Happy Birthday, Saeran and Saeyoung! The 2023 Analysis!

Okay. Time to get our screaming out of the way, people. OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. THEY ARE THE BABIEST OF BABIES. IF SOMEBODY IN THIS WORLD EVER TRIES TO MAKE THEM CRY, I WILL DESTROY THEM IN LESS THAN SEVEN SECONDS WITH MY BARE HANDS. I WILL KILL EVERY PERSON IN ROOM AND THAN GET RID OF MYSELF IF THEY CRY.

I’m okay. I just needed to scream a little where you guys could see it before I had a minute to break down all the details in this photo. So, as far as what I got right in this photo... the hard light coming through the window was a problem area for a lot of people. I wasn’t sure if they were going to be inside or outside, but these boys are inside. In fact, they’re inside their childhood home and that’s not what I expected given the fact that Cheritz mentioned they were going on an outing for the day.

Well, I know for sure they will be recounting one of their trips outside together on Twitter, but they’re inside this time around for the title screen. I didn’t think they’d be in that house given the fact tat that house is such an awful place. Yet, it’s very bittersweet in a way because that house is a nightmare. But, it’s the only place... where they got to be together before everything changed. It’s a bad memory and a good memory. They can’t get back what they lost—

But, they still have each other and that’s what matters. When Rika and V burned their house down at the end of Ray Route, it was the end of those days. There’d never a way to get a tangible representation of that life they lived. Sometimes, I wonder how Saeyoung feels about that since we don’t get to tell him about that fact. How does he feel about the house being burned down? We know how our boy Saeran feels about it because it’s told to us as plain as day.

But, is it bittersweet for Saeyoung, too?

It’s easy for me to say that Saeyoung might not have cared. After all, he spent years trying to formulate the way to get out of there with his younger brother. If he could get out of there with Saeran, then he would never look back because that place was a living hell.

He wouldn't want to look back at it because he would have what he wanted. He would have his brother and the clothes on his back. But, he didn't get to have that because he had to leave his brother behind due to his deal with the agency. So, what does the representation of his childhood home mean to him? It wasn't the house that mattered to him, it was his brother.

But, much like how Saeran mentions that that house was a representation of life with his brother and mother… does it bother Saeyoung, too? Saeran got a single chance to go back to that home in the end of Ray Route.

It was overwhelming and traumatizing for him to go back to that place, but in other ways, it was a good thing because it reminded him of all the good things he had with his brother in that place. Even though it's hard for him to go through that for the sake of trying to find evidence to save his brother, he goes through with it because it's a part of the process of his closure.

However, because it burned down, Saeyoung is never going to have that. He won’t get the chance to decide if he wanted to go back there or not to confront his demons.

It's not clear if he would even want to go back to that place, but he doesn't even get the opportunity to decide that for himself. It's similar to how he'll never be able to face his mother. He wants nothing to do with his father or his mother, nor would he follow the path that Saeran did to find closure… But if he wanted to tell them off or make them pay for everything they did to him, he should be allowed that opportunity.

He's just never going to get that opportunity. I think he should be allowed to hit Saejoong as much as he wants, just as much as Saeran was right to have a talk with his father.

The boys have had many things taken away from them over the years and it is hard to think about that. Even in the context of the Secret Ending, Saeyoung and Saeran don’t get to face all their demons. Seeing them in their childhood home can be bittersweet in many ways because it was good memories for them but also nightmares. It's hard to describe the feelings you can have about a house of horrors when it was also your only safe place at the same time.

It's difficult to explain that to people who haven't lived through that kind of abuse. Not everybody has the same feelings about the household where things went wrong for them. A lot of people would like the place to be burned to the ground and other people might like to go through the household to be able to sort out their feelings. Then there are people who don't care what happens to the place either way. I don't know, when I see these things, I think about the different kinds of closure that they get throughout the game and it gets to me.

But, yeah, it turns out they're in their childhood home in this picture and the only reason why that threw me off guard was because the background is so vibrant and white. I am so used to seeing their house as this dilapidated household. It isn't a place that feels like it should have any light because their mother doesn't want it to have that. The house never looks like a place that should be warm or inviting. But, to me, the fact that this photo is bright... kind of feels like we’re just seeing through the eyes of the boys.

This doesn't have to be a depressing memory because it's not one. The two of them have each other and this is a representation of that feeling they have when their mother isn't around and they get to just be little kids. They are having a normal experience that any child would have and there's something poetic about that. That's why this picture doesn't look dark or depressing.

They are getting a brief moment of what it feels like to just be a normal kid who is excited to realize that they've grown a little bit since their last birthday.

That is especially a good thing for two kids that are malnourished and not taken care of. It's a well-known fact that the two of them appear much younger than they actually are for quite a long time. That's why Saeyoung looks so happy here. Even though they're in the worst kind of situation, they are alive and they are growing. Despite the fact that nobody wants them to be alive, they are alive and they are together. That doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Saeyoung won’t let Saeran see it as a bad thing. He is fighting hard every step of the way to make sure that his little brother knows that they are going to get out of that house one day and they are going to live the life they deserve. They just have to keep fighting every year no matter what. They will get there and that's what this picture says to me.

It's been another year around the Sun and it's a good thing that they're alive. It has to be. I can even see those stickers as a representation as a countdown clock. Saeyoung would use stickers to mark their progress. He would try to lighten Saeran’s hopes and dreams by saying that once Saeran is tall enough to reach the rocket, they can get out of there. Sure, it might be the fallacy of the childhood fantasy to think that that could be the case, but they are children and they need a reason to keep going.

Saeyoung is a kid, just like his brother, but he’s been parentified and it shows all the time. Look at how Saeyoung always said that they shared a body, so if they had any good things happen to one of them, it also happened to the other. That was the only way Saeyoung could help Saeran feel like he was growing up with experiences he rightly deserved to have. You know what hurts more?

The fact that Saeyoung always tried to make a fuss about Saeran’s height... and the very first thing he says to him in Saeran’s After Ending—

It will show in ways he doesn't even realize for the rest of his life. I guess that's besides the point since I should be talking about the details of the picture, but you know that I can't help myself once I get started talking about the boys. You guys know I'm guilty about talking on and on and on in a tangent. Stickers! The stickers are really cute. I think he probably got them from Rika, but I don’t know for sure. You can’t gauge the twins by looks to figure out their ages, after all.

The little stars are what made me cry, actually.

115cm is 3'9"ft.

110cm is 3'7"ft.

This is the first time we’ve gotten heights for the twins as children so I’m just so floored. I did do some math on this, though. This picture has to take place before they knew Rika or V. How do I know that? It’s because Rika’s Behind Story gives us a character sprite for teenage Saeyoung and I can use her height to tell you a guesstimate of his height at that time. Not a lot of people know about that since I know a lot of people don’t touch Rika content.

I’ll give y’all that while I’m at it.

So!

Rika is 5′2″. If I use her height to gauge Saeyoung’s height at the time, he is right about 4′11″ or 5′0″. So, this photo has to be well before that takes place all things considered. Saeyoung would’ve needed to hit a major growth spurt to move from his height of 3′9″ to reach that height. Considering how malnourished the boys in this game are, well... it’s hard to know how fast they’re growing considering their bodies never match their ages when they’re kids.

Rika and V commented often how they didn’t look their ages. So,

This is what the difference is between this flashback and the present day. I did a lot of configuring to gauge how old the boys were when this image takes place. I can tell you that at the maximum, the boys are younger than 14 years old in that photo. Saeyoung joins the agency at roughly 14-15 years old depending on what you’re reading or playing in the game since the timeline is just like that. If I had a guess on their age here, I would say they’re somewhere between 9 and 11. That feels about as close as I can place them.

However, I did have a thought when I was working on this. It occurred to me that there is a photo of teenage Saeran out there with him standing next to Rika and V from the After Ending. Now, the two of them are leaning over so that makes it hard to approximate the heights but I’m going to take a shot in the dark for this one.

So, Saeran is always going to trail right under Saeyoung when it comes to how tall he is and I can use my approximation of Saeyoung to figure out how short he is in this particular photo!

Since Saeyoung’s head capped at about Rika’s forehead, that’s how I was able to gauge where his rough height would be. In this photo, Rika has her head just tilted a bit to the side. But, if she were to straighten her back, the top of Saeran’s head would fall somewhere around the area around her mouth and chin. Which, would make sense if Saeyoung’s initial guessed height put him above that. With that in mind, (discount V here, he’s too tall for his own good and he’s squatting to make his work), Saeran’s height here is probably around 4′10″.

Which, knowing that would allow me to make a comprehensive view of what the twins were like at major points in their life. This is just my guess, so take all of it with a grain of salt! You guys know me, I have to spend hours figuring out these details for fun.

