So I want to write a novel, and I outline my story and write out everything that happens in the outline and I get to the end and it's... Between 20,000 and 40,000 words, usually. Like I can tell a complete story but I have a hard time getting it to the length of a publishable novel, and it keeps happening with different stories I write. Do you have any advice for making a story longer without making it feel like I'm just adding stuff to make it longer?
While I think you have a workable length for a first draft, I can see where your problems lay. Let's tackle what your intended goal is first.
Industry standard (set by traditional publishing) for novels is the following:
Adult novels - 80,000 to 100,000 word count. Many will fall between that range. Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels tend to run higher, but you'll notice Romance, Mystery, and Crime tend to run tighter, closer to 80k. Literary novels (Contemporary and Historical Fiction) can swing up and down that word length. Door-stopper books of 200k can be found, of course, but that's the opposite of what we're dealing with.
YA Novels - Contemporary tends to stick to a tight 80k, but publishing tends to seek longer fantasy novels, sticking to the adult standard of 10k.
Middle Grade (8-11ish year old readers) - 30,000 to 60,000. Most publishers want something in the middle, as MG readers are constantly stretching their reading capabilities.
These are generalizations that are subject to change, of course, but they're good guides to follow when editing. Let's say you want to aim for an adult novel, which means you want to at least double your 40k length. While looking over your work, consider the following:
Does your main character have enough problems?
If your story can be resolved within the 40k mark, you may need to add more complications to their journey. Does their external problem (the outside issues they're dealing with, like losing a job or battling a sentient typhoon) adequately line up with resolving their internal problem (dealing with unresolved guilt, confronting a fatal flaw about themselves, apologizing to that sentient typhoon for leaving them at the altar, etc).
Save The Cat also talks about the Shard of Glass or Unresolved Wound, a deeply internal problem the protagonist has to confront about themselves in order to solve the main problem of the novel. Deepening your character's issues can buff up the need for more words to resolve them. (Not every story has the character 'fix' this issue - many novels are about characters failing to do just that, that unresolved flaw finally dooming them in the end.)
Subplots, Sidequests, and McGuffins
Subplots are their to enrich your novel with elements that contribute to the overall journey. Besides the main problem your protagonist is facing, what else is going on in their life? Do they need to confess a crush to a friend? Is their struggle to control their magical powers tied to a traumatic childhood? Does learning the truth about their family history force them to reflect on their own behavior? A subplot should weave back into strengthening the main story while adding more elements to make it more interesting. It's not as hard as it sounds - the more you think about your character's internal problem, the more you realize they'll need to confess their feelings, confront their mother, or more to resolve that final issue.
By sidequests, I'm leaning into the fantasy element of storytelling, but you'll find this pops up in a lot of stories. A chance encounter in a mystery can provide an essential clue, or stopping to aid someone could lead to a character-revealing moment. Remember, this isn't filler - you're expanding the overall plot by leaning into your world-building to establish essential knowledge about your world, introducing minor characters that can act as aids or obstacles to a problem, or starting an action scene that changes the trajectory of the novel.
A MacGiffin is an object, device, or event necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but typically unimportant or irrelevant in itself. Usually, the MacGuffin is revealed early on, and becomes less important once the storyline is set in motion. You'll see a lot of despairing comments about them, because they often can be used poorly. But MacGiffins are often essential parts of storytelling, a quest that leads your characters astray from what they should actually be doing (and in turn learning about themselves and the problem they need to face instead).
Your character spends half the novel trying to find the missing crown, only to discover it's been fake the whole time. That whole first half of the novel was a waste of time... or was it? By having your characters fixate on the wrong solution, you're exploring what Save the Cat calls "Doing Things The Wrong Way" where the real answer is in digging deep down, confronting that internal problem, and setting down the right path at last. This is where the mid-novel twist of the king being the villain all along, the dragon they're meant to slay for killing the villagers turns out to be a card-carrying vegan. The easy answer isn't the solution, and it's taking the hard path that gets things done.
For Example...
In Jedediah Berry's genre-bending mystery novel The Manual of Detection, the main character is pulled into finding the missing detective he used to write the case files for. As with any good mystery, there's a lot of good side quests - going to a bar only to run into villains that need confronting later, a one-sided rivalry with another detective ends up solving a problem later, etc. A subplot starting the novel where the protagonist goes out of his way to encounter someone at a coffee shop turns out to be an essential character connection later, and the MacGiffin - the Manual of Detection itself - turns out to be more important because of what it lacks.
In Jeff Smith's graphic novel series Bone, in the beginning, the main characters remain blissfully unaware of the true danger hunting them or the secrets of those around them. But the villains too are unknowingly pursuing a MacGuffin, leading to a series of events that will bring about a massive clash - and a confrontation of truths that will lead to the final solution.
And Finally, Maybe It's Not a Novel
I do want to say this might all not be what you need, because your true calling could be to write novellas - a length that varies between 20k to 40k. A shorter story is just as good as a lengthier one. There's a steady market for novellas of multiple genres, so it could be a good thing to look into if this feels like where your writing should be.

