on tonight’s episode of zukka living in my head rent free: a comic strip where zuko has promised all of the gaang an adventure with the blue spirit if they come in disguise as well. they each appear to him in their outfits on different days before the adventure.
*katara appears in her black ‘the southern raiders ep’ outfit* zuko to himself as he holds his blue spirit mask in adorable readiness: wow she’s kind of scary…
*toph appears as melon lord*
zuko: wut why is she even scarier
*aang appears as grandpa pipinpadaloxicopolis the third* zuko: arghh! *hits his face*
sokka: okay, i’m ready to go! *appears in kyoshi warrior fit* zuko: (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄@⁄ ⁄) he’s pretty…

Have any zukka au tidbits you wanna gush about?
ABSOLUTELY!! (most of this post will be hidden under the keep reading option this was way longer then i intended lol)
first au ive been thinking a lot about lately is the Zuko Sun spirit AU. this au can be so beautifully tragic and it can end on a good note, a bad note, or a bittersweet note, depending on which way you approach it! zuko can join the gaang early or join up with them in the canon timeline. anyways, in my version toph asks why zuko has these crazy golden eyes that everyone else seems to talks about, and zuko explains this long story about how he was born sick and was blessed with the sun spirit and how it affected his eyes, yada yada yada. meanwhile, sokka, katara, and aang are looking at him with a mixture of shock, grief, and horror in their expression, with sokka visibly being the most affected by this story. both toph and zuko are visibly confused as to why the rest of the gaang is suddenly acting this way, but they don't know the story of yue. (may or may not be making a mini comic related to this titled "havent we heard this story before" hehe).
after this katara, aang, and sokka act crazy protective of zuko, sokka specifically. you think sokka already had 'sacrificial' tendencies? well that was just increased tenfold. this irritates and confuses zuko more but they just refuse to tell him why for a multitude of reasons (not wanting to freak him out, worrying that the same thing that happened to yue will happen to zuko if they tell him etc etc).
my OTHER aus that I love is just blue spirit zuko and kyoshi warrior sokka. anything involving these two I just adore, it's so much fun and there's so much comedic potential in this. my other favorite version is a season 1 version where sokka starts working with zuko while disguised as a kyoshi warrior.
zuko doesn't recognize kyoshi warrior sokka at all (it's like the clark kent with his glasses except sokka puts on the hothead red eyeshadow lmao) and sokka manages to convince him that he's here to help him catch aang. the kicker is he purposefully gives zuko false information on the avatars whereabouts so zuko is just traveling all around the world with false info looking for the avatar while sokka and the rest kick back and enjoy the show lmao. the major downside of this is zuko grows to consider sokka as a friend, and as sokka learns more and more about him and how tragic his story is he finds himself feeling a bit guilty with purposefully leading zuko on a wild goose chase, but knowing he has to do it to protect his sister and aang. he feels very conflicted.
any au that discusses sokka working with zuko an as engineer, an ambassador, senior advisor etc etc. bonus points if the au really focuses in on sokka's traumas and chronic pain involving his leg and his journey on healing, finding self worth and possibly finding love wink wink!

Clothing design for the comic Seal-Shark Jerky, which I'll be working on for the next week or so.
For the written story: Seal-Shark Jerky (Zukka).
Though I think Sokka's design won't be changed, I'm pretty sure I'll erase Zuko's beard, maybe give him a white lotus in exchange somewhere. And also, I forgot to give them some scars. I even thoguht some backstories for some of the scars I planned to give zuko smh.
Normally Zuko would be wearing the Blue Spirit mask, but since I won't change it's design, I didn't drew it this time.
If you have any suggestions, don't be shy! Even if you see this late and I've already finished Seal-Shark Jerky, there is always the next artwork!
Zuko's Arrival (Skipable, but I'll be sad :c).
Seal-Shark Jerky, Part 1/2.
Interlude (Skipable).
Seal-Shark Jerky, Part 2/2.

I remember reading somewhere that we communicate nonverbally far more than we do verbally. (I think verbal is like 7% of our communication? Wow!) So, naturally, I projected my fascination with that onto my current fixation on Zukka. Zuko and Sokka canonically struggle a bit with social interaction, but in opposite ways. Their relationship, I imagine, would consist of them frequently helping each other navigate social gatherings. Personally, I struggle more on the Sokka side of things-- becoming too passionate and loud about certain subjects. I tried to make their reactions healthy, because I’ve learned to recognize the difference between being told to shut up and being told to step back, take a breath, and regain perspective. Similarly, I know the importance of smiling at others, and what kind of a difference in your confidence it can make when someone smiles back.
Anywho! I created some rough comics surrounding this idea that were going to be a Thing but then I spent waaaaay too long on the panels above.