It was difficult for me to tell it first but I do think what Saeyoung is writing is his brother's name. The characters more or less seem similar but since it's written in a childish script, I had to do a double take to make sure that was the case since I am no expert in Hangul and I don’t want to say it’s something when I didn’t take a second glance to make sure. 최세란 is Choi Saeran, after all. That detail is the part that makes me want to cry. I know Saeyoung is the one that has to teach his brother who to write.

I want to believe in my heart of hearts that the first word Saeyoung learned how to write was his brother’s name so he could teach him. I don’t think he would’ve asked to learn how to spell his name.

Another thing I should point out is that I didn't expect them to draw the twins in any clothes that weren't already shown to us at the start. The boys don't exactly have options when it comes to their wardrobe. The only clothes they get to wear are the ones that likely come from a donation bin and nothing more than that. Over the years, the boys haven't been drawn in much of anything outside of the basic outfits we've been shown from the start when their children. Meaning that Saeyoung is in a hoodie, and Saeran is in a button-down.

There is something ominous about the fact that Saeyoung picked up a jersey with the number seven on it. I know realistically it's just a fun detail that the artist decided to add to the picture but I'm not the kind of person that would want to go with that since it's not as fun for me from an angle of analysis.

It's almost like a representation of what's to come and I don't think any of us want to think about that. I do really love what they drew Saeran in, though. It’s a simple shirt with a pocket, but imagine the trinkets he could carry in those pockets!

Crying at the thought of him finding a special rock or flower to take back home after a trip with Saeyoung. Anyway, I think it's really all I have to say about this picture this time around. I could go on and on and on about different thoughts and theories I have about their childhood but that could go on forever if I’m being honest. I can just say that it's been 7 years since I met Saeran and Saeyoung for the first time.

I will forever be grateful I had the opportunity to get to know these characters because if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here with all of you today. I don't know where I would be or what I would be doing. They found me at the lowest moment of my life and I thank them every day for being with me.

I could say that a hundred times over and I definitely have in the past. But it doesn't stop being true every time I say it. I love these guys from the bottom of my heart and I know they care about me too. Just as much as I know they care about the rest of you, too. That's the good thing about these characters. They have not only helped many of us realize that we wanted to survive no matter what, but they've learned that they deserve to keep going no matter what, too.

That's why this particular picture hits so hard in the first place because it's a representation of the idea that even if we are stuck somewhere, we can get out no matter how dark things seem.

If Saeran and Saeyoung can do it, we all can.

To me, Rika's relationship with Saeran is one of the most tragic aspects of her story. Even bigger than her complicated feelings towards V, her Mint Eye ideology, or her inner longing to be loved and cared for. It's the ironic tragedy of it. In my opinion, it most blatantly depicts her descent into her violent and ruthless ways, and how it slowly went from something good to nothing but pain and misery.

She went from seeing her past self in that small and scared boy, wanting nothing more than to give him all the love and happiness she couldn't receive as a child, to barely even treating him as a human being. Sometimes I wonder, if Rika could get a glance into her own future, back when she has just taken small Saeran under her wing, back when she hadn't yet sullied her hands with his mother's blood... What if she could see the way she would eventually end up treating Unknown. As nothing but a disposable object to leave behind and abandon the second he does not meet her indifferent expectations of him. Not a sliver of warmth of affection towards him in her cold eyes. Or how she would end up forcing Ray to work and work, and work, until he can't even sit up straight, how she would forcefully keep him away from such basic needs as food and water. Or how she would thrive in Suit Saeran's self-destruction, simply because it benefits her goals, despite him hurting so very deeply and so suffocatingly on the inside.

What would her reaction be? Looking down at the redheaded boy she genuinely wants to love and protect, and knowing just what horrible things he would go through because of her?

I truly think that she loved Saeran genuinely at that time. How could she not? When those dull eyes of his were so reminiscent of the emptiness she has faced as a small, helpless child with nobody there to hold her, or to tell her that she is good, and she is loved. Her only desire was to make him smile. To give him something she was never given by the adults around her

But, how are you supposed to make someone happy, when you took away something as precious as a mother from them?

In my opinion, her accidental murder of the twins' mother was the beginning of the end of their relationship. Once that event has happened, there is no healthy framework for them to follow from then on. Not when she never confronts that action of hers. She doesn't get any closure, nor does she heal from the trauma of it. She keeps it all hidden, stashed away like a dirty secret to take to her grave. Only V knows about her crime. She can't confess to it to her therapist, and she certainly can't say anything about it to anyone else.

Her never confronting, never working through it eats away at her slowly, and it'll continue to do so.

And we know that this particular event has stuck with her throughout her life. She is haunted by it. In a way that forever alters her relationship with Saeran, and how she perceives herself in relation to him. She has always wanted to take on a more parental, motherly figure in his life, but it isn't until his mother's death, does she openly expresses her desire to be a full on mother to him.

Except, this time, it doesn't come from a genuine place of love and care for this boy. An innocent desire to make him smile. It's her guilt. It's her inner feelings of shame and disgust at what she has done, and her immediate desire to take that pain away from him. It's her inner guilt at the fact that those tears of his, as he breaks down from the realization that now even his mother has left him, are her fault. She took his mother away from him with her own two bloodied hands. And she's the reason he's suffering now.

As a result, she turns her trauma and guilt into action.

It is evident to us, that Saeran did not think of Rika as his mother or V as his father. Rika forced him to follow this role model, especially so after he was initiated into Mind Eye. And we know he kept a lot of things inside, even as he lived with them. Much like he kept a lot of things from Saeyoung to not upset him, like his pessimism towards the idea of surviving to adulthood. Saeran was always a child who showed compassion and empathy. I believe that his empathy is the reason why he didn't speak up about it. Subconsciously, he felt that Rika needed this, despite him not really understanding why. So, he went along with it. He was already receiving so much support from her and V, it's the smallest thing he could do for her.

The scene of Saeran's cleansing (or initiation, as they are technically two different ceremonies with different purposes, but I digress) is heartbreaking to witness. The scene is both grisly and violent, making it extremely difficult to watch. And, from Saeran's diary, we know that it happens after a while of horrible and definitely traumatic experiences for him. It's the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

But what always hurts me the most is Rika's attitude towards it. There is no malice, anger, or resentment in her voice. She is concerned, she is upset, and then, she is happy. She's not upset because Saeran is suffering from the violent actions she herself has inflicted upon him, no. Instead, she recontextualizes that pain he goes through as something that she is actively saving him from. She completely loses herself in the false assumption that Saeran is just like her.

She openly says so.

You are like me. We are the same. Therefore, I am saving you, in a way nobody saved me. I am saving you from the pain I know you are going through, because I hurt the same way.

And, in a way, I believe it is yet another, far more darker and horrifying expression of her guilt. She is desperate to cleanse him. She openly snaps at the believers to hurry up, because she needs to save him. It's not a want. It's a need. In a way, I think that's her way of atoning for the sin of taking his mother away from him. As, once he is fully cleansed, she takes that pain away from him. Even if she doesn't say it, her actions and behavior reveal everything you need to know.

It's okay now. Now I am your mother. You don't have to grieve anymore. You'll be safe with me, and you'll never feel that pain again.

Isn't it ironic that, over time, she treats him almost as horribly as his mother had treated him? She starves Ray, punishes him for making the slightest of mistakes, threatens him into being terrified of the outside world.

All the traumatic experiences he had as a child.

Even down to locking him up in a dark and cold place.

Rika's relationship with Saeran reveals how she has become the same cruel monster she swore to fight against. It's not easy to think about. Buy, God, is it interesting to pick apart.

Saeyoung Winter Headcanons!

I wanted my first fic of the new year to be Saeyoung related >:D

-Since Saeyoung is pretty much warm in general, you get the best cuddles this time of the year! Just let him hold you close in his arms as he leaves kisses anywhere on your face. Best place to heat up from all the cold!

-The again, since it's cold, it doesn't mean that you are always gonna be stuck inside the house. You two still go out to stargaze and even have a snowball fight! The loser has to kiss the winner 707 times! His smug face is cute when he ends up winning.

-He doesn't lose on purpose sometimes, nope.. okay he does. But honestly? He's always very happy to shower your whole face with kisses and affection. I mean, come on! You have the cutest face ever! It's pretty much guaranteed that he'll embrace you tightly while he does it.

-After a long day, you two basically melt into each other as you cuddle on the couch. Saeyoung's warmth and scent is enough to get you relaxed as you lean onto him and it's the same for him as well. He loves how he gets to feel you so close to him and your scent helps to remind him that he isn't alone anymore.

