thinking abt bellum v hard. (fyi there are 1658 words under this cut)

there's not a lot of concrete stuff to think abt but there ideas. he's kind of already won by the time link shows up on the scene. he's not really actively antagonizing the world of the ocean king, he mostly just has the ghost ship to go around collecting prey for him while he has the yook and anouki turned against each other and seems to have infested the different temples and whatever with monsters to delay any opposition. is he the one who destroyed the cobble kingdom? they're meant to be supporters of the ocean king so i think we can guess that bellum is the one who tried to eradicate them.

maybe he was the one who... mind controlled? or otherwise meddled with the yook to keep them from checking out the ice temple and keeping the anouki occupied with dealing with them. (tbh theres some untapped potential in the relationship between the yook and anouki) he doesn't really do anything to the gorons but maybe he doesn't see them as a worthwhile threat since they see the crimsonine as more of an artifact and not something they should really do anything with, and link has to pass a test to even be allowed to go to the temple. the cobble kingdom is already destroyed, and it can be assumed that he mightve mimicked their engineering based on eox being the hostile boss of the last temple and turning into sand, suggesting a relationship to bellum, and maybe that he's trying to hide the fact that he's the one fucking with everyone. i'm not even sure if characters (besides the main group) even know that bellum exists until link's quest is more known.

taking a note from the manga, where bellum says something along the lines of feelings of love and friendship creating more worthwhile life force for him, so taking that into account with stuff in the game suggests that he maybe doesnt make his presence well-known to avoid something like a mass panic or a persistent fear in people, which could downplay positive emotions that makes their life forces more worth taking to him along with other worthwhile forces maybe being ones connected to divine power (like his taking of tetra and seeming desperation to keep her specifically, since she's most likely a descendant of hylia's mortal form), so he likely is very hands-off with how he's affected the world in order to preserve the value of his prey, somehow. idk why he turns people into statues maybe its a preservation method. maybe hes saving tetra for some reason or maybe trying to bait link in as well. maybe he wants to grab link, too, but failed to catch him the first time and resorted to allowing him to go down the path of dismantling bellum's work all so that bellum can try and capture him himself.

the spirits he does manage to capture and left alive and instead just sealed away within their temples, which i believe is because spirits and gods and whatever in loz can't really die unless they explicitly permanently become mortal (hylia) and can only really be sealed away temporarily in some form, mostly due to a lot of them being a sort of representation of some part of the world (i like to imagine that demise is the god or whatever who created monsters, he's the father of monsters and opposes hylia due to the way her favored creatures [hylians ig] attack and kill monsters and he wants the world to be habitable and safe only for his creations)

it's probably safe to say that the ghost ship (like. the whole thing) was created by bellum, and in some form is perhaps some kind of living being, hence why bellum is capable of effectively possessing it the way he does, since it's an extension of himself like the boss monsters, it just maybe takes parts from some existing ships, or maybe it's not alive and bellum is capable of creating large structures like that he is compatible with.

bellum himself turns to sand when he is defeated, as well as most of the other boss monsters, but the cubus sisters (who certainly have a relationship with bellum due to having the same eyes and being connected to the ghost ship) do not turn into sand, which makes me think that bellum didn't actually create them; maybe they're corpses or something being remotely puppeted by bellum.

bellum is clearly made up of the sand of hours, a crystallization of life force, and oshus is said to have used those sands to create the phantom hourglass, and the sands are also mentioned to have been created from the force gems connected back to oshus himself, so bellum was probably created from those force gems and therefore those sands of hours at some point somehow (i enjoy the idea that oshus was the one who created bellum; with oshus being our main source of info on bellum, i think it'd be interesting if he was the one who originally made bellum but obscures this fact by just talking about how he 'appeared' and whatnot).

bellum seems to have a weird sort of... inverted? perverted? ability to create life (perhaps a sort of parallel to the one we can assume the ocean king has if we assume that he created the three spirits as well as bellum maybe) but only in a hivemind or derivative sort of way, only able to create things that follow simple commands and when he possesses something else he takes it over. (i like to take him in a more biological or physiological way rather than magical, when he is removed so is the control, but there might be little remnants, but his influence is gone. i take bellumbeck aftereffects to be terrible sickness rather than others going with the idea of taking on some bellum-like traits or residual controls. the things bellum creates can only follow simple rules unless he is directly in control therefore he can use it as he wishes, but if he takes control of something he did not create, it's a bit more of a battle, he has to contend with that other being's subconscious or whatnot and has no effect unless he is physically connected. his control is more limited and ends up incorporating some of the hosts' subconscious desires with some guiding from bellum himself to achieve a favorable outcome.)

with the world of the ocean king being a sort of parallel/separate world to link n tetra's great sea, it's interesting that the ghost ship can be physically present outside the world in which it was created. definitely there can be contact between different worlds in loz (like hyrule and the dark world/lorule in alttp/albw and a little bit with termina if you take that as a literal place and a little bit with koholint and then the twili realm and whatever i'm missing) but it's interesting to see bellum as a villain capable of (in some way) contact and interact within other worlds and drag inhabitants of those other worlds into his own (oshus can send people out of his world, so i assume he can also bring them in, maybe that's how link gets in despite falling off of the ghost ship, unless somehow the ghost ship is still within the world of the ocean king but is also present in the great sea but the area around it is a fragment of whatever part of the world of the ocean king its in superimposed over the great sea... idk) so it's interesting that bellum could bc considered a villain able to tamper with or at least interact with world boundaries to let things in and out, maybe it's something that he is only capable of with whatever power he's attained by the start of the game.

