Various Artists – Barbie: The Album

Mentioning the phrase “pop music” seems to illicit a lot of reactions, usually within the realms of “I love it” and “I hate it.” Most people either seem to love pop music, or at the very least, certain artists within it, or they loathe it. I wanted to preface this review with my own rather complicated history with pop, because pop music is a genre that I have a rather strange “relationship” with. I got into music during the early to mid-00s, when pop music was in an interesting place, thanks to house / dubstep music being huge, and a lot of well-established artists now were just getting started, such as Lady Gaga, Kesha, The Jonas Brothers, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and many more, but pop music was starting to become boring and bland. I was also much more into emo, pop-punk, and metalcore, although I would come to realize years later, a lot of the pop-punk that I listened to was merely pop-rock with an emo lens through it. Thirteen-year-old me thought I was the bee’s knees for listening to that edgier and darker kind of music (I did like some “classic rock” at the time, too), and I thought that was “real music,” as every preteen and teenager tends to think during adolescence. I just didn’t find anything to like when it came to “mainstream” music, but that all changed in the winter of 2012.

I remember it like yesterday, because it was one of those things you won’t forget. I was in FYE, and I had just discovered the magic of that store, but I was looking around for whatever I could find. I was always looking for anything at all, and I could spend hours in music stores, but I ended up finding a copy of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Say what you will about Jackson as a person, as well as his legacy, but Thriller is one of the best albums ever made. Without going detail into it, it’s a record that I knew about without even knowing anything about pop music. It’s one of those albums that I knew I needed to hear, so I picked it up for a good price (they always had stuff on sale, too, and that really helped my decision picking it up), and I ended up falling head over heels for it. What was interesting, however, is that, despite being released in the 1980s, it changed my perception of what pop music is, let alone what it can be. Ever since then, I became a fan of pop music, and for years after, I enjoyed plenty of pop records, such as albums from Justin Timberlake, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Harry Styles’ solo material, just to name a few artists, but listening to that record opened up a whole new world for me.

Pop music, at its core, is escapism. Whether it’s from their own lives, or wanting to live through their favorite pop singers, they want to escape. The same can be said for all kinds of music, but pop music has always been “popular” for a reason. When people think of pop music, they think of catchy, accessible, and “safe” music that doesn’t push boundaries or offend anyone. When I listened to Thriller, that misconception was completely shattered. That was when I took pop music seriously, and every now and again, you can find a great pop record, but a lot of pop music is still relatively safe, tame, and bland. Not that it’s bad, but it doesn’t push any boundaries, although that’s not the point, since it’s to sell records and make money.

I’ve found myself not as interested in pop music over the years, thanks to own tastes shifting, and pop music as a whole changing. It just hasn’t appealed to me, minus a few artists, but every once in awhile, I’ll find something I like and that “something” right now is the Barbie movie soundtrack. This film, released just a few weeks ago, is the latest topic in the pop culture zeitgeist, alongside Oppenheimer, and alongside the film, a soundtrack was released that caught my curiosity by featuring some of the most popular names in pop, such as Lizzo, Khalid, the Kid Laroi, Dua Lipa, Karol G, and Billie Eilish, although one of the big songs from this record is the remix / interpolation of “Barbie Girl” by Aqua that features Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. That’s a very stacked list of artists, let alone the whole record being produced by Mark Ronson of “Uptown Funk” fame.

Despite not listening to a lot of pop music anymore, I was curious to see how this soundtrack would pan out, especially not having seen the film yet. You can talk about this album in two ways, the first being how it holds up on its own as a soundtrack, and the second as a soundtrack after seeing the film, but because I haven’t seen the movie yet, I thought I’d first talk about it on its own, and then talk about it again once I see the movie, or write a small companion piece to along with this. Soundtracks typically are companion pieces to the movie or show they accompany, and there is often an expectation that they need to be as good, if not better, than the work they’re apart of. I won’t comment on the film, as I haven’t seen it yet, but I will say that the soundtrack works quite well on its own. The soundtrack doesn’t say anything or do anything that pushes any kind of boundary, and it does what you’d expect a Barbie soundtrack to do, which is give you an album’s worth of catchy, fun, and summery jams, and that’s okay! I’ve talked about many times how not everything needs to be deep, and this is a perfect example of that.

The Barbie soundtrack is fun, lighthearted, catchy, and enjoyable from beginning to end. A lot of the songs are quite good, if not great, and it feels like a cohesive soundtrack, instead feeling like a random soundtrack, instead feeling like a random assortment of artists. I’m curious as to how these songs work in the film, but a lot of solid tracks are here, such as “Pink” by Lizzo, “Speed Drive” by Charlie XCX, “Silver Platter” by Khalid, or the “Barbie Girl” remix I mentioned earlier. It won’t blow your mind, or ultimately change the way you think about pop music, but it’s a fun ride through the world of Barbie. There are a few standouts, such as Billie Eilish’s “What Were We Made For,” which I guarantee is going to do some numbers in the coming weeks, but there are also a few songs that don’t add anything or do anything, such as the Tame Impala song “Journey To The Real World,” which seems to have a better purpose in the movie, but it’s only a minute long, so it doesn’t really do anything or go anywhere. Haim has a song, too, entitled “Home,” and it’s a good song, but it’s nothing really that special. I enjoy listening to it, but I wouldn’t pretend it’s one of my favorites. If anything at all, listen to the soundtrack and pick out your favorites, but I don’t think anything on here is worth outright skipping, although Gayle (who’s famous for “abcdefu” from a couple of years ago) does have a weird song that interpolates “Butterfly” by Crazy Town. It’s kind of fun, but also very weird and makes no sense, especially for the Barbie movie, so I don’t know how that song fits into the overall narrative, but it’s a decent song, nonetheless.

