I need to shout about this... In the Miracle tiktok where Taehyun is dancing while SoobKai film with ILLIT... I don't know if he's eating or chewing gum but it looks like he's chewing gum and why is it so attractive to me. Now I've combined this with basketball Taehyun, thinking how hot it would be to watch him doing a solo practice, shooting and doing dribbling drills while casually making conversation with you, chewing gum the whole time. Am I crazy? Maybe, because before now, I'd probably say gum is gross.

WAIT but now I'm imagining this scenario is the first time you hang out after he sees you fraternising with the enemy (Yeonjun) and he's trying to act like it doesn't bother him that you gave him your number, only that you were clapping for the wrong team OKAY stop me and my imagination 😅 I love Taehyun

okay so, the first time you and taehyun hang out after the game is a couple of days later. he'd agreed to hang out with you at the park since you both had checked the weather in advance; it was sunnier than usual. you both decided to meet each other at your regular spot and you're not surprised to find taehyun already there, sitting on the grass and on his phone. usually he'd notice you when you walk up behind him, but it was almost like he'd purposely ignored you and waiting until you had to announce that you were there.

"tyun?" you sit beside him slowly leaning in to give him a usual hug when you greet each other but he gave you a lazy side hug. damn. "been waiting long?"

"no."

that's all you get? he pockets his phone, palms against the grass as he leans back chewing his gum nonchalantly and looking at the busy field in front of you. there seems to be a group of high schoolers training for soccer.

"um, are we good?" you ask quietly, heart pounding in your chest and a little afraid for the first time in forever.

he hums, eyes focused on the ball being passed from player to player.

"yeah, why wouldn't we?" his voice monotone but knowing taehyun, that was normal. "how's yeonjun. are you guys like text buddies now or something?"

now that wasn't what you were expecting. well shit. taehyun's mad and you don't know if that's all he has to say about it.

"no, tyun. he didn't even call me so I don't even have his number. I'm assuming he's busy is all. I wasn't really expecting much." you nudge his shoulder playfully, craning your neck in attempt to be in his visual field, but to no avail, his vision doesn't budge. you sit back in your original position, also watching the ball from afar. "does it bother you?"

you best friend scoffs, apparently he finds something humorous that you possibly missed.

"it doesn't. why'd you even talk to that guy anyway, you know he just does that to boost his ego because he lost the game." taehyun finally turns his head to look at you and you look at him within a fraction of a second, eyes holding eye contact for the first time that day.

"I'm sure he had good intentions-"

"good intentions." taehyun scoffs again, almost chuckles after he repeats it again. "that guy never has good intentions, ___. and I thought you were there to support me, then I catch you clapping for his three pointer."

your stomach churns a little from the guilt. you didn't know he saw that. and what do you even say? you thought it was impressive? you had a feeling yeonjun shot that shot for you?

"don't even try and think of some lame ass excuse because you know damn well I can tell when you're not telling me the truth." his voice assertive but his gaze on you softens, wanting you to be comfortable with him like you usually are.

you let out a deep sigh.

"he looked at me before that moment and I assumed he did that to impress me..." your voice trails off, trying to look at taehyun through your peripheral, not wanting to look at him directly. "I don't know tyun, he seemed pretty genuine and he's kinda cute too."

after explaining as honestly as you could, the air was filled with a short silence between the both of you and distant shouting and birds flying by.

"I can be kinda cute too." taehyun grumbles under his breath and you swear it wasn't some sort of auditory hallucination. that is what you heard, right?

"hm?" you turn to him, tilting your head to the side waiting for him to hopefully repeat himself.

"why'd you want him when I've been here all this time." his rhetorical reply left you blinking a couple of times, processing what exactly he's inferring. "in short, you have me. and I have you."

your chest starts heaving slowly. taehyun, your best friend, really said that. his fingers gently caresses yours, also supporting your weight on the grass while you both lean back.

the train of thought in your discombobulated mind is disrupted by him calling your name, now in a softer tone.

"so, what do you say? I'm willing to risk this friendship and try something more with you, ___. if you let me."

his says his confession, almost as if he's been yearning for you to be his for a while, but is it wrong that you still can't stop thinking about yeonjun?

"taehyun," you sit upright, holding his hand in yours. "I'm going to be honest with you, but promise me don't get mad."

the hope in taehyuns eyes disappears, feeling his heart sink to his stomach ready for your rejection. he nods.

"I love you, and always have, but that's because you're my best friend. and at the moment, yeonjun left quite the impression on me so he's still on my mind, but there's nothing much that helps him in his favour."

"so what you're saying is?" your fingers interlock with his, your thumb rubbing the back of his.

"is that I'm willing to try this with you, because, unlike you," you tease, "I like to give people chances."

you prod at his side as he exhales and rolls his eyes playfully.

"I couldn't risk you being whisked away before I even made a move on you." taehyun defends himself the best he could.

"no but really, from time to time I have felt like I've loved you more than a friend. so that's why I want to try, but can we take it slow?"

"yeah, of course. I'll just have to push yeonjun out your thoughts first." his comment makes you laugh.

taehyun's singular dimpled smile returns and it's contagious, he has you smiling back at him too. you didn't realise when you two ended up sitting closer to each other to close the gap, but you took the opportunity to lean your head on his shoulder.

"and you are kinda cute."

