You know I've been feeling a little anxious bc Captain's werewolf form and June's shadowy version of her werewolf form look a lot a like and I always hope no one accuses either of us of design theft like it happened to me with one of my old characters, though I made his werewolf form in like 2020. June is cool as hell (if not cooler) I wouldn't want someone to be a jerk about it. Maybe I should draw them together shaking hands as a preventive measure lol

Heya! I hope this is ok to post but please don't worry about it! June's design is based off of other (mostly animated) werewolf designs I liked, but was given meaning through her story and the reason as to /why/ her form looks a certain way.

It's not that she's just shadowy, it's an intentional visual representation of black trauma. There's are cultural and social stigmas of Black people being systematically denied access to mental health resources or being told that they're just "lazy" or "crazy" or "faking it". June's form is altered by her mental/emotional state, it's what she /believes/ she is due to her past trauma and her story is, in part, learning deal with her trauma in a healthy way.

June's form is also based on the lesser known theories that The Beast of Gévaudan (which June is related to via her lycan lineage) was either a product of mass hysteria from the high number of wolf attacks in the region or was potentially a serial killer. The way the beast is often described (black fur, red lips, white/yellowed eyes and teeth) is similar to racist depictions of Black people in the past. I used this as a basis for designing her form. It's the intention and her story that's important, followed by visuals that are found within the werewolf genre and outside of it.

I'm a little too tired to go more in-depth but I'll leave this quote from the Jim Crow museum:

The mission of the Jim Crow Museum is straightforward: use items of intolerance to teach tolerance. We examine the historical patterns of race relations and the origins and consequences of racist depictions. The aim is to engage visitors in open and honest dialogues about this country's racial history...The Jim Crow Museum is founded on the belief that open, honest, even painful discussions about race are necessary to avoid yesterday's mistakes.

June's story is about racism. It's about intolerance towards black queer folk. It's about how Black people (especially black women) have to suffer under a system that denies them mental health resources, resulting in many Black people turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Her design was me intentionally marrying old werewolf motifs with a different perspective on the werewolf genre (since even today is it still mostly a white space). There's a stark difference to me when someone comes up with a similar design independently vs when someone is actively lifting direct inspiration from my work and twisting the meaning in the process.

I have only written TMFU (2015) fanfiction this year, so I'm gonna post my favorite lines from every fic I've written this year! Buckle up, this is gonna be a long one 😅

"It Takes Three to Tango" - July 5th

But Solo couldn't give two shits about what up top had to say, even if it cost him his freedom. All that mattered was that Illya was safe. The thought him like a bullet to the stomach. All that mattered….was that Illya was safe. Oh. That can't be good.

"As Sharp and Serious as a Pistol in the Eye" - July 7th

He'd never been called beautiful before. Strong, inhuman, psychotic, skilled, a machine. He'd been called all of them. Maybe it was that. Maybe it was the anger in his eyes, or the heaviness in his shoulders. Maybe people were scared of him. Maybe it was the scar from his training that marked his temple. Whatever the reason, no one saw Illya as anything other than a monster. Then came along Napoleon Solo, who called him beautiful. And Gaby Teller, who wrestled with him without an ounce of fear. For the first time in his life, he felt like a person. A living, breathing human being with emotions and needs and wants.

The pure rage on Illya's face as he pulled away to retrieve Rudi was spectacular. The fire that burned in his eyes could light up half of Europe. Solo thought maybe if he asked, Illya would do just that.

"A Rather Frightening Thing" - July 15th

"Illya, I know you don't like what I'm about to say, but it's not a bad thing," Solo took a deep breath and swallowed the lump in his throat. "You are more than capable of softness. Your teeth are sharp, but you don't use them. When I look at you, look at your hands…" he lifted Illya's hand and pressed their palms together, "I don't see the blood you claim they're stained with. I just see you."

"I Am Scard of Nothing" - July 15th

He looked towards the closed door. His fingers tapped out an attempt at a calming rhythm. At some point, the soft rustle of skin on fabric mutated into a violent knocking on the door that shook the tiny cottage. Illya drew his knees up to his chest and covered his ears with his palms, but that only made things worse. Shaking, he pulled the gun from his nightstand and silently moved towards the door. The knocking echoed in his head. He watched his trembling hand reach for the knob and turn, the scrape of metal on metal making him cringe. Whatever, whoever, was out there would certainly know he was about to open the door.

"Grounded and Giving and Darkening Scorn" - July 23

At six o'clock on the dot, Waverly knocked on their door with an expensive-looking bottle of champagne. Gaby welcomed him in and invited him to the kitchen, where dinner was almost ready. Illya hovered behind Solo with one hand on his waist, and the other trying desperately to steal a bite, only to be thwarted by the gentle whack of a wooden spoon (said spoon was the designated whacking spoon; Solo always practiced culinary etiquette).

"I'd Block The Sun (If You Want It Done" - August 4th

Lights flashed and flickered wildly. The whole vessel shook like an earthquake, and loud, screeching beeps sent pain scoring through his head. Through the dangling oxygen masks, Illya clawed his way to Gaby, clutching her to his chest. Disoriented, he searched for Solo, using the hand that wasn't desperately holding Gaby to keep his balance. Finally he found him, bracing himself against the wall of the plane. The cool, collected confidence Illya had gotten used to seeing was gone, replaced by a sheer terror that made Illya's heart stick in his throat. He stretched out his hand. If only I could reach him, I could hold him too. Solo's shaking hand shot out, but just as their fingers brushed, everything went black.

"The End Is All I Can See (And It Scares The Hell Out Of Me)" - August 8th

"Spending the night?" He managed to slur out, somehow avoiding the declaration of love floating on his tongue.

"All Eyes On Me (Your Eyes On Me)" - August 11th

"Patience is a virtue, my love. Sit, it'll be done soon." Patience. What a word. What an incredible thing to have the privilege to experience. Illya hoped he could spend the rest of his life with patience. Wouldn't that be something?

"In The Moonlight, We Let It Go" - August 12th

Illya had lost all the anger in his face. It was replaced by a mix of awe and love, like he couldn't believe Gaby was showing him affection so freely. The splotches of pink across their faces were beautifully pastel in the cold light of the pool, and organic silvery shapes rippled across their skin. Solo felt something inside of him click into place. This felt so right. It felt like home. They felt like home.

