entry with the score of the shining being used as the title comes up. We also have the poster for the entry itself which looks like it’s playing on the one for that film along with it’s latter sequel Doctor Sleep. Made to evoke 70′s horrors this entry also tackles themes like race, politics and the incoming apocalypse. Centred around a woman named Nida Huq I couldn’t help think that this might be a reference to Brookers real life wife Connie Huq who has co-wrote several episode of the show in the past.

After the title reveal we come across Nida and can hear bright eyes in the background by Art Garfunkel. This was written for the 1978 movie Watership down and the song itself is about a dreamlike state where someone goes on a journey. This is similar to Nida in the entry and they give a lot of focus to her eyes being wide open at several points.

Now this episode is packed with a number of different easter eggs and ties back to other black mirror episodes from the off and throughout. There’s a shoe brand called Wolfies Footwear which might be building off the back of the last episode Mazey Day. We see the newspaper clipping talking about how a tipley publican named Robert Daly has died. Robert Daly is a name that has appeared in the series before and this was the character that Jesse Plemons played in USS Callister. This is probably director Tobey Haynes giving a bit of a shoutout to himself as he directed not only this but also that episode as well. The talisman used to summon the demon also seems like a thinner version of the white bear symbol which actually appears later on in the flashes of Michael Smarts future.

The fictional UKN broadcaster from the universe announces his Britannia party and we learn that Smart actually took power from Michael Callow from National Anthem. However the flash here shows that he was kicked out for Racist remarks and a clipping in Loch Henry showed that he’d rebuke this. It then announced he’d start a new party which leads to the Britannia one which has the union jack in the white bear symbol. There’s also a shot of facial recognition at an eye level being taken out. This could indicated that the ADIs from hated in the Nation came from Smart and we see that they’re used on a black man showing that they have a racial angle to them. We also end up seeing one of dogs from Metal Head. A news ticker in Loch Henry confirmed that they were introduced by Smart and they of course caused a lot of issues in the country.

It’s funny how Dog is thought to be the titular demon of the episode, when I definitively see it as Smart and hell doesn’t even want him dead because of all the evil he could do. Smart represents the control of the weak minded people who are easily swayed by politicians and he almost somewhat hypnotises Nida’s co-worker into voting for him.

Gaap is also a real life demon from the infernal dictionary who has shape shifting abilities and can show people a past. He states that he’s a misophape which is a lower class demon.

At one point Nida reads the book Creative Visualisation which is about using the power of imagination to create what you want in life.

Turns out that murderers can’t count as people who are killed due to them already being damned and thus she has to go after smart.

Nevertheless the book is a major clue and we have the history with her mother adding to it as well. We know from the other entries that Michael Smart survived and benefits from this attack.

The episode have the similarities to the son of Sam killings which too took place in the 70s. David Berkowitz said that a demon in the form of a dog told him to do it which though he’s admitted was a hoax could be the basis for this episode itself.

The morality behind it is : Is it ok to kill someone when he’s a bad person or when he will do despicable things in the future.

Can someone good and innocent do something terrible and bad for the greater good?

The actors playing the principal roles were perfect, especially the one playing the dancer in Bobby M.

Why 79?

Also the prime minister Michael Smart is finally in this entire episode from present to future.

Some good quotes: “- So don’t just hope for a better future. Vote for one!”

“- Cast out into a boundless, cosmic void. And doomed to spend eternity in a vaccum of infinite nothingness. Absence of matter, of time, of space, light, and sound. I would endure a profound, palpable, and ever-present lack of existence, alone in perpetuity, forever more. - Sound like my life.”

“- My whole life, I never wished harm on anyone. I didn’t. - Uh... You couldn’t have summoned me for my trial if you hadn’t. Well, you had to be corruptible, not beyond corruption. You know what? You must have had some dark force inside you when you touched the talisman. There’s no shame in it.”

“- Then I choose Michael Smart. He’s the one. That’s that. - Honestly, they are not gonna like it. - But it’s within the rules, so they can lump it.”

“- So, I mean, you could come with. - Into eternal oblivion? - Oh no, it’s much worse than that. It’s with me.”

Mists of Pandaria literally took a dwarf character, previously rightfully depicted as a scumbag villain because he wiped out an entire tribe of tauren whilst citing imperialism and racial superiority, and depicted him as a good guy out to protect the pandaren whilst vilifying the tauren for resisting him!

Not to mention that they retconned nearly the entire orc race as evil in that expansion with countless promising orc characters previously depicted as honorable and likable like Zaela, the entire Kor'kron organization, Bloodhilt, ETC becoming Garrosh clones simply because they were orcs and "orcs are inherently bad".

Or that the tie in novels for Mists of Pandaria like Tides of War literally had Baine freaking out and exiling tauren for resisting human and dwarf colonization of their lands.

