Eurovision 2023: #02 & #01 (Finale)
Tumblr media
02. CZECHIA Vesna - "My sister's crown" 10th place
youtube
Decade ranking: 5/116 [Above Daði Freyr, below Käärijä]
Finland over Czechia seems like a no-brainer. Some midcarding bitches vs ~K*Ä*Ä*R*I*J*Ä~ come on, how hard can it be? Who is Czechia even for?!
Tumblr media
ME, motherfucker. This entry is for ME, and FOR ME ALONE!!! and since this is MY ranking, that made the decision very difficult. It took me MONTHS to settle who to put at the top.
Vesna are often cited as one of the more overrated acts in the year. Overrated by whom? Who overrates Vesna? Isn't 10th a correct placement? i've met NO ONE who would even consider putting them as high as second? - and I obv don't count since it took me AN ETERITY to out myself as a Vesna stan!!
I'd counter that Czechia are THE MOST UNDERRATED by the fandom (not by placement - that is Slovenia, as always) and absolutely deserved all the good things that happened to them ^_^
Tumblr media
So obviously, there are multiple factors at work here. The song is a fantastic earworm. Like, defo one of the best in the year? In terms of sheer replayability, "My Sister's Crown" is on the same level as "Edgar" (studio only :-/) and "Carpe Diem", and you know how much I value those. The song has four languages (including Bulgarian) and none of them clash. The lyrics are quotable and fun. This is a track with ATTITUDE and ZEST, that managed to criticize the war in Ukraine without beating us over the head with it via a poorly hidden, clumsily written political message. The song is SMART, and respects its listeners.
Tumblr media
LOVE'S NOT A MONEY BAG BLOOD'S ON YOUR GOD'S HANDS YOU CANNOT STEAL OUR SOULS
However, going into the year, there were issues - Vesna were messy and dissonant, and the six girls often gave the impression of competing against each other for attention. They were not a UNIT. Although "My Sister's Crown" was always one of the best songs, many (including myself!) were sceptical it could come together.
And it did, spectacularly.
See, one of the things about this year is that the good performances and good songs were often mismatched. Albania, Estonia and Poland had great on-stage glam-ups, but they were severely hampered by the songs being what they were. Other countries such as France and Austria had good songs, but required really good acts to tie them together, and failed or, in case of say UK, has good acts that were performed badly.
If you made a Venn Diagram between the best songs and the biggest growers, there wouldn't be much overlap. Except for Czechia.
Tumblr media
To quote Matteo Lane's pearl of wisdom; if there's only ONE GAY, everything gets done! Ahmad Malloun was the One Gay and channeled his bossbottom energy to fuss Vesna into shape. Suddenly, the girls were harmonious and disciplined and that made all the difference. Suddenly, Czechia had an act with a clear vision - Six women united visually through their outfits. Vesna had become a UNIT, united through sisterhood.
Tumblr media
SESTRO KRASIVA OI TI SILYNA HOROBRA JEDINA KORONA TVOJA
It really doesn't get mentioned nearly often enough how amazing the Czech staging was. Sure, Loreen and Käärijä, both top notch. But this is my personal favourite of the bunch. It's a visually stunning, avant garde act that fits the music, that fits the thematics, that pulls you in and tells a story without overtly complicating matters. They start as a group of angry hexaplets and then burst into joyful sororian rapture at the end. The staging is both aesthetically pleasing and intuitive. They hit the gold standard for acts that everyone should try to strive for!!
Tumblr media
There are times where I wonder whether I really should rank Vesna above Käärijä. My Sister's Crown fully morphed into a me-coded entry. And perhaps, if and when I watch 2023 again, I may do exactly that. For now though, I've decided against it. The argument for Finland is less complicated, so I went with that. And now for the winner of this ranking I am sure NOBODY saw coming ever:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
01. FINLAND Käärijä - "Cha Cha Cha" 2nd place
youtube
Decade ranking: 4/116 [Above Vesna, below Chanel]
It's Käärijä, bitch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rest my case for ranking Finland first. I don't think anyone argues this as invalid? Good, let's pick it all apart because if there's anything Käärijä deserves, it is being talked about. 😉
Tumblr media
So um, where to start? Maybe it's best to start with the song - "Cha Cha Cha" was that rare 1-in-500 entry. I always say that novelty always tends to become stale over time - once in a blue moon however, it endures. "Cha Cha Cha" is a novelty song that is also an excellent song in its own right, and it stil holds up very well. It's a fun song to listen to, even without all the circus and theatrics.
The circus and theatrics though, omg <3 Talk about a DELECTABLE act, once again. This is yet again an example of how staging compliments the song and makes it digestible. Cha Cha Cha is entirely in Finnish with only a few loan words tossed in - difficult to get into on paper. The staging however, brings the plot points home.
The song's about wanting to overcome anxieties to dance? So break from the crates
Tumblr media
Confront the inner Dance Demons that harass your psyche
Tumblr media
make your way to the dancefloor while dodging decapitation via errant wires.
Tumblr media
and then, when you overcome all fears transition to that godly, campy key chance, ride your them, having overcome your inhibitions.
Tumblr media
AND I GALLAVANT ON THE FLOOR LIKE A CHA CHA CHA AND MY ANXIETIES HAVE NO GRIP ON ME NO MORE
Tumblr media
The act is BRILLIANT. The ballroom dancers with their creepy pearly-whites, the dorkopotamus choreography, the styling, the overwhelming sense of triumph once the key change hits... It's the same deal as Vesna and Loreen, just a handful of visual cues that visualize the song's themes (anxiety, rather than sisterhood or desolation) are easy to understand and don't further complicate matters. THIS is how it's done. This is how you Eurovision.
Tumblr media
The magical ingredient that tied it all together was the man, the dad bod, the bolero himself - Käärijä. Talk about a personality so massive everything gravitated towards him. It's hard to put the extent of his likeability into words - he's just so disarmingly himself. The key here is that Käärijä doesn't see himself as anything special. To him, he's just "boy from Vantaa who likes queen Loreen". He's just self-aware enough to realize the effect he has on others, but not self-aware enough to understand what exactly endears him to so many people. So when Käärijä plays up for funsies, he magnifies all aspects of his personality which makes him... even more endearing. 😍
Tumblr media
(it's the same magic dust that has people flock to Baby Lasagna this year, really.)
It's rare to have a contestant who managed to completely warp the meta around him to this extent. It's even more rare that the contestant in this position then loses the competition. I remember telling my friend André, who was behind on NF news, that Käärijä had won UMK, and he replied with an innocuous "great, I haven't been this excited for a contestant since Verka!". I think I realize in that moment, that was to be Käärijä's destiny. Verka was the Hot Favourite in their year, the breakout star of 2007 - and Verka placed second to a more competent entry (Molitva <3). It was in that moment that I knew that Käärijä's inevitable fate was to come second to Loreen.
Tumblr media
And I feel like, we all knew deep down that was where we were headed. We all wanted Käärijä to win as much as we did, because we knew that he would not. He was blissfully cruising towards a loss, and that was too much of an injustice to accept it and not manifest a reality where he beats Sweden.
It even got to a point where some people are now retroactively trying push the notion Tattoo is better than Euphoria (that statement is more offensive than anything I've ever commited to print or speech, including the one time I called Lesley Roy frumpy on cam <3) and the best entry ever (excuse you?) largely because it beat Cha Cha Cha.
Tumblr media
So if Käärijä is this great, then why the doubt? Why only fourth for the decade (for the moment)?
Well, it's same deal as Cornelia for me. The best live of Cha Cha Cha that we received was the first one, at UMK, and every other performance we've had since then was not as good. The one in Eurovision had terrible vocals and slightly less impressive staging compared to UMK. I know right? The ESC staging did MORE and yet accomplished LESS. They got rid of all the wrestling references? Where's the close-up at the end? The arena? THE LIFT?
Tumblr media
Sure, these inaccuracies didn't detract from my personal enjoyment of Cha Cha Cha. They however did allow for Käärijä to fall behind far enough behind Loreen in the jury vote so that he could no longer catch up with her in the televote, like a death by a thousand paper cuts.
It was a great live, but it wasn't great enough to win. Eurovision Käärijä was not Käärijä at his best, while Vesna without question gave their best performance in the Grand Final. Hence my doubts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I ultimately went with Käärijä anyway because he did something Vesna could not - he gave a concert in my city, and I attended. HE MADE ME LEAVE THE HOUSE AFTER DARK. And god, if you've not been to a Käârijä gig before, absolutely fucking go if you're able to - IT'S CRAZY IT'S PARTY is the perfect catchphrase for this hyperactive, sexually amorphous, adorkable gremlin.
He was his unadulterated self, slapping his belly only vaguely aware of his sex appeal, swooning over a group of Slovene attendees because they reminded him of The Love Of His Life Bojan Cveticanin, ripping one of his merch t-shirts in half and then wearing it as a jacket, airdiving a wayward balloon that floated its way on the stage. The music was also excellent. Exposed to to the FULL scope of Käärijäness, made all the good memories of the 2023 preshow flow back, how could I not rank him anywhere other than first? Maybe I will change my mind and rank Vesna first in a few years from now, but for now, let's savour him while he's still fresh in our minds.
REMINDER THAT THE 2024 ROSTER IS GREAT LARGELY THANKS TO KÄÄRIJÄ.
REMINDER THAT HE WOULD SO WIN ANY FUTURE EUROVISION IF HE WANTED TO:
youtube
(May I just name this as my fave song from the 2024 nf season MAY I????*)
He WAS 2023. He WAS Eurovision.
He may have lost the contest, but he has won life. (and paid his taxes.)
ALL RISE FOR THE BEST ACT OF 2023!
Tumblr media
The RANKING (completed)
Tumblr media
"Novo, Bolje" was my fave 2024 NF also-ran. Obv.
ADDENDUM: ABOUT ESC2024
Yeah, obviously i'm not going to do a pre-show ranking. With all the poison and controversy going on, it's just not the right time. I delayed this ranking specificially so that I wouldn't be temped to do the 2024 one later. (Unlike a certain broadcasting institution, I possess a modest amount of insight, foresight and self-awareness. 🙂 )
Hopefully, ESC 2024 goes down without too many incidents, and I'll able to start my post-show ranking the week after the Grand Final.
See you there, hopefully, if Eurovision isn't dead and buried by then! 💚

The bridge of You're Losing Me really hits me like a Metra train every single time I hear it still...like it feels like she is pleading her case to get him to love her back..."I gave you my best mes and my endless empathy I was your bravest soldier I'm in the frontlines fighting for you I'M THE BEST THING AT THIS PARTY!!" like she's giving him reasons to appreciate her, she's making herself look as desirable and compromising as possible, she's trying to please him and he doesn't care...and then the heartbreaking, jawdropping retraction of her words "I wouldn't marry me either a pathological people pleaser" like she's given up the act, she's tired and just being honest and trying to sprinkle in some self deprecating humour to mask her hurt...and then "who only wanted you to see her" feels as bitter and scathing as it does a pathetic confession.
She's telling him that she didn't want much and he couldn't even give her THAT (the bar is on the ground and he dug a hole) but it also feels like a last ditch attempt at her telling him "THERE'S STILL TIME, you can still appreciate me".
It's like the bridge starts off with Taylor at the prime of her rage, frustration and confidence that she could convince him to save their relationship...and with every passing lyric her facade slips and she becomes more hauntingly honest...finally accumulating in the outro where she's just straight up laying out her demands to him and begging him to DO SOMETHING about it.
It feels like the last line "I've got nothing to believe unless you're choosing me...you're losing me" is more of an honest confession to herself than to him. It feels like she finally realised that if he's not willing to give her what she needs, she's also willing to leave him.
The whole song is literally so OOTW paranoia coded...the "stop, stop, stop" and "you don't know what you've got until it's gone" feel like ultimatums to HIM...because she's done all she could have and now she wants him to reciprocate. I think the last line is her realising what needs to be done and the fact that this was written in 2022 ALLEGEDLY is sooo terrifying.
YES the pacing of that song, the way her voice rises and falls, tells a story on its own. all her rage and despair, and all her hope, fading out like a dying thing.
the frontlines stanza really hits me because she's literally like... i did all of these things for you!!! i was your best friend and your biggest ally!! i did EVERYTHING, how can you not SEE how good i've been here??? and it always brings to mind this visual of a woman desperately scratching and banging at a closed door.