The sketches and the ID are below the cut! (Honestly, I like how these sketches turned out better than the main comic I made. Sighhh.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I originally pictured Zukka’s nonverbal communication to be very sweet, but then I started thinking about how they would definitely also have wacky interactions that would help them escape the occasional and nearly inescapable boredom of their jobs. I  also don’t know how Sokka communicated “mochi” with only a look. I just know that it happened. (I had so much fun with Zuko’s expressions! My favorite is the heckin’ sweet one)
[ID: A digital comic. Zuko and Sokka, who are both visibly older, sit at a table along with two earth kingdom dignitaries. They are in the fire nation palace, in a vast room with two pillars, raised steps, and doors leading to outside behind them. Everything is highly decorated and in golds and crimsons. The table has several scrolls and cups on it. Zuko’s place is very neat, whereas Sokka’s papers are scattered and crumpled. Zuko frowns and looks at an earth kingdom dignitary with glasses. The dignitary is visibly nervous. He says, “So, anyway, Firelord Zuko, um... I think-- er... um... uh...” Sokka looks benignly at Zuko.
The next page shows Sokka’s hand on Zuko’s arm. Blue letters read, “Hey.” Then, a close up of Zuko’s scarred eye, looking at Sokka. Sokka then smiles. Blue words say, “smile!” next to Sokka’s head. Zuko looks down, smiling slightly. Yellow words say, “Oh. Right.” Zuko smiles at the dignitary, who smiles back gratefully and thinks, “Oh, he’s smiling. Thank the Spirits.” Zuko rests his hand on Sokka’s. Yellow words say, “thank you,” and blue ones say, “of course.”
Another page shows Sokka yelling across the table at a fire nation dignitary. Zuko looks at Sokka. Then, he rests his hand on Sokka’s arm. Yellow words say, “Sokka. Take a breath.” An ellipses comes from Sokka. He brings his hand toward Zuko’s, and blue words say, “I know.” Sokka breathes in, then out. He then says, “Anyway, this is an issue I feel very strongly about, and it’s necessary we take the proper precautions...” Sokka bites his cheek and looks at Zuko. Blue words say, “I wasn’t done, y’know.” Zuko smiles, and yellow words say, “I know. You can tell me later.”
On the fourth page, a fire nation noble sits. He is looking very nasty and mean. There is a close up of his eyes, which look in Zuko’s direction. Zuko, in a side profile, startles slightly in recognition. Sokka looks on. Under the table, Sokka holds Zuko’s hand, which is shaking. Yellow words and blue words surround the hand. The yellow ones say, “SOKKA. That man- he was there. At the war meeting. On that day. I can’t do this... Sokka... why is he here... I can’t I can’t I can’t.” The blue words say, “Yes, you can... I’m here... Just 30 more minutes... You’re safe.”
The first sketch page shows a rough drawing on a pillared- room. There is a blue and red blob that represent Sokka and Zuko, respectively. They recognize each other. Zuko looks pointedly at Sokka. Red words say, “Hey. Let’s ditch this party and go feed turtleducks.” Sokka smiles conspiratorially, shows a bag of something tucked into his belt, and points a thumb backward. Blue letters say, “one step ahead of you. I already got the bread crumbs. Let’s bounce, babe.” Zuko has stars in his eyes. Big words say, “HECKIN’ SWEET.” There are stars behind him, too.
The second sketch shows Zuko and Sokka both dying of boredom in their chairs. Sokka gets an idea. He looks at Zuko excitedly, and blue letters say, “Zuko Zuko Zuko, let’s have mochi later. Zuko wrinkles his nose and red letters say, “I don’t like mochi. You know this.” Sokka frowns and looks at Zuko. Blue letters say, “Don’t make me do it.” Zuko frowns back and red letters say, “DON’T YOU DARE.” Sokka makes a puppydog face. Blue letters say, *dares*.” Zuko silently screams and red letters say, “NO, MY WEAKNESS.” Zuko lifts a hand to shield himself from Sokka’s cute attack. Red letters say, “No No Not again.” Zuko looks forward, then at Sokka, then completely away, then he looks fully at Sokka. Red letters say, “OK.” Then, an “AHEM,” sounds from somewhere off the panel. Sokka and Zuko, who are holding hands and facing one another, are startled. They both grimace and look at each other. Purple letters say, “oops.” End ID]

okay u guys have been so patient w me putting together the rest of asylum so here is a snippet of a silly romcom zukka au i’m massaging my brain w. it’s called how to catch a blue spirit in 10 days (homage to how to lose a guy in 10 days, obvs)
Sokka is distantly aware, as he slams open Suki’s chamber doors and throws himself to the marble floor, that he might get killed with a fan, but it would be worth it, because this is unbearable and he needs her advice right now. “Suki,” he moans.
“Sokka.” She emerges from her bathchamber and pokes him with her foot. “How goes the forlorn love from afar?”
He rolls onto his back. “I might die, Sooks. I know it sounds crazy, but— I honestly don’t know how I can leave without telling him how I feel. Because then he wouldn’t understand why, and—”
“Wait, what?” Suki sits down next to him fast and leans over him. “Sokka.” Her eyes are green and big. “You’re leaving? I thought you were staying! To hang out with us!”
