let's get one thing straight because i’m getting tired of penelope stans shouting “but she's lady whistledown!” whenever they're confronted with the nasty favouritism by the production at the expense of kate.

lady whistledown is not the main character in the books OR the show.

bookwise she is only around for half the series. in the show she’s not even a competent narrative device (which is what her “importance” boils down to) once her identity is revealed.

back in season 1, whistledown was at least involved in the main story and played a role in daphne and simon’s romance. what was her contribution in s2? you give her a wholeass solo poster with the fucking leading couple as dots in the background and it turns out she never even wrote about them in her gossip rag. all she did in s2 was run after colin and ruin her best friend, but somehow that merits more publicity than the FMC?

this is not the lady whistledown show. it's bridgerton. if it was a show about penelope and her insipid family it wouldn't have made it past the pilot.

Bridgerton Rewatch S1E1 - Diamond of the First Water (Part 1)

In the lead-up to Bridgerton season 3, I decided to do a rewatch so here I go.

I think it’s interesting to pay attention to the different positions and ranks of the families in the show so I just assumed for a while that Lord Featherington was just sort of a generic lord. Did not occur to me for a second that he held the title of a barony. I know it’s the lowest level of British peerage but it still seems too high, especially with the Bridgertons being one rank above them.

I will always find it charming that there are hyacinths decorating the outside of the Bridgerton house.

Speaking of Hyacinth, she and Gregory are SO TINY in the first season. Mini little babies, they are so cute.

I have a theory about Eloise but I can’t confirm it until I finish the rewatch so for now I’ll just say that she is an impatient queen.

People mostly talk about Violet and Anthony’s relationship as it pertains to the second season but it’s clear from the jump that Violet has very little, if any, respect for Anthony. Like, I get it but damn.

The Featherington girls debuting together doesn’t make sense to me. Penelope’s the youngest at 17, which is a normal age for a debutante. But Prudence is 21 and Philippa is 19. Why was it so important for all of the girls to debut at the same time? It’s really bugging me.

So I paused when the focus cut back to the Bridgertons while the Featheringtons were being presented and I was not disappointed.

Anthony is trying his damnedest not to laugh, mostly cause he has pity for Pen

Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth are all just trying to figure out why Pen, who is the same age as Eloise, is debuting before El.

Eloise feels so much pain and pity for her friend, the face says it all.

And then there’s Colin. This might just be my Polin brainrot but I swear Colin is eyeing Pen up. Like, that man is fully admiring his “best friend.” He’s so in love and he doesn’t even know it, I’ll die.

I think the way this episode is edited is really interesting, especially the debut sequence. What really caught my attention is when we cut back to Hyacinth looking awestruck as Daphne is making her debut. It says so much about their characters and how Hyacinth looks up to Daphne. All that to say, editing is an extremely underappreciated craft, especially in costume dramas and romance.

Knowing that Pen is Lady Whistledown makes a lot of the stuff she says earlier in the show so much harsher. Like, it was completely unnecessary for her to take cheap shots at the Bridgertons for the alphabetical names. IDK, that just made me a bit uncomfortable.

Another LWD thing. I’m not the first one to point this out but I do feel the need to mention that WD is the one to come up with the term “diamond” to refer to the Queen’s favorite debutante. 

Now we get Simon. I love Simon but I noticed something different this watch. I think a part of the reason Simon hates society and doesn’t want to participate in it (other than the whole marriage thing) is that he never got the chance to be a part of it when he was young. Basically, he can’t find anything about society to like because he was never exposed to it.

No real note here. I’m just admiring Lady Danbury. I am a Lady Danbury stan first and a person second.

Throughout this season and for the majority of season 2, Anthony Bridgerton is probably the most inconsiderate character. This isn’t to say that he’s a bad person (he can be) but more to say that he rarely thinks before he speaks.

Moment of silence for VSQ. I have thoughts on the soundtrack to this show but that will have to be another post, I think.

The character designs are fantastic. This is another thing I have thoughts on but will go in another post. I just wanna take the space to compliment the costuming and HMU departments for being able to tell so much story through character design.

This next bullet just says “Anthony, leave her alone.” Which basically sums up the entirety of his and Daphne’s relationship.

I don’t know who holds the singular brain cell in the Bridgerton family but it’s not Anthony, Benedict, Colin, or Daphne.