Hey, since you often catch details and seem like an open-minded person, I want to share what I observed in the last few days. So, I definitely believe in Jikook but that was not always the case. My bias is Jimin and I always mostly focused on him, but once I observed Jungkook more carefully, the truth revealed itself step by step. Now something similar happened since I focused on Taehyung. And it seems crazy, to me as well, but please give it a chance! Watch "Nippon TV BUZZ RHYTHM 02 - BTS Cut" timestamp: 13:55, and watch (and listen to) all of their expressions closely, especially Jikook and Taehyung. Keep an eye on Namjoon, too. Then please look at the lyrics of Sweet Night and really reflect on them. Just as a reminder, there is Taehyung calling Jimin his "one and only best friend" in "Let's BTS" and similarly in Festa 2019, for example. I also am stuck on Jin calling Taehyung very generous and big-hearted in "Special Movie BTS MUSIC JOURNEY" (after the release of Sweet Night) and the others agreeing, their expressions speaking once again. Then finally those compilations where Taekook is apparently jealous of each other. Or Vmin. And now you just have to connect the dots but I did not see any other person who has done so. All those moments, all those compilations make so much more sense to me. All in all, it seems that Taehyung has or had feelings for Jimin. Sounds crazy! Of course we should not assume too much but the connections are there and in hindsight, they seem obvious. You just have to put the puzzle pieces together. I really hope that Taehyung is over it, because unrequited love hurts badly. Taehyung as a person makes so much more sense to me. His actions, his depression, his pain... Well, I guess Jimin did not call himself "Tailor of Chaos" without reason. That situation must have been difficult for him, too. Maybe (just maybe) that is an indicator regarding his state in 2020... And of course on Jungkook. But maybe that is the actual reason why Jungkook and Taehyung seem to be closer now, maybe mending their friendship! Especially, since Taehyung found a partner. And maybe Jikook feel some kind of guilt for causing Taehyung pain... who knows. There is much to think about and honestly, it sounds like pure fanfiction but if I learned something in life, it is that nothing is impossible. Hope you give it a chance, I really would like your opinion on all that. I certainly am feeling very surprised. Have a nice day :)
Yes anon, it takes very little for me to judge people seeing as I'm a lunatic myself 🤭🤭 if I had a shilling for everytime someone called me crazy I would have attended all of Suga's concerts and then some 😂 so u get no judgement from me my lovely 🙌🏽
Except insecure Jikookers, of course. Fuck you! I judge you everyday! 🤨🤨🤨
So! Umm yes. I've seen this theory being thrown around. I have friends who think this might be the case. And one of them is actually really good at analysing and picking up cues and she believes V may have had feelings for Jimin at some point and her arguments make sense.
But for me... idk. Idk anon. 🤔 I have a hard time picturing this. I will share a clip that will be hard for some of you to watch. So brace yourselves
Oh boy. Glad I have my anons off because u guys are already kinda mad at V atm 😂😂
Things to note about the first clip: (I know... I know. It's bad. I recently just discovered it and it doesn't look good, I agree)
a) Point to note number one is that, that is how most people in SK feel about homosexuality. As u can hear V is basically telling Jimin something is wrong with him mentally for liking men. And when u grow up with everyone around u telling u this, of course u will believe it. It also explains why he would keep the company he keeps. (Go Google Bogum and his cult scandal) People in SK don't believe men can be with other men. And those who have seen it happen, think its a mental illness. This was obviously embedded in V for him to have done this not once, but twice. And this is only what we saw on camera.
b) 2nd point to note; Taekook just cannot be real. It's just, impossible. Yes, V has changed, obviously. Hanging out with Jimin will do that to you. He obviously doesn't feel as strongly about homosexuality like he used to. And he loves Jimin and JK which means he has adjusted his mentality. But, this is a guy who used to say basically homophobic stuff to his friend. And as u can see, that clip is from around May 2015 So at what point would V have started dating JK as early as 2013 when this is how he felt about his friend a boy, liking boys?
c) 3rd point to note; Jimin doesn't deny it. I hate how he's just defending himself there repeating over and over; I don't like you that way, so what's your issue? I dont behave that way towards you, why you mad? Anyway, Jimin doesn't once say "no i don't like men." Or "stop lying" he just says "I don't feel that way about you."
d) Last point to note, Jikook is real. Why? Because what triggered V, was Jimin telling JK to sit next to him. And immediately V goes off about how something is wrong with Jimin in the head because these days he likes men. Likes JK.
Tumblr media
Now anon, let's go back to point number 2. I know internalised homophobia is a thing. (Thank you Shameless! You taught me sm!) But it stems from someone hating that they like someone of the same sex and they don't want to be that way, but they are. So saying V used to have a crush on Jimin insinuates he would have had to get over his homophobia and start seeing Jimin in a new light. I mean, it's Jimin and the Jimin effect is a thing that exists. But, still. Idk. I just don't know. Watching that clip tells me that his parents are like this. Him being so close with the WS, tells me he wouldn't have kept them as friends if at any one point he started liking someone of the same sex. Knowing how they feel about it.
V is more accepting now, of course. But Jikook are in the closet and only close knit people know about it. And V definitely isn't divulging that to the WS. Again, knowing how they feel about this topic.
What am I saying anon? I think those V jealous Vmin moments that exist are because he "lost" his bestfiend when Jikook became a thing. He had to share Jimin with JK. And I imagine Jimin tried to be there for both of them but sometimes JK took priority and maybe V didn't like that. They used to be bestfriends. Super close. V even looked after Jimin in school. Asked some people he knew to look after the new kid because that was his friend. They were close. Really close. Then satellite Jeon comes and changes everything.
Now to the assignment you gave me. The question was who's the most romantic
Tumblr media
Suga (what?) And RM say JK. Guess they've seen it first hand. 🤭 Also Jikook both point at Jin
Tumblr media
V on the other hand says Jikook but then changes it to just Jimin
Tumblr media
I also looked at the lyrics of sweet night (he sounds so good) and I'm guessing you're talking about this part;
Tumblr media
Anon, if you ship Vmin, or are suspicious of Vmin, it would be easy to conclude this song is about Jimin. Easy. But if you're like me who believes V is as straight as a ruler, then the first thing I think of when I hear that, is some girl he liked at the time that he was really close to. Someone he dated in the past, maybe. To me V is as straight as they come and I could try, but I cannot see where you're coming from.
But if you listen to sweet night and then watch V jealous compilations, you're gonna be influenced. Because you're going in already thinking the best friend he's talking about is Jimin! But, remember, you don't have to have romantic feelings for someone to be jealous. You can be jealous that your sister is spending too much time with someone else. You can be jealous your bestfriend doesn't make time for you anymore ever since they started dating. You know what I mean?
That's what I think you saw. In my opinion, of course. I could be wrong and way off base but...yeah.
In Conclusion: Vmin isn't real and there was never potential for it to be so.
I appreciate u trusting me with this ask, anon 😘

Like Real People Do
Written By: Hozier
Artist: Hozier
Released: 2014
Alternate version included: Live in America, 2015
This song is a metaphor. Hozier uses “bog bodies” in Ireland, bodies which are exhumed after centuries of natural mummification, to describe a new relationship.
[Verse 1] I had a thought, dear, however scary About that night, the bugs and the dirt Why were you digging? What did you bury Before those hands pulled me from the earth? [Chorus] I will not ask you where you came from I will not ask and neither should you Honey, just put your sweet lips on my lips We should just kiss like real people do [Verse 2] I knew that look, dear: eyes always seeking Was there in someone that dug long ago So I will not ask you why you were creeping In some sad way, I already know [Chorus] So I will not ask you where you came from I would not ask and neither would you Honey, just put your sweet lips on my lips We should just kiss like real people do [Chorus] I could not ask you where you came from I could not ask and neither could you Honey, just put your sweet lips on my lips We could just kiss like real people do

[Verse 1] At last My love has come along My lonely days are over And life is like a song (Oh, yeah, yeah) [Verse 2] At last The skies above are blue My heart was wrapped up in clover The night I looked at you [Bridge] I found a dream that I could speak to A dream that I can call my own I found a thrill to press my cheek to A thrill that I've never known (Oh, yeah, yeah) [Verse 3] You smiled, you smiled Oh, and then the spell was cast And here we are in heaven For you are mine at last