Sokka raises himself up on his elbows. “I don’t see how I can stay! It’s so painful, Suki.”
“Just tell him how you feel!”
He flops back to the floor with a regretful smack of his head and groans. “He doesn’t wanna hear it, Suki. He’s all anti-courting and anti-romance—”
“He’s not—”
“And he doesn’t like me, anyways.”
“You guys are so stupid.”
“I know.”
“Look, just… be up-front with him. Tell him about how long you’ve been crushing on him. Tell him why you like him. Everything you’ve been telling me: he’s hot, he’s nice, he’s a good person, he makes you laugh, your dad likes him— then tell him uh, you know, you just needed him to know.”
“But I’ll look like a fool. And it’ll be disobeying his ultimatum!”
“No,” Suki counters, “no one gets to take him on a date until they’ve captured the Blue Spirit, but believe me, a lot of people are still flirting with him and sending him love notes.”
the title came from the romcom, but this was mostly inspired by this iconic tumblr comic

I looooove your zukka rec lists! I recently became Avatar-obsessed, never got a chance to watch it as a kid and only just got through it all! I was wondering if you'd consider doing a specifically angst rec list? I love fluffy zukka everything, but sometimes you just gotta have your heart ripped out of your chest and put back in after being thoroughly blended.
thank you! i relate heavily to “recently became Avatar-obsessed” haha. as for the angst list, i sure can try! warning: all of these have happy endings because im a crybaby who can’t read unhappy endings. also, p much all of the fics in the completed section were featured on my other lists but this is specifically the ANGSTY ones >:^)
angsty zukka wips
first, most obviously, feels like we only go backwards by @oldpotatoe
-currently at 102k with 19/27 chapters posted; rated teen
-the amnesia fic. the amnesia fic. the amnesia fic. you know. i haven’t actually read it yet because, as previously mentioned, i’m a crybaby and am waiting for it to finish up but, from my understanding, this fic will murder you in a dark alleyway with no remorse. if u like zukka angst, you’ve probably already read this, but just in case!
An injury leaves Sokka with amnesia. His last memory is of the failed invasion, of leaving his father behind in enemy territory on the Day of Black Sun. Of hopelessness. Rage. // But then he wakes up, and the war is over. Suddenly, he must come to terms with the fact that years have passed, and that he's somehow the Southern Water Tribe Ambassador to the Fire Nation. He is also supposedly friends with banished-Prince-turned-Fire-Lord Zuko, of all people. Close friends.
Yeah, nah.
and i’ll do anything you say (if you say it with your hands) by @goldrushzukka
-currently 38k with 6/8 chapters posted; rated mature
-holy shit. holy SHIT. modern au based on the “my cat likes my fuckbuddy and i am falling in love” trope(?). maybe it’s just because of how the last chapter ended, but oh my god. this one made me cry. made me want to commit violence. when it’s not angsty as hell, it’s pretty funny, but holy shit. ao3 user nebulastucky please.
It’s supposed to be a one night stand. Pick up some guy at a bar, barely remember his name and never learn anything real about him, send him packing in the morning with a thanks for the ride and a cup of coffee to-go. That’s how it’s supposed to go. // But then it’s the best sex Sokka has ever had, and he thinks he’ll hate himself if he never gets to have it again.
Violet Blossoms and Celestial Objects by @hollypunkers
-currently 15k with 2/? posted. rated teen.
-this is the sequel to blue (an angsty, zukka rewrite of book 2-- go read it if u havent!)! !! this is a book 3 rewrite. only two chapters in and mrs hollypunkers is really abusing the miscommunication tag, as zukka writers seem to enjoy doing. im excited to see how the world and story develops with the changes to the story! you should be too!! its very good! obviously spoilers for blue lmao
Having sided with the Avatar in Ba Sing Se, Zuko not only must navigate his new relationship with Sokka but returning to the Fire Nation as a banished enemy. His own journey of self discovery and personal growth must now coexist alongside the personal struggles of every other member of the Gaang as together they blaze a treacherous path toward an unsure victory against Zuko's own father and nation.
breakable heaven by @fruitysokka
-currently 71k with 9/11 chapters posted. rated teen
-swt ambassador zuko! soon to be chief sokka! fake dating ur best friend to get out of an arranged marriage! what could go wrong!!! i also haven’t read this one ((see: i’m a crybaby who is being hurt by too many zukka wips already)), but it has been hanging out in my marked for later for months. from what i understand, this fic has: angst.
With his twenty-first birthday looming just around the corner, the Southern Water Tribe Elders have decided that Sokka, next in line to be Chief, needs to get married. Sokka does not want that, but he does need to get them off his back until he can figure his way out of it. What better way to do that than to pretend to date his best friend (and newly minted Ambassador to the Southern Water Tribe) Zuko? // Seriously, this is a foolproof plan. Maybe one of Sokka's best. Absolutely nothing can go wrong.
angsty zukka fics (completed!)