Watching Colin sneak up to Marina to dance with her during the Danbury ball is always uncomfortable and I couldn’t tell you why.

Tangentially related fun fact, Lord Berbrooke is played by the same actor who played Sarah’s “love interest” in Derry Girls.

So this is a weird one but Colin can partially be blamed for Daphne falling out of favor with the ton. I know this sounds insane, just trust me. The Bridgertons are a very influential family. Their opinion matters a lot, especially at the beginning of the first season. So, where one Bridgerton goes, the men of the Ton will follow. Colin’s infatuation with Marina shifted the spotlight onto her and away from Daphne. This is also compounded by Anthony being an asshole, which I will get to later. But I don’t think Colin’s pursuit of Marina exists in a vacuum, especially at first.

I wrote down “rewatching makes me think less of Pen” but I have no idea what that was in reference to so I’m just gonna shove it on here.

Design wise i based daphne more on her dad because her blonde hair kinda bugged me ngl.

I kept her seafoam green because i think it suits her really well she will have a nymph form too but i have yet to design it!

Further design elements are based on domino cultural elements for her being the crown princess she would wear that often!

Story wise

I’m making daphne more important in bloom’s backstory and struggles in the show.

As the original holder of the dragon flame and also her sister daphne will become a mentor figure to bloom.

But before and after regaining her body i want daphne to be the kind of person to keep secrets a girl who doesn’t always tell the full story.

Most of her backstory would be told through the lens of other people’s interpretation as i would like her to be slightly mysterious.

And her connection to the dragon flame and the people after it might be more personal than she let’s on especially with valtor >:))

I think Penelope as a character would be so much more tolerable if her fans accepted that she *IS* a gray character. NC admitted as much in an interview, and I feel like she wouldn’t say that unless the writers and showrunners told her that, yes, Penelope is meant to be flawed. Yet her fans consistently treat her as this baby who must be protected. She writes sensitive shit she overhears from people and sells it for monetary gain and the rest of the ton’s shits and giggles, and doesn’t care if the subjects are her own family members or best friend. I feel like I’m living in an upside down world when people know she’s done all of these things but still say she’s the victim.

And the thing is, it’s not just a handful of her fans that don’t let you say anything negative about her. It’s the vast majority of them. I never see them acknowledge her wrongdoings. There’s always someone else to blame.

Nicola herself says Penelope is like her mother, Portia. So I'm not really sure why Pen stans are acting like she's some innocent flower when their own fave says she's just as conniving, etc as Portia is.

They just want to view her as some victim when she has a good life.

Her family isn't 'mean or cruel' to her. Portia despite being a terrible person for scamming the ton, she did do all of that for the sake of her daughters, admits that she loves them, etc.

Portia isn't mean/cruel to just Penelope.... She sits there and tells Phillipa that cotton will do for her 'common' self for her wedding dress after she asks for nicer fabric for it & constantly insinuates that Prudence is stupid. No one has ever made fun of Pen's weight in her family, etc.

Penelope is equally mean to her sisters as they are to her. That's just how siblings are, they mock each other, etc.

The Ton isn't mean/cruel to just Penelope. It's that whole family. No one fucking likes them as a whole. Cressida is mean to everyone so Penelope isn't fucking 'special' or anything like that. She had a whole ass rivalry with Daphne in S1 so it's not like she's JUST mean to Penelope. She's not nice to any women in the Ton.

Penelope's life isn't hard AT ALL. Her family was broke, but her mom also scammed the whole ton and got money back for them all the while, Penelope was hoarding her LW money under the floorboards of her bedroom like a dragon. Even if her family was broke, Penelope isn't.

Her being 'a spinster' in S3 isn't that hard for her let's be real here. Prudence, who yeah eventually gets married this season, but she's still unmarried, so is Cressida. She's not some poor soul who's the only unmarried girl in their 3rd season in society. If she wanted to be less lonely, she should have spent more time attempting to be likable to other people and the men of the Ton. Instead of just sitting in the corner listening to gossip she can use in her LW sheets and being sad that her crush didn't like her back b/c that's not Colin's problem.

my Scooby Doo opinions:

• i don’t like Guess Who. i’ve only ever seen 1 episode in full (the first one) and i thought that was decent. but i don’t like the rest of it after seeing some other clips from the show so far.

