Hello! I have returned! (I mean I was always here I just haven’t been feeling motivated to write :p)

I write this after completing the newest boss battle in genshin and I am inconsolable. So don’t mind me as I self indulge just a bit. ^^ (Spoilers in tags)

Plot - giving scara a present (confession?)

Genre - fluff to comfort

“Follow me!”

“Don’t pull me around like I’m some sort of child! Where are you even taking me, Traveler?”

Scaramouche growled in annoyance. You held his hand tight on your own, running quickly through the dense forest. Despite his words of protest, he made no effort to pull his hand out of your grasp.

“You’ll see when we get there. It’s not much farther away.”

“Hmph.. this better be worth my time.”

After a few more seconds, light began to pour out from an opening ahead of you both. As you and scaramouche finally exited the forest, his eyes widened at the sight before him.

“So… what do you think?”

“It’s….”

The sight of the flower field around you was almost breathtaking. The vibrant colors shone brightly as the sunlight painted the land in a soft, warm glow. The tall lilac-tilted trees around the clearing gave the field a secluded feeling. It was like a small, private place just for the two of you.

“Traveling sure does have its perks, huh?”

You smiled warmly at him. He almost didn’t know what to say.

“I still don’t know why you took me here. Am I supposed to be impressed or something? I’ve seen many different types of environments in my lifetime.”

Your smile turned into a frown.

“Even after I took you all this way to show you something special to me, you still aren’t impressed. Ahh, my heart! It hurts!”

You fall down onto the comfy bed of flowers, clutching your chest dramatically. But, just as you suspected, Scaramouche ran over to you in a panic.

“Are you alright?! Are you hurt?”

He knelt down next to you and examined your body, trying to see if there was any sort of wound on you.

Even though he tried to see all big and bad, he still was such a softie sometimes.

“Hehehe, I’m okay, I’m okay. I’m just joking.”

He tilted his head and narrowed his eyes at you.

“Why would you joke about something like that?! What if something serious happened to you, huh? Would it still be a joke then?! Ugh… you’re so insufferable sometimes.”

“Yeah yeah…. Whatever you say, Scara.”

As scaramouche crossed his arms dramatically, pouting to himself, you decided it was finally time to prepare for the real reason you asked him to come here with you.

“I’ll be right back, I just need to get some stuff from the forest.”

The brisk fearful expression he gave before turning away again made you second guess yourself.

“Fine. Leave me for all I care.”

You signed, you should have been able to predict he would have reacted like that.

“You can come with me if you want, but it will only be a few minutes.”

Scaramouche paused to look at the ground before reluctantly taking your hand once more.

After walking through the flowers and finding a sturdy-looking tree, you took out a small knife from your back pocket. Scaramouche watched you in confusion as you began sawing off one of the limbs of the tree.

‘How inefficient.’

He mentally scoffed at you.

“Give me that.”

You gave him a confused look before handing him the knife. He approached the tree and with one swift, fluid motion, he sliced the tree limb right off with barely a single sound.

“Thank you, but you didn’t need to do all that.”

“Of course I did. You were barely even making any marks. We would have been here for hours if it wasn’t for me.”

“Hehe, we’ll then thank you for your contribution. Let’s head back now.”

Scaramouche watched you with a puzzled expression as you began to scrape the bark off of a small log you cut out of the branch. But any time your two made eye contact, he would just look away and scoff, saying something along the lines of,

“This is so pointless. Why do we even need to be out in the middle of nowhere if you just want to do some arts and crafts?”

You only chuckled in response.

This went on for hours before you were finally finished. After carving out the main shape, you gathered a few flowers and mixed it with some water in a stream nearby to add color to it.

“Finally you’re finished. Let’s get out of here so I can do something more worth my time-“

Before scaramouche could complete his sentence, you got up and sat down in front of him.

“Huh?”

“I bet you're wondering what this is. Well…”

You looked away out of nervousness, which made him groan.

“If you have something important to say, then spit it out.”