whatever relationship he may have to oshus and the other spirits is not at all a part of the game, but at the same time we don't learn a whole lot about them anyways. there's also stuff with the chief of the golden frogs as another ally of oshus, but i imagine bellum didn't bother with him because he has no relation to the spirits' locations and the pure metals, and zuaz was left alone perhaps because his location is secret, while astrid and kayo were maybe found due to living on a more populated island (more prey for bellum to go after, more people to know about astrid and kayo). a lot of the monsters in the dungeons were probably already there, while the bosses were specifically made to protect what was hidden there, or maybe the bosses came first and their presences attracted other monsters.

i think bellum created the two monsters you fight overseas on the spot; they existed specifically to try and kill link because at those two times (link going to get the final spirit and link going to get the first pure metal) bellum suddenly panics and decides to try and eliminate link at the cost of the loss of a possible worthwhile piece of prey. bellum was probably also the one to begin the rumor of the ghost ship; i imagine he can take a sort of human form the same way oshus can, and spent a bit of time after defeating oshus and creating the ghost ship integrating him within some pirate crew and using them to grow and spread the rumor of the ghost ship, eventaully leading them towards it and taking them has his first victims (and along the way taking the time to foster good relationships with them in the hopes that their positive emotions and feelings would make them more worthwhile prey, back to the manga snippet idea of feelings of friendship and love [and probably positive emotions in general] being another form of better life force).

bellum's cool

some quick thoughts on nerdy prudes must die

first off - this is 100% a return to form for starkid for me. tgwdlm was like. lighting in a bottle but i really, really am not a fan of black friday - so i dipped after that, and never really looked into nightmare time etc. as i'm not super into the hatchetfield eldritch lore stuff - honestly, i figured i was aging out of it. THAT SAID. holy shit. npmd is brilliant

every single goddamn song is a banger. every one. it's so rare for me to like everything at least to a little bit, but when i can interchange my entire top 5 you know it's brilliant. high school is killing me, nerdy prudes must die, dirty girl, hatchet town...all top tier starkid in general. up there w tgwdlm

angela giarratana and will branner steal this entire show. absolutely insane stuff from both of them. will in particular...oh man. it's his show and you just KNOW it

jon's vocals and just. general range in this is amazing to see from tgwdlm

i will say i wish this maintained the more straight slasher vibe of the first act all the way through but that’s just personal preference since i'm less into the overarching eldritch lore stuff as mentioned. with that in mind though, i didn't find the lords in black stuff as jarring as i thought i would (and the summoning's a banger) - so it works narratively. i think at the end of the day i prefer my standalone shows - not everything needs to be an extended universe - so i was pleasantly surprised at how relatively well this could function as its own thing.

following that - i think this is the closest starkid's gotten to like, off-broadway quality - with plot modifications i could 100% see it making the jump. the production quality - of both the musical itself and the proshot, is amazing - everything pops, it's incredibly polished and just looks brilliant (again, such a step up from BF.)

shoutout to the costume design in particular. top tier work again. ghost max looked crazy good.

for something that in actuality didn't get a lot of focus...can’t stop thinking about how the whole max jagerman grace chastity dynamic is like the absolute HARDEST thing to randomly come out of starkid. the implicit themes had absolutely no right to go that hard!!!! it’s a silly horror comedy!

devout repressed christian and a boy that thinks he’s god. and then she deals with the first sign of sexual attraction to him by killing him??

and then his ghost comes back for vengeance, viewing it as divine justice - and then she ends the musical enacting her own vengeful divine justice?? straight up with modified reprise of his song?? they’re one and the same?? the prayer motif???

“will you pray for me / when i’m gone / or is this the eternal dark without a dawn” and “who will pray for you / when your body’s gone” is like the rawest motif of all time and it’s in the same musical that has an ten minute long barbecue joke sequence unrelated to the plot

nothing sexier than the motif of killing god and god killing you, in general. i do think i loved this one because it played with a lot of my fave tropes and themes of horror - high school slasher, archetypes, coming back wrong, religion, all that

"the big game" kept cracking me up it's so dumb and yet

anyway this whole thing just felt like we've unlocked...i dunno, a new level of starkid?? i was blown away and i'm sure for those more invested in hatchetfield beyond tgwdlm it hit even more, but it's left me so excited to see what's next from them for the first time in years.

[trying to break the work bloger habbit]

anyway. the new turtle game (splintered fate) which is only on apple arcade (a travesty cause 1. i dont have apple product and 2. all turtles games should have physical releases cause oh boy the licensing) is kinda god tier. im not biased no trust me.

nah i just mean fits perfectly into these 2 turtles fans lives cause bro is playing and i can watch via screensharing stuff (good for my hands which i damage with gaming just. way too frequently and thats not a joke). any its like one of rogue-likes with the rng upgrades things. so even tho im not playing still fun to shoot the shit and debate you know crit hit increase vs elemental damage upgrade. whatever. this too is a vector for play.

and its got like a really fun mix of iteration traits? like i guess its idw comics based but it has vibes from a few of the shows too. very funny to unpick whats happening in that regard (one of the villains is THE MAYOR. very funny). and well its nice when theres a video game with all the various chatter and banter that IS ABOUT THE THING u like and think about all the time. wish everyone could have this experience honestly lol.

suprisingly will even hit on emotional themes and motifs too. lose to a boss get a pep talk from ur dad... hell yeah. the vas are doing good to great work (splinter is paul nakauchi who rules and is. notably. japenese american. also fucking sonic VA is raph)

not really a point to this post other that to say a thing that beens happening that i actually enjoy. hope one day they release it on a real platform,,, for a flat price not a subscription. without the phone quality crunching it would look really good... also maybe better ui. why do phone game menus look like that...

also ofc its a turtles game one of the damage types is ooze... thats just fun to say. ooze based build.