"I Want To Fade Away With You" - August 12th

"I told you they would do this," Gaby's annoyed voice came from their left. She marched through the fallen leaves, looking dashing in her tact gear, and glared down at them. "Get up, you melodramatic assholes. You're out."

"Lost On You" - August 19th

Dinner was lovely as always, but there was something particularly special about this one. It felt like a successfully smuggled painting. Or the glow he experienced after relieving some socialite of a diamond studded piece of jewelry. Like the last piece of a puzzle clicking into place, or a completed circuit of electricity, or, hell, going back to his days as an altar boy, it felt like the Holy fucking Trinity. Pride, and love, and devotion, and a silent promise to work on themselves and each other, together. Family, Solo realized that night, curled against Illya's chest, drifting away to the sound of his steady heartbeat and the brush of Gaby's arm against his own. It felt like family.

"Nothin' But The Water And The Sunrise Now" - August 22nd

Parking on the side of the road, Solo gathered the flowers and began the trek into the woods yet again. As he approached the house, he could almost feel himself shrinking down, his shoes filling the tiny footprints no longer visible in the mud. A voice in the back of his head, sounding suspiciously like a seven year old, begged him to turn around and forget about this place again. Not this time, Napoleon.

"Is That The Kinda Way To Face The Burning Heat?" - August 25th

There would be a lovely bruise where Illya's thumb dug into the soft skin there. Solo wouldn't mind if Illya bruised the rest of him. His lover might be a sadist, but Solo was finding that he was, himself, a masochist.

Sanders had his claws in Solo's neck just as deep as Oleg's in his own.

As much as he kicked and thrashed and tread, the crests of the waves would send more water into his mouth and nose, burning with salinity. Any mouthful of air was stolen by the sea, but even when his breathing sounded like the crackling of a roaring fire, he still wouldn't die. A perpetual state of suffocation with all of the coughing and shivering and aching and none of the release.

"C'mere," the shifting of fabric indicated Illya rolling to face him. Solo obeyed, letting Illya pull him into a sleepy kiss. "Can't sleep without you here," he confessed, eyes closed against the vulnerability.

OH MY GOD I WAS GONNA AFTER THE TRAILER BUT I FORGOT. OPINIONS INCOMING

(below the cut bc to nobody's surprise it got long as fuck)

first and foremost! focalors!! furina! she looks SO FUN. huuuuuge contrast to nahida of the previous arc but i'm into it! i love her irreverent attitude, not *really* taking justice seriously, probably mostly oblivious to the problems of the people... if sumeru writing quality holds that arc is gonna be DELICIOUS. so excited for this contrast! (that was set up LAST YEAR when neuvilette was nahida's drip quote talking about how serious she was comparion to a "certain someone" being prone to hysterics....)! and speaking of neuvilette! i'm pretty sure he's nonhuman, maybe an oceanid, and i REALLY want him to be an ally of the previous hydro archon who's trying to keep furina in check! i think that could be SUPER interesting.

other characters: did not give a single fuck about wriothesley until they gave him a fun potential dynamic with adorable sigewinne and now I Love Him (my weakness is dadguys lol), Did Not expect a third sibling for lyney+lynette but i love all three of them! lynette in particular seems like she'll hit all my buttons character-wise, so i'm super interested to see what she's like and how they're gonna play the fatui/(probably) house of hearth connection. im expecting gendou ringo 2: more exciting and i'm Very delighted about it, i loved that quest!! navia and chlorinde look super interesting as well - i'm REALLY hoping they add gun as a new weapon type that would be SO FUN and the schneznayan cast would super benefit from that in the future..

so far the plot looks super cool too! from what i can tell, there are some super interesting parallels being set up regarding illusion/truth (the magic show/the lie behind it, the spectacle of trial/the lack of justice resulting from it, the pure waters/the pollution corrupting it, the glamorous society/the suffering that lies beneath) and i LOVE Themes and Motifs so IM HYPED FOR THAT! hoping they knock it out of the park with the writing again!! designs all look super solid so far tho im kind of disappointed about some freminet concepts that did not last...

if i had to choose one thing im most excited for tho... there's rumors of a hexenzirkel character in fontaine and i'm a longtime hexenzirkel fan so i REALLY REALLY want that to be true i Love the hexenzirkel and they've been getting more story relevance recently so i think fontaine would be a great place for them to enter the main plot!!

gameplay-wise: obvi we'll have to wait for more info to come out, but looks super promising! super hyped about underwater exploration, the setting design leaks i've seen knock it out of the park as always, i'm sure they'll have some super fun world quests and puzzles for us to scratch our heads over - i've got 0 doubts it'll be fantastic in that design lol. will it top sumeru's rainforest in sheer fun? we'll see but i'm feeling optimistic! my only criticism is that it's right above the newest desert expansion and there's a giant hole in the map which Bothers Me but... historically we can expect 4 map expansions total in 4.x so i'm sure that will be temporary.... (i hope so at least!)

i definitely have more thoughts but this is all the big stuff i could think of... maybe i'll post a full analysis/crumbs i noticed of the teaser, but overall- SUPER excited, i think the story is heading in a good direction, and i'm ready for it to be 4.0 already!!!!

Star Wars (1977) #02: Six Against the Galaxy

Roy Thomas, May 10 1977

What's not to love about this cover? Obi-Wan's red (pink?) "lightsabre". Luke straight up shooting a guy. The colors. The poses. The creatures. The mug (do seedy bars serve drinks in mugs??). And of course, "LUKE SKYWALKER STRIKES BACK!"

The second page graces us with a majestic unconscious Luke, who even looks like a teen for once:

The scene in Ben's home - rather uncharitably referred to as a hovel by the narration - plays out in a different order of events from the final film - first Leia's message, then a discussion of Ben's past. I'm actually not sure why they ended up switching them - Artoo's message seems like the obvious place to start a conversation and Leia's mention of Ben's clone wars history is a good segue into the rest of the revelations.

