Supposedly, people with Anphantasia don't get scared reading scary stories, or at least not much. Is that true with you if you ever read Horror?

You know, I'd never thought about it, but I suppose it is. To an extent, anyway.

Follows a discussion of my relationship to horror prose and media; if you don't know what aphantasia is, as many people coming to this tumblr don't, I have a tag for it here that may help -- it's basically the lack of a "mind's eye", a visual imagination, so I hear/read things and don't see an image of them in my mind. If you are scoffing right now that nobody actually has a mind's eye, congratulations, you may also have aphantasia. The articles linked in the tag will be useful to you.

I have definitely been scared by prose before but it's very rare, and not much since I was a child, when the stories I found scary were preying on fears I already had. I loved the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books, and I think it's not unusual that I found the illustrations more frightening than the prose, but the only story that ever scared me was the one about the vampire who kept trying to grab a kid through a window -- because I had a window over my bed in my childhood bedroom and I was terrified I'd look up to see someone looking down at me through it. Likewise, as an adult, the only content in horror I find scary is what I think of as "mind horror" -- the loss of faculty or the loss of awareness of faculty (think the end scene of the novel Hannibal with the brain). Which is one of my biggest fears.

I don't read much horror because generally I get bored, which has in the past made me feel faintly appalled at myself, but which now makes more sense. Certainly I have no interest in slasher-style gore in prose, because I find it uninteresting and it goes on a really long time, while I don't watch it in movies/TV because the visual is upsetting -- so if I was getting the visual from the prose I might react more emotionally. I am a fan of Stephen King but mostly his early work where he was shorter on suspense, and I was reading it because I liked the ideas and the characters. Carrie is super interesting because of the personalities involved, not because of the violence or the horror aspects. But I've never seen a movie adaptation and I can imagine I would be deeply unsettled if not distraught by certain scenes if depicted visually. Although I didn't find the Hannibal TV series super upsetting (I mostly was put off by how bad I imagined Will smelled) so perhaps body horror just doesn't do it for me.

This may also explain my hard-no on zombie media, because I'm not scared at all of zombies, I just find them boring and gross, and that leaves the post-apocalyptic humans. My hard-no on post-apocalypse anything is an aversion to imagining the end of my world, though, which isn't visual, it's conceptual, and not scary, just upsetting.

Like, people kept suggesting Zombies Run! to me when I was taking up running and -- well, one, I needed the music to keep my pace, I didn't want it interrupted. But two, I didn't see why a bunch of random groaning noises would make me run faster. If you could see zombies chasing you in your head, yeah, that'd probably be more motivating.

It kind of explains too why I haven't written much horror. I used to be very curious about how people worked out what's "scary" in horror prose and I guess part of the curiosity came from not experiencing it myself. It's tough to know how to write a scary story when stories don't scare you.

To be clear, I definitely experience fear. Reading Stephen King's "It" didn't really scare me, but there were scary moments in the film adaptations. I startle at jumpscares. There's plenty of stuff in real life that I'm scared of. And even podcasts -- I don't get mental images during podcasts like apparently most people do, but Magnus Archives got me with the "digging into your pre-existing fears" thing once or twice, and while I didn't finish The Left Right Game (I just got bored) the hitchhiker scene definitely got me. But I think, unless it's playing on something conceptual that already existed, yeah, I don't find prose particularly frightening.

Huh. This feels like the kind of thing that could have a significant impact on my creative output if I could crowbar my way into it. Knowing that I as an aphantic don't need descriptions that other people do has already, I think, impacted my editing process, but this feels like it maybe would somehow have an effect on the whole thing -- the fact that I don't experience emotions when reading in the same way other people do because I don't get the visuals is something to meditate on.

How the fuck did I ever even become a writer. Like what's up with that.

(Ironically it was X-Files fanfic. X-Files, a show that very much did scare me, for which I wrote and read a lot of fanfic, none of which did...yikes. Well, that's something to meditate on for the weekend.)

This is a blog for making polls about giant/tiny size headcanons about characters from all kinds of different media, run by me, the one-and-only @tiny-brain. Yeah, you've probably (never) heard of me. I (don't) get around.

Each poll will be about a different character from a different piece of media, determining whether they should shrink, grow, or if they'd work better as a full-on sizeshifter!

I'm going to try to make this a daily thing, but don't be surprised if I disappear or forget to post some days. Basically just check back whenever and see if there's a new poll or not. I'll try not to keep you all waiting too long if I do go missing.

There's also a chance I'll hand this blog off to someone else in the future, cause while I obviously wanna stick around for as long as I can, I DO NOT want to be doing this forever. I might be willing to come back on occasion though, so who knows?

Was Qubo actually coming back?

So I heard a rumor that's been going around that The Qubo Channel, an American children's tv channel that ran from 2007-2021, was coming back in 2023 and this idiot fan did everything they could to make it seem real, videos and everything but it all turned out to be fake. They said that the company E Scripps announced it but they never did and this random person made an entire wiki page of it too. Qubo is officially never coming back, although I hope someone will have a solution or come up with a replacement kids channel. It's sad that kids have nothing that genuinely teaches them good lessons, besides Bluey. Don't get me wrong, I love Bluey, Bluey's awesome but it's like the only thing that kids can watch nowadays that's good for them. In my opinion, you need MORE THAN ONE SHOW! You don't have to have as many shows as I did growing up, but you can't only just have one show either.

I'll admit I was more of a tv kid, but I grew up in a small, dumpy town in Pennsylvania and I had no siblings or kids in the neighborhood to play with. I also never really had close friends at school who I got to hang out with outside of school, because school days lasted long and we were private people. When I got home, I'd most likely draw, watch tv, or take a nap. I did spend time outside but not in the autumn and winter as much because I hated cold, especially when I got older. I did watch a lot more tv than most kids did but it wasn't an unhealthy amount. I also wasn't really a Disney movie kid as much either. Disney channel? Yes, but I didn't really watch much of their animated movies growing up, especially not the older ones that everyone else grew up with. I had older parents and also was raised by my grandma, and no siblings so it's not like we had family movies nights like some families. Being an only child, I was basically the boss of the tv and my mom grew up playing outside and not much of a tv kid, so she just let me watch the kids shows that were playing on tv. Just to clear things up, I was born in November of 2002 and my mom gave birth to me when she was 42 years old, so a lot of stuff from her time wasn't really meant for kids. So yeah, I mostly just grew up watching tv channels. I was lucky enough to have Qubo, Sprout and the Nickelodeon and Disney channels. Lucky for me, I didn't watch much Cartoon Network, which in my opinion was kind of a good thing because a lot of stuff back then was inappropriate. Thank God I had more relaxing and... less unhinged shows to watch on channels like Sprout and Qubo. I know Qubo had its fair share of weird shows like Grossology and Being Ian, but most of the Qubo shows were good. In fact, some of my favorite shows ever came from Qubo!

Let's have a little talk about a well known Canadian show that was based off a book series, called "Scaredy Squirrel". If you were in Canada, you probably watched Scaredy Squirrel on YTV or Treehouse, but us Americans watched it on Cartoon Network, Disney X.D or Qubo. I was the kid who watched it on Qubo because I ignored the Cartoon Network channel growing up and I think around 2013 was when I started to hate Disney so... yeah. I became a fan of Scaredy Squirrel through Qubo and that show means so much to me. Another show that means a lot to me is called "Marvin the tap-dancing Horse" which originally aired on PBS kids for like 2 years, as part of a block called the "Bookworm bunch" which only lasted a short time and plus, I wasn't even born yet. I got introduced to Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse through the Qubo Channel and I absolutely fell in love with it. Honestly, those are both very underrated shows and deserve an actual FANDOM rather than 3 fans. A few people I know have at least heard of Scaredy Squirrel barely anyone has heard of Marvin the dancing horse (and yes, Marvin is based off a book too). I highly recommend those shows, as well as many others!