GOOD QUASTION ok first of all a reboot would be better than a sequel so thanks for that outline :)

i still insist that the metaphor is more about disability than about sexuality so i want to see some of that shown just to bring it to light. like idk maybe have a kid with a cane be in hero class but they only let him do Save the Citizen and Class Sorting without using his cane to "prove something"

THE SOUNDTRACK. redone. rating spirit halloween’s new animatronics for 2021

or at least what’s showing as New Arrivals on the site for me. looks like we got 15 new arrivals listed here and im HYPE about them so here we go

the caretaker

pretty standard reaper character with a Gravedigger theme to it. hes... fine? nothing about this particularly stands out to me, but i dont dislike it at all. i like his gravestone. would be good for a graveyard set. i guess ill give him... 6.5/10

mr. dark

at first glance he also just looks like a standard reaper character (or voldemort. he definitely looks like voldemort now that i think about it) but it turns out he SPRINGS UP RIDICULOUSLY TALL LIKE A CURSED WACKY INFLATABLE TUBE MAN and the spring motion in the video is actually really fucking fast so, while this isn’t a lot different from other jumpscare animatronics, i gotta give him credit bc i guarantee this would have scared the fuck outta me in person. according to the site he’s almost 9 feet tall at his full height

i expected him to jump out and scream but i did not expect. That. i feel like if you put him up on a stage or something to make him loom over people even more he’d be very menacing indeed. would also be really good if you put him behind something so you don’t see him until he's suddenly There

pretty much just a zombie but he’s cute i like him. i like the green eyes. i dont know what it is about him in motion but the video makes him kind of endearing to me for some reason and i dont know why. 6/10

ophelia

at first for some reason i thought the monster’s name was ophelia but i think that’s supposed to be the name of the victim? i think the idea here is “girl haunted by a Nightmare” but the fact that the monster itself is so small and doesn’t actually have a body for the most part makes this unintentionally hilarious to me

like. it. it’s so small. it’s just a little shoulder demon. it’s so cute

psst. hey do we have any more cheetos

anyway i like how the girl’s eyes move back and forth but the sounds she makes are uncomfortable and she just looks so. stiff and solid and there doesn’t seem to be any movement at all other than her eyes and the monster peeking out so it’s just kind of weird to look at. it’s an interesting concept but the execution is just strange and unintentionally hilarious. 7/10 bc i still think its really funny

someone should buy this and mod it into chrona and ragnarok

WE DID IT KIDS WE FINALLY GOT A FEMALE CLOWN ANIMATRONIC im so happy i could cry i wish my store had her set up i want to meet her

i love how they have her hanging upside down like this, it makes it so much more visually interesting than the figures that just kinda stand there looking spooky, even though she doesn’t really Do much (she just swings and her head moves around a little, just laughs, doesn’t have spoken lines)

i love her outfit i love her hair shes SO cute i love this little murder gremlin i love her i love her

im still waiting on spirit to give us a female clown figure that isn’t “creepy little girl” (ive commented before on how their only female figures tend to be either the Old Hag or the Creepy Little Girl and not a lot else) but i absolutely love this all the same 20/10

according to the description he’s actually harriet’s dad!! we have an evil clown father and daughter duo here and im LIVING for it

i dont think ive ever seen spirit do characters that are related to each other like this that’s so cute,

apparently his wife/harriet’s mother left them and ran off with the ringmaster. he’s a single father clown trying to raise his evil daughter clown and i support him wholeheartedly

there doesn’t seem to be any more animatronics on this storyline, we don’t have the mother here and the only ringmaster animatronic they have is the rotten ringmaster who was released previously, but i doubt he’s the homewrecker ringmaster in question. he Could Be. imagine if your wife left you for That. we dont even know if henry’s wife was also a clown or not. spirit halloween clown lore going on here

anyway i absolutely LOVE this clown, he does something INCREDIBLY STARTLING AND UNEXPECTED which i dont want to spoil for you. go watch his video and see what he does its great

my absolute favorite type of halloween animatronic is the “does something completely unexpected” category and this one is ALSO a clown and a GOOD clown at that

and he’s got this great vintage clown style i really like, i love scary clowns like this that actually look like they could believably be a real guy and not just some kind of mutant Clown Monster

and hes got cards!! card suit motif!!! i love it i love him this is a great clown 20/10 for him too

we have this one at my local store and listen to me. im completely obsessed with this ghost

it’s pretty much just a ghost but it’s SUCH A GOOD ghost. especially in this photo here with proper spooky lighting and everything. i would absolutely LOVE to see this in a haunt attraction, it looks SO good even in bright store lighting. i feel like this under the right lights and in the right environment could look SO fuckign cool