The contents of the message are also somewhat different from the movie, and omit or change quite a bit from the fourth draft of the screenplay as well:

So in this version, Bail's name is still Antillies (not even Antilles) and Ben served the Old Republic, not him specifically as she says in the film. In the script the Rebellion is also explicitly referred to as the Alliance to restore the Republic (unlike the films, which use the terms Rebel Alliance and Rebellion). I don't really know what to make of Ben being called both a general and commander in the same context but whatever. Interesting that the iconic line "you're my only hope" is a later change - still, there is some inconsistency with the first issue:

I find it kinda funny how "the Force" is always in quotation marks. No version of the screenplay I've seen does this so I'll just assume it's all Mr. Thomas.

The discovery of the destroyed sandcrawler plays out like in the film. Afterwards we get Luke shouting for Aunt Beru and Uncle Ben:

Roy Thomas did write Spider-Man comics and it's cute so I'll forgive it. Let's say that Luke is in a lot of distress and just received lots of weird information about his heritage and maybe his comic version sees Ben as more of an uncle figure than Owen at this point idk

I'll also highlight this panel just because Luke's pretty in it:

In the cantina we finally get the fight promised by the cover. The alien who seems to have a problem with Luke (I don't want to call the character Ponda Baba as he lacks both the soulfull eyes and mandibles) says his line from the script (which is apparently still an actual quote as seen in the novelization, though I don't see how it relates to what is said/growled in the movie. Maybe Aqualish or whatever language is spoken here just has a unique transcribing system I guess). The rest of his lines seem to originate in this comic though. I also enjoy the "we have the death sentence on 12 systems", which differs from both the fourth draft and final film. They're besties ❤.

Yeah Ben just bisected those two. Alright.

Next, Chewbacca makes his appearance! I'm not sure why the narration feels the need to insult his looks though.

The bartender seems to be less enthusiastic about his snitching than in the film or script. The line interesting me here is the one about Han obviously not having a lightsaber - why is that obvious? Sure he's a loser but that's just mean. And why couldn't Chewie be the one slicing people up.

This might be a longshot but I've been fascinated by the third draft and the idea that "laser-swords" are much more common. Maybe this scene is a holdover from that?

Next we get the Greedo scene. His death is beautiful (the colors? the shading? the exploding lines? the pose?) and the fact that Han has his blaster in full view seems to imply he's just an insanely quick draw. 10/10 no notes.

Han's next scene is not quite as cool - in fact, it's the horrible deleted Jabba scene that never should have existed. I'll take it though, just for the awful early Jabba design.

I mean just looks at this yellow otter-walrus thing with terrible fashion sense. I'm pretty sure it's physically impossible to feel threatened by him.

I also greatly enjoy this interpretation of star destroyers. Why can't they fly like this in the films...

The banter inside the ship is pretty much word for word movie dialogue. I do love this 3PO pose:

And the final panel is honestly amazing!

Though that ship definitely needs greebling.

Closing remarks: this issue is kind of light on weird He-Man Luke. His incredible expressions make up for it though.

Hey Blair I forget if you've been asked this but do you have any tattoos/piercings/body mods? I feel like you're the kind of person who would totally dye their hair, but maybe that's just because I always envision you as the purple cat 😂

As well you should! Ahaha, nah, but in all reality, everyone knows I'm a scruffy black cat, actually! Just picture me curled up on the keyboard, snoozing until the Tumblr notification sound effect plays, waking me up so I begin to bap at the keyboard...man, if I could draw, I would so turn that into an animation and like, use that as the introduction for videos on a youtube channel or something...god, this must be the ADHD brain. Where was I?

I've actually never dyed my hair, but I've considered dying it blue in the past, mainly just because I like blue and I thought it would be cool. I mean, whatever, it's just hair. It grows back, right? So if I get tired of it I can just wait it out. For the longest time, I had no piercings, but as of now, I do have a single ear piercing. I just did it on a whim one day over the summer. I only got the one, though. I figured that would look cooler. It's what Kingsley Shacklebolt and Bill Weasley did, can't go wrong with that.

No tattoos. My pain tolerance is less than zero, so I most likely won't ever get any, but part of me really wants to get one, actually. I feel like I'd never have the nerve to go through with it, and even if I did, I'd flinch away the moment the needle started it's work. That's just me. But if I was to get a tattoo, I've considered a few different designs. It would be something simple and small, like on my arm, probably. I thought about something from a story that means a lot to me, possibly Undertale. I thought about a general quote about kindness, or maybe a quote from "Feed The Birds." But I'm also big into symbols, and one that I'm attracted to is the Ouroboros. I think snakes are highly underrated and much like raccoons, get a bad rap. Plus I love the symbolism of how everything ends, but everything also begins again anew. It's all about the cycles. (Kind of the whole message of Doctor Who, now that I think about it.)

Honestly, I don't know. I think I give them in all of their forms, but as for receiving, I think affirmation is what does it for me. Might be physical contact though, I do love hugs.

Probably a drama, I did like How to Get Away With Murder, even if I only got through the first season and a bit. Designated Survivor was awesome too.

Spain, for one. I don't know what it is about the place, but it has a charm about it for me. Maybe it's the weather. Aside from that, Greece and Italy would be awesome. I'm a little bit of a mythology nerd, so seeing all of the temples and wonders built for these ancient gods sounds like an awesome experience. If I could choose more, Norway and Iceland are both incredibly beautiful places, and I do kind of prefer the cold. Also, I've always wanted to see the aurora borealis in person.

Ooph, this one is difficult. There are a lot of great scents out there. Vanilla's a long-standing favorite, I remember once bringing a bottle of it to school once to show to my friends. Cinnamon rolls smell delicious, as does that smell from the candles we always used to buy. It might've been sandalwood, but I've never been quite sure. Also, there's this one perfume my mom's worn for as long as I can remember - it's a little too sharp to be entirely pleasant, but it's flowery, and nostalgic for me.

"City of Angels" by Em Beihold. She also wrote the trending songs "Numb Little Bug" - the "Do you ever get a little bit tired of life" one - and dueted "Until I Found You" with Stephen Sanchez. I think her songs "Too Precious" and "12345" are also really good.

Stalker. But seriously, probably one of the places listed in #9, or back home, as I have some stuff to do there.