Cable tv is kind of shutting down now anyway, and it's sad. All we have now is streaming services and a lot of them just don't have those nice kids shows that Qubo had. A lot of those shows were cute and not too overstimulating for the younger kids, and almost everything they have now is for older kids. Sprout became Universal Kids, which is more for older kids and they didn't need to do that. We need more things for little kids too. Also, as a 21 year old with trauma, I don't like rough adult shows like South park and Hazbin hotel, I want more calming shows like Scaredy Squirrel and Toddworld. (Also, I'll put a list of my favorite shows from Qubo in my last paragraph).

I hope one day I can make my own tv channel or streaming service to replace Qubo or Sprout, but nothing can really "replace" my favorite channels growing up. Also, if you want some relaxing kids shows from Qubo to watch, I'll give you some;

Scaredy Squirrel, Toddworld, Stella & Sam, Timothy goes to school, Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse, Maggie & the Ferocious Beast, Harry & his Bucket of Dinosaurs, Miss Spider Sunny Patch, Babar, Veggietales, Gofrette, I Spy, My Friend Rabbit, Sandra the Fairytale Detective, Willa's Wild Life, Pecola, Turbo Dogs, Sidekick, and Stickin' Around (although there's a trigger warning).

My friends and I are rewatching a bunch of Christian films from my childhood and we completed the original Left Behind trilogy the other day. Here were my observations

I do think it's funny that the plot essentially begins with GMOs. GMOs are bad because more people being fed means world peace and globalism. That is bad.

"I'm Buck Williams and I'm standing in a wheat field" is now doomed to be repeated within my friend group for at least the next two years.

The antichrist's name is Nikolai Carpathia. He has the accent of a guy mimicking a Russian accent. This feels on par with JK Rowling naming her one Asian character "Cho Chang".

The character names also include (aside from the aforementioned antichrist and Kirk Cameron's character) Rayford Steele, Chloe, and Patty. Somehow it has the aura of a porno.

Despite the only demographic to be exclusively raptured is children under the age of 10, this fact is pretty much ignored.

Kirk Cameron's character (Buck) confronts police officers who are shooting at looters and teenagers for lacking compassion. By today's standards, this is woke propaganda.

I'm pretty sure the prior thing is to show that Buck is a good and pure soul who just needs to read a Bible to be fully redeemed because how else can you have a non-Christian protagonist in a movie like this. Or maybe this is to show that he's misguided and worldly. However, despite being a hot, sexy, prolific journalist, the movie also points out that he is a virgin.

The alleged romantic tension between Buck and pilot-not-porn-star Rayford Steele's daughter is painful to watch because Kirk Cameron will not kiss anyone other than his wife. There's a lot of awkward side hugs and leaving room for Jesus. Given that they end up getting married later, this is amusing to me.

These movies really want you to know two things: World Peace Is Bad, and Jews Are Bad. There are direct plot points specifically about converting Jewish people to Christianity so that they cannot usher in the rule of the antichrist.

I think it's really funny that, despite TV and the internet existing during the time this series takes place, the connection between the rapture prophecies/fanfics and The Fucking Rapture is only discovered by our protagonists and a handful of other random guys. I think a mass disappearance of certain branches of Christianity and children would provoke some kind of doubt and curiosity, but no. That's bad for plot. Instead, the whole world goes straight to "y'know what? Let's just get rid of all religion at once. Forever." This is because all other religions are made from faithless heathens who just really hate Christians, and since there are no longer Christians, they no longer have to Do Religion. I guess.

I also think it's funny that the main characters, though they themselves were convinced to convert because of the rapture, do not use the rapture as a means to convert the masses. They jump straight to bunker church and secret Bible brigades. When they do successfully convert others, it is either by trotting out the tired, "YOU THINK THIS WORLD WAS AN ACCIDENT???" Case for Christ nonsense, or basically threatening their victim with damnation.

Case in point, Rayford Steele talks a guy out of suicide by reminding him that he will never see his wife and child again if he goes through with it. Suicide = Straight To Hell.

There's a scene where the antichrist like... tries to "test" Rayford Steele by revealing his uber spoopy ghost face and seeing if he reacts. Because I guess the uber spoopy ghost face only works on believers. Te uber spoopy ghost face is his figure showing up in infrared, then his face stretching out cartoonishly, and his eyes turning black. This scared me as a child. It is the second funniest part of the movie.

Also, the title of the second movie being "Left Behind: Tribulation Force" is giving big "Electric Boogaloo" energy.

The antichrist reveals of the evil Global Community organization to the protagonists by handing them a piece of loose leaf printer paper with a logo that I would've made in the computer lab in 2005. This is done to the tune of sinister and dramatic music. This is the funniest part of the movie.

The third movie begins with the introduction of The President. It was previously stated that the president had been raptured. There was no mention of presidents up until this point. I know the line of succession exits but it really felt like they just forgot.

Oh yeah...the Pope was also raptured because he was secretly protestant.

Buck marries Rayford Steele's daughter at the same time Rayford Steele marries a random blonde lady. It feels weird and icky, which is furthered by the fact that the now married daughter will henceforth be referred to as "our girl" by both of these men for the rest of the movie.

We also had to stop the movie several times due most of the female cast consisting of skinny white blonde ladies. We could not tell the difference between any of them except for by their eyeliner. If she wears dark eyeliner, she's a whore.

Due to the plot involving the release of a virus that mainly only affects Christians, this film was definitely the most fun to dissect.

The virus is stored in badly CGId glowy green goo bottles, which for a series that has tried very hard to be serious, was awfully cartoony.

This movie does not give a fuck about the protagonists. This movie is about the president. I'm pretty sure this is because the protagonists, who are Christian, are no longer allowed to commit murder. The president is not a Christian, so he gets to use a gun.

The president has random warehouses to do casual interrogations in wherever and whenever he wants. It is clear that the creators were really struggling to make due with the set.

We know the antichrist is bad because he wants to take everyone's nukes. The president's main goal in this movie is to keep the nukes.

Back in the side plot, it turns out that the Christians are getting infected with green goo disease because the antichrist hid it in their Bibles. As the protagonists drown in guilt, the suspense of the plot really starts to fall apart. Their entire goal is to Get More People Into Heaven, and in this series, reading the Bible will automatically make anyone a Christian (the Bible's words cannot be resisted). If anything, they just fast-tracked a bunch of people into heaven, and they no longer have to endure the next seven years of apocalypse.

We should've all watched these movie pre-COVID. The only person who wears a mask and gloves is the antichrist. The protagonists also mention avoiding vaccines and relying on God/sacrificing themselves instead. This movie predicted 2020.

The super advanced green goo virus has an instacure antidote. Fucking red wine. This seems like a helluva lot of oversight to hand the "drinks red wine as part of religious rituals" group a virus that can be instacured by red wine.

WW3 starts. Somehow, this does not cause a nuclear winter.

The antichrist discovers that he can force-choke people.

The president suicide-bombs the antichrist's tower in order to "slow him down". Given that the antichrist cannot be killed and cell phones exist, I have no idea what exactly that was supposed to do.