the shredded rag look!!! the ethereal glow!! the weird jellyfishy movement!!! the classic wooOoO oO o o ooo noises!! this may perhaps be the ideal ghost. it is without flaw. a perfect specimen. i fuckign LOVE this ghost i want it so badly but i do not have the space or the money for this thing 15/10 w. raith my beloved. my true love. maybe one day

buzzsaw

at first i was slightly disappointed to see that this guy didn’t have an actual name, but then in the description apparently his name is Bill “Buzzsaw” Jackson and his backstory is he tried to be a wrestler but it didnt go very well so he grafted weapons in place of his hands. i guess. you know, to be better at wrestling. i dont really understand it and i definitely would not have gone with “disgraced former wrestler” as the concept for this guy

but anyway we have mr jackson at my store right now, he’s Big, i like him. he doesn’t really move very fast and doesn’t jump at you, he just kinda swings his saw around. for some reason he just seems friendly to me and i dont know why. makes me think of like an uncle dressed up for halloween rather than an actual murderer guy. i dont know i cant explain it but i like him hes my friend 8/10

wacky mole

this guy’s also at my store this year, i didn’t know his name was wacky mole fsdgjsdg

he’s listed as a new arrival, but i thought i remembered seeing him before, and the description says he’s a returning fan favorite, so. i guess this is a re-release

anyway pretty standard Scary Monster Clown. his teeth look like candy corn. i like it but i think they should just Be candy corn. i like his colorscheme and his silly giant buttons. light up eyes are always a nice touch. he doesnt really stand out but hes overall a pretty good clown. 7/10

grim

good ol’ classic skeleton. he’s pretty nicely modeled though and i highly recommend watching the video for this guy because he moves REALLY well for a spirit animatronic, he’s got a way wider range of movement than most of them do and his head moves really nicely. one of the benefits of a skeleton animatronic is you don’t have to deal with lip movement, so his jaw movements match with his lines a lot more realistically. i like the animated glowing eyes too, it really gives him a lot of personality. he’s really interesting to watch. like, it’s just a skeleton, but it’s a really really good skeleton, so, 8/10

BEETLEJUICE!!

i love love love franchise character animatronics and spirit has so much great beetlejuice stuff this seems well suited to them but looking at it............. hm. hm

he just looks so. stiff and his face comes across like, deer caught in the headlights to me. it Does Not look very natural but it looks slightly better in motion (he just swivels from side to side and says a few phrases but it somehow looks less. shellshocked when he’s moving)

maybe not the greatest execution but maybe he looks better in person and im still hype to see him so 8/10 regardless

night stalker

we have this guy at my store too, im still not really sure what’s going on with his arms (did he just rip loose from them and leave them behind? did someone do this to him? i dont know) but i love a good spooky scarecrow. love his Wiggles. hes a pretty good boy. 6.5/10

here we have another pennywise, it pretty much just pops out at you, but it’s still pretty good. i like the full size one they had before better, but this one’s slightly cheaper and would be easier to integrate into a haunted house attraction since he comes with a built in set piece. it looks good but doesn’t do much. 7.5/10 i guess

anyway hes got kind of the same issue beetlejuice has where the figure just. looks kind of stiff, and he looks more like a spooky ghost decoration than like, A Person. he doesnt seem to have any lines or anything either, he just kinda pops out. but then again i guess whenever we see ghostface in person in the movies he doesn’t usually talk anyway. i dont really know how id make this better but it seems a little underwhelming somehow. still hype to see it though. 7/10 i guess

now if we could just get a jack torrance and a bela lugosi dracula id be content

i would LOVE to see Red from Us but i doubt they’d do one. my other horror beloved is norman bates but i know if they made one of him it’d just be him in a dress waving a knife around (not that i wouldn’t still be hype to see him, but, y’know) (anyway. tangent. moving on)

mr. howle

it’s. a werewolf. he howls. that’s....... about it

it’s a very nice looking werewolf, it’s a well designed figure and definitely looks very imposing, but it’s... just a werewolf. there’s not really anything particularly interesting or creative here. its a perfectly good werewolf. i dont have anything to say about this. 6.5/10

i also just am not a werewolf person so maybe someone out there who has a greater appreciation for werewolves might like him more

I went into this with low expectations. it sounded like it was trying to bank on hotel del luna, but i was still down to watch a ghost version of leverage or whatever this turned out to be. figured it’d be decent to watch but not AMAZING.

the first ep gave me that impression. by the second ep i was hooked. and by the third ep this was one of my favorite shows of all time

PREMISE

during the joseon era, a shaman named weol ju went and fucked up a perfectly good sacred tree. as punishment, she now has to resolve the grudges of 100,000 humans or go to hell. as a shaman, she can accomplish this by plying them with alcohol and entering their dreams (well the alcohol part might just be her artistic signature).

time to start a bar!

in the current day, 500 years later, weol ju owns and runs mystic pop up bar, where she learns about her customers’ grudges. and apparently has sound business strategy, as she serves like 4 people a day but still has enough overhead to craft these 4 people bespoke meals that speak to their inner tragedy. and also sandwiches.

helping her is chief gwi, a ghost cop who’s been reassigned to her bar to help weol ju accomplish her quota. because time’s running out--weol ju now has less than a month to solve her 10 remaining grudges.

enter bambi kang bae. a regular human who works a regular customer service job, kang bae has one terrible power: anytime someone touches him (or he touches them), they want to confess their deepest, darkest secrets. kang bae is understandably not comfortable around people (but desperately wants to be around people. my poor fucking heart) and incredibly lonely.

when his and weol ju’s paths cross, she makes him an offer: he helps her out with her remaining grudges, and in return she’ll remove his powers.