I don’t believe that MHJ bought any awards for nwjs. They had a good year last year so I’ve never side eyed them winning. What was crazy to me was Jimin not winning anything for these western awards when he got noms or not being nominated in the first place (since hybe didn’t bother to submit him) when he had an incredible year. I do believe that Hybe used their connections to get them stages and these brands, but that’s nothing out the ordinary because I expect that from a company.

For any tokki to say that nwjs is mistreated is straight lie. They’re dragging it. Literally saw a post scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to prove it because they were sitting on the floor in the big ass practice room of a multi million dollar building watching reaction vids on an iPad…Like had this situation with hybe not occurred, tokkis wouldn’t even be brining that claim up so we’re ignoring that. And I honestly don’t care about what’s happening with MHJ. She’s weird down and with how she’s been moving, you’d think tokkis would prioritize those girls over wanting to keep MHJ intact just cause they prize her visual concepts.

The amount of hit tweets I’ve seen from kpop stans trying to relate hybe’s transgressions to groups that have never had any connection to that company (or brining up groups that disbanded before hybe was even formed) proves how stupid these people are. And then it’s mainly exols chatting. They truly believe that exo was so peak in quality that it’s just so unfathomable to them that they fell off. The conversation couldn’t just stay on the topic of corrupt ceos. They always have to bring BTS into it.

HYBE and Min Hee Jin...

There's some new backstabbing going on in the world of K-pop since the spectacular ousting of Lee Soo Man from SM Entertainment. His prodigy and ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin is allegedly trying to get out of HYBE. On April 22, HYBE initiated an audit against ADOR’s management, including CEO Min Hee Jin, after reportedly detecting attempts by ADOR to become independent.

Following the reports, ADOR released the following statement; Min Hee Jin was upset over HYBE and Belift stealing her ides and copying NewJeans in favor of their new girl group ILLIT (which is true, imo). But if it's true that she's trying to go behind HYBE's back and go independent, she might get sued by HYBE (because that would be highly illegal). Anyway, this could turn into a huge fight over ADOR.

"Hello. This is ADOR Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as ADOR, CEO Min Hee Jin).

ADOR is publicly addressing the incident of ILLIT copying NewJeans to protect our artist NewJeans and for the healthy development of the music industry and culture in Korea.

HYBE operates a multi-label system for various labels to independently create their music and pursue cultural diversity. ADOR is one of those labels. Ironically, ADOR and our agency artist NewJeans’ cultural achievements are being most severely infringed upon by HYBE.

BELIFT LAB, one of HYBE’s labels, debuted the five-member girl group ILLIT in March of this year. After ILLIT’s teaser photos were released, explosive reactions spread online saying, “I thought it was NewJeans.” ILLIT is copying NewJeans in all aspects of entertainment activities including hair, makeup, clothing, choreography, photos, videos, and event appearances. ILLIT is being assessed as being “Min Hee Jin style,” “Min Hee Jin type,” and “an imitation of NewJeans.” It’s a truly shameful situation.

HYBE chairman Bang Si Hyuk produced ILLIT’s debut album. The copying of NewJeans by ILLIT was not done independently by BELIFT LAB but also involves HYBE. HYBE, a leading company in K-pop, is blinded by short-term profits and is mass-producing unoriginality by copying successful cultural content without hesitation.

NewJeans is currently preparing for a comeback in May. However, ILLIT has caused NewJeans to be brought up when they are not promoting at the moment. The appearance of an imitation has caused NewJeans’ image to be consumed and has caused concern and fatigue to fans and the public with unnecessary involvement in disputes. The main culprits who created this situation are HYBE and BELIFT LAB, but the damage caused by this is entirely on ADOR and NewJeans.

There are reactions that it is understandable that ILLIT is similar to NewJeans as they are both under HYBE labels. Some even think that ADOR and NewJeans have allowed or consented to this similarity. However, these reactions are clearly a misunderstanding, and we want to clarify this. A multi-label system is a system for each label to independently create the music they want, not a system to give indulgences to other labels to copy the cultural achievements of another label just because they are affiliated labels.

And ADOR has never allowed or given consent to anyone, including HYBE and BELIFT LAB, to copy NewJeans’ achievements. ADOR does not want NewJeans and ILLIT to be associated in any way. We have no intention of tolerating promotions such as groups being sibling groups just because they debuted under HYBE labels.

ADOR has already officially raised the issue of the copying incident and a series of behaviors taken by HYBE against NewJeans to HYBE and BELIFT LAB. However, HYBE and BELIFT LAB did not admit their wrongdoings and were busy making excuses, delaying concrete answers. Amidst this, HYBE suddenly informed today (April 22, 2024) that they would suspend and dismiss CEO Min Hee Jin from her duties, stating that there is “concern that [CEO Min Hee Jin] could significantly damage ADOR’s corporate value.”

At the same time, they are attempting ridiculous media play such as that CEO Min Hee Jin “tried to seize management rights.” It is incomprehensible how a legitimate complaint to protect the cultural achievements of our artist NewJeans could harm ADOR’s interests or how it could be an act of seizing control of ADOR.