Vol'jin, one of the only Poc coded monsters to be depicted in a decnet light in MOP, was literally described by the Alliance player as "Disgusting", "savage", and other terms, with the game even adding flies around Vol'jin for this quest.

Before you say thats just the Alliance player's view, white characters never get this description like say human characters when you're playing Horde.

For reference, Shadowlands demonized Dambala, a revered and famous real world loa worshipped in Haiti and many other parts of the World.

The same expansion almost exclusively had PoC coded monsters in the Hell portions, like Zul'jin was in Hell for protecting his lands against colonists that are so proud of their genocide of trolls, their leaders name themselves after it(Trollbanes) the recent Sylvanas novel even clarified that the humans and High Elves knew that it was the Amani's land when they made their homes there from the stone obelisks decorated with troll holy symbols and writing.

It has also been confirmed in recent novels that the tauren gods are fake whilst the night elf gods are real...

And the tauren's oppressor whom had been frequently terrorizing the earth throughout World of Warcraft's history, Magni Bronzebeard, literally got the role of voice of Azeroth like the true Mighty Whitey he is.

Warcraft III for all its racial coding never had anything like this and Warcraft I and II did not have this much racial coding.

So the Doubling down on the racial coding and the "PoC Coded monsters are evil" stuff was done by the modern writers that go "look at how woke we are, two white women are gay an we retconned another white character to be trans, now lets kill some voodoo worshipping savages in the Jungle together!"

Anyhow, sorry I have strong feelings about this as someone whom isn't white myself.

This is sadly a very extensive list and I have no doubt is only part of the problem. I used to play WoW when I was 13 which was 13 years ago and I didn't speak English then so I didn't really know lore. I came back only recently and the few things I played were some BfA (Kul Tiras side), all of Dragonflight and some Legion and a bit of Shadowlands. I haven't touched the other things aside from the vague knowledge of what is going on. I have to keep an eye on these things as I play on because I didn't know most of it.

Hell they do stupid colonialist tropes even with white-coded races, like I am sure the Drust are supposed to be Celtic coded and yet they also have them portrayed as bad for not wanting the Kul Tirans on their land.

I feel like when they do something good for the non-white coded races, it is always played safe for the general playerbase of the cishet white dudes who want their racist stereotypes intact. They always seem to be pussyfooting around the issue without making any meaningful change. They want to make sure they won't offend their biggest racist consumer base and that is so sad. Blizzard has potent racism 10 years behind everyone else.

Also I am sorry you have to write so much, but thank you for sharing this and I hope more people are made aware of it. It's okay to always vent here for anything, and I will eventually catch up with playing the content.

Seven months ago, a House committee advanced a bill to study reparations for slavery, after more than three decades of efforts to build support for the idea.

But the bill has not been taken up for consideration by the full House of Representatives even though it has the backing of some of the country's most prominent Democrats.

"Since April there has been very little movement on the bill by the leadership in Congress," said Kamm Howard, a national co-chair of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America.

Advocates for reparations are frustrated despite the fact that the proposal faces steep odds of fully passing the closely divided Congress even if the House did take it up.

The bill is H.R. 40, and it gets its name from the unmet promise that former slaves would be given "40 acres and a mule" as the Civil War drew to a close. It would establish a 13-person commission to study the effects of slavery and racial discrimination in the United States, from before the country's finding to present day.

The commission would hold hearings, submit its findings to Congress and recommend "appropriate remedies." It would also consider a "national apology" for the harm caused by slavery.

The bill's original sponsor, the late Democratic Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, first proposed the bill in 1989, and did so year after year for nearly three decades, until he retired in 2017. After that, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas began sponsoring the bill.

"I don't think anyone could argue against the fact that the trajectory of slavery has gone through the centuries, the decades and is in the DNA of descendants of enslaved Africans," Jackson Lee, a Democrat, said in an interview with NPR. "America would do well to try to bring healing and repair, in this time and in this century."

The bill finally gained political traction among Democrats as the country grappled with race and systemic racism and protests sparked by the killings of Black Americans by police flowed through the streets of U.S. cities large and small over the last two years.

Republicans oppose reparations. Democrats say even studying them has value

The bill has nearly 200 co-sponsors in the House, including members of House Democratic leadership. But it is widely opposed by Republicans and was advanced by the House Judiciary Committee in April with only Democratic votes.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the Judiciary Committee's top Republican, argued that because the committee's members would be appointed by the president, the House speaker and the Senate pro tempore, who are currently all Democrats, the commission would obviously come to a conclusion in support of reparations.

"Spend $20 million for a commission that's already decided to take money from people who were never involved in the evil of slavery and give it to people who were never subject to the evil of slavery," Jordan said during the hearing on the bill. "That's what Democrats on the Judiciary Committee are doing."

