The Report Card – Fantasy High Junior Year Ep 3 Fast Times at Fantasy High
Welcome back to Fantasy High! It’s a very exciting episode because something that we rarely see in this show about high schoolers studying at an adventuring academy is happening: The Bad Kids are actually going to class.
But first, they have to get to school. Riz, unsurprisingly, arrives first. On a big old 30 Investigation roll (+11 to a 19), overnight he did a deep dive into what everyone needs to do to get into a good college. Fig is actually doing great. If she would just go to her classes, she’d be fine. Kristen on the other hand is in serious trouble seeing as allowing your god to die is pretty much an auto-fail for a cleric. Fabian and Gorgug are both solid students with good extracurriculars. Their main hurdle is going to be the MCAT–the Multiclass Achievement Test. In order to multiclass, you need to get permission from your current advisor and pass the test. Then you can take 3/4 of each track for a 150% course load. And then, of course, he and Adaine are the party nerds so they’re doing great. They could maybe add some extracurriculars but they’re model students.
RIz also has done some research about possible college options: Astral State University (where they visited in the one shot), CUS Dabus (in the City of Doors), Bastion City University (who are doing big, world changing stuff), the Society of Shadows (the rogues only group that forces you to leave your life and friends behind that Penny Luckstone refused to join in The Seven), and–most hilarious but also saddest–Lord Salazar Edge's College of Lone Adventurers (which we learn in the AP was a Murph pitch, lol).
Back at Mordred, Adaine is doing her best to get her less studious friends up and ready for school, going as far as casting Friends on them to get them in the car. Fig willingly fails and Kristen–who really wants to be convinced–sets the DC at 10 and gives Adaine the Help action. Before they get to the car, Lydia (Ragh’s awesome mom) slaps a toxic looking blue energy drink from Kristen’s hands and gives them all full trash bags full of food for lunch (she’s used to feeding half-orc athlete Barb Ragh, not three spellcasters).
Jawbone loads them in the car and, on the way to school, they hear the song of the summer which is this emo anthem. When they meet Riz, he’s super excited to see everyone and show them their dossiers. He even made one for Adaine just for fun even though she doesn’t need any help and she loves it. What she (and Riz) don’t love however is Fig’s new school plan which, as we learned last week, is to enroll in something other than bard classes and then go to her bard classes (since a part of her isn’t going because she has chronic Stick-It-To-The-Man-Itis). Riz and Adaine try to figure out if they can gaslight Fig into going to her classes or hack the system somehow.
Back at the Thistlespring tree, Gorgug is doing some last minute pre-school work: creating his homunculus (which is kind of like an artificer’s familiar). It’s a hastily made archaeopteryx (flying dino thing, if you know Pokemon, think Archeops) that’s light on the feathers. He accidentally names it Cloaca (a birds multipurpose excrement chute) which his parents love because it’s spreading awareness of non-traditional bodies. Then they launch into a story about mermaid reproduction that I’m not gonna get into because not even Gorgug wanted to hear it. He’s clearly anxious about his skills because he feels his parents disapprove of the bird even though they’ve never been anything other than 200% supportive of him in their lives.
He gets a ride to school and his friends meet Cloaca, who he nicknames Chloe–the name I’ll be using even though the Bad Kids of course will exclusively call it Cloaca. Riz hands Gorgug his file which he reviews along with the letters from his parents. It’s a lot of the same info except that one of the letters is a rejection re: Multiclassing with a note to talk to his advisor (Porter, the Barb teacher who Fig hates).
Fabian shows up, starving and shabbily dressed without Cathilda to take care of him–she’s still in Leviathan. The girls share their trash bag food with him which he wolfs down gratefully. (When he mentions his parents are away, Fig seems surprised that Gilear left. Interesting to note for future eps because that feels out of character for their relationship). Anyway, he mistakes Chloe for a piece of trash because is it really the first day of school if Fabian doesn’t insult Gorgug (accidentally this time. progress!) and then the bell rings. As it does, the Bad Kids look around and realize something strange: they’re Juniors now. That means more than half the kids here are younger than them now. They’re not the Freshmen they once were.
The Sorc Prof (Jace Stardiamond) is filling in as VP while Gilear is away and as he makes an announcement on the intercom, Fig almost falls into an open construction pit (a SECOND construction based incident) but is saved when she’s hit with an armful of gym equipment instead. Put that on the Faeth luck swap conspiracy board. Anyway, Jace also says that Aguefort is gonna be out so they have a new Principal: Emergency Backup Interim Principal Grix. The Bad Kids have never heard of this guy before.
In the spot where they saw Dane and Penelope campaigning to bring back Prom Court their first year, the Bad Kids now see a table for Student Gov manned by Jawbone and a minotaur student he seems to know: Mazey Phaedra–a senior and the student body prez. She’s also based on a Scottish Highland cow which isn’t important to the story but it is important to me because those cows are super cute. Riz suggests they sign up so they go talk to Mazey who seems cool: She thanks them for saving the world, she knows Ayda, and Fabian clocks later that she’s a dancer bard. All green flags.
After indulging Fabian’s ego for a bit, the squad encourages Kristen to go for President. Before she can though, she’s beaten to the punch by a halfling student with major Tracy Flick energy who introduces herself as Kipperlily Copperkettle. Kristen immediately shoots back with, “What are you, four different dogs?” which is maybe the funniest thing a Bad Kid has ever said. The Bad Kids hate her vibes on sight but Kristen especially is full aggro. Riz notices that she’s wearing a pin of a rat’s butt being grinded between two gears and when asked about it, she says it’s Ratgrinders pin–Ratgrinders being the name of her adventuring party. They ask who else is in her party and she points out Reuben–an emo, gnomish bard who is signing autographs because he’s the one who wrote the song they were listening to on the way to school (before Kristen changed it to a health and wellness podcast).
Kipperlily (who I’m gonna call KP) is told that she can sign up but she has to find time to campaign outside of her classes. She says that won’t be a problem because she’s already aced Junior Year and she slides over an envelope to Jawbone to prove it. Apparently, the way Rogue classes work here is that the students find clues and puzzles throughout the school left by the professor but they’ve never actually met them. If a student is able to find the Rogue professor, they automatically get an A for the year and, apparently, KP did just that.
Paperwork in order, KP is about to leave but Fig stops her to ask what her platform is. Her answer: “Equality, equanimity, and fairness under the rules. In the past, there has been an eccentricity to the bureaucratic and administrative decisions of the Aguefort Adventuring Academy that has favored some students over others. Very nice to meet you guys.”
As she leaves, they hate her even more.
Adaine tries out a new trick she has which allows her to see into the ethereal plane. She sees a lot of Aguefort’s wards but also the fact that the wards are porous enough to let in ghosts because one of the professors is a ghost, though they don’t know which one. She suggests to Riz that maybe the Rogue prof is a ghost. She also sees some ghost steaks in the fridge, presumably belonging to the ghost prof (btw: steak for lunch at a high school seems wild, lol).
At this point, Fabian notices Mazey’s dancing shoes (Badidas of course) and clocks that she’s a dancer bard. He talks to her about how he’s looking to multiclass and she hooks him up with a note to give to the dance class professor (Terpsicore Skullcleaver) that says he’s a good kid. She also tells him that Jem Peppercorn (the absolute legend who stayed in the gym eating for the whole Goldenhoard fight) graduated last year and he had the party house which means there’s an opening for a new party house. And Fabian has a very big, very fancy, very empty house. Kristen does an Insight check and gets a Nat 20 to clock that yeah, there’s a little bit of a flirty vibe going on. So of course, she uses Thaumaturgy to create tremors–a move I was extremely confused about at first blush but I think she was using to give Fabian an excuse to hold her or something. Clearly, she’s a more attentive Wingwoman than she is a Saint.
Anyway, conversation finished, they go to the Auditorium where Jace announced Principal Grix wanted to give a speech. Grix is a gold, warforged spellcaster with a ball comprising his lower half instead of legs. Apparently, he was created by Arthur Aguefort to take his place while he’s on vacay. He speaks in a stilted, robotic manner and gives a speech parallel to Aguefort’s day one speech about what an Adventurer is. But instead of the rambly, unhinged answer Aguefort gave, he simply gives the Dictionary definition: One who goes on adventures. And then he starts going off about order, bureaucracy, and rules.
The Bad Kids are taken aback–even rules gremlin Riz.On a 27 to clock whether he’s been hacked (because she can’t believe Aguefort would make a robot that acted like this) Adaine sees Grix steepling his fingers and saying “Perfect order” which isn’t conclusive but is def troubling! They start raising their hands and asking Jace questions about if they really have to follow rules in a hard way this year–it still is Aguefort after all–but Grix cuts in and says that the backtalk he’s getting is exactly the problem. He casts Time Stop (a 9th level spell) and the entire auditorium finds themselves in the hall, in a single file line, ten minutes before class is about to begin. Not a great start to the year! And on a dirty 20, Kristen doesn’t see KP anywhere. Suspicious!