As someone who grew up fully believing that Obama was the antichrist and Muslim (which is conservative for "literally a member of Al-Queda/ISIS").... and Black but they didn't say that part out loud), it was interesting in retrospect to watch this movie unfold. The president in this movie is a Black, non-Christian man who is initially for world peace, but then converts to Christianity and suicide-bombs the antichrist. We all have different interpretations of this, but we do agree that they would not have made that specific set of choices today. That said, my interpretation is the correct one /hj

Last song I listened to: Soap by The Oh Hellos. I burn CDs and listen to them in my car. (The first few I tried to give themes and titles, and select the perfect song orders, but ended up kind of bad and the other was cursed and wouldn't play even though I remade it three times, so I just switched to throwing a ton of songs together on "Random Mixes" and enjoying.) I was listening to my very first random mix on the drive home from work and this one came up. It's a pretty snazzy song. I think Theseus and Hello, My Old Heart are my favourites from the band.

Last book I read: Can I do a couple? I just recently finished Play of Shadows by Sebastien de Castell. It's the first book of Court of Shadows, the sequel series to his Greatcoats series. Greatcoats is one of my favourite series, filled with swashbuckling action, clever humour, and an absolutely miserable protagonist, Falcio val Mond, who always manages to get back up and keep going anyway. I read everything de Castell writes, and after a string of books with severe pacing problems (check out The Malevolent Seven for a book that doesn't have a second act) and other problems (I have a hard time seeing any book topping Crucible of Chaos as the worst book I've read this year), he finally seems to be back. The book didn't pack quite the emotional punch of some of his other books, but it definitely made me want to jump up and cheer for the heroes at the end.

The other book I just finished is The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden. I liked her Winternight Trilogy (look it up and be prepared for some absolutely gorgeous covers, with prose to match), so I was excited to see something new from her. This book was about World War I, with some fantasy elements used for magic realism. (Portraying a soldier's struggle with addiction and PTSD through the lens of him losing his soul to the devil was a brilliant idea.) I most subsist on a steady diet of fantasy books, but this one had me hungering to read a few more historical books. I might have to pick up some books about the Halifax Explosion.

Last film I watched: I haven't watched much on my own for a while, but my friends do a movie night every Sunday. The last two times I tuned in, we watched Jesus Christ Superstar and Pokemon 3: Spell of the Unown. They were both fairly cute movies. I liked Judas's actor.

Last TV series I watched: I've been making my way through The Office for the first time. I'm on Season 3 and this happened to me, actually. There was some stuff I was like, "Wow, that was funny. I should tell my coworkers about it," but then I realized that I can't be the guy who tells his coworkers about this funny new show called The Office.

Last video game I played: If visual novels count, Umineko. I've been working my way through it slowly for about five and a half years and I'm finally closing in on the end. It's peak fiction and the greatest love story of the twentieth century. It's also funny I picked a game this insanely long for my first visual novel. Other than visual novels, I just finished Pokemon Legends: Arceus, after putting in 104 hours this year. Completing the Dex is my favourite part of any Pokemon game, so having it be more involved and include a big checklist made the game basically crack for me. I've also been casually playing some Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) with my brother. Every time we play it, I'm always amazed by how good it is and how much content it has. I want to take command posts forever.

Last thing I googled: "Dandadan Aira". I just started the manga the other day and I like her best, so I wanted to double check her full name, I think? Other than that I'm mostly looking up when books are available at my local stores. I've been religiously checking when The Book that Broke the World will be available and I'm not even sure if I'm buying it.

Last thing I ate: A few snacks from my snack drawer. I also had a Quaker yogurt bar at work. I bought a big box of them last year, but I had to throw them out because of the Salmonella. (Chewed through a lot of them before that came out, though, including eating three on an airplane.)

Amount of sleep: Supposedly seven hours, since I went to bed right after finishing The Warm Hands of Ghosts last night. The only problem is that if I get to bed at a good time, I sleep fitfully, so I'm either sleeping poorly or sleeping well, but not getting anywhere near enough sleep.

Currently reading: I started Empire of Silence, the first book of The Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio, at work today. I've had the first three books sitting on my shelf for a year or two and I finally got around to starting it. (I'd resolved to do both this series and Kushiel's Legacy this year, after having both for so long, and I got that one done at the start.) I'm not very far in, but I enjoy the writing style a lot, even if a lot of the worldbuilding is obviously cribbed from Dune. (Whoa, look, mentats.) I've heard it picks up a lot in the second book, so I'm excited for what's in store for me.

2. My three favorite characters and why I love them so much.

Hello hi would you like to hear about the best TARDIS team you've never heard of, right as I've fallen back hard into special interest fixation on them :D :D :D

So there's this book series.

After The Enemy Within, aka Doctor Who the TV Movie, premiered to an astounding lack of enthusiasm in 1996, BBC books decided to steal Virgin Publishing's idea to write novels about dr who, and promptly yoinked the license so they could cut out the middleman and do just that, this time starring Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor instead of Sylvester McCoy's Seventh. This novel series was called, aptly enough, The Eighth Doctor Adventures. So entirely skipping over almost three decades' worth of entertaining intrafandom drama and also how nu!who shamelessly stole basically every good idea the EDAs ever had (the biggest being of course the Time War, tho tragically nowhere near as well done), my favorite TARDIS crew:

The Eighth Doctor (as you may have guessed), Fitz Kreiner, and Anji Kapoor.

I love them, I adore them, they're my best friends. All three of them are amazing in their own right, but they're absolutely phenomenal as a team.

Eight, and the EDA version of them specifically, is my favorite doctor bar none. They're flighty and giddy and tactile and deeply affectionate, they're extremely weird and have a number hyperfixations and special interests and other very relatable neurodivergent tendencies. They are very prone to amnesia in a way which starts off as kind of a running gag and ends up being a huge plot point for the entire second half of the series. They're easily the most genderfluid the Doctor ever gets before textually being played by a woman and going by she/her, which is a big part of why I like using they/them pronouns for the Doctor generally. They kiss people often and canonically date people of multiple genders. Being played by (or at least written in reference to) Paul McGann, they are extremely pretty. They also go through the absolute fucking wringer, both in the sense that their arc plots are really dramatic and complicated and dark, and also in the sense that some of the folks writing for the series are pretty unapologetic whump fans lol. Best Doctor. No notes.

Next up is My BoyTM. The ur-blorbo himself, Fitzgerald Michael Kreiner. He's the best and I hate him. He's the worst and I love him. He's a musician from 1963 with appalling fashion sense and truly awful luck. He's canonically bi and in love with the Doctor (and their kiss in the novel Dominion in 1998 was the first kiss between the Doctor and a man in the history of Dr Who). He's a clone of himself because Eight lost the original Fitz 600 years in the future and then he joined cult of shitty time traveling mall goths. The original Fitz lived 2000 years and was filled with hate and wanted to kill the Doctor for abandoning him but never actually stopped loving them. He's a massive idiot. He's genuinely embarrassing so often but also despite thinking of himself as a coward and an asshole he's very brave despite his constant terror and very kind despite his pretending that he's only out for himself. He is such astoundingly perfect tumblr bait it's not even funny. He's one of the longest running companions in the franchise by number of consecutive stories.

Last of my darlings is the myth, the legend herself, Anji Kapoor. The first Asian companion in the history of Doctor Who, she's a stock futures trader from 2001 and to this day the only example I can think of off the top of my head of a woman of color having her white boyfriend get fridged for the sake of her emotional pain and character development. On the surface, she's the one with braincell, but she's so much more than just the white boy babysitter stereotype. She's a massive closet nerd who loves Star Trek but won't admit it, she's got a very weird thought process that makes her jump to the most absolutely batshit decisions while justifying them to herself as being perfectly reasonable and logical and not at all insane, she thinks of Fitz as a brother and the Doctor as a sister, she once called the Doctor a useless otterfucker, literally what can't she do (other than get back to her own time and planet rip).