Rep. Burgess Owens of Utah, one of two Black Republicans currently serving in the House, said that the concept of reparations is "divisive."

"Reparation where you take people's money that they've earned — it's punishment, it's theft, it's judgement," he said in the hearing. "It's saying that because of your skin color, you owe me. That is not the American way. We're not racist people. This American country is based on meritocracy."

Jackson Lee says arguments like this miss the point. The bill does not prescribe what form reparations should take, a question that is a point of debate among supporters of reparations for slavery.

"It is not the study of getting a check. It is not giving you a check. It is not the bill on a check," Jackson Lee said. "It is to study slavery and develop reparations proposals, which would create, first of all, the platform for understanding."

Rep. Jamaal Bowman talked about reparations frequently when he campaigned for his New York congressional seat.

"We haven't taken a moment to stop and pause and reflect and look ourselves in the mirror as a country and really be honest with ourselves about how those harms continue to persist," Bowman said.

A group of advocates has been pushing Democrats to bring the bill up for a vote, arguing that it is deeply popular.

"We are working diligently to basically get them all in a room with us and tell us directly how we can move this bill forward," said Nicole Austin-Hillery of Human Rights Watch, one of the advocates calling for a meeting with House leaders. "They have the power to do it, and we're imploring them to do so."

Some argue that House leadership has yet to bring the bill up for a vote because they fear a backlash among voters. Democrats are coming off of a series of bruising off-year elections that featured fresh Republican attacks on race and culture. In next year's midterms, Democrats will be defending incredibly slim majorities.

"The Democratic leaders are saying that they are scared if they move this legislation today, that it will hurt their chances of keeping control of the Congress," said Howard.

Advocates are urging Biden to act without Congress

A senior Democratic aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the status of pending legislation, said that conversations about the legislation are ongoing, and that Democratic leadership and the White House are working together on the path forward. The aide said that equity is a central priority of the party.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a co-sponsor of the bill, told reporters earlier this year that he hopes that President Biden considers establishing a commission similar to the one called for in H.R. 40 using executive authority, noting that the chances of the bill passing the Senate "are pretty dim." In the evenly divided Senate, legislation requires 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. A Senate companion bill, sponsored by Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, has just 22 co-sponsors, with no Republicans.

The idea of Biden establishing a commission on his own has also won the support of some activists, including the Rev. Mark Thompson.

"What sets H.R. 40 apart from all of those other pieces of legislation that 'Manchinema' are blocking, is this" he said — using a compound reference to moderate Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona. "H.R 40 is the only one ... that Biden can sign and enact by executive order."

The White House hasn't said whether Biden would consider creating a commission on his own.

"He supports a number of components of the bill, including the funding and the proposal for a study, which he feels would be the next important step forward and something that he feels would be absolutely correct in addressing ... these moments in history," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in June.

Jackson Lee said she's focused on the legislative process and still hopes to get a "successful result" in the House, but said that there's a "great deal of power in the White House and in the presidency."

"I think there is certainly a sufficient body of people that would give President Biden a standing ovation if that was the direction that we needed to take," she said.

The more I think about Elemental's race allegory, the more I dislike it. It feels very misguided to suggest that racism is akin to people being made of substances that violently react when they touch, injuring or killing one or both parties, because does that not give this film's allegorical racism so much more credibility than real world racism has or could ever have? Within the world of this film, is it not objective fact that mixing the "races" is dangerous to all parties and is merely sometimes "worth it" in exceptional circumstances, when both consent to the inherent danger of existing near each other as these different "races?" Does it not smack of racism to suggest that doing away with segregation is merely the lesser of two evils??

Within the world of Elemental, a world ironically crafted for the sole purpose of conveying a rather hamfisted anti-racism message, segregation is simply logical and results in the most comfort and safety possible for all four "races." Like, yeah, should people made out of fucking fire who drink gasoline maybe not live next door to a guy made of water and a guy made of dry wood? Is having these people live in different communities not a no-brainer for everyone involved? Is it not deeply fucked up to portray metaphorical "races" as literally caustic to each other, eating away at each other's bodies like acid when they "mix?" Is this not the peak of racist rhetoric, to imply that differing races are inherently "incompatible" and cultures are metaphorically "corroded" by mixing?

Segregation in real life is far, far stupider than it is in Elemental because real life races do not hurt each other merely by existing in the same space. In fact, segregation in real life is based on very little actual "reasoning," and none of these reasons hold up to logic. It's just primitive apebrained fear/hatred of those who look/act different from oneself, and flimsy attempts at rationalizing these base, primitive emotions with pseudoscience and puritanical nonsense. True, some people in our world think that cultures are corroded by mixing and some races inherently cause harm to others, but all of this is, verifiably, complete bunk. It's all just a cover for fear of change, the rush of cruel joy one can feel from hating another, the desire to be better than others, all that crap. We all know this song, and it's kind of not the point here. My point is, in real life, racism has no sound logical reasoning. In Elemental, it does. It is given an actual point, a point driven by harm reduction and public safety. Real life racism has absolutely none of that. Thus, the world of Elemental, by its very design, portrays segregation vs race mixing as a discussion with some degree of nuance, and not one that's black and white, as it is in real life. It is saying the racists have, to some degree, a point. And that is bad.