Paradise Killer is 6 dollars on Steam until May 16 and I am here to hard sell you all on it because it's one of the best games I've ever played.
I'm gonna go beyond giving you a bunch of punchy keywords and telling you it's queer as hell and making meme-y jokes, and I'm going to actually tell you what this game is.
So top-level, WHAT IS PARADISE KILLER?
Mechanically, Paradise Killer is an open-world murder mystery. There is zero combat but a lot of exploration of a very unique location. The majority of your time is going to be walking about Paradise 24, looking for people to discuss the case with and for clues that are scattered around the world.
Tumblr media
One of the most interesting concepts in Paradise Killer that is both mechanical and narrative is deciding What Is Your Truth? What Is A Truth And What Is A Fact? From the moment you start the game proper, you can turn 180 degrees and begin the trial and decide who the killer is, before talking to anyone about the case.
For example, getting into the actual crime scene takes a lot of puzzle solving to unlock the sealed room where the victims were killed. But maybe instead of examining the crime scene, you talk to everyone on the island and think you have a good idea of what happened.
Meaning: It is perfectly valid to decide you have the answer to the mystery and just go complete the trial whenever you personally are ready. YOU decide when this ends.
Which frankly I think is a cool-as-fuck concept. Also, I fully believe if three different people find EVERY CLUE and talk to EVERY SUSPECT and hear EVERY PIECE OF EVIDENCE.... they might decide on three different truths entirely. And THAT to me is ingenious mechanical design I have not seen anywhere else in a video game.
Okay let's stop burying the lede and talk about the world of Paradise Killer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The non-batshit version:
Paradise Killer takes place on a big, beautiful island, the 24th Paradise. The architecture is a delightful mix of black obsidian obelisks, brutalist monuments, opal crystals to slumbering alien gods, garden paths, luxury yachts, and a whole lot of gold and neon.
Neo-occultist urban residential vaporwave-core. If you are like me, you will be taking a lot of screenshots. My wallpaper on my computer is Paradise Killer.
Tumblr media
Your interactions with the cast are done in visual novel-style, though I feel I have to shout out this isn't your stock Ren'py UI experience. Every single aspect of the way the game looks compounds the vibes even further.
And the characters are infuckingcredible.
Tumblr media
(Notice the different font? This game has A FUCKTON OF ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS, including dyslexic font options.)
Sammy Day Break, born under the sign of Shadow Zero, is the local distillery and bartender for the Syndicate. Talk to him about what's unique about the whiskey he's made on Paradise 24, or about the good old days of the Syndicate.
Tumblr media
Is Doctor Doom Jazz, born under the sign of Cosmic Deceit, really that carefree about what happened? Is his willingness to rekindle his fling with Lady Love Dies just a diversion to hide something? Well, he's one of the most cooperative witnesses on the Island.
Tumblr media
Crimson Acid has been through a helluva lot since the last time she saw Love Dies. Blessed by the gods with her stunning rack (of horns! OF HORNS!), she's become quite the idol now. So why is she also an information broker? And can you figure out what her true feelings for Love Dies are?
Between all of these conversations, you can explore the island and collect RELICS and BLOOD CRYSTALS (the local currency) and CITY POP SONGS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay so the Slightly Batshit Version:
Shinji: The Syndicate worships alien gods who want to drown the world in war and blood. Lady Love Dies: I don't see how that makes us the bad guys.
Tumblr media
You are LADY LOVE DIES, born under the sign KISS ME TO THE MOON, the INVESTIGATION FREAK. She was exiled to the Idle Lands several cycles ago for falling prey to the seduction of the god Damned Harmony and endangering the entire Syndicate. Only now, with the death of the Council on the eve of Paradise 25, is Love Dies summoned back to solve the murder.
Tumblr media
The Syndicate are a group of functionally immortal humans from all across history who are trying to create the perfect bubble of reality, their utopic Paradise where they can safely revive their dead gods. They were granted many powers and boons by their first god, Silent Goat, and hope through rescuing more gods they will grow in power.
How do you create a bubble of reality to do all this totally ethical shit? Easy! You abduct a bunch of normie humans to live on your island to use as a mass sacrifice to generate energy to fuel the creation of each Paradise. If only the outsiders would stop getting in the way!
Tumblr media
Paradise Killer's world is delightfully out of its goddamn mind and half of the fun of the game is just picking up little nuggets of information about each member of the Syndicate, the gods, why each Paradise failed (there was an outbreak of vampirism that took out like three of the Paradises???), and just the way this universe works.
Okay this post is already too long but I'm begging you all to give Paradise Killer a chance. It's gorgeous, it's funny, it's mechanically really interesting, it's chill as hell, it has an incredible soundtrack,
and you should try it.

I'LL SEE YOU IN A PERFECT 25 . . .

Can you do "Harry takes care of Draco" too? 👀 (and if I may rec a rec, pls include Let's Pretend the War Is Over by pir8fancier)
I’m sorry for the late reply, anon! Oh love me some pir8fancier, a great (and imo underrated) author. Here are some other recs for this trope, some of my all-time favorites here:
Let's Pretend the War Is Over by pir8fancier (M, 8k)
The war is over and Draco is alone, fighting demons of a different nature. This is obviously an AU by now. Written after "The Half-Blood Prince" came out.
Between Myth and Man by @slytherco (E, 16k)
Draco, lost and a little broken, navigates post-war reality convinced that people like him should not be allowed to make their own choices. To solve the problem of his self-sabotaging tendencies, he starts taking a few drops of Veritaserum every morning.
Savage by marguerite_26 (E, 18k)
In a post-war world that lives in fear and ignorance of werewolves, Draco Malfoy has taken every step to keep his condition hidden. When the delicate balance of his life shatters in a single moment, it is Harry Potter alone standing in his defence.
Strange Bedfellows by ravenclawsquill (E, 30k)
When Harry encounters a frail and fidgety Draco Malfoy at the Ministry, he just knows something is wrong and he’s determined to get to the bottom of it.
Inside Your Mind by @lazywonderlvnd (E, 36k)
Goyle's taken it upon himself to act as Malfoy's personal, one-man guard and Harry can't help but feel like it's only making the bullying worse.
The Sinner’s Redemption by oldenuf2nb (E, 55k)
When Headmaster, Harry Potter, loses his Potions Professor - is he willing to fight the system to employ the one person he knows will excel in the position?
Super Rich Kids by @thusspoketrish (E, 81k)
Draco Malfoy has become disillusioned by the glitz and glamour of the scandalous lives of the Post-Second Wizarding War Pureblood Elite. Enter: one existential crisis, one group of thieving cynical friends, and several terrible, terrible decisions.
Nor All That Glisters by @sweet-s0rr0w (E, 110k)
Lonely and frustrated on house arrest, with no prospects for the future, Draco begins brewing Felix Felicis in an attempt to improve his lot. Just in the short term, of course. He isn’t a total idiot.
There Is Always the Moon by @firethesound (T, 159k)
Draco's life after the war is everything he wanted it to be: it's simple, and quiet, and predictable, and safe. But when a mysterious curse shatters the peace he'd worked so hard to build, there's only one person he can trust to help him. After all, Harry Potter has saved his life before. Now Draco has to believe that Potter will be able to do it one more time.
Number Seven by sara_holmes (M, 253k)
Harry already has small children, an ex-wife, annoying colleagues and an international crime ring to deal with. So when Draco Malfoy reappears after eight years AWOL in France, of course Harry is going to leave him well alone...Right?