“Okay. Well, I’ve known you for a while now, and as time goes by, I feel like I’m learning more and more about you. And… I know this may not have any meaning to you since you see me as just a lowly worm, but I’m so deeply sorry about everything you’ve been through. I wish there was something I could have done back then, but I can't change the past. I can only change the future. And I want to make you a promise.”

You gently held out the object to Scaramouche, causing his eyes to widen in surprise.

“I want to promise you to always be there for you, even when it feels like you’re all alone. To always be there to support you when it feels like the world is turning against you. To always be there to comfort you when you feel as though you will always be alone. Because in reality, you won’t ever be alone anymore. I’ll make sure of it.”

“And, I know this isn’t really much, but I remember you told me about how you were trying to seek this out. So I made one for you. I… hope you like it.”

Scaramouche didn’t know what to say as you placed the wooden gnosis in his hands. This feeling…. This is the first time he has ever felt like this before. And before he knew it, he felt something begin to drip down from his cheeks, creating wet marks on his shorts. You gasped in surprise. You had never seen scaramouche cry ever in your whole time knowing him.

“Ah! I’m so sorry! Did I say something bad? Ah, I knew I shouldn’t have talked about your past.”

You mentally scolded yourself as you gently brushed your thumb over the corners of his eyes. All he could do was stare at you, still in shock.

“I….”

He looked away from you, clutching onto the gnosis tightly, as if scared it would dissolve in his grasp at any second.

His mind began to race.

Why were you so nice to him? Why is he crying? Why can’t he seem to let go of it even though he knows it’s fake? Why are you looking at him with such a soft yet worried expression? Why can’t he manage to say a single word?!

He forced himself to look back into your eyes. Your expression was so warm. It filled his cold, husk of a body up with feelings he’s never even known of before. For his whole life he has felt like a broken toy that’s been tossed away and forgotten, never to be loved ever again. But the more he hangs around you, the more he can feel himself growing to trust, even care for you. No matter how many times he tells himself he shouldn’t, that he will only get his heart broken again, he just can’t stop this feeling deep in his chest.

His shaky hand reached forward and grabbed the collar of your shirt, forcing you forward and into a tight hug. Your body stiffened from the sudden action.

“S-scara?”

“… thank you. Thank you for giving me hope.”

Extra:

“So….. you like the gift?”

You smirked at him as you both began to walk back towards the forest. He looked away out of embarrassment, scoffing at you.

“Like I should tell you, traveler.”

The whole trip back to your house he clung onto not only your hand but also the false gnosis.

Deep down, he always knew that he didn’t need a gnosis to feel complete. He always had you.

Maybe a hot take, but I don't think the Traveler was being inconsistent or out of character in the last archon quest at all. People are getting upset at their reaction to Lyney and Lynette's behavior from the perspective of players, with meta knowledge of the story that the Traveler, the character, doesn't have.

The players know, for example, that because they're playable characters, Lyney and Lynette are ultimately friendly and on "our" side, and we can also trust that what they told us about their backstory is true. The Traveler does not have that knowledge.

TO BE CLEAR this post is talking about my thoughts on the TRAVELER'S thought process. If we want to talk about how I personally would have reacted to the situation, I'm an overly trusting bleeding-heart who would absolutely get scammed and probably murdered by Fatui in this universe.

(Also characters, even main characters who you normally like, can do things you disagree with and that doesn't mean they're badly written. I mean, sometimes they are, but I don't think that's true in this particular case)

But think about it! Looking at the entire situation from an in-universe, in-character POV, it's a really bad look for Lyney and Lynette overall, because here are the facts as the Traveler is aware of them:

Lyney and Lynette are not only members of the Fatui, the primary antagonistic force in this story, but are specifically members of the House of the Hearth, which is known to specialize in espionage, subterfuge, and sabotage.

Both of them also work in a field that would further require them to be masters of misdirection, audience manipulation, and drama.

They "coincidentally" ran into the Traveler right as they arrived in Fontaine and immediately began to do them favors and be very friendly, including saving them from Furina, bringing them to meet their family, and gifting them VIP tickets to Lyney's show.