Riz tells Fabian and Gorgug about any extra MCAT stuff they don’t already know. He also tells the group about the Frosty Folk Festival and Gorgug mentions that his parents are hosting. Fig says she wants to maybe try out some of her new songs there…once she’s written them. Fabian asks if they can take a break from hardcore Bad Kid stuff this semester and Kristen says that’s a good point because she has a campaign to focus on. Fig declares herself secret service because, of course she does. She also announces her plan to go to Bard classes…but disguised as a new persona (Tiny Emo Girlie: Wanda Childa) so she can befriend and spy on Reuben. Riz and Adaine are at the end of their collective rope.
With his free time before the bell rings, Gorgug wants to talk to Porter to sort out the MCAT stuff. Porter lays it out for him. He thinks Gorgug has amazing, raw, natural talent and he uses his rage in a really noble way to protect his friends. But he hasn't seen him reach his full destructive potential and he’s not impressed that he defeated the Night Yorb will tools and “magic” instead of rage. He would be fine if Gorgug wanted to get some Fighter levels with Ms. Jones or something else that would dovetail nicely with Barb classes, but as of now, he hasn’t seen what he needs to see to think that Artificing classes would do anything but steal focus. Gorgug can of course quit the Barb track and move to Artificing, but Porter is not giving his approval.
Meanwhile, Fabian is having a much less hostile meeting with Terpsicore (after an accidental detour to Adaine’s wizard class because he trusted Fig–who’s never been to bard class–to give him directions). Terps is this tiny (5 ft 3in) Half-Orc with crazy, hyper positive, aerobics grandma energy who immediately breaks down Fabian’s cool guy jock persona and gets him into a dance, jam sesh with her that moves through different styles of dance and music. I can’t do this scene justice, you have to watch it. Her “Uh-oh, uh-oh! Uh-oh, uh-oh! A challenger approaches!” tells you everything you need to know about her.
By the end of the dance, Fabian has fully embraced his weird art kid energy and Terps has approved Fabian for multiclassing. It’s looking like all sunshine and roses for Fabian until Terps tells him that if he’s gonna make this multiclass thing work, he needs to be really serious. Lots of rest. Lots of healthy food. And no parties. Uh-oh indeed.
Next up, we turn our attention back to Riz who’s still in the hall and tries to steal the envelope KP turned in to Jawbone to get some info about the Rogue prof. Jawbone catches him and is good natured about it but won’t let him have the envelope: not for moral reasons so much as because a good rogue has to earn it by not getting caught.
Riz asks about KP and Jawbone says she’s a good kid but kinda Type A. He asks Riz if he’s getting some “I’m in the picture and I don’t like it” energy from her and Riz denies it. Jawbone decides to give him a little bit of a hint re: the Prof and says that KP technically didn’t find the prof. The prof found KP. But he won’t say more and he would appreciate him not saying where he got the info. The main reason he’s giving the info at all is because KP was snooping and heard him talking about Kristen’s god dying. She then asked Jawbone a bunch of questions about Kristen which he answered so he figured fair’s fair with regard to giving Riz some info about her. Riz is troubled. Jawbone tells Riz that they’re due for a heart to heart but Riz says he’s good and he’s stressed but stress is good. Yikes!
Kristen is also still in the hall and finally properly signs up for class president but, as she does, she hears some familiar voices: it’s her parents, dropping her younger brother Bucky off for his first day at Aguefort. She has serious deja vu as they’re saying the same “Don’t mix with the weirdos” stuff they said to her on her first day. Kristen fails a Wisdom save and is deeply affected by watching her parents basically bullying her younger brother who she hasn’t seen in a good bit now. The last time she had any contact with them it was just to give them her dragon gold and that was over the phone.  She sees that her not being in the household to shield her brothers from her parents has led to them having to take all that parental abuse and pressure alone. She goes over to confront them feeling hot under the collar and Riz senses a crackle of something in her aura.
Cass chimes in, thinking she’s been summoned, and asks if it’s a good time for them to talk and Kristen snaps at her that OBVIOUSLY it’s not a good time. Kristen feels a spasm in her body and, for the first time, Cass snaps back at her: "Fine! I can make my own people to talk to!“ Deeply concerning, but we’ll come back to that. For now, we follow Kristen as she reaches her parents and brother. Bucky immediately goes in for the hug and seems very happy to see her. Her parents, not so much and the feeling is mutual. “Second time’s the charm, hopefully” they say, tacitly deeming her a failure. She pretends to be directing traffic so she can hustle them out the door ASAP and gets a Nat 20 to do so (rolling with advantage for reasons Brennan doesn’t expound on). Bucky says he wants to talk to Kristen about something but he’s late so can they meet up after class? She says sure thing and he runs off, his longsword trailing after him.
Kristen is left alone with her parents and it’s a bit of a standoff. Her mom asks how she’s going and seems to genuinely want to know to some degree but it’s still mainly jabs about her lifestyle and choices and leaving the church. Her dad especially comes down hard on her for leaving Helio without a chosen one and becoming a cleric to a night goddess right before they were struck with four months of night which, admittedly, is a fair thing to have questions about. But Kristen has died and come back from the dead. If that can’t keep her down, her parents certainly can’t. She pirouettes away from the conversation and heads to class (because she may not be worried about her parents but she is worried about what Cass said to her).
We hop over to the second nerd of the party, Adaine, who’s in wizard classes with Professor Tiberia Runestaff who Brennan says has “Evil Lucille Bluth” energy (which is different from regular Lucille Bluth how?). She’s a friend of Aguefort’s from the Mountains of Chaos and Adaine wants to impress her so so bad.
She starts off her lesson by saying that this year is the weed out year. This is the year that separates the paltry magicians from the truly great casters. Then, she starts listing out the materials they need for this week’s castings–a list that includes TEN BARRELS OF DIAMONDS. For ONE WEEK. Adaine may come from money but she doesn’t have access to any of that money right now. She raises her hand to ask if there’s any way she could borrow some diamonds from the school or something and basically gets a harsh, “That sounds like a you problem” kind of response that she shrinks back from. Tiberia continues to list the ridiculously expensive materials needed to continue on and Adaine knows that she can’t ask Jawbone for any of this. She resolves to call Aelwyn for help during lunch.
We then move on to a Fantasy High first: Fig going to class! Although she’s not going as herself. She’s disguised as her alter ego Wanda Childa. The professor (Lucilla Lullaby who is some kind of chill Eladrin) seems to perhaps think she recognizes her before she sits down next to Reuben. She charms him by smelling of peach schnapps and cigarettes and they have a flirty emo-off before Lucilla points out that she’s 100% not on the roster and, despite the fact that it doesn’t always seem like it, this is a school with rules. This year especially! She leaves, but as she lingers to give Reuben one last look (and sniff) she notices that he has a Ratgrinder tattoo that matches KP’s pin.
As she exits Lucilla is making a call on her crystal and there’s a good chance it’s connected to the encounter Fig has when she gets to the hall. Jace Stardiamond is leading an eagle aarakocra Council of Chosen agent (think FBI) who is investigating truancy in the area and calls Fig by name–well by pseudonym anyway. He is incidentally also looking into the disappearance of Hilda Hilda. Sensing her chickens are finally coming home to roost, Fig gives a weak lie about not knowing how schools work and skateboards away, using Cutting Words to prevent Agent Clark’s attack of opportunity on her. He vows to find out who she is as she makes her escape.
Proving you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it go to bard class, Fig goes outside to spy on her class through the window instead of attending because she thought Lucilla actually seemed pretty cool. She doesn’t hide well enough though and Lucilla spots her through the window. She’s shocked to see Fig for the first time in two years and welcomes her in like she’s the prodigal son. Fig asks if it would be weird for her to attend. Lucilla assures her that it’s the opposite of weird and, in fact, mandatory.
She settles in for her first day of bard class–this semester and ever–but out of the corner of her eye, she notices a sneering Rebuen texting someone. It’s Lola Embers. Looks like they’re signed to the same label.
Finally, we hop to Kristen who’s headed to cleric class with Professor Yolanda Badgood (a wispy air genasi). Before class even starts she tells Kristen to meet her after class. We timeskip to that meeting and, like many others in this ep, she thanks Kristen for saving the world. But she has a followup question: How did she do it when her god is dead? Kristen says she has a lot going on with her estranged parents she just saw and her scattered mind and her feeling like the stairs are disappearing behind her as she climbs. She has to update her god in the files and her address for that matter because, as we learned when she talked to her parents, all her mail is still getting sent to her old address. Her professor sincerely asks her how she’s feeling and Kristen says she’s fine but asks if there’s some kind of test she can take that will tell her what god is right for her. Her professor is like, “Didn’t you just say you had a new god???” But Kristen feels so much pressure with Cass and she mainly feels annoyed by her presence. Professor Badgood says that she’s allowed to change her god as much as she wants–she herself gave up an active relationship with a divinity so she can be kind of an interfaith minister to all her students. And she says that all faiths are trying to capture a piece of the truth–even the out there ones with evil gods and such. She recommends that Kristen spend a week earnestly trying to connect with Cass and if she still feels like she wants to split she can go from there.