1. Truth of it is: I was born / With an empty center. // When I find myself there, / It’s often despair. / But now and then it’s Zen.
2. The first law of holes, or the law of holes, is an adage which states: "if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging." Digging a hole makes it deeper and therefore harder to get out of, which is is used as a metaphor, that when in an untenable position, it is best to stop making the situation worse. More generally, it advises how one should solve problems of their own making.
3. A color photo of a pond that is mostly covered with a pale green algae. In the center, the algae has been cleared out in a circle, and the dark water looks like a hole or pit. Surrounding the pond is lush vegetation and trees.
4. // at what age did you begin to suspect you were alive // all things birth / their own opposites / the hole grew / & grew & there / i was / filling it / & therefore the hole / & therefore me / &therefore & / so on
5. Because there is something and there is nothing / There is nothing in-between
6. "and your worst sin is that you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing. Isn't that fearful? Isn't it fearful that you are living in this filth which you loathe so, and at the same time you know yourself (you've only to open your eyes) that you are not helping any one by it, not saving any one from anything! Tell me," he went on almost in a frenzy, "how this shame and degradation can exist in you side by side with other, opposite, holy feelings? It would be better, a thousand times better and wiser to leap into the water and end it all!"
7. here. I can love and love his arms helping mine make something other than dirt and watch that love bleed straight into the space between us and then of course. It falls. Into a tunnel and gone.
8. The floor seemed wonderfully solid. It was comforting to know I had fallen and could fall no further.
9. the grave, getting out of the hole eventually; sometimes falling into a hole and languishing there for days, weeks, months, years, because while not the grave very difficult, still, to climb out of and you know after this hole there’s just another and another; sometimes surveying the landscape of holes and wishing for a high quality final hole; sometimes thinking of who has fallen into holes which are not graves but might be better if they were; sometimes too ardently
10. Have you ever gotten everything you ever wanted? / No. But once I got very close. / What happened? / I don’t know. Everything disappears. Even dreams. I suppose I just flew too close to the sun.
11. The second law of holes is commonly known as: "when you stop digging, you are still in a hole."
12. I am! I’m a pit. I’m a pit that good things fall into! End ID.]

Part 1 <- Part 2 <- Part 3
Ed's time attending college was a short one. College had a lot more freedom than the schools back at home, which he did enjoy, but between accidentally biting off far more than he could chew class-wise and having trouble adjusting to being in such a populated environment, he decided to drop out after a year (with plans to return once he settled in Gotham - which never ended up happening).
Instead, he took a job at a relatively small electronics store, which might've been a good transition point from small town to big city if he hadn't utterly hated his job. Not only did he have to deal with customer service (loathsome), but it was dealing with idiots who didn't even know the simplest thing about their own electronics! Though he put in the effort to attempt to be cordial, his short temper and inability to not be sarcastic oftentimes got him in full-blown arguments with customers.
Tumblr media
This as well as their age and general obvious neurodivergency didn't make them a popular employee in their boss' eyes. Their boss not only thought Ed was too useless for most tasks, but would occasionally berate them or send them off to do menial tasks alone for hours at a time. Their coworkers (all but two) tended to avoid them, too, as to not be pestered with riddles or other fun facts. But Eddie needed the money, so they bit their tongue and tried not to get fired.
Until he thought of a way to start getting back at at least one part of his terrible job. When doing big repair jobs on things such as laptops or phones, he'd often be left alone with the device until it was all fixed. This meant he got a loooot of time to do whatever he wanted to it without anyone knowing. So whenever he'd get a particularly rude customer, he started messing with their devices. Just little inconvenient things in the beginning, but eventually progressing into downloading malware or making it so that they had to answer a riddle every time they wanted to log into their device.
Tumblr media
And, eventually, they'd figure out a way to short devices remotely. They wouldn't do this too often in the fear of being caught, but they saved it especially for their boss, who's computer they'd messed with without his knowledge. The resulting fire from the short would end up seriously injuring Ed's boss, so much so that he needed to be hospitalized. Getting away with that crime would only fuel Ed's desire to see what else they could do.
Tumblr media
They would start hacking into places. Changing the digital billboards around Gotham, or getting people's personal information to get themselves some extra cash; just general mischief that would eventually attract the attention of Batman, due the fact Ed would start leaving clues or riddles behind after they were done.
A little bit after that is when he would perform his first crime to really get the attention of Bats. For a while now he had been messing around with making puzzle boxes and other traps, and he decided to put them together to make an escape-room sort of activity that he could drop someone into and force them to solve. The first victim of this was someone Ed nabbed because it was convenient, and the beginner nature of the escape room meant that Bats discovered it and rescued the victim relatively quickly. But when Eddie discovered how much he loved the attention from Bats, he'd begin fine-tuning his escapes, personalizing them for the victim and making them more challenging for Batman. All the while, Ed stayed completely anonymous behind the moniker of "The Riddler".
Tumblr media
It was this insatiable desire to keep the Batman's (and the public's) attention on him that would eventually lead to the event which would reveal who he was to the world and land him in Arkham for the first time.