Vanilla. Most pure chocolate ice creams have a bad aftertaste.

Donuts. I don't know what it is about cake, but I've never seemed to like it all that much, even the good ones. It is, honestly, my least favorite dessert that I'll actually eat - I even like eclairs, which are literally just pastry around messy whipped cream that gets everywhere, more than cake. I particularly hate it with that weird gel writing on it. Just...urgh. Donuts are chill tho, and I'll never turn down a solid frosted with sprinkles or Boston Creme.

Black. It's reliable, doesn't stain easily, works well in formal outfits, doesn't show sweat stains, and works on most complexions. Also, I never really wear much color regardless. I would miss that one blue dress shirt I really like - it's comfy as hell.

Haven't read one in ages, despite my massive TBR, but off the top of my head, probably "With great power comes great need to take a nap," by Nico di Angelo from PJO, if only because of how ridiculous yet true it is.

If I can't handle myself In a fight, I'm not subjecting any of y'all to that.

Ice cream. It's more reliable and easily accessible for me, and frankly, cotton candy is too dry as a dessert.

A famous engineer, hopefully. Being an author would be cool, too.

I do not have pet peeves, I am a pet peeve.

Basic Bitch. I suck at fashion and aesthetics and currently have neither the desire nor the capability to improve. My wardrobe is composed entirely of thin shorts, tracksuit pants, and t-shirts, with a singular formal suit. Might try to start painting my nails soon, see how that goes.

As prideful as it may sound, my intelligence. I don't have much street sense, to say the least, but I have a good factual memory, am good at logic puzzles, and am a quick reader, and I'm rather proud of that.

Saturday. Nothing to occupy that day, nor the day after. It's excellent. My favorite weekday? Probably Thursday. Dunno why, it just vibes the best.

I am SUCH a bad night owl. I don't even know why, I always regret it in the mornings too. I guess it's just kinda freeing, not having the expectations.

Journal Dump!

Finals ended over a week ago for me, but somehow I'm still feeling the effects (honestly, they're only getting worse). I think about writing for Tumblr a lot--it brings me so much joy!--but fatigue and muscle pain are reaching absolutely ridiculous levels for me, making writing difficult. I think this is because when I get started writing, I feel so wonderful and at peace that I can't imagine stopping, leading to levels of exertion that really aren't good for me. But I also really want to write, so I'm trying to be more careful about that :)

So for today, I'm just going to share some stuff I've jotted down in my personal Discord server over the past few weeks, mostly in my now-just-vents channel, which I use as a diary that I just update whenever I feel like it. I thought these were kind of cool when I looked back at them, so I hope you'll enjoy :)

1. TBL Quotes

So I've mentioned that I'm an avid reader of TheBiasList before, and I'm sure other fans will recognize that in certain elements of my style. I always love Best Of lists, and Nick's Best Songs of 2022 list featured some particulary lovely writing. Nick's writing always gets the job done, but these sentences made me more emotional than they had any right to, which was unexpected and very welcome!

Maybe Forever 1 isn’t fireworks after all. Maybe it’s a confetti drop, flanked by confetti cannons. Whatever the case, there’s a lot to sweep up after the song has finished. Specks of multicolored paper, damp with tears of resilience and joy.

2. Reader Things

i highlight and sticky-note, yet rarely look back at the stickies i leave in books except to take them out. i suppose i annotate like the person i wish to be, one who combs through pages of annotations for his reading journal, which is full of pretty, aesthetic handwriting.

3. When Life Becomes Livable (cw suicidal ideation & fantasies)

and that's what i'm used to, isn't it? knowing that this can't last long, but that nothing can so i might as well just take what i can get, no matter the cost, before the curtains come down. i'm used to watching for the end, eagle-eyed. i'm used to resigning myself to all that is impossible to live with, all that makes me want to walk forever into the sea. i'm not used to security or livability, so i watch for the end and assume i will not live, even as it begins to dawn on me that i may.

This was in response to an article I don't have the strength to find, one of those ones about policies that will forcefully out kids to their parents if they disclose their identites at school... For someone as frequently suicidal as myself, this couple of sentences surprised me as I wrote them. But I keep rereading them, and they keep feeling so, so true. It's the new meds, maybe :)

5. Reflections on Life without Religion

But I have a reason to live and progress and reach for those holy moments where life, my own and that of others, feels valuable in a way that rings deep in my chest. I do it all for one who loves and admires and, I dare say, designed me--my past self. Intelligent design? Not always, but sometimes. Certainly sometimes. I do it for her.

Big Bad Con 2022 and Progress

(This post is a slightly modified excerpt from my latest newsletter, which you can subscribe to at https://perfect-hole.ghost.io/)

I made a trip to San Francisco for Big Bad Con 2022 at the end of October, thanks to their POC Scholarship programme. I had a really great time there meeting a whole bunch of cool people, including people who I've played games with online and fellow game designers from all over the world, playing some games (like Meanwhile, in the subway..., pictured), and also kinda last-minute filling in on a panel about the politics of violence.

One of the truisms of the games industries, be it board games, card games, videogames or role playing games, is that access to "the right networks" can really help a designer/artist/creator's chances at "progressing" in the industry. Traditionally, one of the biggest concentrations of these networks are during major games conventions, which means that being able to attend one or more of these conventions confers a greater chance of accessing these networks. Social media has changed a lot of those dynamics, not only by providing other avenues to access and maintain those networks, but also by highlighting just how malnourished those networks have been because they ended up excluding a whole spectrum of people who for reasons of distance, resources, prejudice and geopolitics were not able to make their way to these loci of connections.

Big Bad Con's POC Scholarship aims to address this lack by providing resources and opportunity to those who have not previously been able to access these networks. And it aims to make up for all that lost time by taking direct steps to connect these disparate networks together through programmes like the POC Meet and Greet, where diverse creators and those looking to work with them are encouraged to connect. It's a truly commendable effort, and has already borne various fruit. I am really, really thankful that the POC Programming team have this vision and drive, and have expended so much effort and care to make this work, as I and many others benefit from it.

