When I was young and naive, I would giggle to myself thinking about Jervis killing the imposter Mad Hatter because he couldn't handle someone else kinning Mad Hatter, too, but then I began to think that's not quite it, is it? Because think about it, if they were both kinnies of Lewis Carroll's Mad Hatter, then why on earth would imposter Hatter adopt the name "Jervis Tetch"? In his universe, the real Jervis Tetch is just a random guy. Why steal the identity of just some dude? Furthermore, why doesn't the imposter seem interested in Alice in Wonderland at all - only hats? Simple: imposter Mad Hatter is not kinning Lewis Carroll's Mad Hatter, he's kinning Jervis Tetch.

In my verse the imposter is alive and well, but at a different ward at Arkham than the rest of the rogues for his own safety (the kinnie drama just got too violent).

Headcanon: Hatter II was actually the first Hatter, but focused solely on the "hat" aspect of it with none of the "Alice book" aspects. Tetch, seeking to use his tech to indulge in his Wonderland fantasies, knew he could be a better Mad Hatter, so usurped the title. Using his mind control tech, Tetch broke his predecessor's mind and had him thrown away in Arkham for the rest of his life.

DC Comics created two villains named The Mad Hatter.

1. A one-off gangster.

2. A villain that was in a TV series and lasted 25 years in comics.

A writer killed off the second character and wrote that he was impersonating the first character.

So hilarious.

Most of these characters have been assigned DC roles based on their personalities, regardless of gender (except for Superboy and Bizarro since they're clones of Superman so have to be the same gender as him)! I included some Rogues, League of Assassins, Outlaws, Teen Titans and Justice Leaguers because the Batfam interact with them a lot.

In my mind, Kyoko Kirigiri is together with Makoto Naegi and has been for the long term but her as the Bat and Celestia Ludenberg as Catwoman share some flirtatious banter.

Hajime Hinata as Robin 2 died and came back, and when he did he came back different. How much you want to lean into Jason Todd's backstory or Hajime Hinata's and whether you want to include Izuru Kamukuru is up to you.

Kaito Momota may or may not have had an unsuccessful romantic relationship with Shuichi when he was Spoiler and Shuichi was Robin 3. This can be prior to Shuichi meeting Kokichi or Robin 3 and Stray could have had some playful banter going on during this time (this works because Shuichi actually dates civilian Kokichi, which could be after he and Kaito break up). Kaito could be with Maki now!

Yes, this character assignment does mean that Masaru Daimon is Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu's best friend. Yes, that is hilarious.

I was running out of DR characters near the end so I started swapping some around to find suitable Justice Leaguers. Masaru was originally Captain Marvel but then that only left Kotoko Utsugi as an option for Superboy 2 and I thought Fuyuhiko would hate her. So, Masaru became Superboy 2 and Nagisa Shingetsu Captain Marvel. Byakuya Togami was originally assigned as Lucius Fox, the manager of WE, but I had to swap him to Green Arrow because he was just too perfect for that!

I love jervis so much it's not even funny, but I know he wouldn't be able to look at me the same if he saw I downed tea raw (i.e., hot water, tea bag, that's it nothing else added) on the regular 😔😔

Like kidnapped at a tea party, going along with it alright and drinking tea, but he finds it so perplexing that I don't add sugar, milk, anything with it— "civilized guest with barbaric qualities"

Reaction to RWBY Crew Commentary V9

Alright, as is tradition at this point, got my copy of the Blu Ray so let's get started.

Okay, first of all, before I even hop into the commentary, I love that the title screen for the menu is Ruby falling through that mural in the OP. That is... That is so cool man! Whoever thought of that... I love you. You're a genius.

So we start off with Kerry, Eddy, Laurie (hope I spelled that right). And addressing how they had to work mostly from home on this volume and the challenges that caused.

Yeah, quick reunion was the right call. I mean, we did the Team RWBY split for two volumes (4 and 5) and then again in V8. Don't keep the girls apart again.

Little origins! Give me! Someone that starts how Ruby started...

I mean... yeah, I assumed Ruby knew about Penny from Weiss. Like... duh.