The three of them have such a wonderful dynamic together. They're best friends and close family despite them being thrown together entirely by chance. They banter and joke and snark together, they riff off each other and enjoy each other's company, all three of them would catch a bullet for each other and all three of them more or less have. They're in a run of I think 25 books, which is a pretty significant time to spend together, and while there are some clunkers in their run ngl, they've also got some truly amazing books together, including one of my favorite books not just in the EDAs or Dr Who, but as a whole, The Year of Intelligent Tigers. I love them so so much I can't even.

I'm... not sure how accessible anything to do with the EDAs is give I fell off the DW deep end solidly a decade ago and at this point I just have to admit I'm in for life, but I have observed that most people who do read the EDAs tend to put 8&fitz&anji in at least their top five TARDIS teams, if not their first pick. Anyway, I love them, thank you so much for letting me gush about the best TARDIS team in all of Dr Who :D

So... they change and tbh I'm going to forget a ton of characters I love and then scream in my head later like 'oh no but THAT character and THAT character and THAT character' but I'll do my best!

Kiriyama Rei from March Comes in Like a Lion - Probably my favourite character possibly of all time. Introverted, kind of ace-coded right up until the end of the manga when it changes (and since the anime never ended he stays ace-coded throughout that lmao), very human, extremely depressed, and I just think he's a very good depiction of like...what it's like to live with extremely repressive depression and post-trauma while not necessarily knowing you have those things.

Dazai Osamu from Bungou Stray Dogs - He's a brilliant intellect genius with too much ability to know so much about the world that he kind of ends up suicidal all the time due to his upbringing / some of the things he's done and also what he's experienced. I just enjoy him. (Notable runner up here is Nakahara Chuuya but dslkajf)

Felix Harrowgate from the Doctrine of Labyrinths trilogy - Angsty, PTSD, waspish, 'I'm going to hurt you because I was hurt and then hate myself and do very self-destructive things about it but keep that part a secret so I just look like a constant dickhead,' brilliant, very good at magic. Love this dude. Would walk hundreds of miles for this dude, like the song. Would definitely write a long-ass fanfic about him.

Daeshik from Love So Pure - I love this guy SO much. He's a side-story / secondary pairing in the manhwa but I LOVE him because he's so against type. He's dorky but not in a very cute way, he's overbearing, he's SO neurodivergent coded it's painful and sometimes hilarious, he's determined and ambitious, he's not 'hot' in any typical kind of twink way, and I know he's split the fandom between 'god he's so annoying' and 'Daeshik is the BEST.' The whole webtoon is fucking amazing anyway, but Daeshik has my whole heart in his journey from 'dorky annoying overbearing friend' to 'oh I just realised I'm gay and now everything is Pride Pride Pride and I'm definitely crying next to a dildo I bought that was too big for me.'

Dana Scully from The X-Files - I didn't know it at the time, but this was very much my bisexual awakening. I mean I'm pretty heavily ace now, but I'm mostly not into cishet dudes, and I had pictures of Scully up on my wall like how did I not fucking know. Anyway, scientist, smart, 'so done with your shit' and just wry and witty and *clenches fist* so short and tiny and powerful. I love her. (And Gillian Anderson).

Loki from the MCU - Not necessarily every iteration, but I do love how Tom Hiddleston plays him, and I appreciate the queerer representation. Adore this guy. Look at him, what an absolute dickhead of a god. 10/10 would read him in hurt/comfort fics and PWPs again.

Hyunsoo Seo and Youngchan Baek from Perfect Buddy / XXX Buddy - Possibly my favourite manhwa of all time and I really hope that stays true because it's not finished yet. Idk how to describe these characters because they're both very complex as you get to know them better, but basically 'angry wet cat man with past trauma that he hides exceptionally well vs. Gwyn-dimensioned blond puppy dog who is just pretending to be a puppy dog because he knows exactly how threatening he is and is willing to be to protect the people he loves.'

Murderbot in the Murderbot novella series - I think all of us - or most of us - find Murderbot incredibly relatable and that's refreshing as fuck in any novel series tbh. (ART as runner-up though, love that fucker).

Sebastian Michaelis from Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler - Honestly there were a lot of kind of 'extremely powerful but kind of shitty fuckboys' I wanted to put in this category including Gojou Satoru from JJK, Reigen from MP100, and even Louis from Beastars, but Sebastian's gonna win out because I still don't know if he's going to eat Ciel at the end of that series and I very much love not knowing because he's such a devious fuckhead. Love that not-actually-a-man.

Yuurakutei Yakumo (Kikuhiku) from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - I just... *flails* Almost no one has seen this anime series and it kind of kills me because firstly the books were written by someone practiced in writing BL and even though this isn't BL you can still tell the vibes are there. Secondly, one of the most ace-coded characters ever. Gender-fuckery abounds, which is fun. Thirdly just, honestly, more folks should watch this?

There were a lot of characters I know I missed but I'm pretty satisfied with this list.

Adventure Heaven is finally opening on July 28!

Sakai: The movie takes place in a new stage in the Land of Death, Haaka Baaka. There are over 300 extras just for the coronation scene. Filming with that crowd is a memorable experience. I look forward to seeing the final cut.

Watanabe: I still remember going to see Sentai’s summer movie with my family as a kid. The movie is on another vector from the TV series, I went into the studio hoping the movie can become a treasured memory for the summer holiday.

Murakami: We have many talented actors in our main cast, but the special guest stars for this movie are just dazzling. I had the honour of working with Ms. Hinagata Akiko (Iroki) two years before. I've also been a fan of Ms. Sakura Ayane (Debonica).

Ms. Murakami, in previous interviews you mentioned that you like anime. How do you feel about working with veteran voice actor Ms. Sakura Ayane?

Murakami: Taisei-kun and Sakura-san are on first-name basis because of how close their characters are. When I heard that, I said, "I want to do that too!" (laughs)

Everyone: (laughs)

Sakai: From the first day, I was thinking I could talk to her like our characters. Sakura-san is very friendly so I feel free to speak around her. Also... her voice is incredible!

Murakami: Right! Listening to her voice in person is the best.

Watanabe: While filming Debonica’s singing scene, everyone would follow along and hum the same tune to themselves. One by one, people all over the studio started singing. (laughs)

(laughs) Apart from Ms. Sakura and Ms. Hinagata, Mr. Nakamura Shido also joined the cast as the first King of Shuggodom, Rhionel.

Sakai: Actually, I was once an extra in one of Shido-san’s film and was lucky enough to meet him. I am touched that I can act alongside him after all this time. On the set there is a tension that only Shido-san's presence can bring. To be able to feel that atmosphere in my body is my pleasure. After our scenes wrapped, he taught me how to breathe while acting.

Watanabe: That's awesome!

Murakami: What do you mean by "breathing while acting"?

Sakai: In everyday conversations, the moments when we breathe in between speaking, you should make that a conscious part of your performance, so he told me.

Watanabe: I wish that could be me. Cast members of the TV series is basically fixed, so it was a fresh experience filming with three experienced guest stars.

I look forward to seeing how the new characters connect to the story! In the movie, Gira finally becomes King, Mr. Sakai, do you feel any change or growth in your character?

Sakai: Gira is still the same person that wears his heart on his sleeve. However, as the story moves forward, I can feel his trust towards the his teammates gradually deepens. In Episode 17, "The King Does Not Run", the last scene where Gira runs to Yanma's rescue, it is a tangible representation of their friendship.

There is a snippet of Gira's coronation in the show, but the movie will show more behind that. What kind of king will Gira become? What does Gira want to do as King of Shugoddom? We will learn more about that in the movie.

Please share about the TV series as well. Is there anything in the episodes featuring Gira, Yanma and Himeno that is your favourite?

Watanabe: If it's these three, I like Episode 7, "The Wrath of Gods".

Murakami: I know!

