These screenshots I took in Blender are the final product of a commission I worked on for over a year, of my client's planet Ayrum. These represent the planet as it appears at the Northern Spring Equinox, at various angles and different times of day. This project had multiple phases and produced many maps and figures, so I'll be making multiple posts about it over the course of multiple days, working from the earliest results up to the images used in these screenshots.
Tumblr media
First, the tectonic history sequence, covering about 600 million years of activity. The colors of continental crust in the gif's top half represent which plate it will belong to in the end, and the colors used in the bottom half represent what plates they belong to at the time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the tectonic history settled, it's easier to determine what the topography should look like. The two greyscale elevation maps start from the lowest trench depth and from sea level respectively, and the color-graded elevation map has dry land differentiated from bodies of water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dipping into Blender once again, with some screenshots where I used the color-graded elevation map as the image texture and the greyscale elevation map as the displacement texture, to emphasize the topography. This will be all for today, but there is much more to come. These maps were made for the user @umbrace-ramble, to whom I am very thankful for this commission and all the experience it inspired me to gain. Rendered in Photopea with the aid of Blender, screenshots taken in Blender, November 2022-January 2024

may i receive your rant on why every videogame ever chooses to have columnar basalt in places basalt should not be, like in unsuspecting caves or just dotting beaches with no volcano in sight... because god, that gets me going.
Let me preface this rant by saying, I love when videogames at least try, like I can look at a rock and actually say, "hey that's columnar basalt and not *generic rock texture*" (Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's texture shortened my lifespan). So generally speaking, if I can tell at least vaguely that someone googled photos of rocks when creating a game I am more happy than not, but!
Tumblr media
My GOODNESS! I think I could extend this rant to just videogame cave systems in general! Like, caves are only formed in limestones and marbles (And some limey sandstones and salt deposits), BUT for some reason we are mining and finding Rubies? Emeralds? Metals? These caves they are depicting are clearly just supposed to be these natural caves and not abandoned mines, which would give them some leeway to put whatever desirable gemstone or ore they wanted in the game, but they don't choose that for some reason, and it is beyond me why!
And can we talk about how all of these caves got there in the first place? Like limestone only forms in marine environments! Are you telling me that the entire continent you designed was underwater to the extent to have a spiraling cave system forming at least every ten miles of trail explored (Skyrim I am looking at you)? And how acidic is your rain? Are we experiencing an industrial evolution? I CANNOT, also in what situation are these random massive quartz crystals in otherwise fine-grained material forming? Like one, Who would actually leave that laying there? No one. And two, how is this forming? Like are you trying to say this formed after the cave was created or what? If that's the case the more likely mineral would be calcite or gypsum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My little bird brain can't wrap my head around what they are trying to do here! (The second image is from ESO and I give it a lot of lenience and to be fair they are trying to depict these are geodes that are surrounded by a massive basalt but they are also showing stalactites and stalagmites which aren't in basalts so it still gets points docked).
But yes! Seeing inaccurate geology, columnar basalts included can take you out of a game so fast, same with the imaginary ores that are kind of based off real metals. I think I would be more ok with completely fake names, because then at least I wouldn't have anything to associate it with.
That being said! I will end this rant by pointing out videogames that when either I was playing or my fiancé was playing I was pleasantly surprised by the geology/accurate textures.
ESO- elder scrolls online, I know I just docked it points above, but genuinely they do an amazing job depicting different rock types to the point that on their islands they have limestones. with. fossils. I nearly cried. Of course they still have random metal seems everywhere but it is an MMO and resources are necessary so I can ignore that as long as they keep making accurate landscapes.
Titanfall- I will just add an image because it will speak volumes
Tumblr media
like does that shale/siltstone have ripple marks in the middle right hand side? beautiful. amazing. perfect. chief's kiss. (Apex also does a decent job which is a battle royale game that takes place after the Titanfall games, the textures aren't as good obviously but you can definitely tell what kind of rocks are at each map)
3. Horizon Zero Dawn- the graphics in this game are just genuinely impeccable and it takes place in the US but after the collapse of civilization. In a lot of ways, I think it made it a bit easier for the designers, but they still did an amazing job depicting the rocks accurately! I believe there is a Youtube video which compares the actual locations to the videogame locations.
Tumblr media
some obviously tilted sedimentary rocks
Tumblr media
sandstone arches
@cosmic-tuna please add more games if you know any!