It appears that HYBE and BELIFT LAB along with Chairman Bang Si Hyuk think that simply driving CEO Min Hee Jin out of the company will end this issue without providing proper apologies or measures. However, ADOR will use all possible means and methods to protect the cultural achievements that NewJeans has worked for and to prevent further infringement due to copying. We want to make it clear that we cannot tolerate copying and various unfair actions continuing against ADOR and NewJeans.

HYBE and BELIFT LAB may try to dilute the incident from debut by highlighting the differences between NewJeans and ILLIT as ILLIT’s activities increase. Misunderstandings by fans and the public may also increase over time. As a result, ADOR has decided to announce an official position after sufficient discussion with the NewJeans members and legal representatives.

Through this statement, we hope that HYBE and BELIFT LAB will face their wrongdoings and contribute to the Korean music industry and culture through fervent contemplation and creation while respecting the cultural achievements of others.

Hi, Anon! Don't worry, I don't mind sharing my views here, as flawed as they can be. I love BTS, but I’m supporting Min Hee-Jin and NewJeans right now.

I think BTS are going to be fine regardless. I’m waiting to see Taehyung's reaction on this, maybe with some encoded message, if ever happens --I kind of expect he will be supporting both ADOR CEO and the girls given that NewJeans came to visit him very recently. However, I’d understand if members didn’t say anything –no matter their age, staying out of trouble is a must for keeping brands, avoiding more scandals, and all that. They really can’t speak out, right? From a Westerner point of view, It’s disappointing and a bit tragic. They’re wealthy, have high social status, honor and reputation, but even so theyre unable to do anything to help the situation in public. They're just like company puppets.

I think Hybe just hired Min Heejin for her experience, credibility and connections, but wouldn’t trust her too much. In a way I’m glad I’m watching this unravelling first hand, as I’ve read fans already trying to downplay her talents and the role she played into changing K-Pop in a new direction. At least, i know how all that truly happened in reality.

My take on this is that Hybe wanted to get rid of MHJ quickly and well They lost their case when they decided to turn the case from a professional issue into a personal attack, with a witch-hunt against her waged in public arena. I knew that MHJ wouldn’t throw in the towel as easily. The woman has strong core, I knew she was a warrior and would fight back. I don’t judge her at all. It was Hybe who fared a war against her first, and playing dirty at that, they wanted her to resign quickly. She had to fight back. Women with strong believes will do that, you can’t break them so easily. It backfired on them spectacularly. I think she was frustrated with Hybe meddling in her affairs, and she was trying to gain more control. I guess Hybe became desperate. Min Heejin still has a chance at overturning Ador’s contract which is likely to contain abusive conditions. She seems to be buying time to salvage her position; however, I believe she’ll be getting fired either way.

As I said, I’m currently on her side until something else happens that changes my mind. I’m on Min Heejin and NewJeans side --I love these girls.

I knew, even before MHJ released her first statement, that the case was related to ILLIT being too much close to NewJeans concept as the reason why the relationship deteriorated so quickly. I thought this fight would be for better positioning in this new 5th gen. crop of groups. Her innovative vision had changed the current state of Kpop fundamentally –not only in visuals, but choreo and style of songs. As she stated in her interview for Fast Company last November:

"With NewJeans, I was trying to target people who weren’t interested [in K-Pop] ... I wanted to have a group that everybody, regardless of their gender and age, could love. ... I knew that if I made good music and sophisticated concepts that people would want it ... I put a lot of effort and thought into creating good quality, good essence. I thought that if I could just focus more on creating the best essence, it would make my life easier with the second part, [the business].

[The NewJeans hit] Super Shy is a song with repetitive verses and [doesn’t have] a really strong hook. ... it’s a repetitive song ... I just let the song be the way it had to be. ... people think that having loops is boring ... everybody wants to make a song that follows the traditional rules of a hit song. ... I don’t really believe in stitching together different parts from different songs, I just want to use the song in its entirety.

I wasn’t really interested in idol groups growing up because their style of music was very different from the ones that I personally preferred. If I had to pick my style, it would lean more toward indie music. I’m particularly interested in jazz. ...

I want to make NewJeans’s music so that it will still sound really beautiful after 10, 20 years. You never throw away your favorite pair of jeans—your favorite pair of clothing you can wear every single day. I think the kind of clothes that you can wear every single day are like pop music.

When we do our work, we just want to bear in mind the fact that we’re cool, whatever we do is great, and whatever result comes out, we just want to embrace it. In order to maintain this kind of chill attitude, I have to juggle different things like I mentioned earlier. It’s really difficult to make money while looking cool. But I guess I’m aiming for an impossible goal.

With NewJeans, I want to [help] them make fun, happy memories—something that they can really look back on and enjoy even when they grow old. They chose to work with me [instead of] going to school. Our contract is for seven years. And seven years is almost like three years of high school and four years of college. So what I said to them in the beginning was, “Think of this as studying with me for seven years.” They’re so young, and I wanted them to think of this experience as studying, and not to focus too much on the numbers.

I think when you’re working with such young girls and [you’re] somebody who owns this business, you have to have an ethical sense of mind. What I wanted to do was, just like school, I wanted to teach them ways that would help them live a really happy life later on.

I think I had these thoughts because we’re in the K-pop idol scene and because I have to work with really young girls. .... But K-pop is evolving and advancing. And I think having these values in my mind will help me going forward".