Watanabe: You have Gira who rushed forward alone, and Yanma who asked him to stop for his sake, and when you throw Himeno into the mix, it becomes well-balanced.

Murakami: [Himeno and Yanma] didn’t set out to help or give that one last push to the hesitant [Gira], yet they are inspired by one another’s words and a mysterious balance evolved between the three of them. Gira and Yanma, Yanma and Himeno, Himeno and Gira; each of these relationships is great in its own way. Take Episode 17 that we just talked about, the friendship of Gira and Yanma is really cool!

Watanabe: Episode 17 is when Yanma first call Himeno by name and asked her for a favour, that is an important scene too!

Murakami: Yanma asking Himeno for help is proof of a trust and reliance budding between them. Yanma was already exhausted from the endless battles. Making sure his wish was understood by Himeno, that she would take care of this so he can encourage himself to stand up again. That makes a very good scene in my opinion.

Both Yanma and Himeno have a wonderful relationship with their aides.

Watanabe: In scenes with Shiokara, we often end up in intense situations so I had a lot of fun. Before the camera rolls, I'll discuss the scene in detail with Chiwata-san.

Murakami: Everyone in Ishabana loves Himeno. I think Sebas has a tendency to spoil for her, in contrast, the Head Maid holds a more objective view. That power balance is interesting to me.

By the way, how would your character spend the summer holiday?

Sakai: Gira.... I think Gira would go on beetle hunts with the children. He would go play outdoors full of energy!

Watanabe: Yanma doesn't look like he would take a day off, if he had time on hand maybe he would just start a new invention. (laughs) He'd blast the music and enjoy working.

Murakami: Himeno would take a beach vacation! I can see her taking a sip of tropical juice under the parasol, eating her favourite desserts and watching the sunset.

Everyone is off to their own, looks like they would enjoy the summer! Then, please tell our readers a few highlights of the movie.

Murakami: In the movie, you will see a new side of each of the six members. The charisma of the characters, a serious story as well as comedic scenes are all packed into one. On top of that, Gira finally becomes king in this movie, so please pay attention to the gap between the new him and the show's Gira who was always tied up and bullied!

Watanabe: I would love for kids to enjoy the visuals and how cool Gira is, but I'd also love for the adult audience to enjoy this movie. The reason of Gira claiming the throne, and the clash of beliefs between him and the antagonist... I can't say much more, but as a theme of King-Ohger, there is much to contemplate even for myself. Please see our movie with your family this summer holiday!

Sakai: The coronation is a highlight of course, another is when each king confronts their history and burden. Personally, I've put my heart and thoughts into this work. Please go see our movie on the big screen!

アニメイトタイムズでは、シュゴッダム新国王の即位と映画公開を記念して、キャスト6人へのインタビューを2回にわたってお届け！　

本稿では、ギラ／クワガタオージャー役の酒井大成さん、ヤンマ・ガスト／トンボオージャー役の渡辺碧斗さん、ヒメノ・ラン／カマキリオージャー役の村上愛花さんにお話を伺いました。

――映画『王様戦隊キングオージャーアドベンチャー・ヘブン』がいよいよ7月28日から公開されます。

クワガタオージャー/ギラ役酒井大成さん（以下、酒井）：映画には死の国＝ハーカバーカという新しい舞台が登場します。戴冠式のシーンは、300人以上のエキストラの方々に来ていただきました。その中でお芝居できたことは思い出になりました。完成した映画を見るのがとても楽しみです。

トンボオージャー/ ヤンマ・ガスト役渡辺碧斗さん（以下、渡辺）：夏のスーパー戦隊映画は、子供の頃に家族と観に行った思い出が強く残っています。TVシリーズとは違うベクトルで、映画が夏休みの楽しい思い出になればいいなという想いで撮影に臨みました。

カマキリオージャー/ヒメノ・ラン役村上愛花さん（以下、村上）：本編でも豪華なキャストがいらっしゃるんですけど、映画のために来てくださるゲストの方々もすごい豪華で！　イロキ役の雛形あきこさんは2年前にお仕事でご一緒したことがあったんです。デボニカ役の佐倉綾音さんも以前からファンでした。

――村上さんは放送前のインタビューでアニメ好きと伺いましたが、声優として活躍されている佐倉綾音さんとの共演はいかがでしたか？

村上：大成くんと佐倉さんが役を意識して名前で呼び合っていたんですよ。それを聞いて「私も名前で呼びたい！」って（笑）。

一同：（笑）

酒井：初日から意識的にお話しようとは思っていました。佐倉さんが本当に気さくな方なので、話しやすい空気を出してくれていたんです。あとは……声がとても素敵でした！

村上：うん！　生の声が最高でした。

渡辺：デボニカが歌うシーンの撮影では、みんな真似して口ずさんでいました。歌う人がひとりずつ増えていくんです（笑）。

――（笑）。佐倉さん、雛形さんに加え、シュゴッダム初代国王・ライニオール役として、中村獅童さんも出演されています。

酒井：実は、以前エキストラとして参加した映画で獅童さんをお見かけしたんです。そこから時を経て、共演できたことには感動しました。撮影現場に獅童さんがいらっしゃると、それだけで現場の空気が引き締まります。その空気感を肌で体感できて嬉しかったです。撮影が終わった後には、お芝居をするときの呼吸の仕方を教えてくれました。

渡辺：めちゃくちゃいいじゃん！

村上：呼吸ってどういうこと？

酒井：日常的な会話のあいだに入る呼吸を、お芝居でもしっかり意識するといいよって教えてくださいました。

渡辺：それは羨ましい。TVシリーズは基本的に決まったメンバーでやっているので、キャリアのある3人のゲストに来ていただいて、新鮮な撮影になったと思います。

――新キャラクターがどのように関わってくるのかとても楽しみです！　映画ではいよいよギラが王様になりますが、酒井さんの中でキャラクターの成長や変化を感じることはありますか？

酒井：喜怒哀楽がハッキリしている性格はそのままですね。ただお話が進むにつれて、徐々に仲間たちとの信頼関係が深まっていることは感じています。第17話「王は逃げない」のラストでギラがヤンマを助ける場面など、友情が形として見えるようになりました。

ギラが王様になるシーンは本編でもチラッと出てくるんですけど、映画はそれを深掘りする内容です。どのような流れで王様になったのか、シュゴッダムの王として何がしたいのかがより明確になる内容だと思います。

3人はお互いの言葉に刺激を受けている

――TVシリーズについても聞かせてください。ギラ、ヤンマ、ヒメノの3人が活躍するエピソードの中で、気に入っているものはありますか？

渡辺：この3人なら、第7話「神の怒り」が好きですね。

村上：めっちゃわかる！

渡辺：1人で突っ走るギラをヤンマが諌めるんですが、ヒメノを含めた3人のバランスが良かったです。

村上：背中を押すつもりはなくても、お互いの言葉に刺激を受ける不思議なバランスがこの3人にはあると思っています。ギラとヤンマ、ヤンマとヒメノ、ヒメノとギラ、それぞれの関係性も素敵で、先程も話題に挙がった17話でのギラとヤンマの友情は本当に格好良かったです！

渡辺：17話はヤンマが初めてヒメノを名前で呼んで、頼みごとをする場面も激アツだった！　

村上：ヤンマがヒメノを頼ったことは、2人に信頼関係が生まれている証だと思います。17話のヤンマはずっと戦い続けて疲れてるんですよ。ヒメノへのお願いを通じて「ここは大丈夫だ」と自らを奮い立たせたようにも見えて、とても良いシーンでした。

