James couldn’t believe his eyes. He blinked hard, thinking his exhaustion had caught up with him. No, the blonde woman on his porch had to be the night-shift nurse who lived across the street—she often liked to indulge in late-night baking on her nights off, and there were times she would come to James for an ingredient she was missing, or to give him a small sampling of her confectionery creations.
(He had the sudden, jarring, embarrassing realization that she may have been flirting with him the whole time… Is that why she hasn’t come around in months?)
“Rose,” he said again when blinking stupidly for at least ten seconds didn’t transform Rose into anyone else.
“Hi,” she said quietly. She looked exhausted; there were prominent shadows beneath her eyes and her shoulders drooped like a heavy weight sat upon them.
Her gaze flicked over his shoulder, and her face fell. “Oh. Sorry. Didn’t realize you had company. I’ll just…” She thumbed behind herself to the dark road. How did she get here? “Sorry.”
Before he could protest, Jack clapped James on the shoulder and announced, “No, no. I was getting ready to head out. Come on, get in out of the cold.”
Jack pressed a smacking kiss to James’s cheek, then muttered, “Talk to her,” into his ear. He then stepped forward and gave Rose a loose hug and kiss on the cheek before he walked to his vehicle that was parked on the side of the street.
They turned to watch Jack start his car and drive off into the night. James looked at Rose, then at the squarish plastic Tupperware container she held. She was absently flicking her thumb nail across the tab on the lid.
“What’ve you got there?” he asked, nodding to the container.
Rose chewed on her bottom lip and pushed her hair behind her ear. “Well. We’ve been playing a game all month, haven’t we? Time to celebrate.”
She popped the lid off the container and handed it to him. In it were half a dozen large, muffin-sized chocolate cupcakes, frosted in vanilla icing and decorated with pink and yellow star sprinkles. The words “Happy Birthday” were written in small, neat, glossy red letters across each cupcake. His stomach sank.
“It… it’s your birthday?” he croaked. Of course—of fucking course—today had been her birthday.
Rose nodded. “I… I didn’t want to let my entire birthday pass without spending some time with my favorite person.”
James nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat. “Hope you had fun.”
Rose raised an incredulous eyebrow, and the penny dropped.
“Me?” he squeaked, the knot in his chest loosening.
“Yes you, you numpty. Just because I’m angry with you doesn’t mean I stopped loving you. Do you not love me anymore because we fought?”
James’s knees weakened at the ‘l’ word. He took a step towards her, the arm not holding the cupcakes extended. Her face softened and she stepped into his proffered embrace. Her body was warm and solid against him. Heat prickled behind his eyes as he wrapped his arms as tightly around her as he could without upending the Tupperware container.
“I’m sorry, Rose. I’m so sorry. I…”
“Can we not do this on the front porch?” she asked, voice muffled. “S’cold.”
James was loath to let go of her, but he had to agree the night was getting frigid, especially for him, with his bare feet and thin pajama bottoms and t-shirt. With a sigh, he gave her a final squeeze and dropped his arms from around her waist, then stepped back to usher her into his home.
She toed off her shoes by the front door, and he could already predict her questions when she angled her head towards the hallway. “Did you paint something?”
James scratched the back of his neck. “Er. Yeah. Started repainting my bedroom.”
A small, sad smile tugged at the side of Rose’s mouth. “Needed something to keep your mind busy?”
“Something like that,” he admitted.
A more genuine smile crossed her face as she gestured to the Tupperware container he was holding. “Y’know, stress baking would've been cheaper.”
James blinked, then gaped down at the cupcakes he was holding. The font of the words was perfect cursive, the spread of the icing uniform and even. He blurted, “You made these?”
“Thanks for that vote of confidence,” she drawled. “Yes, I made them. Well. Elsa helped. She came over to my flat this afternoon. Bit of a girl’s night. Had pizza and wine, then made cupcakes. She’s actually really good at decorating; she’s got this whole set of frosting tips to make fancy designs. She did the lettering.”
“They look lovely. Very professional,” he said. He jutted his head to his kitchen, motioning for her to follow. She did, her quiet, shuffling footsteps falling into rhythm with his.
Rather than go into the kitchen, Rose peeled off to the living room, where Merry and Pippin were lounging on the sofa together, half-asleep. James watched her squat down in front of the cats and give them a bit of love before she returned to him.
“Should Jack have driven himself home?”
James glanced at Rose and saw her pointing to the kitchen table, where the mostly-empty bottle of wine sat. It had a few mouthfuls left.
“It was only half-full when we started,” James answered, picking up the bottle and hurriedly drinking the last of the wine. “This was from last weekend, when you and I… Anyway, he had one glass. I drank most of it. He should be fine.”
“Tell him to let us know when he gets home safely,” Rose said.
James snapped off a lazy salute then sent Jack a text, passing along Rose’s request. He set the Tupperware container of cupcakes on the counter before grabbing two clean bowls from the dishwasher he hadn’t bothered to empty.
“Oh, I really shouldn’t,” Rose said with a grimace. “I already had one after they came out of the oven. Plus pizza. M’gonna puff up like a balloon.”
She pinched her waist, and James frowned. “What are you talking about? You’re beautiful.”
Her cheeks flamed pink and she dropped her hand limply to her side.
“I had a huge, greasy burger and chips for dinner. D’you think I’m gonna puff up like a balloon?” he asked, tilting his head to the side.
“Well, no. But you’re…” She let her sentence dangle as she waved her hand vaguely up and down his body.
“And you’re…” He mirrored her gesture. “Rose, I find you absolutely beautiful, and you losing or gaining weight won’t change my opinion. Not that my opinion should matter. If you don’t want a cupcake, or if you’re not hungry, that’s fine. And again, not that you need my approval.”
Rose sighed and twisted her hands in front of herself before she turned away from him and rooted in his freezer for ice cream he always made sure to have on hand.
“I had a minor eating disorder as a teen,” Rose said quietly, pulling out the ice cream and shutting the freezer. “Nothing too serious. I was obsessed with my weight, and was really careful with what I ate. I counted and logged calories. I grew out of it when I realized watching what I ate made me feel even worse about myself. Of course I still tried to eat healthy and to eat reasonably-sized portions, but I stopped being so strict with it. I obviously started putting on some weight, nothing too drastic, but Jimmy would often tease me and tell me to lay off the chips or whatever, because rock stars don’t date chubby girls.”
James’s ears were ringing with rage and heartbreak, and he was furious with himself for everything he had accused Rose of last night regarding Jimmy.
“Rose, I…”
“As I said, I’m fine now and I don’t really care about my weight or body image as much,” Rose interrupted, setting the ice cream on the counter in front of him. “But sometimes those thoughts pop up without me realizing it. Like they did just now.”
Unsure of how to respond, James instead took a cupcake out of the Tupperware container, unwrapped the paper from the bottom, and set it into the bowl. “Did I… did I say something wrong?”
“No. Quite the opposite, actually. You told me your opinion, but didn’t shove it in my face or try to force me to believe you. And like I said, I don’t often realize when I’m having these thoughts.”
He nodded and forced his lips into some semblance of a smile that he hoped looked supportive. He then returned his gaze to the bowl and the ice cream she’d retrieved.
“D’you want to share this with me?” he asked, gesturing to the bowl with a spoon.
Rose nodded. He scooped several large dollops of vanilla ice cream into the bowl then he went to his junk drawer. It overflowed with a random assortment of objects: scissors, several different types of batteries, notepads, pens, pencils, a ruler, a screwdriver, tape, glue, Band-Aids, rubber bands, paper clips, binder clips, thumbtacks, toothpicks, a ball of twine, a condom, a tampon, and so many other things James didn't remember throwing into the drawer.
He dug through the mishmash of objects until he found a small, half-empty box of birthday candles and a matchbook. He took out four candles and brought them and the matches over to where Rose stood at the counter.
“I would try to shove twenty-two of them into the cupcake, but firstly I don’t have twenty-two candles, and secondly, I’m pretty sure I would end up pulverizing the poor cupcake into a pile of crumbs. So use your imagination; two and two equates to twenty-two.”
He shoved two of the candles side by side into the left side of the cupcake, right before the H and B in “Happy Birthday”. The other two, he stuck into the right side of the cupcake, behind both Ys. Striking the match, he ignored the shaking in his hands as he lit the candles. He then promptly blew out the match and dropped it into the water-filled wine glass in the sink to let it stop smoking. However, Rose must have seen the tremor in his hands, because she reached over and threaded their fingers together.
“I don’t like fire,” he admitted. “For obvious reasons.”
“You didn’t have to light the candles then,” Rose said gently.
“Pfff. It’s your birthday. Can’t have a birthday without blowing out some candles. How else will you get a free wish?”
Rose cracked a small smile and squeezed his fingers. She leaned forward as though she were about to blow out her candles. James cried, “Wait!”
She pulled back with a start.
“It’s your twenty-second birthday. I would think you would remember how this goes by now,” he drawled. He then sucked in a deep breath and began to sing. “Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Ro-ooose. Happy Birthday to youuuuu.”
She was grinning by the end of it, especially when he intentionally sang off-key for the sole purpose of making her smile. He’d made her cry too much in the last twenty-four hours; a smile from her was a welcome sight.
“Right. Those candles are all charged up with birthday magic. Now you can make a wish and blow,” he said, bowing and gesturing to her cupcake.
Rolling her eyes at him, Rose closed her eyes and paused for about five seconds, before she blew out a short breath, extinguishing the candles with ease. He applauded her effort, then yanked the candles out of the cupcake and extended two of them to her. They licked off the cake crumbs and icing—cream cheese, he noted with delight—then dropped them into the trash.
“Let’s eat this before all the ice cream melts,” James said, gesturing to the table. “Want anything to drink? More wine?”
“Just water.”
He grabbed two glasses from the dishwasher and filled them with water from the pitcher in the fridge before plopping down at the table beside Rose. He noticed his phone had a new text notification; Jack had replied, letting him know he was home. James relayed the news to Rose, then gestured for her to take the first bite of her birthday cupcake.
For several long minutes, they sat silently together, trading off bites of cupcake and ice cream until the bowl was empty.
“That was very good,” he praised, swiping his finger through the melted mess of ice cream and chocolate crumbs on the bottom of the bowl and licking the digit clean.
“Thanks. Elsa loves to bake but doesn't get the chance to do it as often as she likes because she lives in the dorms on campus.” Rose ran her fingertip along the rim of her glass. “When I invited her over to my flat, she said stress baking was a requirement. She didn’t know it was my birthday until we started decorating the cupcakes.”
“Do you have an aversion to people knowing it’s your birthday?”
She snorted. “No. But it just… it didn’t feel right to celebrate. Not when we’d…” She trailed off with a shrug. “All month I’d been looking forward to finally telling you it was my birthday. It didn’t feel right to tell anyone about my birthday if I couldn’t tell you.”
“I really buggered your birthday,” he sighed, chest tightening.
“Nah.” She pursed her lips. “Okay, well, yeah. But it wasn’t just you. I didn’t help. I wasn’t in the mood to celebrate my birthday today, so I kept it to myself. Anyways. Elsa knocked a bit of sense into me this afternoon. Helped put some things into better perspective.”
“I’m glad you have a friend like that to share things with,” he said.
Rose hummed in agreement. “She also called me out for being an idiot.”
James snorted. “Jack did much the same for me.” He paused, fidgeting uncomfortably for a few seconds before he blurted, “I am so sorry, Rose. I’m so sorry for snooping through your mail and reading that letter, and I’m so sorry for jumping to a conclusion that was absolutely ridiculous, and I’m sorry for accusing you of not trusting me. I’m sorry I twisted the situation and your words and actions to put the blame all on you. I’m sorry I let my own insecurities warp my perceptions of you and our relationship, and I’m so, so sorry for ever insinuating that you would want to go back to Jimmy.”
Rose was dead silent. When James chanced a peek over at her, he was horrified to see tears welling in her eyes. She blinked and they fell down her cheeks.
Sniffling, she wiped at them and whispered, “That really hurt. I thought I had told you enough about Jimmy to show you he wasn’t a nice person to be in a relationship with. And I thought…”
“You did,” James interrupted fervently. “You did Rose. You were absolutely correct in saying I had selective memory. You told me more about him than I realized. I was too caught up in my own head last night to remember everything you’d said. I’m so sorry about that.”
Rose waved him off. “Forget Jimmy for a minute. Even if he wasn’t a wanker… It hurt that you would think I would be tempted into a new relationship with someone else when we’ve been so happy together. At least, I’ve been happy.”
“I’ve been happy, too,” James said. He covered her hand with his. “I swear, Rose. I’ve been so happy with you.”
He wished he had better answers for her. He wished he could explain what had triggered him last night, explain how his brain had disregarded nearly seven months of a friendship and four months of a relationship stronger than he’d ever had before. Why had he thought Rose would be tempted by an ex-boyfriend who had treated her so horribly? Why did he have the anxiety that Rose would see through his facade and realize he wasn’t as exciting as she’d thought? Why was he so fearful she would leave?
Because everyone leaves.
The realization crashed over him with the force of a tidal wave, pushing his head beneath the water until he could barely breathe. He was drowning, fighting a losing battle against the current, about to be swept away into the sea when he was thrown a lifeline.
Rose squeezed his fingers hard, grounding him, pulling him back to the moment. His chest was tight and tears blurred his vision.
Everyone leaves.
His mother, who had thought it more prudent to attend to their dogs rather than get herself to safety with her husband and son.
His father, who had rescued him from their burning house only to leave him on the street to go back inside. James hadn’t been enough to keep his dad by his side, and so he had lost two parents that night.
His aunt, who had never wanted kids, had never expected to have kids. She pulled long hours and travelled incessantly, chasing big news stories while James pretended he was fine with being alone, while silently wishing his dad had never saved him from their house. He knew without a doubt that, if his aunt could do it all over again, if she knew then what she knew now, she never would have agreed to be his godmother when he was born. He loved his aunt, and knew his aunt loved him, but he wasn’t so naïve as to be ignorant of the fact that he had upheaved his aunt’s life, and not entirely for the better.
The friends he had left behind in the UK and never heard from again after he and his aunt moved to America. People he had known since childhood who hadn’t bothered putting in the effort to stay in touch, despite claiming they would.
His previous partners, many of whom finding ways to end their brief relationship after realizing he didn’t want to have sex with them. Time after time, he had to listen to them say it was fine that they weren’t being physically intimate—with an unspoken yet dangling between them—only to listen to them make up excuses for why they were ending the relationship. Granted, he had broken off a relationship himself a few times, but over half the time, his partner had been the one to end it.
