Like many of us, discovering our escape is often how we uncover our true selves, as untouched and genuine as we could possibly be. For Silveira, it was no different. “In those worlds, I would always be a boy,” he says. “And I remember that being part of my story right from the get-go. I didn’t have friends when I was a kid, and if I did, I always played by myself. And my presentation was male. I was being a boy.” For some reason, this reminds me of one of the lyrics to ‘Not Your Boy’ as Silveira, with vocals as sultry and heartbreaking as ever, sings: “Everything’s profound / When you are on a cloud / Riddled by this crowd / That just can’t feel me / When the darkness disappears / The only thing inside that can see / Is in the lie that tells me / I’ve been dreaming / Am I dreaming?” [...] Finding your way through the maze of identity is challenging enough, but doing it in the public eye adds another level of complexity. This was particularly true for Silveira, who already had a well-established audience with fixed ideas about who he was at the time. “When I started transitioning physically, I lost a very diehard and loyal audience of mainly cis-gendered females, and it was this double impact that it had on me, which was, ‘Oh, I knew that nobody was seeing me as being a real man. Because even though I was identifying as Lucas, and as he/him, my presentation to them was still seen as being a cis-gendered female.'” Continuing, Silveira adds: “I even had lesbians call me ‘she’, and I’d be like, ‘it’s actually ‘he”. So, it was really not ever taken seriously. So, what ended up happening was not only the fallout of me, but it was the understanding that I’d never been very validated in that aspect. It was the loss of my family. And it was pretty heartbreaking.” However, despite finding facets of supporters in certain places, even the most seemingly accepting parts of the music industry didn’t feel very safe. “I went from being out very privately to all of a sudden being a signed band and being on tours with Cyndi Lauper, The B-52’s, and Joan Jett, and people were talking about my trans-ness and asking me all these questions, and I was just getting to know myself.” “That didn’t go so well with a lot of trans folks,” he continues. “At the time, there was no non-binary movement, so what ended up happening was I also got flack from the trans community for not being a real man. And I wasn’t a real trans person because if I was, I would have chosen hormones and my presentation and my transition physically over my music career.”

Step Up Your Character Game: Character Building Through Repeated Actions
Tumblr media
There are many ways to establish character building in your writing. NaNo Participant Kathryn A. Patterson talks about how you can use repetition of certain actions to show off your characters’ personalities! I find inspiration for my writing in the usual places: podcasts, the dog park, alien encounters. This year I found a nugget in, of all places, a book about how to build habits.
In Atomic Habits, James Clear discusses the word identity. He traces the origins of the word back to two Latin words:
   • essentitas: which means the essential of something, being    • identitum: which means repeatedly
Identity translates literally into “repeatedly being”.
How does this affect my writing? Two words: character building.
A character is more than a physical description and clothes. A character needs personality, affectations, mannerisms, and other less tangible attributes. However, writing something like “Sam is a kind and warm-hearted person” falls squarely into the tell-not-show category.
Using the idea of “repeatedly being”, an author can show who a character is through their actions and habits as well as their dialogue. A character who habitually hosts dinners for their friends comes across as social and nice. Someone who texts while driving is thoughtless and selfish. By having your characters repeat specific actions, you show the audience who that character is.
For example, Patricia Briggs has written a series of books around her protagonist, Mercy Thompson. Mercy doesn’t take attitude or crap from anyone, but she also is kind-hearted and smart. The readers learn this from how Mercy gets revenge on people who have done something wrong to her. The revenge is never physically damaging, but also completely memorable. On one occasion, Mercy puts blue dye into someone’s shampoo. Even though she knows the dye wear off eventually, the person is very vain, so it works fabulously as revenge.
Readers also learn about Mercy through her baking. Mercy loves baking with chocolate, and she makes cookies and brownies for her people on a regular basis. The author never outright says: “Mercy shows people that she cares about them through her baking.” Instead, the act of baking speaks for itself.
When I start a new writing project, I use a character template for each of my main characters. There, I record all the details about that character. I started this to help with consistency within a story and within a story universe. But I also use the templates to help me define my characters.