――ヤンマ、ヒメノは側近との関係性も素敵ですよね。

渡辺：シオカラとふたりのシーンは、熱いシチュエーションが多くて楽しいです。本番前から千綿さん（シオカラ役・千綿勇平さん）と色々相談しています。

村上：イシャバーナはヒメノへの愛が深いんですよ。セバス（ヒメノの側近・セバスチャン）は特に甘いと思います。逆に客観的な視点を持っているのが、メイド長かなって。そのパワーバランスは自分で見ていても面白いですね。

――ちなみに、もし自身が演じるキャラクターに夏休みがあったらどのように過ごしていると思いますか？

酒井：ギラは……子供たちとカブトムシを捕りに行くと思います。元気いっぱいに外で遊びそうです！

渡辺：ヤンマはあまり休むイメージがないので、手が空いたら新作の開発を始めるかもしれません（笑）。音楽を流しながら、楽しくやっている気がします。

村上：ヒメノは海辺でバカンスですね！　パラソルの下でトロピカルジュースを飲んでいると思います。大好きな甘いものを食べながら、海で黄昏れているんじゃないでしょうか。

――やることはバラバラですが、それぞれ楽しい夏休みになりそうです！　では改めて、公開を心待ちにしている読者に向けて、映画の見どころを教えてください。

村上：映画では、6人それぞれが新しい一面を見せています。キャラクターの魅力が、楽しいシーンにもシリアスなシーンにも詰まっているはずです。それから今回はギラが王様になる話なので、よく捕まったり、イジられたりしているTVシリーズとのギャップにも注目です！

渡辺：子供たちには画の迫力やギラのかっこよさを楽しんでほしいですが、今回の映画はぜひ大人の方にも観てほしいんです。ギラが王様になる理由や敵の信念に関係するので詳しくは言えないんですけど……物語のテーマとして、自分自身を省みるような内容になっていると思います。ぜひ夏休みに家族で観にきてください！　

酒井：戴冠式のシーンはもちろん、王様たちが抱えてるものと向き合うシーンは見どころの一つです。個人的にもエネルギーを必要とした撮影だったので、思い入れのある作品になりました。ぜひ大きなスクリーンで観てもらえると嬉しいです！

As time goes on and Disney canon gets messier and messier, I have come to the position of "Lucas views/canon >>>> Disney movies/TV series > Disney supplementary canon" as to what I hold as my own view of Star Wars and how I reconcile things. Sometimes you just can't reconcile things between them and I think for me to try is a fruitless path, because I'd never be satisfied by it. That's why I think viewing these things as different continuities is really the best way forward--when Disney diverges from Lucas' views, well, that's what is true for Disney's canon/continuity, but it doesn't affect Lucas' canon/continuity/views, they both exist at the same time and one cannot change the other. For the attachment thing specifically, I mostly get along by pointing out on my blog that it's not what Lucas put into his movies, it's not what the Jedi say in TCW, and then I just have to move on after that. I love many things about Disney canon, but sometimes I disagree with it and that's just where I have to leave it! I can talk about it on my blog, I can give examples, I can write/encourage others to write the kind of fic that I want, but I also just have to be okay with understanding that sometimes Disney canon doesn't get something right or that they want to change something, but that's only true for that continuity, it doesn't change the one I care about as my foundation (Lucas' continuity). Same for the celibacy thing--is it true for Disney's continuity? Sure. It's true that those characters said what they said. But what does that even mean? It doesn't mean I suddenly have to accept it, I can just say, "This conflicts with Lucas' statements, so I'm going to ignore it on my own level." or I can say, "It's not part of Lucas' canon, so it's not relevant to this discussion." if we're talking about Lucas' canon or I can say, "It's part of Disney's canon, they get to say what goes into their canon, but I get to say what goes into my fan creations and that thing in particular is getting tossed out the window." So ultimately how I reconcile it is that the context depends on the discussion we're having, whether it's relevant to that particular discussion or not (if we're discussing Disney's continuity, it's relevant, if we're discussing Lucas' continuity, it's not relevant, if we're discussing my bigger picture on the narrative themes of the Jedi, I get to personally say it's not relevant to me, everyone else gets to make that same choice for themselves and decide what they want). When I read or watch Disney era stuff, basically I just go, "Yeah, that's not what Lucas said, so I'm throwing that part out, but I'll happily enjoy the rest of the story!" For me, Lucas' continuity always takes precedence, because I'm not writing official Disney content. I'm writing posts on my blog and while I do strive to be objective and accurate when talking about Disney canon, I'm also okay with operating in a mixture of different continuities + my own personal "canon" of what I accept/don't accept. By the way, this is setting aside the huge thorny deliberately unsolvable question of the reliability/need for 100% coherency within Disney's continuity, like, seriously, I think everyone should let that dream go, it is not going to always be reconcilable, like we cannot reconcile the Kanan comics with the The Bad Batch to 100%, we just gotta live with that, and I think Lucasfilm operates on that understanding, no matter what else they said. Anything about how books/novels/comics are on the same level as the TV shows is an absolute lie. It's also setting aside that Lucasfilm has operated on the, "This is what this character said, they may not be a reliable narrator." idea for awhile now too, like when Rael says that Jedi are supposed to be celibate, that's what that character is saying, it's not necessarily written in the narrative stone as undeniably true. (I do think that Disney's Jedi are meant to be celibate, but since we're going with this example, I'm using it to show how I operate within the continuity, if that makes sense!) That's my general philosophy about these things anyway! And I think it's important to ask, what's the point of what any of us want to do here anyway? Why are we having any given conversation? Is it just to have fun? Is it to analyze themes, parallels, or contradictions within various source materials? That determines so much of what and how we reconcile things. If I'm just being silly on the internet, I don't give a shit what Disney says, you know? If I'm examining a Disney novel, okay, I give a shit what Disney says, but it doesn't have to change my bigger views of the Jedi, I might reject it but I might also like it better and adopt it in. At the end of the day, do what makes you happiest, there's no punishment or reward for breaking/following any "rules", only what satisfaction you personally derive from it! It makes me happy to prioritize Lucas canon, so that's what I do. If someone is happier prioritizing Legends or Disney canon or a mix of all three, they should do that! We can recognize when we're talking different continuities with each other and that should be fine. Each of us gets to choose what we do/don't reconcile with everything else.

Hi Ian, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hey! Yeah, of course. I’m a 22-year-old actor & artist from College Station, Texas. I’m a huge fan of all things art, especially the medium of film & tv. I did martial arts most of my life growing up from the ages of 9-16; it basically consumed my life. I’m a 3rd degree black belt and world champion in Weapons; I still keep up on my training. I love to write all sorts of things from songs to screenplays to journal entries, my day truly isn’t complete without writing. My life is centered around my relationship with Jesus, which is where I find my rest, my strength, and my inspiration.

Congratulations on landing on one of the leading role in “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, how does it feel to be one of the main characters Sokka in this Netflix live-action adaptation?

Thank you so much! It feels amazing to play such a beloved and iconic character in this series. This is my first leading role, so it was a big responsibility, and I grew so much as an actor and a person in general. I loved the animated series growing up, so it was really surreal to be a part of this life action adaptation.

You mentioned that you are a huge fan of the original animated series, what traits have you noticed from that version (or the movie adaptation) of Sokka that you like? How have you thought of continuing those traits in your portrayal of the character?

Yeah, my goal with taking on the role of Sokka was to embody the soul of that character and translate who Sokka really is while bringing in the elements that come with making him a real-life person. He’s the meat and sarcasm guy with the boomerang, but he also has a lot of very complicated emotions coming up inside of him that he’s really never been able to face before. It was a really fun challenge to get to play with all of the layers of who he is. He masks a lot of what he’s going through with his humor which I think is true for a lot of funny people. Getting to find those little correlations from the animated character and connect him to a real, emotional human place was a big task but a very gratifying one to take on.