Same peeps for episode 2 but also with Paula? Again, I hope I heard that right.

Return of Blake the Book Nerd.

Yang and Blake kind of dig the Ever After, Weiss hates it, and Ruby is lost in her thoughts.

Luci improvised Little's little song.

Oh, Yang might still think this is a dream so nothing here matters... That's an idea. Everyone grieves differently...

Man I love Weiss in this episode.

Chapter 5: Kerry, Eddy, Paula, Kiersi!

Cat is dismissive of WBY. Focuses only on Ruby.

The Blacksmith: The Ever After itself is now reaching out to Ruby.

Walking the line between the audience knowing that Ruby needs help and WBY not quite understanding how bad it is.

Making sure the emblem wasn't on Ruby's model after was a pain.

"Oh no, he's hot."

Episode 6: Kerry, Eddy, Yssa, Laura.

The difference between Jaune having already lived for many years with this guilt in the Ever After and RWBY who are still fresh.

How protective Kerry is of the Bee scene is amazing.

There was an idea that the vision Alyx saw was that she saw that someone in her party was going to keep her from returning home, and it ultimately is herself before the Cat kills her.

Ya'll have already seen other posts about Kerry and crew's thoughts on the Bee scene and what it means for the Yang and Blake so I won't go into all that because, yeah, can't say it better.

"They were actually in front of each other the whole time." Excuse me!

"Now she has to step up again." ....Ow.

Episode 7: Kerry, Eddy, Miles, Dustin? I think that's what I heard.

How the meeting went: "Well he can't have been doing nothing, that would be really disappointing." *Beat of silence* "Oh, that would be really disappointing." Evil geniuses.

Stuck in the pattern of trying to be the hero. Both incredibly busy and doing nothing.

"He's more lost than ever."

Fighting on a hill. I'd never considered the complications of that either.

Miles and Lindsey kill this scene man. It's so good.

Episode 8 (oh boy): Kerry, Eddy, Miles, Paula, Kiersi.

Had to cut an episode due to scheduling and budget. Scary to have to rework that.

Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

The flowers on the Tea Cups are Forget-Me-Nots.

Imposter Syndrome.

Neo landed on the Brother's Acre.

"Neither one of them won that fight." Neo and Ruby.

Episode 9: Kerry, Eddy, Yssa, Dustin, Kiersi.

Blacksmith is a therapist.

Weiss is the best, true.

What do the characters want?

Episode 10: Kerry, Eddy, Yssa, Kiersi, Dustin.

Aw, their kids contributed some of the background drawings for Yang and Ruby's room.

Furious Cat.

"She's the self that chose herself." "She emerges herself but different."

"I'm so happy." I love how much they love this show.

"How do we not redeem her but give her this sort of neutral path?"

Oh man, I'm tearing up before Somewhat even shows up.

Somewhat is no longer defined by having one purpose.

Dude, they keep talking about not wanting this to be filler so they had the backstory of the Brothers but I will always stand by that if the characters learn and grow as people then it will never be filler. So from the beginning this was never going to be filler.

"One small kindness, in one small moment, led to such a marvelous transformation." That line always destroys me.

Whelp, that's a wrap on the commentary for V9. Now... we wait.

It's that time again: thoughts on The Man Who Stopped Laughing #5!

Spoilers below, of course, and a reference to suicide and some definite body horror.

If there was one thing I didn't expect this issue to start with, it's Joker emulating his boyfrenemy.

The implied bat pun. The exposed midriff. … I def saw fan art like this once.

So it's been a few days since Joker escaped the hospital, and his getup indicates he's been investigating who his imposter is (if he is an imposter). And now he's in one of his old hideouts wondering why the Mad Hatter has set up shop there.

And of course since the Mad Hatter is usually relegated to Creepy Weirdo, there are some unfortunate kids here. Joker isn't worried about their welfare, but I'm pretty sure Jervis soon won't be in a state to do them any harm.

Jervis says he got the key from Other Joker, who is back in town, and Jason's own investigation on where his clown quarry soon leads him to the same information, after ruining Killer Moth's night.