Kristen has a followup question: What do you do when your god says, "Fine, I'll- I'll make new followers"? Badgood seems taken aback, and she’s even more so when Kristen says she’s been rude to her god. Kristen asks if she should apologize and Professor Badgood gives her the most gracious version of, “Duh, obviously” a person can manage. She directs Kristen to one of the million prayer rooms in the class so she and Cass can talk.
Kristen actually takes this seriously–or at least more seriously than she takes most things. She clears her mind and meditates until she finds herself in the forest of Sylvaire where Cassandra is crying to herself. A bright moon that would erase any shadow or doubt encroaches. When Kristen tries to touch Cass’s shoulder, the god flinches away and sobs that Craig–her only other follower–has joined the Wolfsong Revival. Tracker’s movement.
Cass is scared. She doesn’t want to end up dead in the Astral Realm like Yes? Kristen apologizes and says that she understands that she’s getting to point where chaos isn’t cute anymore. She follows that up by saying that her top two priorities are Cass and her student president campaign however so I don’t know how committed she is to being serious. Cass isn’t either because she flat out states that she can’t rely on Kristen. She’s so so lonely and she’s confused about why things aren’t working out. They started out so big and magical and they’re still so stuck. She thought it might be because of her somehow but then she learned about the trail of abandoned gods in Kristen’s wake and realized that *she* was the connecting factor, something that Kristen cops to verbally: “It’s me,” she says.
Cass announces that she’s getting some help and Kristen asks who. A cleric? Nope. No clerics for now. She just wanted a friend. Kristen sees her petting something invisible and asks if it’s a dog.
“I’m more of a cat person,” Cass says as a black cat fades into view.
“Hi Kristen,” Kalina says.
And that’s where we end our ep!!!! The bitch is back!!!!
Honor Roll
Riz for Thinking Of All His Friends
In Sophomore Year there was a thing with Riz’s dad where it was like, sometimes you show your love through work and, viewed through that lens, Riz *really* loves his friends. I recognize that the likelihood of his meticulous plan actually working is slim to none and he’ll have to accept that even if they all stay really close friends (which they better), they’re likely on at least slightly different life paths, I do think it’s really sweet that he’s putting so much effort into making sure that ALL of his friends are successful by the metric that he’s using. Also, the “Hi Adaine :)” binder for her was so cute. I love nerd friendship.
Detention
Fig for Hilda-Hilda-ing Too Close to the Sun
Girl the Fantasy FBI is after you!!! Just stop lying and go to class!!!!!
Random Thoughts
In the AP for this ep, Emily mentioned some cool warlock thing that might be worth taking the MCAT for and officially registering (she’s currently off the books multiclassing) but it’s never mentioned in the actual episode so I assume it got snipped away in editing.
I really love how polite Adaine is to anyone who hasn’t earned her scorn and the little moment of her taking a reasonable amount of food from the trashbag Lydia offered her and thanking her was very endearing to me.
Zac is very quick on his feet and Chloe is a GREAT save for Cloaca but it is ABSOLUTELY not gonna be what anyone calls that bird but me and him.
When Jace said over the intercom that Sorc classes are just talking about how fun and easy magic is, I’m surprised Adaine have anything snarky to say about that, lol. *I* had a comment and I don’t even go to that school.
Is anyone else getting like…Santa Clause 2 energy from the Grix situation? If that ends up being the vibe then that’s super funny because iirc Santa Clause 1 was ref’d a bunch with the oracle stuff in Freshman Year. Full circle baybee.
KP seems like she is springing into existence to fill the voice left by Penny Luckstone getting her GED and leaving. They’re like on the exact same level of one axis of a cartesian plane but on opposite sides. Both at 100% intensity but vibes in opposite directions.
I kinda wanna add a poll to this post that’s like, what is the crazier story? Mermaid reproduction with the Thistlesprings or snapping turtle man with gun up his secret cloaca story with Jawbone?
Honorary Honor Roll to Ally the person for the legendary 4 dogs joke. Honestly even funnier knowing that that’s the actual name of Brennan’s old PC. Burned the man to his face. Roasted him like corn.
OK, so what are we thinking about the Ratgrinders? Is that a ref to grinding rats for XP or more how they see other people/what they’re going to do to people who get in their way? KP is obviously very rules focused but in a Lawful Annoying way. I do think it’s interesting though. Have any of you guys ever seen the Community episode where it turns out everyone at Greendale hates the gang because they have major main character syndrome and are always forcing everyone else at school to accommodate their flights of fancy (a perfectly reasonable reason to have beef with people)? I’m wondering if there’s a bit of that energy happening here. Either way, this strikes me as a party that’s interested in exploiting loopholes and such for maximum efficiency (eg: finding the rogue prof for instant straight A’s) and that’s a different kind of maverick behavior than what the Bad Kids do which is go buckwild, breaking rules if necessary, but getting real results. It’s like the BK’s are Aguefort’s perfect party and I’m suspecting the RG’s are Grix’s. Speaking of–
A FH concept I had ages ago was rival adventuring party to the main group which has like, bizarro versions of everyone. And we may be getting that! We have an emo bard to contrast Fig’s punk rocker energy. And a rules follower (derogatory) rogue to contrast Riz who is also a rules follower (blessed). Very curious to see the rest of their party! And very curious to know if they’re Bad (™) or just annoying in a high school way. Sometimes people just don’t vibe with you.
Oh, a specific concern that I have: KP specifically asked where Kristen was able to create a god. I don’t think that’s info I want a super type A person I don’t trust to have.
Very sweet that Jawbone’s immediate instinct when he thinks an earthquake is happening is to bodily shield Fig and Adaine, his two kind daughter-figures in the Bad Kids.
Kristen says that Cass is a hard sell but I have to disagree. Look at this flyer. It looks convincing to me!
“I think songs can accomplish a lot, if you let yourself hear the music.” Gorgug :( He’s gonna show Porter this season. I just know it. I believe in you Spring Break!
Love Murph throwing in the Frosty Folk thing apropos of basically nothing just to make sure they had an in-character reason to all know about that for later, just in case. Info management! Important!
I remember Bucky being a lot younger but either I’m confusing him for one of her other two brothers or it got retconned (or Quangled lol) older to make this storyline work. Very interesting that he went in for the hug, not the other way around. Seems like at least one person missed her. With his longsword and his parents’ inclinations, it seems like he’s most likely a Helioic Paladin. I’m very interested in how they’re going to treat his relationship with Helio because even though Kristen rejected him and we’ve seen that he has some followers that range from just shitty (K’s parents) to downright culty (the Harvestmen), that doesn’t mean that all of his followers are like that and we’ve never actually seen Helio be anything but pretty chill when he’s appeared. He wants to talk to Kristen about something and my conspiracy theory brain is wondering if he was asked to be Helio’s new chosen one but he hasn’t told anyone yet. That would be very interesting and I’d like to see a storyline about the tension of K and her brother having very different relationships with the same god. The chill peace and love god might have been a great person for him to turn to in absence of his one lifeline in the house leaving. But it could also be tons of other things so we’ll see.
Wild that Kristen has pissed off or abandoned every member of that godly family (Sol, Helio, Galicaea, and Cass). She really is the constant here.
Ally says Kristen is wearing an Adidas tracksuit meaning that this world canonically has both Adidas and Badidas.
It’s a funny moment when Terps is like, “Is there harm in your life? ”to Fabian when he mentions eating food out of a trash bag but like, the kid isn’t doing *great*. Def some neglect happening and he said he was wearing yesterday’s clothes and still banged up from the Night Yorb fight. If I was a teacher, I’d have questions too!
Yolanda Badgood. Terpsichore Skullcleaver. Lucilla Lullaby. Most of these professors are named like My Little Ponies and I love it.
When Lucilla say “Wanda” it seems like she briefly (correctly) thought it was Fig which is funny because it paints the picture that she’s been actively waiting on pins and needles for her to show up for the past two years. It’s funny because she’s not a missing person. She’s highly visible both from saving the world and being a rockstar AND both of her dads work at your school! Just get in touch!
Really hope Adaine follows up on the Aelwyn conversation because I wanna see two kids raised in old money discuss the price of ten barrels of diamonds.
Also lol at random things like Fabian being the FUTURE OF DANCE being pinned on Adaine’s oracle prognostications.