And is there anything new you have implemented in your interpretaion? If so, what is it?

I think the newness that comes from adapting an animated character is getting to let their human components shine through. Finding their vulnerabilities and how and when they let those show and why. Being human is being vulnerable, so just keeping their core and soul of what makes them who they are and enhancing their humanity.

In the series, Sokka tries to prove his leadership and value even without having special abilities. In the end, he becomes a hero in his own way. Do you somehow resonate with Sokka’s perseverance? Do you think these traits could somehow be an inspiration to you in your real life?

Absolutely, perseverance is a crucial component to anyone becoming truly successful in anything. I had many grueling times in my career before coming onto this show where I was very close to booking the “career defining role” that ended up going to someone else. If I hadn’t learned my love for the art and on my pursuit of the craft, I never would’ve gotten this dream opportunity.

Trained in taekwondo at a young age, did it help you in your working on your role this time?

All movement experience while working on a show with this level of action definitely helps. However, my character doesn’t have a whole lot of technical knowledge when it comes to fighting, so I had to learn how to look like I didn’t know what I was doing when it came to martial arts for Sokka.

The series seems to be very dynamic, and we assume that the performance is very physically demanding. Have you gone through some training before filming? What kind of preparation have you done for the role, both mentally and physically?

They put us through a six week long bootcamp where all four of us got to learn how to bend all four elements which was very fun but didn’t cater to my character because obviously Sokka can’t bend. I took that time to get as physically in shape as I could. On the mental component of prep, I outlined the arc for what Sokka goes through for the first 2 episodes and mapping it out so I could know exactly where I was emotionally and why in any scene. We block shot two episodes at a time, so it was important for me to get as familiar as possible with the material and have anchor points to allow me to get into the head, heart and body of Sokka wherever we found him on his journey.

Could you tell us something interesting happened during the filming? Anything fun that we don’t know from behind the scene?

The way we filmed the Appa scenes were really interesting and weird because the whole bottom half of Appa, including the face, are fully CGI so we would hop on this huge 15 – 20ft animatronic and a crew of like 10 guys would surround the creature and manually pull and push the Appa rig up and down to make it look like we were flying.

For you, what are the most enjoyable things throughout this whole experience?

The family that I’ve made with the cast. The four of us have really become like siblings and have grown up for the past 3 years together. It’s by far been the biggest gift getting to work on this show that I’m really proud of and grateful for.

Now let’s talk about your entrepreneurship. You founded a clothing line, KALÓ SOIL, together with two of your pals. What inspires you to start this brand?

Kaló Soil is a passion project and a creative outlet for me and the guys. It was really great for me to put my hands to another passion of mine during the actors strike. At Kaló we’re all deeply influenced by our faith, so our goal is to glorify God through the art of fashion.

How did you step into the world of repurposing vintage clothes into unique new fashion pieces?

At Kaló Soil we have a large collection of curated vintage, which is how the company started. We were wholesaling vintage and needed a show room to work out of and display the pieces we’ve accumulated. When I joined the company with Ryan Sullivan and Hunter Baker, we integrated our “Made-in-house” products which are our original designs hand sewn and sourced In LA. We still sell curated vintage alongside our own pieces online and in-store.

During the preparation of the physical store, you guys helped a homeless contractor (or maybe an interior designer you would say?) by accommodating him in the upcoming space and let him design the furniture in the store. This is indeed a benevolent act. What encourages you to do so? Could you tell us more about the backstory and about the collaboration?

We met our friend Quinn while moving into our storage space near Skid row in DTLA and hired him to help us source products for the furniture and interior design section of the store. He’s a great guy and we’ve learned a lot from him. He has an amazing eye for the unusual which is something that all of us at Kaló really admire and value.

Are there any future plans for Ian Ousley? Both for his acting career and his fashion entrepreneurship?

The plan right now is to go back for the next two seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender and pour my heart, soul, sweat and best efforts into the process of serving the project to make it the best it can possibly be. I’m about to start filming another project this summer that I’m very excited to dive into and share with all of you. A huge desire of mine is to direct, so I’m hoping to get my own short film shot before we start filming the show again. However, I’m mostly just trying to stay centered and focused on maintaining my relationship with the arbiter of peace, truth and life. That relationship between Jesus and I, above anything I could do in my career, is my ultimate goal and purpose.

DC Studios | Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters

Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters:

Creature Commandos: An animated seven episode series, written by Gunn, that is already in production. Originally a team of classic monsters assembled to fight Nazis, this is a modern take on the concept. The voice actors have yet to be cast but the executives are looking to find people who can voice the animated characters and also portray the live-action versions when the anti-heroes to show up in movies and shows.

Waller: A spin-off of Gunn’s own HBO Max hit series, Peacemaker, Viola Davis will return as the ruthless and morally ambiguous head of a government task force. It is being written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver, the creator of the Doom Patrol TV series.

Superman: Legacy: The movie featuring the Man of Steel that Gunn is writing and may direct, although no commitments on that end have been made. While the two previous titles are meant to be “aperatifs,” in Safran’s words, Superman is the true kick off for the duo’s DCU plans. “It’s not an origin story,” Safran said. “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness as old-fashioned.” A release date of July 11, 2025 has been penciled in.

Lanterns: Greg Berlanti’s long-in-the-works Green Lanterns TV series has been scrapped and the duo have parted ways with the longtime DC series steward. In its place will be a new take on the space cops with power rings. “Our vision for this is very much in the vein of True Detective,” Safran described. “It’s terrestrial-based.” It will feature prominent Lantern heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart and is one of the most important shows they have in development. “This plays a really big role in leading into the main story we are telling across film and TV.”

The Authority: a movie based on a team of superheroes with rather extreme methods of protecting the planet that first originated in the late 1990s under an influential imprint known as Wildstorm, run by artist and now head of DC publishing, Jim Lee. “One of the things of the DCU is that it’s not just a story of heroes and villains,” said Gunn. “Not every film and TV show is going to be about good guy vs. bad guy, giant things from the sky comes and good guy wins. There are white hats, black hats and grey hats.” Added Safran: “They are kinda like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. They know that you want them on the wall. Or at least they believe that.”

Paradise Lost: The duo describe this HBO Max series as a Game of Thrones-style drama set on the all-female island that is Wonder Woman’s birthplace, Themyscira, filled with political intrigue and scheming between power players. It takes place before the events of the Wonder Woman films.

The Brave and the Bold: “This is the introduction of the DCU Batman,” said Gunn. “Of Bruce Wayne and also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch.” The movie will take inspiration from the now-classic Batman run written by Grant Morrison that introduced Batman to a son he never knew existed: a murderous tween raised by assassins. “It’s a very strange father-and-son story.”

And, importantly, it will feature a Batman not played by Robert Pattinson…

Booster Gold: an HBO Max series based on a unique and lower-tiered hero created in 1986. Safran said of the series, “It’s about a loser from the future who uses basic future technology to come back to today and pretend to be a superhero.” Gunn described it as “imposter syndrome as superhero.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: Taking its cues from the recent Tom King-written mini-series, this movie project promises to have a different take than what most think of when the idea of Superman’s cousin comes to mind. “We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth. She is much more hardcore and not the Supergirl we’re used to.”

Swamp Thing: a horror film that promises to close out the first part of the first chapter.

