The quorra problem | Programs, isos and the real world
Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with Quorra as a character! It’s more of a story element critique if anything, please read and don’t jump on me for the title. Quorra is adorable and I enjoy legacy- even if it doesn’t look like it from how I keep tearing it apart.
Tumblr media
It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. On one hand you can’t leave her inside the grid when Flynn decides to literally go nuclear but you can’t leave her in the real world either. They have to because they wanted Flynn’s self sacrificing ending or wrote themselves into a corner (this isn’t about reintegration but I will still complain) and this was there way out. But they didn’t consider the implications of it at all.
Cosmic horror-
I’ve made several posts about it and still want to write something with this idea but to a program— the real world wouldn’t be so miraculous like how we see theirs. The minute you’re outside you’re Imediately bombarded with sensory overload and just too much information to process. The grid, which is much more human in its design than the ENCOM system, is still infinitely more minimalist than our world. One of the best scenes is Clu and his team raiding the hideout and not knowing what a single thing is and freaking out, she seems too well adjusted for someone who’s spent a few hours max here— look I know it’s the end of a movie and they can’t do that whole arc, but I digress.
Also don’t get me started on the rumored Ares plot and how they totally forgot quorra is already a program(technically iso) in our world- also it’s not really a “tron” movie plot— where’s the allegory?! The metaphor?! The symbolism?!
Another thing is that…Sam can’t tell anyone about her. Maybe Alan but her mere existence in our world is brain shattering. Trying to explain a advanced humanoid being that’s not here to harm us and is totally cool guys almost never goes well. It also leaves people a LOT to grapple with…like everything we know being forever altered.
This whole situation should be terrifying from both perspectives, however I love the theory that the only reason she was able to get out into the real world at all was because of Flynn’s data stored in the beam. That’s a great thought that almost makes me like her being in the real world just from how much impact that is.
Infectious-
What happens now? She can’t be revealed to the world (yet) and to put her back in the remains of the grid would be cruel. Putting her in another system would be wildly irresponsible because- do we even know what ISOs do? Across all media its “they’re special” but absolutely squat on their actual function or what they’re capable of. We see they have some kind of digital dna that’s literally a miraculous occurrence but that’s about it. Did Flynn even know? Are they just there- existing but not effecting/having a real world computer impact? Or worse - what if clu was right and they did contribute to the crumbling state of the grid? (I think it was a combination of his own fear and scapegoating—I’m just tossing the idea out there).
Sam transferring her over to another system without knowing what she does or how she could effect it would be disastrous. Am I saying she’s dangerous or would have any intent to harm? No not at all that’s now who she is, but it’s sort of a “releasing a domestic cat into the woods a state over” you don’t do that.
Does she get a regular job now, does Sam hire her at ENCOM? She’d likely be some sort of computer smart…in that she come from one. Or does he like —- set her up at a McDonald’s? How’s she get energy does she get plugged in- being in the real world isn’t going to magically give her a stomach. Sam just takes her to a power grid and she causes SoCal to blackout lmao.
Tumblr media
Open portal-
I’m aware most of this post is just me overthinking the implications of everything they didn’t intend us to think to hard about. It’s supposed to be “yippee they’re safe” and I’m worried about digital ecosystems and what the human brain can handle. I think my problem mainly strives from this trope where the character brings home their friend from the other world/ is the reverse situation and no one bats an eye at all. It’s because they want the characters to still be friends no matter how many rules it breaks or sense it makes. It happens most commonly in cartoons. (There’s at least 3 in recent memory)
I’m not saying I want quorra to have been caught in the blast but that there’s a way they could’ve kept communication without world breaking. Open portal situation where he goes back to visit, he chats with her on the screen, both stay in their own worlds its sad but logical etc (I’m not writing a new ending but you get the point).
I guess it annoys me so much because it’s left so open ended, ride off into the sunrise while ignoring the implications™️. “I guess, We’re going to change the world” ok how 🧍‍♂️. The movie did not nearly give me enough information about ISO’s to see what changes they exactly do besides taking over ENCOM. “They[Iso’s] changed everything” ok how🧍‍♂️. Yeah it’s immaculate conception but what do they do I am shaking your shoulders Disney what do they do!
It’s not quorra I’m mad about or even the concept of ISO’s but it’s how the writing just falls short in these HUGE areas that require a lot of lore and information to be given that they just do not. And consistently don’t In the other media forms like betrayal (I haven’t seen uprising maybe they explain something). If you’re going to have beings that shatter your ideas of reality you sort of have to explain that!

I'm certain that I'm not the first person to think of it, but I just want to say that I subscribe to the theory that the birth of the ISOs was caused by Kevin's presence on the Grid. Somehow the Grid absorbed information from Flynn's complex human genetic code, and that caused it to start generating organisms of a similar complexity. Flynn himself never understood this, thinking that it was just "a miracle" and that "the conditions were right", which in a sense they were.
Tumblr media
Depending on how you look at it, this could be interpreted as Kevin being the indirect, unaware "parent" of the ISOs. If so, it would mean that Sam and Quorra are indeed siblings, in a way (I do agree with the interpretation that their interactions in Legacy suggests a brother-sister relationship rather than a romantic one).
Tumblr media
One of the more tantalizing aspects of this theory is that it would mean that there is a possibility that ISOs could show up in the ENCOM system as well after Kevin's visit to it. Nobody at ENCOM would be aware that it had happened, though I'd like to imagine that Alan would notice after a while that a bunch of strange, complex programs started showing up on the company server, with nobody claiming authorship.

so am i supposed to believe that quorra got the special last iso treatment yet meanwhile there were a group of ~secret isos~ in a secret server that flynn moved and then what--forgot about? you'd think he'd tell sam or quorra before reintegration so they could save them. unless like. that's the ending of tron identity, lol.