MAIN CHARACTERS

weol ju

a 500+ year old shaman who is paying for her sins on earth because she went out on a limb :| . begins the series angry and ends the series angry, because it turns out angry people can still be kind, which is great to see with a female protagonist. how close she’s cutting it to the deadline on her quota speaks strongly to sixth-year senior vibes. wears modern versions of hanboks which are all v. cool and on moments of aching realization wednesdays she wears pink.

will steal your shit and look you straight in the eyes as she walks backwards into hell.

gwi/gui

a former ghost cop who’s been reassigned to help weol ju run the mystic pop up bar. he’s a lot more chill than weol ju and has the vibe of someone who forgets keys at home. while at the bar, he does a lot of the prep work, and is sometimes asked by yeom to help catch nearby, evil spirits.

he’s actually like a hardcore warrior, but you forget it because he wears goggles to cut onions and dresses like someone who would be the spokesperson for microwaveable fish sticks. team dad. fanboy of romantic serial e-novels.

han kang bae

a baby.

in a truly amazing narrative move, kang bae works customer service at a market by day and solves grudges at a bar by night. is a sweet, simple boy who just wants to help people and is SO EXCITED to have new friends in weol ju and gwi. you want to give him a hug BUT YOU CAN’T. human carebear

even the yellow collar of his customer service uniform makes a heart:

lmao you know it’s going to be good when a character is introduced dropping a dude straight to the ground. yeo rin is a bodyguard mild spoiler turned security guard for the market where kang bae works. she could beat the shit out of you and you’d thank her. has no luck in dating. rocks a suit. sobs at movies about gout

yeom, the grim reaper

your friendly neighborhood grim reaper. yeom very much screams middle management, and works in the same “district” that weol ju and gwi have their pop up bar in. sometimes they’re at odds with one another (because weol ju has about the same amount of respect for the rules that an untrained puppy has for new carpet), but they’re still friends. gwi sometimes works with him to catch evil spirits, buddy-cop style. loves noodles.

yeomra-daewang

god of the underworld. in charge of handing out punishments and determining the fates of those sent to the afterlife. forgets who she’s texting. appreciates true love but is also aggressively annoyed by it. take your fucking scroll and go

samsin

probably the character with the most name recognition. samsin (or samsin granny) is the goddess of mothers and children, and in the show the focus is more on children. loves karaoke, basic bitch coffee, and claw games. gives out too many sexy tiger dreams.

kim wong hyun

he gave them the heebie jeebies. he had nothing else to give

ringtones.

they’re their own character. check out those motifs.

Drawbacks

if i had any, it’s that the first episode undersells the rest of the series. and even the first ep isn’t bad

12 episodes is not enough :(

Reasons to Watch.

i love the little details: that the supernatural characters have ring tones that correspond to their role (ex: the god of the underworld’s are screams; i believe the grim reaper’s are a shaman’s bells?, gwi has SPOILERS), or that the food special of the day connects or reflects with the person they’re helping. themes/significant moments are represented by the colors characters are wearing. im a nerd for this stuff

there are some dramatic reveals about who characters are and how they relate to one another, but like. dynamics barely (or don’t at all) change, and that’s due to how strong/familial they are already? and the show’s built up to it and it all feels really earned A+

i HATE monster of the week formats, but the ones in this show are integrated with the main characters’ backstories and also propel the major arcs forward. and it’s wholesome when the grudges are solved

i like that you think you saw a full scene in the flashbacks, but then a few eps later the flashback gets extended. idk it’s a cool narrative device

the romance is wonderful all-around

the pacing was great. i wish one of the Reveals was introduced earlier just so we could have more moments with it, but everything was cohesive/wrapped up nicely

all the characters have their own unique relationships to one another. kang bae + weol ju have their own dynamic, weol ju +gwi, gwi + kang bae, and so on. it was nice to see that none of the main trio were satellite characters

While I’m at it here’s my take on Donald as the Duck Avenger as set in Ducktales’17. It kinda became a rambling essay by accident so it’s under a readmore lol

So like I’ve seen posts about how Donald became the Duck Avenger and was superhero-ing in the past and then eventually retired to raise the boys. And that is very very good, and in line so far with the character of Donald Duck and the world of ducktales’17…

But I like the idea of a Donald that hasn’t become the Duck Avenger yet even more.

So far, Donald hasn’t had a whole lot of character development other than backstory and has had more of a passive role in influencing the plot (moonvasion) and even other characters. While this was necessary given the importance of what the crew wanted to do with this franchise (coughcoughdelladuckcough), there are plenty of interesting ways to reintroduce him in season three that can actively drive the major and minor plots forward in a way that is authentic to the writing of the show and interesting to viewers unfamiliar with the more niche sides of Donald Duck.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Dad Donald and definitely want to see more of him and Della reconnecting, and clashing, over how to raise the boys.

But now that Della IS back, Donald is, from the narrative’s perspective, allowed to take a backseat and go his own path, one that isn’t centered on his responsibility as the triplet’s only parent. Donald can explore, have adventures, and make friends, as seen with Daisy and Goofy’s official inclusion in season three. But this isn’t about any of that stuff; this is about the DUCK AVENGER.