I have not actually seen this film. Notice how I do not bring up the actual plot at any point. The plot, I feel, is kind of irrelevant here. My beef is with the things I have seen, which is the worldbuilding as portrayed in the trailers. Idk, I just don't like the thought of a kid's first exposure to the concept of racism being "it is in the nature of people who are a different race than you to harm you, and you them, so one must be wary around such people for both of your sakes. There's a good reason races are often separated, these rules are in place for your protection, and while sometimes it's worth mixing on occasion if everyone involved consents to the inherent danger, typically one should stay in their lane for the sake of themselves and others. While you should not hate people different from you, you should keep in mind that you're better off apart, in different neighbourhoods and schools and public transportation, and only spend time with such a person if you're both sure it's worth the risk, because if you get too close to each other, you will get hurt."

I don't like the idea that, while we can understand, love, and show compassion to one another, at the end of the day our inborn race is simply incompatible with that of most others at a basic, unchangeable level.

I don't like the implication that segregation is legitimately in the interest of public safety for all races, and that mixing is inherently dangerous.

I don't like Elemental's race allegory.

It's bad. It's certainly not well thought through. It, in it's attempt to simplify the subject matter in a way easily digestible to children, somehow makes this very black-and-white issue far more nuanced than it really is, saying both sides have a point and must be reconciled with one another in balance. It is, quite ironically, kind of racist.

(I'm not assuming ill intent here, btw. I'm sure the writers had the best intentions. I don't think their writing is intentionally racist, I just think it's unintentionally bad.)

"marcielle is a blonde white women who the anime sided with immediately" and not the fact that, ya know, that's her life and those are her fcking team mates. the orcs are literally "racist" to every other species the encounter, even going so far to dehumanize them based on appearances. you decided from oneee comment from marcielle that the orcs didn't start anything either. for all we know, they started the raids in the first place. and orcs have canonically targeted not just elves but humans, half-foots and seemingly any other non-orc species. they would clearly have no problem decimating entire villages to get what they want. oh but in the lord of the rings tolkein based them off of his racist ideals of black people so now the modern concept of race and slavery needs to apply to these orcs characters somehow. the concept of tolkein's being that there are races that are inherently evil and unable to change of break from that. even though that's not the case in dungeon meshi. they portrayed the exact opposite actually. if we go off of your theory that the other races attacked first, making them sympathetic, they're the same as any other race in the series and haven't been shown as inherently evil. and if we go with mine, that they attacked other species first, they still aren't being portrayed as inherently evil! your post is a fucking insane victim mindset take.

Archbishop Rhea/Seiros Propaganda Post

It’s not talked about enough that she is probably the most morally gray character of the game with many of her actions having good intentions, but not going about it in the best way.

She made a lot of difficult choices with no way of knowing the future consequences. Needed more screen time, she only got 1 war crime compared to Edelgard’s 15, she deserved the chance to commit more.

She stabs a man to death in the opening cutscene, sacrifices herself numerous times to save people, and offers weed to students. She has the range.

Listen to me!!! She is the best example of moral ambiguity in the game. Too many people wrongly attribute bad things in game to her and project their religious trauma onto her and make her out to be the bad guy just because of a little catholic aesthetic. I’ve even seen people believe she is homophobic and racist despite the fact that she is bisexual AND has had assassination attempts on her life because she DOESN’T discriminate based on race. To understand her you need backstory.

Rhea is from a race called the Nabateans, the literal children of the goddess known as Sothis. They were more advanced than humans, but decided to share their technology with them anyway. Bad idea if you are familiar with Star Trek’s prime directive. The humans let the power go to their heads and started a devastating war. By the time it ended the whole continent was in such bad shape, Sothis had to use up a majority of her power to heal the land and then went into a healing sleep.

Centuries later, the Nabateans are living peacefully in their own city when the group of people that started the old war (now called Agarthans) convinced a bandit group to help them kill the Nabateans. It was a literal genocide (referred to in-game I believe as the Red Canyon Massacre) with only 9 known survivors of an entire people. It gets worse though. The bandits drank the blood of the slaughtered Nabateans to gain their powers (crests) and tore out their hearts and bones to create weapons. To avenge her family and fight back against the continent wide conquest by Nemesis (lead bandit who killed her mother) Rhea took on a new name (Seiros) and led a resistance effort while pretending to be a human oracle. She won in the end, but that is where the moral ambiguity comes into play.