Over and over, people came and people went, and at the heart of it, James was hardly more than a spectre, unable to be seen or heard as his heart was left broken. And yet when Rose had joined him, had taken his hand and made promises and vows that nobody ever had before, he had jumped at the first opportunity to assume she would leave him, too.
Chair legs scraped across the floor a moment before a warm, familiar arm wrapped around his waist. He turned into Rose and rested his cheek on her shoulder, breathing in her scent, the subtle tones of amber and citrus, of warmth and love and home.
Something deep in his chest cracked open, releasing the floodgates. For the past nine and a half years, he had been drifting, trying to make sense of how he could feel so alone when he was surrounded by people, able to make new friends and acquaintances at the drop of a hat. Yet there was always that disconnect, making him feel more like an outsider looking in. Like everyone else was aware of the punchline of a joke while he was left clueless.
Until Rose. With Rose it had been natural. Effortless. It was though his world had shifted into perfect focus, and at the heart of it was her. She had reminded him of what it felt like to belong, to feel perfectly at home with another person. And though he was desperate not to lose her and what they had together, part of him was holding his breath, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Yet in doing so, he had let his anxiety take control and had hurt Rose badly enough that he had nearly caused her to do exactly what he had been terrified of.
James’s shoulders shook as he wept quietly into Rose’s neck, dampening the collar of her shirt. She didn’t seem to mind. Instead, she held him closer, rubbing her hand up and down the length of his spine as he sobbed and gasped for breath.
“I’m sorry,” he rasped. “I’m so sorry for everything, Rose.”
Haltingly, through the juddering tears that cracked his voice, he explained his revelation to her. He hoped he didn’t sound like he was making excuses for himself, but he genuinely wanted her to understand the conclusion his big, stupid brain had come to.
“I let my fears take over,” he said, voice raw from crying and talking. “I didn’t realize what they were. And I didn’t realize how loud they’d gotten.”
“I understand,” Rose said quietly. “Believe me. I understand. Is there anything I can do to help you quiet them?”
James rubbed his hand beneath his clogged, stuffy nose and grimaced when it came away wet. He pulled away from Rose and stood, moving to the sink to wash his hands, then to grab a handful of tissues. He blotted his eyes then blew his nose before he sank into his seat beside her again.
“I don’t know,” he confessed. “I know this is a me problem, not a you problem. You’ve been wonderful, Rose. You and me… our relationship… it has all been wonderful. I don’t know why I was so quick to let ten minutes of screaming insecurities make me forget about half a year of loving you.”
Rose chewed on the inside of her cheek, contemplating. “If ever there’s a time those voices are getting too loud, I’d like you to tell me. Though I know sometimes they can go unnoticed. But if you realize you’re getting stuck in your head, let me know and I’ll try to help you out of it.”
James flashed her a grateful smile. “Same for you. If there’s ever a time I can help you with whatever’s on your mind…”
Rose sighed. “I need to get better about that. I’ve realized I have a bad habit of telling myself I will deal with something later, but later never actually comes.” She sucked in a big breath and blew it out again. “I’m sorry you saw that letter from Jimmy. Yeah, you were a bit of a twat for reading it and reacting like you did. But I’m sorry you were blindsided like that, and that I ignored how it made you feel. And I’m sorry for making you feel like I don’t trust you. I’m sorry I made you self-conscious for everything you’ve shared with me and that you feel like I don’t share enough with you.” She let out a sad little laugh that twisted his heart. “This is going to sound lame, but I honestly didn’t realize I wasn’t being as open with you as I thought I was. It feels like you know me better than anyone ever has, so I didn’t think to change anything. But now that I know how you feel, I want to work to be better at that.”
James shook his head and covered her hand. “No, Rose. I got caught up in my own head and in my frustration. You’ve shared more with me than I wanted to admit last night.” Jack’s words clanged around in his head. “I shouldn’t have expected the exact same level of sharing from you as I am comfortable with giving.”
“That’s not fair. I am comfortable with you…”
James cringed. “No, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m not accusing you of anything, Rose. Merely stating a fact. I’m not trying to make you feel guilty or upset, I swear. I want you to be comfortable talking with me, and forcing you to talk about things you aren’t comfortable with is counterproductive.”
“Thing is, I was always going to tell you everything about Jimmy,” Rose sighed. “When he first texted me, it sent me into a blind panic and I sorta… shut down. I wanted to take the time I needed to get into a better place before sharing it with you. But I guess I didn’t realize how long it was since he first texted me.”
James stayed silent, letting her get her thoughts together. He twined their fingers together, happy to be able to sit and touch her like this, when for many long, heartbreaking hours in the wee hours of that morning, he had been sure that he would never be able to do so again. Her hand fit perfectly in his, and he knew that he would do whatever it took to make their relationship whole again, to make sure he could hold her hand for the rest of their lives.
When Rose began speaking, he gave her his full attention and tried to keep his emotions in check. He listened to her explain how Jimmy had texted her out of the blue, having gotten her number from a “mutual friend”.
“M’still not sure who gave it to him,” Rose said with a sigh. “He never told me and none of my friends claim to have done it.”
James listened to her describe the early conversations she’d had with Jimmy, from telling him that she needed time, to working through her anxiety with the help of Elsa and a counselor, to coming to the decision to let Jimmy say his piece.
“He was very important to me at one time. He was the love of my life. He was my everything. He will always be important and special because I genuinely loved him, and like it or not, my experiences with him shaped me into the person I am today. I don’t love him anymore, and frankly don’t miss him or want what we used to have, but if this would help him and me move on, I really wanted to let him say what he needed to say.
“He apologized to me, and it wasn’t even a terrible apology. Though he did make it sound like we both were at fault, but you know what, it was better than I was expecting, so I sorta took it as a win. I figured we were done, but then he wanted to know if he could repay me for all the debts he’d left me with. I can’t remember if I told you before, but he stopped paying his part of the rent at the end of our relationship. I got so behind on those payments because I had other bills to focus on that by the time I moved out, I was six months behind.
“I refused Jimmy’s offer. Told him everything was paid off and he didn’t owe me anything.” Rose sniffled and smiled ruefully, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “You know my money insecurities. I couldn’t stand the thought that he might use this as a way to control me again. So I shut him down.”
“Good for you,” James murmured, his first words in a while. “You don’t have to go on. It’s okay.”
But Rose shook her head. “I want you to know all of this. I want to come to you when—as Elsa puts it—shit ties up my brain. And my brain has been in knots for over a month. I want to be better with being okay about my thoughts sometimes getting tangled; I realized if I waited until my brain was calm to tell you everything, I would never tell you anything. I don’t want secrets between us, and I’m frustrated with myself that I unwittingly kept secrets from you. I can’t promise I will tell you immediately when something is on my mind, but I will make more of an effort to be more open with you. I wish I’d told you all of this sooner, but I can’t go back and change how I handled this, so let me tell you all of this now.”
James nodded and brought their clasped hands to his lips for a soft kiss.
“After I told Jimmy I didn’t want his money, I thought we were done. I didn’t hear from him for a few days, but then I got a text from him, a selfie with some of our old friends. A harmless group photo. Then he started sharing news from home. Or he would send me playlists. Stupid, innocent stuff we used to. He has really good taste in music and I’m always happy to have new songs or artists to listen to.
“We started chatting a little more regularly. Not daily, but a few times a week. A few messages at a time. He shared updates about his life, told me about going to drug and alcohol meetings, financial counseling, and so on. I told him about America and school. I didn’t tell him about you, though. It’s stupid, and I should have because I don’t think Jimmy realizes I’m not single, but you’re mine.” The word sent a thrill up James’s spine, and he couldn’t help but kiss her knuckles again. “You’re mine and I didn’t want to share you with him. I didn’t want anything of Jimmy to touch you. And I wasn’t trying to lead him on or anything. Or keep him a secret from you. But all of a sudden it’s been five weeks since he first texted.
“Then he sent me that letter. It came two days ago. I cried when I got it. I never gave him my address, so I panicked that he had somehow stalked me and found me, that he would be waiting at the university for me. And I was just… so defeated. I thought maybe he’d changed. Grown up or something. Stupidly, I thought maybe we could eventually be friends. But the only thing he wanted was for me to get back together with him.”
Rose’s tears dripped down her cheeks and her breathing hitched. James wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug. She willingly leaned into him and sniffled quietly for a long moment.
“Did you really think that was a love letter?” Rose croaked.
“Pardon?”
“What Jimmy wrote to me. Did you think it read like a love letter?”
James sucked on the inside of his lower lip. He tried to remember the content of the letter, but his memories were all tainted with the pain of their argument.
“I don’t remember enough of it,” he confessed. “I’m sorry.”
Rose lifted her bum off of her chair, reaching into her back pocket to pull out a piece of paper that had been folded into eighths.
“Here,” she said, giving it to him.
Tentatively, he took it. Rose pulled herself out of his embrace and grabbed a tissue from the crumpled pile he had brought over.
As he reread the letter, his stomach twisted into knots when he picked out several words and phrases.
I’ve found a piece of myself…
I’m not complete…
I hate the person I am without you…
…happiest of my life…
…nothing more I’ve wanted…
…(our life?)…
You make me feel like I can do anything…
I love how I feel when I’m with you…
I was scared about how much I needed you…
…something I always knew would be there for me…
I know I can make it work this time…
…enjoy your time there, while you can…
…we can work harder together to make us work…
I will do whatever it takes to make this work…
Over and over, James read the letter, his mind picking up more of the tone and the sheer selfishness in it. Everything Jimmy said was about him, about how he needed Rose, without giving a thought about whether Rose wanted or needed him. He plainly admitted to taking her for granted, and still, after all this time, he acted as though he and Rose were equally at fault for how their relationship had ended.
How must it have sounded to Rose, for him to go off on her about the letter?
“Oh, Rose,” James breathed, “I’m so sorry. God, I was a twat, wasn’t I?”
She let out a watery giggle. “Yeah, a bit.”
“Can I ask…? How did Jimmy find your address? I mean. Do you even know how he found it?”
Rose’s eyes welled with tears again, even as she scoffed. “My mum.”
“Your… mum?” That had not been what James had expected. “But… why?”
Rose shook her head. “Apparently Jimmy went ‘round the estate. Found my mum and told her we’d been chatting. Said he wanted to send me money to help cover the bills I’d paid. He said exactly the right thing—when I moved back home, my mum kept telling me over and over that Jimmy should cough up the money to cover his half of the flat and the expenses that had built up.
“A couple weeks ago, my mum asked me if I’d been chatting with Jimmy. When I said yes, I guess she assumed I knew Jimmy wanted to repay me but I was being unreasonable.” Rose’s face crumpled. “I know my mum didn’t know how badly Jimmy had treated me, and that's my fault for not telling her. But what if he’d been a murderous stalker? What if he’d physically or sexually abused me? What if he used that information and showed up alone at my flat one night and broke in and…?”
She coughed out a wracking sob and buried her face in her hands. James nearly began crying at the sight of her distress. “How dare my mum give out my address like that? I never thought she’d do something like that. My mum called to wish me a happy birthday and I told her a little bit about why you and I were fighting, and she told me she was the one who gave Jimmy my address. I got so angry with her, and she was gettin’ angry with me. I’ve spent the day crying ‘cos I was fighting with my two favorite people.”
James tossed the letter onto the table and wrapped his arms around Rose, holding her tightly to his chest. He had never been angrier with another person than he was right now with Jackie Tyler. Well. Jackie Tyler and Jimmy bloody Stone. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Rose. I’m sorry.”
“Joke’s on Mum, though; Jimmy didn’t send a single quid with that letter.” Rose sniffled and scrubbed her hands across her eyes. “I hate this. I wish I’d blocked Jimmy from the start, I wish I’d told you when he texted, I wish I’d told my mum not to talk to Jimmy. I wish I’d handled everything differently, and I wish I hadn’t gotten so upset with you last night. I’m sorry, James. I’m sorry for it all.”
James tightened his hold around her, burying his face into her neck while she wept into his. “You have every right to handle situations however you think is best. I should have had more faith and trust in you and in our relationship. I was unreasonable. But I forgive you, love. Of course I forgive you. I love you. I love you more than you can imagine, and I’m so sorry I doubted it last night.”
Rose began crying harder into his shoulder. Her breaths came out in harsh gasps as she managed to reply, “I love you too. I’m sorry for putting the doubt in your head… when you asked if I was breaking up with you and I said I didn’t know. God, I didn’t mean that. I didn’t mean it at all. I got scared too, same as you, and my brain sort of shut down because it couldn’t stop thinking of everything Jimmy had said or done in the past, and twisting it to look like what you were saying and doing. That’s something I need to work on because that’s insulting for me to imply that you’re anything like him, but I didn’t know what to do, so I pushed you out, and I’m so sorry.”
James merely held her tighter, his heart breaking at her agony, yet filling with more love for her than he’d ever felt before.
“You’re the strongest woman I know, Rose,” he murmured into her hair. “The strongest. You’ve overcome so much, and you’re working to make yourself the best version of yourself that you can be, and that’s so admirable. I am here to listen to anything you want to tell me, but I am okay with not knowing everything. I trust your judgement, and I know you’ll tell me what you want me to know.”
He continued speaking quietly, a combination of reassurances, affirmations, and words of love. She shed more tears than he’d ever seen her shed, and he shed just as many. He was exhausted and overwhelmed, and he wanted nothing more than to sleep for a very long time tangled with Rose.
When her tears finally dried, he pressed a lingering kiss to the side of her head before sitting back in his chair. He grabbed a tissue for himself and passed one to her; they noisily blew their noses and wiped their eyes.
“Well. Wasn’t that cathartic?” he said cheerfully, holding his hand out for her tissue to throw in the rubbish bin.
She chuckled. Though her eyes were red and puffy and her cheeks were splotchy, he didn’t think there was a more beautiful person in the world than her.
He washed his hands after throwing away their used tissues, then he grabbed a few more, just in case. His nose was still a bit runny, and he was sure Rose’s had to be too. He plopped into his chair with a groan.
“First fight,” he mused. “Can tick that one off the list, I suppose.”
“Was it everything you expected it to be?” she drawled, rolling her eyes.
“Admittedly it was a lot more painful than I thought,” he said. “But now we can go back to how we were, right?”
Rose paused. In the silence, his heart sank into his stomach.