You can see the change spreading in latest Riize single Impossible. She went for a change in the whole mood, music, dance and visuals. The dancing is way more organic and natural, fluid. Group dynamics presented as friends meeting on schools' breaks, dancing and enjoying themselves together. Visuals would rely on natural scenery as much as possible. You can see the girls having fun, so much laid-back. They would look happy within and outside work environment, comparing them to Le Sserafim, which seemed to be struggling more with difficult choreos, severe workout and diets.

Taehyung chose her to produce his solo too, and that solo was very much impregnated with this same vision of hers:

I never expected to work on V’s solo album. He asked me for my help, and he’s so popular, so I thought that it was a good opportunity for me to try new things with less pressure. The title song [on Layover, called Slow Dancing, has an instrumental outro that] is almost one-minute long. That is not commercial at all. It’s an artistic experiment. And it was a try I could go for because he is really popular.

Some BTS fans want to compare how well one member’s album does over another member’s. BTS is a group that’s been around for 10 years now. They did their duty, basically. So I think it’s time to focus less on the stats and just enjoy their music—[let them] do what they want to do.

My mindset when I was producing for V was to help him do music that he could really enjoy. In commercial terms, there wasn’t a reason for me to work on that album. It was just a one-off thing. It was not that we were going to work together continuously going forward. And I was busy enough with NewJeans. So me diverting some of my time to that project could have been a little risky. But his intentions were really pure. I wanted to make him nice memories or maybe give him a gift. Unlike NewJeans, he doesn’t have to obsess over numbers and things. And personally, I just hope that NewJeans won’t either.

Pornography is a Civil Rights Issue for Women

Women are extremely isolated, women don't have credibility, women are not believed by people who make social policy. In addition, the harm of pornography remains invisible because women have been historically excluded from the protections of the Constitution; and as a result, the violations of our human rights, when they don't occur the same way violations to men occur, have not been recognized or taken seriously, and we do not have remedies for them under law.

In addition, pornography is invisible in its harm to women because women are poorer than men and many of the women exploited in pornography are very poor, many of them are illiterate, and also because there is a great deal of female compliance with brutality, and the compliance is based on fear, it's based on powerlessness and it is based on a reaction to the very real violence of the pornographers. Finally, the harm is invisible because of the smile, because women are made to smile, women aren't just made to do the sex acts. We are made to smile while we do them.

So you will find in pornography women penetrating themselves with swords or daggers, and you will see the smile. You will see things that cannot be done to a human being and that are done to men only in political circumstances of torture, and you will see a woman forced to smile.

And this smile will be believed, and the injury to her as a human being, to her body and to her heart and to her soul, will not be believed. Now, we have been told that we have an argument here about speech, not about women being hurt. And yet the emblem of that argument is a woman bound and gagged and we are supposed to believe that that is speech. Who is that speech for? We have women being tortured and we are told that that is somebody's speech? Whose speech is it? It's the speech of a pimp, it is not the speech of a woman. The only words we hear in pornography from women are that women want to be hurt, ask to be hurt, like to be raped, get sexual pleasure from sexual violence; and even when a woman is covered in filth, we are supposed to believe that her speech is that she likes it and she wants more of it.

The reality for women in this society is that pornography creates silence for women. The pornographers silence women. Our bodies are their language. Their speech is made out of our exploitation, our subservience, our injury and our pain, and they can't say anything without hurting us, and when you protect them, you protect only their right to exploit and hurt us.

hello kind internet blogger! i was just curious whether there are any recent/imminent debuts that you’ve been following or are excited about. for me, I’ve never really checked in for a debut before since I’ve only started poking around other kpop spaces in any serious way since bts’ hiatus. i’m catching up on tws’ debut since I liked their ep and think it’s adorable that they’re just a bunch of introverts who froze up entirely as soon as they were faced with fans, but I’m not much feeling illit’s so far (as an aside something about calling an album ‘super real me’ faceplants straight into inauthenticity to me). i followed a bit of vcha’s and just can’t do it rip. anyways just curious!

Tbh, I never check out a group's debut unless someone asks for my opinion or I get curious. I think NMIXX was the last group I liked from the beginning. I'm more likely to check out Big 4 girl group debuts I guess, but not international or survival show groups.

I cannot keep up with 5th gen at all haha. And I feel weird about these groups since all the members are babies. I like some groups with minors, like IVE, Stayc, NMIXX, or LSF, but it took a couple of good comebacks for me to decide I like them, and it helps they don't have sexy concepts (LSF kind of do, I guess?).

Anyway, I don't get excited about a group's debut. I listen to groups I know and occasionally check out some newer ones. I'm a very casual kpop fan (correction: I'm a hardcore kpop fan who likes every group but BTS casually lmao).

I heard about TSW's debut! And I just saw them on the 3rd reaction video to V's Friends, and they were all babies! They definitely seemed shy, but rookies are often like that haha.

Classification of Weathering in Rocks and Its Engineering Implications- Juniper Publishers

Abstract

A critical review on the description and classification of weathering in rocks has been presented in this paper. This paper starts with a brief description on several factors causing weathering in rocks followed by the weathering mechanism and the description of weathering in rocks. A review of existing codes and guidelines on weathering and its implications to describe the engineering properties of rocks has been presented. From the point of view that weathering process modify the mass engineering properties of rocks which are quite unpredictable, this type of review work becomes necessary. The present paper forms a useful source of information for geologists and geotechnical engineers working on weathered rocks.