The single-minded pursuit of something is what makes good stories and good characters. I’m so tired of reading published novels where the main character passively sits around until the story finds them and forces them to move.
My theory is that since writing itself requires long hours of contemplation and sitting alone with one’s thoughts, it lends to a personality type who sees themselves as acted-upon rather than as the main actor in their own story. This infuses the writer’s characters as well who, after all, are all produced from facets of ourselves and/or our observations.
But the difference between a character that people are excited by, attracted to, and want to read about and one that frustrates and bores us is how single-mindedly and actively they pursue their goal. Certain genres provide crutches for writers because the single-mindedness is built in. A horror story about escaping from a masked serial killer on a rampage forced the protagonists to be single-mindedly and forcefully focused on their own survival either by evasion or confrontation. Detective stories focus the protagonist on solving the crime. Romances that are focused on finding love move the protagonist forward based on their desire for companionship in general or for a particular person’s love, and forces the character to move and take action.
Yet stories with longer arching goals like your typical save the world adventure benefit from forceful characters despite how often the protagonist must be forced into participating. “Resisting the call to adventure” as a story beat isn’t supposed to be the character passively waffling around until they feel like helping, I guess, or someone finally impresses upon them the importance of saving the world. While they’re resisting the call they should be actively wanting something else. Even a character who is completely chained up, locked in a prison cell and incapable of action should want to escape and take even the smallest actions possible to make their escape or at least actively think about it and desire it. A character incapable of taking action due to circumstance is not an excuse for passive characters who don’t want anything.
And even if it is realistic to real life (or so the author protests, not realizing that they do want things, even if it’s simply freedom from the guilt of not having written yet today) it’s not good storytelling. Characters are the engines that drive the story through the racetrack of the plot. They’re not real people. They are a function and that function must want to do something and move forward or else they commit the greatest sin in fiction: being boring.
Move yourself as a writer. Don’t let the character waffle about because you are waffling about trying to figure out what to write. Imagine a world where your character wants something and moves and pursues it and if they can’t move or pursue it they are mad about that or have some powerful emotion about it that pushes them to seek ways to get around the obstacle that keeps them from pursuing what they want. Make them move and make them care and make them single-mindedly obsessed with something that will drive them forward to take action of some kind in your story, even if at first it is to actively run away from it.