So here’s my evidence:

In the season one finale, when Gyro gave Donald the voice modulator, it can be reasonably assumed by the audience through the rest of the scene (making the rescue plan) and later scenes (with Beakley) that 1. Donald and Gyro aren’t friendly as friendly as this Gyro allows anyone to be with him, that is so that leaves room for future character interaction (which will be important for DA gadgets and stuff) and 2. this is the first time that Donald, and the others, hear and understand him without his speech impediment (Donald uses a voice modulator as DA to protect his secret identity) (also this)

In the season two finale, Donald’s anger issues are addressed and given context with how he has felt misunderstood, picked on, even powerless; but the turning point for him is channeling that anger into protective instincts for his family. So far in ducktales’17, the desire to help out of pure selflessness is a shared characteristic of Duckburg heroes. BUT ALSO, in the finale, after the day is saved, he finds out that all his hard work, fighting for his life on the moon and then his struggle for survival on that deserted island, was all for naught. And he is, understandably, upset and pissed. (Probably feeling something similar to what drove him to be the prankster known as the Duck Avenger in the first place, before he used those skills for crimefighting.)

(and well, now that Della’s back, the family doesn’t really need Donald Duck anymore, do they? they didn’t even know he was gone)

Not all character development is positive, after all.

So now Donald’s got the backstory and the tools, but he still doesn’t have the proper motivation yet. What’s stopping him from just hanging out with Daisy and Goofy all the time instead?

Enter season three, aka the season of superheros, to provide Donald with inspiration. But also, this season will (most likely) focus on Huey, and out of all the triplets he is the one that’s closest to his Uncle Donald (as show throughout seasons one and two). At this point Huey and Donald share one major thing in common: by the current narrative’s perspective, they are both severely undeveloped in the show when compared to other major characters. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! So if we bank on all that, then we have a conspiracy that is unraveling a major threat to the world, an Uncle drifting away from his family, and several new but key players entering the game.

This is what drives Huey’s character development, and if we believe that Donald’s influence (or lack thereof) will play a key role in that development like Scrooge did for Dewey or Della for Louie, then to have Donald be a superhero would be the cherry on top of the metaphorical sundae that is the writing teams’ love for interlocking themes and motifs. Someone for Huey to look up to and/or despise while feeling the opposite way towards his uncle.

Or maybe Huey’s love for superheros helps convince Donald to take up the mask in an attempt to remain relevant to his family. idk im just rambling now lol

ALSO this show loves things that come in pairs of three and so far we only have two superheroes…

In conclusion Donald Duck can, should, will, and must become the Duck Avenger in season three and im angsty about it

What is an aspect of your muse that you’ve wanted to explore the most? i like the concept of comparing julie’s self confidence versus her… lack of it? she’s sort of been working on it a little already, but she doesn’t really value her opinion over other peoples’, especially regarding her like… self worth. but at the same time she loves to joke about how good and skilled and kind and talented and just overall great she is… hmm.. i just think it’s neat ! also julie x touch, and julie in general just being a badass with powers

and i just really in general want to explore… um… julie, and, sharing things about herself. she doesn’t think she’s important enough to other people to share her opinions (because they dont matter!) but i posit that because characters care about her they want to know these things. but she doesn’t believe me

Name one idea for a plot you’ve had but never got around to writing. jeez i like never hide my ideas from anyone, i always just spit them out into the open ??? more recently i made a verse where julie learned about her water powers a lot earlier and went to the xmen school as a kid and in the future is an environmental activist with an emphasis on the water… she is the julie of my dreams who travels to tsunami and hurricane and flood prone areas (and fires, and droughts, and melting glaciers) to try and reduce human casualty… and weighing with the guilt of not being able to help everyone, and the anger of watching governments be like “why do we need to do anything when you’re here lol” and capitalists be like “lmao lets make water a sellable commodity”, and the stress of constantly overloading herself with marcus’ help. hmm. i like it

Are there any songs that remind you of your muse and/or get you in the mood to reply? not really ! i like solo piano stuff sometimes. hearing soundscapes can get me in the mood sometimes; i am particularly fond of running water and train tracks. if i listen to nanananananana by uhh, fallout boy ?? i think ?? then i immediately think of maes hughes. but that’s about it

How has your muse changed since you first began writing them? 2012 julie was very edgy. i do not like her. she was also very ready to fight people all the time. nowadays her primary emotion is unsure, and, she is much tamer, and i think her sense of humor is less abrasive though it still has a little bit of teeth…

Take the opportunity to write a short ramble/drabble about something you want to write about. one of the biggest draws to me about writing poe is just the idea of interacting with rey and finn? and i think a lot of people see that too which is why i see it in a lot of fanfictions; rey and finn are missing a lot of experiences and context in terms of how… the resistance and generally people who aren’t assholes work?

rey has grown up in a world where she scrounges for scrap only for the asshole at the counter to decide how much it’s worth (how much her life is worth) in terms of garbage food and finn from the get-go has been just another cog in the wheel, a disposable unit, no thoughts allowed, no opinions allowed unless they are the order’s… no fucking names

and poe like… i just like… poe who like… immediately is kind to these people… he gives finn a name, and they’ve known each other for like 30 minutes,,, and (in my heart) he reaches over not to take but to drop more food on rey’s plate,,, and he just…. trusts openly, like, these two people who… have not had a lot of trust placed upon them in the past, and while they dont have to trust him back, he would, you know, like them to???? i just like poe’s kindness. and. i like that he is kind in relation to these two people who have probably been starved for kindness in the past… and just… also, i love him??????