One of the questions that came up for me multiple times in the lead up to and during the convention, was what does "progress" look like for me? In preparation for the POC Meet and Greet, we were asked about what types of opportunities we were looking for; during the POC Dinner, the programming team talked about their hopes for the future of the industry; chatting with other POC Scholars, we sometimes talked about what we were hoping to do or make after the convention. I saw so many different visions of "progress".

I used the scare quotes around "the right networks" and "progressing" in the industry a few paragraphs up, because I know that looks very different to different people. That's one of the outcomes of diversifying your networks: you'll get a diversity of aims and approaches. I know some people want to work on their dream properties, or get their work published with an established publisher, or build their own self-publishing outfit, or make something that would finally get out something they've wanted to express for a long time. All with their different goals and views on progress. What, then, is mine?

Sure, in the short term I am very happy to look for help in getting Spectres of Brocken finished and out to people, but what more do I want to do? What's my "five-year plan"? I hadn't really thought about it, to be honest. I've always just done the next thing that I wanted to do.

While I've been thinking about this, Twitter looked to be imploding, so I decided to look back on some of the things I had written about game design and try and salvage them in case the site disappeared. It was pretty interesting to see how some of my thoughts have changed over time, and what seemed to stay the same throughout. I figured, then, if I can't articulate a clear plan for my future in game design, maybe I could at least figure out my principles and work from there.

Well, what do you know? Turns out I had already done this, kinda. I had written up a manifesto of sorts this year, and the final two statements there could be neatly re-purposed into a vision of progress:

I want to be as honest as I can for as long as I can with as many people as I can

I want to help others make games the way they want to make them, if they would have my help, the same way others have helped me

Is it that pat, that easy? Maybe. Thanks, past me, I guess.

But wait a minute, how do you turn those vague statements up there into actionable steps? How do you turn vision into direction? Boy, I sometimes really am annoyed that I have a background in project planning because I can't just rattle off points from some "manifesto" and call it a day. So here, for me, for now, this is how I am measuring my progress in game design:

Make tangible steps to be able to make games where I am happy with the creative direction - this means working on self-publishing games sure, but also building up and maintaining resources such that I can choose what projects I commit to (having a steady source of income to keep up with creative work, having alternate sources of income that still allows enough time for game design, building up trust with collaborators so I can be open about any issues I might have, finding collaborators that I can trust)

Make tangible steps to help build a strong cohort of designers with my peers - this means maintaining and improving on stuff like Playtest Zero, helping out with resources when I'm able, passing on any opportunities or advantages that might come my way. This isn't just some altruistic rah-rah "we're all in this together" feel-good statement. It's selfish in a way, because I truly believe that having a strong peer group will make me a better designer as well. I want to get good feedback in playtests, I want to have a deep pool of potential collaborators, I want design colleagues who will challenge me and encourage me, and I think the best way to have that is to build that together (so there's sunk-cost fallacy haha).

You call yourself a menace, yet all you have done is given me an excuse to talk about my THREE FAVORITE BOYS.

Warden Wrath

First impression

It went something like, and I quote, "Hough. Now that's a good design." Like, I saw the plague doctor mask and he met most, if not all, of my standards. His voice just sealed the deal for me.

Impression now

I've used the phrase "Beefy Rules Dad" to describe him a couple times, so I think it's apt to use now. I still love him, I think he's a bit underutilized, and feel bad that the cards cast him as a level one villain.

Favorite moment

"You've always evaded our capture, you were always the one that got away. I found that alluring." He actually sounds genuine at the first part, and Luz's disgusted reaction to the second always makes me chuckle.

Idea for a story

I want to see him and Eda interact. Not in a fight setting or attempted-arrest kind of way, just a semi-awkward conversation between two people. Maybe they talk a little bit about being forcibly transformed (I found her "Wrath? You still in there, buddy?" unnecessarily kind).

Unpopular opinion

I'd say this is "unpopular" just by the fact that I have never seen it anywhere before, but you will pry the idea that he is a great dad from my cold, dead hands after sentient life has developed on my corpse.

Favorite relationship

I cannot get over how supportive his guards were in the first episode, so the notion of this weird relationship with them that includes "boss and subordinates" and "they will give him relationship advice and cheer him on when the time comes" is pretty stellar.

Favorite headcanon

You ended up being right about this, but Wrath being a control freak! It adds a lot to the base of "imposing warden" in a way that just scratches my brain.

Belos (HOOH BOY):

First impression

Captivated. Entranced. Utterly fascinated by this guy. Back in season one, when we knew literally nothing about him, this air of mystery coupled with an insanely cool aesthetic (which I could write a whole separate post about) just drew me in instantly. I've been a villain enjoyer my whole life, and now is no exception.

Impression now

He is one of the few characters that I would refer to as "blorbo from my shows". I still have the same level of fascination, but it's gone from a kind of "mystery novel reader chortling and going along with the plot" to a "crazed conspiracy theorist who has covered the walls in paper and red string" thing. My love for him has only grown. I am the living embodiment of this video.

Favorite moment

It's a tie. Number 1 is "Okay. I'll play." because come ON. WHAT a way to kick off a boss fight in the season finale, no less! He isn't angry that Luz has been disrupting his plans, or caught off guard by her in any way, he sounds amused by her threat. That, and the fact that it's coupled with him melting and rearranging himself behind her to teleport. Number 2 is his face reveal and subsequent conversation with Hunter. I love it because it's exactly the opposite of the terrifying Emperor we saw fight Luz. He reminisces fondly about the Human Realm, even lightly jokes with Hunter, all while that music box tune plays in the background. Man, I just... the RANGE-

Idea for a story

Where do I even start with this one. I've definitely been on a Brothers Wittebane kick recently, so a flashback into their childhood rife with foreshadowing about their future would do nicely. Like several subsequent punches to the stomach.

Unpopular opinion

I think that his mental state is way worse than anybody seems to think. Like, yes, on the surface and aside from the curse, he's the picture of a calm, collected leader with a definitive plan, but I really think upwards of four hundred years of isolation and God knows what else has him a little crazier than anybody seems to suspect. I can't imagine also having Hunter around would do him much good, as he grows to look more and more like the brother that abandoned Philip so many years ago.

Favorite relationship

You know. You know damn well.