So the Joker who ran off to LA is still seen as the real one, and word has spread there's an imposter running around.

Uh oh! Whatever Jervis told Joker, it's leading him to a trap! But what helpful information for Ja—

LOL Poor Moth.

Over in the trap, we see some fun effects with the speech bubble.

That's no reason for me to think Protag Joker is the real one but I do, okay, I'll take any hint

It's not a subtle trap, is it?

Joker looking at himself like 😍

And then…

Lmaoooooooooo of course he did. Joker smelled a trap, of course, and even got a lock to keep the other Joker inside so they could burn together. He says he doesn't want to die but boy does Joker always have doubtful ways of showing it.

There's an interlude with Jason and Stephanie, in which she talks about Bruce like he's in the city.

So I guess this takes place before the current Batman storyline. Or after. Or in some amorphous space. Maybe concurrently with the Punchline comic? Does DC actually give a crap about continuity?

Meanwhile back at the fire, the Other Joker's dialogue gets a little suspect.

Protag Joker's had a water gun this whole time, and I thought it had gasoline in it, but…

Well, acid works fine, and it gets him out of the cage. Though I assume he's not gonna jump out the new hole in the wall.

Back at the coffee meetup, we learn Bruce doesn't think Protag Joker is the real deal. :(

Which implies that Bruce is aware of the Joker situation and just left Other Joker to do his thing in LA?? That raises questions that I sure hope get answered, because huh??

The fire gets big enough for Jason and Stephanie to notice it, as Joker walks out of the building and tracks his double down an open grate.

I like the detail that Joker slides down the ladder. :)

And alright, here we go! Time to get some answers!

DAMMIT, JASON

Yeah, sure, Joker got run over by a train. See you next issue, buddy.

Well, I'm glad Jason got to shoot a Joker copy in a good comic.

Oh whoa WHOA! The answer! Other Joker has been Clayface all the long! Well, that's a little overdone, but I've been wanting to know—

DAMMIT, ROSENBERG! Why must you taunt me!

But we end on this amazing beachside image:

Okay, I forgive you, Rosenberg. The speedo, the flowy robe, the hat, the muscled manservant with the fruity drink… Di Giandomenico, I love you.

So apparently Other Joker is going back to Gotham for real now, but the end-title implies we won't see a real Joker-to-Joker confrontation next month. :( But I can deal so long as I'm still having a fun time.

Alright, backer time: we have yet another woman Joker is trying to woo, and yet another strange way to produce Joker copies.

Here the uninterested woman is Giganta, and my interest in this trope is waning, not helped by this joke:

Joker's been pursuing women in most of these backers, and I've been able to set that aside because they're so ridiculous, but it makes it hard to see this pun as unconsequential. I'm gonna stare at that last panel in the main story to feel better.

There's no mpreg to be found in this backer, just Joker working regular jobs to convince Giganta he's not evil. And when that doesn't work…

He calls up Etrigan, who doesn't think making a clown not evil is a good use of his time.

The demon gets his revenge, though, when he tricks Joker into reading the wrong spell.

I put this into Google translate and got:

"that his hands, head, and feet may be destroyed by worms, cancer, and vermin, and his medulous members may be destroyed"

Which sorta tracks with what happens, which is that Joker grows as big as Giganta, and then we get some body horror!!

Giganta, uh, remains uninterested and leaves with Etrigan.

I guess we can look at it as all of Joker's evil squeezing out of him like popped zits. 😬 But the marks are still left behind and so are all the little vermin. But at least they're supportive?

I have a feeling Fox News won't be interested in this one.

Main Story

Opening is nice

Black Mask before Jason? That's interesting

Killer Croc helping Black Mask was a surprise

I don't think Roman threatening Waylon is good idea

It feels like Roman's normal voice is higher and he tries to make it deeper when intimidating people

Well at least Batman didn't let Croc die

Lately I’ve been wanting to illustrate a few ideas that came to mind, although they’re pretty much stolen, but still, I wanted to draw them.

Since I prefer Jervis’ TAS design but love the TNBA one, I thought I’d use it to represent the Impostor Mad Hatter so that I also draw him more often lol