During the trial, the twins withheld key information, and not just about their identities (and listen, I get it, I fully empathize with why they did it, I get the reasoning, but it's still a bad look when it gets figured out) but also about what they were doing in the tunnel.

They admitted that the entire magic show was a ruse to do, guess what? espionage! To break into the room with the Oratrice's core and find out how it works. To, through subterfuge, obtain Fontaine's secrets about the nation's most important mechanism and central source of power.

The Traveler has known these people for like, a day total.

So what conclusions might the Traveler draw from these facts? When the evidence shows that Lyney and Lynette have a record of misdirection and obfuscation for their own ends? When the Traveler has no way of knowing if even their initial meeting was orchestrated for an ulterior purpose? How are they supposed to know if the tragic backstory is even true, or if that's just Lyney trying to win back some favor and sympathy? In my opinion, at that moment, they don't. Hence the coldness.

My interpretation of events is that the Traveler does like the twins, and wanted to keep liking them, but was struggling to reconcile their initial impression of two friendly magicians with the realization that these two friendly magicians were dishonest with them for most of the time they'd known each other, so they needed to have some space to figure that out.

And for those saying the Traveler is inconsistent, here's the thing: they still helped Lyney. They still acted as his attorney, investigated thoroughly, won the case, and cleared his name. They've done similar for other Fatui members in their acquaintance—they helped Childe with Teucer, they helped Scaramouche/Wanderer with getting his memories back, they helped that other member of the House of the Hearth fake her death and escape the organization—whether or not they fully trusted them, and generally they didn't.

As for the Traveler's supposed hypocrisy, my view of their relationship with Childe is that it's only improved because, despite Childe trying to nuke Liyue in the past, the Traveler knows that

a. They can handle him if it comes down to a fight again; b. He likes them, regardless of if the feeling is mutual or not, and is indeed aggressively friendly to the point where it's easier to just be civil; c. Childe is generally upfront and honest about his actions and will strike from the front, not stab them in the back; and d. He's worked together with them before when they had a common goal (for example, the labyrinth they went through with Xinyan).

They know how his mind works and what motivates him. Childe is a known quantity, the twins are not, and it took in-story time and shared experiences for the Traveler to get to even this point of neutrality; they were openly suspicious of him during his story quest.

As for holding his Vision for him, the Traveler didn't exactly volunteer for the job, Childe literally threw it at them with no warning and peaced out. What do you expect them to do, drop it in the sea? That would be inconsistent with their characterization.

Wanderer's whole situation is even weirder, since the Traveler was able to experience his actual memories and emotions and therefore has good reason to trust that he's had a genuine change of heart. Not to mention that they're not friends, I'd argue they're in that same nebulous "neutral" zone, and that only because Nahida usually functions as a buffer (and also because, again, the Traveler knows that they can handle Wanderer in a fight, and Wanderer also tends to be blunt and honest).

Also, in Lyney's story quest it seems like everyone got over their problems pretty fast and they're all chummy now, so you can all rest easy that the twins' feelings weren't too hurt about it.

Anyways if you disagree go ham, refute my points, whatever, just keep things civil.

No bc fuck tim but it really really bothers me how people ignore his growth like he used to be an asshole and I’ll give tim Stans one thing: now he’s so so so stale but what I disagree with is that this staleness is bc nobody likes him like it’s in fact the exact opposite where everyone likes him so much they dont want to do anything. Even when it’s him surface level challenging Bruce it’s when everyone else is doing it too; but he’s still the backbone of the fam! Etc. and it’s so irritating bc him gaining more compassion and empathy even for people he doesn’t fw is so fun to watch and that’s why the captain boomerang thing was so out of character! (Not in a from the author way but in a tim wouldn’t do that and he and Bruce both knew it which is why it went down like it did. Same way dick killing joker was ooc; not in fanon sense but in a he would hate himself forever for this sense) and speaking of that it’s such an interesting mirror to Bruce who genuinely believes that everyone can grow vs Tim’s it doesn’t matter if they grow it’s not my decision to make like it’s the same but it’s not AND WITH CASS’ IT DOESNT MATTER IF THEY CHOOSE NOT TO GROW I WONT DO IT! like ugh. And anyways even when people acknowledge it they boil it down to “Janet and Jack taught him that the capitalist pigs that they are” like no. This is who tim was. Tim was the kind of guy who’d blame a dead kid for dying. That’s ok. Also Janet and Jack? Please reread anything involving them that’s not a fic like Jack had anger issues and they were both aloof at worst like relax.