(i’ll put these in wc order)
lighthouse beam by @incorrectzukka
-7k, rated g
-a modern college au!! zuko’s inner-monologue is very angsty in this fic. typical zuko. also per usual, theyre both fucking dorks. they sort themselves out in the end, but not before The Angst. zuko is semi-deaf in this fic and also he has a bit of internalized homophobia.
Sokka’s breathtakingly beautiful and he’s smart and makes other people laugh. Zuko has a half-burnt face and a deaf ear. It’s not rocket science. // Or, Zuko falls in love with the boy in his Philosophy class.
This Isn’t My Idea of Fun by @khaleeseas
-9k, explicit
-moon spirit/nwt prince!sokka, no war to be found here! admittedly this isnt THAT angsty but like. the angst IS present. zuko is still the prince. a lovely childhood friends (though they hated each other for a minute haha) to lovers story.
If you asked Zuko, he and Azula saw far too much of Chief Hakoda of the Northern Water Tribe’s children growing up. It wasn’t until they were older, and Azula pointed out that - duh - their families were trying to set them all up, that he realized why. // He was told by his mother to be polite. These people were their friends and allies, and though their nations were as different as they came, harmony between nations was the most important thing. // It wasn’t his fault the Chief’s children were so annoying.
put your lips close to mine (as long as they don’t touch) by @celestialceci
-9k, teen
-modern au! zuko and sokka are college roommates. zuko goes to spend the summer with sokka. again,, not really that angsty but-- its there!! the detail and feeling of Home in this story make me happy. zuko is insecure as hell here too. if ur into that.
Zuko hates his home. He likes college alright, but he likes Sokka even better, his assigned roommate turned best friend. Spending the summer with Sokka will be fun, a welcome change of pace he desperately wants. It probably won't awaken anything in him... right?
the thing about dancing by anodymalion
-9k, teen
-yes. this one right here officer. it makes my heart ache. also trans sokka! which is cool. but the zuko angst in this one. hurts me. not so much relationship angst as it is zuko learning he deserves happiness angst. i’m sure u know The Type.
The first time a attendant spills Zuko’s tea and doesn’t immediately fall to her knees, begging the Fire Lord’s forgiveness, it is not anger but a resounding warmth that fills his chest.
i could (never) give you peace by @zukkababey
-10k, mature
-OUCH. OUCH OUCH OUCH. boys please learn to communicate im begging u. also zuko.. zuko, dude. as the tags of the fic say, hes “really going through it” in this one. YOUCH. post-canon.
Zuko almost said it. He almost said the words I think I’m in love with you, but he choked them back down at the last second. // Zuko would never be able to be what Sokka wanted. They might have needed each other during the summer, when two boys with too much weight on their shoulders found comfort in each other in the only way they knew how. // But now Zuko was Fire Lord, and Sokka was leaving.
this love burns so yellow (becoming orange and in its time, exploding) by @meliebee
-18k, teen, major character death
-i lied. THIS is the one, officer. found family.. good mai and zuko and toph friendships.. . ozai escapes prison and tries to overthrow zuko. OBVIOUSLY angst ensues. poor boy. he Does heal in this but it gets worse before it gets better. angst angst angst angst.
Ten months after Zuko is crowned at seventeen, he faces his first coup.
Anything for You by beersforqueers
-23k, explicit
-istg. this is probably one of my favorite zukka fics. its PAINFUL. modern au where theyre broken up but sokka hasnt told his family yet so zuko goes home with him for kataang wedding. a bit smutty, but the plot oh my god ohgm y fuvk. made me cry the first time i read it. (see: crybaby!me) insert that one picture of the horse with the caption PAIN.
In which Sokka and Zuko have broken up but Sokka hasn't told his family yet. So when Katara and Aang's wedding weekend rolls around and he doesn't want to break Gran-Gran's heart, he asks Zuko to pretend to be his boyfriend for one last weekend. // Things don't go as planned.
Moving Mountains by @thefangirlingdead
-64k, mature
-so. when i read this the first time it was in one sitting. soulmate au set within canon era / the comics, to an extent. soulmates can hear each others thoughts. i will happily say this is slowburn, jesus christ. champagne without the cham.
Soulmates are chosen by the spirits and can hear each other’s thoughts. Sokka thinks it’s cheesy and dumb. Zuko thinks it’s poetic justice that he doesn’t have one because he doesn’t deserve it. Cruel irony is finding out that the prince of the Fire Nation (and the person currently hunting you) is your soulmate.
In the Soft Light by @voidcenturyscholar and @romancedawning
-83k, teen, graphic depictions of violence
-moon spirit!sokka living in the northern water tribe. zuko is sent to the northern water tribe as a cultural liaison. iroh is the fire lord but while he is away taking care of lu ten after his injury ozai steps up. i cannot express how many emotions this fic made me feel. background yuetara. i would almost say found family?? but. anyway. plenty of angst to spare here with a healthy dose of enemies to friends to lovers.