History is written by the winners, and Rhea chose to lie. Specifically, she changed the origin of Nemesis’ power. She spun it that he didn’t kill the goddess, Sothis gave him her powers to be a holy warrior, but he became evil and betrayed her. In her sadness, Sothis left the mortal world and called upon other holy warriors (Rhea and co.) to defeat him. The crests and “holy” relics (bone weapons) weren’t created from slaughter, they were direct blessings from the goddess. Other bandits who killed her family, actually heroes on her side. Why, you may ask, did she do this? To protect her remaining family. The war had lasted for around 100 years due to the Nabatean blood extending the bandits lifespan and had given them super human powers. They had had kids and even grandkids. The powers were noticeable, significant, and had to have come from somewhere. She could either:

Tell the truth. The bandits killed the goddess and her people, and now the bandits entire family had inherited proof of this horrific act. Pros: the bandits are not seen in a good light and she doesn’t have to be nice to them. Cons: she has put a target on the remaining Nabateans as sources of inhuman power for unsavory people. Also, the bandits descendants suffer for their ancestors crimes. (There is an example of this in game.)

Lie. Crests were blessing, but the goddess left after her gift was abused. Pros: hides Nabateans existence and makes the bandits in her debt for not being seen as evil. Cons: she has to pretend she is not surrounded by the blood of people who took her family from her and are using their bones as weapons. She chose to lie. This eventually led to the development of crest-based importance in society. Those with crests were more highly valued which led to discrimination and favoritism based on it. This is mainly for nobility, commoners didn’t give a shit about it other than “proof you are related to a specific guy”. So some people in the fandom are mad at Rhea for this and think she should have told the truth to prevent magic blood based elitism as if that would have prevented wealth and power based inequality.

Another morally ambiguous action she did was temporarily slow down the the progress of human advancement. She had seen what can happen when humans get a hold of dangerous tech (prime directive!!!) and ALL bans were done to prevent more fighting. Examples:

A printing press. Exist in current canon, but was temporarily banned due to the potential “of mass circulation of misinformation and malevolent rumors”. Guess what happens in game. A character has an “information campaign” to promote a war of imperialism and spread anti-religious and Nabatean sentiments.🙃

Telescope. Specifically because “the ease of locating enemy camps would escalate wartime violence”.

Black oil. Due to “misuse could result in accidental death” and “competition for it could cause strife”. (I am 100% on Rhea’s side for this, fuck fossil fuels)

Note: people try and say that she also banned autopsies, but in-game books only say that a Cardinal wanted them banned with no evidence that Rhea agreed to do it.

Also, another divisive action Rhea took was the attempted resurrection of Sothis (this has two parts). The first was her creation of homunculus. Her process for this was to create an empty body as a shell and then put the goddess’s heart into it and hope she entered into and took over the body. She did not and instead the homunculi all developed their own consciousnesses. Rhea did this 12 times over the course of 1000 years meaning she probably let each one live out a human lifespan and tried again after they died. This one is only really ambiguous because a lot of people incorrectly assumed that she had been kidnapping children and experimenting on them instead of creating the bodies. I try to avoid arguments about whether she should have created the homunculi in the first place, because they kind of start to sound like those arguments about whether women in XYZ situations should be allowed to create life/have children (if that makes sense).

The second part is her attitude and treatment of Byleth (the main character). Byleth was stillborn and Sitri (Byleth’s mom and Rhea’s 12th homunculus) was dying from birth complications. Sitri begged Rhea to remove the goddess’s heart (which brought her to life) and use it to try and save Byleth. Rhea, who saw Sitri as a daughter, agreed to do it. Some players found this unforgivable for experimenting(???) on Byleth and not asking the father(???) for permission. Rhea’s attitude toward Byleth when they grow up is weird writing wise. Some scenes imply that she believes Byleth to be the goddess reincarnated (sort of true) and in other scenes she implies that they are a vessel for Sothis to possess (also sort of true). So that’s another point for ambiguity.

LASTLY (I’m almost done), the scene near the end of the one route where Rhea is an enemy instead of an ally. The player character’s team has almost won, most of the continent has been conquered, and the last remaining of Dimitri and Rhea’s rebel forces are trapped in a fortress city not suitable for sieges. Rhea decides “I am taking you to hell with me :)”, turns into a dragon, unleashes the hidden Nabatean high tech robots, and has the WHOLE city set on fire with civilians implied to still be inside. Big girlboss moment and honestly considering why she is the final boss I don’t blame her for going ape shit.