Love knows no bounds
You wouldn't sugar coat it. But you tried to make sure that your love was going to be the last thing they ever doubted. You worked really hard and gave it everything you got.
Even spent countless hours in the library to make sure you got things just right. Before checking and double-checking that your gifts worked properly. These should work for decades if done properly. You smiled tenderly. No, not should. Will they will work for decades even if it killed you.
Iruma
Just as atori reached for iruma. In that moment, that pure fear took over his body. There was a flash. Iruma blinked. Surrounding him was a shield? He hadn't had time to throw one up, so how...
Glancing down, he spotted the woven necklace you had mad for him glowing brightly in its protective haze. He gently grasped the cords. You always kept your promise, didn't you.
He felt your warmth emanating from your gift as he now faced his opponent head-on. He wasn't going to touch his friends or his Kohai. He had your love on his side, and with that, he could face anything.
Alice
Alice didn't really understand sentiment and had trouble expressing emotions properly. But that didn't stop his friends and classmates from somewhat understanding his desires. Nor did it stop you from loving him it seemed.
He stared at your handmade gift in awe. Truly, he hadn't expected to receive something so marvelous as the hair tie you had made. A woven combination of pink, green, and blue with a small pair of silver bells attached.
You had been so excited when gifting it to him that he couldn't even try to refuse. One time, he panicked when he thought his flames had burned it. But to his surprise, it was still in tack. Not a single singe. He asked you and you just laughed.
"Darling, I've made it flame proof you could accidentally drop it in lava, and it would remain in tack bells and all." Alice proceeded to wear in every day then, the small chime from the bells a fond reminder. Seeming to say, 'I'm still here.'
Clara
Clara was a restless child. Always on the move. She was aware of that. She knew there were times when she should sit still and be quiet, but it was so hard! But you seemed to understand that better than other adults.
So when you gifted Clara, the puzzle cube, she got a great surprise. Once she solved it, the puzzle immediately changed to something new. You remember hearing her excited giggles as she showed her classmates.
You remember having to fight Kalego-San in regards to her keeping it in glass, but once you proved it was actually helping her learn, he shut up. Clara smiled proudly as she held up her first paper ever getting 70%.
You had helped her even when others would give up, and you believed she could do it! She was so happy you were always there, even if you weren't in the same room. Your love made Clara feel smarter.
Sabro
He watched you howl with laughter. He crossed his arms and pouted. It really wasn't that funny. When you stopped laughing, you reached out and squeezed his shoulders.
"They don't actually think you're their biological father. Papa is a title in this case." You tried comforting him. "A title? How is that a title?" His tail perking up and swaying.
"Well, when we're younger, words are a lot less complex. We don't think too much about their meanings, but truth be told, they say a lot without saying much." His tail lowered as he tried to understand your meaning.
"They called you Papa after you saved them, and that's what a parent is more or less. Someone who protects you. Who you feel safe around. Some you can count on." Sabro reached up and touched the earring you had gifted him now amused. "So it's a title to be worn with pride then."
Soi
Much like how his precious horn was a gift from his mother, you had also gifted him something special. It might not look like much to some, but you had painstakingly written down the sheet music to every song you could remember from your old life. While you couldn't give him the lyrics, you gave him the melodies.
Some were dark and haunting, and others were sad yet melodic. But a lot were bright, cheerful, and practically poured out love and warmth. Just like you in a way. Soi was often reminded of you when he played one of these songs.
It was as if you were dancing along or whispering the unknown words to his ears on the wind. Or even just sitting there beside him in silence, enjoying the moment. He wondered if you could hear it even if you were far away. As if you knew when he would play for you.
Jazz
Jazz had collected a lot of things, which tends to happen when one has sticky fingers like his. But when he started living with you, he was pleasantly surprised when you treated his little habit as a game. You both would go back and forth, snatching items from each other that you sort of forgot who's what.
But Jazz's treasure was the one thing you never took back. A large leather jacket that was even big on you, but you had kept it for sentimental reasons. Although on occasion he spotted a patch added to it resembling accomplishments he had achieved.
He often found himself wearing it with pride and enjoyed the warm feeling he would get when he saw a new patch. You were cheering him on every step of the way it seemed. You had also reminded him of how far he had come.
Picero
You had carefully hand stitched a new sleep mask for your sleepy little grouch. Happily ensuring that it would be adjustable and comfortable enough to wear. Picero had never taken it off from what you could tell, so he must have appreciated it a little.
He often spent his days day dreaming in a sense, ensuring that he was well rested. But damn one day a thought drifted into his mind. What if he had never met you? If you had never existed in the first place? His hand gripped tightly to his new mask.
The thought had startled him more than he would ever admit. He traced each stitch with his thumb. The world would be colder. And that would also mean one less person to cuddle next to. Grinding his teeth at the thought.
There was no way you were ever allowed to disappear. It was your own fault for being the perfect cuddle bug to relax with on his cloud. You had somehow much like stupid Gaap become an essential part of his life.
Kerori
Kerori stared at the cute little keychain you had made for her. A snowflake inside a star. She scoffed for a moment before attaching it to her bag.
To an outsider, it wouldn't look like much. Just an ordinary keychain. But the little imp knew your meaning behind this. You couldn't wait to see what kind of star she would become.
Whenever she looked at it, she would get this feeling of anticipation. She could practically hear the cheering that echoed from the tiny object. Ker-or-i ker-or-i instead of the usual kuromu her fans shouted.
Fine then. If one of her biggest fans was looking forward to future performances. Then she would just have to show them everything she'd got, wouldn't she?
Kamui
A lovely pocket watch for such a refined gentleman of his taste. It matched all his attire perfectly while having its own striking features. Of course, Kamui knew it was for more than just telling time.
A pair of eyes carved meticulously into the cover. A warning to any that tried to harm him. You were always watching. Unfortunately, those eyes had a double meaning. You were always watching his behavior, too.
It was a reminder for him to behave and to not harass the female students and staff members. It was rather embarrassing but also a reassuring reminder. Kamui would often stroke the cover with his feathers in deep thought. Sometimes chuckling over the scolding, you might give if he did or said something that he had thought of.
Kamui tried to reign in some of his actions and to be more careful of his words due to some of those scoldings. He didn't want to come off as creepy and certainly didn't intend to make any lady upset over how he acted or spoke. He could almost hear you coo over him, saying what a fine gentleman he would become.
Goemon
He could always feel your presence on the wind. No matter where you were, the wind would always guide him back to you. Oftentimes, he would egarly run up to you excited to find you. Because sometimes it seems like you were too far away. Even with the wind telling him where to go.
He didn't want you to be out of reach. You were an important part of this family. So when you realized his concerns, you affectionately smiled. You made a small braid of your hair and cut it. You made sure to find a way to preserve it and turned it into a tassel.
A constant reminder that you were never too far away. Goemon, being the excited child he was immediately attached it to his sword before showing it off. Honestly, keeping that boy happy was a pleasure. Besides, a lock of hair was certainly a small price in exchange.
Lied
Lied was well... constantly doubting himself. He didn't think he belonged on the same level as his classmates. Oftentimes, he would believe that luck was the only reason he had made it this far. You absolutely hated that negativity.
So what was a parent to do other than to help their child grow some confidence. You made him a tracking bracelet. No, not where you could track him, although that was added as an emergency feature. It wasn't your fault that the teachers neglected to think you wouldn't offer your children some kind of assistance during the heartbreaker.
In fact, Lied had done well in avoiding teachers until he had Robin-San on his tail. All thanks to the fact that each teachers signature was embedded into it so that he could find one in an emergency. Or, in this case, avoid.
Suffice to say, he constantly uses his little gift now and has gained some more confidence since then. The little trickster constantly avoids trouble now as he sets up his little pranks and will always be checking where you are on his bracelet as well. You made sure to place yourself in as a heart, so he always knew you loved him. Regardless of all the mischief he seems to create.
Elizabetta
Oh, sweet child. She who loves all the attention and sees all possible love routes. You sometimes wondered if she ever got worried about how carefree she'd act.
One day, Elizabetta was glaring at her own reflection. She was frustrated. Her hair was a mess, and her brush had finally broke. How was she to look perfect now? And if she didn't look perfect, would everyone still love her?
She glanced down and remembered the box that you had given her the day before. Hurriedly, she opened it. You always seemed to know what everyone needed. Yes! A set of new combs and brushes. Each one hand made with lovely flower designs. Even a few horn accessories added.
As Elizabetta combed through the tangled haystack of hair, she calmed down. It was like you were there fixing her hair for her. You were making everything better even if you weren't present.
Allocer
What did you make the little demon who gobbled up knowledge like it was their last meal? When he goes through book after book, retaining endless knowledge. Well, it was fairly simple, actually. The answer is.... bookmarks.
You planted them all over Allocers' room inside his books and school bags. Handwritten messages on each one. 'Don't forget to eat lunch.' , 'I love you.' , or 'Go to bed, you little gremlin. I know it's past midnight.' He would often chuckle at the ever changing reminders.
But his favorite was one he could write back on. He had done so jokingly, not aware that you would see it and write back. 'Don't wanna', 'child don't make come over there!' He blinked before squirming in excitement and asking how you made it. 'I'll show you later.' You wrote back.
That was the best part about you. You never withheld information letting him decide for himself on if that knowledge was safe to use or not. Tomorrow always held something new.