It's a bit of a random question, but I'm simply curious, how did you start falling in love with the Horned King/what's your origin story with him? Only if you want to share it of course^^ Feel free to also just generally gush or ramble about him!
(also btw I think it's awesome that we share him as an f/o now, I think subconsciously I already knew for a while that I'd fall for him eventually, it was just a matter of time he's just too gorgeous💕)
Ok this ask has given me the warm fuzzies for several weeks so thank you and I guess I should probably answer this now huh -
(also every time someone else pops up who f/o's him I'm Absolutely Delighted and am so glad I helped facilitate your decent into lich simpery)
I'll do IRL and self insert shenanigans, so IRL first:
- the first time I watched the black cauldron I'd be ...about 8 or 9?
- one thing you sincerely must understand about me is that I am, unapologetically, unequivocally, unexpectedly....a weenie.
- much as I adore the spooky and the strange, any film that veers into remotely scary territory, or horror in general, that shit scars me down to the cellular level.
- Power to everyone who can disengage/absorb that stuff healthily because I sure as fuck don't and doubt I ever will. Anyway.
- mum buys me the black cauldron and thinks nothing of it. It's Disney, right?
- anyway yeah uh suffice to say boy golly gee I'd never seen *that* many skeletons animated before. Think my little brother started crying at some point.
- but honestly, something about the films mad dichotomy of attempted cutesy fantasy with grim dark backdrop and off kilter humour enamoured me. And I found myself wanting *more* of the dark parts of the film.
- (still early the full cauldron born scenes were cut. So goddamn salty)
- the Horned King became a lynchpin of fascination, something about his eerie voice, his apathetic yet menacing mannerisms and his degraded appearance really drew me in. Esp his summoning and death scenes.
- I think I started drawing skeletons soon after and they're still the easiest thing for me to draw.
- over decade later when I was depressed as all fuck, I rewatched the film and found myself only really enjoying his scenes, in part because he was the only relatable villain to me at the time. (Eternally tired, quietly dramatic, quick to anger and dismissal. A smorgasbord of things to distract myself from feeling like I was actively decomposing too at the time. Brains are wild.)
- now I like to imagine quietly helping him get to a better place same as I've managed to do :) who needs therapy when you have imaginary lich time.
As for self insert funky times:
- rather than imagining myself in the dark ages, mostly because despite living in the UK my knowledge of that time period is just awful, I imagine a modern setting
- crucially tho the events of the film still happened exactly as shown.
- in this setting my s/I has moved to Wales and accidentally rediscovered the -broken- cauldron, and the remains of the castle. Time itself rusted the old thing and it cracked, letting HK's disheveled soul slip free.
- my S/I is an amateur ecologist, with interest in geology and paleontology and history. (So just me. Straight up me. I can't even pretend here) Once she figures out she's effectively haunted, HK's presence is akin to a field day.
- will she attempt to resurrect him properly? Eh who knows. Maybe. I'm a real fucking sucker for ghosts, esp partial possession or soul bonds.
- magic exists still in this setting, it's just mostly forgotten and thus dismissed. Of course my s/I has latent magic because of course, and I love the idea of HK teaching her as a pseudo bonding activity.
- love just watching HK be bamboozled and overwhelmed by the modern world too. Show this lich a toaster someone-
- very low stakes very chill, just two lonely fools trying to rebuild their 'lives' together. Probably the most weirdly cottage core of my selfships if I'm honest. With more dead things.
So yeah that's pretty much it! Thanks again for the lovely ask, and feel free to tag me in anything lich related 🥰