Challenge: Drawing D&D classes - Topic 11 - Monk 1
Tumblr media
🧨 Monk of the Way of the Open Palm 🧨
Race: Tiefling Faerun Alignment: Chaotic good Background: Homeless child.
📕 Backstory: I don’t remember how or why, but I ended up on the street and lived for a long time begging. She had people who called themselves her relatives, but they were not blood relatives. When she grew up a little, she joined one of the city gangs (in the other could not survive). For a long time she was a give-and-take girl, and then she ran away, unable to bear the crimes she had witnessed more than once. The gang sent a couple of executioners after her, but she turned out to be more dexterous. She fled to a temple located between two mountains and tried to become their novice before the executioners overtook her.
She didn't know much about temples, in her eyes it was a place where you were allowed to stay if you were willing to contribute and you had nowhere to go. However, the executioners overtook her during the test to become a novice and tried to kill her, but the monks stood up for her. The tiefling did not understand how and why, she was a stranger to them, The very concept of gratuitous assistance was not clear to the girl. She was accepted into the polsushnitsa and the temple became her family. She was already very strong physically, although exhausted when she arrived, but otherwise her mentor had to teach her trivial things, such as using instruments, writing and counting, and also that not everything in the world is done for one's own benefit . The tiefling practiced with diligent fanaticism and became quite proficient in hand-to-hand combat. These skills were useful to her, since the temple was often attacked, during one of which it was destroyed to the ground. The girl was able to escape and save many thanks to her strong body and increased resistance to fire. Since their home no longer existed, the bulk of the novices settled in a village nearby, and many students and monks went to wander around the world in search of a place for a new home.
✒ Character: Big child, used to solving problems head-on and not thinking too much about the fate of the world, lives for today. She tries to help those who need help, but deep down she is still afraid that for all the kindness that they showed her, they will someday demand payment. Particularly concerned with tieflings who are persecuted due to prejudice against their race.
🌀 Skills: Okay, no, he fights great, he still writes very clumsily. Maintains balance well in almost any situation. He does not like weapons and is not very good at using them.
✨ Features: Constantly loses or breaks weapons if they fall into her hands.
RU
Not Alive, Nor Dead
[PREV PART] [AO3]
So I use a text-to-speech site to let me spot mistakes more easily (when the robot actually says it, I find it way easier), and that leads to this robot lady saying "fuck" in the calmest way possible.
For this chapter, it decided 'Phil.' stands for 'Philosophy'. So Graves' full name is now "Philosophy Graves". Almost died laughing.
Anyways...
The following day brought a lot of meetings with it. They would need extensive planning for their upcoming mission, if they want to catch what they dubbed ‘The PMC Revenant’.
Ghost has been on edge the entire day. Something about Graves has been pissing him off (well, something besides his personality and entire existence). The American has been avoiding everyone since his little chat with Shepherd, and Ghost doesn’t trust either of them not to plan anything behind their backs.
He knows, given the choice between glory and power, and saving lives, the Americans would go for the former every single time.
In that, they’re not so different from the enemies Ghost erases for them.
The sun is setting, and the Vaquero base is winding down for the day. The bright yellows and oranges remind him of the second thing that’s been bothering him - Johnny.
Well, not the man himself. The amount of secrets hidden beneath that easygoing smile. Ghost has been racking his brain for days trying to figure the Konchar riddle out, and he still is no closer to solving it.
His feet take him to the shooting range. He needs something to let his frustrations out on, and he rather not deal with the screams of Limbo right about now.
To his dismay, there’s someone else there already. Ghost can see the shots coming from one of the sniper nests. Whoever is it, they know their way around a rifle.
His feet are silent when he walks to the farthest nest, and settles down in front of an M24 SWS. He automatically goes through checking the rifle, before setting his scope on a target.
A quick inhale and the target falls, Ghost instantly moving onto another, when his companion shoots it down.
Annoyed, he takes a farther one, downing it perfectly. From then on, him and the other sniper enter an unspoken competition, each of them shooting farther and farther, until they both hit the last one together, the mannequin falling off the track and flying a few meters back.
Ghost huffs. He can appreciate the skills required to match him, no matter how irked he was when they started shooting his targets. He hears footsteps behind him and raises up to meet his new rival in sniping.
From the corner pops out Commander Karim, and she raises her brows, before smirking, “good shots, Lieutenant.”
Ghost nods, “likewise, Commander. Where did you get your training?” he can’t help the professional curiosity.
Farah’s face darkens, something defiant in her expression, “the streets of Urzikstan. We’re not an army - we’re a resistance. No… fancy bases and training programs.” She looks around, at the vast training fields, “my soldiers are people who want freedom, who are sick of seeing their family die for the crime of being born in their own country.”
He hums. Having to face such a great enemy with practically no support, the punishment being death and consequences equal your entire world… no wonder they so readily accepted the PMC revenant.
“I didn’t know that revenant deals in such… vile business.” Farah spits after a while.
Something in him believes her, “be careful who you trust.”
She huffs, “I learned that lesson the hard way. But I trust the Captain, and so I trust you.” she turns to him, “I will help you hunt him. My soldiers are not safe until he’s out of the game - he knows too much about our operations.”
Ghost crosses his arms, “you got any other skills? Besides being a good shot.”
Farah smiles, walking towards the gunnery behind them. She inspects the weapons hanging on the wall, taking one revolver, opening the chamber to reveal one bullet.
She gives the gun to Ghost, and walks a step back. “Go ahead, shoot me.” she lifts her head up.
He looks from her to the revolver in his hands, thinking about it for a moment, before lining up and shooting her in the head half a second later.
Ghost tilts his head when Farah is completely unaffected, the bullet clinking on the floor. “They call it Ironskin. Shoot me, and the bullet falls to the ground, stab me, and the knife breaks.”
“How’d you get captured?” He returns the revolver to the wall, turning to lean on the table next to it.
“Gas. Not immune to that.” Farah snarls, and he gets the feeling there’s something more to that vulnerability than she lets on. She meets his stare head on, “I’ve heard rumors about you, Ghost. About your powers. Is Limbo truly as powerful as they say?”
“No”, he sighs, pushing off the table to leave, “It’s stronger.”
As he walks by her, Farah nods, silently analyzing him. She would make a powerful ally when Ghost deems her trustworthy. He’ll find out soon enough, on the field.
Price and Ghost are currently scoping out a potential location for the PMC revenant’s deal. The building is a small bar in a dark corner of Las Almas, with a back exit that leads to a car park, where intel suggests a truck housing the ‘goods’ will be.
The Captain has started irritating him about 5 minutes ago, when their very professional conversation about the best way to kill a man with a spoon has taken a sharp turn of topic to become about… Soap of all things.
“So… you and Soap, huh?” Price smirks, his voice filling his mind with his new most hated conversation starter. Seriously, when are they gonna learn there’s nothing interesting to gossip about him and Johnny?
The Captain side eyes him, “I beg to differ, I think it’s quite exciting, what you two got there.”
“What we got is a professional friendship between soldiers, Captain.” Ghost booms in return.
Price nudges his shoulder, cackling in his brain, “that so? Let me take a look…”
Ghost stiffens, “don’t you fucking dare-!”
“Don’t think about Soap MacTavish then, Simon.” He can practically hear the singsong way Price burrows into his memories.
Oh, now this is low, even for Price. Pulling out the ‘don’t think about the red balloon’ trick? Alright. Ghost won’t think about Johnny on principle.
He will not think about how Johnny smiles at him at mess, or how he claps his shoulder before leaving. He won’t think about all the nights he spent awake, staring at the ceiling, falling asleep to the memory of Johnny’s warmth on his skin. He certainly won’t think about how, when their eyes meet, he’s filled with this sudden urge to wrap his arms around him, how he wishes he could just do it one more time, how he’s going insane just thinking about it-
Ghost turns his head slowly, taking in Price’s gaping mouth and wide eyes.
…fuck.
He hears Price inhale to react, and drags a hand over his mask, “I don’t wanna fuckin’ hear it. I know it’s a problem. I won’t act on that, I swear on it Captain.”
Price returns to look at the bar, processing the information. Ghost starts to feel antsy when he finally pipes up, “as long as you keep it quiet, I don’t care what you do. We break a lot of rules, Simon. You really think I give a damn if you two start fucki-”
“We’re not fucking!” he says out loud, glaring at Price, and instantly turns away, unable to hold the Captain’s gaze, “and it’s not… it’s not exactly what I want.”
“What do you want, son?”
What does he want? Scratch that, it doesn’t matter what it is, he won’t get it. Not when it’s…
Price hums, “maybe something like this?” he projects a scene into Ghost’s head - two men, their faces flickering and undefined for a few moments before solidifying into Ghost and Soap. They’re sitting on a couch, in a small living room of sorts. Not talking, not doing anything really, just… cuddling. Trailing hands, flames warming skin, tracing scars, soothing.
It feels safe. It feels… complete.
Ghost snarls and shakes his head to rid himself of the image, “stop.”
The Captain has a somber look that Ghost catches in the peripheral of his vision, “you want this, Simon. I could feel just how much. Question is, why do you think you don’t deserve it?”
Dead men don’t get to deserve, a memory whispers to him.
“We’re all dead. Doesn’t stop me from wanting, and deserving. Since when has that stopped you?”
Since he couldn’t even vocalise it. Couldn’t even form the words, his wants, in his scarred mouth.
“Actions speak louder than words, son. I’m sure Soap will understand, he’s smart enough.”
Ghost sighs, “since when are you a relationship counselor, Captain?”
“Comes with the fuckin’ job, apparently.”
They huff a laugh, and return to their actual job, watching this extremely boring bar, and judging silently the people deciding 4 pm on a Tuesday is the time to get fuckin’ wasted.
Intel is slowly being pieced together, Farah and Alex joining on the efforts to plan for every possible outcome of the mission.
The two of them have been quite useful, providing details on the PMC revenant they couldn’t have gathered beforehand.
The revenant is able to see from the eyes of all their soldiers, the puppets working as a hive mind. They’re not reanimated corpses, or replications of the revenant themselves, but a conjured creation, controlled like a robot from afar.
They can’t actually die, but destroy enough of their body, and the revenant will deem them useless, opting to melt the creature and focus their efforts on the rest.
Alex suggested attacking from multiple fronts, as the revenant’s greatest weakness is their own brain - they’re limited with how much they can divide their attention.
Optimally, they would go after the revenant themselves, but as Farah told them before, they’re likely not even in Mexico. For this mission, they aim to threaten, to scare the revenant into hiding, following his tracks to the snake den.
The two new revenants introduce the rest to their powers. Ghost already saw Farah’s, but he gets to see how knives just bend and refuse to pierce her. He reckons, if her powers are kept a secret, she can be practically unbeatable, if the enemy doesn’t prepare gas.
Alex’s showcase, while less shocking than Farah’s, is no less impressive. One moment, the man stands in front of him, the next he’s gone.
Invisibility. Not hard to guess how he died. Ghost morbidly wonders if he lost his leg in the same incident.
Gaz volunteers to have a go at Farah’s Ironskin, and proceeds to throw whole tanks at the woman, who just stands there unamused. Soap is about to join in when Price blocks him, shaking his head. He informs Ghost the muppets had the bright idea of detonating trucks to use as rockets.
Ghost doesn’t even want to imagine how that would’ve turned out.
As he makes his way back to his barrack for the night, Ghost overhears two familiar voices arguing.
He sneaks closer, interest piqued.
“-playing at games you don’t understand, Phil.”
A barking laugh grates his teeth, “you’re always thinking so small, no wonder you’re still a Captain after all this time. You had potential, but you threw it all away to play with your little special soldiers.”
“At least I have soldiers, you two faced bastard.” Price growls, more anger than Ghost has heard in a while in his tone.
What does he mean by that?
“You can’t tell anyone, Captain” Graves mockingly enunciates, “higher brass got you tongue-tied, don’t it?” he chuckles cruelly, “this is what fucking annoys me about the military - so many damn rules!”
Footsteps echo, walking away, “you’ll learn one day, John. Sometimes you gotta step over red tape to get anywhere.”
The Captain is silent as Graves leaves. Eventually, he tells Ghost in his mind, “I know you’re there, son. Come out.”
Price is wearing a tired expression when Ghost slinks out of his hiding spot. “I suppose you have questions”, the Captain sighs.
“Not if the answers will get you in trouble.” he nods at the way Graves went, “is he going to be a problem?”
Price readjusts his hat, overlooking the horizon with contempt, replying honestly, “I don’t know. Keep a safe distance from him, and let Soap and Gaz know to not trust him. He won’t do anything while being tied to Shepherd, but the moment Graves will see an opportunity, I can’t guarantee he’ll keep his loyalties in check.”
Something tightens in his chest at the mention of the Sergeants. If Graves lays his hands on either one of them…
Limbo will be a mercy on him.
Can you tell I hate the military yet