➪ 𝐀/𝐍.: Finally I got around posting this... I got this request ages ago tbh and as I wanted to edit the final post I messed it up and now I lost the original request which I feel really bad about... It was such a cute message from this anon, and every time I reread it, it made me feel so happy! I don't know if they remember sending this ask, but now I've gotten to complete it after so much time, and I hope I did it justice in the end!! (Pls forgive me anon) Angst can really challenge my brain sometimes but I hope it turned out acceptable! > <
➪ 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: Jo × reader
➪ 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: angst, no comfort, lot of reminiscing, post-breakup frustration, conflicted feelings
➪ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭: there are multiple parts in the song I got inspired from, so I'll just highlight the chosen lyrics!
➪ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬: 1,6k
Tumblr media
From outside it all seemed perfect; the venue, the lighting, the scenery from the top, and the two of you sitting opposite each other.
Both of you were dressed nicely, holding light alcoholic drinks as if you truly belonged together, when in reality you knew that this wasn't the case for quite some time now.
You actually hated how picture-perfect it all seemed — you might have loved it once, or you might have wished for something similar in the past thinking about the far future, but certainly not anymore.
...Really, it was pure coincidence and the universe's own momentarily punishment towards you that right now you're bound to be here and witness, even indulge in such a scenario.
"Should I pour some more?" Jo's distant voice hit your ears making you tear your eyes away from your drink, but you didn't let your irises wander onto his comfortable sitting frame.
"No need." Your response was curt and frustration was building inside you like a fresh fire setting ablaze, flame particles rubbing off on your exposed skin burning the surface for a second — or it seemed, as your body was undefyingly growing warmer and warmer.
Why are you even here, having this 'talk' with Jo?
Why are you even breathing the same close air as him? Even if you're under the seemingly endless night sky stretching far beyond your eyes' reach, providing enough room for a thousand new breath strokes... Why with him?
You were surprised by your fast rush of frustration turning into anger, but at the same time, it clouded your mind so thinking clearly was a challenge currently.
The Rosé in your tall glass seemed to swim and flow so efficiently, just like it could rush down your throat, but even consuming alcohol to ease your mind seemed to be just a distant wish for the rational side of your brain.
Damn it.
For digging up the grave another time, weren't you two?
The grave, in which your past relationship lay undisturbed until now.
Even though both of you had the chance to ignore each other when you made eye contact at the far ends of the jazz bar, for some reason you chose to start a conversation anyway.
It seemed especially nostalgic and romantic since you two decided to go out onto the rooftop, for privacy...
Privacy?
What kind of privacy do the two of you need, who now act like total strangers who forgot what their past relationship looked like?
Who erased all past connections, mentions of love, and adoration towards the other, putting all of those now cursed memories in a small box, locking it, then throwing its key away, and then throwing the whole box away. Far away.
...The past few minutes seemed to pass by in a blur, you almost had no recollection of how you got here.
The sweet wine was just a distraction, just like the way Jo made conversation about pouring more of the reddish liquid into your glass, to which you sternly said no.
It was all a getaway from the harsh reality; Rosé flowing with your chosen family which you both knew well... that you weren't each other's home or trusted family-like, significant other anymore.
When the wounds of the breakup were still fresh in your heart you always thought of countless ways to rewrite your broken fate.
'And it would've been sweet... If it could've been me.'
These were the thoughts that still clouded your sunny mind from time to time, bringing a sudden wave of dark winds and rain into your feelings and mental state.
Thinking of all the possible scenarios that could have occurred in the future was always a dangerous mind game for anyone who's trying to forget rather than build new, unlikely, and even delusional memories.
"Some snacks, you'd like?" Jo continued in a quiet, very respectful but still neutral tone — he must have felt your nerves getting the better of you — as he seemed to be averting his eyes for split seconds.
It looked like he finally realized how this situation is wrong on so many levels and he seemed to be getting nervous too.
There were too many feelings swirling inside you; Feeling bad because you snapped at him a minute ago, but frustration also kept building on the side which tore you apart. It made you see two sides of the same coin in a bad way.
The whole situation felt like it was forbidden, for the two of you to even breathe the same air with such conflicting feelings developing inside... you could almost physically see the dark gloomy clouds on top of your heads, as if indicating your personal moods minute by minute.
It was not okay how you were going round and round inside a spinning reel of strong impulses.
You needed to put an end to it somehow, anyhow...
"No, I'm good." You finally answered his previous hesitant question.
Well... you feeling good was the biggest lie currently, but what else could you say?
This was not the place nor the right person to share your emotions with. And clearly, he'll never be one of them again.
A heavy silence fell for the first time and it stayed for several minutes.
As you had time to ponder the spinning reel came back, inviting you in once again; you could cut this meeting short and leave, or in fact, you should leave for both of your emotional safety, or you could change the topic to a light-hearted one, or keep the silence, and so on...
The burning frustration turned into hot nervousness within you as you grew more self-conscious around Jo.
It was even weirder, considering how you felt as if it was the first time you saw him, like your first ever date when it all started.
Or your first kiss.
Right time, and right place, but the wrong person.
...How much time has it been since you parted ways?
6 months.
Over half a year, but not a full-length year yet, so there's still a chance for forgiveness.
Or at least this is what you read in many novels, or saw in consolatory movies, series, dramas.
Is it weird to have a little faith in that?
Is it foolish or even selfish to think about your happiness like that?
—You have to say something or your thoughts will start to spiral again.
"...We went from strangers to friends, then to lovers, then to strangers again but with a shared past. We were something, don't you think so? " You spoke out of turn, surprising your rational self and poor Jo, who currently looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
Quite the change of topic, but there was no turning back now.
"I, well... That's in the past now. We're not in a relationship anymore." He said, still unsure but his voice had a cold tone to it. "We were something, we had something, but that something — seeing that we can barely name it, passed a while ago." He kept his voice quiet as if he, too, was afraid of saying such harsh things, or worried about hurting you.
But he said what he said anyway, no eye contact whatsoever, nevertheless, just as brutally honest.
Silence fell again, your surroundings seemed to falter and blur around you, and you barely registered the fine wine in your hands.
Tears weren't coming to your eyes, it wasn't that, your focus just simply shifted, altered itself.
Right, it passed.
You hummed, almost inaudible even to yourself as you ran his words over your head once more, to confirm them.
You unintentionally ignored Jo for a couple of moments too, while being lost in your thoughts, but then he spoke again, louder, to direct your attention back to him.
"In my defense—"
"I have none." You cut him off sharply, trying to imply the end of the conversation somehow, anyhow.
You were desperate to stop, but he was desperate to continue... When there was nothing to continue, but a lot to stop.
He said enough already and you too, way more than you should have and wanted to have.
It has all been said and done between you two, six months before and now, this turn of events confirmed everything for you.
There was nothing to talk about anymore, it was starting to get awkward how Jo seemed to try communicating with you again.
As if he foolishly wanted to make everything right after such a long amount of time, just because he might have realized his mistakes...?
...No, that time has passed.
Memories were bulging up inside you once again, those sweet, promising times, as if after a long drought on dry land suddenly salty ocean water washed over the desert-like place, just like that your recollection started flashing vividly.
As if everything suddenly got reborn, every single little thing, feeling, thought, and future plan.
Rainwater was something most lands and owners were happy to receive but you weren't this time.
It was like a blessing for them... but the worst curse for you currently.
But if it gets out of hand... Flood is not an option, it would destroy every house and shelter that you've built up until now.
It would be a shame to see your hard work go, so you had to do something to prevent such bad things.
"I should go." You said, interrupting whatever Jo was explaining before in an uncertain tone. "No, we should go. On separate ways." You added, a rush of confidence taking you over and you stood up abruptly putting down the fancy wine at the same time, indicating your words further.
"...We need to say goodbye at some point, for both of our sakes. It didn't work out, and by now I'm certain that it never will. This has to be it." You sighed audibly, peeking into the nicely decorated inside of the jazz bar for the first time since you've got here, and you hastily stepped closer to the balcony glass door. "Goodbye Jo, take care." You looked back for a split second and then left, finally, forever.

my (official and real) sketchbook playlist!! descriptions underneath! i have put the songs in a specific order and tried to make sure all the songs fit their vibe too outside (or disregarding) lyrics. also the types of music i think theyd enjoy lol.
1.. don't believe - vashti bunyan
oh, don't believe that love brings happiness gone tomorrow, here today love involves so much unhappiness don't believe what they say
lets kick it off with some folksy bittersweet 🤟this is both kaisa and johanna separately, before they meet. and their mirrored loneliness
2. apple pie - the scary jokes
i'll always be too shy to say what's on my mind i'm fantasizing all the time
the scary jokes are on this playlist. kaisa music. magic shygirl type of stuff
3. walking all day - graham coxon
walking all day with my mind on fire tryin' to get talkin' to you
this one's johanna vibes. ohh the days she'd spend walking round town, visiting the library, daydreaming about running into her and pretending it was an accident. she can't sit still, always restless, a teenager again
4. beautiful brain - mabel ye
i think you're beautiful i think you've got a beautiful brain i think you're beautiful i check up on it every day and while we sit just four feet across separated by a wall that is both white and moss i feel distance from you i feel closer to you
real ones know this came up in sketchbook week.. watch the music video for this!! (its sketchbook af)
5. super crush - tiger trap
i've got a supercrush on you because i think about you night and day
i'm not explaining this
6. the too much song - lemon demon
you're too much or am i not enough? you're (too much) and i feel this way much too much the longer that i wait the more you are much to my dismay
kaisa's perspective..
7. pink smoke - the scary jokes
you walk through walls set off the smoke alarms i feel your arms wrapping around me your aura almost drowns me pink smoke gets stuck in my throat when i say your name my heart goes up in flames
aaah johanna is crushing on a being of magic!
8. trees and flowers - strawberry switchblade
and i hate the buildings and the way they tower over me can't you see? i get so frightened no-one else seems frightened
strawberry switchblade is such kaisa music! goth & sweet! this song is definitely her but i think johanna's general anxieties about the city & the wilderness really show up in this song. they connect over these anxieties
9. i wanna be the moon - the scary jokes
it's scary to see you falling for me i wish that i could be i wanna be, i wanna be the moon i can't make you cry from way up in the sky and that's the reason why i wanna be, i wanna be the moon
kaisa's perspective. she doesn't like to get too close to people
10. it must be love - madness
i never thought i'd miss you half as much as i do
cmaaan johanna would love madness. london gerl. also one of the actual best love songs ever written ever
11. i have the moon - lush
you have to fly around the world all day to keep the sun upon your face i'd like to come and comfort you but i'd be blinded by the blue you have the sun, i have the moon
another sketchbook week song OOPS... literally sun/moon couple.
12. m'lover - kishi bashi
i wanna do what lovers do with you i wanna walk the edge of the earth with you
ripped STRAIGHT off the hilda soundtrack shamelessly. lovely magical sound. this plays when they're going on a very long expedition together
13. soho square - kirsty maccoll
one day you'll be waiting there no empty bench in soho square and we'll dance around like we don't care and i'll be much too old to cry and you'll kiss me quick in case i die before my birthday one day you'll be waiting there come summertime in soho square and i'll be painting stars up in the sky before i get too old to cry before my birthday
one of kaisa's first crushes was kirsty maccoll i'll say it. this song is so emotional the strings her vooiice!! this is a city love song. this is johanna leaving trolberg within the hc that they were childhood friends.
14. let's do everything for the first time forever - of montreal
may we dance again so i can pretend we're dancing for the first time? because when we danced for the first time i was so nervous!
it's been so long for both of them they're like teenagers again.. every time they talk its like talking to a school crush. embarrassing af. we both are out of practice with romance. let's do it together!!
15. black magic - little mix
take a sip of my secret potion i'll make you fall in love for a spell that can't be broken one drop should be enough
hehehehe!!!
16. my girlfriend is a witch - october country
spells fill the air i think i hear footsteps on my stair coming near her thoughts are telling me that she's here
quintessential hilda fandom song. how could i not?
17. she's got a new spell - billy bragg
one minute she says, she's gone to get the cat in next thing i know, she's mumbling in latin she cut the stars out of the sky and baked them in a pie, that's how i know she stole the scene and the scenery the script and the machinery, that's how i know that she's got a new spell
another witch's lover's song.. all that magic in one household can't be good.
18. lovers rock - tv girl
are you sick of me? would you like to be?
this song is just so chilled and lovely like a quiet night in. but captures the nerves and uncertainty of dating as well
19. riches and wonders - the mountain goats
we write letters to each other, invent secrets to confess to i learn foreign and exotic terms of endearment by which to address you we feed fresh fruit to one another we stay up all night and i am healthy, i am whole, but i have poor impulse control and i want to go home but i am home we are strong, we are faithful we are guardians of a rare thing we are filled with riches and wonders our love keeps the things it finds
domesticity and true love at its greatest. i love tmg!!
20. settin' the woods on fire - hank williams
you're my gal and i'm your feller dress up in your frock of yeller i'll look swell, but you'll look sweller! tonight we're settin' the woods on fire
off some country records johanna would 'co-own' with woodman. so fun. this gets put on in the pearson household when they have a family evening in
21. acolyte - slaughter beach, dog
annie, i want you to marry me we'll wait a few years i don't mean to frighten you i just want to be clear. man, it cuts like a dull knife when you're young and you're told 'makes sense when you're older,' darling, let's get old
not much to say on this one. i luv this song :-)
22. all i want is you - barry louis polisar
if you were a river in the mountains tall the rumble of your water would be my call if you were the winter i know i'd be the snow just as long as you were with me when the cold winds blow
juno soundtrack to finish it off :-) the core of sketchbook to me is joy & comfort & nature & magic
i hope u guys enjoyed this! lmk what you think of these interpretations! show me some lyrics you think about!