Digital terrain models zero in on Martian surface
Picture soaring over a rugged canyon on another world, strapped into an imaginary hang glider. Or getting a bird's eye view of craters that stretch on for miles and following along the same paths as the robotic rovers that have explored the surface of Mars. All of this is possible—virtually—thanks to specialists at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
A team at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory has created realistic terrain models of Mars' surface using specialized software and high-resolution images taken from space. Known as digital terrain models, or DTMs, these renderings allow mission planners to examine landing sites for landers and rovers and scout routes across the alien terrain, laying the groundwork for ongoing and future Mars exploration campaigns.
Creating a DTM begins with high-resolution images taken with the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE, a UArizona-led camera instrument aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or MRO, which has captured detailed views of the red planet's surface since 2006.
Unlike a consumer-grade digital camera, HiRISE does not take "snapshots" of a scene—rather, it relies on a method called push-broom photography. As the orbiter passes over Mars, the camera takes a long scan, producing pictures used to create DTMs, which are topography maps and capture the shape of planetary surfaces.
"DTMs take a long time to make," says HiRISE outreach coordinator Ari Espinoza, "so the fact we've been able to crank them out in such high numbers underscores the value that HIRISE still has—especially because no one else is making such high-resolution images of Mars' terrain."
HiRISE can resolve objects as small as three feet, about the size of a coffee table. Thus, HiRISE can reveal potential snags and obstacles in landscapes that may look deceptively easy to navigate when viewed from a distance. The sheer amount of DTMs from UArizona has made them a sought-after resource used to examine changes in Mars' geology, find safe landing sites and navigate rover routes.
For each DTM, two images of the same area are necessary. HiRISE captures each image on a separate orbit and at a different angle, and combining the images results in a so-called stereo pair.
Essentially, the set of images making up a stereo pair mimics the left eye and right eye, creating a sense of depth, explains HiRISE scientist and DTM lead Sarah Sutton.
"When you look at the images together with special glasses—like the red-blue glasses often handed out at science fairs—it allows your brain to make a 3D image," she says.
The stereo pairs are then used to produce the DTMs—an intensive process that involves a coding component, examining the actual images taken by HiRISE and editing the DTMs.
The program launched in 2008 with Sutton being the sole producer of DTMs. Thanks to a growing team that includes student workers, the effort is on track to complete more than 150 for this year alone, a record. September saw the completion of a major milestone when the number of total DTMs passed the 1,000 mark.
"Production has gotten a lot faster because we have better targeting of stereo pairs, more automation in our process, and we are continually refining our methods," Sutton says.
Editing especially requires a lot of hands-on work. For example, stark differences in lighting, such as a dark shadow covering one side of a crater, can cause errors that need to be evaluated by a human pair of eyes.
"In such cases, the computer doesn't register what is actually on the surface, and so it makes things up that we have to correct manually," says Branden Gosse, a recent UA graduate who now works as a research technician for HiRISE.
During HiRISE's repeated passes over the same area, it sometimes witnesses changes on the Martian surface that provide valuable scientific clues about dynamic processes, Sutton explains.
"We can observe seasonal changes in frost cover or dunes moving across the land," she says. "That's only possible with DTMs, since they correct for differences due to the individual images being taken from slightly different optical perspectives."
On top of depicting surface changes, DTMs help Mars rovers navigate terrain that could be dangerous. While small, sharp rocks are too small for DTMs to resolve, they can effectively display hazardous sand dunes that rover wheels can get stuck in. In collaboration with cameras aboard rovers, DTMs can even enable almost real-time navigation of rovers' routes.
Making space science tangible
The feats accomplished through DTMs have been made possible through the scores of UArizona students who have produced them over the years, culminating in 1,000 DTMs made from a pool of almost 8,000 stereo pair images. Although DTM production has a steep learning curve, the benefits are immense and planetary science gets more tangible, according to Sutton.
"DTM production gives students the opportunity to see how space science really works outside a classroom," she says.
Simultaneously, the HiRISE team learns from students' new perspectives, and students learn how to work with the software, according to Max Cabrera, a student worker majoring in physics and astronomy.
"Last semester, there would be this overlap where I'd use the techniques from DTM production in class and vice versa," he says. "There was this nice back and forth that helped me hone my edge for coding."
Even with a long history under their belt, DTMs cover a very small percent of Mars' surface—less than 1% or 2%—which highlights the extent of contributions HiRISE can continue to make for as long as the hardware lasts. With students and scientists hard at work in the DTM lab, the topography maps are bound to secure the success of Mars missions—and possibly even human space exploration in the not-too-distant future.
According to Alfred McEwen, the mission's principal investigator, "DTMs are critical for finding future landing sites for humans or robots as well as monitoring safety and what is happening on the surface."
"Researchers for other moons and planets wish they had something like HiRISE and the MRO orbiting their field of study," McEwen says. "High-resolution images are highly desired pretty much anywhere that you have a solid surface."
Aside from HiRISE, McEwen serves as deputy principal investigator for the Europa Imaging System, or EIS, on NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft, scheduled for launch next year. Similar to the flyovers over Mars' surface, the Clipper mission will involve studying Jupiter's moon Europa, the sixth-largest moon in the solar system, during a series of flybys.
"As the spacecraft orbits Jupiter and makes close passes to Europa, we hope to get the same kind of stunningly beautiful pictures of this icy world as we do of Mars with HiRISE," McEwen says.