As the newly appointed cultural liaison to Northern Water Tribe, Zuko is the first Fire Nation Citizen to step foot inside the city's walls in nearly a century. He's determined to prove himself—to the Fire Lord and to his father—even if the Water Tribe's spirit-touched prince seems to want nothing to do with him.
That Midnight Sky by @zukkababey
-103k, teen
-now now now. tms... modern college au where sokka agrees to tutor zuko in physics because zuko has to maintain straight a’s and physics is just not doing it for him. so. thats cool but THEN azula moves in, randomly, with zuko. to hide the fact that sokka is tutoring zuko, they fake date! what could go wrong!! the mutual pining in here combined with the angst... wonderful, tasty. everyone read it rn. also SLOWBURN
In Zuko’s strict family, needing a tutor is just about the worst thing you could do. Failing a class, however, is even worse. The only rational solution? Take up Aang on his offer to find him a physics tutor and have Sokka—beautiful, smart, handsome Sokka—tutor him in secret. // When Azula’s arrival threatens to reveal Zuko’s secret, it’s up to Sokka to convince her this definitely isn’t what it looks like. See, he’s actually… Zuko’s… boyfriend? // Hmm. There’s no way this could get complicated, right?

anyway no one asked but: yue joins the gaang instead of becoming the moon at the end of season 1 hcs!!
- instead of giving up her life to replace tui as the moon spirit, she gives up tui’s blessing to give them the final burst of strength to escape from zhao. basically yue gives up her blue eyes, pale hair, and waterbending. she never (?) waterbends on the show, and the loss of her bending isn’t too devestating to her.
- also sokka gets a friend who can’t bend either... he deserves it.
- when the gaang leaves after the battle is over, yue decides to come with them and it’s a HUGE thing with her father and begins her main character arc, which is about whether her responsibility to her tribe and the preservation of their culture is more important than her paving her own way and also how those two things can coexist!
- she leaves her betrothal necklace on her bedside table and the last shot of the episode is just of it, lying there.
- this got rly long so there’s more under the cut
- her traveling clothes are a thing shawl and a tunic similar to sokka’s with pants. she keeps her usual haircut but it’s tied with leather instead of the fancy hair things she used as princess. also she uses a hunting knife as a weapon
- she and sokka continue their weird not-dating-but-kind-of-dating dance for a lot of episodes and it’s generally awkward and easy comic relief. also more shots of yue blushing because she’s just so cuteeee
- there’s a scene of them stargazing where yue tells sokka the story of a pair of lovers who died and then remained best friends in all their future lives (because avatar friendships enduring through lifetimes and also friendship being just as important as romantic relationships)
- yue becomes friends with EVERYONE they meet IMMEDIATELY and everyone falls in love with her because she’s sweet and pretty and has a nice laugh.
- there’s a filler episode that’s just sokka and yue going shopping together and trying on lots of jewlery but the running gag is that yue keeps getting distracted with talking to other people and definitely flirting with every girl she runs into and sokka is always distracted with a pair of earrings or a set of rings and doesn’t notice. finally some random guy is like ‘man your girlfriend has been flirting with my sister this whole time... are you aware.” and sokka is immeditaly like ShE’s NoT mY GiRLfRiEnD and then like wait what
- so maybe yue is a lesbian. sokka is very distressed that he’s been trying to court someone who’s not interested so he talks with katara while she’s sewing or something and he’s like is yue gay?? and katara is like oh i don’t know. lots of people we know are queer. sokka: WHO??? katara: well, zuko. suki. sokka: ZUKO??? SUKI??? and this is when katara realizes her brother’s gaydar is nonexistent.
- yue tries being a vegetarian (to be nice to aang) but thinks nuts are gross so she and sokka go on hunting trips together. she’s Very Good at archery.
- also the episode where they watch toph wrestle?? she and sokka are SO on her side. it made me angry in the show that sokka wasn’t on her side but yue would convince him very quickly and they are very loud together.
- she also stays to talk to toph on the estate because she doesn’t look as suspect as the rest of the gaang so the guards don’t kick her out immediately (read: she’s good at conforming to elitist ideas of how people r meant to act and passes the rich kid test). she and toph sit in the garden and watch the moon (because the moon symbolizes yue’s perceived failure to sacrifice herself to save her tribe) and talk about how sometimes to live as yourself you have to skirt your responsibilities to your family. yue leaves a few hours later firmly friends with toph.