I’m interested to see how the songs from the soundtrack fit into the film, so when I go back and listen to the soundtrack after seeing it, I can picture the songs in my head. I’m very excited to see how “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the movie, fits into the film, because that’s one of the funniest songs here. Nonetheless, this is a soundtrack that works for what it is – a catchy and fun good time. You don’t need anything more sometimes, since not everything needs to be deep, challenging, or have an underlying message to it. Sometimes a song or album can be fun, and you can enjoy it merely on a surface level. Sometimes enjoying things at face value is all you need. Pop music is at an interesting place right now because there’s nothing happening within the genre. I mean, the top three songs in the country as of this moment are country songs, so there’s no trend or overall idea that’s getting traction, unless you look at the trends of artists interpolating songs (the “Barbie Girl” remix is a perfect example of that), or the influence of nostalgia, but pop music is at a crossroads right now, so it’ll be interesting to see how this soundtrack charts and the impact that is has, especially since the film itself is doing very well at the moment. If you’re a fan of pop music, it’s worth hearing, because it has some catchy and fun summer jams on it, even if it won’t necessarily change your life.

He bared his teeth, resigned to solitude and an eludible, warranted death. He doesn’t comprehend how the other can smile in spite of it, does not know why he extends his hand with the credence that this haunted herald of death was any semblance of the man he had once known. “ you think i want your pity.” it was acrid, the incensed raving of a war ravaged man, yet, he listened, remained in spite of it. It was farcical, fatuous and perhaps, what he had needed that most. that was why he heeds the gesture, why the sharp, hibernal blue of his gaze follows khalid’s to a cluster of detritus, old, blanched stone and resilient, sprouting weeds. The sound of trespassing footfalls ricochets off the church’s crumbling foundation, igniting his senses, the sultry anticipation suffocating. Beside him, gloved fingers encompassed the shaft of his lance, primed for bisecting their uninvited guest.

Moon Enters Earth

(A short Sonic X parody)

Moon and her friends were off at an adventure, trying to stop a catastrophe from happening. Moon sensed that there’s something in the ground that starts sending off energy waves throughout the area, so she gathered her friends and head out to find and stop it from happening. When they got there in a clearing, they saw part of the earth glowing and the area felt it’s pulsing

Ice: Whoa. It’s energy feels so powerful. What could possibly be in the ground?

Luca: A secret weapon?

Khalid: A hidden base?

Moon: Whatever it is, it’s sending so many energy waves and it’s moving unpredictably. We have to make sure it’s contained and away from anyone who might get hurt

All: Right

And they went into action. Moon dove into the area the glowing was. She used both her and Talistrum, Trixx’s, powers to lift the dirt off the ground to see what it was. She used her wing to shield her eyes from the light. It dims down and she was able to see seven colorful stones. She went a little closer as her friends circled around the hole and watch her

Luca: Moon, be careful. We don’t know what those are

Ice: Luca, this is Moon we’re talking here. When it comes to mysterious gemstones that happened to be glowing so bright underneath a few layers of dirt at an open area, she knows how to be careful. Plus, knowing stones with powers in them is a Moon specialty

Khalid: I hope you’re right

Moon goes a bit closer to the unknown stones with caution. She reached out her hand to the red stone. And then with just one touch of a finger, the rest started to glow brighter again

Moon: !!! Ah, geez! Something’s happening! Everyone, get bac-!

Then a huge boom happened and everything went white, until suddenly starts faded to black with Moon on the ground and Trixx laying beside her. She detransforms out of her staff form and nuzzles Moon to wake her up

Moon: *groans* …Trixx? *sits up and pets her* Good girl *looks around* …Huh? Where is everyone? Ice? Luca? Khalid?

She stands up and looks around before a light was shown behind her. She noticed, turns around, and hears a honking noise as the light became bigger. She gasped as she jumped out of the way, but sees another one coming her way

Moon: ?!? What the?!

The scenery clears up and she sees herself in a solid road, headlights, and sees a bunch of machines with four wheels on them, and they’re everywhere

Moon: What is going on?!

Trixx formed back to her staff form and landed in Moon’s hands as she uses her wings to fly out of the way of those machines. She looks around more in the air and sees no mountains, tall buildings, more of those wheeled machines and roads, and even some small neighborhoods. She looked around in confusion, and even tries to search for her friends, but nothing. They’re nowhere to be found

Moon: …Where am I?