More Random/Useless Muse Facts
Tumblr media
Did they believe in Santa?: Muu still does. I'm seriously not joking either. Being that he still wholeheartedly believes in fairies, he has found himself continuing to entertain the possibility that Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny also exist even if in universes excluding his own.
Were they a dinosaur or rock kid?: Neither really. He enjoyed dinosaur based medias better than those centered on geology, yes, however, he was so completely entralled with everything as a child that his honed in interests were usually more niche than either of the two. If anything, he was more of an alien and monsters kind of kid.
Bugs or slimy critters?: Absolutely both of them. Bugs and frogs are most certainly loved by him dearly.
Do they fidget? How?: The only fidget Muu does with the most consistency his is imaginary tail wag. One would imagine he'd have far more on behalf of him being autistic; however, he's never really been one to stim. He always worried about being as seen as weird if he did so, leading him to disconnect himself with that part of his disability. He's definitely far more guilty of presenting a nervous stammer than an anxious fidget.
What were they frequently in trouble for as a child?: Unwillingness to share, which usually came out in the form of biting or hitting other children that tried to play with his toys (his brother included). Other instances included messing with things that were not his, which one would imagine he did not get the hypocrisy of his complaints whenever he was in fact chastised for this behavior.
What underwear do they like?: I've talked about it on this blog already, but I have no qualms about mentioning it once more to those who may be unaware if this tidbit. Muu actually wears strictly women's underwear. And not for any particularly dirty reason either, so keep those minds out of the gutter. Instead, he just likes to on behalf of the closest and safest people in his life to him are women. In his mind, to dress like them is to maybe even embody them in a manner where he might even be able to offer himself a similar feeling of comfort in his own company. Of the styles available, the one he would perhaps sport the most is the traditional brief. Complete coverage along his anatomy, but not high enough that the fabric could be spotted above his pants. And seamless is a must for completely wearability no matter what he is adorned in that day.
Designs on clothing or no?: Impartial. It really comes down to each individual piece. Usually he's a fan of one plain article of clothing going alongside something containing a design. Not usually design on design unless he's really trying to make a statement. Not usually is it plain on top of plain. He'd rather be more adventurous than that.
Birthmarks?: None. Know that this is subject to change. In the many years I've had him as a muse, I've been very indecisive over what and where I'd like his birthmark to be. When I know, I'll for sure share it with everyone.
Do they have good self control?: Not really. One being that he is easily persuaded by those around him to comply to their standards in exchange for friendship. He also is emotionally impulsive just as often as he is overly self aware, so really all is fair game.
Favorite franchise?: Lilo and Stitch, the Curious George films, Moshi monsters most definitely, and Marvel. Spiderman and Guardians of the Galaxy are at the top of the list regarding the final option.
Do they re-enact scenarios in the shower?: Always. He also tends to age regress in the shower in the hopes his true inner child will have input on the situations at play that he hadn't considered prior.
Do they tell the waiter that their order is wrong?: Yes, but he promises he always does so in a kind manner. He's vegan for the sake of refusing to contribute to the harm of animals, so of course he will not ignore that moral for the sake of keeping peace. He also never deducts from a tip a percentage for every incorrect aspect of a meal. Logically does he understand that a cook made his food, so really why take it out on the staff caught in the middle that is simply just doing their job.
Stairs or elevator?: Stairs. Elevators somewhat freak him out. Plus, he can get places faster on foot than risking getting caught in an elevator with multiple needing multiple destinations at one time.
Are they an exaggerator when telling stories?: Not intentionally. Muu simply feels all feelings at an exaggerated rate compared to everyone else. What may seem entirely sound to him is dramatic to someone else.

The wasteland of your desire
The dreamland of your use
video installation, mixed media, drawings, found objects, 2023
Video work presenting the body of water as a conflict ground between contradictory symbolic, imaginary and real orders. Relations between the tyranny of the maritime territory served by technological improvements and the origin of tectonics flow as a place for creation of natural boundaries. Artist invents the concept of geology of morality as an idea manifested by the occurrence of the island and its mnemonic power, surrounded by recovered memories of life without incapacitation. Formal deconstruction of the cartographical representation of maritime territories as an area determinated by the relation of dependencies. Here, the horizontal loop geometry is turned into the delaminated, folded topographical system floating somewhere in the ocean of lost but recoverable capacities. The work is questioning the origin of structures of power and taking the approach to decolonize ourselves from re-invented machinic enslavement caused by multilayered bio-geo-politics.