- she continues to be the one firmly on toph’s side in the toph/katara disputes that are in the first few episodes with toph. katara can’t hold it against her though because literally who could hold a grudge against yue she’s so incredible
- (ok we’re skipping a lot of time here bc i frankly do not remember everything that happened in book 2) her ba sing se tale is her uhhh going to the market to buy herself an iced tea because she’s gay and just having a good time being a no one. a girl she runs into at the cafe asks her to go on a walk around the city with her and it’s very sweet but yue does Not know this is a date so when the girl gives her a kiss she gets blushy and says something dumb
- also at the end of another episode we have a short scene of yue on the roof of their house in the upper ring, staring at the moon and touching the place on her neck where her betrothal necklace isn’t. then the camera switches to zuko, on the other side of the city, looking at the same moon and absently running his fingers through his hair where his topknot used to be
- yue and jet hate each other but yue still advocates for him because she sees how he’s been hurt and thinks that he deserves a second chance. i don’t know the funeral traditions for any of the nations but she does a quick northern water tribe blessing over his body before they run away.
- yue and mai are like.. yes we r gay..... yes we do flirt with each other while fighting sometimes.... yes we r the two knife fighters.. yes we are ALSO narrative foils
- yue looks SO GOOD in fire nation clothes but she keeps her usual hairdo because she deserves it. the fire nation propaganda makes her very angry, as does the institutionalized homophobia. she starts arguing with some guy over it and katara is ready to back her up and start fucking screaming and get arrested and sokka is like.. now. now is when i should talk to her.
- he drags her away and she’s like fuck dude i can fight my own battles and he’s like no i just.. what you were talking about.... i have something i need to tell you..... and she’s like you’re bi!! good for you, sokka, thank you for telling me. and he’s like :bi shock: no?? you’re a lesbian. anyway yes she is a lesbian they are wlw mlm solidarity.
- there’s a filler episode where toph and yue rob a bunch of fire nation soldiers and when they get caught (after a While of these robberies) they get out of it by playing the ‘dumb rich kids’ card and run away with jewelry like.. dripping off their hands. katara makes them sell all of it except a choker necklace yue keeps that looks like a betrothal necklace but instead has an etching of a bird flying away.
- skipping again bc this is getting rly long. when zuko joins the gaang he and yue have a tentative conversation about their relationships to their nations and he’s like.. idk sounds like you needed to leave? that wasn’t an environment that you can thrive in. and she’s like but i can change it! i need to be there to change it, and i left. and he’s like well no. some things are just toxic. i went back to my nation and it was terrible. and she’s like i have a responsibility to my PEOPLE and gets mad at him and she and katara r like angry at zuko team.
- yue’s life changing field trip with zuko is just them leaving on appa to go to a market and be normal teenagers. they both viewed each other as Fire Prince and Water Tribe Princess, but this lets them open up and realize concretely that that’s not all that they are.
- zuko apologizes for implying that the nwt was irreparable and explains that the fire palace wasn’t something he could fix and that trying just hurt him more. yue says that part of the reason she was angry with him was because he was right and that she felt so much more herself when she was away from her home. they finally reach the conclusion together that they have to become themselves before they can hope to change their cultures for the better.
- yue comes along to boiling rock but is v much background to zukka bromance. she hangs out with suki some (lots more yue blushing oc bc suki is BUFF) and does some dumb gay fighting with mai but they’re both bad at it because yue is busy mooning over suki and mai is busy protecting ty lee.
- ember island players still say she turned into the moon >:(

What are your favourite zukka fics that you would rec (love your twilight au btw)
HELLO i’ve been waiting all day to be done with work/able to get on my computer to answer this so i’m going to just. try my best and i’m definitely going to miss some but here are SOME of my absolute favorites
(do you take this jerk to be) your one and only
Under the leadership of Fire Lord Iroh, the Fire Nation has made every attempt to restore peace and make amends for the harm they inflicted during the Seventy-Year War. Their newest proposal is a literal proposal: a marriage to unite the Fire Nation and the Water Tribes.
The Fire Nation offers Prince Zuko’s hand.
The Water Tribes offer Princess Yue’s.
Sokka is apparently the only person in the world who has a problem with any of this.
Blue
Iroh insists they create a new life and identity in Ba Sing Se. Zuko wants nothing more than to bide his time until his next opportunity to return home, until he realizes ‘Lee’ can get away with things Zuko never could. Zuko dons the mantle of the Blue Spirit again only to lose his focus when the Avatar comes to the city. This time, however, his attention is drawn to the annoying Southern Tribe warrior.
Mass Times Acceleration
[Zuko calls at three in the morning and says, tears in his voice and rage through his teeth, “I want to run away.”
It’s Sokka’s turn to carry the brain cell in his household but he doesn’t waste a second before he’s saying, “Tell me when and where—I’m coming too.”]
Or,
A road trip AU featuring two teenage disasters, abusing Ozai’s credit card, and A Lot Of Sea Lions.
it’s the illusion of separation
Sokka takes a job washing dishes at the new tea shop in town. It's a great gig, until he finds out his only coworker is his old high school bully. Sokka really should quit, but he also really needs to afford rent.
Also, Zuko is kind of hot now.
Those Who Favor Fire
After a failed attempt on his life, Sokka fakes his death, dons a disguise, and infiltrates the would-be assassin's ranks in an attempt to bring them down from the inside.