After reading Atomic Habits, I changed my character template to include three new fields:
   • Habits: a record of important repeated behaviors    • Quirks: a catalog of the character’s peculiarities    • Behavior Patterns: a description of how the character acts or reacts in specific situations
Not every character gets an entry in every field, but I list the fields so I have a place to put the relevant information.
In preparation for NaNoWriMo, I fill out character templates for all the major people in my story. I use the template to construct the character’s personality, tone of voice, and expected behaviors. That makes it much, much easier to write when November 1 rolls around.
Tumblr media
Kathryn A. Patterson lives in a crooked house on a crooked road. Alas, she is allergic to cats so she does not own a crooked cat. She lives in a marvelous world, filled with vampires, werewolves, and magic - oh, my! But she pretends to live in a dull, boring world filled with post offices, taxes, and calculators. It makes her family happier when she pretends. You will find her writing like a fiend during November on every day that ends in a "y".
Her template can be found here. This template is flexible. For example, her templates for her vampire universe includes fields for characters' vampire house affiliation. For her sci-fi novels, she adds fields for home planet and other related info. Photo by Marissa Grootes on Unsplash

NCIS: Hawai’i just started Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) on quite the journey we can’t wait to see play out: one involving her mother.
While tracking down an elite team of Marines, Jane is injured and seemingly takes refuge in a cabin with a woman living out in the jungle. But then that woman starts asking questions about the case—using details she couldn’t know—and Jane asks her why she lives in the woods. So she’d find her, the woman says, then seemingly shoots her. That’s when Jane opens her eyes to find herself alone in the cabin. That’s something that stays with her after, then when she gets home, Jane realizes the woman she saw in her head in the cabin was her mother, looking the same way she did the day she abandoned her. It’s a sign “our story’s not over yet,” she realizes.
NCIS: LA star Daniela Ruah directed the episode and shares that behind the scenes, there was a very careful approach to those scenes—including when it came to how Jane looks in them.
“We even made the choice, for example, that world when she goes into the cabin, that’s her perception of the world, and she hasn’t seen herself in the mirror. So if you’ll notice, she doesn’t even have a cut on her head. But then when we come out and see that she’s alone in the cabin, she does have a cut on her head because that’s the reality and she can’t see herself, so therefore she doesn’t see the blood. Therefore it’s not there in her world that she’s creating in that moment,” Ruah tells TV Insider.
Tumblr media
Karen Neal / CBS
“It was a fine line between tipping your hand too soon and making it so weird that the audience would be like, ‘This doesn’t seem right. This is probably a flashback, or this is probably something in our head,'” Ruah continues. “So we had to be careful to shoot it as normally as possible without tipping our hand. But then the way that the scenes were written, there’s this amazing crescendo of weirdness. It just gets weirder and weirder every time we go back to the cabin, and it just allowed for me to do something different, especially when Mom is starting to really question her about the guy in the woods, and she’s like, ‘How do you know about the guy in the woods? How is that even something you know about?’ And I had them speak into camera so that it’s just that she’s really speaking into her soul.”
The director says those were scenes—which she calls “incredible”—that were “heavily discussed” when it came to certain decisions, including how to present this version of Jane’s mother. “It’s really, really important, the sense of, maybe her mother saw her as a bother, and so that’s how she perceived this woman who opens the door and she’s like, ‘I don’t want you here. I want you to leave,'” explains Ruah. “Because maybe that’s the sensation she feels of why maybe her mother left, ‘Was I a bother to my mother?’ Whether those things are true or not for that character, those are the things that we had to discuss. The showrunners are still are exploring this journey for Jane Tennant, so there aren’t a whole lot of concrete answers. So I just had to figure out what made sense for this episode and leave enough open that they can keep building on it.”
That’s not the only part of the episode that isn’t what it first appears to be: The identity of the bad guy is, as well. And that’s part of what excited Ruah as a director. The murder of a Marine from an elite team during a training exercise brings the team into the jungle; as more Marines are murdered, the agents soon realize that the real bad guys are those being killed off, after assaulting and killing a woman. And it wasn’t their first time doing so.
“The case itself really takes you in one direction, and then the episode about three quarters in kind of flips on its head and you’re like, ‘Oh gosh, no. The guy that we think is a bad guy turns out he’s actually a good guy solving things in the wrong way, but he’s a good guy.’ I always love giving the audience who’s watching the episode this feeling of, ‘I see where the motivation is for this character, but is it right or wrong to be killing these bad guys?'” Ruah shares. “It’s a hard moral episode to watch because of that, but at the same time, once you find out what the bad guys did, you’re just like, ‘Oh, crush them.’ So you take the audience on a journey in this episode, for sure.”