“I don’t know if we should,” she said carefully, and his lungs were suddenly out of air. Her eyes widened. “No, not like you’re thinking. It’s just… everything we fought about, everything we talked about, it changed us. It changed our relationship. Not in a bad way, but it’s different now. We’re more aware of some things that we weren’t before. I don’t want to go backwards with you. I want us to go forward. Together.”
James nodded, shoulders slumping in relief. He slid his hand across the table, slipping it beneath Rose’s so her palm rested against the back of his hand. He splayed his fingers, letting hers fall between the gaps. She curled her fingers around his hand.
“You’re right,” he said, caressing his thumb along the side of her pinkie. “Absolutely, you’re right. Guess this means the honeymoon period is over?”
“Probably.” She flashed him a cheeky grin. “Hopefully we’re not over the horny hump though.”
“You’re never gonna let me forget that I said that, are you?” he whined, grimacing.
“Nope,” she said, popping the ‘p’ as he often did. “It was such a dorky thing to call it.”
He pouted. “You never complained about my dorkiness before.”
“I love your dorkiness. Doesn’t mean I won’t tease you about it though.” Her smile slipped until her face turned solemn. “I’m really glad we talked this out, James.”
He squeezed her fingers. “Me too.”
“Any time Jimmy and I had an argument, we never did this. We’d shout at each other, curse at each other, and then ignore each other and not speak for a day or so. Then we’d have angry make up sex and pretend everything was fine in the morning. I don’t want to ever do that again. I want to communicate with you and to compromise with you, then grow with you.
“Staying in love is a choice, and it takes work. It shouldn’t be hard, but it’s not easy either. We need to choose to stay in love, decide that our relationship is worth making an effort for. I want to wake up every day and choose you, to choose us, and I want to put in the work because I wanna enjoy the payoff. Because being in love with you, James… it’s the best I’ve ever felt. You make me feel like I can do anything, like pass a stupid chemistry class or tell my stupid ex-boyfriend to fuck off. I love the way you make me feel. I love feeling like I’m home whenever I’m with you. And though this home we’re building with each other might have a leaky roof every now and then, I wanna fix it with you.”
James’s eyes were burning again. How was anything even left in his tear ducts? “Oh, Rose. You make me feel the same way. And I feel so inadequate because you just waxed romantic poetry at me, but my brain has stopped working. But please know I love you with every cell in my body, and I want to keep loving you with every cell, all the way down to each little organelle contained within, every day for the rest of our long and beautiful life together.”
Rose grinned at him and leaned over to press a light kiss to his lips. They tingled at the contact, and he wanted to pull her close to kiss her again.
“You’re such a science geek,” she said.
“Well. I’ve already shown you I’m rather fabulous with many types of chemistry and anatomy,” he drawled, flashing her an over-the-top wink as he clicked his tongue lewdly.
She burst into a fit of laughter that he echoed, feeling at peace for the first time in twenty-four hours. The exhaustion of all those hours suddenly overwhelmed him. His laughter morphed into a yawn, which spread to Rose.
“I’m knackered,” he announced unnecessarily. “Will you come to bed with me? My bedroom’s a disaster, but the guest bed is made.”
Rose nodded and stood up from the kitchen table. She took their bowl to the sink and rinsed it out before leaving it there for them to clean properly in the morning. She then flicked off the light on top of the stove before she followed him through the rest of the house, locking up and turning lights off as they went.
“Can I see what you’ve done to your room?” Rose asked.
“Sure,” he said, continuing down the hall rather than peeling off into the guest room. When he got to his closed door, he warned, “It’s a mess.”
They were hit with the stench of paint fumes as soon as he opened the bedroom door. He flicked on the light, and the room was bathed in the yellow glow of his lamps.
“Love the color,” Rose said.
“Yeah?” he asked, pleased with himself that, even in his miserable, depressive state of trying to not think about Rose, he had managed to pick a color she would like.
“Mhm.”
“I have to put on the second coat. I’ll probably do that tomorrow—I’m not really feeling like going to my classes, so I’ll probably ditch ‘em again.”
“You rebel,” she teased. “If you want some help, I don’t have anything important going on tomorrow. And I don’t work this weekend. We can take a few days to finish up the painting and reorganize your furniture.”
James smiled. “I’d like that.”
“It’s a date.” She wrapped her arm around his waist and tucked her face against his shoulder. “Besides, it’ll go faster with two.”
Leaning down, James brushed a kiss to her crown then rested his cheek in her hair. “Faster with two. Better with two.” He gave her waist a tight squeeze as he kissed her again. “Better with you.”

As cute as she looks, it is odd how casual Penny's Ball outfit looks, especially when compared to the others. I feel she's usually the more dressed up one. I've heard from multiple people she looks like Rapunzel on Valentine's Day and a top reddit comment says she looks like summer Elsa at Festival Fun. VDB sounds absolutely like the kind of occasion Penny would break out the most over-the-top flowery and frilly dress. (My first thought was Cinderella-esque, probably because it's a dance)
I suppose I don’t really mind, because we’ve seen her go over the top before, with the Celestial Ball and the First Valentines Day, and arguably the First Date quest. We’ve also seen her go more casual, like during the Festival Quest and her Year 7 regular outfit. I feel like Penny is probably an example of the meme, “Get yourself a girl who can do both” complete with the two vastly different looks. In any case, I also don’t mind if Penny’s design is a bit more subdued compared to the others. Gives them a chance to shine more, gives Penny the chance to try new styles - and hey, she’s still one of the only characters, or perhaps the only character, to be getting different hairstyles these days. I guess when I think about it, she’s already done “Cinderella” style dress-ups before. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference and it’s subjective, but I know what you mean. In general, I just like the simple look because the Fawley kids tend to go more simple. Plus, I always like to put on that little heart sticker for makeup on the dating quests, at least for Luca. So it matches! Not as obvious a match as some of the boys’ clothes matching the flowery pattern on the garden dress, but it’s something.

Prompt 3: Relaxing in the Intense Sun
Chapter Four
It was noon when Elsa came back from Ahtohallan, to do a brief check on the glacier. The place, of course, was still as hostile and as empty as the last time she was there. And since she had nothing else to do, the Fifth Spirit decided to ride back to the village. She was expecting Hans to be inside her hut or in the stables with Sitron, but when she arrived, she was surprised to find her hut empty.
"Hans is out with Bruni. I think he went to the river bank." Honeymaren told her, and after muttering a quick thank you, she took off.
Arriving in her favourite spot, Elsa saw no sign of the Admiral. That was until she heard a familiar laughter. Turning her head, she caught a glimpse of a tall man standing next to a big rock on the riverside, a little farther from her spot. Under the intense sun, his auburn hair gave her the impression that his head was on fire.
"Oh yes, yes, Elsa is definitely gonna like that."
When her name was mentioned, the blonde tilted her head in curiosity. Who is he talking to? Silently, Elsa took a few steps forward and hid behind a tree. Once she was sure that she remained unnoticed, Elsa took a peek.
Hans exhaled, still standing with his back facing her direction. "Sometimes, I feel like I'm dreaming." He paused, before turning to face the river, causing Elsa to quickly hide. "I've done bad things before. I was causing her pain. And yet, she's still giving me a second chance." He sighed. "She is too good to be true."
A smile formed on her face, as Elsa stood there, leaning against the tree.
"I love her." He confessed. "So very much. I'd never known love until I knew her. And I'm grateful to have her in my life." Chuckling, Hans then added. "Elsa was right, you really are a good listener. Thanks buddy."
Smiling, Elsa braved herself to take another peek at the Admiral. He was still there, with a salamander nesting on the top of his auburn head. He was grinning, probably because of the fire spirit's antics.
"The weather is nice, don't you think? Maybe I can try to relax as I wait for Elsa. Do you think it's a good idea?" Hans looked up slightly, asking for Bruni's approval. When the creature squeaked, the former prince beamed. "Of course it is."
Elsa wondered if it was time for her to come out of her hiding, but what he did next refrained her from doing so.
Bruni hopped off as Hans unbuckled his boots. Once the leather pair was settled on the grass ground, he began to undo his dark blue waistcoat and let the material hit the ground just beside his boots. His cotton shirt came off next, and as it was carelessly thrown towards his pile of clothing, the blonde found herself digging her nails into the wooden branch she held onto. Her blue eyes widened as his bare muscular back came to the view. Indeed, it was nothing she hadn't seen, for they had spent some nights together. Elsa knew she shouldn't sneakily spy on someone, but she couldn't help it, she was curious. At least, that was her defence.
And yet, a certain spirit decided to ruin her fun.
"Nokk!" She gasped once she noticed the water spirit standing on the river right beside her. "What are you doing?"
But the horse kept nodding at Hans' direction, as if trying to tell her to go to him. Upon the gesture, Elsa shook her head. She swore she saw the Nokk smirked, before the creature trotted away.
"Nokk, come back!" In a slight panic, the blonde yelped and reached out towards the spirit, revealing herself in the process.
She stumbled along the way, only to see the Nokk dived into the water. Her little commotion did catch the Admiral's attention. From his seat on the big rock, with his feet dangling over the edge, Hans watched her in shock.
"Oh, Elsa!" He greeted, raising an eyebrow. "Have you been there long?"
Oh, dear. She thought. There is no turning back now. She had been played by the sneaky water horse—yes, she would gladly use that term for now—and she got caught. Her face grew hotter, as she got back on to her feet, and Elsa swore it wasn't the heat.
Biting her lower lip nervously, she approached him. "Um, no?" Deep down, she wanted to slap herself in the face for sounding unsure.
Hans seemed to understand. Then again, her flushing cheeks proved that she was just caught red handed doing whatever it was. Had she been watching him? Strangely, he found her adorable.
"Come!" Hans patted a spot beside him on the rock. "The weather is too nice to be missed."
She smiled sheepishly. "Nah, I'm fine."
He rolled his eyes. "We can sit here for a few minutes, then we can go back to the village."
"But it's too sunny!" Elsa didn't want to sound whiny, but this kind weather was never a good friend of hers.
"It's not too sunny, it's perfect." Sighing, the Admiral decided to hop off the stone, and walked over. "Besides, you can use a bit relaxation."
He grabbed her shoulders, and Elsa tried to focus her gaze on his eyes, instead of the sweat that slowly trailed down his chest. Did he really mean that she could relax under this intense sun? He must be crazy. Then again, this was Hans, and he would come up with the craziest idea if he wanted to just because he loved crazy. But those eyes, could she really resist them?
"Fine." She finally caved in, ignoring the grin on his face.
Hans took her hand and led them both towards the giant rock. He helped her up, before settling down next to her. For a while, the two of them were sitting in silence. Nature engulfed them with serenity, and Elsa found herself thinking in the midst of it. The way Hans talked about her, his confession, she couldn't just brush it off like it was nothing. The sincerity in his words, Elsa could sense it, and flames burned inside her upon the thought.
"Penny for your thoughts?"
Realising that they hadn't said anything ever since she agreed to his plan, Elsa quickly recovered from her daydream.
"Nothing that would interest you." A lie. But she couldn't just tell him she had been watching him from afar, before she was tricked by the Nokk. "I see that you're bonding with Bruni."
The tiny blue salamander crawled onto her lap, looking up at her with its tongue out. Knowing what the creature needed, Elsa waved her hand and made a snowflake rain above it, in which Bruni excitedly breamed. in response.
"Adorable creature, that little one is." Hans commented, as he stared at the blue salamander. "But also deadly. Sitron doesn't like Bruni, I think. For some reason, it scared him."
Elsa let out a chuckle, letting Bruni hop on to her open palm. "I agree." She gently stroked it's small head, and the salamander squeaked.
As the minute passed, the hotter the air got. Elsa felt like she would melt any second now, yet she resisted the urge to conjure a small cloud to help them cool off. No, that would ruin what Hans referred to as the perfect weather.
"Alright, I think that's enough sun for me." Elsa smiled, as the fire spirit crawled up to her shoulder.
But when she moved to climb down, a hand stopped her. "Wait, where are you going?" His eyebrows knitted, and his free hand moved to wipe the sweat off his forehead, a gesture her own hand wanted to mirror.
"Hans, you mean well, but I can't really stand the heat." Elsa reassured. "I'm gonna sit over there under the shade to cool off, and you may stay here."
The former prince frowned slightly, his shoulders slumped. Gazing into the water, he noticed a pair of eyes observing him. An idea popped into his head, and it was too good to miss. Looking up, he flashed her a smile.
"You said you need to cool off, right?"
Elsa narrowed her eyes as she eyed him with suspicion. "Uh, yes?"
The next thing she knew, Elsa was surrounded by the cold water. The river wasn't that deep, and she quickly swam. Once she came out of the water, she glared at the Admiral who was still seated on the rock.
"What was that for?" She scoffed.
Hans smirked. "Revenge is sweet, Kaere."
But her frown only got deeper. "Fine then." Turning to the water surrounding her, Elsa caught a pair of glowing eyes, and smirked. "Nokk, get him."
The blonde noticed how the look on his face changed, and with a splash, Hans finally joined her in.

Boston Boys [Part Three]
Summary: After returning home from visiting family, Elsa becomes the victim of a bank robbery and kidnapping.   Pairing: Chris Evans x OFC, John Krasinski x OFC Word Count: 2420 Chapter Warnings: language, bank robbery, kidnapping, guns. Square Filled: The entire series (bits and pieces of it) will fill my Crossover square for @marvelfluffbingo. A/N: This story contains a character who lost her hearing as she got older. I do work closely and regularly with the D/deaf community (I’m a sign language interpreter), but my own hearing problems do not involve significant hearing loss. It is not my intention to offend anyone, only to bring in a character with a quality I don’t see often in other fics. If you have questions about her, feel free to ask :)
Boston Boys Masterlist
The front door of the Manhattan penthouse opened; Elsa groaned and put a rush on finishing her makeup. Though it was her first night home in a while, she had hoped that she could avoid seeing her mother until breakfast the next day at the earliest. The staccato beat of heels clicking against the wood floor of the common parts of the place told Elsa she wasn’t going to be so lucky.
“I thought you weren’t coming in until tomorrow,” Margaret commented, inviting herself into Elsa’s room and kissing her daughter on the cheek.
Elsa scowled and wiped away the lipstick on her face. She touched up the foundation and powder there, then went back to choosing a lip color.
“I wasn’t expecting to,” Elsa lied, “but Brie and Ben are having a dinner get-together, so I thought I’d come into the city early. I’ll probably catch up with Brie afterwards.”