She then sees a sign near the side of the road that said “Welcome to Station Square”

“don’t think anyone from the clergy would be too eager to agree with you, though. seems they all trust that the goddess knows what’s fair.” his finger traces the spine of his book, and there’s only so much light that can filter underground, rendering the nuances of khalid’s expression only visible to trained eyes. and perhaps yuri’s are. so he rolls his shoulders, and, between jest and truth, brightens. “doesn’t exactly sit right with me, a god that meddles in one’s affairs. but keep that between us, will you? unleeess there's a price for your silence that i'm totally unaware of,” oh, there probably most definitely is.

The battle had been hard-won. Extremely so. Almost unfortunately so. For Yuri’s part, being forced to battle in a way that didn’t lend much of anything to his strengths or preferred methods, had meant the entire ordeal had been nothing short of a series of close calls. As ever, he had survived, and had done so in far better condition than a great deal of others. Many people had lost their lives on both sides, and many more were still suffering, waiting for either death or recovery.

Compared to wielding a sword, his ability to use magic is relatively limited, yet Yuri has already made some rounds, healing minor issues where he could, helping soothe major injuries until dedicated healers could spare their time.

Thus, he’s ended up here: a good distance away from the boundaries of their encampment, he’s sat himself on the remnants of some little old wall, his face and attire all spattered with blood and smeared with dirt and sweat, his elbows resting on his knees, head hung— he is utterly spent. There’s no expectation that anyone would join him. Least of all, he doesn’t expect to be joined by Claude.

More surprising still is the attentiveness that’s shown to him. Oddly docile and compliant, Yuri accepts it with no complaint or witty remarks, when Claude begins to look him over. Instead, his sight soon drifts, from that fleeting glance to his newfound company, to somewhere far off, somewhere he can’t actually see. For just a moment, he is elsewhere entirely.

Then, when careful fingers brush aside strands of hair that cling to each other and obscure that vacant stare, Yuri blinks a few times, his hand darting up to takes Claude’s wrist. His grip is harsh, at first, but softens when his attention focuses back here, on the man less than an arm’s length away.

❝ I’ve only got a few scrapes and bruises. ❞ It’s quiet and gentle in a way that reciprocates the careful way in which Claude had touched, though that doesn’t stop Yuri from being pragmatic, in some small way at least. ❝ Don’t waste your time looking at me, alright? I overheard people asking for you earlier. Seemed urgent. Anyway, I think you know I’ll be fine. So... run along, now. ❞ And then, just so there’s no doubting that he will be alright: ❝ I might still let you play with my hair later though, if you like. ❞

It’s late and the little adeptus is all tuckered out. His sugar high from grape juice crashed and all his silly games caught up with him. So, he is back by Khalid. “I’m tired now. Can you take me home?”

Oh dear. Seeing Xue all tuckered out may have just struck a soft spot of Khalid’s heart. Certainly enough to make him put away the pens and papers he was previously working on.

Without another word, Khalid nodded. Standing up and collecting his things, he noticed just how… Sleepy Xue was. Goodness gracious.

In an instant, Khalid had put Xue on his back, holding his legs to support him. He supposed he could take the little guy home; it isn’t as if he had anywhere else to be, after all.

Strong, smart, and humble? You're really the whole deal, huh soldier. She'd say teasingly.

Also she isn't blind, she notices the light in your eyes whenever she compliments you. The way you always look at her whenever you achieve something remarkable as if you're anticipating her praise before turning away in shyness when it comes pouring in.

Her heart can't take it, literally, she had her engine heat up multiple times because you were just so damn cute. Gale had to resort to an emergency casting of ice storm to cool her off.

She didn't learn her lesson after, the second she could speak again she immediately went to fluster you even more.

Shadowheart

Few ever who lived to tell the tale of being complimented by Shadowheart. Her praise is never earned easily.

And yet, even at your first meeting with her after the ship crash, she couldn't help but thank you and compliment you for saving her life.

You're an anomaly, she herself can't understand why she is so enamoured with you. Why praises in your name seem to slip so easily from her lips as if it was her second nature to point out your well doings.

Maybe it's the face you make after she whispers a praise in your ear, staring at her with wide eyes like a deer in headlight.

Or maybe it's how you seek her out after every battle, like a puppy looking for treats while attempting to be subtle.

She'll indulge you, even if you won't ever admit what you want put loud. After all, how can she not spoil her favourite hero?

Jaheira

Unlike what her children claim, she is more than capable of praise and giving compliments.

It's just that...well, she was never good at them. It was usually Khalid who gave the compliments freely to people like candy, so she never had to deal with the situation herself.

She tries her best, even when her compliments sound like something a football coach would tell to their team. Even when most people don't appreciate her or her seemingly plain compliments.

Yet, cub, you've always seemed to reveal in her praise. No matter how many layers of harshness and bluntness it was coated in, you'd still accept it and have the nerve to look embarrassed from how happy you are by it.

It's more than a surprise to her when you don't only seek more of her praise, but do so while acting as if her words made you redder than a tomato.

In a way, your reactions encourage her to put more effort into her vague compliments to be more honest, sincere, and touching.
