the thing is, i love The Narrative, but i also absolutely adore a truly character-focused tragedy where everyone’s downfall is caused not by larger narrative forces, but by hundreds of tiny decisions made by characters who, despite their best efforts, just suck.

#like. The Narrative is inherently a factor in every story because that’s how fiction works #there is ALWAYS a writer pulling the strings #but sometimes characters are written SO well that you legitimately forget #and you can just focus 100% on them and their choices #most characters can’t make choices but some characters are so good that they can #i can only think of a few examples of this - but it is real and i stand by that #there are stories that were created plot-first #where the author had a plot in mind and then made up characters to play it out (who are controlled by The Narrative they were forced into) #and then there are stories that were created character-first #where the author made up some fucked up characters and then let them loose to see what they would do #and THAT is some good stuff #and like. tbf i have ABSOLUTELY no idea if the story i’m thinking of was created that way - but it just feels like it #because the characters feel so much like real people #it’s fucked up. i love it

free my complex female character, she did the same thing as complex male characters but the fandom takes Any analysis of her actions/choices/motivations that doesn’t strip her of all of her agency in bad faith and claims that only misogynists would dare to critique the things that they’ve noticed in her character because she’s a woman, completely ignoring the over-presence of discourse about similarly traited male characters in their fandom.

The thing about riz gukgak canon aroace being real to me is that it’s such a Brian Murphy thing to do. He’s so good with casual queer rep in naddpod and never directly saying it, and it just being a part of the world. He never says “Elzor and Syb are Non-binary and use they/them/theirs pronouns” or “Jaina is a butch lesbian and I directly portrayed that with her being a dwarf with no beard” or “erlin is a young boy being pushed into a traditionally masculine role in a religion and the same time he breaks out of that is the same day he kissed a boy” he doesn’t directly say these things bc he simply doesn’t need to. All of this is so glaringly obvious and in the same vein so is aroace riz. Additionally, it’s entirely in character for riz “I’m allergic to self reflection” gukgak to not know those words and have that vocabulary and adventuring party wasn’t around yet so there wasn’t really and out of character space to talk about it. N E ways, the gist is that riz gukgak is aroace, not just to me bc he should be to you as well, and I think it’s important we all know that

Too many people want tsukasa to be viewed as socially cool. I think we need to accept that the only kind of cool wxs member is emu who befriends idols joined like 400 clubs and knows almost everyone. Emu has a million friends & most of the lines other characters have abt her are like “emu :)” meanwhile the lines abt tsukasa are all like “he is so weird.” & you want to pretend he’s cooler than her… be so serious…

Nene is also Lame & Rui is only cool to other nerds (gestures at pandemonium npcs). Crucially Tsukasa is an annoying theater kid. No annoying theater kid is popular or cool in highschool. It is central to his character and him being a weirdo who (canonically!) gets no bitches & yet somehow knows major celebrities is one of the funniest and most endearing things about him. Guy who in canon goes to school and people are like “it’s this weirdo again (sees he’s with rui) oh fuck oh no.”An (friends with everyone) & Akito (guy on sports teams) are the only cool characters at Kamiyama.

#i think the line where tsukasa got no valentines gifts (at least none that weren’t friend gifts) #but rui ‘widly known as a freak and basically just talks to tsukasa’ kamishiro apparently did needs more recognition #personal theory is rui is 1) genuinely very kind & acts very mature/responsible to ppl who aren’t tsukasa & sometimes akito/nene #2) 6 feet tall 3) aforementioned points made some people want to give him gifts #project sekai #if I feel charitable I will give tsukasa the excuse that every girl at his school assumes he is gay and/or dating rui so they don’t bother #also because it’s a very funny excuse. #mine #this sounds like I’m bullying tsukasa (I am) but I do love him. i just think making fun of him is the correct way to enjoy his character.

i think i’ve learned a lot when it comes to not applying my own values to the media i consume

for my script analysis class yesterday, we discussed two gentleman from verona, and nearly every classmate of mine was up in arms about how sexist the story is.

and i'm not saying it's not, or that it's not infuriating to read. but i'm also not putting my energy into getting upset about something written 500 or so years ago. and i'm not about to put my own beliefs onto these characters that are not me. i'm going to let their choices speak for themselves, and interpret it in the context of the story.

all that said, this now brings me to the point of alastor in episode 5, and how viscerally people are responding to it. those of you up in arms about the choices he’s making, and the violent threat he gave husk, you’re missing the entire point of his character, of this place they’re in, of the story being told. he’s an overlord, and he became an overlord by killing much bigger overlords and broadcasting their deaths over the radio.

HE IS NOT A GOOD PERSON.

if you started this show with the belief that every character working the hotel is a good person, you’re in the wrong place. watch the good place if you’re looking for a good wholesome story about getting dead sinners into heaven, because that’s not what this show is about.

you’re more than welcome to hate him after seeing the way he exerted power over a being whose soul he owns, but you’re doing the media you’re watching a disservice by writing it off so quickly. if you don’t like to be uncomfortable watching media, watch something else. this is an uncomfortable show, it handles uncomfortable topics, and it’s going to be an uncomfortable ride, and if you’re not up for something like that, then you should take a break from it and pick up something else. you don’t have to get online and defend your own ideals while you watch a show that goes against your ideals.

#they’re supposed to be some sort of experiment to see if people could recreate Sun Wukongs stone egg. the goal was to make a more controlled #and tame version using carved wood and cultivation. but eventually they got worried about it becoming too powerful and scrapped it #eventually they come to life and live in the abandoned temple they were built in #their bottom half is made of wood because when they came to life their creator/s left them unfinished when they scrapped the project #they had to carve the rest of their body out of hunger and frustration because they couldn’t eat or move much by crawling on their top half #this is also why they spite their creators and hate irresponsible creation. because of abandonment issues and feeling like they have no #purpose or direction in life #their power is also very limited to due being man made since they were originally a wood carving #meo gave me the idea but one reason would be because they’re half finished. the sculpture was still half stump so it was completely untouche #that half can channel power in its raw form but the other half cannot once it’s been carved by man #so technically they could have the same level or potential for power as the stone but that was dampened #the other thing is how they were created to be a duplicate or recreation of a stone monkey and a celestial looked at that and was like #‘we’re not doing that again’ LMAO #i think the case of them carving their own legs doesn’t take away their power though. that balance was made #before they came to life so carving the legs or not can’t affect it anymore. like making a cake and slicing it #their energy levels are also naturally low because of that so their movements are sluggish and they aren’t very active overall #constantly lying in the sun to charge their batteries and get some stuff done. just like me fr #I actually don��t know what I’m gonna do with this character besides Put Them In Situations with other ppls ocs.. so if you have #a lmk oc you have been warned /lh /j #I wanna make some backstory art for them though.. maybe even the animatic treatment if I can get through dear wormwood which is 25 #SECONDS OUT OF 3 MIN BTW #doodles #Lego Monkie kid #lmk #Monkie kid #lmk oc #monkie kid oc #myart #my art #xin ya