What do you think about Namjoon saying 'I wanna touch you I wanna feel you'? Isn't that a bit creepy?
Ask 2:
BPP😭
It was so heartbreaking to watch NJ be emotional while telling us that they can’t be their usual straightforward selves at the moment, but they will soon be able to tell us a lot more after everything has been decided.
I can’t imagine how much pressure and stress they’re under right now…
I hope everything will work out in their favor in the long run.
**
Hi Anon(s),
I found it funny how I got these asks around the same time, about the same subject, and yet the perceptions by both anons seem worlds apart lmao.
Anon 1, I can totally understand why you might feel uncomfortable hearing Namjoon's speech, but I'm going to spend some time here talking about why exactly your question pisses me off, though you likely meant nothing bad from asking it, and at the end I'll explain why I'm thankful you asked it.
Generally speaking here, one pet peeve I have with native English speakers and/or white people who take an interest in k-pop or in another culture, is how casually ignorant they can sometimes be and when corrected, I've observed many just dismiss it as not a big deal or 'identity politics'.
Lol.
It's not racist that a native English speaker who is non-POC has no idea what code-switching is and what it can look like, but if you've taken an interest in an industry where majority of the people speak English as a second language, which then impacts how they apply certain words (think of how Jungkook titled My You, even after he acknowledged it's not grammatically correct), then some kind of self-awareness is sorely needed.
Code-switching is not just a function of language but of culture. Think of any Black person you know, find them and ask them if they have a 'white' or 'office' speaking voice and if they're careful of what words to use to a white audience. Everything from the type of words used, to the tone or accent, to even posture, changes sometimes when non-white/native speakers switch into that language. And this is just for Black people in America who have spoken English all their lives. Imagine for a moment what it is like for a Korean. Imagine what it's like for a Korean who is mostly self-taught in another language.
I was drafting this response when a moot also talked about this on Twitter, so rather than continue responding to Anon 1 (this subject is very personal for me and the more I talk about it, the more direct I'll be, though Anon 1 was likely just asking out of curiosity), I'll just link to a fuller explanation of what happened with Namjoon's speech here, (end of thread to read upwards linked here too). If any of those explanations seem like too much of a stretch, feel free to come back here with more questions if you have them. :)
*
The curious thing is, BTS have made these sort of cringe missteps when speaking in Japanese, but Japanese speakers don't immediately jump to assuming the worst (like assuming Joon means to sexually assault children), nor do Japanese speakers mock them for using words in an odd way. No, that's a reaction I've only observed in English speakers who are almost always white. And in a sense I don't blame them. After all, it's 2022 - anybody with an international presence should speak and use English the way native speakers do. Apparently. Whatever your feelings about the British monarchy, the fact remains that we live in a world shaped by their centuries of imperialism and colonialism. It bleeds into most things, including subtle expectations like this that most of the time is invisible to English speakers/Western people.
Oh, and then there's the typical hate for Namjoon k-pop stans are notorious for lmao. He's an easy target, and k-pop stans operate on that kind of frequency.
Anon 1, thank you for asking your question. Because honestly, your question/reaction is completely understandable and I thoroughly sympathize, but I can recognize that it can be also borne of ignorance. The great thing about ignorance is that it can be quickly tossed. All one has to do is ask a question, and they'll be informed of other perspectives which hopefully expand the views of all involved. I'm also thankful you asked your question because as I said above, this is something personal to me given my background and where I've lived most of my life. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say my mind on this, because this is something that will keep coming up the more k-pop (and BTS) move into the international spotlight.
**
To Anon in Ask 2, I caught that too and honestly my heart feels a bit heavy for them. I have some theories on what his words could mean, but October 13th to 15th is only a few days away. The best thing at this point is to live in the moment, live with them in the moment, have a good time during Jimin's birthday and the concert, and trust that these adult men who have navigated waters not known to anyone like them before, will continue to do what is right for them.

Why and when do we sing?