Introduction

Weathering of rocks is a purely subjective term and is defined differently by different authors [1-4]. However, weathering in general is the process which brings about several changes to the properties of rock mass due to its exposure to changing environmental (physical, chemical and biological) conditions and hence from the engineering point of view, grading of weathering becomes very important. The alteration in the engineering properties of rocks due to weathering may occur at the material scale (rock strength, swelling potential, slaking index, compressibility, consolidation characteristics etc.) and/or mass scale (discontinuities, fracture, joint, settlement, permeability etc.), as reported in the literature [4-12]. Moreover, behavior of the weathered rocks depends upon the environmental conditions, which it is further exposed to. For example, weathered rocks in dry condition may swell or start disintegrating, when coming in contact with water [13]. Similarly, different applications place emphasis on different attributes of the weathered rocks [14]. When constructing a building on weathered rocks, the engineer will be interested more on its bearing capacity; whereas in case of slopes and embankments he is more concerned with changes in permeability as a result of weathering [15]. However, grading weathered rocks is a very difficult task and as a result, the modification in various engineering properties of a weathered rock is quite unpredictable and can’t follow any calculation technique [4,16]. In addition, engineering may expose the rock mass to a new environment and weathering may continue even after the construction has been over. Efforts have been made by the researchers, engineers and geologists to classify weathered rocks and its effects on various engineering properties of rock mass. Moreover, codes and guidelines have been formulated by the individuals (Table 1) and the international societies like International Society for Rock Mechanics [17] and the Engineering Group of Geological Society Working Party. In this paper, a review on various aspects of these guidelines and its engineering implications has been highlighted.

Weathering of Rocks

Weathering in rocks is a very complex phenomenon that can be presented in a matrix form in (Figure 1). It is not only the environmental conditions and the rock properties on which the rate of weathering will depend but also the combination of these factors, duration of exposure and the types of environmental cycles (like wetting-drying, freeze-thaw etc.) that matters the most. Moreover, it is the distribution and concentration of the weather-resistant (e.g., quartz, feldspar etc.) and weather prone minerals (e.g., biotitic, muscovite, hornblende etc.), that will affect the grade of weathering [4,18-20].

In spite of these limitations, some of the researchers [16,2023] have tried to correlate the rate of weathering through various laboratory tests including X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis; study of minerals using Scanning electron microscope (SEM); measurement of specific surface area (SSA), total cation exchange capacity (TCEC), type of exchangeable cations and the pH value. These relationships are very helpful for understanding the weathering mechanism in different types of rocks. For example, weathering due to temperature is more on dark rocks such as basalt but is less on white rocks like chalk [4]. On the other hand, weathering due to the effects of chemical fluids will be more on chalks than basalt.

Rocks of sedimentary and metamorphic origin (such as clay shale's, poorly to moderately cemented sandstones, marl, and anhydrite) are very moisture-sensitive and hence get weathered due to reaction with water [14]. Basic and ultra basic igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, limestone, sandstone and mudshale, which contain plenty of silicate minerals, easily convert into clay minerals such as montmorillonite, illite and kaolinite through oxidation and reduction, hydration and dehydration, ion exchange and leaching process [23]. Higgs [24] has reported that igneous rocks with fine-grain sizes are more weather resistant as compared to the coarse-grained types. Moreover, the deterioration in some of the rocks like basalt increase significantly due to the presence of secondary minerals which itself are product of weathering of the fresh rocks [13,24,25,].

Description of weathering in rocks

Due to the effect of weathering, there occurs an overall change in the engineering properties of rock mass. Hence, from the engineering point of view, it becomes very important to classify the weathering state of a rock mass. Various researchers, engineers and geologists [4,6,12,16,26-32] have tried to do so in the past (Table 1). It might be easy to understand the mechanism or process of weathering in rocks through various laboratory tests, but very difficult to quantify it. As mentioned earlier, weathering is a purely subject term and there is no such calculation technique or laboratory tests available, that can quantify the amount of weathering in rock mass. Moreover, depending upon the types of engineering works, the rock mass will be further exposed to weathering that can't be predicted. With these limitations, different classifications for different sets of environmental and rock conditions have been made.

However, it is observed that the descriptive terms used for classifying weathered rocks are purely subjective. For example, the color seen by one person will depend on the type of light source, the background, the size of the object and the colors that have been seen immediately before [14]. Moreover, many times it has been seen that there is a mismatch of these descriptive terms (e.g. colors, decomposition, disintegration, discontinuities, fracture spacing etc.) in the core logs and core photographs due to their subjective in nature. The color of the rock samples just or nearly after drilling will vary from that taken after few hours depending upon the weather condition on site as shown in (Figure 2).