Fontaine, as a whole, is a nation I feel was so nearly perfect, but also just... somewhat unsatisfying.

Like, the exploration is nice, the puzzles and mechanics are fun, but... it's so easy. I have the entire map 100%. I didn't use a guide for most of it (only for Special Stuff like the treasure maps and foggy branches), nor did I have the treasure compass. All I had to help me was the hydroculus resonance gadget. The only regions in the game I got to 100% without any guides before was Galesong Hill (which, tbh, most ppl probably have at 100% or close %), and Hypostyle Desert (simply bc the underground ruins were so much fun to explore). Everywhere else I used a guide for at some point. During 4.0 I literally felt like I had to hold back on exploring just to not finish it too quickly. Yeah.

The world quests have a lot of interesting stuff going for them, especially the Narzissenkreuz questline and the ones in/around Merusea Village. But... they feel like they're missing something. I don't feel like I'm properly done with any of them, even though there isn't really anything more to add. The Narzissenkreuz quests had a very strong start, I cared about the characters involved and the lore they're a part of, and having it be 3 questlines that combine into one comprehensive story was really fun, but the ending feels... unceremonious almost. I can't pinpoint what's wrong with it, it answered what it needed to and it made it clear what everyone was doing going forward, but... it feels off. Anticlimatic, almost, despite it having the climax it needed. The world quest I was most satisfied with was the Questioning Melusine And Answering Machine quests, and it's a largely self-contained one. Everything else feels... unfinished, almost. But also not.

And the Archon Quests are so so good, but also... weird at parts. First of all, Childe's out-of-nowhere traumadump early on is jarring, especially since... they didn't really follow up with it properly? Like yes, the Narwhal and Skirk ended up relevant but... not to him, for the most part. The important questions this conversation prompted wasn't elaborated or followed up on, which is what could've justified including it at all. We still have no more clues as to why the Narwhal connected with him, we don't know what caused his restlessness or why his vision messed up, and Skirk was kinda just... there. She loredumped and that was that.

There's other oddities too, like Traveler getting upset at the twins for hiding their Fatui affiliation. Traveler has every right to be upset with them in that moment but... not for that. They should be upset because they lied about the magic show, not about being Fatui. Like, you literally called Childe you're friend just the other day! And he's literally tried to kill you (well, okay, not "kill", but he was still an enemy)! And later on you're suddenly fine with Arlecchino, a person we have seen time and time again is an absolutely terrible person? Because, what, she cared about this one specific problem that affected innocent lives? Really?

Furina and Childe not getting checked up on by basically anyone at the end of 4.2s AQ feels not only out of character (you're gonna tell me Traveler isn't gonna check on them after all that happened? Really?) but also just... very shitty. The only one who seemed to even care was Neuvillette, everyone else just kinda... forgot about those two. Despite the fact that 1) Furina was a well liked public figure who, even after the truth was revealed, people very much still cared about, and 2) Childe literally saved the entire nation but stalling the Narwhal for over a month. Even Neuvillette couldn't so much as deter that thing until he got his full powers back, and you're telling me nobody, not even the people who where directly saved by him, even wondered what became of him? Really?

The characters are fantastic here, don't get me wrong, everyone is lovely and I adore them all, but the way the story handled certain things is just... not great. It's unsatisfying. It feels like there were things they wanted to do but either chickened out of or simply didn't get to include. It's so jarring.