For the final day of @nestaarcheronweek, I've curated a playlist for our music loving girl. I wanted to showcase Nesta's complexities and her deep love for music with songs of strength, anger, loss, and love. Listen to it here! And come for a lyrical deep dive behind the cut!
Fresh Laundry-Allie X
You said you're always on my side But what if my side has changed too much? Then tell me, who am I? You said you're always on my side But what if my side has lived too long? Something has to die Who am I?
Fury Oh Fury-Nico Vega
Fury, oh fury don't you misguide me I need my wits to set me free Fury, oh fury don't you misguide me I need my wits to set me free
Little Dark Age-MGMT
Breathing in the dark, lying on its side The ruins of the dead painted with a scar And the more I straighten out, the less it wants to try The feelings start to rot one wink at a time Forgiving who you are for what you stand to gain Just know that if you hide, it doesn't go away
I Love You, But I Need Another Year-Liza Anne
I don't think enough Before I say too much I'm digging my own grave With all the shit I say I keep my head high Kinda like a lie I say I'm doing fine Even when I'm losing my mind
The Fruits-Paris Paloma
As you eat it up whole My body and my blood You've claimed it now, so come drink up And there's no need to be concerned About what's left when you are done because You've got me on my knees to pray Or play some other pleasing role But never wonder Where I must have learnt it all
Alpha Shallows-Laura Marling
But the grey in this city is too much to bear The grey in this city is too much to bear And I believe you are meant to be seen but not to be understood
It's going to be pretty tough when you leave You'll help to take a little part of me To make sure you don't treat yourself mean And I want to see all that you'll see
What's Wrong-PVRIS
I know it's so wrong but I'm so far gone Don't need you to tell me I'm so cynical Quit being so over-skeptical Don't need a metaphor for you to know I'm miserable
Peacemaker-Jesca Hoop
Put down your peacemaker blue Warrior Warrior Beaten and broken and bruised Warrior Warrior Come and I'll unlock your chain link armour Seven baths absolve your blood stained honor Your honor Tell the water of
Human-Oh Land
I don't love you human You remind me of the things I hate in me I don't love you human Cause You show me how imperfect I can be Human You're so lonely lonely lonely
Smokestacks-LAYLA
You got eyes so azure You got blood orange skin And there's a spark in your centre that's piercing me in I got a night-time shudder and a lion within I got a brain-tricked hunger and you're pulling me in
Willow Tree March-The Paper Kites
You fall through the trees And you pray with your knees on the ground For the things that you need With your lust and your greed weighing down And you weaken your love And you hold it above your head Success is a song of the heart, not a song of your head
Mountain at My Gates-Foals
I see a mountain in my way It's looming larger by the day I see a darkness in my fate I'll drive my car without the brakes
Oh, gimme some time Show me the foothold from which I can climb Yeah, when I feel low You show me a signpost for where I should go
Rabbit Will Run-Iron and Wine
We've all traded lovers and woke up alone And we've clapped for the king though our fingers were cold And I still have a prayer 'cause I love what I cannot control
Water Water-Empress Of
You're just a heart to hold, you're easy to impress I want to care much more, but I'm feeling less awake You're just a heart to break, easy to manipulate I want to care much more, but I'm feeling less and less
Hold On, Hold On-Neko Case
The most tender place in my heart is for strangers I know it's unkind, but my own blood is much too dangerous Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Shake it Out-Florence + the Machine
And I am done with my graceless heart So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart 'Cause I like to keep my issues drawn It's always darkest before the dawn

idk if this has been mentioned in an interview or somethin somewhere im missing, and im still newish to splatoon n going through its wiki and stuff, so bear with me and take what i say with a grain of salt alright? okay.
so in off the hook's songs, (most of the time) marina sings in Octoling language (hereby referred to as Octarian) and Pearl sings in inkling langauge (hereby referred to as Inklish). we know this, and its great.
and in the offical lyrics for off the hook's songs, we know that Pearl's lyrics are written in Hiragana, and Marina's in katakana, because Pearl's singing in Inklish, and Katakana is consistently used in the jp version of splatoon to convey Octarian. it's what dj octavio and brainwashed callie speak in, afaik.
(what is Hiragana and what is Katakana, for those who do not know.)
and i love all that lil details stuff, and was like, 'oh you know what, i wonder if shiver sings in octarian bcs she's an octoling, or inklish since she was raised on the surface.'. so i went and checked, low and behold she's singing in hiragana..... kind of.
see the thing is, as far as i can tell via referncing big betrayal and anarchy rainbow, shiver does sing in hiragana, when she's singing Alone. when it's a shiver solo, it's hiragana. but when singing with frye, or frye and big man, they're singing in Katakana.
and frye always sings in Katakana, as far as i can find atm.
so... wwwhat's going on there? if it was just big man i'd write it off as like, oh he's speaking Ray Language or whatever and that's how they convey that too. but... frye? is frye singing in octarian? is shiver singing in inklish? is it just reversed in splatoon three? something entirely different?
i've got no idea I just thought i'd share bcs a) someone may know more than me and can correct me about things b) idk how many people know this lkike is this a common thing or do i just spend too much time on the wiki. so in case ppl dont know now u do =)

I love all the effort you put into your ocs, how do you manage to get ideas for lyrics and mvs??? its all super impressive
thank you so much!! when it comes to mvs, i just kind of.. try to think of a theme the character already has or a theme that would look cool in their mv, usually that theme is somehow associated with their personality, interests, backstories or even simply their designs and name meanings! (like for example, eiko met her first love online, so two of her mvs have something to do with technology, but she's also a part-time model and has an interest in fashion, so there's a mannequin in her first mv as well) like i just kind of try to get into their brains and think of how they would see their crime and their life in general, so i try my best to make the mvs show their personalities well and make them feel different from each other (like shun's mvs have a lot of "glitchy" effects, they're supposed to feel weird and surreal, two of akio's mvs have a royal theme/aesthetic, etc).
also i try to make each mv reveal something the last one didn't, like the first riku mv showed that he was very popular, but he still wasn't happy, and his second mv showed that he was more than okay with using his popularity for some really bad things. i think kei's mvs are the best example, since his first mv is supposed to make him look like "the bad guy", meanwhile his second mv is supposed to make him look like the victim (and judging by 100% guilty and 100% inno verdicts, it went. well). it's getting a bit hard to do so right now, as i'm in the middle of writing the season 3 vds and i feel like i have to reveal stuff as quickly as possible and some of the characters' crimes have basically been solved (like naomi's, and in asahi's case the only thing we don't know is the motive).. but i've decided to use vds and mvs as two different tools: vds are more about what the character would reveal about their crime if they were asked (or forced to talk) and mvs are more about what they'd either not talk about or what they want the audience to know, but can't talk about for some reason.
also i just like to add things that i'd like to see more in the canongram mvs! like the whole thing with the victim/side character povs or certain themes and aesthetics, all of that stuff.
as for the lyrics, it actually takes me a lot of time to write them, like i always write the actual mv first and then like a day or two later i write the lyrics 😭😭 i just kinda go with what i think sounds cool or what the character would say (like in shun's future season 3 mv, he literally forgets what the song was about). also i take inspiration from the canongram song lyrics as well and kinda try to write something similar to them while still adding something original?? hope that makes sense sjsdkslsl

hello! im reasonably new to your account and i just saw that you have an arcana playlist (love the idea of that) and i dont know if you still take suggestions for the playlist, but in case you do, i have a few songs that remind me of characters (aka just Muriel, like literally just him) that might be of use :)
On the Mountain Tall - the Oh Hellos, not only does the name and the general vibe of the song fit him but there are a few lyrics in it like "I know you want me to be afraid, I know you want me to love you" "Up out of the grave of an angry ghost, Firing bricks from broken canon and prose, To build a wall so high it reaches the heavens in the sky" "Still you beat your drums, Raising holy war with every strum, Shouting down the quiet kingdom come, Brushing at your fingers, hoping you'll come around" that honestly just fit very very well
How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead cus its sad as fuck. "I'm not here, This isn't happening, I'm not here, I'm not here, In a little while, I'll be gone, The moment's already passed, Yeah, it's gone", if thats not a man dissociating through traumatic expiriences i dont know what is. The song keeps repeating "im not here", and seeing how Muriel chose to have a curse that makes people forget him, it is very fitting
Trapdoor - Twenty One Pilots, i have had an arcana obsession since like? 2019? when i was still a massive fan of this band, and this song always reminded me of muriel. "Take me out and finish this waste of a life, Everyone one gather around for a show, Watch as this man disappears as we know, Do me a favor and try to ignore, When you watch him fall through a blatant trapdoor, 'Cause nobody know his life (i always thought it was "he's alive")", it gives the vibes of how the people of vesuvia did Not Give A Shit About him. They just thought hed willingly murder so many people, nobody saw the literal chains he was stuck in and thought "hmm maybe hes being forced to do this"
No Suprises - Radiohead, it reminds me of how Muriel pulled away from all society after he fled from the colosseum. It reminds me of how he was so scared and so ashamed to interact with people, how he just wanted some silent and rest after all the horrible things he went though, not just in the colosseum but his entire youth. "You look so tired, unhappy. Bring down the government, They don't, they don't speak for us. I'll take a quiet life, A handshake of carbon monoxide, No alarms and no surprises, No alarms and no surprises, No alarms and no surprises, Silent, Silent", to me the song always feels like it needs to be sung while sobbing.
Sleep - My Chemical Romance, i 100% believe Muriel has so many nightmares, i mean its even shown in his route once. A symptom of ptsd is night terrors, and seeing what the guy has lived through theres no way he goes to sleep normally. I think this song catches the vibe of this pretty well.
PTSD - Joost, literally just a (dutch) song about ptsd. its a massive vibe and cus i hc that Muriel has ptsd i thought it be fitting
Me? Having massive brainrot abt Muriel? perhaps...
i hope this can be useful for your playlist!! (also if youd like i can give more of this, it is very fun to do lol)
@canofpeaches00000 woah, these are all awesome suggestions! I really appreciate how you broke down the lyrics and added context to them too, it doubled my capacity to enjoy them! ^.^
I've added them to the playlist and I'm putting them on the tag, thank you for all the recommendations friend! :D

fave lyrics from "take a break"?
we're on take a break & my lovely anon is also taking a break... interesting! ok, back to the lyrics:
my dearest, angelica, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day, i trust you'll understand the reference to another scottish tragedy without my having to name the play, they think me macbeth, & ambition is my folly, i'm a polymath, a pain in the ass, a massive pain, madison is banquo, jefferson's macduff & birnam wood is congress on its way to dunsinane - ok but this is insane everybody agrees
in a letter i received from you two weeks ago i noticed a comma in the middle of a phrase, it changed the meaning, did you intend this? one stroke & you've consumed my waking days, it says: my dearest, angelica, with a comma after "dearest", you've written my dearest, angelica... - sorry, i can't help but quote lorde here, "i overthink your punctuation use, not my fault, just a thing that my mind do" cause SAME, i've always been like this so bonus points for lin again he's the love of my life in case you can't tell
angelica, tell this man john adams spends the summer with his family/angelica, tell my wife john adams doesn't have a real job anyway - mostly because it's so damn funny hshshshhs
honorable mention: philip's rap & hammy's hey our kid is pretty great at the end of it cause it's soooo cute
bonus: lin's demo for today! because it's a little bit different than the final version & also it's so damn funny to hear lin as philip hshshshsh (as usual, all the characters are played by him so go have a laugh).