• i think the Loch Ness Monster movie is underrated. maybe not AS underrated as other movies but i don’t think it gets talked about enough in the fandom. also it’s one of the best DTV movies

• my opinion on Scrappy is that i am indifferent to him but i think his design is cute. that being said, i love and support all of my mutuals who love him and i will ALWAYS back them up 100000% no questions asked.

• the artstyle for Be Cool definitely fits the tone of the series well and it makes sense that it was used for that series. also i think Velma’s voice fits that series and that version of Velma well too

• Wendy Airs should come back one day and i think her relationship with Daphne in high school should be explored a bit more. i think we should see some flashbacks of them together when they were in high school and how they play a part in the present maybe

• Dapper Jack Rogers is one of the best characters in this franchise and is one of the best members of Shaggy’s family

• the Where Are You Now special was bad and i didn’t care for it

• i hated straight outta nowhere i thought it was bad. i couldn’t even get through the whole thing i had to skip scenes. and it’s NOT because of courage or anything related to him (i have respect for the Courage characters) it’s just a me thing.

• ALL of the gang members are the heart of the group because each and every one of them have so much love for each other as individuals and as a group, the group wouldn’t be what it is without any of them, and they all bring something equally important to the group.

• i’m so tired of crossovers ESPECIALLY Batman crossovers. i don’t have anything against Batman personally it’s just i think we need to stop with the crossovers for a while.

• we don’t need a 3rd James Gunn live action movie

• we don’t need a 3rd season of SDMI. the series is over and has been over for the past 10 years. there’s nothing left for the story, why would it get a 3rd season after all this time?

Edit because of some replies I got: I deleted a paragraph about Eloise's reaction to the Marina and Colin thing because I had misremembered and was wrong. Also added an anti-eloise tag because even though I'm not anti-Eloise, the post isn't pro-eloise

I have thoughts about Eloise Bridgerton and I'm dumping them in this post. Before I start dumping I do want to say that in no way am I some Penelope stan who thinks she is perfect in every way and my issues with Eloise are critiques of her character that I’m sure will be fixed once there is more focus on her storyline.

I have 2 problems with Eloise: 1) the fact that she seems to be unable to accept or understand her privilege; and 2) that she can't seem to understand other people's pov's.

Eloise can't seem to comprehend or understand her own privilege. Now I know that we haven't reached her season yet meaning her character development has yet to come but it's so infuriating and irritating to watch Eloise because she is so privileged but can't seem to acknowledge or be grateful for it. I also fully acknowledge that because it's the Regency era, we can't expect intersectional feminism but I'm still annoyed lol. We see her go to these rallies and get Theo entangled in her shit without seeming to be able to understand that whilst what she is doing won't really affect her (just fulfil her curiosity), Theo (who needs a job because he isn't rich) may lose his job. She can't seem to understand that whilst she can get away with not being married, someone like Penelope can't. The Bridgerton's are super rich and that means Eloise could live an unmarried life if she wants to but for Kate or Penelope, financial security in London means marriage. She may think she is above all of the marriage market stuff but for many of the other women in it, it is their way of ensuring they (and their parents and future children) live a safe, comfortable life without the fear of being homeless or without money. I also have a very strong feeling that if these political rallies and events led to the financial and social downfall of her family, she would not be as "radical" as she is. Whilst (like I said), intersectional feminism can't be expected from the Regency period, I feel like these are privileges that can be acknowledged.

She also seems so stuck in her own worldview. I remember all the stuff she said to Daphne in season 1, acting as if Daphne shouldn't be wanting to get married, without understanding why Daphne would want or need to marry and marry well. When she is (rightfully) mad at Penelope for writing about her and Theo in LW, she also doesn't seem to realise that the scandal hadn't really affected her family much at all and also that it's not like someone else hadn't seen her see Theo. Even if Penelope never wrote about it in LW, it still would have gotten out, like the Queen knew for fucks sake. She always gives me the vibe of "if you don't understand or agree with my worldview, then you are what is wrong with society" without bothering to try and understand other people's views, just shoving them off as "wrong". She also doesn't seem to understand that Bridgerton's status is almost unbreakable, relatively little effort is needed for them to maintain their status in society and scandal doesn't affect them at all or if it does, it doesn't affect them for long. the way there’s so much to say about how the bridgerton fandom acts towards shonda and even now, jess, the new showrunner, yet CVD (the previous MALE showrunner) got no flack for those first two seasons, season 1 w/ that specific scene between simone and daphne or for season 2, the lack of screentime for kate/anthony or the lack of background for kate or the lack of family/sisterhood…why is it that the two women get the most flack. mind you, they’re on jess’s ass and they have yet to see her season… questioning her decisions because she’s being too vague for them as any showrunner would be and deciding she doesn’t know what she’s doing or it’ll be terrible, ooc writing for everyone when they haven’t seen the season yet…