-Sometimes, even Saeran or even Vanderwood can join you two while you watch movies or play games together. It really brings a smile to Saeyoung's face since he has his family around him. He couldn't feel happier. He truly feels alive as he sees you all together.

-Saeyoung also likes to try baking with you. Having cookies or anything else sweet would be really nice as you two stay in your warm house. Sure, he might be clumsy in the kitchen but he does try his best. Both Saeran and Vanderwood keep an eye on him in case he starts a fire, though.

-It's also the time where Saeyoung brings out his warmest and softests blankets for you two to sleep in. The combination of those things and Saeyoung's warmth will surely make you feel sleepy, warm and safe in his arms. He loves to rest his chin on your head as he embraces you close to him.

-He normally didn't really like Winter because it's cold and he used to feel really lonely. But now that he has you, Saeran and his whole family, he feels really happy. It's also a nice excuse for him to add a function to Meowy which makes itself warm up so you could always feel warm whenever you go. Saeyoung loves you so much and he is gonna show it with his kisses!

Man I wish it was easier to keep things from being lost in translation. Like when characters add -ah or -ie to each others names (which, really could've been kept in English. or, -ie could've anyway, to a degree. wouldn't be exactly the same but it still conveys a bond bc nickname) or using hyung/noona. listening to voice acted story modes, it's easy to hear when these things are dropped.

like when saeyoung talks about V and rika, it's pretty much always "V hyung" and "rika noona", but after the Big Reveals it's just V and rika. I just got the one story mode in Ray After Ending with Saeyoung and V and when saeyoung tries begging for saeran's freedom he also starts calling V "hyung" again.

I haven't checked for it, but I did once see someone point out that in Saeyoung's BSE3, when MC starts to get suspicious of saeran's "secret exit", he starts calling saeyoung "hyung", which very easily keeps him from thinking too much about it. there are a few times where rika will stop adding "ah" to saeran's name if she's mad at him (I heard it at least once in the first Secret Ending, when she says he needs to be brainwashed again.)

i dunno i just love these little language things and i love how sometimes concepts are specific to a language bc that's what makes them special and unique but man i wish it were easier to convey these things in translation.

✧ Ruby Chocolate ~ Showing physical affection

Saeyoung lies in bed, staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars he pasted up on the ceiling a lifetime ago. Beside him, his partner lies sleeping. She fell asleep an hour (maybe more) ago, and he has been listening to her slow, steady breaths for a while now.

He has always had trouble sleeping. His anxiety, left over from years of having to be alert at all hours of the day, keeps him up at night. Even the reassurance that the two people he loves most are safe isn’t always enough to calm him down. Sometimes, his thoughts just keep running. It leaves him restless and antsy, desperate to get up and do something about it.

He sighs and shifts over to lie on his side. If he tried, he could just about make out his girlfriend’s form in the dark. They’re close, but not touching, but even if they were, she’d still be worlds away. It’s a strange thing to think, but he misses her. Nights like this leave him feeling like the only person in the world.

Tonight, he can’t help but watch her, the steady rising and falling of her chest. She only moved in a month ago, so having her here next to him is still a novelty. So many things are still new to them.

Saeyoung spent the first two weeks of his relationship believing that he might never get to see the future he had been dreaming up. He was wired to believe that every day might be his last, and if this mission to save Saeran was the most important one of his life, then why wouldn’t it be the one to kill him? The life he was hoping for was one he didn’t deserve, after all (though he never said this part out loud).

It’s a strange way to live, when you’re unsure if you’ll still be alive in a week. Stranger still when you’re experiencing real love for the first time. All the hesitation and awkwardness that usually come with new love were pushed aside, because he was certain his days were numbered. Why would he wait to confess to her how deeply he cares for her? Why would they not kiss when they want to? It was now or never.

The physical boundaries between them quickly eroded after they left the apartment together. There was rarely a moment in the next week where they weren’t touching . He rested his hand on her thigh as he drove for hours on end, she would curl up next to him while he was working, they’d pull each other closer as they drifted off to sleep.

It surprised him how quickly he got used to this familiarity. He had spent so much time by himself, isolated from the world, that he had never imagined being able to keep someone so close to him. They felt like extensions of each other, not made to be separated now that they had finally found one another.

It wasn’t just physical closeness, either. They bared their souls to one other and shared their secrets and fears with one another. He was open about his feelings for her, and she seemed to understand him almost better than he understood himself.

She always seemed to be able to read him so easily. It was a surprisingly comfortable feeling, to be known by her.

When he woke up in the hospital after the events that happened at Mint Eye and found her sitting by his bedside, it felt like a divine gift. He had survived this mission and been given the chance to deliver on all the promises he made. He’d actually be allowed to get more than just a few days with the person he loved. If he was lucky, he’d get a lifetime.

If the first days had felt like a whirlwind, the following months were agonizingly slow. He remembers a lot of hospital waiting rooms, frustrating conversations with doctors that never seemed to go anywhere, and painful silences in the bunker as he waited for Saeran to say something, anything.

He knew that his plan to break Saeran out of the hospital would mean a prolonged separation from his girlfriend, but he didn’t realize just how painful the distance would be. He found himself back in his office on most days, reminiscing the days where all he could do was wait for a text from her (and here he was again, still waiting on her texts).

They both knew it was worth it. Saeran’s recovery was their top priority, the first step to building up their family. It didn’t make it any easier, though. For a while, all they could manage was talking over the phone. They’d remind each other that this was the road to a future that they both wanted. They just had to get through this part.

When he let himself fantasize about a time when they could be together again, he thought back to those early days. Hunger for closeness and the comfort that only physical touch could bring. His arm over her shoulders, her hands in his hair, the softness of her skin. He craved her.

Imagine his surprise when they finally reunited and he found himself tongue tied. He wanted to reach for her, to hug her tight and never let go, but he could barely reach out to hold her hand. The time they spent apart seemed to have manifested in a physical distance between the two of them that neither of them knew exactly how to breach. The familiarity they had built up in their days on the road was something they seemed to have lost.

When they tried to talk to each other, their sentences came out stilted. He could hear the things they were trying to say between the lines, the things they actually meant under all the pleasantries and vague comments, but it was caught in their throats. Their conversations consisted of more words unsaid than anything meaningful.

It was ridiculous to him. They were in love, had already promised each other the world, already gone through all the steps that other couples had gone through, only to land back at square one.

How had he once been able to be so emotionally vulnerable with her? Now he can barely find the words to tell her that her absence has felt like a missing limb. That he still wakes up from nightmares scared that she's hurt.

He started to worry that they were moving backwards instead of forwards. All this time apart wasn’t doing them any good. He decided that, as soon as he got Saeran’s blessing, he would ask her to move in with them. Sharing the same space again, going through the process of healing from the things they had been through together instead of apart would bridge that distance that had built up during their separation, or so he hoped.

The bunker had been empty for so long, that two extra inhabitants made it feel bustling (even when Saeran didn’t leave his room very often). He was still surprised by the sight of her just relaxing in the living room or working on something at her own desk. She was here with him, in this house that has so often felt like an isolation cell. With both her and Saeran living here with him, it had slowly turned into a home without him even realizing it.

Slowly, they started to find their way back to each other. One day, while sitting on the sofa with a book, she found him hovering at the doorway to the living room, unsure whether to enter and interrupt her or just let her enjoy her time. She smiled at him affectionately and beckoned him over to her. He joined her on the sofa (not close enough for them to touch, he thought with frustration), and smiled sheepishly.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt you,” he said, eyes going to the book sitting forgotten on her lap.

“So you decided that hanging out at the door like a creeper was the best option?” She asks teasingly.

He doesn’t have an answer for her. He can feel the heat rising in his cheeks, as it has been doing so often since they reunited. He could have sworn he wasn’t this easily embarrassed around her before (and she’d disagree with him). He laughs bashfully and his hand shoots to the back of his neck. “I… guess?”

She shakes her head in mock disapproval, “I thought you were more discreet than that, agent.”

“So what are you reading?” If he changes the subject, maybe she’ll stop teasing him and he’ll be able to think clearly again.

“It’s an old favourite. Want to hear about it?”

“Of course.”

“Then – “ she clumsily gestures to the empty space next to her. “Come here. You’re too far away.”

He laughs properly this time. There couldn’t’ be a more apt description of their current situation. At her invitation, he shuffles over so he’s resting against her. She runs her fingers through his hair, probably trying to smooth out the stubborn bits that never seem to want to lay flat. It’s a familiar gesture, one that immediately puts him at ease.

Before he can stop it, he says, “I missed you.”

She presses a quick kiss to his hairline. “Me too.”