Favorite headcanon

Although it's wonderfully angsty, I like that headcanon of yours that he picks and tears at his wood-rot. It kind of seems like just the unnerving, neurotic thing that would lie under such a composed surface.

So quick thing about Maya and the Three

SPOILERS AHEAD BTW

Aside from two minor issues there was only one major thing that's bothered me about the show

And it's these three and how the show/Jorge Gutierrez "utilized" them.

Acat and the Skele-twins are, in my personal opinion, the most underused Goddesses in this show.

Let me explain.

Acat is delegated to an off-handed love interest to Zatz in a relationship that does nothing to the plot (and then gets killed off and seemingly forgotten about.

Heres how I'd have fixed Acat:

There are better ways they could've used them (maybe have Acat flirt with Zatz, alluding to her interest in him idk anything other than their "relationship" in the film)

Acat and Zatz being together does nothing for the plot and, if you remove that one detail, the plot would remain the same.

As for Bone and Skull:

They just really annoy me because it feels like Gutierrez just didn't know what to do for anymore God's and made another set of twins.

Hura and Can are actually intimidating, prove to be challenging for the main group, and are integral to the actual plot. Bone and Skull are just kinda there honestly?

Like compared to Xtabay and Cipactli they're not as interesting physically just shorter versions of the Adolita Cousins from the Book of Life

And they aren't thematically relevant either, since their only notable feat is that they belittle Maya and threaten to steal the gifts left behind by her brothers (and after one dies the other is left as a joke character and then killed off by Miclan)

Comapred to Xtabay who uses their fears against the characters and actively confronts Picchus morals/past while Cipactli becomes an ally alongside her husband Cabrakan.

You wanna who would've been cool to see as a Goddess instead of these two?

I've seen some people complain about how alot of the women in Maya don't have as much creativity behind them as the male characters do, eith some exceptions. But are we really going to ignore this chick who i haven't seen alot of people talk about?

Scorpion Warrior is the one who killed Picchus family/entire village.

And she is by far my favorite secondary character in the film and I stand by this.

But pray tell, why is she my favorite? Well how about a list of reasons:

Has arguably the most unique design for a female besides Lady Micte.

Is responsible for what is one of the saddest character origins in the whole series.

Scorpions are always a plus.

So yes I do in fact thoroughly enjoy this character, but why do I think she should've been a Goddess?

She has arguably more presence then Bone and Skull, she has a much more unique design and is by far more standout than the Skele-Twins, and is arguably more intimidating than most the other female gods.

Adding on to that she could have added more fun banter with other Gods and Goddesses (I imagine her having been very loyal to Miclan)

But now you may ask, "How would one character fill the void left by 2 others?"

Simple:

Combine the Skele-Twins

You can still have a Goddess of Theivery you don't need to have 2 of them; you can even keep the pirate theme and have the one Goddess be something like "Madame Refelar, Goddess of Theives" (Refelar being a Spanish word for Steal) don't quote me on that I haven't done Spanish in years that's a ruff example

And if you wanted to you could even keep the sibling dynamic between the Goddess of Theives and (in concept) a Goddess of Scorpions.

Yes it's a sibling dynamic, but you don't have another generic twin gimmick like with Bone and Skull or Hura and Can.

One sister is a Thief, and the other is a Backstabber (Scorpion Warrior directly quotes the story of the Frog and the Scorpion even)

As far as a name goes for Scorpion Warrior maybe Alacrán again a ruff example don't kill me for my Spanish if it's bad

Also just something that I think would've been cool to see, in the first all out battle between Mayas group and the Gods, have Alacrán lead them into battle alongside Chivo; and while they fight have Alacrán battle Picchu and have Xtabay and Relefar fight Maya since that thematically makes more sense.

Picchu confronting his demons in the form of Alacrán doesn't change his actual fight when comapred to the film as it can still end the same way.

And when Maya fights with Xtabay and Refelar they can have Xtabay uses her illusions to belittle Maya into blaming herself for her brothers death, while Refelar attacks her from the shadows.

And come the end of the fight when they're united against the Gods have Maya still kill a God, but have it be Refelar (it'll play out like when she killed the one twin)

Alacrán can be enraged, swearing vengeance on Maya just like the other twin did in the original scene.

And when the climax comes pit her against the Puma Army in place of the remaining Skele-Twin (keep that comment about one at a time or all at once, and add a side remark about Picchu and how she'll enjoy destroying the rest of the Puma people like they did)

The relationship with the Scorpion Warrior and Picchu, and possibly the Scorpion Warrior being a Goddess herself could've made for a great addition to the story.

I've been thinking a lot about Jenny's character and sexuality lately since I'm in the middle of rewatching the show. I totally agree that she's attracted to women and most times she pursues guys it's mainly to increase social status and not because of genuine interest. Nate always felt different to me, though. Like, the two times she really pursues him is in season 2, when she's being homeschooled and trying to make it as a designer, and the end of season 3, which is after the whole Damien drama and she's just looking for someone who cares about her and respects her (I know you said once that it doesn't even feel romantic here, which I also agree with, poor girl just needs a connection). I do really see how it can be interrupted as comphet, though. Like she feels like she's supposed to be attracted to Nate because who wouldn't be?

I think the reason why I lean the other way is probably just projection. Jenny's been my favourite GG character since I first watched the show when I was 12, partly because I relate a lot to her, and since I'm bisexual... Add that plus the fact that I totally have had a crush on Nate and of course I'm gonna ship them. I've been relating to Jenny even more this time around cause I dropped out of school this year, so her season 2 arc really hit close to me. So this made my jenate feelings come back tenfold and also made me that much madder at Rufus, lol. I just wanted to go through the screen and shake his shoulders like "There are other paths than the one you want your daughter to have, not everyone has to go through life like society expects you to let your daughter carve out her own unconventional path you fucking idiot!" Luckily my parents have been way more supportive.

Mainly I just see Jenny as bi with a strong lean towards women, but I like to think about lesbian Jenny, too. It wouldn't exactly be the first time I had contradicting headcanons.