The concept of soil rock mass ratio [27,28] seems to be a better option to quantify the grade of weathering. Some of the researchers [33] have tried to gauge rate of weathering in relation with specific secondary mineral formation with the help of 14C methods. However, the soil mass ratio will again depends upon the friability or slaking nature of the rock mass and the environmental conditions to which it is further exposed to. Interestingly, most of the classification systems are based upon the changes in index properties of the weathered rock mass. A very few attempts [11] have been made to relate weathered rocks with its engineering properties. It can be mentioned here that some of the field test results like standard penetration test (SPT) blow count and the shear and compression wave velocities can precisely represent the weathering state in different rock mass. Donald et al. [19] suggested that the percentage of core recovery is an indication of soundness and degree of weathering of rock. Hence it is very important that relative measurements of rock quality is made by comparing ratios of field values of compression or shear wave velocities to laboratory values. Otherwise, it better to rate the weathering directly from the field tests like SPT, CPT or Pressure meter tests. With a difference from the other classification systems, Price [4] pointed out that in the description of mass weathering for engineering purposes, the uniformity or regularity and style of weathering is a key issue. Keeping this in view, he suggested to classify mass weathering as uniform(ly) weathered; complex(ly) weathered; core stone weathered or solution weathered.

Due to the fact that a large range of rock types and masses and weathering processes exists, there are many possibilities for future classifications of particular rock masses weathered in particular environments. It is suggested that classification of weathering in rocks for engineering purposes should lie in simplification rather than elaboration, paying particular regard to establishing the boundary between that part of the weathered mass which will behave as an engineering soil and that which will behave as an engineering rock [4]. Although, the present grading systems are very useful, it still fails to quantify the changes in engineering properties of rocks, due to weathering.

Engineering implications

The purpose of grading weathered rocks is to provide an engineering classification of rock mass for a specific project [34-36]. Moreover, for that specific project, it is very important to analyze the state of weathering by considering the types of rock mass. An interesting example is that, weathered zones in rocks can be good aquifer, but it is not so, if filled with secondary clays produced during the weathering process [13]. Again, it is reported [29] that the trend line between permeability with degree of weathering is not very consistent in case of granite. Similarly, when the problem is related to slopes, the engineers would be more interested on the zones of weakness or discontinuities, occurred as a result of weathering or some other means [19]. However, if weathering of parent rocks results in an accumulation of weathering-resistant materials (such as, quartz, igneous and metamorphic siliceous grains, siliceous cement and chert), it will increase the abrasive character of the materials along the slopes [12].

In general, the strength and bearing capacity of rocks decrease as a result of weathering. Contradictorily, dissolution and subsequent precipitation of carbonates below the ground surface increase the grain contacts due to cementation and hence increase the strength of loose sedimentary deposits. In addition to this, weather ability of some of the rocks like shale's and mudstones is extremely variable, and rocks that are likely to degrade on exposure should be further characterized by use of tests for durability under standard drying and wetting cycle. If, for example, wetting and drying cycles reduce shale to grain size, and then rapid slaking and erosion in the field is probable when rock is exposed [37]. The above mentioned are a few of the examples, that highlights the responsibilities of the engineers and designers, when dealing with weathered rocks.

Concluding Remarks

Weathering in rocks is a subjective term and hence it is difficult to quantify it. However, problems in weathered rocks can be tackled easily with proper interpretation of the data available, both at the material and mass level. The descriptive terms commonly used for classification of weathered rocks are mostly the index properties of rocks and are subjective in nature. Attempts should be made to correlate the weathering state of rocks to its engineering properties.

After a car accident left me with seven broken ribs, a collapsed lung and “the worst compound fracture’ the maxillofacial specialist at the hospital had ever seen, my body was wrecked and my confidence not far behind. For any person, this would be a traumatic experience, but as a 30-year-old working actor and model, my future was suddenly completely unsure. As easy as it would have been to give up, my near-fatal accident turned out to be the ultimate blessing in disguise — that experience sparked the fire in my soul’s purpose. A walking ball of inflammation, I began researching ingredients for how I was going to accelerate my healing both internally and externally. Along the way, I shared everything I had learned about nutrition, natural healing, skincare and how to feel better about the reflection in the mirror with the rest of the world.

There came a point in my accident recovery where new passion, fun and hobby displaced my previous worry and intermittent pain. Researching and experimenting with various therapeutic ingredients became a creative outlet for me. While many of my friends found my new ‘hobby’ a bit crazy at times; I never let that stop me. In addition to the obvious results, I found a sense of encouragement for my recovery in researching and learning about certain studies and ingredients that helped others heal their scarring. It gave me hope and further validated the physiological capabilities of my ‘crazy’ concoctions.

For those of you like me, who share in the joy of science, biology and nature’s magic, I would love to share with you some of the most impressive research on the ingredients that accelerated the healing of my skin after my accident.

Skin Restorative Ingredients: What My Research Revealed

Medicinal Clays

It turns out, clays have been used therapeutically throughout various cultures. While one might be quick to discredit someone with mud on their face, the fact of the matter is there are many scientific discoveries associated with use of hydrated clays. There are 2500 scientific articles published in PubMed to sort the scientific works have been done on the effects of this clay on body function.

For example, Illite and Kaolin have ionic properties that affect antibacterial activity. In fact, studies have found that the natural and ion-exchanged illite clays significantly decrease bacterial load, skin inflammation and gross wound morphology. There’s even research that dives deeper into the chemistry of clay’s antibacterial effects, providing evidence that suggest some antibacterial clays can promote similar bactericidal (bacterial death inducing) reactions as effect as synthetic antibiotics. 1,2

Pearl Powder

Pearl Powder is perhaps the most sophisticated exfoliates created by Mother Nature. If you’re unfamiliar, Pearl is one of the well-known traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) tonics used for treating various skin disorders and beautifying the skin, mostly due to its abundant antioxidant, protein and mineral contents.