Margaret sighed as she inspected her newly-manicured nails. “Maybe she can talk you into coming home for good.”
Elsa dropped a lip gloss into her clutch and stood from the makeup table. “Let it go, Mother. I like Boston. I like the university, I like working at the bank. Why is it so horrible that in my mid-twenties --”
“Late twenties,” Margaret interrupted.
“Why is it so horrible that no matter my age, I want something different than what you thought my life was going to be? I appreciate every single thing that you and Dad have done for me. I appreciate every penny that you have poured and do pour into my education. Do I think it’s fair that you let Alexis and Daniel do whatever they wanted after undergrad and paid for it because they stayed in the city, but because I wanted out, I have to pay my own way outside of school? Absolutely not.” She sighed. “I’m not getting anywhere. My point is, Mother, that I’m happy. I like figuring life out for myself. Yeah, it’s rough sometimes, but I’m getting there. And I like it.”
Margaret shook her head. “You’ve had so many opportunities afforded to you, Elsa. I only wish you could see the potential in yourself that your father and I see in you.”
As her mother walked away, Elsa said nothing. This wasn’t the first time Margaret had deemed her daughter a disappointment, and Elsa was certain it wouldn’t be the last. Deciding not to dwell on it for the moment, she finished what she needed to do to be ready to meet her friends.
Tumblr media
The dinner party was pleasant enough. Elsa was able to catch up with several friends she hadn’t seen in several months. She always enjoyed the time with the people she had grown up with, but the longer she was away, the more distant she felt from most of them. Only Ben and Brie seemed grounded enough from the posh New York lifestyle they had all grown up with to make Elsa feel like she was still part of the circle.
She was deep in thought over this while she helped Brie clean up. She was loading the dishwasher, but had been rinsing the same plate for a few minutes now.
Ben shooed her away. “You’re not really thinking about dishes, Els. You and Brie get a glass of wine and go talk. I’ve got this.”
Elsa gave him a grateful smile. She poured two glasses of wine, then went to find Brie putting the dining room back into its normal arrangement.
“Your husband said he’s got the rest, that we should talk.”
Brie smiled and accepted the glass of wine, then followed Elsa out to the balcony. Brie handed her a cigarette, put one between her own lips, then lit both of them. Smoke rolled from Elsa’s lips, followed by a sip of wine. She followed that pattern for a couple of minutes; smoke out, wine in.
“So, how’s Beantown? Really, I mean,” Brie asked. “Nevermind everything you told everyone else. Be real with me.”
“I’m always real with you,” Elsa chuckled. “Boston really is great. I love it there. The university is amazing. I actually like my job at the bank. I mean -- it’s not makeup and YouTube, but it gets me by.”
Brie laughed. “Shut up. I love what I do.”
“I know you do. You have a real passion for it. The thing is, I love what I’m doing. My passion is history and film, and I’m putting those together. The bank is getting me by, and I do like working there. I just … Margaret can’t keep her thoughts to herself, and it gets me thinking.”
“Oh, please,” Brie sighed, rolling her eyes, “please tell me your mother isn’t on her ‘you’re not living up to your potential’ bullshit again. Do you know how many people we just had dinner with who would kill to be in your position? To be out from under their parents, to be living their own lives? But they’re too scared to be without the money. They don’t have that potential, Elsa. You do.”
Elsa smiled at her friend. “Thanks, Brie. That helps.”
“Good. Now, let’s get down to the really important information.”
“Oh yeah, what’s that?”
“Are you getting laid?”
Elsa laughed so hard, her wine spilled over onto her pants. She ran inside for some paper towels to mop it up, then was back out on the balcony, motioning for Brie to give her another cigarette. Once it was lit and she was back to her smoke and wine pattern, she sat back in the chair and shook her head.
“Not getting laid. Honestly, I don’t think about it that much. I’m focusing on school and work, you know? That keeps me busy enough.”
Brie shook her head. “All those beautiful Boston boys, and you’re not even taking advantage. I bet there’s a long line of them who would show up if they knew where you really came from.”
Elsa only shook her head. She had gone on dates with some guys from school, but nothing ever came from those outings -- and she was okay with that. She had other things to concentrate on.
After a bottle and a half of wine gone between the two of them, Elsa decided it was better to crash in the guest bedroom when they were ready to wind down. She’d hear it from her mother in the morning, but knowing her father would be there, laughing behind his daily Wall Street Journal print-outs made it all worth it.
Tumblr media
The morning of the bank robbery, Elsa woke up before her alarm. She had slept better than she had in a while, being back in her own place in Boston. It used to be the reverse; she slept better in New York than anywhere else. Somewhere along the way, she guessed, Boston had become home.
She took the extra time to have breakfast, a cup of coffee, and take her time getting ready. She had been away from the bank for a week, and she wondered if the day would drag or go quickly back in her normal routine. She didn’t mind either way, she decided, since she was back to classes in the late afternoon as well.
When the masked, hooded group came into the bank, Elsa’s calm came to a screeching halt. There was yelling and screaming and crying -- so much was happening at once, but Elsa was stuck in her spot. All she could think about were the guns in their hands and the fact that it was her day with the code for the safe.
“Elsa! Elsa has the code!”
The words brought her back to the present as one of the men came towards her. He climbed over the counter; Elsa backed away from him, out of instinct.
“Are you Elsa?”
Fearing the words would be her last, she closed her eyes and nodded. “Yes.”
The man gestured towards the safe with his gun. “Open it, Elsa.”
Before she could think to stop her emotions, tears were flowing from her eyes. She kept the rest of her demeanor as calm as possible, and her brain raced to remember the code that had been in her email that morning. The numbers jumbled in her head and her fingers shook as she tried to make the keypad complete its intended function.
“C’mon! Open it!”
Another man in the group yelled from behind her, causing her to startle. Her tears rolled thicker and faster down her cheeks; the man standing with her put his hand over hers.
“You know the code,” he encouraged quietly. “We aren’t gonna hurt you, okay? We’re here for the money, not for any of you. Take a deep breath, try it again.”
Elsa closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath through her nose, then let it out through her mouth. She took her time, but didn’t linger. Finally, the numbers made sense and her fingers worked. The safe beeped three times, and the heavy door unlocked.
“Good girl,” the man commented before moving her aside. Elsa retreated to sit where the other tellers were huddled together as two of the men raced into the safe.
Maybe she would make it out of this alive. They were getting what they wanted, she had cooperated like they asked. They could take what they wanted and leave, and Elsa could forget this ever happened.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck!”
A feminine voice cursed from the back room, and a fourth member of the group came racing towards the front. That person looked at the man who had overpowered the guard, gave a hand gesture, then turned to the group of tellers on the floor. Elsa locked eyes with the woman, and fear gripped her all over again. The woman gripped Elsa’s arm and tugged her up from the floor.
“You’re coming with us.”
Elsa struggled, but that only got her thrown in the back of a van and hit about the face. She could feel blood coming from near her hairline, but still all she could do was stay quiet and try not to show too much emotion.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
Suddenly, the man who had told her to open the safe was between the two of them. The woman was accusing her of activating an alarm. The argument continued, but Elsa’s ears were ringing and she felt as though she might pass out.
The van sped away, bringing Elsa back again. Her hands were secured behind her back, and she was blindfolded and gagged. Elsa was aware of someone sitting next to her, but she was too afraid to move or ask questions.
She figured it was roughly twenty minutes before they stopped and someone helped her out of the van. The woman warned that they knew where her family lived, where she lived, and that if she talked to the police, there would be hell to pay.
Someone sat her down on the curb, and the now familiar voice of the man who had been at the safe with her directed her to sing her favorite song to herself before removing the blindfold. Elsa sang it twice before being sure they were gone. She nudged the bandanas away from her eyes and mouth with her shoulders before getting up from the curb and screaming for help.
Tumblr media
The hospital was buzzing anyway, but being surrounded by police and medics only made Elsa more anxious. Too many people were coming and going, making it difficult for her to keep track of all of everyone. In her mind, if she didn’t know who was who, it was simply too easy for one of the robbers to come into the room and finish her off.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I know there’s a lot going on here, but Ms. Chapman needs some quiet, and I need the same to examine her. If you’ll excuse us, please.”
Elsa’s eyes met those of the young doctor waiting at the curtain for the room to clear. A nurse stayed behind, but Elsa already felt less tense with the three of them left in the room alone.
“Thank you for that,” she commented quietly.
“You’re welcome,” the doctor smiled, pulling on a pair of nitrile gloves. “I’m Dr. Juneau, this is my nurse, Elizabeth. Besides your head, can you tell me if you have any other injuries, Ms. Chapman?”
“Please, call me Elsa,” she began, “and no, I don’t think I’m hurt anywhere else.”
Dr. Juneau nodded. “To be on the safe side, if it’s all right with you, Elizabeth and I will help you into a gown, and we’ll do a full work up. Is that okay?”
Elsa agreed to change out of her clothes. Elizabeth put them in a bag, but Elsa had a feeling as soon as she got home, she’d strip out of those clothes and throw them away. Surely, she’d never wear that outfit again.
“All right, we’ve got this cut near your hairline -- should be easy to stitch up. We’ll get a plastics guy in here, make sure there’s little to no visible scarring. What’s your pain level?”
The exam was thorough, and went on for the next fifteen or twenty minutes, at least. Elsa was taken to imaging for x-rays and a CT scan, and when she returned to her room, Dr. Juneau was there with another doctor.
“This is Dr. Mackey,” she introduced. “He’ll take care of that cut on your head. You’ve got a concussion, as well, so I want you to take the rest of the week to rest. Really try to be as relaxed as you can. I know that won’t be easy, considering.”
“Thank you, Doctor.”
Elsa expected that Dr. Juneau would leave Dr. Mackey to it, but instead, she stayed at Elsa’s bedside, ready to hold her hand or talk her through the process, whatever Elsa needed.
“Dr. Juneau --”
“You can call me Aurelie.”
“Really, you don’t have to stay. I appreciate it and all, but I’m sure you’ve got other patients.”
Aurelie cleared her throat. “That’s true, but they’re all fine, for the moment. You told us you have no one in the area we can call, and since you won’t let us call your family …”
Tears welled in her eyes, certainly not for the first time that day. This time though, Elsa cried happily for the return of some semblance of the calm feeling she had when she had woken before her alarm that morning.

Boston Boys [Part Three]
Summary: After returning home from visiting family, Elsa becomes the victim of a bank robbery and kidnapping.   Pairing: Chris Evans x OFC, John Krasinski x OFC Word Count: 2420 Chapter Warnings: language, bank robbery, kidnapping, guns.

Phoenix train ride
Phoenix didn’t know what happened after that night Miami and why Hali ghosted on him but Phoenix was more than determined to win her over again as he laced up his fancy shoes and threw his hat on backwards knowing he was a stunner. As he walked through platform 9 and 3 quarters he caught Hali’s scent instantly. For weeks he’d been trying to run into her, in diagon alley, even around her house, but now was his chance. He left Ellie and Elliot behind with his stuff and walked through the crowd of people to find Hali.
“Phoenix!” Ellie called after him following slowly behind him with her things “I’m not getting your rubbish!” She turned to Elliot who groaned at the sight of more bags and left him there to follow Phoenix.
Phoenix pushed and shoved and made his way to the back of the train to where Hali was and smiled. She looked more beautiful than ever already in her RavenClaw clothes, curls flowing delicately in the wind, Phoenix was so dazed he didn’t even anticipate someone jumping onto his back.
“Max!!!!” Hudson called out at the sight of Phoenix and tackled him to the ground. He laughed as he wrestled him a bit only to notice he was not feeling it. He got up and handed him his hand “dude” He chuckled and watched Phoenix put on his hat angrily “take it easy man.-oh thanks sweet heart” he said to a girl who handed Hudson back his phone then showed Phoenix the video of him tackling him proudly.
Phoenix pushed his phone away “get that out of my face. I’m not in the mood for tik toks right now bro.” He said sternly to Hudson who backed away playfully. He looked at hali who was staring at him in a way that made him unconfident, then he saw Diego at her side and he clenched his fist as he looked at Hudson. “Come on let’s get a seat”
Hudson was Phoenix’s best most toxic friend, and Hudson loved the dragon boy, he was a badass, then he saw the way he was acting around Hali Scamander and thought it was a little pathetic. “Dude, this puppy dog shit is not a look.” He said to Phoenix as they entered the train “want my advice?” Phoenix peered back at Hudson and entered a room “alright shoot” he said humoring him. Hudson rubbed his hands together “it’s simple, if you want to rail Hali Scamander you walk in there give her your dragon eyes and say “listen bitch we are about fuck” and take her hand and do it.” Hudson shrugged “this whole making her feel special because she makes your dragon soul feel complete is super lame dude”
Phoenix covered his face as Hudson spoke, instantly regretting telling him anything about how Dragon Hali made his Dragon feel “Jesus Christ man” he said with a sigh as he removed his hands from his face “you’re a fucking idiot.” Phoenix got up about ready to leave just as Ellie came in shoving her things inside
Ellie was out breath as she pushed her crates inside the room “hey huddy, be a doll and put those up for me.”
Hudson smiled at the sight of Elsa Max “of course.” He said as he began grabbing her things for her, just then a small gust of wind enetered the car “never mind that, I got it love” aflyn scamander beamed to her, the corner of Hudson’s lips narrowed as he stepped away watching Aflyn take the spotlight once more by jumping into the seat and securing Elsas bags like he’s some kind of Spider-Man.
Phoenix stood up “what are you doing dude? Your messing up the seats, get out here.” He said attempting to pull him down. Just then Hali entered the car “guess I’ll sit with you Af” she began in a sweet tone, Phoenix was instantly mesmerized as he leaned against Aflyns leg hanging on Hali’s every word. “Tori doesn’t want to sit with dragons” Phoenix perked up and slapped Aflyns butt cheeks. “You can sit right here buddy.” He got up and grabbed Hali’s tote, smiling at her sweetly as they came face to face “hi” he said taking her things and putting them inside. Once her things were strapped in he pushed huddy aside and presented the entire left side to her. “Here you go”
Aflyn debated on slapping Phoenix but was caught off guard by the butt slap and buddy comment as he returned his feet to the floor of the train.