It got easier from then on. They’d seek each other out in each other’s spaces, and soon they were automatically making room for each other. The conversation flowed more easily, and they started to reach for each other like it was second nature.

He’d find her in the kitchen, and wrap his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. He’d laugh when she shivered at the feeling of his breath against her ear and ask her for a taste of whatever she was making.

She’d join him in his office, first pulling up a spare chair (one that had once been Vanderwoods), then slipping onto his lap at his invitation.

Like blood returning to a limb gone to sleep, they fell back into sync with each other. It felt natural, right.

If he asked her to describe what it was like to live with him after a month, she’d say he was like a clingy cat, which is a metaphor she thinks he’d appreciate if she ever told it to him.

Eventually, he gives in and gets out of bed. He swears to himself he’ll just tinker for a few hours to settle his mind, maybe play a round of LOLOL with Yoosung if he’s still up, then go back to bed. She won’t even notice. He’ll be back in bed before morning, in time to be with her again by the time she wakes up.

In his office, he pulls out plans he had started working on for upgrades to his front gate. He has a lot more to protect in the bunker now than he ever had, and he has been overflowing with ideas on how to keep the place safe.

He isn’t even aware of how much time passes as he works, alternating between plans and little bits he already has started. In fact, he’s so focused on his work that at first, he doesn’t hear the door to his office opening.

What he does hear is the shuffling of bare feet as she enters the room, dressed in just an old t-shirt of his and a blanket pulled over her shoulders.

“Sunshine! What are you doing awake?”

“You were gone,” she replies. Her eyes are squinting against the light of his screens and her voice sounds groggy. He is hit with an ache in his chest. He woke her up after all.

“I’m sorry,” he says, “come here.”

He holds out his arms to her and she pads across the room to join him. She settles on his lap, straddling him so they sit face to face. His hands automatically go to her waist to hold her steady. She wraps the ends of her blanket over his shoulders so they can share warmth.

“Why are you up?” She asks.

“I couldn’t sleep. I thought I’d work until my mind shut off; you know?” He phrases it like a joke, but she knows there is truth under it. She knows it better than anyone. On nights where he does manage to quickly fall asleep, she tells him that he mutters incoherent sentences under his breath and can't lie still.

“Hmm,” she stifles a yawn, “what are you working on?”

“Security stuff, mostly,” he wants to explain it further, but with her so close, he finds his mind wandering from his work. He thinks instead about the warmth of her body so close to his, the way her fingers are absentmindedly tracing little shapes across his upper back over where she’s holding the blanket. How a few weeks ago it was difficult to hold each other’s hands and now they can be this close again. How he wants to be closer.

She must notice something shift in his expression (she always does) because instead of pushing for him to explain further as she usually would, she dips her head down to press a kiss to the base of his neck. He shivers, despite the warmth.

He can’t for the life of him imagine why he ever got out of bed. She continues to press soft kisses to his neck, and his hands move from her waist to her bare thighs.

Breath warm against his skin, she says, “maybe you can continue that tomorrow, what do you think? You can explain everything to me when I’m awake enough to understand it.”

He hums shortly, not trusting his voice with much else. All he knows is that he doesn’t want her to go back to bed without him. He moves to stand up from his chair, and her legs wrap around his torso.

Together, they return to bed.

Rika.

Love her or hate her, no Mystic Messenger player can deny that she is central to the overarching plot of the game.

Depending on your view of her, her major role in Ray (Saeran) After Ending is either intriguing, exciting, frustrating, or infuriating.

Personally, I loved the portrayal, insight, and development in Rika during the RAE. Read below the cut for my Rika thoughts. Spoilers abound for Ray's route, RAE, Rika Behind, and even the Secret Ending. Also, uh, it's a long post. Longcat long.

(If you're interested in opinions on the RAE from a Saeran-loving POV, I'd suggest you consult @marshmallowprotection who pours her heart and soul into her analyses, especially regarding Saeran.)

If you're reading now, I'm assuming you have enough background in the game's lore where I don't need to explain the basics, so I'm going to dive right in.

At the start of Another Story, our well-intentioned but common-sense-challenged MC ends up being personally escorted to Mint Eye. And MC chooses to fixate on Ray and his mysteries and allure, ultimately trusting the not-so-honest rose boy instead of the highly mysterious V, who apparently is not an AI but also should not be anywhere near this cult.

In MC's defense, sometimes it's easier to choose the evil you know versus the evil you don't.

Rika doesn't have a problem with this, initially. She knows that she needs to throw Ray a bone. Allowing him to have a little doll like MC to dress up and pose and control and adore will appease him, and he has a plan to make MC useful for her goals, anyway. It's a win in her book, to keep Ray indebted to his Savior and also the possibility of luring the RFA members to her faster.

But a major distinction exists between Rika in Another Story (AS) and Rika in the original timeline (OS). Much like Saeran's mental state deteriorated further over the extra year and 6 months (give or take) between AS and OS, giving us Unknown, so did Rika's. In the SE, she explicitly tells Unknown that he was a failure and she wanted Saeyoung instead. She no longer valued Saeran's prior contributions to Mint Eye or her mental state--she wanted results now, and she would sacrifice anyone and anything to achieve them.

(Well, almost anyone. Turns out sacrificing V was not what she wanted, after all.)

But her goals are different in Another Story. She's still pursuing her dreams of making people happy by "saving" them from a tainted world of pain, but she's still itching for the personal happiness she has wanted all her life: love.

She wants a loving family. She has never known what it feels like to have a family that loves her, as her earliest memories are in the orphanage, and she was adopted by a vile, hateful woman who cursed her and subjected her to physical and emotional pain, verbal abuse, neglect, humiliation, warped "religious" cult ideas of sin and salvation, and the list goes on.

When she learned of two twin children who needed loving, protective parental figures... she became obsessed. She could save them. Nobody ever saved her, but she could save them.

That delusion of forming a happy family with V and the twins only became worse after Mother Choi's death. (I hesitate to call it a murder, because it was an act of imperfect self-defense, and thus I'd argue it was voluntary manslaughter under USA law. But if we're being technical, under Korean law it's murder under extenuating circumstances. Legal jargon differs across countries.) Having taken Saeran's mother away from him, Rika got the idea that she needed to be his mother now. They would both have a good family now--that's a win-win, right?

This is the Rika we still see in Another Story. That's why she gives him the name Ray, to eliminate his past and all traces of V and Saeyoung, molding him into her obedient, doting son. That's why she dresses him up in layers upon layers and forces him to study hacking, so she can control every aspect of her sweet child. That's why she swipes Ray after she catches wind of his kiss with MC in the garden. She doesn't know or care who instigated the kiss; all she needs to know is that MC poses a risk to her fantasy, her game of house.

So she tortures Ray until he can become her puppet-son again. Except she ends up with Suit Saeran, and for the time being she'll allow that because at least he isn't tripping head over heels for MC.

That backfires too, and when Saeran frees himself of that stuffy suit and allows his body to breathe, once Saeran makes his own decision to abandon those shackles, follow his heart, apologize and atone for his wrongdoing, and break out of his gilded cage with MC... Rika loses it.

She's lost everything. Mint Eye be damned, she's lost her illusion that she will reach a "happily ever after."

So when V blames himself and crawls back to her, not wanting to see her crumble alone, she locks a collar and leash onto him. Honestly, it's the worst possible ending for V. He can't shake his self-hatred and guilt complex, and he feels the need to stand by Rika even as she sends them both on a path of destruction, because he refuses to abandon her like his father abandoned his mother. He didn't even love her anymore, but he wanted to give her the peace that he never could when they were together. This was how he felt he needed to pay for hurting her, even if it meant destroying himself.

Okay, screenshot is a good place to wrap up the backstory and dive into the RAE itself.

I've seen complaints that Rika's character was inconsistent in the RAE, but candidly I think the fluctuations in her goals, emotions, and actions represent her fragile mental state in a phenomenal way. She was highly sensitive and susceptible to emotional influence, whether positive or negative. The seemingly smallest, most trivial events could send her reeling. She clearly has a lot of mental health issues and trauma that have never properly been addressed. Instead she turned to the worst possible coping mechanisms: comphet, making a cult, and brainwashing folks into being your make-believe family.

She didn't team up with Saejoong because she likes the guy. She sees him as a means to an end: getting the twins to live with her in her game of house.

The "he" that Rika refers to in this chat is Saejoong. He's a horrendous parent, but he managed to capture Saeyoung, and therefore Rika sees him as a tool. She also is adamant that the younger twin is "Ray", not Saeran, because the boy she needs for her happy ending is the submissive one with pruned wings, not the independent one who flies away on his wings of love.