TOY STORY 4

sorry ive been away for a while but now im back and boy do i have some movie thoughts for you. the first film i want to talk about is toy story 4 and i gotta say it was really good. toy story is one of the only franchises to be able to pull off making that many films in a row and having them all be good. skip to the end for TLDRs you know the deal and, lets go

lets start with the sound. it didnt add much that i can remember to the film and it could feel a tad overbearing at times which i dont love. next is acting. now im not really one for judging voice acting so im not saying this is good or bad its just next because i didnt know how to qualify it. now were getting to the good stuff, editing. the pace on this movie was right on the mark. it really struck the balance between fast paced witty movie about toys and sentimental film about growing up and finding yourself. speaking of finding balances, the direction on this was great. it was all very cohesive and had a unique voice while still keeping in the spirit of the classic toy story trilogy. the animation on this was lovely as well. it was all so delicate and just so detailed and full of life. the cinematography really helps the animation shine as well and together they create the most visually stunning shots of the franchise. some of the shots felt like paintings or perfectly staged photographs and just the careful animation coupled with that masterful cinematography were easily the parts that left the biggest and most positive impressions on me. now for the script the script itself was very good. all of the lines were very in character nothing felt off or too forced it was quite organic especially because i dont think they anticipated making this film.still, it fit very nicely with the rest of the franchise. the story was nothing we hadn’t seen before but it felt appropriate and they still managed to make it feel quite fresh. but the themes and lessons were absolute stand outs. this is a film that didnt talk down to the audience. it didnt have explain moments and it wasn't soft for the children. it dealt with adult themes and universal truths that not only teach good lessons to the kids but also resonate with anyone watching this from ages 9-99. whoever you are you can find a piece of yourself in this film and connect with it. and just to mention this real quick before i wrap this up, can we talk about the reincorporation of motifs with this film? dang! everything came back with a powerful punch in the end and it was amazing. (few spoilers coming up just skip to the end if you havent watched it) remember when people were mad that this movie was breaking the great wrap up of the first shot of the first movie being the last shot of what was thought to be the last movie well this movie makes it even better! that reincorporation of shots in the original trilogy signified a new beginning and although yes there was character development along the way they were basically where they started- as toys ready to make a young kid really happy. and now the last shot of this one, where woody grows in such a monumental way and does whats right for him and not the kid and becomes a lost toy and he finds himself, the last shot of this movie is basically that same first shot but its night now signifying a massive change for woody and a new situation, waiting for a “new dawn” as a lost toy in what could be an amazing conclusion to the franchise or a fantastic beginning to a new trilogy.

all in all this movie is ideal for anyone who’s looking to have a night out with kids or just looking to see what their favorite childhood cartoon characters are doing now if not only for the stunning visuals (which make it worth the ticket all alone) then for the heartwarming story and nostalgia factor. definite 8/8 for a children's movie and a solid 8/10 as an overall film from me

like ocs that are boys and are monsters of some kind (not like strictly monster monsters, more like mythical creatures)

i... still haven’t quite decided on like if they’re human or not but

the clear theme is “these boys aint human” and they all have like,, a certain aesthetic that sorta points in the direction of their like “character”?

most of them have pointy ears but

aragon is a dragon, so he wears like,,, leather and stuff like that (and fishnets apparently)

solomon is a wood elf so he wears primarily linens and like white stuff

Rav is a spirit (i think he used to be a spirit of death or smth idk) but hes goth (obviously) but like high goth??? fancy goth???? whatever

Wei is a koi merman so he’s obviously gonna have skin tight, shiny clothes

and hal is a half siren (like the bird kind) so he’ll have like wing and feather motifs

it’s basically repurposing like 5 totally unrelated OCs into a boy band lmaoooo

This boy is interesting, but he’s definitely a little bit all over the place. I’m going to try to reign his themes in a bit to try to create a more cohesive character. Before I even get to his blood color or start reviewing him, I’m going to talk about the basic premise you have for him… It seems that he was a fuschia who later became a teal? But I have a more interesting idea for you.

Perhaps he could be a tealblood who really wants to be a fuschia. Who wishes for the throne despite this being a clearly foolish and doomed goal.

So I’m going to thin his theme down to Squids, for their camouflaging ability, ink for the idea of darkness and to harken back to the interest in painting you’ve given him, and Pluto, for his association with wealth, death, and blueish-green colors.

Place:posibly some unknown planet/place in space

Let’s put him on a colony planet! We’ve never been given much information about whether or not mother grubs have been transferred off planet to start populating other colonized lands. It would take you a little extra effort, because you’d have to write up your own ideas for what this planet is like, but it’s an interesting chance!

Maybe it’s a crappy backwater planet with lots of hostile life that’s mostly used as a waypoint and he’s being trained to handle some bureaucratic ship-docking job that he hates and so that’s why he decides he wants to be an heir. He knows he’s doomed to die here and he doesn’t want to do that. He wants to climb the corporate ladder, aggressively.

Name: Shinoi Tanzul(not sure) (Shin)means 4 and death in japanese,since his aspect is doom (oi)from aoi,means blue in japanese,also pronounced like oy,expression for feeling tired,surprice,etc (Tan)short for titannium,strong unlike him,atomic number 22 (Zul)from azul,blue on spanish

I think changing his name to Dibran Glauce might be a good idea!