"'Can You Dig It' is about the Tao. The hook line I wrote in my dressing room on the set [of the television series in 1967]. The chords for the chorus I��d written in college, and [they] had just stuck with me. I hadn’t been able to do a thing with them until I was sittin’ there, just writin’ on a scrap of paper with ideas, and I wrote, 'Can you dig it?/Do you know/Would you care to let it show?’ Those three as a triplet — as opposed to a couplet. I just looked at them and [went], 'Wow!’ I grabbed a pencil and circled those three. They were part of a quatrain. I said, ‘Wait a minute. i don't understand why with the modern retellings of fairytales no one has done rapunzel? there's been a growing trend in wanting to have 'darker' fairytales, or to deconstruct or explore the original stories. but a rapunzel adaptation would be able to do this so well!

compared to other fairytale's and princesses, rapunzel isn't in many adaptations. think of how many different versions of cinderella, snow white, beauty and the beast or peter pan there are (obviously varying in quality lmao)

it's honestly endless!

but rapunzel has very few adaptations:

there are two major movies: 'barbie rapunzel' and 'tangled',

rapunzel is a character in the musical 'into the woods', which also became a movie

one major tv series which is the tangled spinoff 'rapunzel's tangled adventure'

even in stories that combine many fairytales, rapunzel is rarely in them - being a minor villain in 'shrek the third', and as a minor character appearing in one episode of 'once upon a time' in season 3, and then a different version of rapunzel appears in season 7 as a villain who is also lady tremaine (idk i didn't write it)

so there's a lot of potential to explore the story more, especially considering no adaptation has ever gone into the original story (into the woods would be the most similar, but the ending is quite different and rapunzel's not a major character in the musical) and that most versions of rapunzel so far have been for younger audiences.

even just the basic premise of the original story would fit a darker fairytale - a girl is raised in isolation, kept in a tower with no doors or ways to leave and her only company is the abusive woman who raises her, telling the girl she is being kept safe from the outside world. not to mention the other elements of the original story that would be interesting to see portrayed onscreen or be interpreted in different ways - a baby being bartered, rapunzel banished by the woman who raised her for being pregnant, the prince is pushed from the tower and is blinded by thorns, in some versions the witch ends up trapped in the tower herself, etc.

there's a lot of elements there that would make for a fascinating, darker version then what we've seen.

in some of the earlier concept art for tangled, rapunzel is portrayed as much more wild:

which makes a lot of sense!

barbie rapunzel, tangled and into the woods went for a route of rapunzel being sweet, sheltered and naive, which was fuelled by the witch's manipulations. depending on the version, the witch treats rapunzel as a daughter, an indentured servant, or a mix of the two.

but there could be a version of the story where rapunzel is left more to her own devices. or models herself more after the witch - the only person she's ever known. or where her learnt fear of the outside world leads her to want to protect herself against these dangers.

it would be also interesting (as well as pretty heartbreaking) to look into how rapunzel would feel after knowing that her entire life was a lie. that the woman she obeyed and cared about was using her and lied to her. how rapunzel would interact with a world she's never known, but always been taught to fear. and if the story has rapunzel and the prince separated for a time (some versions for years), what would rapunzel's life be like - pregnant and alone and in the world for the first time?

and then there's the prince!

he hears rapunzel singing in the woods and is captivated, but can't get up into her tower, but comes back to listen to her every day. and after he secretly watches how the witch gets into the tower, he calls for rapunzel to let down her hair and climbs up himself. and then they... fall in love and secretly get married.

that part is always glossed over.

it could be a really beautiful love story - a lonely soul who spends most of his time wandering alone in the woods basically hears a siren song and is determined to meet the singer. rapunzel, who's only ever known abuse, meets a genuinely kind person who wants to show her the world. he comes back every day with a strand of silk for rapunzel to make a ladder so that she can be free. after they're separated the now blind prince wanders in search of her, eventually hearing her singing again and that's how they're reunited.

it could also be quite terrifying - a man becomes obsessed with a girl he barely knows, tricks her into letting him into her home, she has no relationship experience (or experience with people at all) and is just as isolated with him as she is with the witch. they get married in secret and she gets pregnant and is punished by the witch for it.

it could even be some version of the two - the prince being captivated by her song, but also drawn to the one thing he can't have (the girl in the tower). but rapunzel being wild when he meets her and him having to slowly earn her trust and respect, and genuinely wanting her to be free of her tower prison.

any adaptation would have to be careful with the character of the witch though - often called gothel, to not fall into antisemetic tropes.

the article 'antisemetism in children's media' explains the harmful ways villains are often jewish-coded:

"[Mother Gothel] was originally drawn as an elegant caucasian looking woman, only to be edited to look like a stereotypical Ashkenazi Jew, presumably as a means to appear more “evil”. Gothel is animated with a hooked nose, and coarse, black curly hair – all aspects commonly seen in antisemetic caricatures. Though these features on a villain alone are shocking enough, what is most terrifying about Gothel’s portrayal is the obvious use of Blood Libel tropes. This can be described as a false belief that Jews kidnap and murder young Christian children in order to perform religious rituals (often associated with Manischewitz wine and matzah). Sound familiar? That’s because it is thinly veiled in Gothel’s portrayal. In Tangled, the main character Rapunzel is portrayed as a young innocent white girl, who is kidnapped by the Jewish villain, who uses Rapunzel’s magical essence to make herself appear younger. What is the laziest attempt at villainizing Jews in this character, and possibly the most hurtful however, is that Gothel is a common jewish surname."

it's awful, and unfortunately something that's been present in many iterations of gothel over the years (as well as other fairytales and witch caricatures)

a solution to this is to not having the witch be jewish coded. her name doesn't have to be gothel, she does not have to have stereotypical or exaggerated features, and rapunzel doesn't even have to be white

but having a focus be on the witch and her relationship to rapunzel is key - because unlike many other fairytale villains, the witch raises rapunzel. in many versions she's the only human contact rapunzel has ever had, or in the versions where rapunzel is locked in the tower as a pre-teen, the witch is the only person she's seen in many years.

the witch's motivations for locking rapunzel away are also important for their relationship and the story:

the original fairytale and into the woods has the witch want to punish her neighbour for stealing from her garden, and wanting a child of her own

barbie rapunzel has a twist on this, gothel was in love with king wilhelm, and when he did not return her love, she kidnapped his daughter rapunzel and framed the neighbouring kingdom, causing the two to go to war.

tangled has gothel using a magic flower for eternal youth, but after the kingdom uses the flower to save the queen & unborn princess, gothel kidnaps the baby in order to stay alive and keep the magic now in rapunzel for herself

Another portrayal of her motivations:

"Many scholars have interpreted "Maiden in the Tower" stories, which Rapunzel is a part of, as a metaphor for the protection of young women from pre-marital relationships by overzealous guardians.[23] Scholars have drawn comparisons of the confinement of Rapunzel in her tower to that of a convent, where women's lives were highly controlled and they lived in exclusion from outsiders.[3]"

this would be a really interesting approach for the character that hasn't been done before. someone who truly believes that she is protecting the child, but is really the one doing all the damage. having the character be inspired by nuns/convents would also work well, as a lot of the techniques gothel uses line up with abusive nuns - isolation, guilt, emotional/physical abuse, and the treatment of rapunzel after the witch finds out she's pregnant. it also flips the head on the often antisemetic coding of the witch

depending on the version made there are a lot of possibilities for endings:

rapunzel having to brave the world alone and pregnant

rapunzel and the prince being reunited - but have days, weeks, months or years gone by? do they ever meet again?

meeting the prince again going differently if it's the terrifying version where he was using rapunzel just like the witch, only in a different way. maybe he wants nothing to do with her or the babies, maybe he pretends they never met at all. how would rapunzel's story change then?

is rapunzel ever reunited with her birth parents? does she want to be?

the ending could be darker, bittersweet, or end on an optimistic note

all this to say that rapunzel is a story with so much potential, and i would love to see it brought to life in more ways - with different genres or interpretations and taking more from the original story.

with the amount of random, unnecessary remakes that are being made - wouldn't a familiar fairytale told in a new way be more interesting?