submitting ganondorf from the legend of zelda franchise, especially the version from tears of the kingdom! ok i know this sounds a bit crazy but hear me out (and also sorry if i get some other character's names wrong, i didn't play the games in english)

so i'm gonna have to get a bit into the worldbuilding of zelda first, specifically ocarina of time where ganondorf has his first real appearance so in hyrule there are several fantasy races, there's the hylians, the sheikah, the gorons, the zora and the gerudo (also in some other games there's the rito. and there's the kokiri/the koroks but they're not relevant to this) the hylians are basically regular humans except they have long pointy ears which is bc they're chosen by the godesses and their ears are for hearing the godesses' voices. they also (only in older games) all have light skin. the royal family of hyrule only consists of hylians. you can probably see where this is going. the sheikah are also human and are only meant to be servants for the royal family and do their dirty work for them. like a whole torture dungeon/mass grave, which was presumably used during the hyrulean civil war that took place about a decade before the start of ocarina of time. the gorons and the zora aren't human and, while they have their own leadership systems, since the end of the civil war they are under the rule of the hyrulean royal family. then there's the gerudo. they are based on middle eastern people and they are all dark skinned. (their fantasy thingy is that they're only women, except for one man who's born every 100 years and becomes their king. that's ganondorf.) they live in the desert and they're the only race who is independant from hyrule, which the hyrulean royal family really doesn't like. also the hylians are just super racist to the gerudo in general.

so ganondorf's motivation starts out as wanting to improve the life of the gerudo, because the conditions in the desert suck. (this is technically only really elaborated on in wind waker, one of oot's sequels. the zelda timeline is an absolute mess which i admit makes discussions like this kinda difficult sometimes.) ganondorf then conquers hyrule but doesn't actually improve anything for the gerudo, he literally just sits in his evil castle and is evil and kills people. and then you defeat him.

as i mentioned, wind waker, a direct sequel to oot in one timeline, really went into depth about his motivations and made him a sympathetic character. but then he also kidnaps little girls to find zelda and is the evil bad guy who you have to kill at the end.

twilight princess is an interesting case bc it takes place after oot in a timeline where link timetraveled back to before the start of oot and told zelda what would happen. so, in the backstory of tp, ganondorf gets executed for crimes that he mostly hasn't even comitted yet (though the execution fails bc plot). the gerudo are nowhere to be seen, it's implied that they have either been driven away or murdered. ganondorf's attempted execution even takes place in gerudo desert. then he attacks hyrule again and you have to kill him bc he's evil.

then skyward sword, as a prequel to the entire series, retroactively retconned ganondorf to be an incarnation of the hatred of demise, the demon king, who is basically just personified evil.

but at least these games mostly agreed that the hyrulean royal family is terrible (except for skyward sword).

then breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom came out. (spoilers ahead for totk) smarter people than me have written stuff about how imperialist the narrative of totk is, but i'll try to summarize.

ganondorf isn't in botw, but the gerudo finally appear again after a long and very suspicicious and. it's bad. i'm not even gonna get into how their writing is so racist (and honestly, worse than their writing in oot which came out in the 90s), bc that would really be its own essay. but to summarize the relevant stuff, they're now allied with hyrule and have really assimilated to hylian culture. they have pointy ears now which ingame there are two myths given for why that's the case: one is that it's bc of interbreeding with hylians, which is not how gerudo genetics work, and the other is that it's bc of their shame of having given birth to ganondorf, which yikes. bc of all of this the gerudo have finally "earned" being portrayed as the good guys.

in totk, most of the story takes place in the past and we see it through zelda's (very biased) memories. and the whole thing is genuinely kinda uncomfortable to watch bc if just feels like propaganda. rauru, the first king of hyrule, comes from a race of basically demigods, called zonai, that are from islands in the sky. he arrived in hyrule and "united" the zora, gorons and rito underneath the kingdom of hyrule. it's really just colonialism honestly. he also keeps trying to pressure the gerudo to join him but they, and ganondorf as their king, refuse (said refusal is narratively portrayed as being super evil for some reason). there's some fights between the gerudo (where the gerudo seem to very willingly go along with ganondorf) and the hylians, and rauru easily wins by using powerful magical artifacts that function as weapons and that he and queen sonia literally wear as jewelry. eventually, ganondorf swears alliance to the kingdom of hyrule, just to later betray them and murder queen sonia. then he becomes some kind of demon god. one sage of each race, including a gerudo, get recruited by rauru to fight against ganondorf and they get magical artifacts but only after they swear alliance to rauru and hyrule. (we never find out how the rest of the gerudo in this time feel about any of this, whether they're still loyal to ganondorf or if they agree with the sage.) in the present day, the gerudo are completely allied with hyrule. the old gerudo sage holds a lecture to the new gerudo sage (who is btw a teenager) on how much the gerudo need to be ashamed of ganondorf having been a gerudo. also, underneath the gerudo desert, there are 2 zonai mines, which implies that the reason rauru wanted the gerudo under his rule was so he could get their resources. another place where there's a zonai mine is underneath kakariko village, which is where the sheikah live, who are basically the royal family's servants. through the entire game the hylian royal family is portrayed as being absolutely unquestionably good (even though their actions are the absolute opposite), meanwhile ganondorf is portrayed the most unsympathetically he's ever been.

totk especially is just so bad about this. the previous games are still kinda copaganda but they're still a little bit better which just makes totk even more frustrating.