If MC tries to inquire into Rika's motivations, she simply says she chooses happiness and to focus on the small joys in life. She's no longer as guarded and high-strung, because she has much less to lose. She doesn't feel the need to be perfect, to be a Savior. She's at peace with herself, instead of constantly seeking approval. Part of that cab be attributed to V's (reluctant) acceptance of Rika for who she is, instead of trying to fix her.

She's trying to be more open and honest, and with that attempt we get a Rika who is less guarded and poised, and rather a Rika whose mask is off and is trying to navigate what it means to simply "exist." She just wants her family of 4 to live "happily" together, and a lot less scheming is required. She almost has the energy of "I'm going to be the fun, cool mom. :)"

I bet she's awful at stacking chairs, though.

Now, many characters AND players have wondered, "Why in the WORLD would Saejoong team up with Rika?" He thinks she's nuts. We know that Rika is using him, and I'd venture that he's doing the same. He knows he's caught between a rock and a hard place, but he also knows that this woman is desperate to take his troublesome bastard sons and disappear with them. She can't exist in public, after all, or she'd risk her secret of being a cult leader getting exposed. It's a weird solution, but he was in no place to refuse her offer. Coerce Saeyoung into making false broadcasts to bolster Saejoong's public image, and then let Rika, V, and the twins run off into the sunset.

A special insight that you only get during the Normal Ending is that Saejoong thought he and Rika were similar, which is likely another reason he was willing to collude with her. And the Normal Ending is the reason that I felt inspired to write this post at all.

On day 3, Rika accuses Saeran of hating her. She's furious that she doesn't have Ray anymore, because Ray needed her and gave her a purpose. Saeran doesn't need her, and that sends her into a panic. But he chooses to be compassionate and to try to sympathize with her.

On day 4, we get this exchange between MC and Rika:

Rika breaks down in MC's arms. She didn't know what love was, and she didn't know how to reach it herself. Her solution was to control, to manipulate, to clutch desperately onto people who showed her even a shred of warmth... but always staying just distant enough where she could withdraw or flee if she felt threatened, or worse, sabotage the connection herself.

She didn't know what love was because she'd never experienced it. Her mother was a malicious, cruel woman. Mika sacrificed and manipulated her. Her priest assaulted her. V did his best, but he kept pushing his ideals and methods onto her instead of listening to her. She kept Saeran through control. She brainwashed and gaslit believers, smooth-talking her way into their minds and pockets. She even kept V bound to her by blinding him; we can only assume he got treatment after his trial.

MC and Saeran showed her what love is. It's about kindness for the sake of kindness, not to curry favor. It's a willingness to step out of your comfort zone to help those you care about. It's being brave when you're terrified. It's communicating in more ways than one, always listening and considering the other's thoughts, feelings, actions, and reactions.

For the first time in her life, she saw love. She saw love in Saeran, who'd lured her and V away so that his lover and brother could be free. She saw love in MC, who'd always been gentle but firm with Rika, expressing genuine intrigue and concern for her. She saw people who didn't immediately demonize her for her worst mistake: the death of Mother Choi.

She's being honest with herself, too, acknowledging and understanding that her actions were wrong. And she starts bawling, because she's been repressing herself, her fears, and her needs for so long. She laments that she yearned for love like a child, but her body was too big now... and that made the void feel larger and emptier.

She finally got the answers she'd been trying to find for her entire life: What is love? And is she worthy?

So when the opportunity comes for her to set Saejoong straight, she tears into him. Now, she only does this in the normal ending. In the good ending, Saeran is the one who talks to Saejoong, says his piece, and gets his peace. Clearly that's the best possible ending for Saeran, because it allows him to put his last demon to rest. Now he can focus on healing and finding happiness on his own accord.

But in the normal ending, Rika shows that she's not just a sob story for MC and Saeran to pity. She's taking their lessons and her new convictions to heart and putting them into action.

And Saejoong truly loses his cool when he hears that the investigation team is coming. He knows he's toast, and so he tries to appeal to Rika one last time: "You know that you'll be going down, too."

To which Rika says: "Yes. It's long overdue."

Rika has a long, difficult road ahead of her, but it'll be a surprisingly peaceful one. She wants to heal. She wants to live a better life. She wants to be honest and true, and that means atoning for her crimes.

But then, she's going to devote her life to love.

The RAE Normal Ending is, in a bizarre way, the best outcome for Rika that Mysme canon gives us. (Because seriously, shipping her off to Alaska to GTFO was the laziest and most unsatisfying ending for her that I can imagine.)

SAEYOUNG CHOI: would lovingly make fun of you for it, and when your cabinets started getting cluttered, he'd hold a little intervention for you, you tried to convince him that you did need all of these mugs, he wasn't buying it, in an attempt you'd challenge him that you wouldn't buy any mugs if he wouldn't buy any more cars, the thing about saeyoung is that he lives for challenges like these, you two had a bet on who would break first, you both tried to tempt each other by showing off rare cars/mugs to the other, the bet went on for a good while, none of you wanted to lose, saeyoung was eliminated but not in the way that you expected, instead of buying a car... he bought you a mug, he bought you a silly long cat mug after having a series of rough days to cheer you up

V / KIM JIHYUN: he'd have a hard time saying no to you buying a mug, seeing you so happy and bright just because of a silly mug was so warming to him, he just loved seeing you happy because it made him happy, however your mug collection was growing out of control, while cooking one night with him you asked him to hand you a measuring cup, he opened multiple cabinets to just mugs, he'd eventually found it but asked you if you'd consider donating your old ones, you were hesitant, you loved your big collection but it was getting out of hand, you ended up agreeing and went the next day to multiple thrift stores and charities to donate, you did ended up taking just a few home that were there, but doing something nice for the community with v was a big highlight

VANDERWOOD: didn't understand why you needed a mug with a silly image inked onto it, he couldn't wrap his head over why you can't just use a plain mug, you tired to explain that it enhances the overall experience of having a warm drink, wasn't convinced, tried to convince you to cutdown but you just kept saying you didn't have an absurd amount (you did), he'd eventually give in and ignore it, but seeing you so happy over something so insignificant made him happy, not that he'd mention or say so (tsundere moment cough), later on you'd begin to find random mugs in your cabinet, you were certain you'd never bought them though they were very cute, you'd ask vanderwood the next time he was around about them, he'd deny ever bring them there and just say you must of forgot buying them, you knew that wasn't the case, the only possibility was he would sneak them in, and that he would, he'd take note of you top favorites and bring you one similar

YOOSUNG KIM: yet another enabler, like everyone else he loved seeing you happy, it didn't help that his main love language was gift giving, on top of all the mugs you'd buy yourself, he'd get you four more, he'd also be a big fan of cute matching mugs, after telling him that your cabinets started becoming full of just mugs, he offered to keep some at his place for when you come visit, but soon his cabinets begin to be mostly just mugs, you had to come to your senses or else the both of you would be buried in so many mugs, you combed through your collection together, getting rid of ones you were okay to part with, yoosung was a little sad to part ways with your mugs, even if you kept all the ones he gifted, he was so used to gifting you mugs it was almost an routine, he had to find the next little thing he'd gift you

ZEN / HYUN RYU: he thought your obsession with mugs was very cute, he'd even gift you a couple when he could, if he was working he'd ask production if they had any mugs with the logo of the project he was working on, even if you were cute about it he knew he had to tell you to hold off just a little bit, your collection was starting to eat the kitchen cabinets, you had him help you talk yourself out of buying mugs whenever you two went out, that was easier said than done, he'd see your eyes light up with pure happiness and bliss whenever you saw a mug you liked, he'd try to remind you that you were holding off but whenever you looked at him it broke him, he'd see your loving puppy dog eyes (even if they weren't intentional) and debate on just this one, that mostly turned into one mug each time you both went out, in zen's books at least it was better than nothing

Bi Yoosung is canon /j no but what else could I hc him as, with his big ass crush on Saeran 😭 and I believe it wasn't the only one - tho I think most of the times he'd be oblivious and confuse his boy crushes with simple admiration, because he likes girls after all! But boy. Sweetie. My dude. You're fruity and it shows.

With Byeol being nonbinary, Yoosung's a bit confused at first. He doesn't live under a rock, he heard about nonbinary genders, just hasn't really done any research about the topic. He has no problem with accepting them in any way regardless if he fully gets it or not. He just needs some explanations and learning to do so he could understand their identity better.

💚 Eunbyeol Kim (Byeol) ♡ she/they/he ♡ 20 yo ♡ nonbinary, pansexual

Byeol likes both feminine and masculine clothes and interests, but has always been praised only for presenting feminine ("You're such a pretty lady!", "you look like a little princess in this dress" "you look much prettier with some makeup on") and it felt wrong so she started to resent these and dress as androgynously as possible, rejecting everything that was considered feminine.