Zuko learns of his husband's tragic death, mourns, and vows revenge.
The Road Between Action and Inaction
Sokka does a shitty k turn in the parking lot across from the bus station, pulls up to the curb where the boy is looking determinedly at his phone, and rolls down the passenger window. “Hey! Which way were you going?” He may die, but at least his conscience will be clear.
The guy blinks at him.
“Don’t.”
Oh, he’s prickly.
---
Or: the hitchhiker au, featuring Sokka and Zuko falling in love without even realizing it.
Protective
What Zuko wasn’t prepared for was something else, something far more animalistic. Every time he saw that necklace, he felt something clawing at the pit of his stomach: a sensation that was somewhere between “protective” and “possessive.” Although logically he knew it wasn’t true, the thought always appeared before Zuko could stop it: Sokka belongs to me.
Or, Azula kidnaps Sokka. That doesn't sit very well with Zuko or Katara.
(let me be) there for you
Sokka pulls out a clean piece of parchment and starts to write:
Reasons Why Sokka Would Be A Great Bodyguard for Lord Zuko
He smiles in satisfaction at the title. Seeing it in writing only makes him feel more confident in this brilliant, two-minute-old idea of his. Zuko is one of his closest friends, and Sokka is a great fighter, he would be the perfect bodyguard! He has the entirety of his trip in the Fire Nation to prove it to Zuko. This is going to be a piece of cake.
(or, Sokka mistakes his crush for just a strong desire to be a guard for Zuko, and Suki is amused)
Moving Mountains
Soulmates are chosen by the spirits and can hear each other’s thoughts. Sokka thinks it’s cheesy and dumb. Zuko thinks it’s poetic justice that he doesn’t have one because he doesn’t deserve it. Cruel irony is finding out that the prince of the Fire Nation (and the person currently hunting you) is your soulmate.
(Set during and after the events of ATLA, and during some of the events of the comics that follow. This was an excuse to write a slow-burn where Sokka and Zuko are soulmates)
Question Marks
Zuko pulls away first. He stares at Sokka and raises his one brow. “You do realise,” he says dryly, “that you just instigated a major international incident?”
Or: Sokka is impulsive. This is a problem. Especially when he ends up kissing the Fire Lord and immediately running away.
sirens & sleepless nights
Life can be pretty hard living in a city under a totalitarian regime. Between adhering to the ridiculous curfew, keeping himself from being gunned down by a passing patrolman, and paying his unnecessary tolls to the state for, say, breathing, Sokka has his hands full just getting to work. Add aiding a resistance group on top of that, and Sokka should really be getting paid for this.
Then, one night, Sokka finds an injured patrolman collapsed in the street, who tells him with blood on his lips, “If the patrol finds me, I’m dead.”

lmfao @maderilien had given me some numbers from the 'asks for fanfic writers' game, but naturally since i'm bad at tumblr i accidentally deleted the message so i will answer here:
maderilien gave: 5, 7, 9, & 34!!
5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?
lol i may have only written 4 fics within the past ~6 months, but i have two!
heat waves (sangcheng) - bc i feel like i was able to really inject the feeling of orange into it, which was the entire goal!
hold me like you do, cover me in blue (zukka) - naturally tbh lol bc it was my goal to write it as tender as possible w realistic dialogue between the two, and it seems like i was able to actually do that!! uwu
(hands, knees, please, tangerine is a p good runner up, but for no other reason than the fact that i was sitting on this fic premise for over ten years, and finally FINALLY got to finish it lmaooooooo)
7. What element of writing do you struggle with most?
i think.....action scenes? bc i have little experience writing them beyond for a few marvel fics (which is a little daunting, since the ba sing se fic is going to have some of them lmao)
9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write?
LAN WANGJI
“but kath you haven’t even written any wangxian fics!” EXACTLY. RELATIVELY STOIC CHARACTERS ARE HARD LOL bc i always go hard for the comic relief characters!!!
34. Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of.
(lmfao i’m gonna cheat again and put a few down, bc i’m admittedly proud of how i write emotions and dialogue sometimes)
from hold me like you do, cover me in blue -
A skin graft hadn’t been needed; he boarded his ship with still weeping skin, a desecrated scalp, and resolutely dry eyes.
- - -
“It’s not fair,” Sokka murmurs, “that you got to hear mine, and I can’t hear yours.”
from don't go wasting your emotion -
"[...] Of course—” Suddenly, Wei Wuxian straightens, and he affixes a serene smile to his face as he looks over at Huaisang from underneath his lashes. His laugh is convincingly soft, but his grin is a touch too sharp when he lets out a happy sigh.
Huaisang just barely restrains a snort.
from ba sing se wip -
“what’s your favorite color?” sokka asks then. for some reason, his heart thumps a little faster as he looks at the blue spirit’s profile.
they think for a moment, mask turned down to the paper and the nub absently rolling through their fingers, before they finally respond.
orange.