Ellie huffed as aflyn entered the room. Usually his chivalry and sexy smile could get her going like a rabbit on Easter but ever since Phoenix dropped the girlfriend bomb on her, she found most of Aflyn’s actions very irritating. She rolled her eyes as he jumped up on the seats, clearly flexing, as he put her bags away. Ellie was just about to say something whenever Phoenix beat her to it, and Ellie nodded in agreement. Then Hali entered and she knew she was stuck here. Ellie bit her lip as she plopped down in her seat staring rather sadly at Aflyn as he finally met her gaze.
Aflyn’s eyebrows curled up slightly with concern as his gaze connected with Elsa’s. She seemed upset, so he moved to sit down next to her, “Is everything alright?”
Ellie glared at him, “Don’t worry about me. Why don’t you worry about your girlfriend?”
Nervously biting her lip as she walked in, Hali couldn’t help producing a slight smile at Phoenix’s behavior. She walked up to the window saying “Thank you” to him as she passed.
Phoenix took a seat next to her, rubbing his arms like he was cold, but beaming toward her nonetheless. He then pulled out a tray of sushi, “This is the best sushi from Japan, super authentic. You like sushi right?”
She chuckled lightly, taking the tray from him, “I actually love sushi.” Her head lifted from the tray as she became intrigued by Aflyn and Ellie’s new behavior. Phoenix was also paying attention to them, before a loud and mocking snort escaped him after Ellie’s comment.
Hali looked to him with a shocked expression, and Phoenix shook his head with a smile, “Sorry, sorry.”
Aflyn shifted uncomfortably, “Ellie, I-“
“Oh, speak of the devil!” Ellie announced as she cut him off.
AJs voice drifted into the car mid-sentence, “...not going to continue that. Do your job, and I’ll do mine.”
Trey, one of the known jocks from gryffindor, replied, “Are you seriously going into that car with Scamander.. and Max? Just make yourself useful in there if you’re going to be wasting time with them.”
“Oh, like my time wouldn’t be wasted hanging out with the likes of you?” She sneered, “Get out of my way.”
Aflyn stood and walked towards the door once he heard Trey. He hated the guy almost as much as Phoenix. AJ shoved past Trey the moment Aflyn opened the door, and the two left shared a glare. Aflyn smirked, “Desperate are you?” Then closed the door with a wave of his finger.
Trey scoffed, and stormed off towards the end of the train, walking into Hudson’s car.
Aflyn offered to take AJs luggage, and put it away on the racks, returning to his original seat where Ellie and AJ now sat on either side.
AJ placed a hand on Aflyn’s shoulder and pulled him in closer to her to examine it curiously, “I saw you get struck here,” she tugged down on his shirt to trace her finger on his scar, “I thought dragons died if their wings were hit.”
He grasped her hand in his and brought it down from his shoulder, “Wtet
Phoenix eyed aflyn mockingly “you have a type” he mouthed to him in a little snicker, just then the usually quiet asain guy entered the car “sorry this seat is taken” Phoenix said instantly but the Ravenclaw boy just nodded “okay, are you um, doing still doing your annual party thing?” He asked timidly and Phoenix’s expression quickly changed “of course! That’s why it’s annual!” he said with a nervous laugh, really he only had it half prepared as Hali now occupied his mind. “And it will be an absolute banger with our new Headmaster starting this year” he grinned somewhat sinisterly “everyone is invited” the quiet Asian guy smiled “sick!” He said walking towards the back of the train. Phoenix looked at Hali, “you think your brother will DJ for us?”
Phoenix entered Callan’s car “hey” he began and Tori stood up “no! If you’re here, I’m out” Diego stood too “me too!” Phoenix rolled his eyes “relax, I don’t plan on staying. I just want to talk to Callan right quick.”
Callans eyebrows furrowed in confusion “me?”
Phoneix gave him a look like ‘seriously?’ “Yes, only one of you is named Callan. Pretty sure in the entire school. So” he motioned outside “Come on I don’t want to scare your wolf pack.” He said wiggling his fingers around spookily, and Tori shot him a glare, suddenly Penny started hyperventilating and that’s when Phoenix grabbed Callans hand and teleported them to the top of the train.
Callan looked around astonished “woah that was surprisingly wayy easier than floo powder”
Phoenix beamed “yeah I’m pretty good at it, Oppeee” Phoenix noticed Callans jacket sleeve smoking and quickly extinguished the flame by patting the fabric roughly “sorry about that.”
Callan sat up suddenly “wait I gotta go help with Penny!”
Phoenix pushed him back down as the train started blowing its whistle “fuck we get it! All a fucking board. Fuck. Blow my ear drums out.” Phoenix shook his frustrations out of him before facing Callan once more. “Let Josh handle it-“ Phoenix titled his head “are you high?”
Callan swallowed “maybe..”
Phoenix clapped his hands and laughed “you hufflepuff’s are all the same. You know you’re alright Callan” He said pulling out a joint as the train started moving “I have a huge favor to ask you”
The train started moving and Callan took the joint as Phoenix snapped his fingers to produce the flame which Callan used to ignite the paper. He inhaled slowly, taking the nerves away. “I have bad anxiety” he admitted before coughing slightly and passing the joint back to Phoenix.
“Cuz of Blake?” Phoenix nodded as he blew out the smoke slowly, making it glow blue and dance around into figures of literal clouds.
Callan looked at his smoke with awe “holy snakes, that’s sick.” Once the smoke faded away Callan admittedly nodded to previous question
Phoenix laughed “it’s my element bro” after noticing his nod Phoenix passed the joint back to him “but seriously before I get too faded I need you to dj for my party tonight Callan. Think about it, Blake will be big turned on, I’ll have Elliot step in so you can get some alone time with her. Then after the skating and dancing you can come and play all the party games.”
Callan smiled cheekily as he took the joint “I’m invited to the annual party?”
Phoenix nudged him “better, you’re owning the party dude. The playlist is yours, so you are basically setting the mood, I can’t think of a better guy to do it”
Callan shook his head modestly “sure you can, there’s plenty more lit people than me. That’s the vibe you want.”
Phoenix smiled “nah, you’re a hopeless romantic with swagger. That’s the vibe I need. Plus you’ll be plenty lit once you have some of party favors.”
Callan chuckled and took another hit “alright I’ll do it”
“Yes!” Phoneix gave him a quick and awkward hug before chilling back with him as they finished the joint
After the joint was finished Callan laid back on the top of the train and let the air hit him “can’t believe you caught my sleeve on fire”
Phoenix laughed“Good thing fire can’t burn a dragon right.?”
Callan sighed “I’m a wolf dude”
“Ehhh I don’t know, I’ve been studying this dance of dragons book like crazy, and no matter what...if you’re born from a dragon you have it inside you. In any species, human, wolf, wizard or goblin if mom or dad is a dragon you have it. That means Ellie and Elliot have it too” Phoenix explained “obviously they can’t shift but they might have some dormant power”
Callan looked at Phoenix “Dance of dragons? I’ve been reading a book called the Song of Wolves.”
Phoenix shrugged “small world”
Callan bit his lip “did you tell Ellie and Elliot about this yet?”
Phoenix eyed Callan curiously “not yet, Ellie is mad at me right now. Well mad at the world really. You know you really shouldn’t of had Ellie kiss Aflyn like that. It really screwed with her emotions.”
“I was saving his life!” Callan protested “plus it didn’t take that much pushing, Ellie was down for it”
A disgusted look grew on Phoenix’s face “alright I heard enough of all that. Let’s get back. Phoenix turned around and opened the window on top of the train. “So I don’t catch you on fire again”
Callan chuckled before sliding down to the train floor again. Once he entered the room he realized he reeked of weed and sat shamefully beside Blake again who just smiled at him without a care in the world.
“What was that about?” Diego asked sternly
“Oh um, Phoenix asked me to DJ his annual party.” He said looking from Diego to Blake and getting the butterflies instantly “will you go with me?”
Blake smiled “of course, I won’t ever leave you alone carino”
Diego snorted “well, if it Phoenix’s party I doubt I’d be invited.”
Penny and Josh entered the room after her little episode in the bathroom “yeah especially after he sees this” penny handed Diego the news letter with his face kissing Hali’s all over it and sat beside Diego.
Everyone’s eyes widened as Josh sat down “first she was freaking out about the whole wolf then someone handed her some gossip and she’s back” he shrugged unsure what it was all about as he sat with callan.
——-
Phoenix returned to his car only to find his ex fling sitting in seat. “Oh hell no” Phoenix opened the door “Alyssa, what are you doing here? Guys I thought I told you to save these seats?”
Aflyn pointed over head “Well no one is taking orders from you, plus she already has her stuff here so.” He shrugged and smirked “if you wanted the seat you should’ve been here to hold it for yourself before the train started moving.”
“Yeah Phoenix chill” Alyssa laughed as she rummaged through her purse scooting over towards the door across from Aj so Phoenix could sit “were friends right?”
Phoenix huffed as he took the seat between Hali and Alyssa “No. We were never friends.”
Alyssa gasped “what do you mean? I’ve seen your di-“ Phoenix put his hand over her mouth and she smiled against it making him pull away and give her a rather odd stare. “Anyway you might want to reconsider our friendship when you see what I got for the party favors.” Alyssa pulled out a small box excitedly and reveled to everyone her stash of small baggies filled with white power “molly on the right and coke on the left” She handed Phoenix the packet of molly “here your favorite” Phoenix pushed her hand away.
“No thanks” Phoenix said pushing away the packet before it had the chance to tempt him further. He then looked at Hali and gave her a rather shameful stare.
Ellie then sat up out of her dark little huddle by the window and reached towards Alyssa’s box taking a packet of cocaine.
Alyssa smiled “oooo that a girl. Anyone else?”
“Wait Ellie no!” Phoenix objected
Aj then reached over “I’ll take one of each” she said taking a few packets “for the party”
Ellie pulled her hand away and turned her nose towards the baggie quickly snorting half the bag before Phoenix ripped the rest away. She pushed her blonde hair back as the drug quickly entered her system. “Fuck! I feel so much better!”
“Thank god” aflyn said to himself just as the candy girl came in with the cart. “Hogwarts tea anyone?” Aflyn stoody up “tea?!?” He said excitedly, but the trolley girl shook her head as aflyn eyed the cart for tea kettles and packets. Instead she held out a paper.
Alyssa took the pamphlet instantly “it’s not literal tea moron.” She said shooting aflyn a cold but seductive stare “One will be perfect” Alyssa responded to the trolley girl before closing her out. She looked through the pamphlet as Ellie wiped her nose looking at the door as if frightened by the trolley girls sudden appearance. “Awhhh” Alyssa said turning to the front of the paper “look, they made you the cover Hali. Isn’t that sweet? They must’ve felt bad for you.”
Phoenix looked over at the pamphlet curiously then felt his heart sink as he saw the picture of Hali and Diego kissing. Below it he saw the picture of him and Hali also kissing, and he grabbed the paper. It was supposed to be a place of intimacy and part of him felt violated on top of his rage towards Diego.
Ellie then snatched the paper from Phoenix and began reading it aloud, high off the coke she needed to do something, and what she was great at was reading. Everyone in the car began to fight over the sheet of paper as Ellie began talking, which was exactly Alyssa’s intention as she also played her part in the mini scrap. Ellie then opened up the window and threaten to throw out the paper “sit down! Or I’ll throw it out.” Everyone sat but Phoenix and Hali teleported away. Ellie sighed then closed the window before taking her seat. “Anyway, where was I?” She read the rest aloud.
As the small fight over the gossip began in the car Hali and Ellie we’re both being pressed against the window. Phoenix could see the fear fill Hali as her eyes started to shift and that’s when he grabbed her hand and teleported them to the top of the train. She gasped as she landed back down on the moving train and he put his hands on either side of her to keep her steady from the sudden transition. “Stay with me Hali, breathe” he pleaded breathing with her. Phoenix could feel his own dragon stir, stir as if it was trying to dance with her again. “You know what will happen if you shift..if I shift.” He reminded her, feeling his inner dragon kick him internally for that. Hali breathed with him, staring into his eyes and getting lost in them, she felt her stomach stir as the dragon within her remained somehow stagnant from his words. “You’re not mad at me?” She asked “for the kiss?” Phoenix still positioned on top of her pursed his lips “no, I could never be mad at you..Diego on the other hand” he shook his head and smiled at her fondly “truth is, you can kiss whoever you want. How else would you know our kiss is the best kiss you will ever feel if you didn’t have anyone to compare it to?”
Hali bit her lip as she leaned towards him and Phoenix did the same before stopping himself to say “if we kiss now, I might shift.” He admitted “but I really want to” he said leaning in more enticingly and grabbing ahold of some of her hair as he bit his lip too. Then he pushed himself off of her rubbing his temples in frustration. “Are you good?” He asked
Hali rubbed her lips together as Phoenix pulled away, and lowered her head. She nodded while lifted her gaze back up to meet with his, "Yeah, I'm- Im better." She gave a sarcastic chuckle, "Didnt expect a whole article on me the first day back."
Phoenix chuckled in agreement "yeah well, no one could expect that." He then shrugged "guess that makes you the most popular girl in school now and me being the most popular boy must ask, how does that make you feel?" He asked putting out a pretend microphone as if he was her interviewer
Hali laughed and shook her head really pondering it for a moment “I don’t know, I’ve never been popular before.” She turned and looked at him, smiling as she took his pretend microphone away to ask him a question “maybe you can shed some light for us mr. popular”
“Glad you asked Hali. It’s not as fun as you think. There’s some positives but it’s mostly just a huge pain in my ass”
“You can’t say that on live television Phoenix” she scolded playfully and rising a chuckle out of him once more “why don’t you start with the positives.” She blushed, it was rare to see Phoneix smile and it looked so good on him.
Phoenix gave Hali a smirk “are we role playing right now? Your a little kinky aren’t you hals.” She blushed and tapped the pretend microphone “is this thing on? Okay some positives. Well the parties are amazing, the drugs and the booze, the girls. The constant hype people around you making you feel special. Umm... yeah that’s about it”
Hali brought the microphone back to her“what kind of girls?”
“All kinds of girls.” He admitted shamelessly as he looked into her eyes
“Oh yeah who was your favorite?” She asked coyily
“I don’t know, haven’t had her yet...but she is by far my favorite kiss.” He replied by looking into her eyes and leaning into the pretend microphone.
Hali brushed a hair back behind her ear as she smiled slightly “and the negatives?”
“Negatives?” Phoneix repeated now confused, there were no negatives of kissing Hali aside from the stupid mating call he made currently cock blocking him.
“Of popularity Mr. Max” she said into the microphone as she watched him drift away in thought.