Dislikes how feminine their face and body is, always admired androgynous people, and wishes breasts were an accessory you can put on and off depending on the outfit. Related those feelings to just wishing to look good in both male and female cosplays, only much later realized there is a deeper reason for that.

Bought her first binder for cosplay purposes and oh boy the happiness it brought!!

Generally wearing masculine outfits always brought that little, unexplainable spark of excitement.

Once when gaming someone referred to her as "he" and it felt cool so she never corrected them. Now goes by mostly he/they online and she/they irl (but honestly is fine with any).

As a teenager started to be more active online, and finding lgbt communities, she discovered the existence of nonbinary genders and started to put the pieces if her life together. Rotated between different identities (demigirl, demiboy, genderfluid, agender, etc.) but at the end decided to just stick to nonbinary as it felt the most comfortable.

Cut their hair at the end of high school, out of impulse and spite for her family pushing the idea that a woman must have long hair. It felt so freeing, even tho she ended up looking like a disaster lol

Their family is conservative and not very accepting to anything outside of the "norm" so they're not out to anyone except one of her older sisters who does everything to support them, even if she didn't fully understand at first.

While doesn't mind she/her pronouns, other gendered words (like miss, sister, girlfriend etc.) makes her uncomfortable so prefers to use gender-neutral alternatives when possible.

Definitely prefer to be referred using their shortened name - Byeol - since it's gender neutral, than the feminine full name - Eunbyeol.

Now - after learning that the way they're presenting nor interests do not invalidate their identity - embraces their feminine features (still thanks gods for the invention of a binder but doesn't always feel the need to wear), actually likes wearing makeup and dresses sometimes, loves to play with fashion and mix both feminine and masculine pieces of clothing, and is obsessed with accessories.

Regarding the romantic/sexual attraction, he has 0 experience, but never put much importance to it, "if I fall in love then I fall in love, the only thing that matters if we get along well".

Since they're going to the same college as Yoosung, they saw him in the halls, a few days into 1st semester, and immediately got a big ass crush on him. Felt way too shy to approach him though, and everytime they ran into each other, only managed to mumble something incomprehensible (and that was very new and out of character for her, and also very embarassing). Later, slowly they started bonding over the same interests, though Yoosung was very oblivious of Byeol's feelings towards him. Until many months later when she confessed to him - or in his route, when he realized that the party coordinator he fell in love with is actually his college and gaming friend. 💚

Saeyoung's ended up being one of the longest. I had as much difficulty classpecting him as I did with Zen.

Personality/General Info: Outwardly, outgoing, cheerful, and bizarre. He pranks Yoosung and makes fun of everyone (including himself). Jokester. Likes cars, cats, and hacking. Inwardly, he is depressed and serious and thinks nothing good will happen to him. Afraid to endanger people due to his job and past. Will express affection to MC when convinced that she accepts him for who he is. At the end of the route, he returns to who he is but toned down. Like a mix of both. Catholic. Is a genius hacker, and can be very logical at times. Likes to crossdress and is canonically attracted to both men and women! Loves space, constantly talking about going to the moon during Christmas DLC.

Seven wanted to change his future. When he and his twin were hidden from the world due to his Prime Minister father, he took it upon himself to learn hacking from a book, and promised Saeran they would run away together. Took on a new name when he started working as a hacker. Was not allowed to take Saeran. He refused at first, but after a lot of convincing from V, left Saeran with them.

LOVES Saeran. So much. In the SEs, he still takes care of him even when he tries to kill him. Wants to protect everyone in the RFA which is why he doesn’t let them get too close to him beyond the happy-go-lucky surface. Made a twitter bot to post Zen’s selfies. He wants to help Zen’s career. Good friends with Yoosung, playing pranks on him all the time. Jaehee is exasperated with him, but she acknowledges that he is a genius and does care about him. Jumin is displeased by the way he treats Elly, but still cares about his well being.

He constantly tries to protect others. His twin Saeran from his mother. MC from the hacker threat. Tries to protect the whole RFA by not divulging his identity. Seven used to be a serious workaholic with a robotic personality who studied during the day, worked at night, and barely slept. This all changed when Seven received a floppy disk with Saeran's smiling photographs on his 20th Birthday from Rika, showing how happy Saeran was after Seven left.

Role in Narrative: He is always the one fending off the hacker trying to get into the RFA app. Is connected to V and Rika. His role is huge in the main story, the SEs being largely about the twins as well as V/Rika.

Active or Passive: In his route he actively goes to the apartment and confronts Unknown. His character conflict is balancing between protecting people and keeping them at a distance. This makes him severely depressed and lonely. He deprives himself from the things he wants, doing things to benefit others and push them away if that protects them. He is passive because everything he does is for others.

For Saeyoung I will present the Class, then the Aspect, then I will explain how it all applies to him.

Classpect - Knight of Space: One who serves Space, or serves through Space for others.

This is what the Hiveswap Extended Zodiac has to say about the Space Aspect:

"Those bound to the aspect of Space are, as the name suggests, concerned with the big picture. They are patient, masters of the art of 'wait-and-see', and are inclined to take things as they come. That isn't to say that they're pushovers or willing to let injustice lie-they just choose their battles wisely, understanding that sometimes you have to let something burn to the ground in order to build it back better and stronger than before. To this effect, they tend to be innovators, concerned with creation and redemption. Catch them recycling the old to make the new, the fresh, and the beautiful. For the Space-bound, the journey is as, if not more, important than the destination; how they do something is as important as what they do. At their best, they are steady, impartial, and creative. At their worst, they can be detached, apathetic, and vague."

I personally think Space symbolizes distance, isolation, size, shape, creation and growth.

How this all applies to Saeyoung: HE’S A KNIGHT OF SPACE AHHHHHH As a Knight, Saeyoung would be lacking Space in his story. When he was a child, he lived in a cramped house with his twin and mother. If you consider the beginning of his story to be when he’s in his 20s, his bunker is messy, space taken up by junk. He is the most isolated RFA member physically and emotionally distant (we aren’t counting V). He puts up a front as a jokester, which isn’t a complete lie, but he is hiding his true self. He’s a secret agent with a dangerous job, with a twin brother out there that he needs to protect and is hiding from his father who wants to kill him. Of course, he is going to keep a deliberate distance. Before MC joins the RFA we don’t see Saeyoung in many pictures with the RFA, an example being during Yoosung’s graduation where he couldn’t attend due to being abroad. He is vague and mysterious.

Also Saeyoung’s outfits. I argue he’s the member we see with the most outfit variation. We could word this in another way: he changes his physical form/way he looks constantly. The outfits he wears are sometimes even bizarre. We find out he has to crossdress for his job as a secret agent, and often as a woman due to his small stature. A tendency to be found within Space Players is changing their physical form/look to reach their ideal selves. This is sort of reflected at the end of 707’s route, with him discarding his hoodie and going for white and black shirts, symbolizing his shift in personality (from 707/Luciel to just Saeyoung). Basically, he reaches his ideal form/self by the end of everything in the SEs. This is permanently reflected in his being referred to as Saeyoung Choi from now on.

Another connection he has to space is his love for cats. He loves Elizabeth the 3rd and wants to foster life, a recurring theme with Space players. They are in charge of creating the Genesis Frog, after all. But he’s bad at it, only hurting Elly whenever he’s near her. He builds robot cats and dogs instead, an artificial form of life. When it comes to the dog robot, I believe he builds things when he’s stressed out. He builds the cat for MC and it detects when someone is stressed and goes to comfort them. Again, Saeyoung made something to benefit someone else, and it is an artificial form of life. Perhaps a part of him creates these toys out of loneliness, due to how many years he spent separated from Saeran. This is a constant theme for Space, to be distanced from the people they love either willingly or by fate.

He experiences true and utter loneliness for a period of time. We hear about this from Vanderwood, and how before he received that floppy disk from Rika with the pictures of Saeran, he used to be a robot working day and night. No emotions. Usually, for Space players, this isolation needs to happen so that they gain a deeper understanding of Space. This understanding would help them work toward reaching their ideal selves.

Another way Saeyoung is distanced from everyone is his genius status as a hacker, mechanic, and his interests. Jaehee and Zen are mostly confused by his jokes and antics. Jumin and Saeyoung share their love for cats, but Saeyoung’s treatment of Elly puts a wedge between them. Yoosung and Saeyoung both like LOLOLOL but Saeyoung is a better player, and has a lot going for him outside of it. He is an eccentric person with abilities and interests that can seem unusual (cross-dressing and being a genius programmer). This isolates him from normal people.