In one study, pearl powder supplemented people showed a substantial increase in total antioxidant capacity. Tests done found a significant increase in master antioxidants glutathione and SOD (superoxide dismutase) content and activity. It was also found that pearl considerably suppressed lipid peroxidation, which is the oxidative degradation of fats in the body. These outcomes sum up to one clear fact about pearl, it is a supremely potent antioxidant and thereby makes a novel, natural remedy for treating various age-related degenerative disorders. For me, this is the kind of data that helps me make sense of why pearl powder makes my skin soft and smooth. 3

Colostrum

Colostrum is yet another power-house ingredient backed by science. In short, it is a natural source of many important vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids. However, perhaps the most impressive part of colostrum is its unique content of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1).

In regards to skin health and regeneration, colostrum and its IGF-1 content sparked great interest for me. IGF factor 1 (IGF-I) is widely distributed in various tissues, including the skin. It turns out, IGF-I is strongly expressed in injured areas, where it plays an important role in epidermal and dermal wound healing. Repeated studies have shown the beneficial effects of topically applied IGF-I on wound healing, due to its stimulating effects on collagen synthesis in skin fibroblasts, the proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes, and angiogenesis. 4,5 As collagen production starts to decline with age, it is essential to make healthy skin care a priority by choosing products with ingredients that will keep your skin functioning at its peak, no matter what age you are. 6,7

In simpler terms, colostrum promotes the regeneration of fresh skin. I greatly attribute my regular use of colostrum and its effects to a surprisingly minimal appearance of scarring after my accident.

Pracaxi/Acai Oil

After my accident, I had the worst compound jaw fracture the resident maxillofacial surgeon of Cedars Sinai had ever seen. We actually had to hire a private surgeon and he assisted him. So you can only imagine the wounds that inflicted my face, negatively affecting the integrity of my skin. Normally, intense wounds means equally intense skin scarring. Luckily, scar formation itself varies based on many factors and can be mitigated by therapeutic agents, such as the beneficial fatty acids found in pracaxi oil.

According to clinical research, the topical application pracaxi oil to injured skin led to considerable improvements in wound healing and scar attributes. Additionally, it has been found that acai oil, applied topically to diabetic ulcerations can dramatically improve healing, up to 100%. With my initial fear of scarring after my accident, discovering natural ingredients with regenerative abilities were a true saving grace. 8 9

Plant-derived Stem Cells

When I said I was willing to try anything to improve my recovery, I meant it. Somewhere along my journey, I came across compelling research on the use of plant stem cells for skin regeneration. The science and use of plant-stem cells is an interest focus for leading edge cosmetic treatment. When you consider the unique self-pairing, tissue regenerative processes of plants; it’s amazing to think that we could utilize their cells to also assist our skin cells in regeneration. That’s what plant stem-cell science is all about and it’s quite intriguing.

According to the research and experimentation, plant-stem cells contain phytohormones that have an antioxidant effect on the skin. In fact, one study found that a product derived of plant-stem cells greatly reduced wrinkles in the crow’s feet area of the face 10. It was found that the depth of face wrinkles became shallower by 8% after 2 weeks and shallower by 15% after 4 weeks. 11

Plant-Derived Vitamin A

Vitamin A plays major regulatory roles in the functioning and health of the skin matrix. Vitamin A is typically found in two forms; carotene or retinol. However, with the help of modern technology, we are capable of extracting a retinol-like plant-based vitamin A, derived of the popular superfood, Alfalfa.

Plant-derived Vitamin A has some amazing science behind it. Sourced organically from France, it contains similar beneficial polysaccharides as retinol, called galactomannans. This gives plant-derived vitamin A retinol-like-activity because it’s working on similar biological markers. Best of all, it achieves these effects without inducing irritancy on the skin like Retinol so often does. It can greatly improve the appearance and health of aged skin by significantly reducing fine lines and Crow’s feet.

In fact, study has found that topical plant-derived Vitamin A improves fine wrinkles associated with natural aging. The induction of glycosaminoglycan; beneficial mucopolysaccharides, increase collagen production and are most likely responsible for the minimization of fine lines. Additionally, plant-derived Vitamin A treated skin improves skin matrix synthesis, making it more resilient to skin injury and ulceration. 12

CoQ10

Also known as ubiquinone coenzyme q10, CoQ10 is an endogenously synthesized lipid-soluble antioxidant, which is essential for cellular energy production. However, like all aging, this precious molecule is diminished with skin aging too. Stress of all sorts all tend to decrease the antioxidant presence and activity of coQ10. Luckily, both dietary and topical Q10 treatment is incredibly beneficial with regard to effective Q10 replenishment.

In study, application of Q10-containing formulas significantly increased the levels of this particular quinone in the skin surface and even in the deeper layers of the epidermis. More importantly was the effect this had on the skin; the results founds that stressed-skin improved by reduction of free radicals and the increase in antioxidant capacity. In other words, the topical use of CoQ10 improves the skin’s resilience to oxidative stress. Considering that oxidative stress results in the well-known signs of skin aging, like the appearance of wrinkles and lines as well as loss of elasticity, CoQ10 application serves as a useful anti-aging novelty. These are just a few of the reasons I feature CoQ10 in both my Night Cream and Gold Serum. 13, 14, 15

How I Applied My Research To My Routine

Purely through self-experimentation and trial and error, what made most sense to me was combining THE best, most effective ingredients that I could source from nature along with the latest and greatest in cutting edge science. The process began by isolating carefully sourced ingredients based on texture alone, then combining them with different carrier oils then moving forward and adding essential oils and extracts that fit my creation and desired emulsion.