I Won't Say (I'm in Love)
Written By: Alan Menken & David Zippel
Artist: Susan Egan with Roz Ryan, Cheryl Freeman, Lillias White, Vanéese Y. Thomas & LaChanze for Hercules
Released: 1997
From the 1997 Disney movie Hercules, “I Won’t Say (I’m In Love)” is the movie’s featured love ballad. After a romantic date with Hercules, Meg expresses her conflicting emotions through song (with some back up from the Muses). Hurt before and technically working for Herc’s arch nemesis, this song demonstrates Meg’s reluctance to get into another relationship that (in her mind) can only end badly.
[MEG] If there's a prize for rotten judgment I guess I've already won that No man is worth the aggravation That's ancient history, been there, done that [MUSES, MEG] Who d'you think you're kiddin'? He's the earth and heaven to you Try to keep it hidden Honey, we can see right through you (Oh no) Girl, you can't conceal it We know how you feel and who you're thinkin' of [MEG] Oh No chance, no way I won't say it, no, no [MUSES] You swoon, you sigh Why deny it? Uh-oh [MEG] It's too cliché I won't say I'm in love [MUSES] Shoo-do, shoo-do, ooh [MEG, with MUSES] I thought my heart had learned its lesson It feels so good when you start out My head is screaming, "Get a grip, girl" "Unless you're dyin' to cry your heart out" Oh [MUSES, MEG] You keep on denying Who you are and how you're feeling Baby, we're not buying Hon, we saw you hit the ceiling (Oh no) Face it like a grown-up When ya gonna own up That you got, got, got it bad? [MEG] Whoa No chance, no way I won't say it, no, no [MUSES] Give up, give in Check the grin, you're in love [MEG] This scene won't play I won't say I'm in love [MUSES] You're doin' flips Read our lips, you're in love [MEG, MUSES] You're way off base (Shoo-do, shoo-do) I won't say it (She won't say it, no) Get off my case (Sha-da, sha-da) I won't say it [MUSES] Girl, don't be proud It's okay, you're in love [MEG] Oh At least, out loud I won't say I'm in love [MUSES] Shoo-do, shoo-do, shoo-do, shoo-do Sha-la-la-la-la-la, ah

God Only Knows
Written By: Brian Wilson & Tony Asher
Artist: The Beach Boys
Released: 1966
“God Only Knows” is a song by American rock band The Beach Boys. It is the eighth track on the group’s 11th studio album, Pet Sounds, and one of their most widely recognized songs. “God Only Knows” was composed and produced by Brian Wilson. Tony Asher helped Brian with the lyrics. Carl Wilson sang lead, and Bruce Johnston sang harmony vocals with Brian in the outro. The song broke new ground in many ways. It was one of the first commercial songs to use the word ‘God’ in its title. As producer, Brian Wilson used many unorthodox instruments, including the harpsichord and French horns that are heard in the song’s famous introduction. Although The Beatles engaged in a friendly rivalry with the Beach Boys based on mutual respect, Paul McCartney called this song the best song ever written.
[Verse 1: Carl Wilson] I may not always love you But long as there are stars above you You never need to doubt it I'll make you so sure about it [Refrain: Carl Wilson] God only knows what I'd be without you [Verse 2: Carl Wilson] If you should ever leave me Well, life would still go on, believe me The world could show nothing to me So what good would living do me? [Refrain: Carl Wilson] God only knows what I'd be without you [Interlude: Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson, and Bruce Johnston] Ooh, ooh Do, do, do, do, do, do, do Bow, buh-bow, buh-bow, buh-bow (Do, do, do, do) Buh-bow, buh-bow, buh-bow (Do, do, do, do, do, do) Buh-bow, buh-bow, buh-bow, buh-bow (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) [Refrain: Carl Wilson] God only knows what I'd be without you [Verse 3: Carl Wilson] If you should ever leave me Well, life would still go on, believe me The world could show nothing to me So what good would living do me? [Chorus: Carl Wilson] God only knows what I'd be without you [Outro: Carl Wilson with Brian Wilson and Bruce Johnston] God only knows what I'd be without you God only knows what I'd be without you God only knows what I'd be without you (What I'd be) God only knows what I'd be without you (God only knows) God only knows what I'd be without you (What I'd be) God only knows what I'd be without you (God only knows) God only knows what I'd be without you (What I'd be) God only knows what I'd be without you (God only knows) God only knows what I'd be without you (What I'd be) God only knows what I'd be without you (God only knows) God only knows what I'd be without you (What I'd be) God only knows what I'd be without you (God only knows)