I don't know I just think it's really cool that different people can have such different interpretations of the same character. I think that's what's so interesting about fiction, to see how we view things differently depending on how we view and relate to things based on our own experiences. Tumblr can be so focused on hating people who disagree with you, but I like following people with different opinions, it helps me understand people better.

Yeah, I'm glad you tagged me!! back in November, some anons were mean to me about shipping Jenate (me??? who literally does not even - anyway) and ever since then I've been trying extra to ensure that Jenate shippers feel welcome on my blog - you may already know this, because I've brought it up before, but I'm saying it here to let you know that every time you tag me in your Jenate edits I get so happy that you're sharing something you're so passionate about with me!! I'm also a big believer of like........ making the content you want to see (a big part of why I even learnt to gif is because nobody was giffing Dan & Nate, and I was like...... that's the content I need, so if it's not already existing, I'm gonna make it happen!) so regardless of my feelings it's always so cool to see the way you conceptualise JN + their feelings re: each other, and your choice of scenes + lyrics (??? I'm not actually familiar with where you got the words for your edits, they're likely songs I haven't heard, haha) is just so interesting & good!

OH my full Jenny & Nate feelings are a lot more complicated than just comphet on Jenny's part. I feel like..... neither of them was romantically/sexually into each other? and that is kind of the appeal to me? I've always interpreted Nate's interest in Jenny during the s2 arc as sort of like - everything in his life is so unstable and undetermined, and here is Jenny who is so clear on who she is and what she wants, and he admires and respects that, and he wants to be there for her and support her, so when she kisses him he just sort of lets her take their dynamic wherever she wants to? that is very much the vibe I got. You already know how I feel about lesbian Jenny, I mean, you quoted my meta right back at me :'))

but I DO agree with you that Nate is different from the other guys to Jenny. JN have this really specific kind of honesty to them - well, when Jenny wasn't spiralling and trying to get power and acting out, and when the writers actually cared? I still think that NJ had the potential to be a SOLID dynamic but the writers made it sorta unhealthy on the show :(( - but I've spoken abt moments like in seventeen candles and the empire strikes jack before, where they're both able to be emotionally vulnerable around each other in ways we don't see them be with anyone else. I've even compared that to what I like about Derena, whom everyone knows I ship in every possible way, haha. But there's something about characters who trust each other and allow themselves to be honest with each other in ways that they wouldn't otherwise EVER be - especially with characters like Jenny & Nate who have spent so long trying to seem fine and okay even when they're really not.

I honestly really like the idea of queerplatonic Jenate - they're life partners, they're each other's rock, they're each other's person - but it's not romantic OR sexual - and for Nate & Jenny, whose adolescence has involved navigating other people sexualising them so much + not having the best track record with romantic relationships - for them, I feel being qpps gets REALLY interesting, because you get all the perks of a relationship without the romantic/sexual obligations? (obligations isn't the best word, but i don't know what else to use here? LOL) and that's something i love to explore.

I feel like book Jenny was bi! The way she gushed about Nate, whom she canonically had a crush on, and the way she gushed about Serena were EXACTLY the same. Also YES I love multiple headcanons always, it's a lot of fun seeing people explore that!!! I know people who have aroace readings of Jenny, or aro lesbian / ace lesbian readings of her, and I find that really cool, too!

I also definitely get you about relating to Jenny a lot, and feeling that kind of connection. It's similar to how I feel about Dan, and .... explains a lot of my contradicting dair views, actually. A few years ago I had a seriously intense crush on a girl who was... a lot like Blair, in many ways. I spent a ridiculous amount of time writing poetry about her, etc etc, but I never actually acted on it. If she'd fabricated schemes that involved us kissing, though..... I don't know. I don't think I would've denied it if I'd felt like I actually had a chance. I think we just had a case of bad timing, & I like to think in another universe, maybe we were actually together for a bit. I'm glad that your parents are supportive of you and better than Rufus! <3

I think that's what's so interesting about fiction, to see how we view things differently depending on how we view and relate to things based on our own experiences <- THIS exactly! this is a big part of why that "proship" is in my bio. like this is exactly what it means to me and how I conceptualise & understand it!!! Like you, I also like engaging with people who have different understandings and opinions of the characters -> it definitely helps you make new friends you would otherwise not meet by staying in your bubble, & from a fandom point of view, it also helps you develop a more nuanced understanding of a character. Some of the best written Jenny Humphrey I've read was in Jenate fics - and I've had people who don't even ship Blenny tell me they liked the way I wrote Jenny in my post canon blennyfic, so... idk. it's loving Jenny hours - each and every single iteration of Jenny!!!

Lúthiena & The Fam Book Review: Urban Faery Magick by Tara Sanchez

This is my first witchy book review, please bare with me. It may not be the best review but, I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences, as well as some of my spirit family's opinions on it! Hope you all enjoy it! Thanks for reading💀🌙🌻

This book challenges the reader to "stretch their understanding of the world around them" (pg 7), and after reading, I believe it truly lived up to these words. Urban Faery Magick is dedicated to techniques, experiences, encounters, and everything in-between of working with and learning about the Fae in modern times!

Firstly, I would like to say, the title of this book should be "Modern Faery Magick" or "Faery Magick of Today", because it has a TON of information on working with the Fair Folk. Not just working with them in an "Urban" sense. Yes I know it says "Connecting to the Fae in the Modern World" underneath the title, but I just think it should have been named differently🤔🤷‍♀️

The first portion of this book, is all about techniques of meditation, protection, and how to build up necessary skills for communicating and working with the Fae. Such as working with your imagination to build up your Sight, practicing Pareidolia (the ability to see faces and shapes in objects), and dowsing for Fae activity. There are a bunch of techniques, that I will describe in a later paragraph! It also contains information on the Courts, names, and folklore surrounding these amazing spirits. Tara does an amazing, in-depth job with writing about the Fae, especially when in the case of working with them.

Chapter 3 contains detailed descriptions of basic techniques to aid the reader in their exploration of Faeries. It covers breathing techniques, rhythmic breathing and walking, and a meditation called "The Silence Between" (pg 42).

This involves listening to your heart beat and feeling your pulse to meditate (your heartbeat and pulse don't line up and there's a small pause between each.) While using this technique, it allows you to enter into the Otherworld through the slight pause, it's a neutral ground between our realm and theirs, it's "the silence between" both worlds.