Yeah these women get way more flack than that man.

I’m personally on the fence about Jess and I admit I don’t like how vague she’s being. However, I believe everyone should be given the chance to prove themselves, so I’m reserving my judgment until I find out if Benedict’s season is next and who is playing Sophie.

I can also kind of see why she’s being vague about the whole thing.

This isn’t Marvel or even GOT, but Benophie is an extremely popular couple. This should’ve been their season and yet they were skipped over in favor of Polin(I’m pretty sure they moved them up because they wanted to throw a white ship in there).

So with that in mind Sophie news might overshadow things and while I’m the furthest thing from a Polin stan it is their season 🤷🏽‍♀️

Furthermore I don’t want that ships stans next year yapping about how they were “wronged” and trying to turn Benophies season into Polin 2.0 so I’m good with the radio silence(for now).

We shall all have our day in the sun(and I can only hope it’s as beautiful as QC cause that’s the gold standard for me).

Now as for Shonda, is she perfect? No, believe me, I have had my gripes with this woman. I have had a love hate relationship with her since 2013(Scandal was a roller coaster).

She is for all intents and purposes kooky. She likes to put her characters through a lot. She can be petty, and clearly has her favorites(Penelope), but some of the accusations thrown her way make 0 sense.

I’m not trying to dismiss anybody and I’m not trying to be insensitive because we all have our faves and we all want them to shine.

My faves(Benophie) were literally skipped over and we still don’t have an exact confirmation they are next, we still don’t know who Sophie is. My second faves might be getting screwed over too(I’m not getting into it, but Francesca deserves her man) so I get it. However, some of you are all the way wrong.

Shonda has made some interesting choices, but people need to give her more credit because the reality is that Bridgerton as it exists in the show wouldn’t have happened without her.

The Bridgerton books are not diverse at all(and Julia Quinn has said some really fucked up shit to the point where Shonda should’ve adapted a Black authors work and never given that woman a larger platform, but I digress)

Simon isn’t a Black man. Kate and her family definitely aren’t Indian. Sophie is a white blonde woman. Queen Charlotte isn’t even in the books and if she did exist in them she would be white (like in reality).

Lady Danbury is white. The Stirlings are white Scott’s. The Mondrichs don’t exist. New characters like Harry Dunkworth and Lord Samadani do not exist and if they did they wouldn’t be part Asian or Persian.

I can imagine that in the furture Lucy will be played by a non-white woman(if y’all want an Asian lead it’s her) and Gareth will at least be biracial(he’s Lady Danburys grandson). In the books both are white.

Hell, Penelope’s glow up consists of her getting skinner so even Nicola doesn’t fully embody her book counterpart.

Gay people are barely touched upon(no disrespect but this is why turning these ships into queer romances won’t work) and the books as a whole are mediocre at best.

It will never be perfect, but Shonda and co. have managed to turn something no different than all the rest of these crappy regency romance books into a highly entertaining diverse show. It’s because of her vision that Bridgerton is as colorful as it is and might I argue has provided a platform for things like Mr. Malcolm’s List and The Davenports to be greenlit.

I dont want to praise this show and the creators too much, and yes there are problems with Bridgerton (for me it’s the lack of monoracial Black leads getting their HEA which is why I hope Masali is indeed Sophie), but the hate at this time is a bit much.

I’m a s2 only watcher and I was shocked when I heard LW call Kate a beast, a dark-skinned foreign woman. I thought she was the villain only to be totally confused and disgusted that she’s actually endgame for a Bridgerton. And then she casually ruins some modiste’s business for her own gain. I was so done with her and I didn’t even know about Marina then. This is the character who’s the production’s favorite. Says it all really.