I've sat on this for FAR too long... Here are my thoughts/review for "Coco Moon" by Owl City!
A while ago, I stated that I was planning to make a YouTube video discussing both the ARG and Coco Moon. However, life happened (as it always does), and while I haven't scrapped the idea per se, I do want to share my thoughts on the album sooner rather than later. So here are my thoughts on Coco Moon!
Warning: Long post ahead!
Shortly after the full album came out, Adam made a TikTok describing this album as perhaps his favorite one he has ever put out. And honestly, I can see why! On first listen, while I will admit the more religious elements threw me for a loop after the more secular-sounding singles (as well as the first time Adam said "hell" in any song), I can honestly say there wasn't a song that I disliked, which is a first for me. Even back to Ocean Eyes, there was at least one song that I didn't like, even if it wound up later growing on me. Dental Care, Kamikaze, Bombshell Blonde, Unbelievable, and of course, ALL MY FRIENDS were songs I didn't like for one reason or another upon first listen. Save for All My Friends, those songs have all grown on me. Thankfully, that hasn't happened on Coco Moon. I've liked all songs from the beginning, and my appreciation for the album has only grown with time.
If I have any criticism for the album, it would likely be the way the tracklist is arranged. I'm not sure if there is another way of reorganizing this album so it flows better (and I have tried several times), but my main gripe is that the album ends with My Muse. It's a bit like if Maybe I'm Dreaming ended on This is the Future. Without West Coast Friendship, you're just left yearning for the next song, and the album feels incomplete. That's how I feel with Coco Moon. I know the more likely complaint from critics regarding this album is the run time. While Cinematic suffers from the sheer number of songs on the album, Coco Moon's problem, according to some critics, is that nearly every song is too long. The average length of each song on Coco Moon is 5 minutes, but I think none of the songs overstay its welcome. And each song has something to offer.
The final thing I'll say before I dive into each song is that this seems to better capture the old-school Owl City magic and charm than Cinematic did. However, a lot of the songs are, in fact, story based. Cinematic is as well, but I think the main issue with Cinematic is that the songs are so literal that its hard to find entertaining, save for a few songs. HOWEVER, Coco Moon is much better at storytelling. Maybe it's because very few songs are autobiographical, or maybe Adam just improved as a songwriter. Whatever the case is, it's like he listened to some of the critiques on Cinematic and tweaked his process when creating the songs on Coco Moon. It's also easily one of the best produced albums from Adam. It's really a great listen.
The first song on the album is Adam, Check Please. I don't think it's strong as far as being the opening track on an album, but it's still a great song. I will say that as a single, I wasn't as fond of the song at first. It seemed to skirt too close to the Cinematic territory lyrically. However, the lyrics did grow on me the more I listened to it. You can see why in this Reddit post I made when the Studio Door opened for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/OWLCITY/comments/10m8ld1/my_take_on_the_lyrics_to_adam_check_please/
Adam, Check Please has a lot of tempo changes and is one of Adam's best produced tracks. All in all, it's a fun song and a great start to the album (even if it's not the best choice for that position in the tracklist).
That title should go to the next song, Under the Circus Lights. This is probably my favorite song from the album (but there are a lot more songs I really love). For starters, it feels like a Maybe I'm Dreaming track... between "the girl on the flying trapeze" sounding a bit like "a gymnast happily swinging on the uneven bars tucked in a somersault" (Super Honeymoon), the whimsical description of falling in love, and the slightly sad and heartbreaking twist at the end. Also, holy key changes, Batman! Adam once again shows his skills at producing songs. It's also one of the only songs who's Instagram post contains music similar to what's in the actual song its teasing. Upon first hearing ringmaster Adam saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the most spectacular show on earth!", I immediately connected to Adam's tweet about this being the album it was meant to be. Plus, the scores influence is great. I dare you to find something bad about this song; it's epic and beautiful!
Then, there's Kelly Time, the other song who has music similar to its Instagram teaser. However, this was the first song where I noticed the mix is different from the single version. The harmonies are louder, and the final chorus has a synth choir playing chords, which is either not there or buried in the mix on the single version. But overall, it doesn't detract from the song. Only Adam could come up with the idea to retell the film Cast Away in song form from the perspective of Wilson the volleyball. Plus, the rap doesn't sound like a rap. I get a lot of All My Friends (Alt. Version) vibes from this track. It's like Adam listened to the criticism of All My Friends and created a track that's much better. Plus, it's the first time in a long time that I feel the lead single for the album fits. The last time I can think that happened is for Alligator Sky from All Things Bright and Beautiful. Other albums either had the better lead single as the second single instead (Vanilla Twilight and Shooting Star), or had songs that are forgettable (Verge) or downright irritating (All My Friends). Kelly Time nails it, and it best gives a representation of what the album is like and got people pumped for the then-upcoming album. Plus, the song was released 1504 days after his final tour appearance for the Cinematic tour. This makes the song sort of poetic. I don't know if that was the long-term plan or if it just happened, but I find it serendipitous.
Now, we get to Field Notes. If I'm being honest, after the three songs we've heard so far on the album (four if you count the final single Vitamin Sea), the religious message of the song threw me for a loop. All of those songs were secular, even if Kelly Time had some faith-based inspiration (if the commentary is anything to go by). As someone who has (mostly) stopped listening to Contemporary Christian music (with a few exceptions), I wasn't prepared for a more faith-based album. At least this song doesn't fall into the cliché worship song territory so many of today's Christian songs tend to fall in.
The other thing that I found... strange was Adam's use of the word "hell" in this song. I mean, it is a religious song, but the way it was used makes it sound less like it's referring to the literal place of hell and more so closer to using it as an expletive. Now, it's more innocent than other words, I will admit. It's not me becoming a Kidz Bop mom or anything like that. I just find it odd as someone who associates Adam and his music with innocence. I'm almost wondering if part of the reason Adam took so long to release the follow-up to Cinematic is because he was looking for a team to work with for Coco Moon. I can see many secular pop management teams turn him down for being too religious, and I can also see many religious agencies turn him down as well due to his use of the word "hell" here and in The Tornado. But at least Adam didn't start dropping F-bombs all over the place, so there's that. I also think Adam found the right team with Rise Up Artists. They have been very nice to me in my few times of brief correspondence with Adam's new manager. I hope he stays with them long-term.
But anyway, on the whole, Field Notes isn't that bad of a song. Adam really took one of Jesus's parables and told it with more space than it takes in the Gospel of Matthew:
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and reburied; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."
(Matthew 13:44 NRSVUE)
It's not as interesting of a song as others on the record, at least where the lyrics are concerned. However, right when you think the song is about to end, it instead transitions into what should be a brief instrumental interlude. And that interlude is impressive! It reminds me of some of the old-school instrumentals from Owl City's early discography. If there's any reason not to skip the song, it's this interlude!
But then we go from one of Adam's weakest Christian songs to his best one in Sons of Thunder. Yes, I didn't say "one of the best Christian songs from Adam"; I really mean that Sons of Thunder is Adam's BEST Christian song in his entire discography. There are many things I like about it. From its anthemic nature to some of the lyrics that really speak to me as an autistic Christian, it's probably my second favorite song from the entire album (but it's really close between this and Under the Circus Lights). Some of the lyrics I like include:
Oh, we are the odd music makers We are the dreamers of unusual dreams We all face the forces of nature But bravely, we'll take great leaps of faith
...and:
We are the heirs of adventure And we are explorers of wondrous, new worlds We are the gifted inventors And even though we are strange and exquisitely scarred We don't need to pretend to be anything we aren't
The latter is actually on my Facebook cover photo. That's how much this song speaks to me!
And before I continue on about this song, one thing I wish to address is the interpretation by some Christians that this song is referring to The Rapture. But I don't see it that way for a few reasons. For starters, in Adam's Instagram post about the song, he mentioned nothing about it. But perhaps the biggest reason is because I don't believe in The Rapture... At least as far as how some people interpret it. Yes, the world is going to end, and yes, Jesus is going to come again. There might even be a singular anti-Christ before the end comes. However, I describe my beliefs as amillennial. That means I don't believe in the traditional pre-millennial interpretation of the End Times (as in a pre-tribulation Rapture followed by the rein of the Anti-Christ for 7 years, then the return of Jesus, the Ressurection of all Believers, a literal 1000-year period of Jesus reigning on Earth, the defeat of Satan, the Resurrection of the Unbelievers, and the Final Judgment). Rather, I believe that the "1000-year reign" described in Revelation is symbolic of the current age, and when Jesus returns, the Resurrection of everyone (not just believers) will occur, and then the Final Judgment.
I actually find this more comforting and in line with what the Early Church believed. Consider the logic of Jefferson Bethke (the person behind the "Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus" video), as described in his book It's Not What You Think: If the "core claim" of Christianity is something like "Jesus died for your sins, and if you believe that, you go to Heaven when you die," Romans wouldn't be persecuting Christians to the point of death to the extent described in the Book of Acts. But if the core claim of Christianity is "Jesus is King right now," that would imply to ancient Romans that Caesar is not King. That would be a bit like saying "Joe Biden isn't the President of the United States right now; Jesus is." (And believe me: It was especially helpful to remember that Jesus is on the Throne and in control of this world when someone like Trump was President.) And because to Christians, to die is to gain, the fear of death (the main cudgel of oppressive regimes like the Roman Empire) loses its power to control people. That's why ancient Romans were so opposed to Christianity in the 1st Century.
But I digress. I do see a lot of Heavenly imagery in Sons of Thunder. Indeed, the song reminds me of how important my faith is as an autistic Christian. As someone who constantly feels like an outsider or misfit in the world, who regularly needs to mask who they really are in an attempt to fit in, Sons of Thunder is a reminder that God sees who we really are and loves us unconditionally. Additionally, through Jesus, we have hope that we will live forever with Him in Heaven. I know some of these themes also apply to LGBTQ+ people, and even queer non-Christians find solace in this song's message. And to queer Christians, they find solace much in the way many neurodivergent people like myself feel. Someone best described this song as "the Christian anthem to those that feel like outsiders". This is exactly how I feel whenever I listen to this song, and it's been an amazing comfort to me and my faith.
Now, I know some people have said that they were on board for how abstract the song feels at first as it relates to its religious theme, only to do a complete 180 and go full-blown religious towards the end with the lines, "So take heart wild one / For there is a God / Who loves you to death / No matter what you've done / So don't lose hope / For He will lead you home". Personally, I don't think this is as off-putting as the other religious songs, including Field Notes where the religious theme seems to come out of nowhere upon first listen. But here, Sons of Thunder is right on par with Galaxies, which doesn't seem religious at first until the bridge. If the only difference is that Galaxies says, "For He is the saving grace of the galaxies," instead of "For God is the saving grace of the galaxies," then I don't know what to tell you. This song is miles ahead better compared to something like "My Everything". While I could see it being used in Worship, I don't see it exclusively as a Worship song, and it's certainly not all "Hallelujah, God is good, praise Jesus, etc." that much modern CCM has turned into. That is a plus in my book.
But I've taken enough time on this song. Just know when I listened to this song for the first time, I was blown away by how great of a song it is. I kid you not, right as this song was finishing, I thought, "That song was such a highlight! The next song is going to have a hard time living up to this song..."
Tumblr media
Yeah... Safe to say, I was not prepared for how hard The Tornado was going to go! This song makes the album skirt into Twenty One Pilots territory, especially with that screamo section! Also, the use of the word "hell" here doesn't seem as out of place as it did in Field Notes. There also is some religious imagery in this song, but while it seems to come out of nowhere, it also doesn't feel out of place. Someone on Reddit also pointed out how The Tornado could be symbolic of an autism meltdown, and I can totally see that. I don't know if that was Adam's intent, but I believe this interpretation has merit. It's a fantastic song (and not at all Adam's cringy attempt at a Bohemian Rhapsody moment... jk I love you Jon from ARTV!) and while I might say that it's a tad overrated within the fandom, I really do enjoy it!
Now, how would I describe the next song, Vitamin Sea? You know the Ocean Eyes-era single Vanilla Twilight? And how Up All Night would be that song had it appeared on The Midsummer Station? I'd describe Vitamin Sea as sort of the opposite... taking a single from The Midsummer Station, Good Time, and turning it into a song that would feel at home on Ocean Eyes. Plus, both songs are duets: Good Time with Carly Rae Jepsen, and Vitamin Sea with Abb-- wait, sorry, (checks liner notes) Colbi McCallister. (More on this later)
The one thing I will say is after the roller coaster of a song that is The Tornado, Vitamin Sea feels a bit out of place. We go from a dramatic, metaphorical storm to wishing to be on a vacation in Hawaii? But it's still a solid song... even if radio listeners in Northeast Wisconsin don't particularly like it. The song is definitely close to "Song of the Summer" territory lyrically. And musically, it sounds like a more rock-leaning version of The Yacht Club. This is the most dreamy song that would fit on Ocean Eyes. It's my favorite of the three pre-release singles (although Kelly Time is a close second). The only strange thing about it is that its Instagram teaser, Take Me Back, sounds nothing like Vitamin Sea to me. I did think it could work as an extended intro leading into the final song, but other than that, it just seems the most out of place compared to the actual song. Still, Vitamin Sea is definitely a highlight for me.
Now, what can I say about Dinosaur Park? Well, it's a good song, but it also was the song that took the longest for me to warm up to. I think that's in part due to the fact the first few verses sound closer to a Scores-influenced Sky Sailing track instead of a Scores-influenced Owl City track. It's like the lyrics are so dreamy and depict what should sound like a bombastic Owl City track, but instead, it's very stripped back. (Maybe there's an alternate version that isn't as stripped back? After all, this is the one that was teased through my favorite Instagram teaser, Signs of Life.)
However, I do love that breakdown after the second chorus. This sounds very Euro-dance-influenced. I almost like that section better than the other sections. Thankfully, it shows up again after the final chorus. To me, it sounds like Sky Sailing meets Euro-dance and not Owl City. This further blurs the lines between the two projects and it makes me wonder if Adam could even find a differentiating thing between the two if he released a follow-up to An Airplane Carried Me to Bed. But it's still an amazing song. Lyrically, it depicts a Toy Story-esque scenario about Dinosaur Park in Rapid City, South Dakota. It's a real-life park with giant dinosaur statues, and the song imagines if they come to life, Night of the Museum-style, when no one's visiting the park at night. That sounds like the perfect topic for Adam to cover in a song, and he delivers on it! This is by far the longest song on the album, but it still doesn't overstay its welcome.
Then, we move on to Learn How to Surf. What's ironic to me is that this is the most radio-friendly song on the entire album, but it was never a single. Instead, they created butchered radio edits of Vitamin Sea and Kelly Time, and in the case of the latter, doesn't even flow together as a story compared to the original album version. (Both of these versions are available on YouTube if you want to check them out). But I digress. Learn How to Surf also sounds like it could be a song that appears during the end credits of a family-friendly movie where surfing somehow comes up.
Musically, I love that retro-sounding percussive record skip. It reminds me of Smash Mouth's All Star. It feels very 90s-esque, but not in a heavy-handed way like in Unbelievable. Lyrically, we actually heard much of the first chorus in a preview for the entire album. It sounded very metaphorical, comparing the troubles of life and getting through them to surfing. (If that one old blog reader who asked me anonymously years ago for a song about if Adam had a song with a similar theme... if you're still out there, then this is that song!) However, it's also strange that it seems to tell a story of Adam (or some other dude and Adam takes their point of view for this song) who sees a heavily tattooed lady and asks them what the tattoos mean. It just seemed to come out of nowhere given what we heard from the chorus in that preview. But at the same time, it did give me fodder for a meme on Discord's listening party for the album:
Tumblr media
Still, I really do enjoy it. It sounds like typical motivational Adam, in the vein of songs like Shooting Star and Beautiful Times. This is probably my third favorite song from the album.
Now, as we approach the final two songs on the album, it seems to slow down too much. This is especially true considering I had the long-shot hope that the final song would be more upbeat following the next song, The Meadow Lark. Now, I don't dislike The Meadow Lark (But I do have a pet peeve whenever I see people type out this song's title as "The Meadowlark"). In fact, I do like the song's story and themes of forgiveness and grace. And I wouldn't speed up this song in any way.
Lyrically, the song is about someone at war who meets an enemy soldier. They both aim their guns at each other, each prepared to shoot the other. Then, a bird (presumably a meadow lark, given the song title) arrives on the scene and later is joined by more. They start singing as if nothing was happening. But my one critique is that much like Field Notes, the religious 180 comes out of nowhere. Suddenly, one of the soldiers hears from God to "love your enemy", echoing Jesus's words in Matthew 5:43-45 (NRSVUE):
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
This isn't as egregious as Field Notes. Perhaps it's because it tells a full-blown original story set in a war (presumably the Civil War, given how it borrows the melody from the Adam's score album Courdory Road), as opposed to Field Notes, which is just a dramatization of a one-verse parable from Jesus. And I do like the song's message, especially given how it ends: With the soldier lowering his gun, showing him "yield on bended knee". This moves the soldier to do the same and turn away. To me, the whole song sounds very similar to the plot in the Doctor Who Christmas special "Twice Upon a Time", except that story is set during World War I. I won't go into detail as to how they're similar, as this post is already long enough, but if you're a Whovian, you'll know why I said this. All in all, it's a beautiful song and very emotional.
Finally, we reach the closing song on the album: My Muse. It's a sweet, slow love song. This song makes a stunning announcement (even though some people in the fandom, including myself, knew this already), which also explains why Abbey is credited under the names Colbi McCallister and Sissy Willow instead of her own (apart from her general desire for privacy after public backlash for her now-deleted YouTube videos on Cinematic). That announcement? Adam and Abbey got married! Many HootOwls could see this being used as the first dance song at a wedding.
With that said, I'm just going to come out and say it: Be Brave is a better song than My Muse. My Muse could be seen as Be Brave, Part 2, but it just doesn't have the same level of emotional and poetic storytelling that Be Brave shows. My Muse is more to the point and literal, but Be Brave feels like an Owl City song. In fact, I thought for sure Adam would have sung Be Brave and then transition into My Muse on the To The Moon tour, but that never happened. That would have been cool. But My Muse by itself doesn't do it for me the same way Be Brave does. Plus, it being the final song on the album doesn't help.
With all that said, I do like the song. It's sweet and innocent enough, and it's one of the few songs from Adam that I could see a couple slow dance to. The first verse recaps what happened in Be Brave, the second talks about their wedding day, and the third talks about the future. Musically, it's just a simple piano ballad with backing vocals from Abbey herself. It's also the shortest song on the album. I just don't think it works as a closing album moment. Most times I listen to Coco Moon, I add Up to the Cloud to the queue, and then it feels complete. But as it stands, My Muse doesn't seem as memorable as other moments on the album, and that's a problem.
Overall, the album Coco Moon can feel bloated given its lengthy runtime, but no song overstays its welcome even though most songs are over 5 minutes. It's also a solid album, and also Adam's best release since All Things Bright and Beautiful. Cinematic didn't age as well as I thought it would, given that the album is extremely long (even if the average song length isn't compared to Coco Moon), and the fact that I typically only listen to one or two songs from Cinematic at a time as opposed to the full album in one sitting. I can more easily do that with Coco Moon. Still, Coco Moon isn't a perfect album, given a few questionable choices and a strange tracklist arrangement. But I do like it, and I'd give this an 8.5/10. (I probably would have given this a 10/10 closer to release time, but now that I've sat on it for a bit longer, I feel more confident giving a lower rating. It's still probably my top album of the year.)
Wow! If you made it all the way through this post, thank you for reading this rambling attempt at a review. This has been saved partially in drafts for a long time. Please let me know what you think of the album. I appreciate you taking the time to read this! Thank you!!