Request: “Price/Soap/ or Alejandro X SurgeonReader
You’re a surgeon, you’ve studied and worked hard to be where you are. With surgery comes loss. You do your best but you can’t save everyone. You know the pain and helpless feeling of losing a patient. But today something is just different and you end up breaking down as soon as you step in the door and throw your scrub cap on the ground.”
tw: mentions of death, loss, mentions of violence, angst with comfort
You were in school for years, passed your MCATs with flying colors, scored excellent marks in each of your rotations with your mentors and the staff giving you glowing recommendations. And when it came time to apply your skills, you did it with ease. And John couldn’t be more proud of you. In fact, he bragged about you every chance he got. Anytime he was deployed, he talked about you to his team with a grin going from ear to ear. And honestly, they were in awe as well. Not just because you were a skilled surgeon, but because someone like Price managed to pull someone like you.
John always kept his phone with him when he was on base, always with his ringer on as well. You made a habit of texting him when you were brought in on call, when you were about to enter the OR, and you’d call him when you were done and the patient was in the recovery wing. That didn’t change when he was home. Sometimes you’d call him, voice thick with exhaustion and the inkling that you might break, he could hear fighting your tears when you’d tell him about the patient you’d just lost. He’d rub the sleep out of his eyes, make a fresh pot of coffee, get in his car, and drive straight over to you. The staff all knew him by this point and buzzed him in without question. He’d hand you your thermos full of coffee and pull you in for a hug. If there’s anything he can understand, it’s the sheer, gut-wrenching, agony of losing someone entrusted to your care.
“You did all you could, love. Crack on, yeah?” He kissed your cheeks and rested his forehead against yours, you nodded and took a deep breath. You weren’t crying but you were pretty damn close.
Over time, you managed to steel yourself against that loss. Against that unforgiving blow dealt by the pain of losing someone on your table, under your knife. You’ve since learned to compartmentalize the loss and keep pressing on. It didn’t mean that it didn’t whittle away at you any less every time it happened, try as you might to prevent it but has anyone been successful in preventing the inevitable?
You’ve been keeping an eye on the news, mortified at the violence among the citizens for things that aren’t worth it. But as you watched the news, you knew you’d be called in one of these nights. It’s fine. Business as usual. It’s what you did, it’s what you signed up for, you’d do everything in your power to save them. John knew too, he was worried about you but he also knew you were strong and capable.
To help take your mind off things, John invited you and the task force out for drinks. He knew how, unfortunately, fond of them you are and knew they could help keep your mind off the growing unrest gnawing at your stomach. Which is how you found yourself sandwiched between John and Simon, with Johnny and Kyle sitting across from you. As much as you wanted to join them, you were on call and had to be ready to go at a moment's notice. You were happily sipping your water as you listened to Johnny’s enthusiastic story telling accompanied by Simon’s occasional grunts and eye rolls. Your phone buzzed in your pocket and you knew.
“Alright, that’s me, boys. Catch you guys next time, yeah?” You sighed, scooting out of the booth after John gave you room. You gave him a quick peck on his lips, “I expect him back home at a reasonable time, got it?”
“Yes, mum.” Teased Johnny, you threw your crinkled napkin at him with a laugh before heading out. You took a deep breath as you sat in your car, mentally preparing yourself for whatever was coming your way.
You got to the hospital and changed into your scrubs as quickly as you could, scrubbing into the OR as the nurse rounded you off on the case. Seems like it was your turn to deal with the fallout of whatever the hell was going on out there, you breathed deeply, steeling your nerves as you made your way into the OR.
Thirteen hours.
You were in surgery for thirteen hours. And it didn’t. Fucking. Matter. After suffering critical injuries, bleeding profusely, spending all that time with you and your nurses trying to stem the bleeding and repair the damage at the same time, it didn’t fucking matter. The patient had coded and was pronounced dead. You were numb. You were numb when you stiffly walked over to the family to inform them, you were numb when the man’s wife fell to her knees, clutching at your buttoned-up white coat, her husband's blood drying on your scrubs. You were numb when she was sobbing into your legs, you were numb when the rest of her family tried comforting her and pulling her away from you.
You were numb.
You didn’t call John when you were finished. You didn’t change out of your scrubs, didn’t bother taking off your cap when you got in your car. You don’t remember driving home, you don’t remember how you got home honestly, you don’t remember the painfully stiff walk to the front door, you don’t remember seeing the extra car in the driveway. None of it registered. You opened your door and tossed your keys on the table at the entrance, you didn’t hear Simon greeting you from the dining room, didn’t hear John calling your name as you dragged your tired body to your room. That’s not true, you heard them but either it didn’t register or you were too cold to care.
You were numb.
John watched in horror as you walked right past him. He saw you were still wearing your scrubs, he saw the blood that stained your pants and a little bit of your top, you didn’t react when you saw Simon (who you’ve drunkenly told John was your favorite), you didn’t even blink when John called out your name.
“Fuck.” John sighed, dread settling in his gut like a lead balloon, he’s only felt this intensity a handful of times on the field and it never ended well.
“I’ve seen that same look on you before.” Simon quirked a brow, looking at John over the rim of his cup,
“Hang back, Simon, might need you.” His heart hammered in his throat as he stepped out from behind the kitchen counter and jogged to your shared room.
“Sweetheart, can I come in?” He knocked on the door, when he didn’t get an answer he tentatively stepped in, gently closing the door behind him. He didn’t have to look very hard, your scrub top was on the floor and you stood beside it, pants still on, eyes fixed on the ground below your feet. You don’t know how long you were standing there, it felt like an eternity, it felt like a minute.
“I’m goin’ to help you undress, alright?” John’s voice was low, a calming baritone, thawing the frozen walls of your defense mechanism. He took a slow step towards you, then another, then another, and he was right in front of you. He kneeled down and gently undid the tie on your scrub pants, sliding them down your legs, tenderly lifting one foot and then the other to get them off of you. The warm occasional brushes of his fingers thawing you out even more,
“I lost another one, John.” Your voice was hoarse from disuse, his head snapped up at you, almost shocked that you spoke.
“Oh sweetheart.” He sighed, standing upright with a pop from his knees. He ran his warm hands over your arms, rubbing them in an attempt to warm you up. He watched the tears build in your eyes, watched the quiver of your bottom lip,
“I don’t think I can do this anymore, John.” You sobbed with your head hung low, he sat on your bed and gently guided you to sit beside him. He took your legs and placed them over his lap, gently massaging your calves as you leaned against him and cried into his shoulder,
“Take some time off.” His voice was calm, hands working methodically on the tension in your legs,
“If I’m not there, then who’s going to do the surgeries?” You hiccuped, your tears soaked through his tshirt as your sobs wracked your body,
“The other surgeons that work there.” He reasoned, “All the time you’ve spent there, you haven’t taken time for yourself. You’ve done more than enough for them, they’ll understand.”
“What if they don’t?”
“Then find somewhere else that does.” He shrugged, he knew it wouldn’t be that simple but at the same time he wanted to believe,
“I’m here for another two months, love. Take the time. Recharge. Go back refreshed.” His hands worked his way up your calves, to your knees, fingers getting between the tendons that shifted and clicked under his touch,
“I do miss you.” You sniffled,
“And I miss you. If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for me.” He nudged your head with his, resting his forehead against yours,
“Ok. I’ll text my supervisor.” You wiped your nose with the back of your hand, your breath hiccuping as you tried to calm yourself down.
“There we go.” He kissed your forehead and guided you to stand, he walked with you to the bathroom and helped you climb in the shower.
“You get cleaned up, I’ll fix you some breakfast, yeah?”
“Ok.” You smiled weakly at him as you turned the shower as hot as you could tolerate, “I love you.”
“I love you too, sweetheart.” He gave you one last kiss before heading back out into the kitchen. As you stood under the spray of hot water, your sobs started up once more, you covered your mouth as you leaned against the cold tile wall.
Yes, you were tired of the stress and pain of your job. Yes, it was taking a toll on you mentally, much more than it did physically after standing for long periods of time. Yes, your heart ached with every loss, despite your attempts to compartmentalize, you remembered their faces, the various states they came to you in, their families. And you’ve told him as much over time.
But you wouldn’t tell him about this one. You wouldn’t tell him that the man on your table had succumbed to wounds he received trying to help those involved in the riots lately. You wouldn’t tell him that his wife was pregnant when she fell on her knees in front of you.
But most of all, you wouldn’t tell him that your patient looked like him. You wouldn’t tell him that you had to fight your own mind and keep it from projecting your John onto the man in front of you. You wouldn’t tell him that your nightmares consisted of working for the military and operating on him and losing him. You both knew of the risks of his job, it wasn’t a foreign concept that there was a possibility he wouldn’t come home to you one day. You’ve glossed over it but never actually talked about it, never wanted to. Both of you foolishly believed that if you didn’t talk about it, it wouldn’t happen. It’s worked so far, so why fix what isn’t broken?