Phoenix laughed and got a little red in the cheeks as he took the mircophone “the crazies, the stalkers, the constant expectation of everyone needing you to be perfect. Ellie struggles with that one the most but for dragons you’re expected to be perfect in different ways. You need to be a badass, be in the right house, play the right sports and be spectacular at it, be cold and heartless but don’t kill anyone.” Phoenix shook his head “you ever notice how me and Aflyn are always in the same boat even though we are one tiny insult away from tipping the boat over completely?” He shrugged “it’s what’s expected, we have to be hogwarts bad boys. Then there’s you..and you just blow all those expectations out of the water. No pun intended. You represent what dragons really are, not the cold malicious creatures they shove down our throats, not that we can’t be” he said thinking back to his dad for a moment “but we are so much more than that. We are graceful, loyal and protective over the ones we care about and we are pretty damn merciful considering our power.” He nudged her “a girl like that needs protected from these vultures. Which is why you should be my date for tonight. The party of the century won’t be the same without you, plus your brothers will be there. Callan out there killing the turn tables. So what do you say?” He asked holding the pretend mic out to her “will you go with me?”
His speech resonated with her, and she listened intently, her eyes lighting up. Blushing as he continued, a slight smile spread across her face. His last line pulled a chuckle out of her, pausing as he asked his question. Hali sighed dramatically “I don’t know..Diego already asked me...”
Phoenix clenched his fist “how’d that dumpster dog know about my annual party..”
“Relax” Hali said placing her hand on his shoulder “I’m only joking, I’ll go with you”
Phoenix’s eyes brightened “really?” He asked in a high pitched tone which he then cleared with his throat “really?”
She smiled, “Yes, really.”
Ellie read the first part about Phoenix and frowned “oh this bitch really just low blowed my family. Okay” she slapped the note around fanning herself with it as she paced. She noticed aflyn stare curiously at the back of the paper and she scoffed pressing the news letter against his chest. “Here I can’t stand to read the rest anyway” Ellie sat down but her mind was calculating every potential suspect on who this anonymous writer was. Alyssa being on the top of her list, she watched her the most as Aflyn read the next part.
Alyssa giggled “not to mention she basically called your sister a floosie!” She said to aflyn then shook her head “which is just awful, I’m sorry guys I thought Hali being on front page meant something cheerful!” She looked out at the window “what kind of candy Lady was that??” She looked back at aflyn nether less as he began skimming the words, after he appeared done reading he scoffed “well whoever this twat is they certainly love Callan.” He begins reading aloud “Callan whom I believe has the purest heart of all the Scamander family, has finally found love too as it appears in this photo of him holding hands and kissing Blake Gonzalo outside flourish and bots.” He said slapping the note “and that’s after just roasting Blake.” Aflyns eyes kept reading then widened at the next part. Aj grabbed the note and aflyn said her name.
AJ was overlooking Aflyn's shoulder as he read, but a particular image caught her eye as she snatched the paper away. Aflyn tried to take it back before she read aloud, "This leads to the youngest Scamander, the arrogant playboy, Aflyn. At first, it seemed he had at least some morals like his father, but as it turns out, he would still cheat on his girl."
AJ's head whipped around towards him, and Aflyn's expression was a combination of shock and confusion, "Cheat? I would never cheat-"
She shoved the paper in his face, "Really?!"
"Wha-" he muttered, staring at the image of him on the raft with his wings out, Ellie with lingerie on, and them kissing each other, "I thought this was a dream."
AJ scoffed, "So you would dream about her?"
He looked over to Ellie, attempting to come up with an excuse, “Well, I was pretty much dead, and have you ever seen Sleeping Beauty? Clearly I was the beauty in this scenario, and needed to be woken up. I invited you, but you didn’t come, and the only other girl there was Ellie. Except for my sister, but that would be extremely wrong.” His eyes skimmed furtively over the room, “Wait, where is Hali?”
“So this bitch kissed you while you were unconscious?” AJ motioned towards Ellie.
Ellie was taken aback, “Look, it was Callan’s stupid idea. I didn’t know he was dating your ass until after the fact,” she began to yell, “So be careful who you call a bitch next time, because I will kick your ass.”
AJ stepped toward her, “Kick my ass? Did you mean kiss my ass? Like you kissed my boyfriend?” She laughed and placed her hand on Ellie’s forehead, pushing her away.
Ellie clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. “Shouldn’t of done that.” like a viper she grabbed ahold of AJs shirt and swung her to the other side of the car and kicked her gut so she smacked against the window
Alyssa began recording
Phoenix looked around curiously as he heard a thud come down below him. “Hmm. Hold my legs” he asked and slid down the side of the train to look into the window.
“Shit!” Hali gasped as she barley caught onto Phoenix’s waist laying her head unintentionally on his butt for a moment. She sat up the second she noticed, pretty nice ass, she noted. “What’s going on down there?”
Phoenix pulled himself up, feeling his head rush from the angle he was at and sighed to Hali “Ellie and Aj are fighting. Like fists are being thrown, I gotta go down and help her.”
Just then aflyn poked up out of the top of the train “you guys better not be mounting each other out here.” He said before looking at the both of them just chillin on the side of the train. “Good”
Phoneix sat up “what are you doing? Go back down there and break that fight up scamander.” He said as he offered to help Hali up.
“Why? Alyssa is recording it-“ just like that Aflyn was pulled down from his friend hawk.
Phoneix gave Hali a confused stare “okay then, that was- weird.” He walked over and saw hawk laughing down at aflyn. “Your legs were just dangling there I could help myself.” Phoneix shook his head, god hawk was just like Hudson, good, aflyn deserved it. “Go break up that fight pussies.” Phoneix repeated closing the hatch then looked at Hali. “Wana take a walk along the top of the train? I think they all need a minute still.”
“Fight?” Hawk looked at Aflyn excitedly as he cracked his knuckles “let’s do it. Who we pouncing in on?”
Aflyn gave Hawk an annoyed stare before sighing and resting on his elbows “it’s Ellie and Aj”
Hawk laughed “oh hell yeah. I love a good cat fight, why would we break that up?”
Hudson slid the door open harshly and got ran out purposely stepping on aflyns fingers as he went to his side of the car where the fight was happening “whoever saves the girl gets the girl cock suckers”
“Oh no” Alyssa stopped Hudson from entering “can’t let you ruin this tea.” She gasped suddenly as elsa got thrown against the door.
Hudson entered as alysaa let go of the handle “easy there ladies...you don’t want to get expelled before we get there right? Woah-“ he ducked as AJ swung at him
Ellie wiped under nose and looked down at the blood on her hand as Hudson entered then looked up at Aj as he started speaking “he’s right.” She stopped swinging “Aflyn is a literal dumbass, neither you nor him are worth getting expelled over.” She sat up “I’ll find somewhere else to sit.” She grabbed the thing of hers that had fallen from the fight and made her way out of the car and into callans “will someone switch seats with with me?” She asked blood dropping down her face. Blake was at her side instantly.
Tori eyed Elsa suspiciously as she she entered the car and Diego sat beside her to make room.
Penny sat up instantly “ewh blood! There’s way too many people in this car!” She squealed.
Callan stood up almost bumping his head in the process “I’ll go” he said looking down at Blake and kissing her head sweetly before he left.
Ellie smiled at Blake as she held a tissue to her nose “you guys are so cute it makes me sick”
Blake chuckled “I know senorita” she said bringing out her entire make up kit.
Callan walked back to where aflyn, Ellie and Hali were seating to take Ellie’s spot when he saw only aflyn in the car making out with AJ. He sighed before looking down at Alyssa Lockhart squatted down by the door watching tik toks.
Alyssa looked up at Callan and smiled “oh, hi Callan. Look” she showed him the video of Ellie and AJ fighting and Callan rolled his eyes “you’re not fun”
He opened the door “glad to see you guys worked things out” he said to aflyn and AJ as he sat down “where’s Hali and Phoenix?” Suddenly the room filled with purple fire and Callan jumped back as he felt the train jolt around in the gust as cold as ice.
Phoenix landed with his arm around Hali’s shoulder in the center of their car “here we are!”
Callan stood up “are you guys crazy! You can’t just go using your powers combined like that all Willy nilly! You could’ve killed us all!” He shouted
“But we didn’t” phoneix said nonchantly as he sat down “so chill man”
Callan looked at Hali who stood in front of him firmly “we didn’t mean to combine our powers either Callan. It just happened.” She sneered
Phoenix sort of chuckled and Callan glared at him “you wana go?”
Phoenix pointed to himself “me?” Callan nodded and Aflyn leaned forward inticed by the sudden drama “Um no, you don’t want this smoke trust me. Plus you’re my DJ, I’m not gonna fight you.”
Callan shook his head “right. Yeah I don’t know what came over me” he sat down
Hali shook her head suddenly feeling over whatever she was mad about to begin with “yeah me either, I’m sorry cal.”
——-
Before Hudson knew it he was on the opposite side of the train with the rest of the side characters. Heated he leant over to Elliot “aren’t you tired of being a pawn?”
Elliot gave Hudson a puzzled look “a pawn?”
Huddy rolled his eyes “yeah, the side character, the ones whose only purpose is to be the filler for the big guys Aflyn, Callan and Phoenix.”
Elliot shook his head “yeah I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a main character, kinda a big deal.”
Hudson pursed his lips “yeah then why are you in the back of the train with us?”
Hudson bit his lip “yeah and why is it we never get the girl?”
Elliot smirked “we get tons of girls.”
“True” Hudson agreed “but we never get THE girl. You know how long I’ve been wanting to date Ellie?? But nooooo Aflyn fucking Scamander, who by the way Phoenix hates and already has a girlfriend is making moves on your sister!.” Hudson clenched his fist and made somewhat of a growl “ughhh, so irritating, and you” Hudson sat up now and pointed to Elliot “you think you’re going to score with that hot mamacita Blake well.. I got news for you buddy Callan is going to get her because he’s a main character.”
Elliot shook his head
Hudson smacked the window “Elliot you’re literally the guy who carries everyone’s bags! You’re not a main character. Callan even without his voice will be better than you, and I know it sucks but it’s true. Just like I will be nothing compared to Aflyn or Phoenix. At least you’re a Max, you’re guaranteed more screen time.”
Some of what Hudson was saying resonated with Elliot, though he didn’t understand most of his metaphors he went along with it anyway. “Well then, let’s get some more screen time. Wana concoct us an evil plan?”
Hudson grinned “that’s exactly what I want to do.”
The rest of the car nodded in agreement and Elliot shrugged “I’m the life of the party, obviously you guys needed it the most.” He argued

#JaneTheVirgin Chapter 57: Abbey Hits the Road
#JaneTheVirgin-Helicopter Mom
Rating: 6  (no, wait: 7, for getting rid of Abbey!)
I know we’re getting Jane’s post Michael-life piece by piece so we’re not overwhelmed with grief, but I need to know when Jane cut her hair.  I SHAVED MY ENTIRE HEAD THIS PAST WEEKEND and I want to relate to Jane’s big chop.
Enough about me.
18 months after Michael died, Jane gets a bad bout of laryngitis.  Rafael is over helping her sing Mr. Sweetface to sleep.  Once they get Mateo tucked in, Rafael decides to take advantage of Jane’s voicelessness and he tells her he is dating Abbey and it’s getting serious. What can Jane say? She sounds like a frog. Rafael also convinces Jane to get her metaphorical voice back; he tells her she needs to start writing again.  On a whim, Jane starts researching Florida in the 1900s and begins writing the novel that eventually landed her a book deal.
It’s time for Mateo to meet his aide, Carly. Jane and Rafael breathe a sigh of relief as Carly seems to be just what Mateo needs to behave in class. Jane and Rafael leave and they run into Stacey, who shadily tells Jane she understands why Mateo needs an aide.  Rafael is oblivious, but Jane knows a Mean Mom when she sees one.
Jane goes to meet an aide of her own, the editor of the book she’s going to have published. Jane’s nervous because her editor is a guy, and Rafael makes the observation that Jane is more comfortable with female authority figures. And why wouldn’t she be? Jeremy Howe, Jane’s new editor, is a sports-loving, plaid-wearing, interjection-shouting man boy.  How is he going to nurture and birth Jane’s tender re-telling of her and Michael’s love story, which she’s set in Old Timey Time Florida? Jeremy loves the story, but he thinks it needs more Bang! Bam! Bang!  He suggests another obstacle and Jane agrees to try to add it.
Later, Jane overhears Stacey talking to someone about Mateo. Jane tells Stacey to grow up and keep Mateo’s name out of her mouth. Then she completely dismisses the woman Stacey was talking to. Bad move, Jane, that was Gwen Conway, the head of Mateo’s school.
Back at Rafael’s, Jane worries about her faux pas with the Gwen. Petra tells Jane that Mateo is going to suffer because of her gaffe. Abbey looks worried. Why is Rafael lounging around his penthouse with his two babymamas and his girlfriend like a sheik with a harem?  That tells me right there that Rafael isn’t interested in Abbey, who’s just asked Rafael if she can move in with him. Rafael hemmed and hawed and said he had to think about Anna, Elsa, Mateo, and any other children of his who might turn up.  But, seriously, if Raf really loved Abbey, she wouldn’t always be lurking in the background listening to Solano/Villanueva drama.
PetraChuck go to brunch at an out of the way restaurant. Chuck tells Petra he thinks she’s ashamed of him. She is a little. Just because he curls her toes between the sheets doesn’t mean he can act right out in these streets. Petra does really like him, though, so she suggests an evening out at the Marbella.
Rogelio goes to Donnie Shapiro, the jaguar of lawyers to get his $10 million breach of contract lawsuit from the De La Vega Factor Factor taken care of care of. Donnie deposes Xiomara and she tells how the show defamed her character. Of course, Bruce is there because BRUCE IS PERFECT AND SUPPORTIVE IN EVERY WAY. Alba loves him, Jane loves him, and Xo leans on his strength as he neglects his law practice and teen daughter to be by Xo’s side ALL THE TIME.   Bruce just wants the lawsuit over because he wants what’s best for Xo. He even mediates a truce between Ro and Xo—replete with eye contact and apologies—that probably seals his doom as Xiomara seems to be repressing some feelings for Ro, who was making puppy dog eyes at Xo.
Petra lets Jane tag along to the Mean Mommy’s Monte Carlo Fundraising Meeting. These women are balling; they’ve got courtside seats at NBA games and Beyoncé tickets and Jane is penny pinching and being boring. Jane is such an odd duck. I don’t understand why no one knows Mateo is the almost-immaculate conceived heir to millions who was almost delivered on a city bus, whose grandfather is an international telenovela/reality TV star. Jane had a website, y’know.