The Space imagery going on with him, too, adds to this. He is surrounded by this Aspect constantly. His character arc in the end is beating this loneliness and isolation by reaching out to MC. This then further breaks his isolation by closing the distance between himself and everyone he loves (RFA and Saeran). He acts as a Knight of Space by Serving Space to others. Namely, giving Space between himself and others for their safety.

I think that this is a struggle for the Space bond, they are adept with things within their reach, taking direct and physical action. If it's out of their reach, it is near impossible for them to do anything. He has limited reach over things that are not his domain due to his father hunting him, causing him to become isolated. The things within his domain (programming, building robots, secret agent stuff) he takes direct and physical action. Stuff other than that, it's basically impossible for him to have.

Knights utilize their Aspect earlier compared to other classes, just like how Saeyoung was able to pick up programming rather quickly. He uses his programming to serve the RFA. He works for the agency for Saeran’s sake, and you could argue that programming requires some level of creativity, where you have to adapt with your coding. Space is about growth and creation, taking something that is already there and making it into something new. You could argue the process of working with code as a programmer requires Saeyoung to do just that. He also does this with the dog robot/toys. Growth for Space includes physical and emotional, and we see this in his route. Saeyoung grows to realize that distancing himself from MC Isn’t the way to protect her, and is just hurting her more. Finding out V lied to him, Saeyoung comes to realize what is truly important to him. He repairs the cat robot he made for MC (Space, Space, Space) and they vow to go off to save Saeran. He adopts his real name by that point, symbolizing his growth. He now wants to save and protect the RFA, MC, and Saeran (Knight, Knight, Knight).

EDIT: Also as a Knight of Space, even the career that Saeyoung wants is connected to his role. He tells MC in his route that he wants to become a toy maker. Creation is one of the facets of Space, and making toys and selling them is basically him Serving Space.

He completes his journey as the Knight of Space in the SEs, ultimately getting a happy ending. He triumphed over the antagonistic forces within the narrative and broke away from the isolation plaguing the Space bond. He reaches his ideal self and changes his name to Saeyoung Choi.

Now that we did the 5 main routes, the next posts will get into the antagonists of MM! Saeran was... very difficult to classpect to say the least.

☆ I'm stupid but finally I have proof!!! ☆

orz or not/// urrrkkkk I thought I did, but somehow I can't feel convinced.

I dunno who all remembers my post asking if anyone knew Yoosung's canonical height in the Valentine's after story and that I'd found a couple images circulating the internet stating that he had grown to 5'11'' or something, which I've still never seen proven.

See, I've come back to this tangent because my loser meticulous ass decided to start making a character style sheet of him for essentially no real reason only excused by "research" for my art, when I already know my mind just sometimes demands to study data points and overanalyze everything.

Anyway, originally my brain clicked and I realized Yoosung's arms are present in both his sprite images. I measured his wingspan because I remembered wingspan roughly equates to the height of that same person, and the arm lengths were the same.

Of course the thought that they just.. used Yoosung's old sprite when they made his older version sprite.. Made me want to keep looking. I thought to myself, man I need to find a point of reference. Is everyone's skulls roughly the same height? No, right? The 7 1/2 to 8 heads rule... did not work for Zen's full body reference... orz He ended up being like... 9 1/2 of his own heads. Then I thought, "What age does one's skull stop growing in height size?" Google didn't have much for satisfactory answers, merely alluding to the idea that the skull stops growing to it's full size capacity at around 16-18, but will keep changing otherwise throughout life. But that 16-18 just kinda sounds like it grows in proportion to the rest of you, full body height included. Then, I thoght "Eye balls?? Don't they pretty much stay the same size all your life?" I think this would be the closest indicator if he grew, and they do match up one to one when sized up.

Somehow, still didn't feel secure in my findings. I had another click moment while google searching Mystic Messenger heights images. I remembered the visual novel mode has the heights comparable to the other characters. Then I giggled jovially as I set up the visual novel reference of Yoosung standing next to Seven, then him in the Valentine's After Story. ohohohoho I got it this time, I thought to myself.

I'd also say this is some pretty solid proof that he didn't grow any taller, but I still had to keep in mind that they very obviously used the same base. I thought about how his face seemed narrower, but then I realized they copied and flipped the side of his face that showed his ear to accommodate his hair change, though.. the neck from the other side was copied and flipped too actually...

On that thought, I became somehow curious about his dimensions again, "for research", trying to find his waist line under all the baggy clothing he tends to wear. I think back to how he said he used to be fat, and considering... For one, he weighs almost 20 lbs more than Saeran (Y 149 -> S 130) who is actually an inch taller than him (Y 5'7''-> S 5'8'', an inch shorter than his own twin.), but also Saeran is pretty frail. Saeyoung is 2 inches taller than Yoosung, but only a kg heavier, which is potentially muscle (Potentially *le shrug*). To my knowledge Yoosung doesn't do much for exercise or weight training, if not a sufficient amount at all. Of course we all carry our weight differently, so that's absolutely a thing.

If you take BMI into account, which is a bit more accurate if you don't do weight training, honestly, I'm not entirely sure where he is carrying the weight. lol

I did actually look into examples of real people with the same sizes as Yoosung, and yeah, not a single one of them was without some softness, especially around the mid section, which could explain the baggy clothes... Yoosung's calculated BMI was 23.2, which according to asian BMI charts is pretty much at the cusp of normal and overweight (It does matter, supposedly Asians carry weight differently than western ethnicities and are susceptible to weight related illness at lesser weight/ body fat indexes than western people as well. Says medicine. On average. Apparently their bone mass tends to be less dense as well.) Of course, based on this data, I'd say Yoosung is pretty safe, but of course the sedentary lifestyle and consumption of not so healthy foods could be a cause for concern. I kind of came to a soft conclusion that Yoosung did used to be in what would be considered "over weight" territory before, but considering how beauty standards can be over there, I venture to wonder if it was like... 10 to 20 lbs heavier. If I were to guess, the weight pretty evenly distributed throughout his body, probably mostly in the mid section, as it tends to more so in men, then a bit more in the thighs, and a bit more in the upper arms. Of course to the pinchable cheeks. :9 I dunno man, his full body sprite looks so skinny to me lol.

If I were to consider the waistline I originally came up with, which was mainly based on his Valentine's after story, it does seem like he potentially lost more weight since getting into a relationship. That makes sense to me, as it was insinuated that together with his partner, he became more active and most probably ate more healthy foods. (I cry, it seemed like he doesn't really play games anymore by the Valentines after ending. T__T I'll just choose to believe he'll still game from time to time if his partner is also a gamer.) Come to think of it, looking at that gif comparing his VN sprites, his face really is narrower...

Personally, I embrace soft Yoosung. I'd bet he'd still be just as cute as he always is, and squish♥. :"3 But mostly of all, I'd want him to be as healthy as he can be and happy for a very long time (forever!) ♥

I played V's After Ending again... Don't know how many times I've come back to Mystic Messenger just for more suffering. I can never escape from this angst hell, sigh. OTL

People weren't kidding when they said the Forgive End is really easy to get. 3 years ago I got it without relying on guide, 3 years later I still get stuck in it... Gosh I tried to be hostile to Rika as much as possible but I messed up JUST because I chose the choices that express concern for the Choi twins. I hate that in order to get the Judge End, you'll need to be a bitch with V (burn his letters, suspect V of rescuing Rika, talk about burning his possessions one by one if he doesn't come back in a year...), ignore the members' mental health, i.e. don't ask about Saeran, don't worry for Saeyoung, don't comfort Yoosung... In other words, don't be a freaking normal human being and just seething with anger. This is no difference from Rika, and that's not what I wanted. Why is it so hard to throw her to jail?

What funny is that I remembered choosing a lot of "harsh" options about Rika in my first playthrough, such as: interrupting her self-pity party, expressing the desire to bring her to court, i.e. refusing to be guilt tripped, which should lead to Jugde End, but the game still decided I would forgive her...? Wth I never knew I was such an angel to Rika? :) And this time in the first episode, I only got 6 or 7 choices 'wrong'. Why am I still end up forgiving her? OTL I know that each episode is short, it's not a whole day so every choice counts, but isn't this proves how much Cheritz wants us to forgive Rika? Some of the choices that lead to Judge End - which is treated as bad end - was like: 'She’s not wandering about our sight to make us feel sorry for her and forgive her, is she? '; 'That’s right. Some people need stop doing wrong things unless they’re properly judged.'; 'That’s nothing compared to what she’s done.'; 'All of those bad things happened because of Rika.'; 'I wish we could get rid of her quickly and return to our happy lives.'; 'Couldn’t you tell us sooner? ' (About Saeran might be alive); 'Don’t stand there crying. This is all because of you.'; 'You’ve already chosen to be a parent. You have no excuse to make up excuses.'; 'Wherever he is, he’ll never get to see you again.' Cheritz please reminds me why are they bad again? =.= These options speak nothing but the truth in my eyes.