Voice is our instrument to communicate with the others and it can be trained for whatever we need. Anyone can sing. Singing means an amusing way to say how you are feeling (1). Different types of singing come out of of manipulating the voice in a different way. How you express it doesn´t matter, there are artists who sing through almost speaking the melody such singer-songwriters or either yelling it like in deep metal or underground music, or maybe using your soft palate and your head voice as a resonance box like opera singers, those are different ways of expression through singing.
Voice is a fingerprint of us, our id card when it comes to communicating with others, it is our personality reflex and it is unique. Have you ever drawn your attention to your own voice when you are speaking to yourself? Is it not different than when we are chatting with other people? There is a change in our voice when we are alone or with trusted people than when we are in community. The level of communication changes, so does our voice. If you need to express an idea and you are trying to reach the majority of your audience, you need to be clear in your words and ways to express yourself. Let´s include a melody in this equation and as a result you get a piece of music, let´s call it song. In songs, we will find symbolism like in poetry, and that is the composer´s and singer´s identity. It is the reflex of that identity what makes us sing that certain song and not any other.
Since we get together to share and celebrate or to moan and whine sometimes too, we have developed a “common mindfulness” with our voices greater that ourselves when we sing altogether. It looks like we have a real need to be a part of that “consciousness flow” we develop at the moment we gather to share whatsoever. Thanks to this need, we are aware of synergies nowadays. That “thing” that happens when the result of our work is much more elevated and complete than we would have reached if that task would have been made separately. Now take this concept to a stage, with musicians, singers and a choir on it, playing music. No matter if you are performing or attending as a listener, synergies will happen in any direction since we are gathering.
Since the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, the sense of community gets strengthened by melodies when attending a concert or any other music event. This same logic works with choirs (2). The Greeks created the first known choral competition in the 5th century BC (3). The choral tradition was created in Europe, Ethiopia and Egypt starting off in the fourth century AC (4), to remember important messages and provide togetherness in what was going on at that present time. Singing brings us to the present moment, it can be seen as another way of mindfulness, though much more powerful.  When voices are raised together at the very same time, they turn into a giant one soul. Mistakes or mistuning can´t narrowly be noticed when we sing together at the same time. Choirs can be addictive because they complement each voice among them, and they flow with the melody, expressing themselves, telling us something, and reminding us we can join. There are choirs in every song, in every melody, some are instrumental and we end up humming them, others have letters we can paraphrase. They work anyway, since there is no judgement, just joy. Haven´t you noticed how nice to see somebody on the street humming a song while walking or singing inside a car? Multiply that by 30 people doing that same thing at the same moment.
But why do we sing and when? Singing, like practicing sports or any other physical activity, triggers the production of endorphins, oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine hormones (5, 9), regulating and reinforcing the feeling of rewards and pleasure. It feels good when practicing. It let us communicate and be. Since it feels good and we use music and singing to gather and express ourselves, then, it´s when singing becomes a social necessity. We have been using music and singing in a wide variety of biological and social situations (6). We have sung on hunting drives, to bond and calm our babies, to celebrate rites, to attract or flirt on a potential mate (7) or to let out something that we cannot express with words because it is too intense to express otherwise. Hence, singing is beneficial to anyone, not just professional singers. Singing, humming or “nananaing” improves human´s quality of life by lowering down anxiety and regulating emotions chemically while expressing ourselves.
We can find many melodies in nature, tree leaves sounding while wind blows swaying them, chirping birds in spring or autumn, or crickets and croaking frogs singing together on a pond at night, for instance. We are also in this Planet and we have our own way to sing too. We have created singing, choruses and music like insects and animal sounds to communicate. Pre-historic humans probably started to imitate nature sounds.  Many experts think that voice is the original instrument, and singing the original way to communicate. Some of the first songs we know are written in early musical notation and dated from nearly 6.000 years in Mesopotamia and Ancient Greek cultures. Some other early ceremonial and clan songs have been found in Australia. They are dated over 10.000 years ago and they were used to remember directions or stories (4).
Singing brings and bonds us together in a kind and amusing way. It reminds us that we do better together. If you want to improve your mental and physical well-being (10), live happier and longer (8) singing is one of the healthiest ways to achieve it.
Thanks for smiling. Enjoy the soirée.