A new study published in the Journal of Imaginary Geology has revealed that the existence of horsts, or elevated landmasses, may have a hypnotizing effect on the mythical creature known as the unicorn.
According to the research, conducted by a team of geologists and fantasy experts, horsts have a unique composition of minerals and crystals that emit a subtle, yet powerful, frequency that impacts the behavior of unicorns.
The study's lead researcher, Dr. Lily Rosewood, explained, "We have long been fascinated by the connection between geology and folklore. It's no surprise that horsts, with their striking geological features, have captured the imaginations of people for centuries. But what we discovered was that these landforms have a literal hypnotic effect on unicorns."
The team conducted experiments with both real and imaginary unicorns, exposing them to different horsts of varying sizes and elevations. They found that the unicorns showed signs of increased relaxation and suggestibility when in the presence of horsts.
"It's as if the unicorns are under a trance-like state when near horsts, almost as if they are in a dream," said Dr. Rosewood. "This could explain why they are often depicted as being so serene and graceful."
Furthermore, the study also suggests that unicorns may have a natural affinity for horsts, which could explain why they are often found living in areas with these formations.
"Unicorns have always been associated with magic and enchantment. The presence of horsts could amplify these qualities and make it easier for unicorns to tap into their mystical abilities," added Dr. Rosewood.
The findings of this study could have significant implications for both the field of geology and the understanding of mythical creatures. The team hopes to continue their research, exploring the specific minerals and elements that contribute to the hypnotic effect of horsts on unicorns.
In the meantime, people around the world can continue to enjoy the hypnotic beauty and mysterious allure of these ancient landforms, knowing that they may hold a special power over the majestic unicorns of our imagination.

Dinis Santos, Um País Imaginário
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dinis Santos , Um País Imaginário, Pierrot le Fou.
Um País Imaginário [An Imaginary Country] focuses on contemporary vernacular architecture, bridging a gap between tradition and a fresh narrative. Starting with an uncommitted approach, the series evolved to align with established Portuguese photographic traditions. Covering the years 2017 to 2023, Santos pays homage to historical surveys, from the 1881 Scientific Expedition to Serra da Estrela to Álvaro Domingues‘ modern documentation of transgenic landscapes. Departing from a strict scientific perspective, Santos opts for an enchanting exploration of the imaginary present within the Portuguese territory.
The project delves into the symbolic concept of «home,» reflecting on Portuguese identity, local connections, and the socio-cultural impacts of emigration and economic shifts. The book features photographs primarily taken during Santos‘ journeys to villages marked by high emigration rates in Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, and Viseu. In Um País Imaginário, Santos captures landscapes, unveils technological contradictions, and interprets territory as a dynamic human «geology,» exploring the photogenic dimensions of products from the extractive economy, while providing a comprehensive view of Portugal’s changing cultural and economic landscape.

I am well aware that this doctrine of natural selection, exemplified in the above imaginary instances, is open to the same objections which were at first urged against Sir Charles Lyell's noble views on 'the modern changes of the earth, as illustrative of geology;' but we now very seldom hear the action, for instance, of the coast-waves, called a trifling and insignificant cause, when applied to the excavation of gigantic valleys or to the formation of the longest lines of inland cliffs.
"On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" - Charles Darwin

MUNDUS (the Latin word for World) is a journey through spaces and materials, signs of life and personal items investigating the relationship between the subterranean world and the Cosmos.
Photos, taken between 2010-2019 during the construction of underground infrastructure in the city of Thessaloniki reveal an invisible world that is in constant flux, shaped through explosions and demolitions, metamorphoses and transformations, thrusts and reconstructions. Connotations are evoked primarily from visual references to outer space, space missions and astronomical drawings, as well as through the alternating scale and angle of view of the pictures.
MUNDUS brings out the beauty of exploration and the mystery of creation combining art with science, the imaginary with the real and the earthy with the aerial, through a visual process that borrows from geology, engineering, astronomy, mathematics and art.