Okay I have to say it. I have to say it because it passes my mind every single time I see anything remotely related to Baldur's Gate 3.

So there's the first quest, right? There's an idyllic druid glen and you have to rescue the head druid Halsin because the vice head druid is racist against tieflings. And he got captured by goblins so you go to the goblin camp in the ancient ruins, where the goblins are all completely and utterly unsympathetic. And that's racial essentialist horsefeathers but it's a DnD game and you can't rely on Wizards to actually commit to being less racist rather than just saying they will. We knew what we were getting into when we bought the game.

And then you find the head druid and he's stuck in bear form and getting tormented by three kids and their babysitter, and to free him you have to murder every single goblin in the room?? Including the children??? Who are not combatants?????? You can go out of your way to not kill the children, which makes the fight harder because they inevitably call more goblins who can actually fight, but then the noble and progressive head druid you came to save will just murder the children himself.

I'm not trying to turn this into 'every person who's fantasized about a Shadowheart/Astarion three-way thinks goblin children deserve to die'. Disco Elysium is one of my favorite games and I love talking about Tequila Sunset and Kim, the World's Most Perfect Man, but also Measurehead exists and I hate him and everything about his writing. But also I bring up Measurehead more than I normally would when I talk about Disco Elysium because the weird way his race is handled in the game compels me, and no one does that with the goblin children murder? It's not an obscure part that no one sees. Rescuing Halsim is one of the easier routes in the first major story quest, he can become a recruitable companion, and the first I heard about the game was 'hey, there's a druid companion and you can bang them while they're turned into a bear'. The game pointedly glosses over the fact that you murdered three children for the crime of being jerks to an animal, and I guess that means the playerbase did too? Even I had to do a double-take because I initially assumed that I screwed up the encounter and that the correct way would have let the goblin children live (and probably give me an easier fight to boot). But no, unless you're handling the quest in some really unintuitive way (maybe you can knock them out?????), you gotta kill the kids to get the bear sex.

I guess some players just agree that there's nothing wrong with killing children as long as they're goblins and categorically evil. But I feel like the overlap between that kind of DnD player and the kind I occasionally see posting shipping art of BG3 isn't that large. Hopefully.

And it bugs the hell out of me because the biggest game of the year, based on one of the most popular TRPGs of all time, just goes 'yeah, we're going to put child murder in one of the good routes to complete this quest, but it's fine because they're the wrong race and they're kind of dicks' and it's not news. Wizards has spent years trying to do a soft rollback on all the racial essentialism in its worldbuilding, up to and including retroactively making a type of good drow so they can get off the hook about making an entire race of dark-skinned fantasy creatures evil. Sure, Wizards cares about fixing the obsession DnD has about race performatively half the time, but it does try. And now Wizards knows that it doesn't even need to care performatively anymore. If the product's good enough and the racism is subtle enough, it just goes forgotten.

I don't even, like. Need this to be universally condemned by the fanbase. But at least talked about more? I'd have preferred it if I knew about the goblin children murder *before* I bought the game and played enough of it that Steam won't refund me.

I doubt that CAIR will acknowledge the truth about the Vermont shooting, either. Extremists are reluctant to ever admit that they were wrong about anything. But reasonable people can no longer deny the reality of Jason Eaton’s pro-Hamas posts.

So I have a guy that I was arguing with, where he claimed that the drama surrounding the Cleopatra "Docuseries" is based out of Anti-Blackness. Rather than what it's really about which is erasure.

Cleopatra from almost every reputable historian, and almost all drawings, statues, etc of here depict her as light skinned or white. The reason people are upset, and more specifically a large number of Egyptians and Greeks, is because they view this as them being erased. Because even if Cleopatra was white, she was still an important person in Egyptian history. And they have respect for her.

What is going on is not "Anti-Blackness", that's a fucking scapegoat. And the reason I know it is, is because in part THIS BULLSHIT RIGHT HERE! (And yes I'm livid talking about this because I'm a red head)

"No such thing as black washing" this person claims. Yeah sure ok. And here's another thing too. This same person said that white people can't experience racism. Only racial prejudice. No even your own definition does not agree with you unless you have a white supremacist view of the world. Which would mean you believe that white people are all powerful, so much so that they never lack power ever. Which is INSANE as a concept idea to me. Like really, WTF.