All of this was swimming in your head as you bit down on your knuckles to keep from sobbing loudly, like your body so desperately wanted you to do. But John knows you better than you dare to give him credit for, he knew you were still terribly broken up about it. Your John, your lighthouse beacon in the stormy sea of your heart, your gravity keeping you tethered to the ground you walk on. When you blinked the tears and the water from your eyes, you saw him standing under the spray of water with his tshirt and underwear still on. He held your face so lovingly, waiting for you to come back to him,
“Oh John.” You sobbed, throwing your arms around his neck, and burying your face in his shoulder, you cried and cried, your body shaking at the force of your wails. He wrapped his arms around you tightly, holding your head against his shoulder,
“It’s alright, love, I’ve got you.” He swayed gently under the spray of hot water, his broad shoulders shielding you, “I’ve got you.”

Listening: Love Me Again by V
Hey guys! It's been a bit since I last uploaded something about myself and not something I just reblogged. So here goes a bit of a life update (bear with me).
First off, I got into an online master's program at UNC!! This being said, I start on Monday (T-3 days)! I only have access to two classes thus far, so I've been trying to get ahead on the textbook readings. I might be a tad insane since I'll be a full-time student (16 credits - *cue the jaw drops*) AND working full-time. I will try my hardest to keep working my 40 hours at my job as a clinical research coordinator, but I'm not sure it will be possible. Thankfully my manager is super nice (she wrote one of my LORs for school) and will try her best to be flexible with me, but there's only so much she can do.
I am putting MCAT studying on the back burner slightly for now. But do plan to retake it (for the third time). I also plan to apply in the next cycle (2024-2025) and really really hope that I get in.
Oh! I almost forgot! I am also working on this super cool project with a premed/med student TikToker and can't wait to see the final product. I can't say much right now, but maybe later on I can.
Anyways, I wish everyone starting school the best of luck and those that are trying to get into medical school, YOU GOT THIS!!!! I'm always rooting for all of you!

not to have more thoughts about the legally blonde au but
steve is a cosmetology major (fashion related minor? maybe?)
he's dating a girl that his parents introduced him to (he's trying to repair his relationship with his mum, and occasionally his dad acknowledges that he exists long enough to introduce him to his business associates' daughters)
she's surprisingly lovely, wants to go to medical school and become a surgeon, got along with robin and dustin (the only people who's opinions matters)
steve's actually in love, completely supports her, and he think she loves him too (he should have realised-)
they're celebrating their anniversary and steve hasn't bought a ring (his dad promised him his grandmother's ring and he hasn't been able to get it yet) but he's still working up to propose
except. she dumps him. calls him cute, but she doesn't consider him mature enough for the future she's envisioning. she wants to win the nobel prize for her work in the medical field, and steve seems happy playing around with hair. she says this'll be good for them.
steve has become a much better person since high school and he loves cosmetology, has really settled in his own skin. but he's also a massive bitch and she broke his heart in ways only comparable to nancy.
how hard can the mcat really be anyway? (his dad supports the change in career, his mum worries because she's starting to know steve)
robin and dustin both think he's being ridiculous but they help him study over the phone during their free time and then in person over spring break
and steve not only gets a good score for the mcat, he gets into the exact same class as this girl
he's not interested in winning her back, just in proving that he's more than cute. but he's over the top sweet towards her, wants her to want him so that he can let her down.
medical school sucks tho. it's full of people who looks down at him for how he dresses, how he acts. the kind of people his dad wants him to befriend. steve wants to be himself and still prove everyone wrong. (...passive aggressive charm?)
his ex is actually the one to invite him to a café, says he's welcome to join their study group. steve thinks he's started to prove himself and study group just sounds good in general, so he goes.
his ex and her group of friends do their absolute best to humiliate him, to make him drop out. they talk down to him, ignore him, accidentally-on-purpose elbow him. someone spills his drink and it ruins his sweater.
meanwhile on the small stage the café has, eddie has been playing some acoustic versions of songs he's working on. it's part of his songwriting process to try things out in public before finishing them. and all he sees is this cute guy (that he's not sure he recognises) having honestly the worst day.
so eddie finishes up his song and decides to buy the guy a new drink at the very least. maybe try some soft flirting, because he can't tell at a glance if the guy is straight or not. (he's not, steve has been out as bisexual to his friends since he first heard the word, and he knew he liked more since '85)

fuck it, why not, nct 127 as engineering students
it's midterm season and i needed smth fun to do lmao. partially inspired by dumb shit i’ve seen/done
taeil: social butterfly exchange student studying something super obscure like petroleum or mineral engineering. on his first day of school (after getting run over by a roomba), he made up some stupid lie about his home country in an effort to appear more interesting. shit escalated, the lies continued, and now four years later he’s sir moony dal tae-1-methyl-cyclohexane-il from the glorious country of kwangya on planet mars. he’s actually from korea.
johnny: biomedical engineering student who will literally never shut the fuck up about going to med school. drinks redbull for breakfast, lunch and dinner. brushes his teeth with redbull. puts redbull in his diffuser. smokes redbull. did i mention he’s drinking redbull right now so he can stay up studying for the mcat? and that he’s trying to get into med school? in all seriousness he’d be a great doctor. but he’d also prescribe redbull.
taeyong: overworked mom friend studying electrical engineering. in a perpetual state of panic, sleep deprivation and electrocution; but he always has essentials on hand for his kids. be it bandaids, tampons or condoms, all you have to do is ask. oh also he modifies roombas to chase people down hallways while singing the thomas the tank engine theme song. he’s like michael reeves but giggly and with good intentions.
yuta: part time chemical engineering student, full time drug dealer. accepted his offer to the program because he watched one episode of breaking bad while stoned out of his mind, so it's all over for you when he figures out how to cook meth in the lab. the only issue right now? yeah he failed the lab safety training like six times and thought hydrofluoric acid was edible. he's not allowed into any undergraduate lab, much less onto campus at all. yeah he got expelled.
doyoung: obnoxious industrial engineering student. won't shut up about optimization and how his very optimized schedule has allowed him to maintain a 4.20 gpa, do 50+ extracurriculars and get multiple bitches. eventually his extensive spreadsheets creep out every girl he gets with and he has a crisis over his sexuality. gets suspended for public indecency with jaehyun two days before graduation.
jaehyun: goes into civil engineering thinking he can convince everyone he's straight by working with straight members and supports in infrastructure. resident hetero fuck boy up until he learns about bending moments in his second week of school, at which point he comes out. often struggles to finish exams because he's too busy thinking about how the pipe or beam he's analyzing looks too much like a penis.
jungwoo: the nicest mechanical engineering student you'll ever meet. is so sweet and innocent that people are constantly mistaking him for a freshman. mentors younger years, has the most cracked linkedin, brings coffee and donuts to class, generally just a good guy. oh, and the guy who looks exactly like him, who gets fucking hammered at every event and once did a line off a portrait of Isaac Newton? pfft nah that's not jungwoo. no way.
mark: aerospace major and music minor, but he spends so much time in the music faculty that no one believes him when he says he's in engineering. makes a "it's not rocket science" joke at least once in every conversation. probably giggling like a fucking buffoon in the back of a class, so loud that you can hear him in lecture recordings. he also can't go anywhere without recognizing 30 people and fist bumping all of them in turn like "brooooooo."
haechan: stinky computer engineering student who only ever wears the same two hoodies in slightly different shades of grey and considers walking in the rain to be an acceptable substitute for showering. claims he's grinding league and valorant during exam week so people underestimate him. everyone's surprised when they find out he's been on the dean's list since year one AND knows how to do laundry. again his laundry is two hoodies in slightly different shades of grey.

lil update
hello everyone!
long time no see. almost a year, actually. a lot has changed since then!!
in true kai fashion i got really sick during my senior year and ended up in the hospital. but this was the time!!!! i finally got the medical care that i needed and it has changed my life.
i wrote my thesis and presented it at three conferences. no prize except the immense satisfaction that i beat the odds and did it!!!! and had fun! and my final semester ended with a really high 4.0 gpa which was something i felt i would never be capable of again.
i did not get accepted into any of the masters programs i applied for. i applied while in the hospital, one of my references ghosted me, it was all around a bad time. and of course when i didn't get in, it felt like the world was ending. i have made school my identity my entire life, so how would i function without it?
over the course of my degree i failed two courses. one of them i failed three times. i retook the one i had failed multiple times over the summer even though i obviously no longer needed it to convocate (it got cut from my program requirements). i finished with a 4.0 and that was enough to bring my cgpa up enough to apply to med school, my dream!!
i could not apply to med yet because i could not afford to. med school applications are so cost prohibitive and i did not qualify for assistance for the mcat fees yet. so realistically that puts me at least two years out from medical school. i look at it as an opportunity to work and gain insight into what i may get myself into.
so i started a full time job as a clinical research coordinator at a medical clinic. i'm still new but i'm learning so much and i'm so excited about everything!
in my free time i have also been super busy. i've been advocating for long term mental healthcare for quite a while, but a friend and i actually started our own nonprofit organization that runs peer support groups and stuff. i'm also on an advisory committee for a mental healthcare resource being constructed where i live. and i've been volunteering for other local orgs to give back when they've given me so much. on the flip side, i've been heavily involved in 2slgbtq activism as well!!! i have spoken at events and i created a whole project that has taken off. i am also on the wait list for my top surgery, and should have it within the year!
i'm going to start studying for the mcat pretty soon so i will likely pop back online then. i am currently enrolled in one first year sociology course as a study strategy (it is the only course i didn't take that is on the mcat). but studying for that has not been happening. i am so thankful i didn't get accepted to do a masters because i need this distance from school right now.
there is life outside of school. you will reach your goals.
happy fall everybody. :)

These months I've been studying for the MCAT and what can I tell you... I'm really stressed out. You'll probably know how it feels, you have to study day and night I haven't got a nice sleep yet and I'm having headaches and I cant stop crying. This is the worst part of my life rn. I know is gonna be worth it but is difficult to stay positive.