Dibran is a reference to the Dibranchiata class of cephalopods, which are the kind that utilize ink in chromatophores to change coloration. Glauce is Pluto’s twin who died of mysterious causes at a young age.

Age:close to 7 alternian sweeps (14 earth years)

Strife Specibus:painting brush,(got an bi-dent on the other side)

I think it should be a paint brush that transforms into a bi-dent, much like Kanaya’s lipstick/chainsawkind. It’s a nice reference to his desire to be a fuschia without quite hitting the mark.

Fetch Modus:wallet modus,simple as looking for your stuff at your wallet but no,its all overlapped and messy

How about a squid modus instead. It’s like a tree modus, but with more camouflage. There’s a base item that is the “head” of the squid and then 10 arms where he can store additional items. Removing the head ejects everything. Also, he cannot tell what any of the items are. they’ve all blended into the white backgrounds of the cards. He’s got to play a guessing game.

Blood color:born as a fuchsia blood,then noticed he was really an teal troll,got his blood teal at the end and he looves it!!

Since there’s less logical reason for a transition between fuschia and teal, that’s why I decide to make this switch. Instead of necessarily having a biological switch out of nowhere between a midblood and a fuschia, having a midblood attempt to vie for the throne is a lot more fascinating as a concept.

Symbol:well,he got just an actual sign,pimini,sign of the adjuster,derse dreamer,doom aspect (he decided to paint his sign on the shirt and he sucks at it,but he still uses traditional sign for himself)

I actually do like this for him. The Adjuster fits well as a name for his desire. Maybe he self-selected this symbol after finding it online? But I think I’ll adjust it just a little bit to be a fusion of Pimini and Pluto’s symbol.

Partially as a reference to Pluto, partially as a reference to Limini (which would be his birth sign).

I do like the pairing thing… But I’d leave off the half o, because combined with everything else it becomes a little visually busy. The P_ might not be necessary either. Just capitalizing P probably works well enough! Maybe have him use ~~ sometimes as a reference to squid tentacles.

Special Abilities:he can see but can’t see,can see past,present and future,also can see other people point of view and sometimes on 3rd person,also got some mind powers but he sucks at being body strong

If we place him as a teal, that means he wouldn’t be given an actual abilities inherent to him. However, we know that seers do start to get some access to visions even prior to godhood, especially if they have a medium through which to view. If he’s a doom player, maybe he’s cursed… Cursed by some on-planet entity that allows him to witness oncoming danger, but also saps his strength and causes him to be easily agitated?

Personality: he is two or more minded,he is more often to the shy side but can get mad on two seconds by anything

Let’s give him a little more. Maybe he has a sort of air of mystery to the people around him. He’s shy and quiet, but he manages to play it off well, being perceived as more enigmatic than anything else. Since I have him placed as a teal, I want to give him some moral center… but I think it can be a really weak one considering his attempt to break the mold. So maybe his ethical center is just that no one deserves to die unknown in a job they didn’t ask for. And probably that he deserves to rule.

More importantly, he needs to have a lot of focus on fantasy… He has this rich inner world where he’s convinced he can achieve this goal despite shit being bad and it being foolish.

And you can keep him being emotional and reactive. Having a hairpin trigger is a really good character trait.

Interests:video games,equality,necromance and nonsences

This needs to be extrapolated a little more. Equalizing opportunity and obtaining wealth would probably be big goals of his. A desire to change the system. He could be interested in death/the dark, too, which could indicate how he becomes involved with a cursed entity… Give him a general interest in getting off planet and a general interest in politics too, maybe. I’m not sure what you meant by nonsences? Does he like those kinds of jokes that are just utterly incomprehensible? Because that’d be fun.

Title: seer of doom, can see the bad stuff coming

I do like this. He has a passive ability to know of the doom that is going to come and befall him. However, he has only partially realized his aspect. He must learn to Understand the doom that will befall him. He has to understand all the structures and ties and rules and systems that bind him. He must understand their inner mechanisms. He must understand all the ways in which he has created an unwinnable situation for himself. And then, through his inverse, Witch of Life, he has to attempt to actively influence the development of the world around him through this complex understanding… There’s a lot of growth potential for a character like him.

Land:land of Doom and stains??

Land of Idols and Stains, maybe. A land where he is worshipped as a false god, but it comes with dangerous, deadly consequences?

Design time!!:

Left: This is sort of his pre-trying to become a fuschia look.

Horns & hair: I kept the horns the same, but the hair I had to move up. I love characters with covered eyes, but there really was no themeatically appropriate reason to do so. It felt too much like falling back on blindness for a Suffering Aesthetic and I just don’t play with that. So the hairline moved up.

Eyes & mouth:: I still wanted to give him the cute look the low hair had given him, so I gave him round and happy eyes. I gave him tiny pupils, though, because smaller pupils tend to be just slightly freakier fsr. His mouth is still just that little smile.

Symbol: I put limini on his old shirt.

Socks & shoes: I made his socks teal and kept the splashes of paint on his shoes.

Right: Here’s when he starts trying to play fuschia.

Helmet: The tiara attachment is obviously edited from Feferi. I wanted to make sure the helmet would cover up where his fins would be Missing. Keeping this on would be good for making his image convincing.

Symbol: I combined Pimini and the Pluto sign I mentioned earlier. I still made it messily painted on. The added bonus of this is that it looks like he killed another fuschia.

Socks & shoes: I just changed the colors to fuschia variants.