Next in line comes a cleansing/grounding technique, called the Verdant Breath, which uses the aid of an Ivy plant spirit. In chapter 4, Tara uses this breathing technique to go a little further and work with this spirit to protect yourself. I really enjoyed learning the different techniques throughout this chapter, it was really cool to see new components I've never learned before. I have tried the Verdant Breath and have seen a difference in my ability to meditate. Next, I will be trying the Silence Between.

Teachings in chapters 3 and 4 are there to help you build up skills for further exercises and meditations that are placed throughout the entire book. Tara also uses these chapters to explain why it is important to build up your abilities before interacting with the Fae, and why it's highly recommended to protect yourself. Amongst these pages are different charms and amulets to use, as well.

Next we further our understanding of the Fae through chapters 5-7, and look into further techniques used in folklore and history. I really like Tara's use of history and folktales because she touches on bits and pieces of EVERYTHING, and knows when to stay in her lane.

The second half of Urban Faery Magick is my favorite. Tara introduces an elemental system known as Wu Xing, because not all Faeries "fit neatly into the boxes" of the five elemental system we know as witches, and I highly agree with her! (Pg 101) In ways this system is alike the five elemental system we know and frequently use, but is a bit different. I highly recommend looking into Wu Xing a bit further after reading Tara's book.

Leaving out Spirit of the western elemental system, Tara combines the Wu Xing elements with the 4 elements of our normal system, to create more categories for identifying and labeling species of Fae. I have included a quote of page #104 for a better understanding of how Tara classifies and combines the elements.

"Note: ...The manner in which my system combines the Eastern and Western systems follows a very similar process, with each of the Eastern elements combing to make aspects of the Western (or vice versa), as can be seen in the table below.

Therefore a being who is traditionally considered a water elemental may well actually be earth of water. Or, as with one of the entities I have worked with, fire of water. Another being may be air of metal rather than entirely air. Yet another, earth of wood, and so on.

...For each element, we will follow a case study for a particular Fae, getting to know them within environments where you may have not have thought to find them." (Page 104)

The case studies are a mix of Tara's personal experiences as well as experiences of mutuals of hers, and range across a few generations.

Each element has its own chapter, and contains a lot of information about each element. Tara does "modern sightings" for the elements, as well as two case studies. There are paragraphs dedicated to aligning yourself with each element, which I wish were a little bit longer. She also gives lovely guided meditations to visit and learn about each element's realm. At the end of each element chapter, Tara concludes with "Finding Other Fae" which includes names of Fae species to be on the lookout for!

The only bad thing I'd have to say about this book is the paragraph on giving thanks to Faeries. It states not to directly say "thank you" or acknowledge them for helping you. I, and I state again, I believe in giving thanks to my Faerie friends. Plus, Tara kind of contradicts herself by dedicating a paragraph to "not thanking the Fae" then tells you, in a later chapter, to "thank the Fae you work with". But, I digress.

I'm super grateful to have come across this book! I highly recommend it to anyone who works with the Fae, as well as beginners, because like Tara says in the beginning, everyone can learn at least one new thing! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've now read 46 chapters of Solo Leveling in a few hours.

It has the consumability of Sword Art Online, but generally (so far) avoids Sword Art Online's biggest 'surface level' missteps (there is at least some sense of progression from the characters, some sense of believable relationships with the characters and not a lot of pointless additions to the cast).

But it also is very much a Sword Art Online brand of story.

I'd also compare it to Jujutsu Kaisen and early Tokyo Ghoul in that the character and thematic content is neat and it addresses the messy parts it sets up in the most basic way where you at least can tell the story means well. (Or does it?)

It's unmistakably popcorn fun, with neat action and some really cool designs (my favourite part has grown to be how the video game stuff is incorporated into everything else), but also has what I call 'teen dark' elements where the dark themes it covers aren't very nuanced. The start is fine to be fairly simple but 47 chapters in, the fact that the story keeps these ideas so simple really has started to show.

The story touches on ideas like giving into a bad system and that system draining you from your humanity and corporations and greed ruling everything, but it also has these power fantasy elements of the protagonist becoming an unbeatable 'badass' and there is still the contradiction and reluctance from the author here to have Jing-woo ever 'completely' fail like with many Isekai stories.

To cycle back to the start, I read like 40 chapters in a few hours, and what kept me reading was the pace, little hooks and presentation.

So, spoilers, *the protagonist is now a necromancer who can summon an Ornstein rip-off and an army of knights*.

Every time I get frustrated by some of the tropes this story pulls out, it follows up with at least some kind of an interesting hook.

The absorption of all of these sinister powers has got to lead to something more interesting than just cool protagonist powers for the protagonist to eventually just 'own the noobs', right?

There is always this one hook every once in a while with those small bits of the human element that make me want to know where it all leads.

I want it to be better than all of the stuff like it, but that good stuff Iin there is just shining through the cracks just a little bit instead of fully breaking through. The story is covered in a whole bunch of dark ideas that could be much more interesting with more time spent examining them and more nuance injected in them.

It even comes across as kind of childish at points.

In the end, is it just going to end up a nihilistic power fantasy quoting Nietzsche or is it eventually going to lean into those interesting themes with some more nuance?

If this mess explodes just right, it could make everything before that point a little frustrating, but delibrately slow build-up, if it doesn't it would just be another story among many that are the same.

Again, the messy, interesting stuff is just there, waiting to completely burst out.

Part of the framing tells me it is just going to be a generic 'nihilistic dude mad at the world quoting Nietzsche' thing, part of the framing tells me there is going to be more to it. Or maybe the unease is the point?

I've never felt a story depend on what I assume to be one of its big plot points so much, but right now it's just about strafing the line between obnoxious unnuanced commentary about 'how the world really works' and maybe something a little smarter.

This just loops back to my first post: these kinds of stories frustrate me so much because they are often almost there, almost really good, but some elements just pull them down.

Despite my issues, I do find this story an easy read, so I might catch up to it eventually, but for now it's kind of a take it or leave it situation.

It didn't quite fall off a cliff, but just sort of became kind of repetitive.

#Solo Leveling