I knew I wanted a dense feel that would be there throughout the night, nourishing and healing the scar area through deep hydration. I tried a couple products in the beginning before making my own, and they would absorb quickly leaving me questioning its level of effectiveness if it is gone within minutes. What made the most sense to me is a rich concentrated emulsion that was thicker, therefore moisturizing the target areas for longer periods of time. Devoid of harsh, drying ingredients. In search for the perfect blend of botanicals, it was fascinating to me to learn of certain ingredients like Sea Buckthorn and find out about it’s very rare Omega-7 fatty acid capacity.

In my night cream specifically, in a cast iron pan, I would melt down thicker ingredients like Beeswax, Cacao Butter and Manuka honey then combine with cold-pressed oils to create an highly concentrated, nourishing emulsion for my skin that I would apply after rinsing off The Clay Mask. I still have that first concoction with little dimples of cacao butter strewn throughout, preserved solely by K-Factor 16 Manuka Honey. That concoction turned into what is now, our award-winning Alitura Night Cream.

As you can see, my skin-care craze isn’t as whacky as it seems—there is credible scientific evidence that backs my madness. In a culture that is quick to go under the knife or get an injection it’s imperative to remember that none of those options actually help keeping the appearance of the skin youthful and glowing. Using skincare products that are dense in topical nutrients are vital for healthy looking skin. 16,17 At this point, you’re likely wondering how to put it all to practice. So, without further ado, I’m happy to share with you my personal skincare routine…

Here’s What It Looks Like To Date:

Pearl Cleansing: I start off my skin-care routine with a traditional step; cleansing. However, I use a not-so-conventional cleanser, the Pearl Cleanser. As we discussed, this unique cleanser cleans the skin while protecting it from the stressful effects of free radicals. *Wet your face with warm, clean water *Apply the cleanser with your hands, gently working it into the skin *Wash it off *Let your face dry

Derma Rolling: Next up is Derma Rolling. Derma rolling is one of the most powerful weapons for getting the what I call the “Alitura Glow.” This is one of the many high-end medi spas best kept secrets. Microneedling, a.k.a. Collagen Induction Therapy, is exactly that: an effective way to stimulate collagen synthesis and simultaneously break down malformed tissue such as acne and surgical scars (keloid scars are the exception as Microneedling can cause more keloid scarring).18 It works by creating “micro-tears” or generating acute, inflammation, that initiates the healing or regeneration of the outer layer of the skin. It also helps open the poors up, allowing any of the medicinal ingredients in your serums or moisturizers to absorb more deeper.

Home-use vs. Medical Microneedling has everything to do with needle size. The Alitura Dermaroller comes in .25 mm, .5 mm, and 1 mm needle sizes making it ideal for safe home use. Within just a few treatments over the course of 6-8 weeks you will notice visible changes in the texture of your skin at the surface level and plumpness and contour since your dermis has more collagen giving the understructure a firmer foundation for a more youthful contour to the jawline and cheekbones.

In addition to these benefits, derma-rolling can improve collagen synthesis, heal scars, prevents premature skin aging, reduces stretch marks and helps balance skin tone. 19

Clay Mask: My third step is to follow up Derma Rolling with The Alitura Clay Mask. As we’ve discussed, the mask on its own is a wonder treatment that thoroughly purifies, exfoliates, detoxifies and revitalizes the skin by stimulating blood flow. Alitura Night Cream: I ‘stack’ my Night Cream and Gold Serum before bed. I apply a thin layer of The Gold Serum all over my face, neck and eye area and then follow with thin layer of The Night Cream as a protective, ultra-hydrating barrier that deeply conditions the dermal layer of my skin which is the most important time to do so, while you are in one position for hours. To me, there truly is nothing better than feeling good with your what you see in the mirror. One thing I don’t touch on enough is that my journey into skincare really started in college where I became insecure to take my shirt off because of bad back acne that I had. Growing into my body, hormones racing, using poor products and consuming inflammatory dormitory food at UC Berkeley led to it. It was a bit deflating to wake up and see some type of irritation on my face and body and it really bugged me. Made me self conscious. It was then and there that I started to pinpoint the problem. I was a scrawny freshman athlete at Cal, and needed to gain weight quickly as a Division 1 Pac-10 athlete, so I was always scouring the back of food labels for the big three: 1) Protein 2) Calories 3) Fat. That attention to detail on labels led me to look down into ingredients on skin and hair-care as well. Tossing the heavily marketed, big brand name skincare for a better, cleaner ingredient deck yielded results and my knowledge grew year after year.

After my accident that knowledge grew quickly as I voraciously read and researched ingredients and topical remedies to heal myself. It has been said that ‘necessity is the mother of invention,’ and I couldn’t agree more. My accident not only led to me finding my passion through healing myself, but I found my purpose along the way. To be able to share what I have created with people all over the world in an effort to make people feel better about what THEY see in the mirror… it gives me goosebumps as I type this. I am grateful.