I love asks like this, I got one ages ago who went to read the books after watching S1 and thought El and Pen were going to be lovers and that Philip was just her beard/rebound marriage. It was funny af and I honestly wish JQ had the balls to do that. Thanks for sending this in! It’s really interesting to see the view of someone in the GA or rather a show watcher. 

I thought she was sweet in S1 then once Marina got outed and I realised who LW was, I was HORRIFIED and then she proceeds to get worse in S2 and I was like What the fuck? She was okay and inoffensive in her book but she’s an awful person in the show, I honestly have no idea how they’re going to make her sympathetic because you know they’re going brush past all her crimes in S3 just like they did Daphne’s SA and they didn’t even acknowledge the shit she did to Marina - well El did for a moment but Penalty didn’t seem like she cared. 

But yeah production definitely showed their ass by making her the WORST and instead of making her a full on villain which would have made her more interesting, she is framed her as this girlboss who can do no wrong and everything she did was justified because apparently what Marina and Eloise did is worse. And of course the delusional stans are eating it up and will do mental gymnastics to defend her racist ass. Honestly as much as I disrespect them, I am in awe of the mental hoops they jump through to defend her shitty actions. They’ll say Pen isn’t a racist or misogynist then turn around and send anon hate with racial slurs and slut shaming language.

As someone not a huge fan of Edwina, thank you for defending her lol. I am first and foremost a Kate defender/supporter. Do I agree with the way she went about some things? No. But she always put her family first in every scenario. You could see the love she had for Mary and Edwina and their well-being. Them and their love of her? I guess episode 8 showed it?

People need to realize that Edwina is only at fault for her cruelty against Kate and refusing to listen to her. Kate told her multiple times Anthony wouldn’t love her. He humiliated Kate at the races and Edwina didn’t care. She didn’t stick up for Kate or her father and mother after the Sheffields were cruel to them, etc. Anthony made enough “grand gestures” to imply that he had actual feelings for her - or at least what an 18 year old would believe to be love. Anthony. Is. At. Fault. when it comes to Edwina and her confusion.

Also people need to leave CC alone. Like you said, she has a right to ask for more as an actress, they didn’t have to do it. I won’t assume how she felt the direction the plot went, but I did side eye her a smidge during some Twitter debacles but I also kinda chalked it up to her being nervous about her first big role. I’m very glad she is no longer on there because I do not think that would’ve been good for her at all after the season dropped.

exactly, you perfectly summarised my feelings on edwina.

i found her behaviour towards kate to be horrible and that's something that merits criticism and was never addressed in the show. while kate may have made mistakes, her every decision was made with edwina in mind and i never felt like edwina acknowledged or appreciated that, or that she realised or cared about how much she hurt kate.

but yeah, for all anthony stans claim that he was upfront with her from the beginning bla bla bla, i found it perfectly reasonable that a teenager would romanticise his actions? even with kate as the voice of reason (thank god for older sisters) is an 18yo really expected to be on the receiving end of anthony’s speech in episode 2 and not romanticise it? teenagers fantasise for way less. of course what she took away from it was that Unlike Other Gentlemen who woo debutantes with pretty empty words, anthony was an honest and honourable man that may not wax poetry but would be there for her and she could always rely on. i’m not expecting someone that young and inexperienced to have the maturity of a grown woman and see the red flags when she's barely interacted with men in her life!

and yeah i’ve found cc annoying during the s2 promo (kinda felt like she'd built up a romantic version of edwina and anthony's relationship in her head that just wasn't there instead of acknowledging that anthony was an asshole to her character) plus the whole twitter debacle. i won't pretend she hasn't since received hate from the fandom cause she definitely has, but at the time of the whole poster mess kathony stans had absolutely no issue with her and were pretty excited to see her as edwina, which is why all the anger and blame was directed at the production.

but that's neither here nor there when it comes to her wanting more for her character, she was entitled to ask! it was up to the writers to say “yeah this is probably not a good idea but how about we go that direction?”. edwina could've had the same amount of screen time and cc the same amount of promo except it wouldn't be as a plot device that exists to stand between the leads, but as her own character. think anthony in s1. he got plenty of screen time and he was involved in simon and daphne’s story, but his character didn't solely exist to pose an obstacle in their story. he had an arc of his own that existed outside the main romance of the season.