“huh,” sokka says, “i’m pretty sure the only other person i know who likes orange is aang. why orange?”
this time, the blue spirit answers much faster. ginseng.
“like the tea?” sokka quirks an eyebrow. “so that’s your favorite kind?”
no.
from izumi-centric wip that idk when i'll ever develop a plot for lol -
uncle would say that zuko has always been able to identify the tipping points in his path, before he brazenly stepped over them. this feels like one of those moments.
he keeps smoothing his hand over his daughter's hair, but doesn't look down, and instead stares until the red patterns swirl in front of his eyes.
"i heard you," he whispers.
izumi falls asleep, and zuko falls apart.

Zukka Prompt: Zuko was not banished, Sokka was also gifted with the moon spirit’s blessing and he is a waterbender but not that powerful, the most he could do is make (terrifying) Ice needles and heal. Zuko and Zhao was ordered to invade the NWT and capture the princess but they mistake Sokka for Yue. Drama ensues.
Thanks for this prompt! I love it, I can definitely see myself writing the whole damn thing at 3am because I have no self control
For now, a snippet! Ft. Angsty Zuko and Sokka treating kidnapping as a holiday because life in the NWT is boring as hell
Sokka had been kidnapped. Which, yeah, wasn’t great, but it was pretty much the most fun he’d had in years. People had gone on and on about how safe (read: boring) the Northern Water Tribe was, but here he was in the prison hold of a Fire Navy ship. He wasn’t going to waste the opportunity to drive some Fire Nation soldiers crazy.
“Look, I’m really honoured you think I look like a princess, but-“
“Should we gag him?” One is the guards outside his cell asked, completely ignoring Sokka’s words.
“It’s been twenty minutes, he’s gotta shut up soon.” The other sighed.
“Sorry fellas, I don’t see myself stopping any time soon.”
He’d heard the Fire Nation was uptight, but it was comically easy to get under their skin.
“We could knock him out?”
“I think we need permission to do that.”
“Well I’m not going to Zhao!”
“Come on, I’ll give you my cookie at dinner!”
“What about the kid?”
“The freaking Prince of the Fire Nation? I heard he yelled at Yeku until he cried.”
“Yeku cried because he saw a cute hawk once, it’s not hard.”
“Then you go talk to him!”
“No way! He’s an imperial firebender! I like my eyebrows attached!”
“The guy with the swords?” Sokka asked, because that was the only person he’d seen among the crew who looked young enough to be called a kid. And he was really young, about Sokka’s age, and at least half a head shorter than any of the men he’d yelled orders to.
“Yeah, that’s the little nightmare,” one of the guards sighed, before his partner elbowed him in the ribs.
“Don’t talk to him, you’ll encourage him!”
“Hey, I just wanted clarification,” Sokka said, holding his hands up placatingly (even though they were both pointedly not looking at him), “and I can’t say I don’t appreciate cool swords.”
“They are pretty cool swords,” the first guard admitted.
“Yeah, but he’s a firebender!” The other hissed, almost conspiratorially.
Sokka stared blankly. “And?”
The two guards fully turned around to look at him. “He’s a bender,” the guard (who had a truly feeble attempt at a moustache on his upper lip) repeated, like that meant anything.
“Um, and?”
“He uses swords!” Exclaimed Moustache, like Sokka was the one being dense here.
“Yeah, we established that. And?”
Moustache scoffed. “Water Tribes really are uncultured,” he muttered, and turned back around.
Sokka was just close enough to hit him in the back of his stupid helmet.
•••
There was yelling in the corridor, and Zuko was five seconds away from throwing a fireball at the next person to interrupt his meditation. Not that meditation was going very well anyway, but he was mad on principle.
The stupid Water Tribe boy with the stupid hair and the stupid ‘wow nice swords’ comment as Zuko was literally tying him up and-
“Fuck!” Someone yelled, down the corridor, and Zuko shot to his feet.
He stormed across the hall and threw the door open with more force than strictly necessary. Uncle would have said something stupid and profound about anger, but Uncle wasn’t here and Zuko was ready to beat someone up.
“What’s going on?”
Two guards startled and started at him, looking almost comically guilty, like kids caught sneaking sweets at night. Zuko might have laughed a year ago, but right now he was ready to yell for the next three hours (even though he felt bad every time, and he was still freaking out about the fact one of the crewmen had started crying one time).
“Sword guy!”
And then his gaze was dragged away, to the boy sitting in the cell and grinning at him. There was moonlight filtering through the porthole, and it was probably the white hair, but he suddenly didn’t look human. Waterbender, something in the back of his head reminded him, but it wasn’t just that. His eyes were blue, Zuko had seen them earlier, but they looked almost black in the darkness. But they didn’t look intimidating, not exactly. But an odd feeling was seeping through him, curling and twisting in his stomach, like a warm drink. Or poison.
Zuko slammed the door and walked away.