And I notice even though sometimes there are more than 2 options, but according to the guide I read, the third option (or even fourth?) is lean towards either judge or forgive (with more than half of it goes to 'forgive'), it's not truly neutral. I would have love a third ending where you get to yell at Rika for being a bitch like she is, then have the option to forgive her and she still gets her redemption arc in jail heh. _(:3」∠)_ Cuz rather than Judge and Forgive, it's more like Cheritz wants to slap us with the label "Blame or Forget". =.=

Anyway, I think I gotta farm some HGs and reset this After Ending, cause I'm starting to like the Judge End more and can't stand having this Episode 1 remain as 'forgive'. I already gave up the idea of romancing V after his route, only wanted to stay friends with him, so I can't be bothered even if MC and V don't get married in Judge End. Not to mention the child that came out of nowhere, I didn't even turn 20 when his AE came out, for crying out loud! Even if there's a 5 years time skip, MC having a child is still a bit too much for me.

Kait, do you think GE Saeran would have to deal with drug withdrawal effect during the period between his Good Ending and After Ending? It's highly likely, right? I want nothing more than to be by his side and comfort him during those times :(

Unfortunately, yes.

It's not sunshine and roses when it comes to somebody weaning themself off of the kind of drug he was taking. It was a combination cocktail of all sorts of drugs. The solution that makes up the Elixir is never quite the same each time, and the concentrations can be very different.

As far as I know, everything that's in there is bad for you. The Secret Ending tells us a few of the known ingredients but even the doctors are stumped on EVERYTHING that's in it. I've talked about about how he has to be going through a lot of painful symptoms but the game glosses over it because nobody really likes to talk about that kind of stuff. It's not pretty.

Not only that, but it's hard for people to open up about these particular issues since this is stigmatized no matter if somebody is in recovery or not. A good chunk of his time in the hospital has more to do with his physical symptoms than anything else. That is the case for many victims of Mint Eye. The mental duress and exhaustion are going to take a long time to heal, but as for the physical symptoms, some of those issues can be remedied in the meantime.

It's a mess of migraines, exhaustion, irritability, dehydration, and many other physical and mental symptoms that can differ person to person and substance to substance.

Saeran is going to be dealing with this for a while. Even after he's out of the hospital, I can't see him being comfortable taking any kind of medication outside of something for his migraines. Why in the world would he ever be trustful of medication ever again after he spent so much of his life being forced to take the elixir? Ray called it medicine at one point, you know?

He may not have been taking it for as long as SE Saeran did, but it doesn’t change the fact that he was suffering with the elixir for nearly an entire year.

He mentions once in the after-ending that he has medication he needs to take, and I imagine that offhand comment has a little bit to do with his recovery process. He takes medicine for migraines, that we know, but given that it’s been nearly a month and some change since we escaped Mint Eye, he’s had time to go to a doctor. Hell, I’m certain Jumin had not only helped him get a doctor, but get his proper government documentation as well.

So, he is getting the help he needs for his health, but there's only so much they can do for his sake. They can make sure he has the medication he needs to lessen the severity of what he's going through, but it's not going to stop it 100%. He's going to have good days and bad days going forward, and sometimes there will be an itch he just can't scratch.

If you can do anything for him, you should make sure you have your hand ready for him to hold whatever he feels that ungodly feeling that tells him he needs some kind of elixir to make the pain go away. Even though he said he knew he didn't need to take it anymore, it doesn't change his body's response to no longer taking it. He went off of it cold turkey, and I can't imagine it made him feel good in the days following the aftermath.

Worst case scenario, he keeps up a brave face in front of everybody as you all work together to find his brother, but the minute the two of you are alone, that's when he breaks down and shows you just how bad he feels. It might take a few days for the pain to kick in, but it'll get there, and you'll have to help him talk about… the elixir and what Mint Eye did to him. He may not talk about Rika or V, but he’ll have to tell them why he physically can’t work.

I have absolutely no idea where I'm going with this fanfic if I'm being honest. I was gonna end it after part 3 but it felt incomplete. I added the reader telling Saeyoung that she couldn't be with him after I decided it should keep going.

Like it felt like I needed type up the loose ends with the reader and Saeran before Saeyoung can actually be happy with the reader. In my mind Saeyoung cares so deeply about his brother that he would want him to be happy even if that means sacrificing his own happiness. So yeah, I'm gonna figure out where it should go from here. I don't like adding in characters that aren't from whatever media I'm writing from, so when I do they're probably going to be barely in it and just a random name I found online. Like the name Minji was just one I found by googling Korean girl names and I was like "Sure. That can be her name, she's only going to be vaguely mentioned." If I write for any of the other fandoms I'm in, then I'll probably just use characters from within, but in this case there weren't really any that fit the role.

Okay thats enough of me rambling; basically I'm gonna figure out how the plot should progress before I continue writing. I've been writing one/two chapters every day and then editing them down and swaping stuff around. Sometimes I go back to old ones and edit them if I realize I made a punctual error or what not. I don't like reading fanfics that aren't grammatically correct and are hard to read because of that so I try to make mine easier in that sense. I might not post a chapter for the next day or so. But that's all depending on whether or not I figure out how I want it to progress and how to smoothly transition the relationship between the reader and Saeran from romantic to platonic.

At the end of the day, I'm still a baby when it comes to posting my writing. I've never really had the confidence to do so before but it's kinda fun. So even though only a few people have read it so far I hope you've enjoyed it.

General 2 — Did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like?

General 2:

Definitely. Saeran made it happen — he really wanted it (for the experience, for fun, as a marker that the hardships of the AE were over and that everyone could truly begin to heal). Squirrel was indifferent, didn't even think about it until he said something, but she gladly agreed to it. It would make Saeran happy, after all!

I think Saeran would've previously debated with himself over what type of date he should suggest — whether it should be a taste of normalcy for him (and a return to it for her) or something more tailored and unique. He would eventually settle on the latter.

An afternoon garden walk. When the cold, late-fall day is at its warmest, and the sunlight turns golden by the end of the date, illuminating the warm colours of autumn. She gawks at their surroundings here and there; they point out fascinating things to each other. They come across some curious flowers, and he tells her all about them. They talk about this and that, anything that comes to mind. She complains a little about the bugs occasionally flying into her face, and he can't help but chuckle at her humorously (purposefully) exaggerated reactions.

They reach a resting point — a vista with an old sturdy bench. They sit down. The bench is cold and a bit damp; Squirrel makes a joking remark about it, and Saeran scoots closer to share his warmth. But it's more of a kind gesture, and they both know it; Squirrel is the walking heater of their relationship. She brings it up later, teases him for "being sneaky."

"You just want my warmth, don't ya? I see right through you~."

"Of course, my love." Like it was obvious; a soft, teasing smile. "I don't even need the sun when I'm with you."

Later, he opens his bag, revealing the food he brought. They have a light, early dinner, and spend most of it in blissful quiet. But soon, the sun dips lower, the air grows colder. It'll take a while to continue down the path and reach the bottom again, so Saeran suggests they leave now.

Just like on the way up, they hold gloved hands on their way down. Squirrel's fighting back a grin as she thinks back on the day. The date. How amazing Saeran is. She squeezes his hand; he tugs her closer. She promises herself that next time, she'll make him feel just as spoiled as she does.

Love 12:

Oh, all sorts of things, especially from Saeran. Y'all know the classics: my love, my angel, my sweet. A lot of highly affectionate, almost reverent terms. My goddess, sometimes, especially because it really flusters her (side note: he calls MC this once in his AE). Sweet things, things that show his admiration and adoration for her. Beloved, darling, sunshine, cutie, flower. He has two whole languages of words available to him; he uses whatever he can. He loves seeing her different reactions to each one.

Squirrel doesn't use them very often. She's just not used to it; beyond her cats, she's never been one for pet names (I did NOT intend that to be a pun lmao 💀). But she does have a few she likes to use with him: duckie becomes her go-to. Her friends and some of the RFA tease them a little for it, but after a while, she stopped caring about that and it started becoming more natural to use and to hear.

She also uses some of your more typical ones. The occasional darling or sweetheart. She uses sunshine on him, too. Has found herself calling him babe ironically. And she's started throwing out whatever pet name she can think of, even the most ridiculous ones, just to see how he'll respond. He always responds — either without batting an eye, or with an amused giggle or smile.

Pilot, well... She'll call him "your nice boy" to Squirrel, but that's about it.