My pitch for an adult Scooby Doo series I just came up with on my morning walk:
It would be a spiritual sequel to Mystery Incorporated set five years after the events of the show with the gang soon to be entering their 30’s and now having two decades of crime solving under their belt.
But even five years later the gang is still haunted by the events of the first series and their relationships with their parents, romantic partners or- in the case of Shaggy - their prospective dating partners. (Shaggy is learning he’s bisexual as well)
Then, after solving another mystery for the town and being featured on national television for solving their 500th mystery, their latest criminal is supernaturally assassinated in the middle of their trail on national television.
And, to the gang’s shock, they learn days before a mysterious package had been sent to her labeled “From the Gang’s biggest fan”.
Now under the national spotlight, it’s a race against time as the gang seeks to solve the greatest case of their lives to protect not only their reputations and save the lives of the very criminals they’ve put behind bars, but uncover what new supernatural threat has arisen.
And in the end of season 1 after catching the assassin but finding out they’re supernatural, they learn to their shock that without Nibiru (the main antagonist from the OG)’s supernatural interference and influence, the Earth has become home to diverse supernatural species and beings, many even more powerful then the Anunnaki.
And one of those very beings has declared themselves the biggest fan of the Scooby Gang and is causing chaos not only in the human word but the world of the supernatural as well.
So the gang, taken before the supernatural council, is now given charge of solving the mysteries for the supernatural world while answering to the council to discover who the mastermind behind the chaos is before they destroy the peace between worlds and even the world itself.

Would u like to see knives out mystery where benoit doesnt solve it or he doesnt solve it himself? Like that he wouldnt get everything? Id like some girl sidekick that gets it instead maybe??
I mean, the whole point of him being there is for him to solve it, so no. But I think it’s a lot like he says to Helen - he can figure it out, he can present the evidence to the cops, but what happens then isn’t up to him. People like Miles Bron and the Twombleys have highly paid lawyers to save them from everything they do wrong. Bron has a belief he’s instilled in so many people whom he’s managed to convince he’s a genius and even his silliest ideas MUST make sense, even if they very much don’t. Not even Benoit Blanc, his smarts and his cunning, his aw-shucks charm and his eye for details, can always cut through that sort of power. That’s where people like Marta and Helen come in, not in a “girl sidekick” sort of way but in taking the conclusion he comes to and making sure justice is done.
Between the two movies, we’ve seen how privilege and power allows people to get away with things other people wouldn’t (like in the first movie when Walt tells Marta they’ll have the money to help her and it occurs to her, “No, I have the money to help myself”). It’s something we all know by now and it frustrates SO many of us. Blanc gives people like Marta and Helen the keys, they just need to unlock the door. And his support gives them the confidence they might not otherwise have to open that door themselves.
It’s something I really hope they continue with in future Benoit Blanc movies. He’s the world’s greatest detective, but that reputation carries with it its own privilege. He is a shiny dangling set of keys everyone pays attention to while someone else can go do the things he can’t. He can figure out the clues, but he can’t always “snoop” without drawing attention. So while he’s getting onto Miles Bron’s private island without an invite, no one is noticing Andi might seem a little … off. No one goes after her when she storms out of the party. No one checks to see if she’s really dead when they think she’s shot.
If someone else solves the crime, it’s not a Benoit Blanc movie. But getting justice? He leaves the most satisfying part to the character who most deserves to get it from the killer.