#i didnt mean for it to get so long but oh well #fontaine is so so good but just. somewhat off. and unsatisfying #also when i was going through the narzissenkreuz line #during 4.0 i felt like the cut-off for the next stage(s) of the quest for 4.1 was this... awkward cliffhanger #like yes ofc i understood they had to cut it off so they could continue in another patch #but the way they did it felt so weird and odd #and the cut-off for 4.1 to 4.2 was even worse #because not much even happened there other than caterpillar getting introduced and included #the story didnt really... progress #and then when it did conclude in 4.2 it didnt feel good #it was odd and unsatisfying #even though i dont know whats missing #i realize i used unsatisfying to describe it a lot but #that is what it is #unsatisfying #maybe the interlude chapter will help improve it #or maybe it wont #sigh. i miss sumeru. it had its own issues but the writing and exploration was peak #and the lore! the lore was amazing!#i miss sand. i want to explore the desert all over again it was so much fun #4.2 spoilers #childe #tartaglia #ajax #genshin impact #xander rambles

i need to get less ashamed of talking about my interests on my 0 follower tumblr blog because if i don't point out that despite having one of the most interesting concepts ever presented in a genshin event, shadows amidst snowstorms was not actually well written, and was in fact pretty Poorly written, then who else will. Who else will.

#seashell resonance #Anyway amber hasn't shown up in any content since 1.0 where she wasn't optional or thrown out entirely in favor of standing as an #advertisement for euIa. case in point in the scene in shadows amidst snowstorms where you're waiting outside the cave for albedo the last #person joel was left with was amber. when euIa confronts albedo about the fake trying to lead joel away...there's no mention ever of the #fact that amber...was With Joel. Amber who is an Outrider trained to Notice Danger. Either left joel with fakebedo without noticing anythin #or the actual explanation: hoyo didn't care enough to write her because. well. Amber Bad #the next time we see her is when she shows up with bennett #amber used to have a lot of fire to her and this sort of unique not quite cockiness but like. easy way to tell she used to be the difficult #kid we hear about in her character stories and teapot dialogue #she serves no purpose in shadows amidst snowstorms #an event that easily could've capitalized on the Horror aspect of being trapped with a doppelganger of one of your coworkers and shown off #ALL the characters (because get this. You can make people wanna spend on characters who aren't meta by making them Like Them.)#but amber? no value in any event she's ever been in. she talks about good hunter and sticky honey roast. she gets flustered. euIa pays for #her meal. Remember how she was in Almost All of razor's story quest and then when they needed a knight to give him a gift in weinlessefest #they chose...SUCROSE AND NOELLE?#remember how collei has had more on screen interactions with fucking euIa and sucrose than AMBER #how amber and collei's reunion was what people wanted to see and instead it happens off screen and amber simply isn't relevant during #windblume? how amber didn't get a skin with lisa and kaeya? how amber has no appearance in kaeya's hangout event despite their dynamic in #the webtoon and her being suspicious of him presenting so much room to work with?#her tcg dialogue has a meta joke in it. Because amber bad and amber doesn't exist outside of euIa and connecting collei to euIa #and i could go on. about the writing for cyno. about collei. about the way they write kokomi or any genius character. about albedo even.#about all my Other gripes with euIa because they go to about every single aspect of her character except her Basic personality #which is to say the personality we see in most of her voicelines. she could've literally been a saving grace for the cast if she weren't on #of the like top 3 worst written characters #i could talk about like almost any character's decay but that's not the point. I love the expression of the traveler here, we may not heard them speak however we know how they feel whenever they get serious, and how it affects their state of mind and emotion. I have been thinking for this quite sometime now, the most dangerous person in Teyvat is not the fatui or the harbingers or the gods, I think its the traveler. No one knows their origin and for a person who does not have any background, they don't have weaknesses except for a few who knows that, traveler is looking for their sibling but that's all, nothing more or less. (or is just me? I often study my enemy first before making a move) (Paimon is also sus but I'm thinking from the point of view from the people of teyvat).