And let me be clear. The person that posited that you "can't be racist towards white people" put forward that the reason is because despite the definition of racism already been defined, they wanted to negate and expand it so that the only minority that can't be racist towards anyone are Black. It gets worse though. Consider the definition they are using. If you don't think whites as all powerful then you don't agree with your own ideas on the matter. Because it would mean that white people in predominantly non white countries COULD in fact have racism pointed against them. And it would also mean that you could not be racist against those white people as they lack power, or privilege.

Another real-life issue that I would create my community to aid is against the U.S. Foster System. The system is filled with children who are in need of homes and lack mental health care, basic necessities, medical care, and support. In my Earthseed community I would shelter against homeless children who are in need of homes who seek drugs and alcohol due to the system failing them. My community would enable a safe place for everyone in need of a home, a meal, and basic necessities while enabling a fresh start or a new beginning to all with the help of one another.

Quote two (2) Earthseed verses from Parable of the Sower and show how you will apply them to your community. You may be creative in your interpretation.

“ Kindness eases Change” (Chapter 15)

This verse from Parable of the Sower will be applicable to my Earthseed community because acts of kindness are more powerful than money and enable real change. I would reform a social system that upholds kindness, protection, and safety to help one another as a family. This would leave behind all forms of capitalism, profiting, and competing behind, and would help my community see that with kindness the possibility of a new life is possible.

“Embrace diversity, unite or be divided, robbed, ruled, killed by those who see you as prey. Embrace diversity or be destroyed.” (Chapter 17)

This verse will be applicable to my Earthseed community as it will be a community that embraces all diverse backgrounds and is free of all discrimination, capitalism, and hierarchies. We will embody a community that is united and grows together without leaving one behind. We will enforce the idea that together we are strong and together we achieve real change without hurting one another. My Earthseed community will be welcoming to every race, color, gender, and sexuality and be liberated of all evil.

Explain WHERE you will create your Earthseed community to be safe.

I will create my Earthseed community to be safe within the Santa Clara de Asis Mission due to its terrible history of colonization and forcing religion to the indigenous people and robbing them of their land. I will regain this land to honor the indigenous blood that once lived there. I will harness and keep this land safe and help shelter my people through different means of protection without letting anything happen to the sacred space we are in.

Who can join your community and why? Who can’t join? Why not?

Anyone can join my community as long as they're open minded, kind, and open to grow as a community. I refuse to let anyone who wants to be the sole leader of the community join, since I will instill the idea of partnership and union without one leader or one person having all the power. I will follow communist ideas and let the people decide for their own needs and decisions. Anyone who is racist, elitist, colorist, sexist, ableist, or homophobic will be dismissed and not let in the community. Those who follow White Supremacy ideologies will not be welcomed. I will open my doors to those who follow ideas of collectivism and kinship. I will give priority to anyone from historically marginalized communities who are homeless and lack basic necessities.

What will your leadership model be for your community?

My leadership model for my community will be based on community and helping one another grow. I want to focus on intellectual growth and having an open mind to different ideas and beliefs. I want everyone to be an active role model for the community and serve one another to the best of our abilities. I want everyone to understand what quality life is and ensure that we all live comfortably and safely without any leaders, power positions, or capitalism in place.

Create a FUTURE TECHNOLOGY (one on the horizon, not something like teleportation or time travel) to help improve life at your Earthseed community.

For my Earthseed community, I would create a future technology focused on renewable solar energy. I would place solar panels all over the mission that will convert sunlight into electricity, which can then be used to power the homes within the mission along with heating and cooling systems. In addition, in cooler months I would use renewable wind energy to generate electricity. Finally, I would create a filter system within my community to filter drinkable water solely for us to bathe, drink, and use for our crops. With these technologies I will ensure that we are living in a more sustainable way by helping the environment around us.

Explain/show how your Earthseed community will SURVIVE.

My Earthseed community will survive by having a river nearby providing us with fresh water, finding ways to provide free food for all community members through farming and crop sharing, all while instilling values of community and sharing. Finally, to keep the community safe I will implement a safe security network that will alternate shifts throughout the day ensuring that everyone is safe. We will have no money, therefore, everyone will learn how to trade and help each other by sharing skills and knowledge that they possess.

Explain/show what TWO steps your Earthseed community will make to build a better future, i.e. education, housing, conservation, farming, etc.

One step to my Earthseed community that will help to build a better future is having a school for children and adults to help their intellectual growth. These schools will also teach community members on how to farm to keep one another in touch with our roots and so everyone can take an active role within the community. Finally, I will create safe spaces that allow for resources to help the communities mental and physical health as this will be a priority to ensure that everyone is getting the help and medical care they need. All of these resources will be free of cost and will make sure that everyone is given the care and treatment that they need without having to worry about the financial burden of medical bills.