What if ISOs are actually some form of incarnated program ghosts like water spirits in human world?
They could be a form of life assembled of many drowned programs and don't remember their past. This one also could explain their different code structure.

Checked out the first and current post for the 2023HoopyNewYear challenge. This is just practice. I definitely need to work on my mobility and strength. That will improve hooping and life in general. @unfriendlypedestrian got us @ tom.morrison.training 's (IG) Simplistic Mobility Method, so hopefully I'll be able to start that next week.
The second snippet is part of a twins move for today's 2023HoopyNewYearChallenge. I've only really practiced isolations straight on in wall plane. These are wheel plane isos (think of the wheels on a car or bike). The move for today does a half iso with one hand going backwards and the other going forwards. It's supposed to look like they're just hanging there in mid-air while your hands trace. This is the whole move:

ISOS (Irish Script on Screen) have redesigned their website, if anyone wants new and improved access to high-quality images of Irish manuscripts! (It looks like you no longer need a login to download things at max quality, too? But it might just be that it kept me logged in from before, so don't quote me on that.)
They also have a couple of articles on there, and I found this Timeline of Irish Manuscripts interesting; it takes you through some important manuscripts from the seventh to the eighteenth centuries. Thought it might be of interest to some of youse.

Tron betrayal aka “Clu had a point actually”
I’m reading this comic and I have a love hate relationship. On one hand it’s a really good story and it fills in the HUGE gap between the movies and the background of the grid. On the other it’s “Flynn character decline speedrun challenge”.
Now clu has A LOT of issues but he doesn’t have faulty reasoning for it at all. He has a point. Honestly ISOs should be terrifying everyone the same as they did him— it’s chaos theory. No god. No evolution. They just appear and everyone acts like that’s normal?! (I’m not saying he’s justified in genocide or in making digital Rome but idk I feel there should have been more surprise)
Tumblr media
But also how Flynn created him. He created the perfect monster.
1.) He leaves for undisclosed huge amounts of time. He leaves for a cycles — hundreds of their years and just pops back in expecting everything to be fine.
2.) The use of “Perfect.” He forgets that Clu- that programs aren’t humans there are several times though the comic they get so wildly confused by his sayings - that compounded with the fact he explains Jack shit
3.) I’ve seen jokes but he is essentially Sam’s “evil brother.” Just like Sam ,Flynn desperately tried to be in both of their lives and was thus barely in either. He wasn’t there to see or help them grow, to teach them , bond with them as deeply as he should have. Clu even more son needed guidance because there was no one else— he was told “perfect” and being a program he’s going to take that to the literal logical extreme!!
4.) not to mention the fact that Flynn consistently deminishes his world and what he was made to do? Yeah it’s a play world, it’s a experimental world for HIM- but for clu and other programs it’s their only reality. My heads going to explode from the amount of stupid his ass—

The CinemaWins video for Tron: Legacy is a pretty fun watch, with lots of gushing about the soundtrack and Rinzler getting a separate win counter. It also comes with an interesting theory regarding the ISOs: The difference between them and regular Programs is that an ISO can survive a serious injury (Quorra gets her whole arm chopped off), but the Programs fall to pieces whenever they get hurt, the reason being that "perfect" Programs don't have any redundancies while the "imperfect" ISOs do. Which kind of makes sense from a real world perspective, since a big advanced computer program can crash completely if you happen to write a zero instead of a one in the wrong place somewhere. And of course it becomes a reflection of the flaw in CLUs striving for "the perfect system", since supposed "imperfections" can have their advantages too.
However, I'm not sure if this particular theory holds up completely, due to the fact that we do see regular Programs getting injured but not dying at some points in the film. The one that immediately springs to mind for me is the stray that Sam sees when he's being transported to the arena, with the nasty facial wound:
Tumblr media
I'm sure there are some other instances I'm missing. And if we bring Uprising into the equation, there are even more examples. Tron's scars were a special case, of course. But Dyson was still walking around despite his severe head wound. And Paige used to be a doctor or some kind of medical staff, implying that injured Programs can be healed. I guess a compromise could be that ISOs are still more resilient than Programs, and have better regeneration abilities.

i would REALLY like to see sam/quorra in an "identity"-verse game.
i know that the devs have pushed that it's LONG PAST LEGACY, but... it can't be too long after Legacy because of the generation of lightcycles featured in the game. the cycles are 6th gen--5th being legacy, 4th being evolution, and in run/r, the 9th gen is considered the "modern lightcycle." so i think it is totally possible that we're in a reasonable timeline for AT LEAST quorra to rez in to see the status of these ISOs living independently, and in turn, not being perfect little angels like they were supposed to be. it would be shocking and saddening, and sam would also shoulder his father's breakthrough and responsibility of saving these beings.
it writes itself, and i want it, lol. eol_

Someone so as much says "Map" and as an avid tabletop player I go a bit bonkers. @agriocnemis drew a map for their little dudes and I had just been thinking about the set up for my guys so I jumped on the bandwagon. I took a lot of inspiration from theirs! I knew I wanted SBD to be in cold ass waters but realized none of my scugs are very cold resistant so I had to finagle that but I'm okay with stretching reality a bit to fit themes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The asterisk for Fawn is for note that her communication lines looks like that when she *has* them.
This is subject to change, but also growth because I could add more :eyes: Also age wise it goes oldest to youngest: LSC/SBD - NLTT - ISOS - DF

Bleak weather day. Was not feeling it today at all. I thought to myself, "Self, what's something I can do that's kinda low energy". This is what I came up with.
I've also been in a Squeeze mood which is never disappointing