engine room fix-it, part #5724
Okay, stop me if this is crap or if everyone else figured this out three years ago. In third semester, Akechi’s key piece of evidence that he’s dead in the true reality is his memory gap between the events of the engine room and meeting back up with Joker.
Here’s the flaw in that:
Maruki’s reality is a reality where Akechi died in the engine room and was revived.
It’s not just a reality where Akechi was always alive—the hole in his memory actually proves that. Think about it. Do Wakaba and Okumura seem like they’ve lost time? Do we think post-bad ending Pleasant Boy has a hole in his head? No, he doesn’t. Because reality was altered so that he never committed his crimes and never died.
But that isn’t the case for the Akechi we meet in the third semester. Sure, he exists in a world where his crimes never happened. But he still remembers them. He exists in a world where he never, supposedly, died. But he still remembers it.
The point of the third semester Maruki world is to give Joker a chance to accept Maruki’s reality. As part of that, Maruki gives Akechi back to Joker as a bribe—as someone who also knows things are different, someone he can work alongside. Maruki does not just give them the opportunity to solve the puzzle; he also creates the puzzle.
And how does Maruki create that puzzle, that reality where Akechi supposedly comes back from the dead? He looks into the heads of the Phantom Thieves and creates it based on their belief.
It doesn’t even have to be complicated. He doesn’t have to recreate Akechi from spare parts—which is why he acts nothing like any of them would expect. All Maruki has to say to himself on Christmas Eve, to create the third semester we see, is “Let this be a world where Goro Akechi, who is dead, is now alive”. Even if he just actualises Joker’s wish, that wish only has to be “I wish Akechi didn’t die a week ago, I wish we could have worked together instead of against each other”.
And Akechi is dropped in Shibuya with a hole in his mind. An inexplicable hole. Because if reality was changed so that he was always alive, as was the case for e.g. Wakaba, there wouldn’t be a hole at all.
There’s also the fact that Maruki is a manipulative fuck—not to state that as a negative, some of my best blorbos are manipulative fucks (cough). Sure, he says “Oh, I didn’t want to seem like I was blackmailing you with Akechi’s life”. But he does it. It’s so convenient for Maruki to be able to say “In the end, if you don’t do what I want, your friend will die and it will be your fault c:”. It’s so convenient if Akechi really is dead.
What Maruki doesn’t get, with his distorted belief that pain and loss must be avoided no matter what, is that Akechi himself won’t go for his bullshit. Not to save his life. And he won’t let Joker do it, either.

Watching the scenes where Mr Satan and Buu bond on Kai and. Gajeicnc. Akskdjsjw......
1. Mr Satan has a silver tongue and a heart of gold. He is so full of precious metals. Becasue he is precious 💛
2. Yes it's a rat-like thing to parade in there like hes gonna beat him up, and then just become his poopboy servantboy. But we can all see how the situation called for No Alternative.
3. BUT THE WORLD NEEDED A HERO ... and THAT'S the hero it needed..!! It couldnt have a hero who could take out Majin Buu. So the next best thing was someone who could tame Majin Buu. It looks snakelike becasue it is - BUT THAT'S THE HERO THAT THE WORLD NEEDED!!! He isnt doing it the way he said he would, but Mr Satan IS saving the world!!!
4. But here is what is so remarkable... Mr Satan has the softest most golden heart. He couldn't blow up Majin Buu and the dog. Detonating the dynamite would have done nothing of course, but he thought it would have done something, and he couldnt justify blowing up the scene. It's not right to hurt a puppy. And they looked so peaceful together. You could call him a coward, or say he has a weak constitution. But in the most dire of circumstance, he shined with the most courageous and valuable thing ... An inclination for peace and joy. He couldn't break that up. Two wrongs dont make a right.
5. Mr Satan isnt all cowardly. He has a list of shortcomings, and most of them come to rise when hes wrapped up in the vice of his cape - hes king Leo The Lion and he gets carried away. But he is still a just man. When those two random button-pushers came and shot the dog, Mr Satan went over there and took them out himself. He spat on the ground. "You make me sick." He knows the difference between a senseless fight and a just one. Violence will only solve what it wroughts, as in, it is useful only in defense. It's a crime against nature to abuse and kill; and it's a further crime against nature to not give that force its due push-back. Actions have consequences. Goodness isnt for those who cant be touched by its meaning. Attacking those guys was the only appropriate recourse, and Mr Satan knew that. He had just told Majin Buu to stop destroying, and he didnt see his own violence as a contradiction to that - becasue it wasnt.
6. MR SATAN IS THE BRAVEST MAN ON EARTH: he took a look at the beast who was responsible for the death of 80% of the world's population at this point, and he had the courage and strength to EXTEND UNDERSTANDING AND COMPASSION. Call it Stockholm, call it a desperation for hope, CALL IT IDIOCY, but just as well you can call it bravery. He saw how Buu had been misled by his creators, and he saw his potential for good, and he didnt shy away from that. It has horribly difficult moral implications, but Mr Satan didnt tie himself up in the feckless philosophy - he saw good and he stuck to that with conviction. End of story. That's all that matters. Mr Satan is the type of character who can be stubborn, regressive, and foolishly blind, but when the world needed him most, he answered to love.
Maybe hes shallow, or afraid, or cowardly, or delusional - but he's also exceptionally resilient to show up to this with empathy and a soft heart.
This is why he is the best dragon ball character ....