Jane’s re-write keeps getting stuck. Josephine (Jane) is pregnant by Rake (Rafael) but in love with Detective Martin (Michael, who we never get to see).  She adds every obstacle she can think of—Old–Timey Rake twirls his mustache and looks at Old-Timey Xo’s bosoms (ewww, her mom and her baby daddy?!), Old Timey Penelope (Petra), even Old-Timey Alba with a parasol and wisdom, but nothing cuts through Jane’s writer’s block. Jane tells her editor Jeremy, nothing is working and she thinks having her heroine be torn between Rake and Martin is enough. Jeremy didn’t read a love relationship between Rake and Josephine at all, but he thinks it’s a great idea.
Rafael asks Petra what she thinks about Abbey moving in. Petra says she likes her well enough and tells Raf she’s bringing Chuck to the Marbella. Raf calls Elvis and tells him to break into Petra’s room when she’s not there. What is Raf up to?
Petra forgets her phone in her room and excuses herself from Chuck to go get it. Petra walks in on Elvis and freaks out. When Elvis leaves, Petra retrieves a leather-bound book from the air vent. She texts Chuck down at the Marbella Bar and tells him a work thing came up. Chuck, disgusted, leaves.  Abbey knocks just as Petra slides the book in a drawer. Wanh wanh wanh wanh wanh, Abbey says, as she asks Petra something about moving in with Rafael.  Petra givesher kind advice.
It’s Monte Carlo Fundraiser Night! Jane is manning the door, selling raffle tickets, and trying to figure out what happens next in her re-write.  Jane, Abbey, and Rafael wind up in the kitchen washing glasses when they run short (Rafael learned to wash dishes in the hoosegow).  Ugh, Abbey! She’s such a hanger-on! Nevertheless, Raf has decided to ask her to move in and has a cute card in his pocket because when you want to say what’s in your heart you should use greeting cards. For real.
Chuck won’t take Petra’s calls since she ditched him at the bar and so Petra gets drunk at Monte Carlo Night (that seems a little out of character for an Alpha Mom like Petra at a school related function, but whatevs). Petra tells Rafael he’s stringing Abbey along and he needs to just let her go. Of course Abbey overhears this. Drunk Petra shows up at Chucks wearing nothing and I mean nothing but a pink trench coat and a drunken smile. She opens her coat just as Chuck opens the door on…his poker buddies. Later, Petra confesses to moving Scott’s bones to the Fairwick side of the property line and Chuck storms off.
Bruce the Best Boyfriend In the World sets up Ro’s studio for a surprise proposal which Rogelio ruins when he asks Bruce to be his lawyer. Bruce accepts Ro’s proposal and Ro accepts Bruce’s. Ro seems sad.
Jane nailed her re-write.  Jeremy’s advice helped her see that Josephine was in love with Rake. At first Jane felt guilty, like writing about Josephine and Rake was a betrayal of her love for Michael (it was!), but Abuela reminded Jane that she had to fall in love with Rafael to realize how much she really loved Michael. This sage advice frees Jane to reimagine JANE AND RAFAEL’S GREATEST HITS. I mean everything, in the tennis club sharing dreams over grilled cheese, by the bench with the magnolia leaves floating down—everything necessary to send #TeamRafael into paroxysms of joy.  It turns out Rafael read Jane’s re-write and it convinced him that what he had with Abbey wasn’t the kind of love he had with Jane (y’think?) and Rafael broke up with Abbey. (Quiet down #TeamRafael).
Jane fires Carly the gossiping aide, gets Mateo a new one he likes, and makes up with Stacey. I know I’m not crazy about four year old Mateo, but he is a good little actor who has a way with words. Maybe it’s just hard for me to think of little Mateo with his own personality.
Even though Abbey was the blandest character ever to spend the night at the Marbella and will not be missed in any way, form, or fashion, she is also a woman scorned who thinks Petra is the cause of her scorning. As her swansong, Abs drops off a package to Dennis at the police station. With a very elaborate pop-up card featuring the Marbella, the Fairwick and Scott’s burial place and Petra’s leather-bound book, Abbey nudges Dennis to reopen the investigation. dun Dun DUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pleasant eppy. It’s a solid 6 with an extra point for getting rid of the blandness that was Abbey.  I can’t lie, even though I’m #TeamMichael4eva, I can’t resist Season One scenes of Jane and Rafael falling in love. That’s the problem, I don’t want to be reminded of how great their love story was; I want to see a new one, with Rafael or someone new, just get on with it. It’s been three years, Jane will always love Michael, and we want her to be happy.
It’s nice to see Xo happy, but Bruce is boring and clearly she belongs with Rogelio.  I think Xo and Bruce are going to get married (and again, we didn’t get to see them fall in love! That’s what makes this show fun, the falling in love, not the perfect couple plot) and Xo is going to cheat on him, putting a spin on the way their relationship went the last time.
Maybe we’ll get some romance with Alba and the Marbella gift shop guy.
To be continued…
Let me know what you think with a like and a comment,
Kellybelle

@katie-dub made this gorgeous edit for my story, which you can see HERE. It’s so brilliant, check it out!
The whole of the next morning Emma has butterflies. From the moment she wakes up, all the way to work. They flutter with every thought, with every movement. Even though she was stupidly drunk last night, she can still remember almost every detail.
His hands in her hair, his lips against hers.
During make-up she catches sight of herself in the mirror. Her face is too pale, her eyes are too bright. She jumps every time the door opens, but it’s not him. It’s never him. She sits on the chair, not as chatty as she usually is.
“It’s a gorgeous day out,” Ariel comments as she combs her hair.
“Mm.”
His hands in her hair, his lips against hers.
“Emma, are you okay? You seem a little… distracted.”
“Just tired,” says Emma.
She tries to smile but it comes out as an awkward grimace. She searches for any sign that he’s been here, or any sign that he will be here. But he doesn’t show. She doesn’t have a scene with him either. It’s a good thing. She keeps messing up her lines without him here, she can’t imagine what it would be like with him.
She’s sat in the cafeteria when Elsa finds her, staring at an apple and some water. She hadn’t bothered getting a proper meal or even a sandwich, afraid she wouldn’t eat it. Even now she watches the apple with a slight disgust. She opens her water and takes a sip.
“Not hungry?” asks Elsa as she sits down opposite Emma with a tray full of food.
“Nope,” she says.
“How come?”
“Hangover.” In spite of herself, she takes a bite out of her apple. As soon as she does, she regrets it. It crunches loudly and it’s too sweet.
“Oh yeah.” She picks up her sandwich, lettuce and sauce falling out of it as she takes a bite. Once she swallows she says, “Went out drinking after the show?”
“Uhuh.”
“With Killian.”
Emma gives her a look over her apple. “Don’t say it like that.”
“Say it like what?”
“Like that.”
After half of her sandwich filling has fallen out, Elsa gives up and drops it back onto her plate. She starts on her potato chips, opening the packet with a pop. “All I’m saying is we all saw the interview on TV last night.”
“So?”
“So. Captain Swan. Really?” She raises her eyebrows.
Emma shrugs. “I can’t help it if the fans want us together. Fans are crazy.”
“Emma, they don’t want you together. They think you are together. After all that evidence, I’m starting to believe it myself, and I work with you.”
Emma rolls her eyes. “We’re not together.” Feelings and images of last night flood her mind again. She rests a hand over her stomach, hoping to squash the butterflies.
Elsa leans forward. “And why aren’t you?”
“Because we’re not.”
“Oh, come on. We’re all noticed the doe eyes and yearning looks.”
“I don’t yearn.” Emma takes another bite out of her apple. This time more aggressively.
“He does,” comes Robin’s voice, as he slides in next to Elsa.
Robin. Where did he come from? Was he listening to their private conversation the whole time? The thought replaces the nerves with anger. She can feel her face starting to flush.
“He does,” Elsa agrees.
“He talks about you all the time. It’s all ‘Emma does this, Emma does that’. I love the man, but it’s rather getting on my nerves.”
“This is ridiculous,” says Emma because it’s the only thing she can say.
They’re not together, no, but she can’t exactly tell them about their kissing session last night. She can’t even think about it without losing almost all train of thought.
“You’re blushing,” Elsa accuses.
“I am not.” She resists the urge to cover her face in her hands like a schoolgirl.
Then she spots him, and she does cover her face with her hands, if only for a second. He’s walking over to them (well, Emma), his expression fully fixed on her. When she catches his eyes, he smiles. Cue butterflies.
“Swan,” he says, as he slides into the seat next to her.
“Hi, Elsa,” says Elsa.
“How are you doing, Robin?” says Robin.
He waves a dismissive hand in their direction, and then he turns fully to Emma, voice dropping a notch. “So,” he murmurs. “I was wondering if you’d like to come over to mine tonight. To rehearse.”
“‘To rehearse’. Sure thing, mate,” coughs Will. Will? When did he get here? All she needs is for Graham to turn up and that would be perfect.
Killian ignores them, keeping his eyes firmly on Emma’s. “What do you say, love?”
She considers it. They both finish early today because they do have a big scene coming up, and they need some time to work out how to play it. That’ll be made up later by late nights and early mornings. And she really, really, really wants to be alone with Killian right now. That conversation and kiss have lit a spark in her. A spark which just keeps growing and growing the more she leaves it unattended.
“Sure thing,” she says, trying to keep her voice neutral.
“Excellent,” he says softly. He’s inching even closer, his leg pressing up against hers. “Shall we say eight?”
“Are we even here?” comes Will’s voice again, and then a hissed “Ow” as Elsa jabs him in the ribs.
“Fine by me.”
“Excellent,” he repeats. In one swift motion he rises, eyes never leaving hers. Then he disappears across the cafeteria and out the door. Emma lets out a slow and steady breath.
When she finally gets back into her house, at six PM, she drops her bag on the floor with a thump and makes something to eat. Just pasta because it’s quick and it’s easy and she’s still not entirely hungry.
Afterwards, she showers and moisturises. She never moisturises. She picks out her navy jeans and a button up shirt and dries her hair until it’s the softest it’s ever been.
Only when she’s trying to do her make-up in that cramped bathroom does it hit Emma that she now has enough money to buy another house, a bigger house. The dollars keep rolling in and she’s hardly touched a penny of it. It’s in her nature to save every cent she can, but to have this amount of money and not do anything with it is insane. She makes a mental note to talk to Henry about it later.
She gets a cab to Killian’s. The whole way she nervously watches out the window at the lights in store windows flicking as the car drives past. In no time at all, the car pulls up outside his house, and Emma throws some money in the driver’s direction. She tells him to keep the change, and hurls herself out the car and up the steps before he can reply.
Killian answers the door before she even knocks. He opens it to see Emma stood with a fist in the air, inches away from the wood.
“Eager?” she asks, raising her eyebrows.
“Ha! You sound like me. Come on in.”
She follows him inside, glancing around at the familiar white walls and laminated flooring. She catches the scent of an air freshener, and quickly locates one which is plugged into the wall.
Once again, she’s astounded at how tidy his house is. Sure, she might have a teenage boy, but she’s pretty sure if she didn’t have Henry her house wouldn’t be anywhere near as sparkling as this.
“Can I get you a drink?” he asks, as she follows him into the kitchen.
“What have you got?”
“Rum.” He throws her a cheeky glance over his shoulder. “Is that okay?”
“It’s fine.”
He pours rum into two glasses as she brings her script out her bag and throws it onto the table, as well as a pen. She quickly learnt to always have a pen on hand for notes and such. Now she’s always making notes. Her script is covered in them. Scribbles of every colour in the rainbow.
He holds the glass to her, and she takes it with a soft, “Thanks.”
“You know, I’m surprised you said yes to this,” he muses as he takes a sip of his drink.
Her eyes are on the script. “Why wouldn’t I?”
“Things have been slightly… stormy between us recently. I feared we’d be sailing on bumpy seas for the rest of our partnership.”
“Oh?” If she were honest with herself, she feared the same. She and Killian had a strange start and then an even stranger middle. She’s never found someone so irritating yet intoxicating before. How does that even work?
“Aye. Especially after… last night.” His eyes flicker up to hers, like he’s testing the water, trying to work out whether they’re going to acknowledge last night or pretend it didn’t happen.
“After last night,” she confirms with a small smile.
He smiles back and drinks deeply from his glass before setting it down on the table. “Shall we rehearse?”
They’re standing in the living room now, scripts in hands as they throw lines back and forth like a tennis match. This is a big, romantic scene where Alexander is finally confessing his feelings, finally being honest with Rose. As much as Emma loves Rose’s character, she’s starting to see more similarities between herself and Alexander. She too has a hard time opening her heart. Even now, she’s debating whether to get out of there, but something in Killian’s eyes keeps her rooted to the spot.
“It’s like you’re always in two minds,” Emma accuses, eyes following the stream of words on the page. “Can’t you just love me or leave me?”
Killian fixes his eyes on Emma’s face as he speaks. “I’m afraid I can’t live without you.”
She’s blushing, she can feel it, but she keeps her eyes fixed on script. All she has to do is keep focus on the script. “Today, maybe. But what happens tomorrow when you want to leave me again?”
“I will never leave you again.”
“Prove it.”
Before she even has a chance to ask them to do it again, he’s kissing her. It shocks her, mostly because when they’ve rehearsed scenes before, they’ve never rehearsed the kisses. It’s one big no in the world of acting, especially with drinks in hand. (Granted, their drinks lay abandoned on the side, and she’s hardly touched hers.)
“How was that?” He asks as soon as they part.
“What? T-the lines or the…” God, did she just stutter? Did she actually stutter?
He raises one eyebrow the way he does. “Both.”
“Oh, um.” She swallows. “It wasn’t… bad?”
He kisses her again. It's gentle and loving, and something deemed utterly perfect for TV. He lingers for a moment, so she can feel his steady breathing. They both open their eyes at the same time and stare at each other for a few seconds. Tension crackles in the air.
“I don't think Alexander would do it like that,” Killian admits after a moment, voice low. He's still staring at her, and his eyes have a wild look about them. He blinks quickly, a flush rising to his cheeks. “I think he would take her face in his hands. Like this.”
Warmth encases Emma’s cheeks as he places his hands on either side of her face. His mouth falls against hers, and his unshaven chin scratches against her cheek but it's not unpleasant. Not when he's kissing her the way he is. And he has never kissed her like this before.