I want to feel better and levihan is my favorite ship, it always brings me happiness and I was wondering if you could write a small drabble about Hange in a Modern AU being really stressed out and almost giving up like me because they are studying for a really hard uni exam (whatever field you choose if you want to) and Levi is there to comfort his lover because they are going through a really rough time.
I would love seeing Levi comforting Hange because I know during this days you need someone you love by your side to give you support. I sadly dont have that person I love by my side to support me but maybe reading this drabble would help me to feel that love and support, because I really like how you write Fanmoose and you always make me feel the emotions of the characters by text and is truly amazing. Keep up the good work and stay safe! ❤
Levi has seen all of this before - the mess of discarded papers, all littered with broad, chaotic strokes of Hange's handwriting, the circle of dirty coffee cups, the towers build from boxes of cheap takeout food, Hange themself on the floor, sitting amidst this clutter, agitated and with vigor pouring out of them.
The tears brimming at the end of their lashes, glistening in the light of the desk lamp, however, that's... that's a new development. An extremely concerning one.
"Hey..." his hand that grazes the side of a doorway is just as hesitant, as is his voice. "Four-eyes, are you-"
"I'm fine!" Hange exclaims - way too quickly and with too much energy for their answer not to sound forced. "Fine, fine, I'm fine..." with every 'fine' they mutter Levi realizes just how not fine they're. "Just a little busy with work. This new research the university has entrusted to me is a bit more nuanced than I thought... Definitely much more nuanced than they thought, but, hey, it's nothing that some digging cannot solve."
"It doesn't seem like it."
"Huh?" back to their papers already, Hange looks back at him with eyes wide open. They blink rapidly, appear confused, the circles under their eyes - way too dark. "What did you say?"
"Hange," Levi's voice grows sterner, his concern - deeper. "When was the last time you've slept? Or took a break longer than needed for you to go and take a shit?"
"Hm..." they bite at the end of their pen. "Today is Tuesday, right?"
It was the evening of a Thursday. And if Hange failed to take note of that... Levi sighs and strides decidedly inside their room.
"Hange," he crouches next to them on the floor, tries not to wince at the stench that's emanating from them. "You need to sleep."
"I know, I know, I will, I just need to figure this equation out first. Then..."
"No." Levi hisses lowly, snatching the notebook out of Hange's palm. Hange tries to fight him, but even on their best days - Levi remains the stronger one. And today, it's no challenge to him at all. "You're going to take a break. Now."
"No, Levi, you don't understand, I-" and there they are, the tears, they return. In full force. Hange tries to wipe them with their sleeve, but tears don't stop, and soon - their face turns into a mess.
Levi exhales, swipes their hand away and wipes their face himself. His touch is gentle, careful, his eyes worried and sad. When the snoot is gone from Hange's cheeks, he pulls them closer, wraps an arm around them and lets them continue sobbing into his t-shirt.
"I don't know how to solve it, Levi," Hange murmurs, clutching at his back. "I try and try and try, but..."
"Shh," he rocks them gently, presses his lips against the crown or their head, greasy hair be damned. "You just need a break, Hange, then you'll feel better. That big brain of yours will feel better too. And in the morning, you'll solve whatever shit you couldn't."
"And if I still won't be able to?" Hange asks in a voice so weak that Levi's arms subconsciously tighten around them. "What if I fail, what if I-"
"Are you working on how to solve the world hunger? Or cure cancer?"
"Well, no, but-"
"Then the world won't end if you fail. The world will still be there, waiting for you to try again. And again, if needed to. But you won't be able to continue trying, if you don't take a break and rest."
"B-but-"
"All people fail, Hange, cut yourself some slack. Now, come on," Levi raises, helps Hange get to their feet as well. They waver as they stand upright, Levi's hold on them is unwavering, however.
"Uh..." Hange says, sheepishly, with some of light returning to their eyes. "I think I'm hungry..."
Levi nods. "You also are exhausted. And reek like shit."
Hange's hand goes to their head, they weave fingers through their hair, grimacing as they do so. "Mm, perhaps, you're right. I do need a shower."
"But first," Levi starts pushing them forward. "Let's get some food inside you. Real food," he adds, glaring at the discarded boxes of takeout.
"You'll cook for me, I hope?"
Levi looks up at them, his expression deadpan. "Do I have a choice not to?"
Hange giggles, leaning more into his side. "What I'd have done without you..."
"Die from exhaustion or asphyxiation after falling asleep with your nose still in your notebook."
"Rude," Hange says. "But probably true." They pause then, features turning more serious. "Thank you, Levi, for... always taking care of me. I know I'm not the easiest partner to deal with but..."
"Taking care of your giant brain is my duty to the universe. And taking care of you, you weirdo," he says, voice that much softer, "is my personal pleasure."

Fallen | 5. The Proposal

Your final year of University wasn’t without its challenges. And as you had predicted, it did take you longer to finish, though only by an extra semester rather than a full year.
Jake, unsurprisingly, finished with distinction, received high scores on his MCAT, and was accepted into veterinary medicine almost immediately after applying. Heeseung moved away after graduating, becoming the music director at the radio station he interned for in his final year.
On the first day of your final semester, you slept through your alarm, missing your first class. And as it was your luck, it was a small group seminar, where attendance and participation was mandatory, with two absences resulting in an F for the entire course.
On the day of one of your midterms, you couldn’t find the room where the examination was taking place, narrowly making it into the room before students were prohibited from entering, and barely having enough time to write the full exam.
For your final essay, you didn’t realize that your laptop was running out of battery, the screen turning black in front of your very eyes right before you were about to hit save. Auto-save had also failed, resulting in an overnighter to finish the last two pages, again, as you hurried to finalize before needing to submit it the next day.
To top it all off, the dental office that you had been working for throughout university received notice that their lease was up, and the university would not be renewing, leaving you in a struggle to find a new job.
You thought things would be smoother once you graduated, but your situation seemed to only get worse. You couldn’t find a full time job, much less one in your field of studies, and were juggling several part-time, minimum wage positions to make your earnings.
It was May when you finally received an interview at a broadcasting studio that you freelanced for during your final semester. They were impressed by the reference given by the newspaper you interned for the previous summer, and wanted the voice you created for the school magazine. Though it was only an internship (that later turned into a job), you were working full-time by the end of the month.
For someone who was terribly uncoordinated and was questionable how they passed gym in school, you genuinely enjoyed being a sports journalist, and finally understood the rules of some of the sports.
At the end of August, they officially hired you as a junior reporter, but as a political journalist, making the most of your actual major.
You couldn’t let go of how much you enjoyed writing about sports though, and started your own blog with the help of your boyfriend, and his friends. You were especially excited to write about student athletes, and giving them a place to shine while they work towards their goals.
Jungwon had been more than happy to be your first interviewee, meeting you for coffee near his dorm on one particularly breezy September afternoon.
Unbeknownst to you, someone had been watching your exchange from a far corner in the cafe, blending in as if he was a part of the fixture.
Sunghoon didn’t know what to expect when he saw you across the street, waiting for the crossing light to turn green.
It was the first time he had seen you since that day in his room, and he didn’t think he’d ever see you again.
It was also the first time he had left his dorm for something other than class, and for a moment, Sunghoon wondered if this was a sign that the two of you were inseparable.
But then he saw Jungwon, waving at you from across the street, and as if his mind was on autopilot, he silently followed you to the cafe, finding a seat in the back corner, with only a black coffee in his hand.
“Who or what inspired you to start playing sports?”
Sunghoon thought of his own childhood, and the first time he had stepped on ice. His parents had wanted him to start playing sports to build his confidence, but it had been you who inspired him to go to the rink. You had gone ice skating with your cousins a few weeks prior, and was mad at the ice for making you fall and hit your head. He wanted to fight the ice for you, a concept that could only be thought of by a young boy protecting his best friend, but ended up enjoying himself and enrolling in skating classes. One thing led to another, and soon enough, he was in figure skating classes, and moving up levels quickly, competing by the time he was 10.