warnings: none, ig? fluff and angst, not proofread (oops)
pairing: steve harrington x fem!reader
w/c: 1.9k (i just couldn't stop i'm so sorry)
steve could see right through you.
and he was very proud to say that he was the only person that knew you so well. of course that didn't come easily. he's had years of practice.
it came with being your best friend since you were sixteen, up until now, at nineteen years old, and now your friendship's developed into something more.
in reality, though, steve firmly believed he had some sort of gift when it came to you. he could almost feel whatever mood you were in radiating from your body and flying towards him.
it was like, apart from the cedar and apple scent he smelled on you every time you were near him, god, that intoxicating scent of yours, he could smell the mood you were in at that exact moment. and he'd swear to robin that no, it wasn't as creepy as he made it sound.
he really did believe he could tell when you weren't feeling your best. and it actually helped him make you feel better without having you tell him what's happening inside of that pretty head of yours, because he knows damn well you wouldn't tell him a thing.
he'd buy you flowers, offer to give you a massage, or even bring your favourite corny rom-com from family video to watch with you. no matter how much he hated the movie, he'd learn to love it with how many times you've made him watch it.
but, today, you were giving steve the silent treatment. not a single word heard from you since you've last spoken through the phone yesterday, and he couldn't help the little tingle he felt in his upper arms, the limbs growing numb in worry. he couldn't even explain the feeling.
last night you sounded just fine during your usual late-night phone call. should he have paid more attention to you? your tone? if you've spoken less than usual? how many pet names you've told him through the phone?
had he done something to upset you? 'cause, as good as steve was reading your expressions and your mood, he really had no idea what was going on with you.
so he drove directly to your house after his shift at work ended, grabbing the little ceramic turtle that laid beside your front door, a big, white-pearl smile on its lips that freaked steve out every single time, and was quick to grab the spare key that was hidden beneath, shuddering when he placed the small, greenish figure back down, and the brown eyed could have sworn he saw the damned frog's eyes following his moves.
he gave it a glare, opening the door carefully as not to make any noise in case you were sleeping, closing it behind him and locked it with the key, letting the key chain swing shortly, and took his shoes off and laid them under the coat rack next to the door.
your parents weren't home— something about an anniversary trip, he recalled you telling him— so he relaxed that he didn't have to deal with your dad interrogating him about what he had planned for the rest of his life with that stern look of his that made the little hairs in steve's arms raise. yeah, your father could be quite intimidating when he wanted to.
he climbed up the stairs, sock-clad feet barely making any noise against the wooden floor of your home, and he just begged to remember correctly which stairs squeaked so he could avoid them; you've always been a light sleeper.
he reached your room, your door completely closed, wich made steve frown. you never usually closed your door completely if there wasn't anyone home at all, and he was almost certain that you knew that you were home alone.
he softly turned the doorknob, pushing the door open, frown deepening when he found the curtains closed and a big lump under your covers.
steve walked towards your bed, sitting on the edge and put a hand over your sheet-covered body. "y/n's not here," your voice sounded muffled from under the covers. "leave a message after the sound."
steve chuckled. "how did you know it was me?" he asked. "it could have been a murderer, for all you know."
"saw your car from the window," you explained. "and i really doubt that freddy krueger has a 1981 BMW."
"hey, don't judge a book by its cover. the dude's a serial killer during the night, but he could be a car lover during the day," he said. "you're right. sorry for supposing," you said, still hiding under the covers.
he rubber your back, staying silent for a couple of seconds before speaking up. "were you sleeping? did i wake you?"
he saw your head moving repeatedly under the fabric, and he could only assume it was a shake of your head. "nuh-uh. woke up a while ago, though," you informed him, and he smiled rather sympathetically at the lack of energy in your voice.
he nodded in understanding, although you couldn't see him. "in a scale from one to ten, how weird was your dream?"
these were usually the kinds of conversations you had. you had the craziest dreams, and would always tell him what they were about. from you being a superhero fighting a gigantic blowfish that was attacking the earth, to buying weapons from your favourite rock star during a zombie apocalypse.
after learning this from you, he'd always ask you, on a scale from one to ten, just how weird your dream had been after a long nap you had taken. this time, though, his little, hopeful smile faltered when you stayed silent.
"sweetheart?" he asked, grabbing the edge of the covers. "can i see you?"
you didn't answer, and steve took the silence as a yes and uncovered you. you were curled up in a ball, laying in your pijamas and his sweatshirt covering your upper half. he looked quickly up to your face, noticing your exhausted look and the dark circles under your eyes. "angel," he cooed, laying down next to you.
you buried your face further into your pillow, bottom lip quivering and you had to bite it to stop shaking, your eyes squeezed shut.
steve took one of your hands, noticing how both of them were curled into fists, something he'd noticed you did whenever you felt anxiety. from the strength of your grip, after a while, your fingers would start aching, or you'd quite literally bury your fingernails into the palms of your hands. so, he took the hand that was resting agains the half of your body facing up, bringing it to his lips and placing soft kisses on your fingers and knuckles.
once he felt the tension leaving your hands a bit, he gently used his other hand to open your hand, massaging your fingers to help the ache in your muscles fade away. when he finished up with that hand, he pushed your shoulder carefully, signing you to lay on your back, so he'd have easier access to your other hand.
you obliged with a huff, opening your eyes to look at the ceiling. they were glazed over, steve noticed, filled with unshed tears that he determined to kiss away as soon as they fell.
he repeated his movements with your other hand, and he took both of your now relaxed limbs into his lap, pushing them together and rubbinf gently over the skin to replace the cold with a little warmth. "wanna talk about it?" he offered. you shook your head, turning to your side so you could hide your face in his lap.
steve accommodated, himself so you could lay more comfortably, and he run his fingers through your hair, sighing a little in concern. "don't feel like talkin' jus' yet," you told him, voice soft and vulnerable, and steve could feel his heart stuttering at the sound, at how small you sounded.
"that's okay," he said, combing his fingers through your hair, careful not to pull on any knots. he braided your hair, humming to a song he listened on the radio on his way to your house, and you even smiled a little at the sound.
steve hadn't noticed, though, busy working on your hair. you looked up from your spot on his lap, cheeks heating up at the mere sight of him.
even from down there, he looked so pretty— lips pursed and a gentle, almost non-existent crease in his brows in concentration as he continued to braid your hair with fine strands. they were a little messed up, some bumps and hairs out of place, but you appreciated the efforts nonetheless, heart swelling in affection.
you noticed he wasn't wearing the family video vest anymore. instead, he wore that yellow sweatshirt of his that you loved so much on him, and some blue, worn out jeans that sometimes hung too low on his hips and left little to the imagination as soon as he lifted his short from his body.
his hair looked tousled, and eyes almost as exhausted as you could only imagine looked yours, but you smiled at the sight anyway. he looked awfully pretty, and there was just something domestic about him taking care of you this way that left your head spinning, your mind dizzy and your heart fluttering.
he looked down, noticing your stare and your smile widened just slightly when you saw the tips of his ears turning a deep pink. steve smiled down at you, happy you found comfort in him and that he could lift your mood up at least a little bit, and he leaned down to give the tip of your nose a kiss that had you scrunching it up adorably, just the way that made steve want to grab you entirely and wrap himself around you under the covers and just stay there for the rest of eternity.
now you could feel a little more energy running up and down your body — it could've been the giddy feeling you had every time steve was around, too — but, either way, you sat up and quickly, without giving steve time to question your sudden motions, you sat on his lap, thighs wrapping firmly around his and, embracing him with a little more force than you had meant to, you accidently brought the two of you down to the mattress — not that steve was complaining at all.
he chuckled deeply, the vibrations of his voice resonating all the way to your chest, and you hugged him even tighter, face buried deep into the juncture of his neck. his arms wrapped all the way around your waist and back, big, calloused hands rubbing up and down your bag affectionaly. the warmth made you feel dizzy, and the way this man cared for you do deeply brought tears to your eyes, already emotional from your previous mood.
it seemed as if steve had noticed without even having to look properly into your face, the way you wrapped your arms tighter around his shoulders and how you nuzzled deeper into the skin of his neck had him bringing a hand to the back of your head, keeping you in place, where you hid and felt the safety you hadn't felt in the last couple of days.
he still hadn't gotten you to talk to him, but having you close and feeling safe with him wrapped around you was more than enough for now, and way more than he thought he was getting when he stepped into your home earlier that day. so, keeping this in mind, he hugged you closer, rolling the two of you to the side and bringing the duvet back on you, still caressing sweetly your hair.
he kissed your forehead a couple of times, lips moving against the skin as he spoke, the warmth of his breath spreading comfort to your body.
"as long as i'm here, nothing can hurt you."