It's over all too quickly. She follows his lips as he moves away, the tip of her nose bumping his.
“What about that?” he whispers, removing his hands to brush them down her hair, right to the very tips.
A million answers course through her mind, but one speaks out through the sea. She knows what he wants to hear, even if they're treading on a minefield. “Good,” she whispers back. “But it needs to be longer,” she says, just because she needs him to kiss her longer.
He smiles, slow and seductive and suddenly she gets it - he wants her to play along. What an absolute-
He kisses her rough, almost devouring, and she can't help the little whimper that escapes. One hand buries itself in her mass of unruly waves. The other strokes down to her waist, where he curls a tight arm around her, and pulls her to him. The fabric of their clothes rubs together. Heat radiates from him, from every part of his body, from every touch, from their kiss.
His arm doesn't keep her locked in position for long. His hand moves feverishly up her body, like he can't stop touching her.
Perhaps he can’t.
Again it's he who breaks the kiss, but he doesn't stray too far. His face remains close, so that she can make out the scar on his cheek, and the colours in his eyes. They move restlessly, from her eyes to her hair to her lips, like he's memorising every feature on her face. It takes her a moment to realise he's trembling.
“I imagine,” he begins, “and I may be guessing, that he might want to kiss her like this...”
Before Emma has a moment to take that in, he’s peppering uneven kisses from her lips, downward. “Like this.” He's slowly walking her backwards, in a steady rhythm and she stumbles blindly. “Like this.” His mouth is at her jaw now, kissing a path from her ear to her chin. Her back hits a wall, cold even through her sweater and jeans. He presses every inch of his body against hers, eliciting a gasp. The gasp isn't born of acting and it isn't Rose’s reaction. It solely belongs to Emma. Then again, this isn't Alexander kissing her.
His lips dip further down, just below her jawline, and onto her neck. Slow, hot and needing, he kisses again and again. Over and over.
“Is this right?” He murmurs, a low rumble that makes her quiver, breath against her throat. “Would she react like this?”
“I think Rose would-” Her voice falters as he continues his sweet, slow assault. “Rose would-”
Her hands sink into his hair, curling around those soft locks. When her hands have been in his hair before, she’s not had time to truly savour the moment. It was for a job. Now, she commits it to memory. So soft, so thick.
He chuckles. It’s dark and throaty and muffled and doing things to her. “Rose would…?”
“Killian.”
And just like that, it's like she's flicked a switch on him. His kisses come not necessarily faster, but with a new sense of urgency. Hungry. Demanding.
She's felt his hands tangled in her hair, lips against her neck but never like this. Before, it was for the cameras. The intention was never to seduce, but to entertain. His motions were robotic, almost detached but here, right now, they're making her knees weak. Especially when his hands begin to snake up her sweater, as he murmurs in her ear.
“Killian…” Emma warns, completely breathless.
Killian’s head snaps up to gaze at her. His eyes still have that wild look, hinting unspeakable things that turn her to jelly.
“Ah, my apologies,” he begins, pressing another kiss to her mouth. “It's bad form to make love to a woman against a wall. Especially the first time.” Without further ado he scoops her up bridal style, before she has a moment to catch her breath, or process exactly what he's just said. “And a woman as beautiful as you, Emma Swan,” he continues, his playful voice reminiscent of the usual Killian Jones, as he carries her up the stairs, “Deserves my full and prompt attention.”
She doesn't comment, but she's sure he can read her thoughts on her face, and she's positive they reflect the nerves fluttering in her stomach. Her cheeks are pink. It’s like she’s on fire.
He nudges the door open with his foot. They walk into a midst of cool darkness. It's amazing Killian doesn't fall over anything because she can hardly make out his face, which might be a good thing. The look in his eyes is something she’ll still see in the dead of night, when no-one else is around.
“I'll need you to turn the light on, love.”
Shaking fingers drag across the cold wall, searching for the switch. She feels nothing but the smooth plaster.
“Anytime today,” Killian warns, strained.
“What's the matter, Jones?” she asks as her fingers continue their search. “Aren't strong enough to keep going?”
“You're about to find out exactly how long I can go for, love.”
Usually any man’s flirtatious nature is enough to repulse her, but this man… She blushes in the darkness, grateful he can't see her.  Though perhaps he can feel the heat radiate from her cheeks.
Her fingertips collide with that small, little cog of plastic. She presses it in. Light pours from the bulb, a little too harsh for her liking. Killian’s too, it would seem, as he gestures towards the cog. “Dim the lights, if you would.”
She does so, twisting the cog until the outlines of the furnitures blur, and a soft light falls on them. She watches his face as he carries her over to the bed, jaw set in determination. When he catches her watching him, he offers her a smile. Small and… nervous? Killian Jones, nervous?
Gently, he lays her down on the silk bedsheets, like she's the most precious thing on the entire earth. The cold is a little shocking at first, prickling through her clothes. The bed dips as he climbs on, and braces both his arms by the side of her head. His eyes trail over her; her pale hair splayed out over the pillow like a fan, her face staring back.
She’s not sure if she's doing the right thing. This could end badly for the both of them, especially if tomorrow comes and she runs. There's a very good chance she'll run.
Yet it's been so long and Killian is so attractive and dark and damn sexy.
He nips just under her jaw in a way that makes her toes curl. His hair tickles her chin and she can't help but tangle her hands in it again. His hair is swiftly becoming an addiction for her.
“I am going to,” he murmurs, “worship you, Emma.”
Her breath hitches in her throat. “Worship?”
“I have the firm belief that a man who does not properly worship his love,” he pauses. “Isn't a man at all.”
Sweet God above, she thinks.
“Oh,” she says. And then, “When you say worship…”
“You’ll see.” His lips ghost over her collarbone, just before he moves up to look at her again. She catches his smirk through heavy lidded eyes as his fingertips trail over her body.
She writhes beneath him, unable to keep his gaze. It's too intense, a mix of passion, desire and (dare she say it) love. Though she's sure all these are emotions of the moment, they make her feel vulnerable.
Slowly, he moves so both his hands are on either side of her head again. Her shaking hands move to his shirt. She undoes the first button. And then another. Then another. All in between slow, lazy kisses. Soon she's sliding it off his shoulders. Tentatively, her fingertips brush over his skin. Along his shoulders and the muscles in his arms. Down his chest.
“Your turn,” he grazes against her ear.
She doesn't trust herself to speak, and so she sits up. He moves with her, sitting back on his heels. She moves to her knees so they're level. Cautiously, his fingertips run along the rim of her sweater, dancing along her skin. His movements slow and eventually, they stop.
“What?” She asks.
“It's nothing, love,” he says. “It's just… I've wanted to do this for a long time.” His eyes move to hers. They're sincere.
She leans forward and kisses him, softly. His palms fall flat against her skin.
“I've wanted to do this.” He kisses her again.
“You kiss me all the time.”
“Not like this.” His next kiss makes her body crumble against him. He pulls her sweater over her head and throws it into the darkness. “Not here.” He kisses her shoulder. “Or here.” He kisses her collarbone. He's slowly pushing her back onto the bed. “Or here… Or here… “ His kisses are at her abdomen now. “Or here. Or-”
She gasps.
A dark chuckle. “Here.”
Suddenly, the intimacy is all too much for her. She hadn't even let Walsh touch her like this, or kiss her like this, and they were engaged, for crying out loud! So why is she letting Killian? His slow kisses are torturous, almost too much to bear when she just wants to-
Just wants to what exactly?
Not get attached. Though she fears it might be too late.
It's bad form to make love to a woman against a wall. His words ring in her ears. Make love. He said make love. She hadn't really registered at the time (She was, and still is, unable to think clearly.) But that's what he said.
Make love is what couples do who are in love. And she's not in love. She doesn't want to make love. She wants a damn good-
“Stop,” she breathes out.
He's back over her in an instant, eyes wide and concerned. “What's wrong? Are you okay?” Guilt bubbles to the surface.
“No, no, I'm fine,” she says, a little shocked. “I just thought… maybe we could… y’know… get this show on the road?”
His brows knit together in confusion for a moment. Then realisation dawns on his face. But rather than be offended, his lips curl into a smile. “You mean…”
“Now.”
He licks his lips. Quickly, in thought, not slowly and seductive like he's done so many times before. It's like he's considering something. Perhaps, the perfect words.
He purses his lips. “Not quite yet, love.”
And then he moves back to her neck, back to kissing and trailing, drawing noises from her she didn't even know she could make.
It's too intimate. It's making her skin flush and her voice break. The kind of kissing she won't forget, that's for sure. It does nothing to help the fire within her.
She runs her hands down his body, right down to his pants. Before she can even get to his button, he's got her hands, moving them away. He pins them above her head, in an inescapable grasp.
That's what she wants. She wants demanding. She wants rough. Like so many one night stands before this, she wants to forget, without feeling too close to her partner. With Killian, she's feeling too close to him already. Her walls are (have) slipping (slipped). She's trying to build them back up brick by brick but it's hard. Especially when she is so exposed to him, and not just by lack of clothes.
He moves back to her neck again. His hands, instead of holding her roughly, slip and intertwine with hers as his lips dance across her skin. Lazy, drawn out kisses and soft gentle bites that make her eyes roll back into her head a little.
It's too… It's too...
“Not like this!” she gasps.
“Yes, like this,” he growls.
“Killian…”
He's over her again, looking into her eyes with a soft expression. “Say the word and I'll stop. We can stop right now. I won't push you. I would never push you.”
“I…”
“Do you want to stop, Emma?”
“No,” she says, without hesitation.
And they don’t stop.

The Truth About What’s in My Bag
I love those cutesy magazine articles, ‘What’s in Her Bag?!” Each person the magazine interviews always seem to carry cute trinkets and expensive beauty products that are completely unreasonable. Elsa Hosk, Swedish Victoria’s Secret model, carries $36 Shiseido lip sheen, a $100 de-puffing eye mask, and a bottle of $96 Bergdorf Goodman “Sleep Food” pills in her bag. Yes! Completely practical! While reading through these, it’s easy to fall under the allure that all women have their lives figured out. And, in the interim, I’m left feeling a little lost, unorganized, and poor (Writer’s Note: for tough audiences, I understand these articles may be fabricated and it’s not totally crazy that some people carry $30 lipgloss in their purse, simply trying to make a cute point).
Firstly, I carry a beat up and soft Duluth Pack the size of my head and it’s heavy. I think it weighs fifteen pounds on a good day. Second of all, everything in my purse is random, repetitive, and excruciatingly…dirty? I honestly have no idea where all the dirt came from. It is heinous. If I have to dig to the basement of my purse, my fingernails look like I scaled a mountain.
Which brings me to my point! On the outside, I think I look put together. At least how I like to imagine myself appearing put together: wearing pants that are clean, paying my rent on time, feeding my cat before he decides to suffocate me during a studious Netflix binge, and working on not over-nurturing my succulents. I have a good job. I do my very best to take care of my friends and family, and I’m learning how to budget, save money, and workout on a regular basis.
But that’s just the thing. We’re all lying to each other. On the outside, we can look put together, but it’s what’s within our insides that makes us who we are. Thus why I thought it would be appropriate to share with you the inner workings of my purse. It’s not fair to say I have it together. Because I don’t. And the proof is in the purse lining.
What’s in my bag:
An old coach wallet. Its insides hold just about every credit card + punch card I’ve ever owned, business cards from random networking events where I blind myself from my anxiety with bad Pinot Grigio, three MetroCards, a Fauntleroy – Vashon Washington State Ferry ticket, a hopeful ‘Buy One Get One Free Quarter Pounder’ receipt I kept after a sad trip to McDonald’s, and a half-eaten caramel.
Yes, the half-eaten caramel was re-wrapped and put back into my wallet.
Sour Heart, a glorious book (and the current one I’m reading) by Jenny Zhang. I’m super glad it’s currently in my bag because I should plug it anyway.
Giant purple Minnesota Super Bowl LII mittens that I never wear when I need to sweep the snow off my car. Instead, they smell faintly of stale coffee because I split an entire mug on my computer keyboard and wiped it up with them.
A can opener keychain with a mysterious beer logo on both sides.
A bottle of SPF 30 Ultra Sheer sunscreen that I’ve been putting on my hands in replacement of lotion for months now and the expiration date was sometime in 2016.
Two bottles of essential oils, one for Mental Clarity and one for Stress Recovery. Their directions: “Rub 1-2 drops on palms, cup over nose and inhale deeply 5 times. Sweep remaining oil over clothing or hair” (I find this charming).
A rock from the west coast that is slightly shaped like a heart, more so shaped like a rock from the west coast.
A screw and 18 bobby pins.
Brainspin, a game my fiance and I picked up during our road trip down the west coast. We had purchased it for $5 at Powell Books in Portland and played it in a jet lag haze during dinner. This card game has been in my purse since last May.
A birthday card still in its plastic wrapping for my mother. Her birthday was in November. Mom, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry.
Two gift cards to Joe & Stan’s for $20. Joe & Stan’s is a dive bar my friends and I frequent regularly every Tuesday. We play trivia with against four other teams (on a good night) and the $20 gift card is the second place prize.
A Minnesota Craft Notes guidebook with one stamp within: Flat Earth Brewing (one of our favorites).
A Wings Financial Credit Union letter with my pin number and, on the back, detailed instructions by my fiance about how to make a balance transfer. It’s one thing I’m embarrassed to admit, but I deal very badly with money. And dammit this is bad for the patriarchy but I’m happy I am engaged to a finance guy, okay!!?
One…mitten. Not including the pair before.
A taco bell receipt that is longer than your average CVS receipt. No comment on what is within.
A hot pink doorknob (I wish I were kidding).
A set of NYPD playing cards.
Some Hot Hands hand warmers from when I worked the Super Bowl in February.
A tube of expired toothpaste.
A silicone beauty applicator.
Pennies, so many pennies. I have access to so much change. It’s all dirty. Why are all of these pennies so ridiculously disgusting??
A hair clip.
THREE MORE BOTTLE OPENERS. I really need to start considering if I have that high of a need for opening liquor in urgent circumstances.
TEN LIPSTICKS.
TEN PENS.
We can learn a lot about each other if we just take a minute to remember we all have a purse and a linen closet and a heart where nothing makes sense. We are all a little messy, unsure, and trying to get by with the simple movements of the day. Most importantly, no matter the show we’re flaunting on the outside, we all have a few dirty pennies, half-eaten caramels, and a hot pink doorknob hiding somewhere.