Whether you knew it or not, you were the catalyst for his love for skating, and the constant figure that encouraged him to continue by accompanying him to practices and all his competitions.
“What is your favourite part about your sport?”
There was a list of answers Sunghoon could give, and he was sure most figure skaters could relate. Feeling like flying, the freedom that is felt while gliding across the ice, the wind blowing in his face, clearing his head, and so much more, but the only thing he could think of was you.
Seeing you in the stands, clapping and gasping with everyone else as he danced his routine. Seeing your gaze follow his every move, and though it should have made him feel more nervous knowing that someone was watching him, the fact that it was you made him relaxed. He wasn’t performing for the judges, or even for the audience that came to watch the program, but playing with his best friend, like you were still on the playground, throwing sand at each other (he was usually the target, but Sunghoon didn’t care).
And he loved being able to share his love of skating with you. You didn’t care about the figure skating etiquette during his practice sessions, and got kicked out one too many times by his coach for creating a ruckus, but he liked being able to tease you about it after the fact.
And he knew there were days you followed him to competitions to miss school (and to make fun of his outfits), but you were still sharing the memories. You always spent time with him after his competition, then you would spend the weekend together catching up on all of your school work.
“When was the hardest moment while playing the sport?”
This was the easiest, yet the most difficult question for Sunghoon. It was the day he decided to give up figure skating, packing up everything and requesting to put his studies on hiatus, then going home to clear out any memories of figure skating. At the same time, he couldn’t imagine himself going back to the sport, and couldn’t even handle being near so many other athletes at school.
Sunghoon had been so lost reminiscing about his memories with you in response to your questions to Jungwon that he almost missed that you were about to leave.
He quietly followed you as Jungwon showed you around the school, making sure to stay in the shadows to not get caught. He didn’t even realize it when Jungwon introduced the ice rink, his sight only fixated on you.
Since the day you left, your final conversation replayed in his mind constantly. He would type up a message, but back out of sending it, for he thought he was the one who drove you away.
But he had to admit that he needed you, to lean on you, as you had always done for each other growing up.
When he returned to school after taking two years off, everything had changed. He returned after receiving notice that he would be required to withdraw if he did not return the next semester, but his grades had suffered significantly during his first and only term of studies that he was placed on probation, and needed to meet specific requirements. He had also lost his scholarship, not that he would have qualified after quitting figure skating, but his parents wanted to see him back on his feet and he couldn’t bare to disappoint them any longer.
So he tried his best to bring his life back to “normal”, or at least make it appear normal. He chose classes that required the least amount of interactions with other students, and spent almost all of his time in his room. He only came out for lectures, and even then, if an online lecture was a possibility, that was his first choice.
Jungwon stopped by often, and so did his other friends whenever they were in the area, but that was the extent of human interactions for him, only wanting to graduate so that he didn’t have to return anymore.
Exactly two weeks later, Sunghoon found himself staring at your blog, reading your article about Jungwon.
You had always put yourself down when it came to academics, but Sunghoon had always thought that the compulsory school system didn’t do you justice. You had a knack for writing, you just never had a chance to shine as it always involved needing to be overly creative to write a narrative, or analyze a text to write an essay, or explain facts.
You excelled in your person-skills, and your writing only served to prove that. The way you wrote Jungwon’s article made its audience feel like they knew Jungwon on a personal level, someone who was next to them rather than words on a screen. Despite it being a written article, Sunghoon could imagine himself in your shoes, interviewing Jungwon rather than reading about the interview and he had no doubts that others would too. All of Jungwon’s best parts were brought out in your piece, and a few days later, Jungwon would knock on Sunghoon’s door telling him about the calls he had been receiving from agents, and fan letters he was receiving through social media.
Since then, Sunghoon became your biggest fan, not that he hadn’t always been, checking your blog frequently, slowly spending more time out of his bed. He still didn’t leave his dorm, but Jungwon thought it was progress that Sunghoon at least showed some signs of life, though Sunghoon made sure that his younger friend didn’t know what he was up to.
Jungwon’s interview had gained you more following than you expected. When you weren’t attending press conferences or analyzing new immigration policies, you were travelling to different schools, finding new athletes to interview.
Your blog became more popular as some of these athletes became noticed, or even drafted by professional leagues, that you found yourself drowning in work, and as much as you enjoyed it, you knew it would have negative effects on your mental health.
It was Jake who suggested that you schedule at least one day each week for yourself, and he demanded that every other week be a date with him.
And if he asked on your “off week”, you didn’t reject him.
It was a particularly sunny day in October when almost everything changed.
You were looking back at your first post on your blog, the one about Jungwon, reminiscing about his words as you were preparing your next set of questions for him.
Jungwon had just finished his studies in April, and travelled for a bit before returning to your hometown. The Sabomnim he had trained under recruited Jungwon to teach the youngest group of students, and Jungwon had happily accepted. He had lost interest in competing, and wanted the new challenge of training new athletes, and you were more than willing to cover his new journey.
You had a list of basic interview questions prepared: What made you decide to accept the new challenge? What are you most excited about? Is there a particular teaching pedagogy that you’re considering for your classes?
You knew the interview would end up being more like a conversation, catching up with your younger friend rather than something formal, but you still wanted to be prepared, to give your readers the best image of Jungwon possible.
You were deep in thought when you felt an arm slide around you. Usually, you heard the door open before Jake even made his presence known, so it caught you by surprise when you felt him before you heard him.
He was in casual clothes, which was different than what you had gotten used to in the recent days. Jake had taken you out for so many dates in the past few weeks that you couldn’t remember the last time he was wearing jeans with a sweatshirt, or the last time that he had left his hair to fall naturally.
And you were definitely caught by surprise when when he slid a ring box in front of you.
“I had a whole day prepared,” Jake started, “actually, I had several whole days prepared. And after the first three went wrong, I realized that this isn’t how we work. I even had a whole speech prepared, but I can’t remember a single word anymore.
“We’ve been dating for almost six years now. And every day, I fall more in love with you and know I want to spend the rest of my life with you.
“Will you marry me?”
You stared at Jake in shock, only now realizing that the last few dates had been his attempt to propose.
You were still processing his words, but somehow, your body knew what the answer was before your brain did, “Yes.”

Getting Over Hump Day #1, 11/29/2023
Slow Monday and Tuesday
This week has been so low energy. Thanksgiving inspired overindulgence and the aftermath is staying up late, sleeping through alarms, trying to squeeze physics in before an unpredictable commute, power walking late into work— and then work always bleeds into the next day because I’m in a two-man operation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hump Day
Wednesday is for the reset. I haven’t been acting right, let’s finish the week strong. So I am sitting here writing this blog post in the midst of a study session (YIKES, but once I'm done its back to work AND I will only post this after as a reward ;)).... Anways, I’m very committed to reaching 80 focus hours this month, even if it means a productive late night or two. If I reach this goal I’ll be so impressed with myself. I’ve always liked a challenge, for real. Just sitting at about 77 hours is good enough— it shows that I’ve been workin’ it out.
Tumblr media
I’ve been daydreaming about the days I’d be flipping through textbooks and working problems and I am finally in this energy of wanting to accomplish all of my goals NOW, not “when the time is right”. I'm really out here like, "the time is now", and I’ve been manifesting this drive and discipline so I WON’T WASTE IT.
Desired Improvements for Thursday and Friday
At work I am going to wrap up my internal audit, complete all of my data review assignments, and review any outstanding documents in my email.
In my MCAT HOURS I am going to keep up the good fight with miledown’s and my own OD Anki decks. I’m also going to finish reading and taking notes on chapter 6 of the Kaplan Physics & Math workbook, and then I am going to dig into chapter 7 by the weekend.
I won’t be finishing the book by the end of the month. I won’t likely be finishing the set of books by the end of the year (unless…), but I am taking a full length diagnostic on 12/31/2023 REGARDLESS.
I can’t wait to see my score! This is the longest and most consistent effort I’ve put into the MCAT since I graduated in 2019. I’m anxious to see where all of this hard work has landed me on the 528 scale.

I'm so mad at how little recognition or thanks I got for everything the past 3 years.
I cared about learning the most and helping others, all to just be used and ignored and overwhelmed and burnout. I feel like I carried so many people in a race, only to collapse from exhaustion right before the end and the people riding me took 3 steps and "marvelously did a race all by themselves!"