These last weeks have brought out a lot to evaluate for me, observing, listening and learning. Sometimes drowning in the pain and horror.
I realize that I cannot fully support and join the pro-palestinian leftist community because of their cold-heartedness in normalizing cruelty as decolonization. The videos I have seen won't let me say "this is normal and justified". Yet, I understand that no rebellion is bloodless. You cannot label every Palestinian who grew up seeing suffering and suffering himself and then picked up a weapon to stand up against this oppression asl terrorist. Still, I hold the principle that there is a difference between giving a full permit to any violence and trying to be as humane as possible. I think as revolutionary leftists we should always understand this.
I cannot say that I'm a zionist anymore. I thinj and genuinely want Jewish people around the world to have a safe home to live in without opression and discrimination with constantly hoping for the mercy of the landowners that are native and the majority of the place. But can a country be a safe home if it is built and exists on the non-stop blood, displacement and dehumanizing someone who happened to exist there before? Wouldn't such place be unsafe by default? I'm convinced that Jewish people deserve to have a home to call their own without constantly being involved in war and oppression, without someone constantly questioning their right to live there.
What's simple and what you always have to keep in mind - human suffering and death is not normal. Not excusable. Not justified. Bot collateral damage. Not revenge. Not retaliation. It's wrong. It's not allowed. Point blank.
But if we want to get to an actual solution, we shouldn't take into account all the factors and nuances, which requires complexity. We cannot ignore that a lot Jewish people came as refugees and aren't able to just "go back", that many of them were expulsed from Islamic countries. We cannot ignore that when it comes to the peace pacts, Palestinians we're promised to get a full control over the West Bank in 1995 by Oslo accords and by now it didn't happen. They still live in ghetto reservations and the majority of West Bank is under Israeli control while every day we see armed settlers or idf take away someone's house. We cannot ignore that terrorism doesn't come out of nowhere. Having a difficult childhood and a poor background doesn't save one from being accountable for a crime, but if you want to reduce crime rates in a society, you have to do something about the conditions people live in and don't be delusional that it's only their personal attitude that is a problem. Going back to the subject, we also cannot ignore that 7 millions of Jewish Israelis exist and we cannot just blatantly force them to go somewhere else. We have to take all into account. If want a free secular Palestine where all the citizens are equal, we have to think about how to transform the populations of two countries from their current state to the one we want.
As an anarchist I drive a conclusion: if your free Palestine requires killing and displacing Jews, fuck your free Palestine. If your safe Israel requires oppressing and genociding Palestinians, fuck your safe Israel. But don't get delusional and forget that it's Palestinians who have an x10 times bigger death toll, who are locked without food, water, shelter and medication, and its Israel that has disproportionately more power.
Support Palestinians. Show your authorities that their genocide will never be forgiven and forgotten. Show the society that there is never excuse to loose humanity. Support Israelis that are genuinely against the genocidal government, this is important to solve the issue(contact Israeli anarchists, socialists and leftists in general). Support Arabs and Jews in your place, don't let hate have an inch of it.
P. S. Please, follow @wearenotjustnumbers2 and read what they post.

Paul Bunyan: The Invention Of An American Legend GN - Noah Van Sciver & Marlena Myles
Did you know that a mainstay of American folk culture was in fact created as an advertising ploy? Few people realize that Paul Bunyan, the legendary lumberjack, and his blue ox are the product of corporate marketing by a highly industrialized industry. Cartoonist Noah Van Sciver shows us the myth creation as real life marketing man extraordinaire W.B. Laughead spins ever more wondrous tall tales. Van Sciver's story is bracketed by rich contributions from contemporary Native artists and storytellers with a very different connection to the land that the Bunyan myths often conceal. Readers will see how a lumberjack hero, a quintessential American fantasy, captures the imagination but also serves to paper over the seizure of homeland from First Peoples and the laying bare of America's northern forests. It's a tall tale with deep roots... in profit-making!

Skeleanor The Decomposer HC - Emily Ettlinger
An instantly charming and vivid chapter-book graphic novel, starring a music-obsessed skeleton, Skeleanor, and her quest to find her sound (and her confidence) by debut creator Emily Ettlinger. Skeleanor loves music more than life itself. There's just one problem: She has a bit more rattle than rhythm at the moment. No matter what type of instrument she plays-from the fiddle to the xylobone-she always seems to scare the people of Little Casketon away. But with the Little Casketon Summershine festival coming up, and the town band missing a player, maybe Skeleanor (along with the help of her best friend, Batima) could show people her skills and finally take center stage.

Vampirella/Dracula RAGE #1 - Christopher Priest, Christian Rosado & Lucio Parrillo
NO MORE MS. NICE VAMPIRE!
They're coming for her baby. They're going to murder him before her eyes. And then she's going to kill every last damn one of them. Picking up where Vampirella: Year One left off! In an unprecedented turn for our titular heroine, Vampirella/Dracula: Rage presents Vampirella as you've never seen her before. Inconsolable grief yields to irreducible rage as Vampirella tracks the cultists who threaten her son across Europe and America, unsettling political and economic alliances and unraveling the global network of the baby's father - Dracula.
In a macabre exchange of norms, it is Dracula, the Lord of Vampires, hunting the elusive Vampiri, trying to save Vampirella from herself - or, more precisely, to save her from becoming like him. To this end, Dracula recruits Victory, once Vampirella's closest friend, to act as his ersatz Renfield while they try (and fail) to anticipate the next moves of a woman whose anger has now completely consumed her.