I think an instructor ghosted me. They agreed to write me a letter of recommendation and then never got back to me. Now I'll turn in an application with no clinic experience or letters, like automatically giving my application 0 chance of even being considered. It makes me look lazy or like a bad student, but I got pretty much all 4.0s. My teachers liked how hard I worked, but I guess they find me awkward and too quiet to bother remembering my name or willing to help me out :'(
Gee. Thanks a lot, school. You really treated me great and helped me for the better (sarcasm). I actually worked hard, and it got me nowhere. Meanwhile my lazy classmates that cheated and used chat gpt are going places :')
I don't even want to bother anymore. I don't want to hear anymore crap about "trying hard" or "do what you can to make the world better or to give to society." I am trying hard and am able to work, but I can't do it on my own. I need others to accept me and support me and not block me out from going forward. Someone not writing me a letter is legitimately stopping me from working. The school not paying me for a job I did is stopping me. Other students using me and relying on me is exhausting and stopping me. A dentist hiring me only to ghost me after I already worked a full day is stopping me. It's insane. I'm getting spit in the face, while simultaneously being told "it's your own fault for getting spat on - try harder to avoid it."
:/
I hate reading all the schools and instructors say "We want motivated students that have a true passion for learning. Those kinds of people go far 😊"
And I work so hard on my projects because I care and I love what I learn to the point where skimming or bs-ing it feels like an offense. Meanwhile my group members and all other classmates don't care and tell me "ugh! I don't care, this is stupid! It doesn't even matter, this isn't on the MCAT. I just need a 3.0 at least, so my GPA doesn't drop too low. Anyway, I can't do this right now, I'm soooo stressed. Can you do it for me? I can't do it later either because I'm flying somewhere later and won't be back till a week later. I might miss our presentation date by the way. Yeah, I want to be a doctor."
The get a good grade because of me. They get time to shadow since they have free time by skipping classes and never studying or doing school work. They get letters because even though they don't go to class, they have an extrovert personality and suck up to the instructor.

Seven Sentence Sunday Monday
Tagged by the sparkly @confetti-cupcake ✨💖
This is cheating about 12 ways, it’s not Sunday anymore and it’s also waaaaaaaaaaay more than seven sentences. I don’t have any new WIP stuff to share because I haven’t had much writing time this week, but the. I remember this fragment I wanted to write for the Holiday fic exchange that just didn’t come together. I expect it won’t ever see the light of day (at least not in this form) so here I shall inflict it on you.
I guess you could call this small town bookseller!Eddie and new firefighter in town!Buck AU my first pass at a Hallmark movie. 😂 It’s such a rough draft, enjoy my lumpy prose. 😂
“Eddie?” Isabel’s voice drifts into the back room where he’s sorting through the day’s to-do lists. Somehow he’d managed to get a fairly chipper Chris off to school on time this morning, but he’d then spent another 40 minutes trying to find the icicle lights for the store with no luck. So much for getting a jump on things today.
“Coming Abuela!” He calls, trying to keep her from coming back to find him. She’s only 8 weeks out from her hip replacement and he doesn't want her navigating the cramped storage room unless she has to. Out in the main shop it's easier to move around, but he still picks up his pace when he sees her tugging a box out from under the counter.
“Let me.” He says, scooping the box up and depositing it on the side table by the register. “What is this?”
“The lights!” Isabel says triumphantly “I forgot we put them here after the school borrowed them for Homecoming.”
Sure enough the box is full of string lights, some still tangled with remnants of silver crepe paper.
“Of course.” He says, shaking his head. “I forgot too.” It's the blessing and the curse of small down life, he supposes. Willow Springs, tucked into the western Virginia mountains, has a population of 6,572, and Eddie feels like he knows every single one of them. Or rather they know him. It's not a bad thing…most of the time.
When he and Shannon moved here two years ago (ostensibly to help his grandmother run her business, but mostly in one last desperate attempt to fix what had broken between them) he’d felt a little suffocated by it all. Everyone knowing who he was, hands in his business in a way he’d never experienced before. That’s still true sometimes. The days after the car accident had been a disorientating jumble of the town reaching out to support him and the gossips digging for as much information as they could. He still chafes under their sympathetic gazes sometimes, but on the whole he’s found small town life suits him well. He likes the quiet steadiness of it, the sense of community is nice too, even if he’s still reluctant to let the world too far into his business. There’s something very comforting in knowing that you have your neighbor’s backs and they have yours. Even if it's as simple as loaning your Christmas lights to the local highschool.
“Perfect.” He says, hoisting the box and heading for the front door. “If I can get these up by lunch I can do the restock before the auction meeting.” Abuela follows him, frowning slightly.
“I wish you’d wait until Ravi gets here, I don’t like you on that ladder by yourself.”
“It’ll be too late by then.” Eddie says, leaning over to drop a quick kiss to his grandmother’s cheek. “I do this all the time, I’ll be careful, I promise.”
Twenty minutes later when hes balanced precariously on top of the ladder that isn’t quite tall enough, Eddie is beginning to think maybe she had a point. He contemplates climbing down to wait for Ravi, their newest hire (and only other employee, but who’s counting?), but he only works afternoons and evenings while he studies for his Mcats, and Eddie doesn't want to wait. He has too much to do.
It goes fine until it doesn't. He’s just about finished, trying to get one final strand looped over the sign above the door, when it all goes sideways. He shifts wrong, over balances, gets tangled in a trailing strand of lights, however it happens, one moment he’s fine and the next he’s falling. He makes a desperate grab at the edge of the roof to try to slow his momentum, managing to at least shift his trajectory so he’s not going down head first, but it's not enough to keep the force of the impact with the sidewalk from knocking all the sense from his body.
He must black out momentarily because the next thing he knows he’s blinking up into a familiar face. Karen Wilson leans over him, one hand on his cheek, the other hovering anxiously over his chest without touching it. He likes Karen, she’s smart and sensible and she and her wife Hen always make him laugh at PTA events. He’s been meaning to call her actually, Chris is good friends with her son Denny, he thinks they might enjoy making gingerbread houses together…
“Eddie!” She says sharply, as if it's not the first time she’s called his name. “Can you hear me?”
He can, he wants to tell her, but he can’t get his mouth to work. Behind her a bag of groceries has been scattered across the sidewalk, a bottle of white wine is cracked open and leaking across the ground towards them. That’s a shame. He’ll have to get her a new one. She’s speaking to him again but he can’t quite follow her words. How did he end up here anyway? Something a bit frantic is beginning to flutter at the back of his mind. He lets his gaze slide back up to where the tail of the strand of Christmas lights swings in the breeze. Oh. OH!
“Abuela.” He chokes out, she’d asked him to wait, he’d promised–
“She’s ok Eddie.” Karen is saying, her free hand settling over his heart with a light but firm pressure. “She’s on the phone with 911, you just stay still.” He needs to be sure. Her heart isn’t what it used to be, and her hip, she has to be careful–
He tries to push himself up, but the second he puts weight on his right arm, agony flares so hot and bright it takes him away with it into a gray twilight.
“Mr. Diaz?” Someone is talking to him again. Oh. Right. Karen, Karen was there, she’d asked him a question. “Eddie?” That doesn't sound like Karen. With a groan Eddie manages to pry his eyes open. “Are you back with us?” The person says again, the voice is low and rich and Eddie wants to touch it, run his fingers through it and tug. He squints against the light that someone is pointing in his eyes, trying to blink past it to the voice’s origin.
There are 6,572 people in the town of Willow Springs and sometimes Eddie feels like he knows all of them, but he’s never seen this man before. He’d have remembered.
“Hi.” He breaths stupidly, his head is spinning and he’s not entirely sure he can blame the fall. The man leaning over him is breathtaking, golden hair curls softly, swept off his high forehead, eyes so blue Eddie thinks he could lose himself in them forever. Yeah, that sounds good, he could just float away on an ocean of blue and never come back. The idea makes him sigh.
“Hey Eddie?” The man says, “Keep your eyes open for me, can you do that?” Oh. He hadn’t meant to close them, he forces them back open. “There you go.” The man smiles at him and Eddie hums happily in response. He’d gladly do anything this man asked him. He’s feeling oddly floaty.
“You’re doing great Eddie.” Says a new voice and Eddie blinks, suddenly realizing he’s not on the sidewalk anymore, he’s in the back of a moving ambulance. Crap. His heart rate must pick up because the beautiful man disappears and is replaced with Hen’s face. Hen who’s kid is over at his house every few weeks. Hen who has the kindest eyes he’s ever seen. Hen who works as a paramedic with the local fire house, right, he’d fallen, they’d called 911…
“My Abuela-” He manages to croak. Hen pats him carefully on his left shoulder, his right arm seems to be almost entirely numb…
“Karen’s got her.” She says, “They’re going to meet us at the hospital. You took quite a tumble, I think you probably broke your shoulder, but we’re going to get you some x rays to be sure.”
🎄🤕🤷‍♀️
I’m not going to tag anyone because I think most of you have done this already this week and also it’s not Sunday anymore 😂 But if anyone has any languishing bits that won’t ever see the light of day I’d love to read them.
